Transcript
- 0:00Hey guys, welcome back to the Lila Rose podcast where you're
- 0:03at the new set. I hope you guys like it.
- 0:04We've been working on this for a long time for you and there's
- 0:07going to be more changes as time goes by.
- 0:10Let me know what you think in the comments.
- 0:11Today I'm sitting down with my very dearly loved brother Paul
- 0:16Paul Rose of the YouTube channel Sing the hours.
- 0:19This conversation's a little different than my typical
- 0:21podcast conversations. I'll be honest because, well,
- 0:24you'll see. It was just hard to not stop
- 0:26laughing talking to him because he's crazy and hilarious, but he
- 0:30also is very cool and is doing some very neat things.
- 0:33We talked about his ministry, sing the hours, we talked about
- 0:36the faith, we talked about martyrs and having the strength
- 0:38to follow God no matter what the cost may be and so much more.
- 0:42I hope you enjoy this conversation.
- 0:44Or we can just start. Just get started.
- 0:46Introduce yourself. Me first.
- 0:49Introduce. Are you the host?
- 0:51It's. My show so.
- 0:52Wait, this is part of the show. Introduce you.
- 0:56Sorry. Hi, I'm Paul Rose and I am
- 0:59Lila's best younger brother and I'm happy to be here.
- 1:05My. Sister, isn't that my camera?
- 1:07Talk to me. No, dude, the people and I have
- 1:10a connection. We talk all the time.
- 1:12I want to talk to them, all right?
- 1:14They're my new friends. It's like an interview format
- 1:16where you just like talk to each.
- 1:17Other I think it's weird, like on CNN when they don't look at
- 1:20the camera and just look at each other.
- 1:22These are my friends. OK, so you're my little brother.
- 1:28I'm glad that that's the first thing that you thought of when
- 1:30you were introducing yourself, because you know.
- 1:33Do you want to start over or was?
- 1:34That OK, I mean, didn't you want to talk about what you do?
- 1:38Like your show? Your ministry?
- 1:40Oh yeah, that's not a ministry, but.
- 1:42OK, sorry. Yeah.
- 1:44So we should start over. This is this is crazy.
- 1:47Can we just roll? It no, no, don't, don't undo
- 1:49what we did because we might use it.
- 1:51So, Lila, it's great to be here. I am your little brother.
- 1:57See. It's weird to talk to you.
- 1:58I'm Lila's little brother. Talk to me, Paul.
- 2:00It's just a, it's just a conversation.
- 2:02Pretend we're with friends at a table, but you're still talking
- 2:05to me. OK, I would still look at my.
- 2:07Friends. But you're talking to me in this
- 2:09moment, so. Lila is my sister.
- 2:16I do a project called Sing Me Hours in which I.
- 2:27I might need some. Milk I need a little copy of.
- 2:32Milk. OK, so Lila, Yes.
- 2:35But you know what I do? To this SO.
- 2:36Fake. Why would I tell you what I do?
- 2:38Be cut. Just just just pretend for a
- 2:40moment, just talk about, just just be chill.
- 2:43Just like I'm chill. What do you do?
- 2:44What do you? What do you tell me about
- 2:46yourself? I do as you.
- 2:56Wow. I am I am Lila Rose's brother.
- 3:08We've established that. I do a podcast.
- 3:11It's called Sing the Hours. It's called I, I Sing the Hours.
- 3:16That's great. That's.
- 3:19Awesome. I love that for you.
- 3:23I love. That called the Divine Office.
- 3:25That's great. Yeah, that's I love your sing
- 3:28the Hours. Yeah, so I sing the hours and.
- 3:32What does that mean? What does it mean to sing the
- 3:34What are the hours? What are you singing?
- 3:36Yeah, so the Catholic Church and other faith traditions in
- 3:41Christendom have the discipline of singing the Psalms.
- 3:46It used to be before clocks existed at the at the divisions
- 3:51approximately every three hours of the day.
- 3:53Now it's literally every three hours a day, so 6 AM, 9:00 AM,
- 3:57noon, etcetera. And every Catholic priest you've
- 3:59ever met makes a vow to do this at their ordination.
- 4:02It's part of their vow to like obedience to the Bishop and
- 4:05celibacy. Priests also pledged to do all
- 4:09these psalms, and that's what it's made of.
- 4:10It's made of psalms, as in the Psalms of David from the Bible.
- 4:13That's its primary content. The special thing about it and
- 4:17the reason why this project exists is because it is the
- 4:22principal way in which lay people are invited to
- 4:26participate in the liturgical life of the Church.
- 4:29All right, So what is lay people who are lay people?
- 4:32Chips lay people are the it's people who are not her name.
- 4:38Was that an authentic laugh? OK, so lay people, I'm a lay
- 4:45person. You're a layperson.
- 4:47Franco is a layperson. Yeah.
- 4:50So as opposed to like a priest or religious.
- 4:55And priest and religious make various degrees of vows to pray
- 4:58the Psalms, sing the Psalms all the time.
- 5:01But lay people are invited very, very strongly, cordially to do
- 5:07the liturgy, the hours. And it's, it's a very strange
- 5:10type of liturgy because #1 by content, it's actually the
- 5:16majority of liturgy is liturgy. The hours.
- 5:17Of course, we have the Mass and then we have Sacramento
- 5:19liturgies like baptism or even like exorcisms, which is
- 5:23somewhat liturgical. But liturgy the hours is like
- 5:27most of the liturgical life by like airtime of the church.
- 5:32And yet it's the liturgy people are least familiar with.
- 5:34And yet it's the type of liturgy that you don't even need a
- 5:37priest to do, which is why, like a bunch of people could discern
- 5:40to be nuns, like the martyrs of Cambien, and they dedicate their
- 5:44lives to doing authentic liturgy all the time.
- 5:47But they're just sisters and lay people.
- 5:49They're basically lay people. Like religious people are not
- 5:50ordained. So we got the lay people, and
- 5:53you mentioned the liturgical calendar a few times.
- 5:55Are liturgy. What is liturgy?
- 5:58I think people think of the word and maybe if they're familiar
- 6:00with it, they think like some sort of a ritual in a church.
- 6:03Liturgy is just a beautiful, beautiful concept.
- 6:06It's what isn't liturgy in to a Christian to a Christian who
- 6:10participates in an Apostolic community.
- 6:12It's like liturgy is the tearing of the veil between heaven and
- 6:15earth. Liturgy is a participation in
- 6:18the wedding feast of the Lamb. Liturgy is is our boot camp for
- 6:23our heavenly destiny, which is eternally praising God and being
- 6:26one with Christ in the Trinity and gazing and having a great
- 6:29time. And like liturgy is, it means in
- 6:33Greek a work, work for the people, work on behalf of the
- 6:36people, public work, even public works.
- 6:39So liturgy involves people coming together to enter into
- 6:42the Trinitarian mystery. It involves things passed down
- 6:46from the apostles to us like the Psalms, like that's another
- 6:49feature of Christian liturgy is that it's almost entirely
- 6:52made-up of breathing and living out Scripture and singing.
- 6:56And liturgy is is a communal act.
- 6:58Liturgy is an act of worship. There's so many answers.
- 7:01And I just rattled off like we could take any one of those
- 7:04titles that we just like rattled off and that could be a whole
- 7:07episode. That's.
- 7:08Good, that's good. I think maybe there's this sort
- 7:12of sense about liturgy for those that are not already like really
- 7:15aware of it and in it that's maybe boring or out of touch in
- 7:19some way, or it's just like very religious act that's kind of
- 7:21dry. Yeah.
- 7:23But with liturgy and sing the hours like my encounter with
- 7:26your ministry, not ministry. And I don't like that word.
- 7:28You can explain that. Why don't you like the ministry?
- 7:31It's fine. I'm just not a minister.
- 7:33I'm not like abdained. So I mean, I, it might be an
- 7:36apostle, I might call it now or a a project, but I mean what I'm
- 7:40doing in the lurge of the hours is the prayer of the whole
- 7:42church. It's not my ministry.
- 7:44I'm simply just like, I'm like A at best, I'm a loudspeaker for
- 7:50and nobody's like shout out to the loud speakers at the
- 7:52baseball game. They're really helping out know
- 7:53it's about the game. It's about the there's a game
- 7:56much bigger than what I'm presenting and it's very
- 7:59important. You know, what's so cool,
- 8:00though, is with the sing the hours and the and the Liturgy of
- 8:03the Hours is that you have the Psalms, yes, which are, you
- 8:07know, King David, obviously, I think he's written.
- 8:09Did he write all of them? Are there any that we're not?
- 8:11Writing. Some church fathers say that he
- 8:12wrote all of them. Some say that he clearly wrote
- 8:16most of them, but not all of them.
- 8:17But I think he wrote. All Yeah.
- 8:18And then you have Jesus speaking the Psalms, and on the cross he
- 8:22said words on the Psalms. He sung.
- 8:23He sung them. In my meditation on the cross, I
- 8:26don't imagine him going oh God my God, why you're saking me?
- 8:29I imagine him going oh God my God, why have you forsaken me?
- 8:34He much more realistic and that's why modern TV can't get
- 8:39any ancient Christian or Jewish person correct because we live
- 8:43in a post singing culture. That's why even like Lord of the
- 8:46Rings was very special because even they, they had the courage
- 8:49to show like like Aragorn sing a little bit and they had the
- 8:53courage to show The Hobbit singing because Tolkien every
- 8:563rd page or whatever of Lord of the Rings is song, right?
- 9:00Like the Ant sing and everybody sings.
- 9:02Tolkien is not creating an idealized world.
- 9:05He's creating a human a, a, a real world.
- 9:08Whereas we lose reality when we lose a culture that sings for
- 9:13the sake of its itself, not for the sake of consuming music.
- 9:18Like I'm going to listen to it to help with this or to make me
- 9:20feel this way or to like we, we now consume music and we are now
- 9:24the receiver of music as if we're all Lords and kings.
- 9:27And very, there's very little experience of directing music to
- 9:31the Lord and king in a way that is grounded.
- 9:34And what's beautiful about the Psalms, as you say, is that in
- 9:37the liturgy, the hours, and in liturgy, it's about
- 9:41participating in Christ's voice and David's voice in the case of
- 9:44the Psalms, and giving God's own own words back to him.
- 9:47So instead of us like making stuff up and like making up a
- 9:51song that pleases our ear and a song that, you know, has
- 9:54theology that we think is palatable to us and makes us
- 9:57feel good. Like so many of the worship
- 9:59music, which is far from worship music as it would be understood
- 10:02in ancient Christianity Today is just like stuff that puts Jesus
- 10:06in a various safe box that we can we that's palatable to us.
- 10:11It's very rare to hear a modern worship song that really
- 10:14succinctly says something like create a clean heart in me, Oh
- 10:18God, renew in me a steadfast spirit.
- 10:21Have mercy on me. God in your goodness, in your
- 10:25compassion, blot out my offense. I never even heard of modern
- 10:29song that talks about my offense.
- 10:31It's like the Psalms have a depth of because it's God's
- 10:33words, it's God's perfect sacrifice of song that we then
- 10:38participate in. And when you give God's own
- 10:40words back to him, it's a perfect sacrifice because that's
- 10:43what Christ is, victim and priest, right?
- 10:46And in Mass, we receive Christ's victimhood for the salvation of
- 10:52our souls and forgiveness of our sins.
- 10:55But Mass is not about what we bring to the table.
- 10:57Jesus brings everything to the table.
- 10:59In the Liturgy of the Hours, we get the chance to give Christ
- 11:04the only thing possible that we could bring to the table, which
- 11:07is praise. Ourselves as a gift of praise.
- 11:10A gift of a sacrifice of praise. There's only two things
- 11:14centrally call it a sacrifice of praise in Christian history. 1
- 11:18is the Eucharist the the the body, blood, soul and divinity
- 11:21of God-given to us, and the other is literally the ours.
- 11:25They're both called interchangeably, the sacrifice
- 11:27of praise, which means that the the the call of Christ, the gift
- 11:32of Christ is the Eucharist, the response, the response, the
- 11:37thank you note which which helps us in in dwell that mystery in
- 11:43US is the liturgy ours. It's pretty awesome.

- 13:09checkout for a full 20% off your. 1st order and you guys can
- 13:13check out Sing the Hours at Paul's Tube channel, which we're
- 13:16linking. But you're kind of crazy and
- 13:19insane in that you are producing 2 original Singing the Hours,
- 13:23Vespers, and Lods. So you have two parts of the
- 13:27liturgy. There's more to the Liturgy of
- 13:28the Hours during the day, but you've picked.
- 13:30Why did you pick just these two parts?
- 13:32Are there 6 or 7? How many different offices?
- 13:34Are you count A? A priest is required to do
- 13:39Office of Readings at least one of the daytime offices.
- 13:42There are three Lods, Vespers, and Confidence, so the minimum
- 13:47that you're going to do is 5. And you recommend 2 at minimum
- 13:50for laypeople lots and vespers for just everyday people?
- 13:54There's no rule. Do as much as you want or don't
- 13:56want. So, so if you're a, if you're a,
- 13:59you know, for those who are listening here may be
- 14:00evangelicals, let's call you a Bible believing Christian,
- 14:03You're a Catholic, you're Orthodox, you would say, and
- 14:06you're a layperson. You're not a priest, you're not
- 14:08a Bishop. It doesn't matter who you are.
- 14:10You're a mother working busy day.
- 14:12You're in an office, you're whatever you're doing your
- 14:15student. You would say to to make your
- 14:18daily rhythm be part of the rhythm of the really the life of
- 14:21the church, the life of God to it's the Bible, it's the Psalms.
- 14:26And it's not just recitation, it's actually singing it, which
- 14:30I think it's hard for some people, quite frankly, because
- 14:32some people are gifted with the song, with the gift of a great
- 14:35voice. And I think a lot of people,
- 14:37it's a little bit scary to like sing their prayer.
- 14:40Maybe some people that's wonderful and they love it.
- 14:42Why is the singing so important? So I don't know the exact
- 14:47citation and I'm sorry I don't know the exact number, but I do
- 14:51know and we all know if we read the Bible that the command to
- 14:56sing when we're addressing God is pretty common.
- 14:59It's very common, not just the Psalms, even the New Testament.
- 15:04James says it is any of you joyful?
- 15:05Let him sing. I mean, we have in most like if
- 15:13you walked into our Eastern, a Ukrainian Christian in their
- 15:18Ukrainian liturgy they don't say many words.
- 15:22In a Greek liturgy, they don't say any words.
- 15:25In a Maronite liturgy, you might hear 2 words said.
- 15:28I'm talking about other other ancient Christianity.
- 15:31I think it is a very fixed idea throughout all of Christian
- 15:35history that prayer, when you address God, you address them in
- 15:39song, not just because of the obviousness of that in
- 15:41Scripture, but because when you sing, you are actually involving
- 15:49your whole self. It becomes something where I
- 15:51mean, you can talk, you can take it from a scientific angle, the
- 15:53brain and how the the information processors are
- 15:57involved when you're when you're talking, but then the limbic
- 16:01system, the middle brain is what gets in the cockpit when you're
- 16:04singing. And then it actually fires off
- 16:06many different almost like taking some sort of supplement
- 16:10it like, but more mysteriously than that.
- 16:12Why is it that most people who stutter, who have these weird
- 16:17corruptions in there, they have these strange dysfunctions in
- 16:23neural pathways that regard speech and speech is super
- 16:25insidious because everything is involved with speech.
- 16:28If you close your eyes right now, Lila, and close your eyes,
- 16:30everybody, I'm going to look at the camera for this and close
- 16:32your eyes. Camel.
- 16:34What just popped into your head? Nothing.
- 16:37No, no, the think of what in your mind's eye what just
- 16:41happened when I said camel? And just now I thought of a
- 16:45picture of a camel. A picture trying to do that on
- 16:46purpose but. No, but you can't help it.
- 16:49You can't help it. I guarantee you that if I say.
- 16:50And that's what you wanted me to do.
- 16:51But honestly, before when you did it, nothing came into.
- 16:54Mind if I say any word? I don't know.
- 16:55If I say any word, the image of said word will pop up in your
- 16:58head because the processor code. Like a physical, like you see it
- 17:02almost. In your mind's eye.
- 17:03Well, you, you know what? You there's a perception.
- 17:05You understand what's being said.
- 17:07But everything is attached to words.
- 17:09All of our understanding of reality is attached to language.
- 17:12So a person with a stutter, it's a very difficult thing for an
- 17:14adult person with a stuttered to, to go through therapy
- 17:18because it is very, very insidious in terms of how many
- 17:23neural pathways a speech hang up.
- 17:26Like I have friends who are scared to go on planes and every
- 17:28time they go on a plane, they get petrified, right?
- 17:31Sometimes I feel that way, but it's like that's confined only
- 17:35to flying 40,000 feet above the ground.
- 17:37But if every time you're forming speech, you, you, your brain
- 17:40goes into this, this whole thing that's very bad.
- 17:42But I was, I was even working with a, a young man.
- 17:45I'm, I, my, my day job is, I'm a public speaking coach.
- 17:47And when I was a child and like many children, I had a stutter.
- 17:50So I'm very familiar with all this, like, yeah, but.
- 17:53It's crazy. Yeah.
- 17:54It's amazing how far you've come, Paul.
- 17:59Thank you, Lila. Very elegant.
- 18:00Yeah. So I was working with a young
- 18:02man and I said OK, just sing it, which is a well known thing.
- 18:07All my speech pathologists out there, what have you.
- 18:09I mean, people even with debilitating stutters, tend to
- 18:13lose it when they're singing. Why?
- 18:15Because the singing it, it, it breaks the feedback loop of
- 18:20because the limbic system sends out these terror signals, but
- 18:22the singing goes to the very heart and soul of your body and
- 18:26your brain, and it then sends these different signals on all
- 18:29those speech patterns. And it's pretty awesome.
- 18:32So, Paul, have you done your Vespers yet?
- 18:34No, but I would love to. Let's just do like a minute to
- 18:37show people how. To minute, Why don't we do 15
- 18:39minutes? How long do you usually do these
- 18:40episodes? 15 minutes.
- 18:42Let's just let's just do like a couple lines just to show.
- 18:44People, I don't, so I I'll sing a song with you from Vespers,
- 18:48but I'm not. I don't do a couple lines of
- 18:49Vespers once I'm in. I don't even let a a natural
- 18:53disaster prevent me from finishing once I start.
- 18:56Very, very nice. I mean, think about it, If, if,
- 18:58if, if I'm in the zone and I'm offering the sacrifice, I'm not
- 19:01going to stop. OK, so you use I Breviary.
- 19:03So walk through people how they do this if they want to join
- 19:07this ancient pair of the church based on Holy Scripture that for
- 19:11thousands of years Christians have prayed.
- 19:13You don't have to be any particular stripe of Christian,
- 19:15Orthodox Catholic. So you can be any, you can be
- 19:18any Christian anywhere. And yeah, there's this app
- 19:23called I Breviary. It's free, right?
- 19:26Yes, yes it is. Free.
- 19:28No, sorry. Yes, totally free.
- 19:30OK, yeah, totally free. So let's do a.
- 19:34Let's just do 1. Yeah.
- 19:35So we're going to do how this is done.
- 19:37We're just going to do the Tuesday 1.
- 19:38So we're we're though you use the word sing but sing the
- 19:41hours, but it's it's actually chant the hours, no.
- 19:43Yeah, I'm chanting. It's.
- 19:44Chant. It's chanting, yeah.
- 19:46Oh yeah. Oh yeah, look.
- 19:48The point is, everybody, Jesus is waiting to hear you sing him
- 19:52a love song. That's all I've got to say.
- 19:53And if you do. Don't.
- 19:54No, I remember. You don't offer him vegetables
- 19:56like Cain. I love, I extremely love your
- 19:59passion and zeal and what you've done with this ministry,
- 20:02whatever you want to call it, a pasta.
- 20:03It's it's truly amazing what Paul has done.
- 20:05But I remember you said something to me a couple years
- 20:08ago that really stuck where you said, have you ever thought,
- 20:12have you ever imagined visualized Jesus, our Lord and
- 20:15Savior singing? Yeah.
- 20:17Have you ever thought about him singing?
- 20:20What would it have sounded like if Jesus sang?
- 20:23That sounds like a what we're about to do right now.
- 20:25Let's. Let's do it.
- 20:26All right. Well, maybe, maybe more.
- 20:28You you're, you're the, you're the professional.
- 20:30So let's just do a very. We'll do OK.
- 20:33Which one are we going to? Night per right or evening per
- 20:36evening per Yeah. OK, the second Psalm we can
- 20:39start with. That OK, the second Psalm.
- 20:40We can start with the second Psalm.
- 20:42That's fine. All right, we'll just do it.
- 20:43It's the short. Psalm Psalm one, 25131 is the
- 20:46second Psalm Short psalms a piece of cake.
- 20:48It's not even going to take us 10 one minute.
- 20:49It'll take us 30 seconds. OK, All right, so we're just
- 20:51going to do it. OK, so it starts with an
- 20:58antiphon. So we trade off you, you say a.
- 21:00Sigma by two lines, Yeah. So here we go.
- 21:02Let's do it in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of
- 21:06the Holy Spirit, as I was. Amen.
- 21:12Unless you acquire the heart of a child, you cannot enter the
- 21:16Kingdom of God. Oh Lord, my heart is not proud,
- 21:22nor haughty, my eyes. I have not.
- 21:27Oh gosh, sorry. Only go lower.
- 21:31I'll start lower. That's fine.
- 21:32I, I I I have not I'll. Start lowering no and I'll.
- 21:37I have not gone after things too great nor marvels beyond me.
- 21:43Truly, I have set my soul in silence and peace.
- 21:48As a child has rest, as a child has rest in its mother's arms,
- 21:53Even so my soul. O Israel, hope in the Lord both
- 21:58now and forever. Glory to the Father and to the
- 22:04Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is
- 22:09now and will be forever running. Unless you acquire the heart of
- 22:16a child, you cannot enter the Kingdom of God.
- 22:22So what's beautiful about that? First of all, lovely.
- 22:28It's great. It's great.
- 22:29There's no, there's no joyful noise that's going to displease
- 22:32the Lord. And whenever, no, it's
- 22:34beautiful. And, and even for myself, if
- 22:36I'm, if I'm like on an airplane, because I'll still chant.
- 22:40I, I just, I do it. No matter where I am, I chant.

- 24:31Well, it's true. Like if.
- 24:32Like if you practice, if you do this daily within.
- 24:37Three days, it'll be a piece of cake.
- 24:39It's so amazing how much the. Yeah, But the other cool thing
- 24:43about it is that I often contemplate Andrea Bocelli has a
- 24:47great voice, But Andrea Bocelli's voice compared to the
- 24:51cherubim and seraphim who sing God's praises eternally, Andrea
- 24:55Bocelli sounds like a trash can. So in terms of the margin of
- 25:00difference between you and I, Andrea Bocelli and then the
- 25:04cherubim? Are you saying that you are the
- 25:08Seraphin and I'm Andrea Bocelli and I sound like a trash can?
- 25:12I'm saying that you, me and Andrea Bocelli are all the same
- 25:14in God's eyes in terms of the singing, because.
- 25:16It's OK, I know I'm not as good of a singer as you.
- 25:19I accept. And I know I'm not as good as
- 25:21Andrea Bocelli or a Cherubim, but I never will be.
- 25:23But I can still. I mean, all I have is my little.
- 25:26Well, it's like the drummer boy. Like, you know, the little
- 25:28Drummer boy. Yeah, what can I give him?
- 25:32But yeah, so. You just.
- 25:34You just give God's own own words back to him, I think.
- 25:36That's like the little like little kids, like if you go to
- 25:38like a kids concert or you see your little kid singing, they
- 25:41have no, they just belt it out. You know, they're just on on.
- 25:46They're just full of joy. There's no, I mean, now it's
- 25:49it's easy to be self-conscious, to be honest on this podcast
- 25:51because it's like a podcast and it's for the YouTube channel.
- 25:53It's a podcast. This is a podcast.
- 25:57But anyways, the point I think you're making, which I love, is
- 26:01that just give them your heart and just put your heart into it
- 26:04and. And do it with other people too.
- 26:06Like it's a that's the beautiful thing about this is that I was
- 26:09on a retreat recently. We, we ran a Sing the hours
- 26:12retreat. And there's a really phenomenal
- 26:15thing that happens when nobody's microphone and nobody has an
- 26:17instrument. If you got like 30, even, even
- 26:21if you had 10 people and now you're all chanting the Psalms
- 26:23and now you're, there's just one voice that comes out of it.
- 26:26After a few lines you guys get In Sync and even if you have 4.
- 26:30People at the beach, the. Other day and what happens is
- 26:33then it's like wait a second there is a body of Christ and
- 26:35wait a second, there is a oneness.
- 26:38We're all one in Christ Jesus because we're literally in his
- 26:41words right now and we're offering him our words.
- 26:43So every he's All in all in this circumstance and our
- 26:46relationship to each other is as Co experiencers of the word of
- 26:51God and our voices then become one.
- 26:54And humans are really good at when there's enough, you know,
- 26:56enough force of when there's enough people, eventually, like
- 27:00the pitch becomes pretty good, you know, and it's a really
- 27:04phenomenal experience to strip away all the modern hang ups we
- 27:06have where we amplify everything and we got so many instruments
- 27:10for jamming into it. And now and now we get this this
- 27:12like it's now about the music instead of the word and what we
- 27:17just we were meditating on the word.
- 27:18We were just chewing on scripture, aside from the false
- 27:21start at the beginning, which is beautiful.
- 27:22I love that you. Oh, it's OK.
- 27:25But no, I mean, so you, if you think about it, it's it's about
- 27:29the Scripture first. The music is there as a vehicle
- 27:34of beauty, a vehicle of unity, and a vehicle of raising up the
- 27:42whole body, the breath into the experience.
- 27:45And so when you that prayer is so foreign to most Christians in
- 27:50general, no matter what kind of Christian you are, how often do
- 27:54you have such a, you know, a communal, truly servant minded
- 28:00experience of Scripture? And that's why liturgy hours is
- 28:02so special. And this isn't my like thing.
- 28:04It's like this is what they did at the Abbey today.
- 28:07That's what every lonely priest does in his rectory by itself at
- 28:10night. Just.
- 28:11To brag on what you're doing. It's really, I think again, I'm
- 28:14no expert the way Paul is on this, but what I can see looking
- 28:17at you and this has been a project years in the making, is
- 28:19that you see, this is like very special gem.
- 28:23It's literally a gem of the church that we have the Psalms.
- 28:26First of all, like the Psalms are incredible.
- 28:28These are the prayers to pray, right?
- 28:29These are the prayers Jesus prayed.
- 28:31They're the prayers that we all throughout Christendom have
- 28:33prayed. How do, well, do we know our
- 28:35Psalms? Do we do we sing them?
- 28:36Do we pray them daily? We should pray the Psalms daily.
- 28:39But then you're not just praying any old Psalms daily.
- 28:41You're doing this in union with the rest of the church
- 28:44throughout Christendom for, for centuries.
- 28:46But what I love that you're done, Paul, is you've you
- 28:49haven't modernized it like with like string, the guitar, like
- 28:52let's modernize it, but you're just bringing it through a
- 28:55modern medium podcast and all this stuff.
- 28:58You're doing it with your voice, which, you know, you used to
- 29:00want to be like Justin Bieber, right?
- 29:03So you've got the Oh yeah, you've got the cool, but your
- 29:06voice is beautiful. But it's not, it's not like a
- 29:09opera voice, you know? It's not like a.
- 29:11I've actually had to unlearn a lot of in order to pray
- 29:14properly, I've had to strip down a lot of stylistic things that I
- 29:18learned in order because because now even when I record, it
- 29:21really is I'm just I, I. Meaning you've gotten less
- 29:25poppy. Over time with this podcast, my
- 29:28voice is my voice, yeah. And my voice is they're.
- 29:31Not saying that in a negative. Way sure, sure.
- 29:32No, no, but but yeah, I mean the very medium itself, there's no
- 29:36rhythm in the enchant so I'm not confound to a beat.
- 29:39It's not going to get you get your hips moving.
- 29:43It's just it's designed to move the soul.
- 29:45But. What I love about what you're
- 29:47doing is that you have now have how many millions of views and
- 29:51downloads with. Different a lot.
- 29:52Yeah, like millions of people, you know, at least hundreds of
- 29:56thousands are doing these prayer.
- 29:58Yeah, but so many millions more do it and you know, it's not.
- 30:02It's the beautiful thing. I was thinking about this
- 30:04tonight. If we had done what time is it?
- 30:06So we just missed it. But if we had done Complan a few
- 30:08minutes ago, I think they do it at 9:00, we would have done it
- 30:14exactly. And this is the cool thing.
- 30:16If you ever do do the hours on the hour, you don't have to as
- 30:20like people, even with priests, there's not strict rules.
- 30:22But what's so cool is that sometimes if I, if it's 9:00 PM,
- 30:27I'll be like, I gotta do confident.
- 30:28Now you know why? Because then I know for a fact
- 30:30that on the East Coast, I will guarantee you that at least at
- 30:34that moment, at least on any given day, 5000, people are now
- 30:41singing or praying the exact same text.
- 30:43So you get this. Wait a second.
- 30:46I am now mystically being united because that's what liturgy does
- 30:50too, is liturgy unites you across time and space.
- 30:54And when one Mass is offered in a in a Chapel, it's still Jesus
- 30:59offering himself with the whole world.
- 31:01That's why you can, you can pray for souls anywhere.
- 31:03And the Mass is all-encompassing literacy hours is like that too.
- 31:07And the sign of the literacy hours being like that is is in
- 31:10some ways more visible because like just up the road at that
- 31:14Abbey. If we now anytime you're at work
- 31:17now that you now that you know what they do and you can look at
- 31:20their schedule online. It's the same schedule that is
- 31:21for the global church. If you the other day I woke up
- 31:25at five, 5:30 AM because my baby and it was 530 AM on the dot and
- 31:30I started doing office of readings.
- 31:31Guess what? Unbeknownst to me, that's when
- 31:33they were doing their office of readings down the road.
- 31:35And I was even chanting because they do all the old music and I
- 31:38do the old music and I do it with the right, you know,
- 31:41matching it up, right. I was singing the same stuff and
- 31:43probably the same tune. They were singing it up the
- 31:45road. So now it's not, it's not just
- 31:47you singing. You're I was united to those,
- 31:49you know, 60-70 monks, They're Even so that close.
- 31:52That's a really powerful idea. It's really special and nobody
- 31:56is like having to make a movement.
- 31:58Like it's, it's not even a movement that I could make
- 32:00because the movement is like 10 billion strong in heaven right
- 32:03now because heaven and earth all do it together.
- 32:05I'm certain of that. And so like the movement's
- 32:07there. So it's like just jump in, you
- 32:09know, like be a, be a part of it.
- 32:11The prayer is universal. It's incredible that that that
- 32:15mystery is, it's brilliant because the center of the
- 32:18mystery is the fact that Christ, it has truly overcome the world.
- 32:23And that's the sign of it. I think about Cavemen all the
- 32:25time. Cavemen did horrible things.
- 32:29But your ancestor was a caveman and my ancestor was a caveman.
- 32:32And that caveman had the same DNA we did.
- 32:34And those male, no, listen, this is important.
- 32:36Those male Cavemen were especially brutal.
- 32:39Males are no good, not good news.
- 32:41They would. They would pillage another tribe
- 32:43and do terrible things. My gosh.
- 32:45We do that. Today, no, but but it was a more
- 32:47of a universal but like like Cain was like 50% of humans were
- 32:50murderers at one point with Cain and Abel, whatever.
- 32:52So here's the crazy. Thing.
- 32:55Whatever they probably they they murdered all of humanity with
- 32:59their sin. Anyway.
- 33:00The crazy thing is the miracle of the caveman is that the
- 33:04creature with the same DNA like mountain lions back then behave
- 33:08the same way mountain lions behave now.
- 33:09But God exists and were made in his image because of you have
- 33:14the image in the 11th century of a whole group of maybe 1000
- 33:19monks in a monastery and rather than 1000 monks and a monster
- 33:22being together and their ancestors all would have wanted
- 33:25to murder everyone else and be the top alpha.
- 33:28But wait. For it I lost.
- 33:31Wait for it, I truly lost. Her now the same creature in the
- 33:36monastery whose ancestors all killed each other, is now
- 33:39singing together. Salva Regina.
- 33:46They're thinking about a woman together, not in a lustful way,
- 33:49not in a domineering way. Like I mean, come on, chance.
- 33:54The the chance of the church. I have done more for the rights
- 33:58of man and the human dignity of the creature.
- 34:00It also proves the existence of God.
- 34:02Because I'm telling you right now, no anthropologist, no
- 34:05biologist, no person could possibly explain if the Holy
- 34:09Spirit didn't do something crazy and Jesus didn't come to earth
- 34:122000 years ago. If you can have the same
- 34:15creature with the same DNA in 1000AD meeting together, not to
- 34:20murder each other and compete for resources, but just to sing
- 34:29and be celibate like what is happening here.
- 34:33That's why it's important that we we preserve these traditions
- 34:36because there are there are contradiction of the times, but
- 34:39they're also they not just for the especially for the beauty
- 34:43they they reveal the nature of God and the exalted nature of
- 34:47man redeemed in a really special way.
- 34:50Sorry for that Tang. You can cut all that out if you
- 34:53want. That's that's the bonus episode
- 34:55right there, the caveman rant. I know I, I, I lost you.
- 34:58Just cut it out. I lost you.
- 35:00You going? To cut that out.
- 35:01We'll see. We haven't been cutting much
- 35:03lately, but maybe. Oh dude, this is this is beyond

- 36:11for 10% off your order. So you wanted to talk about
- 36:14martyrs? Yeah, I was thinking on the way
- 36:17here. I would be great to discuss
- 36:18martyrs, but I wanted to hear about Sing the Hours and just
- 36:21talk to my brother. Let's just use that as the
- 36:24segue. So we're talking about these
- 36:25monks who pray down the road. We might be cutting that out so.
- 36:29But OK, well, monks pray literally the hours and they're
- 36:31kind of martyrs. The reason why they wear black
- 36:33or white or whatever, Like a priest wearing black, he's dead.
- 36:38Dead to the world. That's one of the traditional
- 36:40ways of talking. Why?
- 36:41Why do priests walk around wearing?
- 36:42Black this is what I was thinking.
- 36:44So we're talking two days before this event that I'm going to,
- 36:49and I was kind of, oh gosh, I've been proud to prep this talk and
- 36:52I praying and thinking about it. And they martyrs, you and I have
- 36:57been talking about the martyrs and what it takes to be a
- 36:59martyr, to die for God and for his truth and for his people.
- 37:07And you, you read the stories of the martyrs, Christian martyrs,
- 37:11and they're very grisly, very intense.
- 37:16And you kind of try to imagine yourself having the courage,
- 37:20quite frankly, to do that. And you're like, oh, you know,
- 37:25how, how, how can I have any shred of that courage?
- 37:28And maybe some people feel confidence in a moment, like I
- 37:31think I got this in the moment, but who knows how you'll deal
- 37:33with it, the pressure when it comes.
- 37:36And you said something really interesting because we were
- 37:38talking about this a lot the last few days.
- 37:40You said something really interesting about how you
- 37:43believe that singing the Psalms prepares one for martyrdom.
- 37:50Oh yeah, totally. I mean, that's why Christ relied
- 37:53on the Psalms on the cross. But he's saying, oh God, my God,
- 37:57why? Like you're training you're.
- 37:58Psyche into your hands I command my spirit.
- 38:01Yeah, it's a powerful idea and it's true, I think, in order to
- 38:08not be freaked out by martyrdom, or even death for that matter.
- 38:11Death is something we put out of our minds.
- 38:12But if people really think about it, it is scary.
- 38:16It's universally scary. There's some people who say that
- 38:18they're not scared of death though.
- 38:20They're wrong. You think they are?
- 38:22If there was suddenly a flash flood and they were in a car,
- 38:25they get scared. They wouldn't be serene.
- 38:27Those same people, I wouldn't be serene.
- 38:30There are. I have met some people though
- 38:31that I think that it's almost like they don't care what
- 38:33happens to them after they die. It's a kind of almost like a
- 38:35form of despair in my opinion. It's an ontological suicide.
- 38:38Yeah, it's like, and that's I guess behind some suicides
- 38:42anyways, but like there's just like, oh, nothing happens, kill
- 38:45me now, it's not a big deal. And that's, I mean, that sounds
- 38:49pretty hellish. Yeah, so there is that.
- 38:51I think that's a fair amount of moderns.
- 38:53Today, I wouldn't have ever, like, felt the visceral horror
- 38:58of like, what would life be like without my child before I have
- 39:02my child, you know? And now that I see my baby every
- 39:05day and I'm frankly kind of addicted to her, like looking at
- 39:09me and me looking at her. Like this had a new baby.
- 39:11Yeah, and our babies are? Like 4 months, yeah.
- 39:13And I'm like, I'm low key day by day, just falling in love with
- 39:17this creature. And now I think if I lost her
- 39:21for whatever reason, it would be the end of all things.
- 39:24And that is, that's an interesting thing that these
- 39:27people, it's, it's easy to forfeit your love for life if
- 39:36you have never relished in true experience of beauty, true
- 39:41experience of goodness. Like if, if your life is devoid
- 39:45of purpose, if somebody says like, I don't care what happens,
- 39:49what happens to me when they die, it's probably because they
- 39:51don't care what's happening in their life right now.
- 39:54Well, I think it's because they haven't really experienced love.
- 39:57They haven't really experienced being loved and having that and
- 40:02they haven't really loved. And so it's easy for them to
- 40:05peace out because what's holding them here?
- 40:09And and then sadly even peace out in the afterlife because
- 40:13it's like what's holding me there?
- 40:15No, there's no one there. It's a black chasm.
- 40:16So there's no love there. There's no love.
- 40:18There's nobody to love in this worldview.
- 40:21And then? You know, unfortunately, like
- 40:23God doesn't force anyone to go love him in heaven forever.
- 40:25Like if you want to go to hell effectively and not be with God
- 40:28forever, God will respect your choice.
- 40:30Yeah, this is the it's kind of the desert island phenomenon
- 40:35where people who Tom Hanks is on the desert island and he thinks
- 40:40his life worth living. A lot of people in terms
- 40:45castaway, a lot of people in terms of how their lived
- 40:47experience of daily life. It's so siloed, atomized,
- 40:50granularized apart from real authentic human relationship and
- 40:55community. And when you think about death,
- 40:57this is this is the punchline here.
- 41:00It's it's partially about singing, you're right, singing
- 41:02the Psalms, but also approaching martyrdom.
- 41:06It's not that the Christian thinks, how can I get to a place
- 41:10where I could be martyred. It's that the Christian in a in
- 41:15Christendom, in most times of human history, thinks instead,
- 41:20how can we outdo ourselves next year in celebrating this grisly
- 41:23murder that happened? Far from thinking, how do we
- 41:27make sense of this? Our buddy Teddy just got his
- 41:31eyes plucked out. Next year they're going to take
- 41:33his eyeballs that were plucked out, put him on a plate, and
- 41:37process with them around the town in joyful, jubilant,
- 41:40glorious. And then they're going to take a
- 41:42fingernail of his and put it in a Catholic altar 200 miles away
- 41:45to make a Church of Saint Teddy. Yeah, and I think some people
- 41:47are just like the modern sensibility is so.
- 41:51I mean, when you even think about the fact that in most of
- 41:53our churches, at least Catholic churches and Orthodox churches,
- 41:57Jesus Christ is there on a crucifix almost completely naked
- 42:03in total. Brutalized.
- 42:05Completely brutalized and they even tone it down.
- 42:07But I mean nails in his hands and his feet.
- 42:09You know, I was just go at church with my little boys and
- 42:12there is Jesus nails in his seat.
- 42:13They're touching the nail. I mean it's just a grisly image
- 42:16like this is a man who's in the form of complete humiliation and
- 42:20torture and it's in every church in the world.
- 42:23I mean, in one sense you can understand if someone came out
- 42:25from like an alien from outer space and it's like, I'm going
- 42:27to go check out a Catholic Church today and they walk in
- 42:30and like holy, like, who are these people?
- 42:32Why are they putting the poor guy?
- 42:34And what kind of savagery is this that they're worshipping?
- 42:37They're they worshipping savagery, you know?
- 42:41And I think even most Catholics are undereducated on like how is
- 42:45an altar consecrated? Did you know that every altar
- 42:48virtually in existence has first class relics in it?
- 42:52They build into the marble or wood or whatever.
- 42:55Acrylics of a St. and sometimes a martyr.
- 42:56Every single church must be built with the bones, with the
- 43:00actual bones of a guy who was or a woman who was brutally
- 43:04murdered. It's usually martyrs, but it's
- 43:05also other Saints. And like in the old church, it
- 43:07was just martyrs. So we used to say, hey dude,
- 43:10Teddy made it. He survived to the end.
- 43:13Let's take little pieces of his body, put it in altars and we're
- 43:17just going to be celebrating his victory till the day we die.
- 43:20And like, it's in that context with processions and songs and
- 43:24hymns of praise and like a cohesive it's, it's like far
- 43:31from being afraid of death. That's the sort of Christendom
- 43:34that inspires new Martyrs, but in a good way.
- 43:37What's different from this? And maybe like, this is purely
- 43:40about inspiring people to be willing to make the ultimate
- 43:43sacrifice for love. And part of that is.
- 43:47Well, that's why Jesus is on the cross and the church.
- 43:49It's for love. It's.
- 43:50Not it's not for self. Right.
- 43:52It's not, it's not. It's not like self harm or self.
- 43:54Flagration or he just gave a lot of grisly details, like the
- 43:56altar things. Is is shocking.
- 43:58That's shocking to a lot of people, but it's not because
- 44:00it's a death cult or you're obsessed with death.
- 44:02It's because precisely through Jesus Christ, life has overcome
- 44:06death. He has overcome death.
- 44:08And so like our body parts in the altar or whatever, as you're
- 44:11describing, it's like we know there's a resurrection of the
- 44:13dead. We know that there's eternal
- 44:15life, there's an eternal Kingdom.
- 44:17We know that he can welcome us into his Kingdom because he has
- 44:19purchased us through He has purchased our salvation.
- 44:22We know all of these things. And so there's this incredible
- 44:25joy and relief and almost like laughter at death because of
- 44:29that. And the.
- 44:30Martyrs, so many of them, we were talking about this the
- 44:32other day. They're going to their death.
- 44:34All these historical accounts, many of them went through their
- 44:37went to their death singing literally like we're talking
- 44:42about literature of the hours sing the hours they go to their
- 44:44death, many of them praising God, the name of Jesus on their
- 44:47lips and singing. When you think about some of
- 44:50these horrific ways that some of these people were killed and the
- 44:53fact that some of them went to death singing to like horrific
- 44:57torture, how certainly it was a grace from God that they had
- 45:02that disposition. How do we have the disposition?
- 45:08Well, you got to be I. How do we, how do we in our
- 45:11daily lives, develop the faith, the hope, the love to be even
- 45:16prepared 1 little bit for that kind of adulation of God in a
- 45:22moment of extreme suffering and fear, potential fear?
- 45:26I don't know. So there's a lot of parables
- 45:28that address this. Sorry, maybe before we go to
- 45:30that, we should share an example of this.
- 45:32I'll just share the one that I was reading about recently.
- 45:34It's very, very heavy. Should I share it?
- 45:36St. Margaret.
- 45:37OK, I had, oh, a friend of mine, We were texting about this today
- 45:42and I was asking this friend. I'll just share.
- 45:44I was asking this friend because I'm preparing this speech about
- 45:47martyrs and I'm doing this research, and I was asking his
- 45:50friend about mothers because I'm a mother.
- 45:52And I, you know, as you know, on the show, I talk about this and
- 45:54trying to figure out how to be a good mother and all this stuff
- 45:56and be the best mother I can be for my kids.
- 45:59And what about mothers who are doing maybe some risky things in
- 46:03their ministry or their evangelization or their pasta,
- 46:06whatever. And what about the kids being at
- 46:08some kind of a risk or whatever, right?
- 46:10And I think about there's this family called the Oma family,
- 46:13Uma family, Oma family, a Polish family.
- 46:15During World War 2, they hid Jews on the family farm, this
- 46:20little Polish family with like 7 kids, little kids, and they hid
- 46:23Jews. And the German police found out
- 46:27and they were snitched on. The German police came and lined
- 46:29them all up and shot them to death.
- 46:31And the Ulma family, when they chose to hide Jews, they knew
- 46:34that this could mean death for them and potentially their
- 46:37children, like horrible things, but they still did it because
- 46:40they loved people. And so they're considered
- 46:42martyrs by the Catholic Church. They're considered martyrs.
- 46:45The one I was reading about today, I'm going to pull this
- 46:48up. I sent this on a joint text.
- 46:51Heard wrong. So I was like, holy Minoli, this
- 46:53is so. This is so convicting.
- 46:57Her name is Saint Margaret of Clithero.
- 47:00She was a mother of three people.
- 47:03This is a poem you sent about her by Gerard Manley Hopkins.
- 47:07Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote a poem about Saint Margaret of
- 47:11Clitheroe, but I'm not going to read that poem, although it's
- 47:15very beautiful. I want to just read a little bit
- 47:18about the events of her life. Do you?
- 47:19Do you remember them, Paul? Do I?
- 47:20Do I? Do you have this memorized?
- 47:22You're so you're so smart. You're so smart.
- 47:24You want. To talk.
- 47:25She was crushed to death. She was hiding priests.
- 47:27She was hiding priests from the Brits, from the Brits, You know,
- 47:30the the British people. This was in the year the 16th
- 47:34century, right? Yeah, 16th century.
- 47:36They there was so much refinement, supposedly, and so
- 47:39many rules of decorum and decor or decorum and behavior, I
- 47:43should say. But the brutal tortures they
- 47:46subjected, their political and religious enemies, too, are
- 47:50unheard of. But what she did is she hid.
- 47:53She hid priests and she was a mother of three.
- 47:56She was like 29 years old, this woman married to a wealthy
- 47:59butcher in town, you know, passionately in love with Jesus.
- 48:02She had these priests who were being lined up to be executed.
- 48:05They caught her. Someone snitched on her.
- 48:07They caught her. They told her basically that
- 48:10they were going to get her kids and the, and the and the
- 48:12servants in her home to testify against her if she didn't.
- 48:17I don't remember the exact like judicial proceedings.
- 48:19Do you know, I'm not, I'm not saying this part correctly, but
- 48:22bottom, bottom bottom line is she didn't, she chose this
- 48:27heinous form of being executed instead of subjecting the people
- 48:31in her house to further scrutiny, which could have
- 48:33included torture. So she did this to protect her
- 48:35children, her servants, and to protect the priest that she had
- 48:38been trying to safeguard for years.
- 48:40And they literally crushed her to death underneath her own
- 48:44physical door. They took the door off of her
- 48:46home and put a sharp rock under her neck, stripped her naked and
- 48:50crushed her to death. I mean, like, you even think
- 48:52about that. It's just like, what, what did I
- 48:54just hear? It's so dark.
- 48:55It's so heavy. And but as she was being killed,
- 48:58she was saying, Jesus, Lord, have mercy on me.
- 49:01Have mercy on me. And then before she was killed,
- 49:04she says, the sheriff's have said that I'm going to die this
- 49:07coming Friday. And I feel the weakness of my
- 49:09flesh, which is troubled at this news.
- 49:11But my spirit rejoices greatly. For the love of God, pray for me
- 49:14and ask all good people to do likewise.
- 49:17Thomas Moore had his Psalter his.
- 49:20Breviary in the Tower of London prayed the Psalms till the end.
- 49:27Paul Miki chanted the tadam from the Liturgy of the Hours on a
- 49:31600 mile death March from Kyoto to Nagasaki, where he and like
- 49:3530 other Japanese Christians were crucified and brutalized.
- 49:39And when he was on the cross, he was just trying to preach, to
- 49:43convince people that to accept the mercy of God.
- 49:46He just was like full of zeal to the end.
- 49:49But you get there from the work of the historians say that in
- 49:52the 600 mile death March, he chanted the tadam the whole
- 49:55time, much to the annoyance of the guards.
- 49:58They joyfully and the tadam is very exultant.
- 50:08Here we go, she said. God be thanked, I am not worthy
- 50:14of so good a death as this. I die for the love of my Lord
- 50:20Jesus. Yeah, but what does she mean
- 50:26worthy of so great a death as. This What does that mean?
- 50:31She talking about Christ's death on the cross.
- 50:34She's not worthy enough to be crucified.
- 50:35What is she talking about there? What does that mean?
- 50:39That she gets to go? That she believed.
- 50:41That being martyred for Jesus, she means she gets to go
- 50:44straight into the arms of Jesus upon death.
- 50:46God be thanked that I am not worthy for that.
- 50:48I am that I am that I am. She says I am not.
- 50:53Worthy of. This death, she's saying I'm not
- 50:56worthy. I'm not worthy of SO.
- 50:58Good. A death as this.
- 51:00She's so grateful for the death and even the instrument of
- 51:03torture. That's like what she's saying
- 51:04there. I mean, yeah.
- 51:10We've got to wrap this show so. Let's well, OK, so some
- 51:13practicals if. You have a door in your house.
- 51:17I'm just kidding. So some practicals sing the
- 51:21hours. Practicals listen to Sing the
- 51:25Hours or download a breviary or buy a breviary or subscribe to
- 51:29the Is it bad for me to start Pimp?
- 51:31You can go. You do it projecting OK.
- 51:34You're fine, but I. Think back to the the martyrs
- 51:37stuff. Is fidelity in the little things
- 51:40right? It's like, oh, I want the the
- 51:41strength to be a martyr. One day we'll give the strength
- 51:44to be kind to your family and to do the dishes.
- 51:49Read your Bible like, like do the little things.
- 51:52Like and Jesus himself says, be faithful in the little things
- 51:56and that's where we practice. That's like our little mini boot
- 51:59camps every day to be prepared for the moment when the Lord may
- 52:02give us the opportunity to do even more for Him.
- 52:05As a final note, I used to be very.
- 52:07Afraid of eternity my teenage years, I remember having a few
- 52:12like just couple days even of terror like how could I even
- 52:17live forever? Wouldn't I just be like on a
- 52:20runaway train towards exhaustion and you can never escape?
- 52:23Even if I was seeing God, even if I'm in heaven, wouldn't I get
- 52:26like tedious? How could you live forever?
- 52:30The the thing that I realized is just like I used to be afraid of
- 52:36bench pressing. I never thought, wow, I could
- 52:39bench 202 plates like right away.
- 52:42But after 140 days straight of going to the gym in my early
- 52:4520s, I got to two plates like you can get And in heaven.
- 52:51Revelation describes how we will sing the praises of God forever.
- 52:56In the last few years, especially with singing so much,
- 52:59I've gotten to a very strange point where and I've talked to a
- 53:04lot of people who sing the hours where they have a similar
- 53:08experience in the in at the monastery today, I wished it was
- 53:13longer. It was daytime prayer.
- 53:16It was about 8 minutes and I thought, man, if only like Lord,
- 53:19don't let me go down the mountain.
- 53:21I just want to don't remember. Peter said, why don't we stay
- 53:23here forever When Christ showed his heavenly glory, He's like,
- 53:25let's just let's just build some tents, stay here forever.
- 53:29Let's not go down and you get to the point where it is so clearly
- 53:33an experience of heaven. And when you do it, you get that
- 53:38grace on earth to do it in the song of the literature of the
- 53:41hours, it actually has created a great desire for heaven.
- 53:44And I think that that is another aspect in which it does prepare
- 53:47you for martyrdom. Because all I want to do is sing
- 53:50to my Lord in the with the veil torn back.
- 53:54It's all I want to do. And that's, that's real talk.
- 53:58And the more I do it, the more I want it.
- 54:01And I never would have imagined. I'm telling you.
- 54:03I started off being terrified of the idea.
- 54:05When I read Revelation, I was like, what are we just going to
- 54:07do? Like sing?
- 54:08And just like it's going to be exhausting.
- 54:10But no one last question. It's a real deal.
- 54:13It's. So beautiful Paul, how is
- 54:15martyrdom different than and the desire for it because you want
- 54:18to go sing forever to our Lord in heaven different from hey, I
- 54:22kind of hope I die today and get in a car crash or something.
- 54:26Oh. Because martyrdom is a
- 54:29participation in Christ's act of love.
- 54:34It's a participation in configuring yourself to Christ
- 54:39in a more perfect way. And so it's a special calling.
- 54:43It's a unique calling. And it would be very, very, I
- 54:48hope that, I mean, I can't say, God willing, that I hope that I
- 54:51will be martyred. But if I were approaching that,
- 54:56and if you were, then hopefully God would give you the grace and
- 54:59you'd have enough nature that that was built on to sustain it.
- 55:03But I mean, the point is that like it is a very, very unique
- 55:07and beautiful sign of Christ. And when you become a, another
- 55:11Christ, then there's a great dignity in that.
- 55:15And it's a great, great privilege.
- 55:17And and the thing that gives me hope is that.
- 55:20Jesus is with you in it, like Saint Stephen, the first martyr.
- 55:23It was like he looked to heaven and then he it's like he fell
- 55:26asleep and they're stoning him to death.
- 55:28Yes, this young Christian man who just was full of love for
- 55:31Jesus and the martyrs, he died. So he like died almost.
- 55:34Like he fell. Asleep, the scripture says.
- 55:36Now again, not all martyrdoms are like that one.
- 55:38The martyrs of Compien were that for.
- 55:41Each other when these nuns look up the martyrs of Compien, the
- 55:43French Revolution, when these nuns were assisting.
- 55:46Each other and praying. Vespers and finishing the chant
- 55:49as their heads hit the pavement. They, I guarantee you, since
- 55:54those nuns, those Carmelites in their rule would have prayed all
- 55:58150 psalms every week with many repeats per day.
- 56:01So they're praying like 300 psalms a week.
- 56:04And when you do that with your sisters, and the reason why they
- 56:07chose that vocation is because they believe this is leaving the
- 56:10world. We're participating in heaven
- 56:12now. We're still on earth in our
- 56:13exile, but we're just going to do the heaven stuff.
- 56:15We're going to sing to God. And so in doing that, as their
- 56:18heads hit the floor and they were being guillotined one by
- 56:20one, they were the heavens opening up for each other.
- 56:24Because for them, just as I've just started to understand, for
- 56:28them participate, participating in the sacred chant of the
- 56:32Psalms passed down, that is heaven.
- 56:36That's what heaven shall be. So they were living heaven.
- 56:41In the in a way, even as they walked to enter Heaven through
- 56:45this grisly death being guillotined, I believe.
- 56:48As we said at the beginning of the conversation, I believe.
- 56:50That all liturgy is a ripping, A partial tear of the veil between
- 56:55heaven and earth. They're they're they're the new
- 56:57Jerusalem meets the old Jerusalem in liturgy in every
- 57:00Tabernacle. That's the new Jerusalem in
- 57:02every Catholic Mass, every Orthodox Divine Liturgy, heaven
- 57:06and earth are are, are, have have met and kissed.
- 57:10And what's really interesting about that idea is that it when
- 57:14you have these stories like the martyrs of Campion and they're
- 57:16doing liturgy as they die, you're getting a crazy
- 57:21singularity, a crazy convergence of that reality.
- 57:24Because they truly are stepping up to the parapet and just
- 57:30already doing the heaven and earth thing and then immediately
- 57:33entering heaven as martyrs. And so it's just like, why
- 57:37aren't there? Weren't there movies made about
- 57:39that? That's the most incredible
- 57:41dramatic moment in the last 200 years, in my opinion, is like
- 57:44something like the Martyrs of Gumby or Maximilian Colby, who
- 57:47just chanted in his cell. And there's some folks making a
- 57:50movie on that right now. Is he going to be singing?
- 57:53I hope those film makers have some reference point because
- 57:55like we said, like he's saying as he died, Yeah, it's true.
- 57:59He. Did he just was like and and
- 58:01they didn't even. They only knew, if memory
- 58:03serves, that he had died because the singing stopped and they
- 58:05came in there and he was just sort of peacefully lying there.
- 58:08But like his last, and you know what?
- 58:10The singing did not stop, he just got his strength.
- 58:15Back in his. Temporary, you know, like I
- 58:20mean, he, he was received into Jesus's arms and he just kept,
- 58:24kept singing. So his death was also like
- 58:27another convergence of this reality where heaven and earth
- 58:31meet and then you step off, you know, so martyrdom might not be
- 58:36very. My hope is if if I can imagine
- 58:39like my death, my hope is that it will be surrounded by enough
- 58:43sung prayer that I also don't notice the passing of the of the
- 58:49shadow. That'd be very special.
- 58:51And I would wish that on anybody.
- 58:53Let's start a ministry where we pray to where we sing it.
- 58:55Sing to people the scripture while they die.
- 58:58Be crazy. We're staying outside of an
- 59:00abortion clinic. Why don't we sing in office for
- 59:03the dead? Yeah, that's very powerful.
- 59:07I don't know if. What?
- 59:08I mean, you can have someone else on the show who's that
- 59:10experience of that. But yeah, we've sung Psalms
- 59:14outside of abortion clinics. I've never done an office in
- 59:15literature. The hours outside of an abortion
- 59:17clinic. Bring Jesus right there.
- 59:20Heaven and earth. Bring heaven, earth and hell
- 59:23right together. What you'd get Dante's Paradiso
- 59:26if you sang the the liturgy outside an abortion clinic.
- 59:30Anyway, we got a rap. Paul, Where can people find?
- 59:36Your work singthehours.org or YouTube?
