- 0:23podcast feed. If you haven't done that yet,
- 0:26feel free to pause and do that now.
- 0:28And when you're ready, let's dive into God's.
- 0:31Word Together In Acts chapter 8, we see
- 0:45several stories centered on the Holy Spirit's work through
- 0:47Philip healings, gospel proclamation, and the baptism of
- 0:51an Ethiopian on the road. Before we get there, we're
- 0:54introduced to what is really a new section in the book of Acts.
- 0:57If you remember, Acts began with the disciples in Jerusalem and
- 1:00everything we've seen up to this point has taken place in
- 1:02Jerusalem. In Acts chapter 1 though, Jesus
- 1:05tips us off as to what is coming.
- 1:08Listen to Jesus words in Acts 1, seven and eight.
- 1:11He said to them, It is not for you to know times or epochs
- 1:14which the Father has fixed by His own authority, but you will
- 1:17receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and
- 1:20you shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea
- 1:23and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.
- 1:27Jesus tells of the arrival of the Holy Spirit, then tells the
- 1:30disciples that they will be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea,
- 1:34Samaria, and the remotest parts of the earth.
- 1:37And those locations essentially serve as the outline for the
- 1:40book of Acts, with new sections of the book beginning as the
- 1:44Gospel breaks through into new regions by the power of the Holy
- 1:47Spirit. And here in Acts 8 we see that
- 1:50move outward from Jerusalem and further into Judea.
- 1:53But what I want you to notice is what drives that move.
- 1:57Listen again to verse one. Saul was in hearty agreement
- 2:00with putting him to death. And on that day a great
- 2:03persecution began against the church in Jerusalem, and they
- 2:06were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and
- 2:08Samaria, except the apostles. And now listen to verse 4.
- 2:12Describe what happens to those scattered by persecution.
- 2:15Therefore, those who had been scattered went about preaching
- 2:18the word. So you see, it was the very
- 2:21persecution intended to stop the spread of the gospel message
- 2:25that led to its advancement throughout the region.
- 2:28In fact, we're told this explicitly a few chapters later
- 2:31in Acts 11, verse 19, which says so when those who were scattered
- 2:35because of the persecution that occurred in connection with
- 2:37Stephen made their way to Phoenicia and Cyprus and
- 2:40Antioch, speaking the word to no one except to Jews alone.
- 2:44Think about what's happening here.
- 2:46Persecution, the execution of a Christian leader.
- 2:49The authorities think this is what ought to stamp out the
- 2:52faith, what ought to put a stop to those trouble making Jesus
- 2:55followers. But in reality, the opposite is
- 2:58true. Persecution paves the pathway
- 3:01for gospel proclamation. Only God could plan it this way.
- 3:05The God of whom Joseph spoke when he told his brothers in
- 3:07Genesis 50, As for you, you meant evil against me, but God
- 3:12meant it for good. The God who causes all things to
- 3:15work together for good. To those who love God, to those
- 3:18who are called according to His purpose, this is our God.
- 3:21And He is still working this way today.
- 3:24Not just despite the chaos around us, but through it.
- 3:27Not just despite the brokenness of the world, but through it.
- 3:31Not just despite our own weakness, but through it.
- 3:34So do not fear, do not faint, do not retreat from faithfulness
- 3:38when all hope seems lost. Believe the words of our Saviour
- 3:42when he says in the world, you have tribulation, but take
- 3:46courage. I have overcome the world.
