- 0:29Speaker 1: thank you for having me. Well, thank you. Where are
- 0:31Speaker 1: you calling from this morning or this afternoon? Sir? I'm
- 0:34Speaker 1: in sunny southern California, rights nearby Los Angeles. Okay, cool,
- 0:40Speaker 1: Well that's the part of the Los Angeles. They can't
- 0:43Speaker 1: get sunny. You're down in the desert. A lot of
- 0:44Speaker 1: people don't know Los Angeles. You're in the desert. My friend,
- 0:49Speaker 1: I lived there for fifteen years. I know about southern,
- 0:52Speaker 1: sunny southern California. But you can look to you to
- 0:55Speaker 1: your right, then you see mountains that are skiing. Just drive,
- 1:00Speaker 1: just dravel a little bit. You get to him. Get
- 1:02Speaker 1: you can go to go to go west and get
- 1:04Speaker 1: to the beach. That's why people love California. It's the
- 1:08Speaker 1: beautiful places. So so you so your native stay for
- 1:12Speaker 1: the weather and complain about Texas. Absolutely, that's stay taxes
- 1:15Speaker 1: for sure. So, uh, let me ask you this. So
- 1:18Speaker 1: are you are you a native? Are you just living
- 1:20Speaker 1: there right now in California? No, I was raised, born
- 1:24Speaker 1: and raised in California. And I've also then my my
- 1:29Speaker 1: wife and I split time between Nevada and California. And
- 1:32Speaker 1: so we we've we just recently had we're about to
- 1:35Speaker 1: have our third child. Congratulations were you know, thank you
- 1:38Speaker 1: very much, and uh, we want to be closer to family,
- 1:41Speaker 1: so we split time. We're mostly based in Nevada, but
- 1:44Speaker 1: right now we're in where I'm originally from, in the
- 1:46Speaker 1: l A area, Right, So Nevada, Las Vegas is one
- 1:51Speaker 1: of my favorite cities. A you areno guy, Las Vegas. Whatever,
- 1:54Speaker 1: Las Vegas, right, you go with another desert. He just
- 1:57Speaker 1: likes deserts, like he just likes desert because the grass
- 2:01Speaker 1: is just killing them out there in Las Vegas for sure.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Now now that now, before we get to oldline degree
- 2:07Speaker 1: dot com. Who are you prior to this? Uh this
- 2:11Speaker 1: this brainstorm that that that that that that came out.
- 2:14Speaker 1: You love college and you was like any other student.
- 2:16Speaker 1: You know, you got a degree, but bore it's some
- 2:20Speaker 1: dead weight knowing you and can I ask you how
- 2:22Speaker 1: much your debt wire you're in at the time when
- 2:24Speaker 1: you left college. Absolutely? And by the way, ra Sean,
- 2:28Speaker 1: I'm embarrassed to begin because when I start talking about myself,
- 2:31Speaker 1: I feel that around you, I've accomplished so little in
- 2:35Speaker 1: my life when I read your biot about everything you
- 2:38Speaker 1: listen to your show that I'm embarrassed to talk about
- 2:41Speaker 1: what I've done before. But I'll give it a crack,
- 2:43Speaker 1: but beleaves. I'll be embarrassed because you because of the
- 2:46Speaker 1: fact that you know what I've accomplished is what you
- 2:48Speaker 1: will accomplish. And when you look back on your life
- 2:51Speaker 1: because of the fact that you're a special human being.
- 2:53Speaker 1: And I try to bring individuals on my show who
- 2:55Speaker 1: are making a difference in people's lives, and that's what
- 2:57Speaker 1: you're accomplishing on a daily basis is a passion job
- 3:00Speaker 1: that you're doing something they're fortunate for you, you can
- 3:03Speaker 1: make money off of, and it also has changed your
- 3:05Speaker 1: life and changes the lots of people every day. So
- 3:08Speaker 1: when you say you have not done a lot, know
- 3:10Speaker 1: that what you are doing is affecting a lot. What
- 3:13Speaker 1: we'll thank you for saying that I really do have
- 3:15Speaker 1: a big dream to make college affordable. And yeah, you know,
- 3:18Speaker 1: I think I took a pretty typical path, you know,
- 3:21Speaker 1: graduate high school, went to a four year university, got
- 3:24Speaker 1: into the workforce, and then only later did I realize that, wow,
- 3:29Speaker 1: I didn't pay off that debt until I was in
- 3:32Speaker 1: my late twenties, and it left a real mark on me.
- 3:37Speaker 1: And I decided, you know, I I was lucky in
- 3:39Speaker 1: that I've exited I've been in startups with my whole career.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I exited two start up companies, and I was I
- 3:45Speaker 1: was around. I got to I really got to sit
- 3:47Speaker 1: and reflect and say, what is the next big mission?
- 3:50Speaker 1: What what do I want to do to make the
- 3:52Speaker 1: world a better place? And to love what I do
- 3:54Speaker 1: every day? And I decided that I want to help
- 3:57Speaker 1: more people get to call it and not have to
- 4:01Speaker 1: deal with all the debt that surrounds us. And with
- 4:06Speaker 1: that being said, now the amount that you're in debt
- 4:08Speaker 1: was how much it was probably upwards let me think
- 4:11Speaker 1: about this now, probably almost se Yeah, that's that's that's
- 4:15Speaker 1: what I hear a lot. You know, I was watching
- 4:17Speaker 1: TV the other day and uh, and and that's that's
- 4:20Speaker 1: a normal that doesn't That doesn't frighten me as far
- 4:23Speaker 1: as when I hear it thrown out there because you're
- 4:25Speaker 1: talking about four year or four year institution and uh,
- 4:29Speaker 1: you know a room and board, the lodging, all that,
- 4:32Speaker 1: you know from start to finish. That's about right. But
- 4:34Speaker 1: at the time when you was every year getting alan
- 4:38Speaker 1: wasn't an issue that when you're going there and you
- 4:39Speaker 1: said it needs amount of money. That's that's the part
- 4:41Speaker 1: that I think that students don't understand. It's easy to
- 4:44Speaker 1: get access to this amount of money to pay for
- 4:47Speaker 1: your education, but you never really told the story of
- 4:50Speaker 1: the payback. Right, Yeah, that's that's the key, because you're right,
- 4:54Speaker 1: you know college in some sense you will get the
- 4:57Speaker 1: loans to pay for it. They don't. It's you're right,
- 5:00Speaker 1: very accessible in that sense. But the key problem is
- 5:03Speaker 1: is that people don't understand until it's too late that wow,
- 5:08Speaker 1: I have to pay this money back at some point
- 5:10Speaker 1: and the interest has been accruing and it is an
- 5:14Speaker 1: incredible sum that can prevent you from buying your first
- 5:17Speaker 1: home or having the flexibility to choose the right job
- 5:21Speaker 1: that you want. You have to make your debt payment
- 5:23Speaker 1: so yeah, it has a it's a it's a huge effect.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Now they're effect that Lisa, I kind of mentioned it
- 5:28Speaker 1: earlier about online degree dot com. What exactly is online
- 5:32Speaker 1: degree dot com. So the way that we decided to
- 5:37Speaker 1: to to solve this problem is we have a platform
- 5:40Speaker 1: where someone can come on, get started in sixty seconds,
- 5:44Speaker 1: register and take as many college level courses as they want.
- 5:48Speaker 1: And that could be that I think where they could
- 5:51Speaker 1: earn credit towards their degree and unlock instant scholarships and
- 5:55Speaker 1: discounts towards universities across the country. And it's completely free.
- 6:01Speaker 1: So really, what we've done is we've created a free,
- 6:04Speaker 1: more accessible, modern alternative to the community college. And then
- 6:09Speaker 1: it's just where it will help everybody take that first
- 6:12Speaker 1: step to go back to higher us. So, you know,
- 6:15Speaker 1: the whole room got quiet over here when you say
- 6:17Speaker 1: it free. Everybody kind of like, you know, stared at me.
- 6:20Speaker 1: But I had to let you finish your life because
- 6:22Speaker 1: you said free. You know, you know how to say
- 6:24Speaker 1: free to free dramatic calls one, two or three. And
- 6:34Speaker 1: because because so, because it's the beauty of it is
- 6:36Speaker 1: that you know, online education has like a skyrocket because
- 6:41Speaker 1: what type on the process. You thought of online education
- 6:44Speaker 1: with the Phoenix University of Phoenix, you know that all
- 6:48Speaker 1: the time University of Phoenix. Now every major University of Michigan,
- 6:52Speaker 1: University Alabama, University of Houston, all schools have an online program.
- 6:57Speaker 1: My daughter, she's a tennis pro in high school as
- 7:00Speaker 1: a prodigy, so she went to the uh University of Miami,
- 7:03Speaker 1: you know, high school UH training. So so when you so,
- 7:07Speaker 1: you're not so you're you're you're getting an audience that's
- 7:10Speaker 1: kind of comfortable, which is type of educational planning. Correct,
- 7:15Speaker 1: you're right. There was this misconception that online only meant
- 7:19Speaker 1: the for profit schools that we've read about the newspapers.
- 7:22Speaker 1: But you're right. The reality is everybody's moving all of
- 7:26Speaker 1: their programs online because there's such a huge demand. Technology
- 7:31Speaker 1: has enabled it, and so that's the future in higher education.
- 7:36Speaker 1: The fastest growing segment is the online education and every
- 7:40Speaker 1: state school, private school, everybody's going in that direction because
- 7:44Speaker 1: it is so convenient for us working adults, who you know,
- 7:48Speaker 1: we don't have time to leave our job to go
- 7:51Speaker 1: to campus every day. We don't. We don't we have
- 7:54Speaker 1: our we've got families, were busy and so it's conducive
- 7:57Speaker 1: to our lifestyle. Okay, great, we're gonna go back, We're
- 7:59Speaker 1: gonna go to a and we're going to talk about more.
- 8:01Speaker 1: And I was just using as an example. We're talking
- 8:03Speaker 1: about online degree dot com the format that will work
- 8:06Speaker 1: for you when we come back and talk to Grant
- 8:08Speaker 1: about their working adult how they can use this format
- 8:11Speaker 1: to their advantage. Again, Money Making Conversations is the world
- 8:14Speaker 1: that allows you to be successful when you listen to learn. Hi,
- 8:18Speaker 1: this is ro Sean McDonald. I'm talking to the founder
- 8:21Speaker 1: of online degree, online degree dot com. Um you graduate
- 8:24Speaker 1: from college with an over them. Wa On made them
- 8:26Speaker 1: out of debt and he was determined to change how
- 8:28Speaker 1: students embark on their college education. So he found it
- 8:31Speaker 1: after many years of everybody you know he did. He
- 8:34Speaker 1: did different jobs, different startups, and then the concept of
- 8:37Speaker 1: online degree dot com. Anyone save with on their college
- 8:42Speaker 1: degree for free. Please welcome back to Money Making Conversations,
- 8:45Speaker 1: my friend Grant Aldrich. Grant, quick question, they're here. What
- 8:51Speaker 1: the students dead? And when you talk about the student
- 8:53Speaker 1: debt in the United States, is that something that can
- 8:56Speaker 1: be resolved because now we see politicians of using it
- 8:59Speaker 1: as part of that campaign. I've heard said, I've heard
- 9:02Speaker 1: some of Bernie Sanders talking about he got he wants
- 9:05Speaker 1: to pay off for everybody's student debt. That's when his
- 9:08Speaker 1: campaign statement and so, which I think is a fantasy
- 9:12Speaker 1: because we're talking about a trillion dollars worth for debt.
- 9:15Speaker 1: So you're you're, You're the real thing, You're the real deal.
- 9:18Speaker 1: You you're you you walk it, you talk it, you
- 9:20Speaker 1: live it online, degree dot com. For a working person
- 9:24Speaker 1: who's trying to change their lives, who got to go
- 9:27Speaker 1: to work at eight hours, got kids at the house,
- 9:29Speaker 1: how did they use your format to change their lives? Yeah,
- 9:34Speaker 1: and you know, to answer your question now, I think
- 9:36Speaker 1: that we're going to hear a lot in this next
- 9:38Speaker 1: election about forgetting student debt. But to your point, it
- 9:42Speaker 1: really is impossible. It's too large and and the current
- 9:44Speaker 1: system is not conducive to forgiving it because school is
- 9:49Speaker 1: getting more expensive, and ultimately, if someone's gonna pay for it,
- 9:53Speaker 1: it's going to be the taxpayer. It's gonna be all
- 9:55Speaker 1: of us. And as we all know, we're it's really
- 9:58Speaker 1: getting hard for us to pay for all these things.
- 10:00Speaker 1: You know, we're going trillions of dollars in the debt
- 10:02Speaker 1: as it is, so I don't think it is feasible
- 10:05Speaker 1: for us to do. I think that we need a
- 10:06Speaker 1: whole new system which which precipitated what we're trying to do.
- 10:10Speaker 1: And so the way we work would be, you know,
- 10:13Speaker 1: again we're a an alternative to going to community college.
- 10:16Speaker 1: So instead you would register on the website and again
- 10:20Speaker 1: get started sixty two. You would then be able to
- 10:23Speaker 1: identify we've got different college level courses. They're all introductory,
- 10:27Speaker 1: really interesting stuff that you could take, you know, intro
- 10:29Speaker 1: to computer science, robotics, history, all these really neat courses
- 10:35Speaker 1: that are all self paced and online. You could take
- 10:37Speaker 1: it to your leisure and as you complete those courses,
- 10:40Speaker 1: we've worked out arrangement with great universities across the country,
- 10:44Speaker 1: big state schools, private schools where they will accept those
- 10:47Speaker 1: courses for credit. So as you start taking these courses,
- 10:51Speaker 1: you're getting closer towards your degree. And then we've even
- 10:55Speaker 1: arranged discounts for our students at these schools where you
- 10:58Speaker 1: can unlock instant scouts ten percent off tuition off tuition,
- 11:03Speaker 1: and when you put all that together, it could be
- 11:05Speaker 1: up to at savings on your degree and help you
- 11:09Speaker 1: finish faster. So that being that was being a big
- 11:13Speaker 1: paradigm ship in trying to lower the cost of school
- 11:17Speaker 1: as opposed to paying for it from the taxpayers. He
- 11:21Speaker 1: is an interesting thing about this. Share some history about
- 11:25Speaker 1: Roshan mcgonuth. I went to community college. I graduated with
- 11:28Speaker 1: a math degree and mine in sociology uh in computer
- 11:32Speaker 1: science from the University Houston. But along the way I
- 11:34Speaker 1: went to community college, I took polic side and so
- 11:38Speaker 1: I know that I didn't at the time that I
- 11:40Speaker 1: went to college, there was no online degree dot com
- 11:42Speaker 1: available to me, and I know that I was working.
- 11:46Speaker 1: So what I like about this, this pitch that you're
- 11:48Speaker 1: talking about, this opportunity I should say you're talking about
- 11:51Speaker 1: is day I would tell people go to college. Although
- 11:54Speaker 1: just going to college will change your life, just educating
- 11:57Speaker 1: yourself beyond high school will change in your life because
- 12:00Speaker 1: it just opens your eyes about the opportunities and also
- 12:04Speaker 1: really allows you to see how talented and what life
- 12:06Speaker 1: has to offer. And when you got an opportunity, well
- 12:09Speaker 1: you know you can't get in the car, go to
- 12:11Speaker 1: a campus, sit down in a behind a chair where
- 12:14Speaker 1: you can put a computer it's your table or in
- 12:17Speaker 1: your bed while you're about to go to sleep, and
- 12:20Speaker 1: you can pursue a higher level of education. That's what
- 12:22Speaker 1: this is all about. This is this interview is about opportunity.
- 12:25Speaker 1: This interview about allowing yourself to say, I'm tired of
- 12:28Speaker 1: the rut. I'm tired of the routine that I am in.
- 12:31Speaker 1: How can I change that? And that's what online degree
- 12:34Speaker 1: dot com can do? Correct Grant, you nailed it, and
- 12:38Speaker 1: it's it's so sad to me that there's so many
- 12:41Speaker 1: people who want to make their lives better. They want
- 12:44Speaker 1: to take that first step, they want to improve their
- 12:47Speaker 1: career or get into a career that they think is
- 12:50Speaker 1: their future. But they're not able to take that first step.
- 12:54Speaker 1: And it's because, just like we've discussed before, they can't
- 12:58Speaker 1: leave work. They don't I can't justify the cost. And
- 13:02Speaker 1: so we're trying to enable it for those people and
- 13:04Speaker 1: make the world a better place, lower students that and
- 13:09Speaker 1: ultimately for society, create a more educated society. Because I
- 13:13Speaker 1: agree with you. I mean, education is one of those
- 13:15Speaker 1: things that has a direct correlation to the benefits of
- 13:18Speaker 1: a culture, and it's a huge deal. So I think
- 13:21Speaker 1: that we're really checking all those boxes. You are. And
- 13:24Speaker 1: I always tell people you can't repull your degree. Once
- 13:27Speaker 1: it gets on that wall. Nobody's gonna report. You know,
- 13:31Speaker 1: you can have bad credit, but you can't. You can
- 13:32Speaker 1: always tell somebody and point to that wall and said, look,
- 13:35Speaker 1: I've accomplished that. And that is what drives me in
- 13:38Speaker 1: my life. You know, as I went through college and
- 13:41Speaker 1: I was dumbling, it took me seven years to give
- 13:42Speaker 1: my degree, so I could have saved a lot of
- 13:44Speaker 1: money with online degree dot com because I was, I
- 13:46Speaker 1: was saving out some cash for seven years. Now, I
- 13:49Speaker 1: wasn't a chief college student grant. I was out there,
- 13:51Speaker 1: I was, I was, I was paying for some people
- 13:53Speaker 1: to go extra, people going to school behind me. But
- 13:56Speaker 1: I thought, you're right, you know. But the thing about
- 13:58Speaker 1: it is that when I look at and I talk
- 14:00Speaker 1: to you about what you're doing, it feels so comfortable
- 14:03Speaker 1: to be the sell is to individual. It feels so
- 14:06Speaker 1: comfortable to tell people that, look, you can change your
- 14:09Speaker 1: life by making this minor adjustment in your schedule. Ultimately,
- 14:14Speaker 1: I think that we need to have that tough love
- 14:16Speaker 1: with so many people who are not taking that step.
- 14:18Speaker 1: And so now you know, there's no more excuses, right.
- 14:21Speaker 1: I understood why people weren't taking that step when you
- 14:25Speaker 1: look at the current cost benefit analysis and process to
- 14:29Speaker 1: get started. But now we proved all the excuses. You know,
- 14:33Speaker 1: it could not be easier or more cost effective now
- 14:36Speaker 1: to take that first step. And the first step is
- 14:39Speaker 1: what sir. Come on, let's go and take it to
- 14:41Speaker 1: the finished line. That first step getting started with registering
- 14:45Speaker 1: for free with online degree dot com. Uh and uh yeah,
- 14:49Speaker 1: that's where of the first step. And you know the
- 14:50Speaker 1: other thing that makes us a big difference. So we're
- 14:52Speaker 1: Shawn back to your experience when you went back to
- 14:54Speaker 1: community when you're in community college to start with, because
- 14:56Speaker 1: that's the path that so many people take. Absolutely of
- 15:00Speaker 1: the things that in addition to you know now that
- 15:03Speaker 1: courses can be online, which makes it more accessible. One
- 15:06Speaker 1: thing you probably remember not getting at that community college
- 15:09Speaker 1: was the support and guidance that you really needed if
- 15:13Speaker 1: they say it's there, but unfortunately they never have enough
- 15:16Speaker 1: resources to help every person to help them craft, figure
- 15:20Speaker 1: things out, provide support. That is another of the key
- 15:24Speaker 1: differences is that we provide that kind of supporting coaching
- 15:27Speaker 1: to help people get to where they need to go
- 15:31Speaker 1: and because ultimately the end of day, these are people,
- 15:33Speaker 1: these are uh, these they need they need that human
- 15:37Speaker 1: touch and that support. You can't just you know, it's
- 15:40Speaker 1: a complicated thing. And that's another key differentia that we
- 15:44Speaker 1: try to provide well. And tell you them about the education.
- 15:46Speaker 1: I'll tell you something about what you're offering because usually, uh,
- 15:51Speaker 1: this the opportunity is being made available to working students, adults, students,
- 15:56Speaker 1: a lot of adults, students who have families, a lot
- 15:59Speaker 1: of probably single parent households, And when you try to
- 16:02Speaker 1: pursue the education outside of the household, it becomes, uh,
- 16:06Speaker 1: it can become very destructive to the overall family environment.
- 16:09Speaker 1: But when you're at your house and your kids or
- 16:12Speaker 1: your kids or your children are seeing you make a
- 16:14Speaker 1: difference in there in your personal life, it also changes
- 16:17Speaker 1: the atmosphere is home. It makes them want to be
- 16:20Speaker 1: better in their school. It makes them Mom's doing better,
- 16:23Speaker 1: Dad's trying to do better, then I will do better.
- 16:25Speaker 1: It will create a culture in your house that can
- 16:27Speaker 1: change the value system when you're within your home on
- 16:30Speaker 1: a daily basis. So when I look and I look
- 16:33Speaker 1: at this and that that's why I was happy. Grant
- 16:35Speaker 1: to have you on my show, because sometimes when us
- 16:37Speaker 1: an individual, you know, you built this. I'm just looking
- 16:39Speaker 1: at the overall social structure of what your program and
- 16:43Speaker 1: your online dot com online degree dot com format offers
- 16:46Speaker 1: to to students, to the middle class, to the lower
- 16:49Speaker 1: middle class, to the structure to structure people who can't
- 16:53Speaker 1: see uh see at the front door because they don't
- 16:55Speaker 1: have time to get out the front door. They barely
- 16:57Speaker 1: try to get in the front door because the back
- 16:59Speaker 1: door is already shut. And so your educational opportunities. I
- 17:03Speaker 1: want to become a friend of yours, man because uh,
- 17:05Speaker 1: because I just see a lot of opportunities for you
- 17:07Speaker 1: to grow what you're trying to do. And I would
- 17:09Speaker 1: do with everything within my power to be able to
- 17:12Speaker 1: help you get the word out, especially in my community.
- 17:15Speaker 1: You know, my community, I feel in any community of
- 17:18Speaker 1: color needs to understand the value of the format that
- 17:21Speaker 1: you're offering, because we are working uh more than eight
- 17:25Speaker 1: hours a day. We are you know, typically on the
- 17:28Speaker 1: low end of the of the of the payroll opportunities.
- 17:31Speaker 1: So so to have you on my show talking about it,
- 17:34Speaker 1: it's really a blessing to me. Hopefully it's a blessing
- 17:37Speaker 1: to my audience to take advantage of what you're doing.
- 17:39Speaker 1: I want to support you in so many levels because
- 17:42Speaker 1: I was that working adult. That's why I had to
- 17:44Speaker 1: go to community college. I had to drop out of
- 17:46Speaker 1: of a four year institution because I couldn't afford it.
- 17:49Speaker 1: I had to go work a four time job. And
- 17:51Speaker 1: when I worked the four chap job, when I left
- 17:53Speaker 1: the four champ job, I had to go to a
- 17:54Speaker 1: community college. And he's saying, he's abolutely right, that was
- 17:57Speaker 1: the most functional environment because it was everybody had that
- 18:01Speaker 1: same hustle. They leave class, break to their cars, go home,
- 18:05Speaker 1: and so you are creating something that I feel is
- 18:08Speaker 1: very positive and very whole to the everyday family lifestyle.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Grant Sean, thank you. Thank you for saying that. You
- 18:16Speaker 1: know you're you're such an accomplished person who I respect greatly,
- 18:19Speaker 1: and your viewpoint on that is is valuable to me
- 18:23Speaker 1: very much. And you know, I think that what you
- 18:25Speaker 1: just said was very profound that people often forget in
- 18:29Speaker 1: that you know, that paper and that degree is not
- 18:32Speaker 1: just the economic benefit which we all know is there.
- 18:36Speaker 1: There's that real cultural raw um everything within that family
- 18:42Speaker 1: which you just touched on that nobody ever talks about.
- 18:45Speaker 1: And that is that's so important in making people feel
- 18:48Speaker 1: better about themselves and driven, and yeah, that's you know.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I'm glad to be part of that. And guess what,
- 18:53Speaker 1: You're part of Money Making Conversations family, my friend, and
- 18:56Speaker 1: you'll be hearing from me soon because I just want
- 18:59Speaker 1: to just help you take it to the next level
- 19:00Speaker 1: and also spread your information worldwide because you are a star,
- 19:04Speaker 1: because you're changing lives on a daily basis, and that's
- 19:06Speaker 1: why I created Money Making Conversations Grant. Welcome to the family,
- 19:09Speaker 1: my friend,
