0:25
Speaker 1: my man, Rashan McDonald money Making Conversations. Here we come.
0:30
Speaker 1: Welcome to Money Making Conversation. I am your host with
0:32
Speaker 1: Sean McDonald's. I just wanna let you know a couple
0:34
Speaker 1: of things. Ladies in journals, It's important to understand that
0:36
Speaker 1: everybody travels a different path to success. That's because your
0:40
Speaker 1: brand is different, the challenges your face in life is different.
0:43
Speaker 1: So I bring people on the show to talk about
0:44
Speaker 1: their journeys. There there are missteps their success stories, because
0:48
Speaker 1: in the process of creating success stories, there are missteps,
0:51
Speaker 1: and you need to understand that there are some valleys
0:53
Speaker 1: as well as there's some peaks and your journeys to success.
0:56
Speaker 1: My next guest as a Eustonian. I'm from Houston, so
0:59
Speaker 1: I'm always happened to bring on the fellow us tonight
1:02
Speaker 1: onto the show. It's Chris Gaston. Chris Gaston fold founded
1:06
Speaker 1: Family First Sports Firm with his wife in twenty and eighteen.
1:09
Speaker 1: The agency Family First focused on empowerment, economic growth, and
1:13
Speaker 1: black excellence. The agency represents DeAndre Darren Darren Fox of
1:19
Speaker 1: the That's just correct, I say the right deer in
1:23
Speaker 1: Fox of the Sacramento Kings. Gaston is signed the largest
1:26
Speaker 1: contract in the Sacramento Kings franchise history five years, a
1:29
Speaker 1: hundred and sixty three million, and then secured a four
1:32
Speaker 1: million dollar deal for Damien Dodson, former U of H
1:35
Speaker 1: grad That's why I went to school and the toughest
1:38
Speaker 1: free agent market and in NBA history. He's now with
1:40
Speaker 1: the Cleveland Cavalier Leers. He originally started out the New
1:43
Speaker 1: York Knicks. Gaston made his way in the industry through
1:46
Speaker 1: player development, working with many of the top players in
1:49
Speaker 1: the NBA college in high school. Please welcome to money
1:51
Speaker 1: making conversation A man who understands relationships, Mr Chris Gaston. Yes,
1:57
Speaker 1: sir man man, pleasure to have me man, know you
2:00
Speaker 1: was in Houston native, so I was good talking to
2:02
Speaker 1: a fellow Houston guy. You know, we're very proud. You
2:04
Speaker 1: know we were to that age symbol on our on
2:07
Speaker 1: our hearts and man, wherever we go, well you have
2:09
Speaker 1: to you know, I will also be broadcasting on KTSU,
2:12
Speaker 1: so this show would be area KSU and the Houston
2:14
Speaker 1: market on that every Tuesday from twel to one. So
2:17
Speaker 1: make sure this episode airs in the Houston market. So
2:20
Speaker 1: you know, again you have a brand that you developed.
2:22
Speaker 1: And I started that out by saying relationships because when
2:26
Speaker 1: we talk about working with NBA players or top college
2:29
Speaker 1: players in NBA college in high school, talking about your
2:31
Speaker 1: journey right quick, Chris, because everybody wants to be an agent.
2:34
Speaker 1: But you can be an agent, but if you don't
2:36
Speaker 1: have the relationships, then you don't have talent to sign
2:39
Speaker 1: to these big deals that we just talked about in
2:41
Speaker 1: your opening credits. Man, being an agent is all about relationships, man,
2:47
Speaker 1: and you know these relationships don't happen. It's just like
2:50
Speaker 1: building trusts. You can't build trusts overnight. So these relationships
2:53
Speaker 1: are ten, fifteen, twenty years in the making. You know,
2:57
Speaker 1: I'm not an overnight success. You know I started, Man,
3:00
Speaker 1: I grinded from the bottom. I started working on high
3:03
Speaker 1: school girls. You know that I was blessing up that.
3:06
Speaker 1: You know a guy that I called, you know, like
3:07
Speaker 1: my little brother, a guy by the name of Tommy
3:09
Speaker 1: Mason Griffin and know him since he was in the
3:12
Speaker 1: second and third grade. You know, I started working with
3:14
Speaker 1: him and he turned out to be a McDonald's all American,
3:16
Speaker 1: you know, out of Madison High School, high school I
3:19
Speaker 1: went to. And it kind of snowball from there, man
3:22
Speaker 1: to just working guys out. UM started an AU program.
3:28
Speaker 1: Thought I wanted to be a college coach. That didn't
3:30
Speaker 1: work out, and it just kept growing and growing. I
3:33
Speaker 1: just kept grinding and grinding. This is you know, this
3:36
Speaker 1: is years and years of relationship to get to this point.
3:39
Speaker 1: So you know, everybody wants to be a Rich Paul
3:41
Speaker 1: or Jeremy Grin and they could just wake up over
3:43
Speaker 1: and I even take a test become an agent. It's
3:46
Speaker 1: not that simple. Man, Well, he had the ultimate relationship.
3:51
Speaker 1: That's uh called Lebron James and that's him Maverick and
3:55
Speaker 1: uhre's a great story about black men who started out
3:59
Speaker 1: in high school who built a sports empire, a media empire,
4:04
Speaker 1: and a philanthropic UH empire. As we all know, Labron
4:08
Speaker 1: is very influential. And the h A movement and civil
4:12
Speaker 1: rights arrested, UH siver arrested happened this summer as well
4:15
Speaker 1: as the getting not to vote. And so how does
4:18
Speaker 1: that play to your agency? Because we talk about your
4:20
Speaker 1: agency and focuses on empowerment, economic growth and black excellent,
4:23
Speaker 1: Let's start with the empowerment part. What empowerment is first,
4:28
Speaker 1: I have to empower myself, Yes, because people that look
4:31
Speaker 1: like me, that walk and talk like me, that where
4:33
Speaker 1: they're haired, and you know, any type of style they want,
4:36
Speaker 1: they don't get opportunities in this business. Their stereotype, their judge.
4:40
Speaker 1: It's just hard. Like you know, majority of the men
4:42
Speaker 1: own the court, players on the court, or African American
4:45
Speaker 1: or minorities, but the majority of the business that happens
4:48
Speaker 1: off the court. People hearing these guys careers are whitening
4:51
Speaker 1: and it's just lopside. And you know, I've been here
4:54
Speaker 1: being through changing that and given you know, all minorities
4:57
Speaker 1: and women a chance and empowerment this business. So um,
5:01
Speaker 1: I'm not slaying to hiring one person or another but
5:04
Speaker 1: I but I knew I'm big on hiring minorities and
5:07
Speaker 1: people who normally wouldn't get a chance to work in
5:09
Speaker 1: this industry. That's very important thing I can I can
5:11
Speaker 1: relate to you. You know, I managed Steve hard in
5:13
Speaker 1: my background, Steve Harvey. Talents like Steve Harvey doesn't get
5:16
Speaker 1: associated with talents like me, which can mean that people
5:19
Speaker 1: of color. I currently managed Steven A. Smith, a high
5:22
Speaker 1: profile person in the media, especially on the NBA side
5:26
Speaker 1: with ESPN and negotiating contracts. So it's all that part
5:29
Speaker 1: about negotiating, being in that doorway, being able to look
5:33
Speaker 1: at individuals that represented by UH majority firms majority first
5:39
Speaker 1: like ci A, H William mars U t A and
5:43
Speaker 1: other other sports agencies that that get out there and
5:46
Speaker 1: get the athlete first and then used to what happens
5:48
Speaker 1: they have the ability to court them longer and especially
5:51
Speaker 1: happens in the football industry, but also in the basketball
5:54
Speaker 1: industry a little bit different because of the fact that
5:57
Speaker 1: that's a nurturing process. A you probably programs or i
6:01
Speaker 1: MG kind of setting it up where they got people,
6:04
Speaker 1: they got you go down there and participate in their camps.
6:07
Speaker 1: So but you got in with Mr Fox who's out
6:10
Speaker 1: of Houston, and Damien Dodson, who went to University Houston.
6:14
Speaker 1: So these are two people in Houston based. Talk about
6:17
Speaker 1: how you established your relationship with Fox, because they also
6:20
Speaker 1: were two talented twins out of the Houston market that
6:24
Speaker 1: also wins. They went to Kentucky and uh and a
6:27
Speaker 1: lot was expected of those two young men, you know,
6:30
Speaker 1: because they were they were much of ballyhoo in fact
6:33
Speaker 1: that they were even more balued than their Darren was
6:37
Speaker 1: when he came out of the AD. When they these guys,
6:39
Speaker 1: they had all the hype around him. But I can't speak.
6:42
Speaker 1: I don't know specifically what happened with those guys. I mean,
6:44
Speaker 1: they were great players and just I mean the NBA
6:47
Speaker 1: is hard. Just didn't paying out for those guys. But
6:49
Speaker 1: as far as my relationship with with Damien Dodson, he's
6:52
Speaker 1: actually a family Um. He's my wife's cousin, so i'm him.
6:56
Speaker 1: When I first started day with my wife and Daniel
6:58
Speaker 1: was back in six six or seventh grade, he was Yeah,
7:02
Speaker 1: he was just with me everywhere. He wasn't a big
7:04
Speaker 1: time prospect or, like you said, a badly hoover fruit.
7:07
Speaker 1: He was a guy. We just put our head down
7:09
Speaker 1: and went to work every day. We grinded. I mean
7:11
Speaker 1: when he went to some trials and tribulations at Oregon
7:14
Speaker 1: get the Transport University of Right and then you know,
7:17
Speaker 1: my relationship with darn Fox start when he was in
7:19
Speaker 1: the fighth grade. I had my own youth program and
7:22
Speaker 1: one of my friends that was going to be his
7:24
Speaker 1: coach at the high school said, uh, you should have
7:27
Speaker 1: come let this kid and play for a tournament on
7:30
Speaker 1: your seven team and the under program. I'm like, I'm
7:33
Speaker 1: not letting a fight grade kid come playing up with
7:35
Speaker 1: these juniors and seniors. They're like, now, you should let
7:37
Speaker 1: him co play. He's gonna be pretty good. So I
7:39
Speaker 1: let him come play one tournament, and that was all
7:42
Speaker 1: she wrote. You know, we've been attacked attached at the
7:45
Speaker 1: hip ever since. And I'll say that's the difference between
7:50
Speaker 1: me and Rich Paul. A lot of people try to
7:51
Speaker 1: compare Rich Paul. Per Se was these guys peers and
7:54
Speaker 1: kind of grew up with them and hung out with
7:56
Speaker 1: those guys. You know, me and Darren we want peers.
7:59
Speaker 1: I was I was a man, he was a child.
8:01
Speaker 1: You know. I was more of a mentor, a big brother.
8:04
Speaker 1: And now actually that he's older, we grew into a
8:06
Speaker 1: different type of relationship. But I wasn't some guy hanging
8:10
Speaker 1: out at the club with him and calling and texting
8:12
Speaker 1: him like. No, I was a professional businessman like this
8:15
Speaker 1: wasn't like you know, some homeboy hookup type stuff like.
8:18
Speaker 1: But it's all about trust. It's all about trust because
8:21
Speaker 1: you started earlier, you know, when I when I started
8:23
Speaker 1: reason to resumeate Chris, you know, because you know, coaching
8:27
Speaker 1: a lot of discipline in your life, a lot of development,
8:29
Speaker 1: a lot of motivation comes out your resume, you know
8:32
Speaker 1: when I look at it, and let's talk about us
8:34
Speaker 1: walk through these steps. Because I'm not trying to bash
8:38
Speaker 1: anybody on this show. When I talked about the Harrison Twins,
8:40
Speaker 1: because but that's how this business is. You can come
8:44
Speaker 1: out much Bally who they went to Kentucky, had an
8:47
Speaker 1: incredible career, but then flaws in their game started to
8:51
Speaker 1: pop up. You know, could have could have handled Rock.
8:54
Speaker 1: Who's what position is it gonna play? Does he play good? D?
8:58
Speaker 1: But when I looked at Foxes game, I remember when
9:00
Speaker 1: he played against Ball, who was much barely hood. How
9:04
Speaker 1: do you c l a, and there was much talk
9:06
Speaker 1: after he clowned him. I mean he claimed ball, you know,
9:09
Speaker 1: in the in the tournament that okay, it's ball A.
9:13
Speaker 1: Fox should go as we see now, Fox should have
9:17
Speaker 1: went number two and not Ball, who's been a very
9:21
Speaker 1: competent player. But again, hype, Ken, how do you slice
9:25
Speaker 1: through the hype because I remember emotionally, I was really
9:28
Speaker 1: charmed by by Daren when he was crying on TV
9:32
Speaker 1: after that loss. I was really man with hype. We
9:36
Speaker 1: try to block out the noise, man, because there's gonna
9:38
Speaker 1: be so many people in your ears, so many people
9:40
Speaker 1: telling you how good you are, like we always want more. Man.
9:43
Speaker 1: Darren's dad and his mom, they did a great job
9:46
Speaker 1: of keeping him absolutely. Remember after his preshoneer in high school,
9:50
Speaker 1: Darren had a fifty two point game, two points, and
9:53
Speaker 1: all his dad was fussing about after the game, you
9:56
Speaker 1: missed these rebounds, you missed these balls, you missed these
9:59
Speaker 1: three throws. Let's go to the gym, the ninety two
10:01
Speaker 1: pre throws. So it's about keeping keeping, you know, And
10:04
Speaker 1: it's hard to stay humber when you're getting all these
10:06
Speaker 1: press Philippians, all these rankings and stuff. So that's why
10:09
Speaker 1: you're you're supporting circle, your people around your family. They
10:12
Speaker 1: are very crucial to the player of development. You gotta
10:15
Speaker 1: keep these guys humble. You know, to your point that
10:17
Speaker 1: Hash and Twins had a lot of hype, and um,
10:20
Speaker 1: I mean it just didn't work out. I mean the
10:22
Speaker 1: NBA is hard business. Like you said, they got Nippick
10:24
Speaker 1: when they got to Kentucky. They had a lot of
10:26
Speaker 1: question marks about the game and it just didn't work out.
10:29
Speaker 1: But you know, you have to stay humble. You have
10:32
Speaker 1: to block out the noise. You cannot get caught up
10:34
Speaker 1: in the hype. I've seen the number one pick Anthony
10:37
Speaker 1: Bennett of the NBA. Now, so I tell people, don't
10:42
Speaker 1: get caught up in the rankings or pick. You go
10:44
Speaker 1: the jobs to get in the league and stay in
10:46
Speaker 1: the league. You know well that some people that get
10:49
Speaker 1: too caught up in the rankings and who's what. But
10:51
Speaker 1: we don't get caught up in that. We don't what
10:54
Speaker 1: the thing about it. So so with that being said,
10:56
Speaker 1: because that's that's that's daring. Okay, here's it got buch
11:00
Speaker 1: belly who And then you go to Damien Dodson. You
11:03
Speaker 1: know when he left your h you know, uh. And
11:05
Speaker 1: he made the New York Niche team after the tough
11:08
Speaker 1: defense and he has a good outside shop, good three points.
11:12
Speaker 1: So he had talked about that process because I was
11:15
Speaker 1: a different motivation process because the Fox was a lot
11:18
Speaker 1: of repick, a certain amount of guarantees. You know, he
11:21
Speaker 1: wasn't gonna get cut his first year. We knew that.
11:24
Speaker 1: But Damien went in talking about that process and getting
11:27
Speaker 1: them on the New York Knicks and now he's over
11:28
Speaker 1: Cleveland now. But I was so proud because he was
11:32
Speaker 1: He's a really talented NBA player right Well with Damien,
11:37
Speaker 1: you know, we have a monel man. I always know
11:39
Speaker 1: his work, you know, dream big, working hard, let God
11:41
Speaker 1: do the rest. And so that was kind of about model.
11:44
Speaker 1: You know, we're gonna put We're gonna work as hard
11:46
Speaker 1: as we can, and wherever the chips may fall, we're
11:48
Speaker 1: gonna We're gonna be happy with that. So his process
11:50
Speaker 1: was very different coming out of the University of Houston
11:52
Speaker 1: there with no guarantees. We packed our badge and went
11:55
Speaker 1: to l A. We started training. He had to go
11:58
Speaker 1: to the camp called the COURSEM Invitational the p I T,
12:01
Speaker 1: which is for the top seniors in the country. Absolutely,
12:04
Speaker 1: and he went there, he bawled out, he won m
12:07
Speaker 1: VP of the tournament. And from there he got invited
12:09
Speaker 1: to the Chicago Combine, which is for the top sixty
12:13
Speaker 1: prospects in the NBA Draft. He played well there, um
12:16
Speaker 1: and he we had several NBA workouts, not no for him.
12:19
Speaker 1: He played what he did with I mean he stepped,
12:22
Speaker 1: he knocked it out the park, and I mean it
12:24
Speaker 1: was a ground. He's grueling, is mentally taxing, but he's
12:27
Speaker 1: built for this man. And you know that's the reason
12:29
Speaker 1: why he's sticking in the NBA to day, because he
12:31
Speaker 1: just has that for the two to to fight through adversity.
12:35
Speaker 1: Let's let's talk about that there. Sticking in the NBA.
12:38
Speaker 1: These guys are given a lot of money to how
12:42
Speaker 1: do you you know, I'm a guy. You know I'm
12:44
Speaker 1: a financier. You know my name, my show, money making conversations.
12:48
Speaker 1: And so I always believe that some of these young
12:51
Speaker 1: men should just be they could be the money they
12:54
Speaker 1: make their first year should be putting the fund where
12:56
Speaker 1: they can just be delivered liver lifestyle of comfort for
13:00
Speaker 1: the rest of the for the rest of their life. Really,
13:02
Speaker 1: it can't be done that way, how do you deal
13:04
Speaker 1: with these situations? From my financial standford, you're the agent. Now,
13:08
Speaker 1: they are different lanes out there. I would just let
13:09
Speaker 1: everybody know and the agent lane, there's a financial lane,
13:12
Speaker 1: as a brandy person, as a talent agent, there's a
13:15
Speaker 1: lot of different lanes. What all does your firm encompass? Well,
13:20
Speaker 1: my friend, we come we hand. The marketing endorsements arefully
13:23
Speaker 1: contract negotiations. Uh. We do have several different business managers
13:27
Speaker 1: and financial advisers we work with. We don't pick the
13:29
Speaker 1: person for We let those guys interview those guys and
13:32
Speaker 1: pick them. But we do have a few guys that
13:33
Speaker 1: we trust. And you know, those guys are on the budget.
13:37
Speaker 1: And at the end of the day, when people say
13:39
Speaker 1: they point things, you're the reasons why. God. At the
13:41
Speaker 1: end of the day, it's all on the player. You
13:43
Speaker 1: can advise them to do don't do X. The financial
13:46
Speaker 1: visers can tell me this is your budget, but at
13:47
Speaker 1: the end of the day, it's their money and they're
13:49
Speaker 1: gonna do what they want to do with their money.
13:51
Speaker 1: So it's up to inter take their advice from the
13:53
Speaker 1: financial advisor, from the business manager and stay with their
13:57
Speaker 1: their budgets, stay within reason, because it's like, these guys
13:59
Speaker 1: are make a lot of money. They can live a
14:01
Speaker 1: comfortable lifestyle and not go crazy. A lot of guys
14:05
Speaker 1: go broke, honestly. It's not about buying. You really can't.
14:08
Speaker 1: If you're making thirty million dollars a year, you're not
14:10
Speaker 1: gonna go broke down a couple of bill leaves and ferrars.
14:12
Speaker 1: The way people go broke, honestly is loaning our money
14:16
Speaker 1: that ads up going to the club in investments. You know,
14:20
Speaker 1: everybody's coming to with these million dollar ideas and it
14:23
Speaker 1: sounds good, but that's the way a lot of players
14:26
Speaker 1: that win broke is investing their money in the wrong things. Yeah,
14:29
Speaker 1: investing money, and then car washers invest their money, and
14:32
Speaker 1: nightclubs invest their money and movie ideas. I know that
14:37
Speaker 1: I've been in the business a long time. I've seen
14:39
Speaker 1: this money flow out. Everybody wants to be a rapper,
14:42
Speaker 1: everybody wants a sound studio. Everybody here is that that
14:45
Speaker 1: final product. You know, say, hey man, this person here
14:48
Speaker 1: is gonna be the next, you know, next next. But
14:50
Speaker 1: that does mean that's a reality. And so when I
14:52
Speaker 1: look at talent like yours that you are, that's where
14:55
Speaker 1: the father figure comes in. That's where the maturity comes in.
14:58
Speaker 1: Like you said, you are man and your man who's
15:01
Speaker 1: a who's benefited from watching people make these mistakes and
15:04
Speaker 1: also a player development let's talk to these let's walk
15:07
Speaker 1: through these players development steps that you talk about in
15:10
Speaker 1: these camps you put in place, right. So my bread
15:15
Speaker 1: and butter when I got in the business player development.
15:17
Speaker 1: You know, a k A working guys out training And
15:19
Speaker 1: I never just call it training. I call it player
15:21
Speaker 1: development because we were doing more than just working out.
15:24
Speaker 1: We've been in a relationship, we're talking about life, we're
15:26
Speaker 1: talking about girls, god school. So that's why I say
15:30
Speaker 1: player development instead of training. Training is a word I
15:33
Speaker 1: feel they used to put you in the box where
15:35
Speaker 1: like this is all you can do, right. But player
15:38
Speaker 1: development that was my bread and butter. Man I studied.
15:41
Speaker 1: I learned it from you know, one of my mentors
15:43
Speaker 1: as a guy by name and am sorry Elamin. He's
15:45
Speaker 1: a look not many people know him. He's a he's
15:49
Speaker 1: a head coach at a small n A school in Florida.
15:52
Speaker 1: But he's one of my mentors. He's kind of like
15:54
Speaker 1: a who's whisper. He was kind of a training guru man.
15:57
Speaker 1: I learned a lot from him, and that's where I
16:00
Speaker 1: cut my teeth, ed just on the floor working guys
16:02
Speaker 1: out in. I didn't take them for granted. You know,
16:05
Speaker 1: each player that I had in the gym, whether you're
16:07
Speaker 1: a high school kid or an NBA player. No, I
16:09
Speaker 1: would go home steady a game, watch film and break
16:12
Speaker 1: it up, and I'll be a BA all night and
16:15
Speaker 1: study and trying to see how can I make this player,
16:17
Speaker 1: How can I elevate this game? What can I do?
16:21
Speaker 1: Where I really cut my teeth. I want to talk about.
16:24
Speaker 1: You know, it's finally here, the season of celebration, and

18:20
Speaker 1: T E R. Dot AI's gonna take you creates. I
18:24
Speaker 1: thought I was a hoopster. I thought I had game.
18:26
Speaker 1: You know, I was so arrogant. I didn't. I didn't.
18:29
Speaker 1: I was all park, as they said, because I never
18:30
Speaker 1: played high school ball. But I was all park. You know,
18:32
Speaker 1: funding come on Funday, you know, I go down to
18:36
Speaker 1: McGregor Park. I had all the best black parks back
18:39
Speaker 1: in the day. I was there. I walked on the court,
18:42
Speaker 1: you know, I was first pick, first pick on the sideline. RISHT,
18:44
Speaker 1: come on, I want you. I want you. But then
18:47
Speaker 1: I was stupid too because I didn't understand the fundamentals
18:50
Speaker 1: of the game. I didn't understand that. And that's that's
18:53
Speaker 1: what we're talking about right now, because one thing I've
18:56
Speaker 1: learned when you play street balls, Yes, there were players
18:59
Speaker 1: out think that will probably other than the team ALIA
19:01
Speaker 1: wants their plays out there that I'll jump dominiquhippers. Right,
19:06
Speaker 1: they're probably physically better than Lebron James. You might be
19:11
Speaker 1: going too far with him, man, but I get your
19:12
Speaker 1: point when you say nothing come on that talented guys
19:15
Speaker 1: on the on the on the gonna be come. I'm
19:20
Speaker 1: talking about street ball. I'm talking about that hitting these parks.
19:23
Speaker 1: It's some guys out there, man, they can leap. It's
19:27
Speaker 1: some guys out there can do like like they had
19:30
Speaker 1: that contest there was on T and T all these
19:32
Speaker 1: guys who could dunk. Oh, they can dunk a ball.
19:35
Speaker 1: They can do three sixties, they can flip the ball
19:37
Speaker 1: over the back. But they can't play the game. And
19:40
Speaker 1: that's why I'm getting there with me. I was talented,
19:42
Speaker 1: but I couldn't play the game. I didn't understand that
19:44
Speaker 1: player development part of that. You were talking about working
19:47
Speaker 1: with the team. That's why I say, That's what I'm
19:50
Speaker 1: saying is that you understood it, and that's what you're
19:53
Speaker 1: doing that that, like you said that basketball whisperer, being
19:56
Speaker 1: able to articulate what what the next step for the
20:00
Speaker 1: from players? How do you get in their head and
20:02
Speaker 1: how do we eventually listen to you? They do they
20:05
Speaker 1: learn from the little no ship you give this or
20:08
Speaker 1: that makes sense because that's a whole. That's a huge trust.
20:10
Speaker 1: It's just a little nuances. Man, some some guys. I
20:14
Speaker 1: never raised my voice. I never yell. I rarely curse.
20:18
Speaker 1: You know, some guys like to scream and yell and
20:21
Speaker 1: get over here. You know me, I just talked to him.
20:24
Speaker 1: I literally talked to him and you know, break stuff down. Hey,
20:27
Speaker 1: did you see the way Yannest did a one too
20:29
Speaker 1: into its pull up? We want to do the same thing.
20:31
Speaker 1: You know, he'll where I say a little phrase like
20:33
Speaker 1: you know, he'll toe explode into a jump shot or
20:36
Speaker 1: and you know, elementary things, hand in the cookie jar
20:39
Speaker 1: when you shoot, make sure when you're crossing over, get
20:42
Speaker 1: your shoulders to the defenders. Hills, just a little key
20:45
Speaker 1: points that when they started playing, they can hear that
20:47
Speaker 1: my voice in their head. I'm about to go by
20:49
Speaker 1: this guy and make sure I get low protective ball.
20:52
Speaker 1: It's just a little small nuances. It's nothing crazy and
20:55
Speaker 1: over the top. It's just being a hat. And the
20:58
Speaker 1: main thing for these guys to trust you is you
21:00
Speaker 1: gotta have a relationship with I don't have a relationship
21:02
Speaker 1: with you. They're not gonna trust you with the most
21:04
Speaker 1: precious thing, which is the basketball with their game. Okay, cool,
21:08
Speaker 1: And that's a lot of people miss out on the
21:09
Speaker 1: relationship part. Those are the best coaches that relationship with
21:12
Speaker 1: their players, players that run through a brick wall for them. Right.
21:15
Speaker 1: You know. Now we talked about empowerment. Let's go to
21:18
Speaker 1: economic growth. Let's talk about that from your firm. We're
21:21
Speaker 1: talking about Chris Gaston. He is an amazing company out
21:24
Speaker 1: of Houston, Texas and found in Tween with his wife
21:26
Speaker 1: called Family First Sports Firm. Talk. We talked about empowerment
21:30
Speaker 1: that your firm. Let's talk about the economic growth. Yeah.
21:35
Speaker 1: I didn't hear the last part. You could. I apologize.
21:38
Speaker 1: As we were talking about your firm. You know that
21:39
Speaker 1: you founded in Tween called Family First Sports Firm. We
21:43
Speaker 1: talked about empowerment. Let's talk about the economic growth that
21:47
Speaker 1: you deal with your players. Right. Well, one thing we
21:50
Speaker 1: want to do is we want to put the dollar
21:53
Speaker 1: black back in the black community. You know. Um. We
21:58
Speaker 1: we want to invest in small businesses. We want to
22:00
Speaker 1: support UM young entrepreneurs. We want to get like I said,
22:04
Speaker 1: we want to we were voice for the unheard. We
22:06
Speaker 1: want to speak for the unheard. Man. It's not saying
22:09
Speaker 1: we're not gonna do with big companies and stuff. I mean,
22:11
Speaker 1: we gotta deal with Nike, we gotta we do deals
22:13
Speaker 1: with Red Bulls. So that's not to say we're not done.
22:16
Speaker 1: We're not stupid. When we say economic growth, we want
22:19
Speaker 1: to put the dollar black back in the black community.
22:22
Speaker 1: You know. We want these players to help their family out,
22:24
Speaker 1: but do it in a way that's gonna create growth,
22:27
Speaker 1: not just say, man, mom, here go a hundred thousand
22:29
Speaker 1: dollars like no, mama, we're gonna create a company or
22:34
Speaker 1: escorp or LLC. You're gonna be the you know, create
22:37
Speaker 1: a foundation and grow it, you know, not just here
22:40
Speaker 1: goes some money, like no, you take this money and multiplied,
22:43
Speaker 1: you know, making times ten, you know, teen x and
22:45
Speaker 1: growing in something else. So that's what we mean when
22:47
Speaker 1: we say economic growth. Just teaching these players financial literacy
22:51
Speaker 1: and you know, financial growth, and that's what so many,
22:54
Speaker 1: not just in basketball, but at all sports. The financial
22:58
Speaker 1: literacy part fails so many because they don't have mentors.
23:01
Speaker 1: Because I consider your mentor too to these young men,
23:04
Speaker 1: because as well as an agent representative so black excellence.
23:09
Speaker 1: You know, I hear black excellent throughout your force. I
23:12
Speaker 1: hear the ability to give back to the black community.
23:15
Speaker 1: That's all part of the empowerment. Now, we went through
23:18
Speaker 1: a very amazing season that happened this year because of
23:22
Speaker 1: COVID eighteen and the civil unrest. We saw the actual
23:26
Speaker 1: NBA walk off the court basically based on the incident
23:29
Speaker 1: that happened in Milwaukee. How did your players deal with
23:32
Speaker 1: that and how did you deal with it? Chris Um.
23:37
Speaker 1: It was a very emotional time. As you know, Damien Dodson,
23:40
Speaker 1: he went to Yatees High School which grew up in
23:43
Speaker 1: the same neighborhood, same high school as George Floyd. So
23:45
Speaker 1: they hit close to home. And you know Stephen Jackson,
23:48
Speaker 1: you know, he's a good friend of mine. He's one
23:49
Speaker 1: of the people are starting to business, one of the
23:51
Speaker 1: first NBA players I started working out. Uh, you know
23:54
Speaker 1: that he was very close to George Floyd. I mean
23:56
Speaker 1: they called each other twins, so that I mean they
23:58
Speaker 1: hit home for us. They hit close to and actually
24:01
Speaker 1: one of the players and there I knew from Yates
24:03
Speaker 1: High schools. George Floyd was his cousin, which I didn't know,
24:06
Speaker 1: and so they're close to home. So we participated in
24:08
Speaker 1: the marches in Houston, Um Fox, you know, we went
24:11
Speaker 1: and flew up the Sacramento participated in peaceful protests. And
24:15
Speaker 1: I say peaceful because you know we want the ones
24:17
Speaker 1: riding and looting. But that's a story for another day.
24:20
Speaker 1: But participating in peace for protests and Sacramento, and we
24:26
Speaker 1: just encouraged our players to vote and speak out on
24:28
Speaker 1: any issues. Foxes very vocal on his issues and even
24:33
Speaker 1: even wore entire racists on the back of this jersey
24:35
Speaker 1: in the bubble. You know, so all our players are
24:37
Speaker 1: very outspoken and you know, very vocal about the movement.
24:41
Speaker 1: Um that was that's going on. Now, that's really important
24:44
Speaker 1: because of the fact that you know, if social media
24:48
Speaker 1: plays a role in that, you know, because you have
24:50
Speaker 1: to be conscious of social media can be a double
24:53
Speaker 1: as sword. You know, you could post the wrong thing
24:55
Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden people criticize it. For
24:57
Speaker 1: you post the right thing and then get increased the
24:59
Speaker 1: engage meant that you want what what what? What? What
25:03
Speaker 1: message are you trying to allow your players to put
25:06
Speaker 1: out there? Like say, you talk about community of all,
25:09
Speaker 1: when you talk about black excellent, you talk about economic growth,
25:11
Speaker 1: we talked about empowerment. But what is your company. You know,
25:14
Speaker 1: because you say family first, What does that mean when
25:16
Speaker 1: you say family first? Family first is exactly what it means.
25:21
Speaker 1: Your family is first. And just like a real family,
25:23
Speaker 1: you're not gonna always disagree, I mean not, I mean people,
25:26
Speaker 1: You're not gonna always agree. I always gonna be on
25:28
Speaker 1: the same page. But at the end of the day,
25:29
Speaker 1: you know, it's all of you know, we all lived
25:31
Speaker 1: together for the coming, for the coming goods. So that's
25:34
Speaker 1: exactly what it means. And family first means, you know,
25:38
Speaker 1: empowering your people. It's okay to grow with the people
25:42
Speaker 1: that got you to where you are. You know, and
25:44
Speaker 1: most agencies, most companies, I see, guys make it to
25:46
Speaker 1: a certain status and then the agency takes it from there, like, okay,
25:50
Speaker 1: we got it from here. Now you know, uh, your
25:53
Speaker 1: youth coach, you coach, your mom and your daddy. You know,
25:56
Speaker 1: they helped you get to this point. But now they're done.
25:58
Speaker 1: You know, we got it from here. Obviously, the player
26:01
Speaker 1: is gonna grow and they're not gonna be depended upon
26:04
Speaker 1: their family and things of that nature. But we still
26:07
Speaker 1: try to do things to make sure that the family
26:09
Speaker 1: is important. Like when Darren signed his Max contract. You know,
26:13
Speaker 1: we had a big it's a picture on instated, a
26:15
Speaker 1: big family celebration in Houston, you know, all black gutar.
26:19
Speaker 1: It's probably over thirty people there, you know, so we
26:22
Speaker 1: know we celebrated together as a family, not me and
26:25
Speaker 1: Dearn in a private room by ourself, you know, popping
26:27
Speaker 1: a bottle and all. We celebrated with everybody that was
26:30
Speaker 1: important in his life. You know, we celebrated that together.
26:33
Speaker 1: That was accomplishment for everybody. Because it takes a village.
26:36
Speaker 1: But it takes a village. But they also lives in
26:38
Speaker 1: a different city, Sacramento, and he's born and raised in Houston, Texas.
26:42
Speaker 1: How does that allow him to be the person he
26:44
Speaker 1: wants to be because Sacramento is a much farther the environment,
26:47
Speaker 1: as far as population, it's not as I want to say,
26:51
Speaker 1: African American friendly as the city of Houston is. So
26:55
Speaker 1: how does he deal with that? Mr? Fox Um, he's
26:59
Speaker 1: a very smart dude. He's a very cultural dude. And
27:01
Speaker 1: I said his parents have done a great job of
27:04
Speaker 1: keeping him grounded. His mom has a foundation Foxhole Family
27:07
Speaker 1: Foundation and supports breast counsel wareness because she's a breast
27:10
Speaker 1: counsel sur about that. Yes, and the dad started AU
27:13
Speaker 1: Team Team Fox, you know, for the seven of every graders.
27:17
Speaker 1: So that keeps him connected to the city of Houston.
27:19
Speaker 1: That keeps him ground. He comes back and supports the
27:22
Speaker 1: Air You program, comes back to tournaments, he comes back
27:24
Speaker 1: to events that his mom's doing, so that keeps them
27:27
Speaker 1: very connected and tied to the city of Houston. Now
27:31
Speaker 1: your firm, you have two athletes. We continue to have
27:34
Speaker 1: talked about how do you recruit future athletes? Are I know,
27:37
Speaker 1: first of all, you can't reveal certain things on this show,
27:40
Speaker 1: but how you go about recruiting the next Damien Dots
27:43
Speaker 1: the next deeron Fox? Right? Well, I said, I want
27:48
Speaker 1: to leave mother two guys out as well. I have
27:50
Speaker 1: two guys that are currently in the NBA, Fox and Dotson.
27:52
Speaker 1: I have one former NBA player who spent four years
27:56
Speaker 1: in the NBA, Eric Morland. He actually want to ring
27:58
Speaker 1: with the Toronto Raptors. He's currently playing in China. And
28:02
Speaker 1: then I also represent josh Niebo who's a rookie who
28:05
Speaker 1: he decided not to try to NBA al the G
28:07
Speaker 1: League round. He's playing in Israel right now. So I
28:10
Speaker 1: have two guys playing international and two guys that are
28:12
Speaker 1: currently in the NBA. And how got barb recruiting. It's
28:15
Speaker 1: all about relationships, man. I don't do a lot of
28:17
Speaker 1: time races, and I don't d M random guys like hey, hey,
28:20
Speaker 1: what's what's your name. I have a lot of relationships
28:24
Speaker 1: built all over the country through ANYU coaches and high
28:28
Speaker 1: school coaches, college coach, and I just reach out to
28:31
Speaker 1: my contacts. I kind of checked the board and see
28:33
Speaker 1: who would be a good fit, and then I, you know,
28:35
Speaker 1: I reach out to the necessary people. You know. And
28:38
Speaker 1: I've heard about the European, the China, the Israel. Let's
28:42
Speaker 1: talk about that, because that's that's that's a that's a
28:44
Speaker 1: it's it's some players that play their entirely their life.
28:47
Speaker 1: In fact, you know, Stephan Marbury went over to China
28:50
Speaker 1: and became the biggest talent that he ever was in
28:53
Speaker 1: the US. So let's talk about before we wrap up.
28:56
Speaker 1: I don't want to You have the G legal course
28:59
Speaker 1: that's tied to the b A, and the NBA is
29:00
Speaker 1: also saying they are allowed veterans to come into the
29:03
Speaker 1: NBA the G League this year, something they weren't doing
29:06
Speaker 1: in the past, and so now let's talk about going overseas,
29:10
Speaker 1: the benefits of going overseas and also it's not being
29:13
Speaker 1: like a death kill to your career. Well, going over seas,
29:19
Speaker 1: you gotta make a conscious charts was like, man, I'm
29:21
Speaker 1: not chasing the NBA dream no more. If it happens,
29:24
Speaker 1: it happens. But now I want to make money and
29:26
Speaker 1: I'm trying to feed my family. So the G League
29:28
Speaker 1: is for guys that's still chasing the NBA dream because
29:30
Speaker 1: you're getting paying minimum money. But it's like, man, I
29:33
Speaker 1: wants to work from the NBA, I'm gonna keep chasing it.
29:35
Speaker 1: I tell young guys that's kind of on the edge
29:38
Speaker 1: and give yourself a chance. Go to G League for
29:40
Speaker 1: two or three years while you're still young. Tree. After
29:44
Speaker 1: two or three years, you gotta do, you know, you
29:46
Speaker 1: gotta make a business decision and go ahead and you know,
29:49
Speaker 1: try to build a financial future for you and your family.
29:52
Speaker 1: And so that's what Eric Morland did. He he played
29:56
Speaker 1: in the inn bed for four or five years, he
29:58
Speaker 1: won a championship and now he he's making you know,
30:01
Speaker 1: last year he made seven figures in China. This year
30:03
Speaker 1: he's making high six figures. So he's doing really well
30:06
Speaker 1: for himself. And that's really what it's all about, you know.
30:09
Speaker 1: In the end, it's about uh, you know you let's
30:12
Speaker 1: let's let's let's move back the NBA name. It's a business.
30:16
Speaker 1: It's like I, you know, I have a job. You
30:19
Speaker 1: have a job, Okay, the NBA playing basketball, that's your skill.
30:23
Speaker 1: You know. Some people are engineers, some people are artists,
30:26
Speaker 1: some people are teaching, some people are doctors. They played
30:29
Speaker 1: basketball for a living. So child at Israel gives them
30:34
Speaker 1: an opportunity to do what they are skilled best to do,
30:38
Speaker 1: to play basketball, put the ball in the hole. So
30:41
Speaker 1: that's what we're talking about right now. It's the business side.
30:44
Speaker 1: And don't get caught up into if I don't make
30:47
Speaker 1: an NBA man, what I'm gonna do. Well, you do
30:50
Speaker 1: a lot. You can go overseas and make a profitable living.
30:53
Speaker 1: Especially and then when you look at the w n
30:55
Speaker 1: b A the women over there, they make more money
30:58
Speaker 1: in the European leagues than they make in the w
31:00
Speaker 1: NBA league. And so and what did you say earlier?
31:03
Speaker 1: You said you play at the parks and funding how
31:04
Speaker 1: much did you get paid to do that? I was
31:06
Speaker 1: all part free exactly. Y'all be at home playing for
31:10
Speaker 1: free anyway, So don't get it twisted like this is
31:13
Speaker 1: a great living and wake up and play basketball every day.
31:16
Speaker 1: And that's why I would be at the why I'm
31:17
Speaker 1: saying the local Boys and Girls club playing for free anyway,
31:19
Speaker 1: Because you love the game. That's why I wanted to
31:21
Speaker 1: get it. You're getting paid to do something that you love.
31:24
Speaker 1: That's why I wanted to bring you on the show
31:25
Speaker 1: because of the fact that you know, we we we
31:27
Speaker 1: we know about the rich Paul's out there and the
31:29
Speaker 1: other agencies out there, but I've've been first of all,
31:32
Speaker 1: you in Houston. I wanted to shine light on you
31:34
Speaker 1: being in Houston and plus your real dude. I did
31:36
Speaker 1: my background on used to Richard. They said, it's good Chris.
31:39
Speaker 1: He keeps it real. You know, he is who he
31:41
Speaker 1: is and uh and and and he's been fortunate and
31:44
Speaker 1: blessed to be attached to very talented guys who's playing
31:47
Speaker 1: in the NBA. But like I said, I only brought
31:49
Speaker 1: up Damien's you know, Damien's name and Daron's name because
31:53
Speaker 1: it was part of your bio that was sent over
31:55
Speaker 1: to me. The most fascinating part of your relationship. All
31:58
Speaker 1: the two players that are playing in China and playing
32:00
Speaker 1: in Israel, because it goes back to the business side
32:03
Speaker 1: of the game, business side of the industry. You know,
32:05
Speaker 1: Kobe Bryant's dad, Kobere born in Italy. It really born
32:08
Speaker 1: in Italy because his dad was playing in Italy. And
32:11
Speaker 1: so this is not something short term going overseas. It's
32:14
Speaker 1: not a negative spirit. A lot of players are bypassing
32:18
Speaker 1: high school and playing in Australia playing overseas instead of
32:22
Speaker 1: saying I'm going to a G league, I'm gonna give
32:24
Speaker 1: up about one year in college. I'm gonna play with
32:26
Speaker 1: some grown men. And that's what it's all about. So
32:29
Speaker 1: what's the future of Family First Sports Firm? My friend,
32:33
Speaker 1: everybody I was asking me that, I'm like, be honest,
32:35
Speaker 1: wherever God leaves me man, Um, I'm taking it day
32:38
Speaker 1: by day, claiming by clients. UM. I have a lot
32:40
Speaker 1: of new exciting things that you can't announced yet, but
32:43
Speaker 1: that they're gonna be, you know, coming pretty soon from
32:45
Speaker 1: the groundbacking things that I don't think no other agency
32:47
Speaker 1: has that are is doing. So I'm always thinking outside
32:50
Speaker 1: of the box. And I was thinking how can that
32:52
Speaker 1: be different? You know what the whole industry is going, right,
32:55
Speaker 1: I want to make sure I'm going to left makes
32:56
Speaker 1: I'm going to opposite way. Yeah, you know, every every
33:00
Speaker 1: player is not gonna be for family first. This is
33:02
Speaker 1: for people who are believe in their step and who
33:04
Speaker 1: are confident and who about empowerment. And you know, you
33:08
Speaker 1: know some people want the comfort of man, I'm going
33:10
Speaker 1: to CIA or Rock Nation. You know they got the
33:12
Speaker 1: big name. There's some people that's like, man, you know,
33:14
Speaker 1: I want to be groundbreaking. I want to be different.
33:17
Speaker 1: I want to go on a roster where you know,
33:19
Speaker 1: I'm just a name on the on the wall. I'm
33:21
Speaker 1: one of for the climates. You know. I want to
33:23
Speaker 1: go someone to get individualized attention and where I'm gonna
33:25
Speaker 1: be an important key peace. Well, I like what you
33:28
Speaker 1: said individualized attention because that's what you get when you
33:32
Speaker 1: go to these big agents and you don't get apologize,
33:34
Speaker 1: you don't get you can be uh forgotten peace. If
33:38
Speaker 1: you don't get the contract, they won't nurture your next step.
33:41
Speaker 1: And that's what you do with your firm. And I
33:44
Speaker 1: want to thank you for coming on money making conversations.
33:46
Speaker 1: Share your story and I'm proud of your man. And
33:48
Speaker 1: any time these little you know, these the these the
33:52
Speaker 1: projects that you want to announce, please come on Money
33:54
Speaker 1: Made Conversation. What I like to do. This I like
33:56
Speaker 1: to do Chris. And next time, let's bring your wife
33:58
Speaker 1: on the show too, because she found this first year
34:01
Speaker 1: and so I love doing that power couple uh interviews.
34:05
Speaker 1: And so next time you come on the show, let's
34:07
Speaker 1: bring on the show and talk about her contributions to
34:10
Speaker 1: why this company was found in the twining their team,
34:12
Speaker 1: but more importantly, used me as a legitimate sounding board
34:16
Speaker 1: to put your brands out their ideas you have out
34:18
Speaker 1: there if you want your clients interviewed on my on
34:20
Speaker 1: the show. As you can see, I'm a major player
34:23
Speaker 1: in the platform world. I get the biggest talent. I'm
34:26
Speaker 1: a major player, man, you know. And in the game.
34:29
Speaker 1: He start asking me what you what you like man,
34:31
Speaker 1: I'm a major player in the business. That's what I
34:34
Speaker 1: come on, Chris. Well, Chris, we talked soon. Brother. I
34:37
Speaker 1: appreciate you, man, really appreciate you man, and I love
34:40
Speaker 1: your talent. Man. That that Fox kid man, I was
34:42
Speaker 1: sold on when he dropped those tears and Damien when
34:45
Speaker 1: he made the knicks. US say, brother, that's hard working.
34:47
Speaker 1: A lot of blessings. Man. We got real news. Man,
