- 0:32Speaker 1: industry executive entrepreneur and when Amazon announced his newly released
- 0:37Speaker 1: books chart this week, his book on Impact was number one.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Well respected in the entertainment industry, he is a veteran
- 0:46Speaker 1: of the game. I've known him over two decades. The
- 0:48Speaker 1: careers he's worked with in the industry include Jay z Rihanna,
- 0:53Speaker 1: Kanye West, Travis Scott, Future twenty one, Savage, Puture, pew
- 0:58Speaker 1: as p o U g h. I remember I first
- 1:00Speaker 1: made I thought it was pe w Beanie Peuple. I
- 1:02Speaker 1: remember Steve Harper said, how you spell Latin as a
- 1:04Speaker 1: p W. And now then I looked at that is
- 1:07Speaker 1: p o U g h bet P. Well, he's living
- 1:11Speaker 1: indelible mark on the music industry, holding executive roles at Motown,
- 1:15Speaker 1: Death Jam, you know, Epic Records. That's why I made
- 1:19Speaker 1: him at Epic Records, m c A Records, you know,
- 1:21Speaker 1: just chronicling a career and culminated with the ultimate position
- 1:24Speaker 1: for him at that time president of Rock Nation Music
- 1:28Speaker 1: in twenty four teen, a dramatic accident and the current
- 1:30Speaker 1: in Bennie's life. I'm bringing him on the show for
- 1:33Speaker 1: that reason and it is chronicle in his book on Impact.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Without further ado, let's listen to the man himself tell
- 1:39Speaker 1: his story and why we should understand that when it
- 1:42Speaker 1: seems dark, there's always light. Welcome to Money Making Conversations
- 1:46Speaker 1: Master Class, Bannie People. Yes, sir, yes, sir, yes, sir. Listen.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Let me say this to you, Umshan and I'm listening
- 1:56Speaker 1: to you and I was like, wow, who is that right?
- 1:59Speaker 1: And then while listening to you and watching looking at
- 2:02Speaker 1: the back wall in in your studio and I'm like,
- 2:05Speaker 1: it almost feels like one of the mega churches, you know,
- 2:08Speaker 1: like people you know like you buy your break. The
- 2:12Speaker 1: next time I ever come on your show, bro, I'm
- 2:15Speaker 1: gonna be on that wall because that wall can go
- 2:18Speaker 1: over the interviews all day. You want the oil because
- 2:22Speaker 1: the wall is the truth, Bro. The wall is what's
- 2:24Speaker 1: gonna last for happens that wall. Man. And I appreciate
- 2:28Speaker 1: you for bringing me on here. Man, Thank you so
- 2:30Speaker 1: much for your friendship. Thank you so much for your time. Man,
- 2:33Speaker 1: and I appreciate it. Well, you know the thing, you know,
- 2:35Speaker 1: celebrating five years and money Making Conversation masterclass this month,
- 2:39Speaker 1: and so I felt it was just fantastic to bring
- 2:42Speaker 1: on you a long time for end. You and I
- 2:44Speaker 1: met Steve Harveying. I was doing local radio the Beat
- 2:48Speaker 1: in Los Angeles and you and the idea about by
- 2:51Speaker 1: the record, uh collaboration where we bring in a bunch
- 2:55Speaker 1: of artists, new artists and oh, you know, a star
- 2:58Speaker 1: artists and collaboration and that's how we met. And we've
- 3:03Speaker 1: been friends. We've been uh dinner, dinner, buddies, lunch buddies,
- 3:09Speaker 1: breakfast buddy, laugh, all that stuff all these years. But
- 3:13Speaker 1: that's been the key to you being you understood the
- 3:16Speaker 1: value of relationships. Wow, you know it's interesting that you
- 3:22Speaker 1: that that we're gonna revisit that story, because I mean,
- 3:25Speaker 1: you guys invited me in your lives. I was the
- 3:28Speaker 1: guy who was just a local promoter and Los Angeles
- 3:32Speaker 1: UH senior vice president. But you know, I always saw
- 3:35Speaker 1: myself as a worker, and I remember when you brought
- 3:38Speaker 1: me in and it was like, only introduce you to Steve,
- 3:41Speaker 1: and we got this idea. We got this concept right on.
- 3:45Speaker 1: You know, rap music was different, you know, it was
- 3:48Speaker 1: actually starting to morph into what it is now, and
- 3:51Speaker 1: you guys wanted a positive message in the marketplace and
- 3:56Speaker 1: in doing so, that's how we got to the compilation
- 3:58Speaker 1: which was super exciting and also pennetrated the market. And
- 4:03Speaker 1: you know it was an entree for both of both
- 4:05Speaker 1: of us want me being aligned with superstar manager and
- 4:09Speaker 1: superstar artists as well as you guys connecting into a
- 4:13Speaker 1: whole another audience and music. So what the shows is
- 4:16Speaker 1: when you foster and people see something in you that
- 4:20Speaker 1: you may not see in yourself, or you see something
- 4:22Speaker 1: in yourself that someone needs identified that it's all about
- 4:26Speaker 1: patients and perseverance, absolutely, And the thing about it is
- 4:29Speaker 1: when I met you, you know, I always tell people
- 4:33Speaker 1: you know it was. It was a very interesting time
- 4:35Speaker 1: in my life. I just transitioned from being a sitcom writer.
- 4:38Speaker 1: I was doing the Parkers and then January Fox and
- 4:41Speaker 1: Sister Sister and and Steve and I was on radio
- 4:44Speaker 1: in l A. We came in the number and eight
- 4:47Speaker 1: team when we walked in that building, and in six
- 4:50Speaker 1: months we was number one, and so we like owned
- 4:52Speaker 1: l A. We were like the face of l A.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Music wise. It was a couple of young guys. Man,
- 4:57Speaker 1: there was just kind of like wilding out because we
- 4:59Speaker 1: didn't know why we were number one. We just went
- 5:01Speaker 1: gut instinct. And our relationship with you was tied to
- 5:04Speaker 1: gut instinct because you had that same fire, Benny, that
- 5:08Speaker 1: same man you with Steve Harp. And now when we
- 5:11Speaker 1: were walking away from you, man, go that've been in
- 5:13Speaker 1: that been in something, because your energy, that laugh man,
- 5:16Speaker 1: and you were like you truly were like you said,
- 5:20Speaker 1: you know and this is a compliment, you know the
- 5:23Speaker 1: used car salesman, because used called smellsman can say you
- 5:26Speaker 1: a call and it might not be the call. You're
- 5:28Speaker 1: about to drive off that lot. And Benny would sit
- 5:31Speaker 1: down man and talk to you, and you go, it's
- 5:34Speaker 1: been but they don't have no will. Don't worry about that.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Don't worry about that. Later. Yeah, you ain't a call.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Will You came here for a car? Bills come later.
- 5:47Speaker 1: See know what I'm saying, Come here for a car
- 5:52Speaker 1: with wills. You gave me for a car. I got it.
- 5:55Speaker 1: We're gonna get your wills. You, We're gonna get you wills. Man,
- 6:02Speaker 1: we leave him, Man, we'd be driving laughing so hard, man,
- 6:06Speaker 1: because we go Benny Man, Betty something else Man and
- 6:09Speaker 1: Betty going to room with your white folks and started
- 6:12Speaker 1: talking and if he's listening, and we just just we
- 6:14Speaker 1: re quiet as little church bouts because Benny knew what
- 6:20Speaker 1: he was doing. Is he still knows what he's doing
- 6:22Speaker 1: to day. And then you know, you started transitioning like
- 6:25Speaker 1: we started transition. Start looking for other opportunities. What made
- 6:29Speaker 1: you look at and said I was bigger than where
- 6:32Speaker 1: I was at, And then start challenging yourself to really
- 6:35Speaker 1: start reaching what God talents that God gave you. So
- 6:40Speaker 1: first and foremost entering into the music business, I realized
- 6:43Speaker 1: there were no salt and pepper hair black man walking
- 6:45Speaker 1: in the buildings. So that's when I decided on two
- 6:49Speaker 1: Plan aid's and my first Plan A was this corporate job,
- 6:53Speaker 1: which which actually played paid exponentially, but knowing that this
- 6:57Speaker 1: would not be my retirement because it was no one
- 7:01Speaker 1: in their mid fifties late sixties, so it wasn't gonna
- 7:04Speaker 1: be like my mother at the Post Off getting a
- 7:06Speaker 1: golden package. So that's when I invested in real estate.
- 7:09Speaker 1: So every bonus I made for the last twenty years
- 7:12Speaker 1: twenty five years went to purchasing a piece of property,
- 7:15Speaker 1: whether it was a single family, whether it was a
- 7:17Speaker 1: condo or co op, you know, a residential building or
- 7:21Speaker 1: even a city block. That's what I said was going
- 7:24Speaker 1: to be important for me being blessed in an opportunity
- 7:27Speaker 1: to um, you know, um make make make the living
- 7:32Speaker 1: that I was that that I was doing the time.
- 7:35Speaker 1: And so as we go through the process. But you
- 7:38Speaker 1: you know you you you engaged in superstar talent. You know,
- 7:41Speaker 1: you know we we we you know, the industry is
- 7:44Speaker 1: different now, you know, because STUDIOST had the relationship when
- 7:47Speaker 1: we were back and we met, had the relationship with
- 7:50Speaker 1: the talent. Now they got streaming and they could drop
- 7:52Speaker 1: their own music and all this, so it's a it's
- 7:55Speaker 1: kind of like a more independent world out that I
- 7:58Speaker 1: don't really know how Lizzo is really successful or how
- 8:02Speaker 1: meg the Statue is successful. A chance to wrap us
- 8:04Speaker 1: successful or tank it successful because there are different ways
- 8:08Speaker 1: for them to just say I gotta social media platform,
- 8:10Speaker 1: I can drop my own thing. It's just like with Beyonce,
- 8:13Speaker 1: it's usually gonna drop our music at midnight. Same thing
- 8:16Speaker 1: with Taylor Swift. I'm gonna drop my music at midnight.
- 8:18Speaker 1: They ain't got they I have to ask nobody if
- 8:21Speaker 1: they want to drop their music. How has that impacted
- 8:24Speaker 1: how you look at the industry because now you're looking
- 8:26Speaker 1: at it from a perspective as an entrepreneur and not
- 8:28Speaker 1: somebody who's employed by it. Well, I mean, in in
- 8:32Speaker 1: all seriousness, um, there are there are two ways to
- 8:37Speaker 1: look at it. They are independent artists who are truly independent.
- 8:40Speaker 1: That means you own your masters and you can go
- 8:43Speaker 1: to a just show kid you can go to you
- 8:46Speaker 1: can upload it yourself right or you can go through
- 8:48Speaker 1: one of the distribution companies and put it up. When
- 8:51Speaker 1: you actually going to a deal with a label, you
- 8:55Speaker 1: just can't do what you want to do because they
- 8:58Speaker 1: actually own in control. You know, your your your your
- 9:02Speaker 1: Master's so being in the space and that's always existed,
- 9:07Speaker 1: be quite honest with you know, we're old enough to
- 9:09Speaker 1: be to know about one stops and you know distributions
- 9:14Speaker 1: UM as well as major corporations. And the one defining
- 9:17Speaker 1: factor is the majors have always been in the position
- 9:21Speaker 1: of power for artists that come through that funnel. And
- 9:24Speaker 1: that works for you and against you, right, and there's
- 9:26Speaker 1: nothing wrong. If you're an artist that can strive and
- 9:29Speaker 1: make it independently and don't need a major, that's great.
- 9:32Speaker 1: But there's a lot of benefits of being in a
- 9:34Speaker 1: major because guess what they can take you from zero
- 9:37Speaker 1: to sixty or zero to ninety if if if the
- 9:40Speaker 1: thrust of the building goes behind you, which you might
- 9:43Speaker 1: not be able to do over yourself in a in
- 9:45Speaker 1: a in a in a runway that you know it
- 9:49Speaker 1: is best for exploitation. So we're talking to benef you. UM.
- 9:53Speaker 1: This book on Impact is number one on Amazon and
- 9:56Speaker 1: will main there as long as you keep buying it.
- 9:58Speaker 1: That's why he's on the show to day we to
- 10:00Speaker 1: talk about this book, talking about his croup, but we're
- 10:02Speaker 1: really here to sale books. I wouldn't be here if
- 10:04Speaker 1: that book wasn't number one, bro. As much as you
- 10:06Speaker 1: love me, you like yo Benny if he was number forty.
- 10:09Speaker 1: You know, it's hard to climb up with a backpack.
- 10:14Speaker 1: It's really heavy, okay, but when you you could climb down.
- 10:17Speaker 1: You know when that when that backpacks life. You know
- 10:19Speaker 1: what I'm saying, Everybody, ate up the food. Let's go
- 10:22Speaker 1: back down to get some both food. But when you're
- 10:25Speaker 1: climbing up, brother, and that backpack full of rocks on
- 10:30Speaker 1: Impact ain't got no rocks in it because it's number one,
- 10:35Speaker 1: number one, you know, And that's what really when when
- 10:39Speaker 1: you talk about the energy of success and the energy
- 10:42Speaker 1: of what we're trying to do. You know, I read here,
- 10:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna read this, uh this uh quote by you
- 10:49Speaker 1: and I both know her. Over my seven decades, I
- 10:52Speaker 1: have read two many books that even guess the number
- 10:56Speaker 1: most honestly meant on Impact has impacted my life and
- 11:00Speaker 1: such of my sensibilities like none other in a very
- 11:04Speaker 1: very long time. Truly a road max, Truly a road
- 11:07Speaker 1: map to fulfilling one's potential while at the same time
- 11:11Speaker 1: guiding others to achieve the same. The one and only
- 11:14Speaker 1: Cathy Hughes, founder and chair person when I was working
- 11:19Speaker 1: for a radio one Na's called Urban one, which is
- 11:22Speaker 1: TV one Radio one, Urban one Digital platforms. Kathi Hughes,
- 11:29Speaker 1: she has been a face of radio and music. When
- 11:32Speaker 1: you went to her, I'm assuming there was no hesitation
- 11:35Speaker 1: to get her to give you a quote. Why I
- 11:38Speaker 1: was cool? Man, let me say this, I was extremely nervous.
- 11:44Speaker 1: I mean, we we know miss Hughes, all of us
- 11:48Speaker 1: and we've we've been blessed by it, but we don't
- 11:50Speaker 1: really some of us, let's say this is just the
- 11:53Speaker 1: people in our generation and younger don't know what she's
- 11:57Speaker 1: meant to people of color, black people and women like
- 12:01Speaker 1: she was the first woman to have a company on
- 12:04Speaker 1: woman and woman of color and asked that, right, So
- 12:08Speaker 1: that's just huge in in the money game, right, like
- 12:11Speaker 1: showing who and what her influence was. And she's an
- 12:15Speaker 1: avid reader and she's also just like you know, a
- 12:19Speaker 1: dynamo in business. So as a friend and just like
- 12:23Speaker 1: you and I appreciate you bringing me here. You know,
- 12:25Speaker 1: I'm not want to to ask folks to help me.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I want to bring tee it up for them to
- 12:31Speaker 1: want to be engaged, right, because you don't never want
- 12:34Speaker 1: to be that person. You know that's begging, right, you
- 12:36Speaker 1: know it perceived to be so when I when I
- 12:39Speaker 1: went to her, I didn't bring it to her until
- 12:41Speaker 1: I had it in its best state, in its best form.
- 12:44Speaker 1: And of course, just like what you said, she said, absolutely,
- 12:48Speaker 1: I'll give you a quote. Absolutely, I'll give you a
- 12:50Speaker 1: quote for the book. Send it over. Because she would
- 12:53Speaker 1: have gave me the quote anyway, right, but I wouldn't
- 12:57Speaker 1: have accepted the quote. Has she not read the book?
- 13:00Speaker 1: And when she read the book and we spoke, she said, Benny,
- 13:04Speaker 1: this is phenomenal. I read it three times and this
- 13:09Speaker 1: was in like two days. Bro, I ain't read the
- 13:11Speaker 1: book three times and two days right, right, Like I've
- 13:18Speaker 1: never read the book three times and two right, just
- 13:21Speaker 1: says the power of her mind, right, And then I
- 13:24Speaker 1: knew I had something. Right. You know what when when
- 13:28Speaker 1: people of of of of that level, that value, and
- 13:33Speaker 1: had that intuition and have seen the past, the president
- 13:37Speaker 1: of the future is telling me that I have something.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Then I realized, like, Okay, this is everything I wanted
- 13:43Speaker 1: to be impactful to people. We'll be right back with
- 13:46Speaker 1: more money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald Now let's
- 13:54Speaker 1: return to Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashan McDonald. I'm
- 13:59Speaker 1: talking to any Pew, the one and only Bene Pew,
- 14:02Speaker 1: former record executive entrepreneur, the number one book on Amazon
- 14:06Speaker 1: available right now just go to Amazon called Own Impact.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I have a six questions I want to ask you.
- 14:12Speaker 1: This is an entrepreneur show. I bring individuals like you
- 14:15Speaker 1: on here to just seed information into my fan base.
- 14:18Speaker 1: And the first one is the key to building mentor relationships.
- 14:22Speaker 1: I talked about that a lot. You shown me it works,
- 14:26Speaker 1: You shown me the value of it. Can you give
- 14:28Speaker 1: us my audience some keys or just a couple of
- 14:31Speaker 1: a statement of the building mental relationships? So you know,
- 14:36Speaker 1: I actually talk about that in the book as well.
- 14:38Speaker 1: So for me, mentoring as a mentor, you have to
- 14:42Speaker 1: realize that you're in the position of giving right and
- 14:46Speaker 1: you may not get anything back other than that person
- 14:49Speaker 1: getting the best from you. So for me, it's all
- 14:51Speaker 1: about from the mental perspective giving as a mentee. You
- 14:55Speaker 1: need to realize the value of what people who are
- 14:57Speaker 1: on the other end of doing. They're giving you your time,
- 15:00Speaker 1: so don't waste it right. And also that's because you know,
- 15:04Speaker 1: like I said, I always tell people, like when I
- 15:06Speaker 1: stepped away from Steve, it was the mentor and the relationship.
- 15:09Speaker 1: It's two words that are key, mentor and relationships. The
- 15:14Speaker 1: relationship can be equally as more powerful as the mentorship,
- 15:18Speaker 1: and so the membership. Let you know that as you
- 15:20Speaker 1: grow older, you're seeing people who can come back and
- 15:23Speaker 1: be an asset to you, not just not that you're
- 15:25Speaker 1: trying to be self and say, hey, I ain't gonna
- 15:27Speaker 1: look here. I'm doing this for you, not don't forget me.
- 15:29Speaker 1: That's not what we're talking about. We're talking about because
- 15:33Speaker 1: I because I was. I remember I was. I was.
- 15:35Speaker 1: I was talking to Sherriff Shephard yesterday. In fact, I
- 15:37Speaker 1: was a new Yard and she was and were she
- 15:40Speaker 1: had me come on the show. We're sitting in the
- 15:41Speaker 1: addressing room shiphip. She's ash. I remember when I was
- 15:45Speaker 1: on the show and you and I was selling you.
- 15:47Speaker 1: I was selling my book, and you was telling me
- 15:50Speaker 1: repeat the name, keep repeating the name, keep repeating the name.
- 15:53Speaker 1: And I didn't know why you kept saying. They said, look,
- 15:56Speaker 1: because you never know when somebody's gonna start listening to
- 15:58Speaker 1: this interview. That moment stayed with her stay because you
- 16:02Speaker 1: reminded me in the dressing room. And I get that
- 16:04Speaker 1: a lot from people. I've gotten that from Gabriel Union.
- 16:07Speaker 1: I've gotten that from Lal Anthony. I've gotten that from
- 16:09Speaker 1: Nick Cannon. I've gotten that from Michelle Williams. I've gotten
- 16:12Speaker 1: that and it's not so so. Your mentorship can just
- 16:15Speaker 1: be advice that people hang on to and it shapes
- 16:20Speaker 1: a decision they may make in that life that proves
- 16:22Speaker 1: to be important. And that's what it really is. When
- 16:26Speaker 1: you're talking about a lot of people tag mentionship. I
- 16:29Speaker 1: gotta be there holding somebody's hand. I gotta be there
- 16:32Speaker 1: pick him up out to school. I gotta be there
- 16:33Speaker 1: to open their books and club mentorship and just conversation
- 16:37Speaker 1: on this conversation that you can have with somebody when
- 16:40Speaker 1: they come to you, and not blowing them off with
- 16:43Speaker 1: some cavalier statement or a statement that that you don't.
- 16:46Speaker 1: You should need to be restarting to always tell people
- 16:49Speaker 1: you go if you're a doctor, you don't go to
- 16:51Speaker 1: a mechanic for advice. Now, if the mechanics started telling
- 16:53Speaker 1: you about how to be a doctor, then you need
- 16:56Speaker 1: to walk away and realize that he's lying. I don't
- 17:01Speaker 1: care if he's your daddy. Oh y'all, he's a mechanic. Okay,
- 17:06Speaker 1: So let's talk about you know, it's just me in
- 17:08Speaker 1: the words of social media, and you're not developed our
- 17:10Speaker 1: relationship with for social media. Interview the value of personal
- 17:14Speaker 1: branding all day every day, man, like, you know, I
- 17:18Speaker 1: am who I am because I work at it. I realized,
- 17:22Speaker 1: you know, my shortcomings. I realize, um the my area
- 17:26Speaker 1: of growth. I realized what my gifts are, and I
- 17:29Speaker 1: make sure that I tap in and ask people questions.
- 17:32Speaker 1: You know, what do you think? Like? You know, you
- 17:34Speaker 1: and I have candid conversations every time we went together.
- 17:36Speaker 1: It's greatly Even after this interview, I'm gonna say, Sean,
- 17:39Speaker 1: what can I do better? Because there's gonna be another
- 17:42Speaker 1: Rushan that's gonna come in my life for the rest
- 17:45Speaker 1: of my life. So I don't want to just think,
- 17:47Speaker 1: you know, and have people around me that go, hey, man,
- 17:50Speaker 1: now you did a great job, and then when you leave,
- 17:52Speaker 1: they go, you know, he's, oh, my god, horrible and
- 17:56Speaker 1: he can't speak right. So truth is so important and
- 18:00Speaker 1: surrounding yourself with people who can actually give you what
- 18:03Speaker 1: you need, that's gonna help you as you evolved and
- 18:06Speaker 1: become the person you need to be. We know when
- 18:08Speaker 1: when you early in this conversation, you were talking about investing,
- 18:12Speaker 1: and that's a visionary approach to any You know, I
- 18:15Speaker 1: always tell people, you know, President Obama, you know, he
- 18:19Speaker 1: had to do things in his life as a young
- 18:21Speaker 1: person to make sure it didn't come back on him.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Otherwise people have never been president never. You know, that
- 18:27Speaker 1: means he had he had a vision. And the fact
- 18:30Speaker 1: that you just said, every shod every time I got
- 18:31Speaker 1: a bonus, I invested in property, I invested in the building,
- 18:34Speaker 1: in invested in the car or a house. Where did
- 18:37Speaker 1: that come from? My mother? We grew up in a
- 18:40Speaker 1: five family house and we were in the We lived
- 18:42Speaker 1: in the attic and um in the winner it was
- 18:45Speaker 1: really cold and then the summer was really hot because
- 18:48Speaker 1: it was no installation. So my father, um, you know,
- 18:51Speaker 1: I always say to him, he's the black mcgo because
- 18:54Speaker 1: he could fix and do any and everything. So he
- 18:57Speaker 1: worked around the house and he gave the woman was
- 19:00Speaker 1: an older woman from Kansas. Um he uh did all
- 19:04Speaker 1: the work for free for her. So he did all
- 19:07Speaker 1: the electrically, did all the plumbing, and he did all
- 19:10Speaker 1: the grass because you know, back then, it was just
- 19:13Speaker 1: a different way on how people moved right. You know,
- 19:16Speaker 1: it's that barter kind of thing. You know. The rent
- 19:19Speaker 1: never went up, but he did all the work, right,
- 19:21Speaker 1: It's just how it was. And there's a lot of unstated,
- 19:24Speaker 1: unsaid things that were valuable in relationships. So when she
- 19:27Speaker 1: decided to move back to Kansas and they didn't have
- 19:30Speaker 1: the money, she told them, hey, listen, you can. I
- 19:33Speaker 1: want you to have this house. So I'm gonna hold
- 19:36Speaker 1: the paper since she hold it out cash and holding
- 19:38Speaker 1: the paper is she was the bank, so she could
- 19:41Speaker 1: do as she chose to. So she allowed them to
- 19:44Speaker 1: purchase the house. And and that's what changed the line
- 19:48Speaker 1: of my life because I was able to see my
- 19:50Speaker 1: father um lived the life that he wanted to him
- 19:53Speaker 1: and my mother in their relationship. She worked at the
- 19:55Speaker 1: post office so I benefit health insurance was covered, and
- 19:58Speaker 1: my father was able to be the man and as
- 20:01Speaker 1: strong man as he was living his life fixing cars,
- 20:05Speaker 1: fixing homes. You know, just like yo, man, I'm free.
- 20:09Speaker 1: You know what honest stage worked for our honest stage pay.
- 20:12Speaker 1: I mean the grit said he used to make for
- 20:14Speaker 1: us and eggs in the morning was nasty, but more
- 20:17Speaker 1: importantly he was when that helped us. So if you
- 20:21Speaker 1: find a little levity in this interview with Bitty p
- 20:25Speaker 1: as p o U g h uh, he was. He
- 20:29Speaker 1: did stand up comment in his life. You know, he
- 20:31Speaker 1: stand there, he's on stage when the more time executive
- 20:34Speaker 1: spotted him, he was on stage. He didn't he didn't
- 20:37Speaker 1: send to the level of Chris Rock, Martlard's or Erojean
- 20:43Speaker 1: mcdonalause I did damn comment. Damn. By the way, thank
- 20:45Speaker 1: you very much, TVC. You always you always just yo,
- 20:48Speaker 1: you always brother. See how you do you know like
- 20:52Speaker 1: you you started good? You like yo by the way
- 20:54Speaker 1: we started on camera. How you just be jabbing at
- 21:00Speaker 1: like breaks on your show so you can buy. I
- 21:06Speaker 1: just threw out those you not me. I just thought
- 21:10Speaker 1: those big names, you know, and then I did Deaf
- 21:13Speaker 1: jam Me and Dave Japelle and all that stuff, you know,
- 21:16Speaker 1: back in ninety two and things like that. But I
- 21:19Speaker 1: bring that up because yeah, yeah and so and so
- 21:23Speaker 1: the and Beyonce brought it on stage with uh Kelly
- 21:26Speaker 1: rolling with good people and way back in Michelle Williams
- 21:30Speaker 1: came later on way back in ninety two with my
- 21:33Speaker 1: boy Matthew Knows back in Houston, Texas. And so my
- 21:38Speaker 1: life is that's my life, but the life of being
- 21:40Speaker 1: able to work with amazing talent like Travis Scott future
- 21:45Speaker 1: we arena, Who's going to be the Super Bowl halftime
- 21:48Speaker 1: show for three? You know? Man, Okay, I'm gonna tell
- 21:55Speaker 1: you this. You know, I've been in the I've been
- 21:57Speaker 1: in these rooms. These rooms can just suck all the air.
- 22:00Speaker 1: They could suck all the air when they walk in
- 22:02Speaker 1: the room. But you also have to maintain who you
- 22:06Speaker 1: are an identity, and you've always been able to do that, Benny,
- 22:09Speaker 1: without intimidating the star. How were you able to pull
- 22:13Speaker 1: that off? Man, I'm gonna take it back to you
- 22:15Speaker 1: know what, and that's why we have to you. I mean,
- 22:18Speaker 1: you guys actually did this. You know, you guys used
- 22:21Speaker 1: to have the mentoring session with Steve Um and that
- 22:25Speaker 1: was very powerful because kids need a blueprint. You know.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Obviously you're gonna learn what you learn, how you learn it,
- 22:31Speaker 1: when you learn it, and what stage in your life.
- 22:33Speaker 1: But for me, it was my mom and like you know,
- 22:35Speaker 1: our spirituality, like my mother had us in church. Man,
- 22:38Speaker 1: we hate it going to church. We was those kids, right,
- 22:41Speaker 1: and me and my sister was talking not even just
- 22:43Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago. You know about our mom
- 22:46Speaker 1: um God you know, um, God bless God, bless her. Um.
- 22:51Speaker 1: But uh, you know, she raised me as a little man,
- 22:54Speaker 1: like I never really was a child. I was five
- 22:58Speaker 1: year I was a little man. So you know, she
- 23:00Speaker 1: taught me about economics. Um, she taught me about your words,
- 23:04Speaker 1: she taught me about the discipline, She talked me about
- 23:06Speaker 1: foundation so now, and she taught me about spirituality so
- 23:11Speaker 1: or God. Spirituality is that loose term. We believed in
- 23:14Speaker 1: jaw God, in Jesus Christ. Right. So, Um, when I
- 23:18Speaker 1: got into music, I never let go my fundamentals to
- 23:22Speaker 1: subscribe in the situation that I was in. You know, ultimately,
- 23:26Speaker 1: the reason why I last thirty years is because I
- 23:29Speaker 1: didn't rush the process. You know, I didn't get invited
- 23:32Speaker 1: to every party. I didn't get invited on every boat.
- 23:34Speaker 1: I didn't go to every event. But you know what
- 23:36Speaker 1: people knew when they came and they sat with me,
- 23:39Speaker 1: They need what I said because I was rooted in
- 23:43Speaker 1: what I was rooted in the truth. So therefore, you
- 23:46Speaker 1: know what they felt comfortable. People recognize, you know, like
- 23:49Speaker 1: they say game recognized games, we all recognized real So ultimately,
- 23:54Speaker 1: at the end of all of those conversations, cats knew
- 23:56Speaker 1: I was gonna be like, Hey, can I get your number?
- 23:59Speaker 1: You know? You know, can I come over? Um? You know,
- 24:03Speaker 1: you know, what's your little brother doing? What's his number?
- 24:05Speaker 1: You know? All of that stuff is about the business.
- 24:08Speaker 1: So I always kept it business. And then they had
- 24:11Speaker 1: the opportunity whether they wanted to invite me in their life.
- 24:14Speaker 1: I was never about trying to be in their life
- 24:17Speaker 1: doing business. Well, he wants to invite you into his
- 24:20Speaker 1: life with a book called on Impact. Understand the value
- 24:24Speaker 1: he brings to the table. When I throw out these names,
- 24:27Speaker 1: and I don't casually throw them out. You know him,
- 24:30Speaker 1: jay Z, you know her? Rihanna, you know him? Kanye West,
- 24:34Speaker 1: do you know him? Travis Scott, Future Tune one, Savage.
- 24:39Speaker 1: These names are important in our interestry and they become iconic.
- 24:43Speaker 1: The things that bennyp has done behind the scenes are iconic.
- 24:47Speaker 1: That's why it's important. If you want to pick up
- 24:49Speaker 1: a great read. It's not number one on Amazon by accident.
- 24:52Speaker 1: It's number one on Amazon because it's a necessary read.
- 24:55Speaker 1: It's a necessary motivational tool. It's a necessary book that
- 24:58Speaker 1: would enable you to change your life because we all
- 25:01Speaker 1: have dark sides in our life and that dark side
- 25:03Speaker 1: is turned by unknown, and unknown should never stop you
- 25:07Speaker 1: from reaching your dreams being a peer. As we close
- 25:09Speaker 1: this interview, the reason you work. You wrote on Impact
- 25:13Speaker 1: was why I wasn't a near death car accident and
- 25:18Speaker 1: hit a treated ninety miles as a passenger. I sustained
- 25:21Speaker 1: the level two concussion L three l for a vertebrate fracture,
- 25:24Speaker 1: bulging disc in my back, lacerated liver which led me
- 25:27Speaker 1: to lose half my blood supply, and we have to
- 25:30Speaker 1: treat so hard that is severed two feet of my
- 25:34Speaker 1: small intestine. And in that moment, God put a book
- 25:37Speaker 1: inside me called on Impact. An impact is an acronym
- 25:40Speaker 1: that stands for intuition, masterly, pivot, authenticity, connection, and teamwork.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Those are the pillars of my life. And at the
- 25:47Speaker 1: end of each chapter, I put together a hit list
- 25:50Speaker 1: of takeaways from from the chapter that people can subscribe to.
- 25:55Speaker 1: And at the end of the day, I feel that
- 25:57Speaker 1: I can meet every morning where they're at because you know,
- 26:00Speaker 1: I've gone from intern to CEO so I feel that
- 26:02Speaker 1: I'm the person that you can relate to and also
- 26:06Speaker 1: guess what you can learn from just because I've been
- 26:09Speaker 1: where you are, my man, bet people, thank you for
- 26:12Speaker 1: coming on Money Making Conversation master Class. Let's keep this
- 26:14Speaker 1: book number one. Okay, let's Stewart brother. I love it
- 26:18Speaker 1: and talk to you soon. All right, We'll be right
- 26:21Speaker 1: back with more Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald.
- 26:27Speaker 1: You are now tuned into the Money Making Conversations Minute
- 26:31Speaker 1: of Inspiration with Rashan McDonald. Hi, I'm Rashan McDonald for
- 26:35Speaker 1: Money Making Conversation Masterclass teacher Daily Minute of Inspiration. Recently,
- 26:39Speaker 1: I spoke with one of the hosts of HDTVs Marriage
- 26:41Speaker 1: Real Estate, Egypt Sharad. She explains to fulfillment that comes
- 26:45Speaker 1: with being ourselves in black media. Questions come up even
- 26:49Speaker 1: in advisory if you know what I mean? You know what?
- 26:51Speaker 1: Do we need to change anything to appeal to the masses?
- 26:54Speaker 1: For us the blessing in this entire experience, as no
- 26:57Speaker 1: one has asked us to change a thing like I
- 27:00Speaker 1: was on the Today Show this morning. In Dreadlocks, I
- 27:03Speaker 1: shot a commercial for the Intercontinental Exchange RICE Stock Market
- 27:08Speaker 1: and no one asked me to tone down anything on
- 27:12Speaker 1: our show. That's very much who we are and our
- 27:14Speaker 1: network h G TV loves it just as you are.
- 27:20Speaker 1: If you want to listen to this, full interview with
- 27:22Speaker 1: Egypt Gerard is available on money Making Conversations dot com.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Now let's return to Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashan McDonald.
- 27:32Speaker 1: My guest today is LaToya Luckett. She broke in the
- 27:34Speaker 1: industry and saying, you know, I gotta go back on
- 27:36Speaker 1: this because you know, we got a little history, my
- 27:39Speaker 1: history with her, you know, backing with the iconic girl
- 27:42Speaker 1: group that's the child. But I love her for acting.
- 27:45Speaker 1: LaToya previously recurring on one of my favorite shows, Owns
- 27:48Speaker 1: green Leaf for three seasons. Love this show. She's also
- 27:51Speaker 1: a period in recurring roles in Fox Rosewood and HBO's Ballers,
- 27:55Speaker 1: another two of my favorite shows. And start with my
- 27:57Speaker 1: bar Morris Chestnut, Okay over there and rose Wood and
- 28:01Speaker 1: now LaToya luck at Stars as Ken your peers in
- 28:05Speaker 1: the newer season of Power Book three, Raising Canaan Aaron
- 28:08Speaker 1: Sunday at nine pm Eastern on Stars Plus. I want
- 28:11Speaker 1: to get into it with her new YouTube channel show,
- 28:14Speaker 1: which I love to death. Leave it to LaToya please
- 28:16Speaker 1: working to Money Making Conversations master Class, the one in
- 28:19Speaker 1: the owned LaToya Lucky. How you doing, I'm good? How
- 28:22Speaker 1: are you first to get to you had a lot
- 28:25Speaker 1: to say, which is good? Which is good? You know
- 28:29Speaker 1: what I'm saying, because that means you've had a career,
- 28:30Speaker 1: which means that this because when we talk about this business,
- 28:35Speaker 1: you know, and I'm a fan of your YouTube channel
- 28:38Speaker 1: because it tells I think if anybody in the industry
- 28:42Speaker 1: wants to know, how does industry work? Because there's no
- 28:45Speaker 1: guarantees in this industry and you are an entrepreneur. A
- 28:48Speaker 1: lot of people don't know when you become an actor,
- 28:50Speaker 1: you basically an entrepreneur because yourself employed. You're going from
- 28:52Speaker 1: gig gig people they walk in a room audition, and
- 28:56Speaker 1: you don't know if they like you. You You know, you
- 28:58Speaker 1: might have killed They said, you know, we want to
- 29:00Speaker 1: go with this skinny chick. You know, we want to
- 29:02Speaker 1: go with the light of complexion. We want to go
- 29:05Speaker 1: with the gel with the long hair, the straight hair,
- 29:07Speaker 1: we want to go to go with the silly laugh.
- 29:09Speaker 1: But what about Latoria? She killed it? Man. I think
- 29:12Speaker 1: I wannach good chick good, but I'd like to do
- 29:15Speaker 1: with it. How do you how do you deal with
- 29:18Speaker 1: that level of challenges because it's every day and the
- 29:23Speaker 1: world we live in, but you've been able to rise
- 29:25Speaker 1: above it and build a successful career. I mean, I mean,
- 29:30Speaker 1: I can honestly tell you I, as a matter of fact,
- 29:32Speaker 1: I just came off of the audition of tests and
- 29:35Speaker 1: if you're an actor, you know what the test is. UM.
- 29:38Speaker 1: I was so excited about the role and I just
- 29:41Speaker 1: as a matter of fact, I was trying out for
- 29:42Speaker 1: two roles because I felt like, Okay, I think they
- 29:45Speaker 1: really want me to be a part of this because
- 29:47Speaker 1: they got me auditioning for two roles and you know,
- 29:50Speaker 1: test deal is done, it is done, And then you
- 29:52Speaker 1: get the news it didn't go your way, and like wait,
- 29:55Speaker 1: what did I do? What did you know? And you
- 29:57Speaker 1: just you start to realize the old saying everybody gonna
- 30:02Speaker 1: say it was for you? As for you, um, And
- 30:07Speaker 1: as much I want to believe that, you know, you
- 30:11Speaker 1: still have those moments of disappointment where it's like, but
- 30:15Speaker 1: I felt like this was this was mine right? You know,
- 30:20Speaker 1: he would go with the tection again. I have to
- 30:23Speaker 1: get through that but you know what comes with it,
- 30:25Speaker 1: you know, you know, you know, like in football, you're
- 30:29Speaker 1: gonna get hit right right right. I think that, Um,
- 30:34Speaker 1: you know once once the sting goes away, Uh, you
- 30:39Speaker 1: just keep going. You just keep going up and you
- 30:42Speaker 1: keep going. It is it the people around you, your
- 30:46Speaker 1: support group that has enabled you to sustain the career.
- 30:49Speaker 1: And when I've talked like this, I'm not talking in
- 30:50Speaker 1: the negative manner. Just young man has had a brilliant
- 30:53Speaker 1: career and it will continue to have a brilliant career.
- 30:56Speaker 1: But I was just telling that everybody who wants to
- 30:58Speaker 1: jump out there and being an actor or sing girl,
- 31:00Speaker 1: it's not easy, baby, And you do need a tribe,
- 31:03Speaker 1: and you need a whole tribe of folks to believe
- 31:05Speaker 1: in you and will continue to continue to encourage you
- 31:08Speaker 1: and lift you up when you feel down, and you know,
- 31:10Speaker 1: push you back in the room when you want when
- 31:12Speaker 1: you're done, when you're kicking and screaming. Um. It is
- 31:17Speaker 1: not something that's easy. That's something that you can I
- 31:22Speaker 1: just think it's gonna be easy money, it's not. Um.
- 31:27Speaker 1: So you know, if the passion is there, if the
- 31:32Speaker 1: um work, your work ethic, if it's there, and to
- 31:39Speaker 1: be resilient, you have to you have to have all that. Absolutely,
- 31:45Speaker 1: a good group of folks talk some sense and to
- 31:48Speaker 1: you when you're ready done with it. Um. But it's
- 31:52Speaker 1: not easy at all, but it's reporting. The payoff is beautiful,
- 31:57Speaker 1: beautiful beauty when life is interesting. Because, like I said,
- 32:02Speaker 1: my all my degrees in mathematics minor and sociology left
- 32:05Speaker 1: IBM pursuing the crowd thought are gonna be the next set?
- 32:08Speaker 1: And Murphy definitely the next Richard Prior and I made
- 32:10Speaker 1: great headway into the comedic industry as a stand up comedian,
- 32:14Speaker 1: and I too was in l A doing my thing,
- 32:16Speaker 1: and I decided to move back to Houston to say,
- 32:18Speaker 1: you know something, I'm going to be the big fish
- 32:21Speaker 1: in the small palm as used and Uh. I opened
- 32:24Speaker 1: a comedy club called the Hip Hop Comedy Stop. And
- 32:26Speaker 1: it was hot. I mean people were lines around the block.
- 32:29Speaker 1: It was hot, it was pop. And that's when I
- 32:31Speaker 1: had the first time. Because Matthew knows that they ran
- 32:35Speaker 1: into me at the hotels. I got this new singing
- 32:36Speaker 1: group they I said, okay, he said, can they come
- 32:41Speaker 1: open to your spot? And that's when I had the
- 32:42Speaker 1: first pleasure of meeting this talent of the young lady
- 32:46Speaker 1: and her friends on that stage, and even then, you know,
- 32:50Speaker 1: the politeness and the innocence of being young. There was
- 32:53Speaker 1: a unique talent about you that still out there that
- 32:57Speaker 1: that resonates today. But you came into the industry the
- 33:00Speaker 1: toy as a singer when in your mind you felt
- 33:03Speaker 1: I could do more. Um, you know what, I feel
- 33:06Speaker 1: like that was a God moment because I remember being
- 33:14Speaker 1: asked to come and meet with an agency in New York. Um.
- 33:17Speaker 1: I hadn't really done any acting outside of school plays
- 33:19Speaker 1: and and they asked me, you know, to uh come
- 33:23Speaker 1: down and take a meeting. They sent me on my pcation.
- 33:25Speaker 1: I went, I didn't know how to read script I've
- 33:28Speaker 1: been on the stage play, but stage plays are very
- 33:30Speaker 1: different from on screen. Yeah, and so I especially scripted,
- 33:37Speaker 1: and so you know, I just I just said yes,
- 33:41Speaker 1: I jumped and when I offered me to do that thing,
- 33:46Speaker 1: I did it. And I ended up being cast as
- 33:51Speaker 1: the lead in this movie called Preacher's Kid. And that
- 33:53Speaker 1: was my first act. So God says lead when he says, go,
- 33:58Speaker 1: Baby go, And that was that was the MTV. That
- 34:01Speaker 1: was MTV E T and a few other things, because
- 34:06Speaker 1: I whole Vidcom family, you know. But you know, the
- 34:10Speaker 1: thing about it is that one of the interesting things
- 34:12Speaker 1: of me wanting to get you on the show, not
- 34:15Speaker 1: only just to promote your role on this hot new
- 34:17Speaker 1: series on Stars and Stars, has created this little power universe,
- 34:22Speaker 1: like you know, the Marvel Universe and the d C
- 34:24Speaker 1: Universe or you have the Power Universe, and now you're
- 34:28Speaker 1: part of that power universe. You you know, different than this,
- 34:31Speaker 1: you know than the you know, Black Widow. You know,
- 34:33Speaker 1: you want of these characters now that they brought into
- 34:35Speaker 1: that family, and to know that you're in this power
- 34:39Speaker 1: universe that has a certain cashade to it, doesn't it?
- 34:44Speaker 1: I think it does. Um. I mean, first of all,
- 34:46Speaker 1: I'm a huge fan of the show, even before some
- 34:49Speaker 1: part of Raising Kane, and I was like, oh my god,
- 34:52Speaker 1: the body of work, the cast what it was a
- 34:56Speaker 1: little stating um the first season and going okay, how
- 35:00Speaker 1: where do I fit even even what your body worked
- 35:04Speaker 1: now you can say casually because you gotta you gotta
- 35:07Speaker 1: resume now as an actress, Okay, but even still watching,
- 35:12Speaker 1: you know, watching them in these roles, I was just
- 35:16Speaker 1: kind of like, Wow, this is outstanding work. And it
- 35:22Speaker 1: was a period piece of UM, which is my favorite
- 35:27Speaker 1: favorite era. Come in and buckle down and give everything
- 35:33Speaker 1: that I had at the time to this character. And
- 35:36Speaker 1: because she has such a complex story to tell, I
- 35:39Speaker 1: felt like her story was one that people would in
- 35:43Speaker 1: some ways be able to relate to be quick to judge,
- 35:46Speaker 1: um and also UM that you know, I was having
- 35:52Speaker 1: a trouble with seeing why she made the decisions that
- 35:55Speaker 1: she made, especially as a mother too, and her being
- 35:58Speaker 1: a mom that abandoned her daughter right. And one of
- 36:01Speaker 1: the it was the singer wanted to pursue a singing career,
- 36:03Speaker 1: you know, I mean for singing career, you know, a
- 36:08Speaker 1: lot of levels, but on more, you know, on on
- 36:12Speaker 1: other levels, we just didn't get it. Um. But I
- 36:16Speaker 1: just I still felt like even with all of that,
- 36:20Speaker 1: her story deserved to be told in a very special
- 36:23Speaker 1: way and amongst beautiful a beautiful cast. UM. So being
- 36:29Speaker 1: a part of the Power universe is some something that
- 36:33Speaker 1: I can say I am truly proud of and excited about. Well,
- 36:36Speaker 1: when they gave you a character that has a lot
- 36:38Speaker 1: of levels, you said that you know, you know, and
- 36:41Speaker 1: then let me just explain to everybody about when you
- 36:44Speaker 1: see a lot of levels. Okay, the character abandoned its child, Okay,
- 36:48Speaker 1: abandons child. That right there, you hear the word selfish. Okay, selfish.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Then the character comes back into the city, ignores the child,
- 36:59Speaker 1: then cares a life of a religious flavor, as they say,
- 37:06Speaker 1: found God, but not flavor. I would say flavor because
- 37:09Speaker 1: you know what I'm gonna say, flavor Latoria because of
- 37:11Speaker 1: the fact that we know your past. So I don't
- 37:15Speaker 1: think you can find God without about acknowledging what you've done.
- 37:21Speaker 1: But that's the that's the layers of your character, which
- 37:23Speaker 1: I love. And so because you know and then knowing
- 37:26Speaker 1: who you are from Houston, Texas, southern here going up
- 37:30Speaker 1: to New York and get that accent right, talk to
- 37:33Speaker 1: us about that if that was that was one thing
- 37:37Speaker 1: that I struggle that I had this um coach and
- 37:41Speaker 1: um he was very with me, and I was like,
- 37:46Speaker 1: this is such a big piece of her. I cannot um,
- 37:52Speaker 1: I cannot allow that to be swept under the rug.
- 37:56Speaker 1: This has to be this has to be great, you know,
- 38:02Speaker 1: distract distraction from her character. And so they were like, no, no,
- 38:07Speaker 1: what is suddenly you're a come from now, don't you know?
- 38:12Speaker 1: I'm so glad um that I was able to nail
- 38:15Speaker 1: that down a bit and also made it fun. You know,
- 38:18Speaker 1: it also made it fun. We'll be right back with
- 38:20Speaker 1: more Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. Now, let's
- 38:28Speaker 1: return to Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashan McDonald. What
- 38:33Speaker 1: the thing about is, uh, you have to use your authenticity,
- 38:38Speaker 1: you know. And one thing about New Yorkers don't don't
- 38:41Speaker 1: play with don't play with them folks up there, Okay,
- 38:44Speaker 1: don't play don't don't you start getting on them Burrows,
- 38:47Speaker 1: the Brooklyn queens and Bronks and and you acting like
- 38:50Speaker 1: you you're talking with a half of accent or non accent.
- 38:54Speaker 1: They will strike you down the place to play with
- 38:58Speaker 1: anything Like if if I was, you know, in New
- 39:02Speaker 1: York could come in to play a Southerner, we might
- 39:04Speaker 1: give a little growths that, you know, we're just a
- 39:06Speaker 1: little warmer down here, right right right. But I do
- 39:10Speaker 1: going into this that I had to get that particular
- 39:13Speaker 1: accent right. They didn't. They trold you. They will trolly.
- 39:19Speaker 1: I lived in New York twice, so I know exactly
- 39:21Speaker 1: how hard they would have trolled you. I'm talking to
- 39:23Speaker 1: LaToya luck At, the star of so many series of
- 39:26Speaker 1: incredible singer launched your career many years ago back in
- 39:29Speaker 1: the city of Houston, Texas. I was fortunate to be
- 39:31Speaker 1: there to see her in the early stages of greatness
- 39:34Speaker 1: and then watch her over the years. And it's the
- 39:36Speaker 1: first time I'm interviewing that. So I feel like, you know,
- 39:38Speaker 1: everything's life is like that. It gives you a chance
- 39:40Speaker 1: to see people and then to say congratulations because when
- 39:44Speaker 1: you have a career that she has has succeeded, because
- 39:48Speaker 1: you know, everybody want to be some form of you.
- 39:51Speaker 1: And that's why I started the conversation about the the
- 39:54Speaker 1: the You can get these one off, you might start
- 39:57Speaker 1: one series, you might get this five and under, you
- 40:00Speaker 1: might get this commercial, but you have a career, Dolata. People,
- 40:07Speaker 1: when I say that, you know, who do you think
- 40:10Speaker 1: the most? Who do I think the most? Oh man,
- 40:16Speaker 1: there's so many people to think. I would first say
- 40:18Speaker 1: thanks to God. Period um he I mean, I've been
- 40:24Speaker 1: showing out when I tell you, showing up enough blows
- 40:28Speaker 1: my mind consistently every day my mom for her to
- 40:35Speaker 1: be a woman of faith and to have the courage
- 40:38Speaker 1: to almost get out of the way in a low
- 40:42Speaker 1: and get out of the way, and not put her
- 40:44Speaker 1: beliefs or what she thought I should be, and just
- 40:50Speaker 1: allow me to be young age. I've started to pursue
- 40:54Speaker 1: my career at twelve. I left home at you know,
- 40:57Speaker 1: to to pursue my career and traveling on the road
- 41:01Speaker 1: with des shall at well. So, Um, that takes a
- 41:06Speaker 1: very that's a that's a different kind of faith. Um.
- 41:11Speaker 1: So I'm so grateful to her. The tribe that God
- 41:14Speaker 1: has put around me of wonderful people who are of
- 41:17Speaker 1: my heart, who on a daily literally lift me up
- 41:21Speaker 1: in prayer, send an encouraging word. Um, I am so blessed.
- 41:29Speaker 1: But these phenomenal people around me, who I mean, stay
- 41:34Speaker 1: on me and for just beautiful experiences that God has
- 41:39Speaker 1: allowed me to have, um good and bad, um which
- 41:44Speaker 1: all ended up working for my good. Oh yeah, She's
- 41:49Speaker 1: starting in the Power Book three raising Kanan Aaron Sunday's
- 41:52Speaker 1: at nine pm Eastern Standard Time. Not only that, but
- 41:56Speaker 1: she's also starring in her own production of honesty, a
- 42:01Speaker 1: motivation of of lifting information called Leave It to LaToya.
- 42:07Speaker 1: It's a YouTube series got roughly by the hundred and
- 42:10Speaker 1: twenty six thousand subscribers and growing. If you want to subscribe,
- 42:13Speaker 1: please go to the channel right now and subscribe. And
- 42:17Speaker 1: so when I when I look at this, first of all,
- 42:19Speaker 1: I want to know my first question is gonna be
- 42:21Speaker 1: before I get into any questions, why did you do this?
- 42:25Speaker 1: I didn't because I feel like people need a safe
- 42:27Speaker 1: space to come and feel like they're not alone, that
- 42:32Speaker 1: there's someone out there who has been through something like
- 42:35Speaker 1: what's there UM and didn't give up. I am a divorced,
- 42:44Speaker 1: single mom of two UM who comes from a divorced
- 42:49Speaker 1: family in a very complex industry and still remain positive
- 42:58Speaker 1: and humble and UM still wanting to believe the good
- 43:04Speaker 1: and everything. So I feel like the show allows me
- 43:09Speaker 1: a space is very therapist feutic for me by the
- 43:11Speaker 1: way UM allows me to be me, allows people to
- 43:15Speaker 1: see me for me and UM just to just be.
- 43:22Speaker 1: But you know, to me, you know, I'm with it
- 43:26Speaker 1: and the laugh abouself some time and cry And do
- 43:28Speaker 1: you do a lot of crying? Now? You do a
- 43:30Speaker 1: lot of crying that I'm a lot of my crying.
- 43:33Speaker 1: You cried again, girl, cried again. But you look good
- 43:36Speaker 1: when you cried. You have a good looking cry. I'm
- 43:38Speaker 1: an ugly cry. I'm an ugly cry. I forgot to
- 43:41Speaker 1: ask this one question. I gotta go back to the
- 43:42Speaker 1: raising kanan playing a playing a series this gangster guns,
- 43:48Speaker 1: people dying, people getting killed. Now, you've never done that
- 43:52Speaker 1: on TV before, at least I never, so I think
- 43:54Speaker 1: I've watched everything you've done. How did that? How did that?
- 43:58Speaker 1: How did that whole approached to coming into a series
- 44:02Speaker 1: that's tied to violence? How did they how did they
- 44:06Speaker 1: sink into your mind? That was a lot because I
- 44:10Speaker 1: normally don't do well with shows like that and watching
- 44:13Speaker 1: them because I'm a very sensitive person. Even that's the
- 44:17Speaker 1: first season, I was like, oh no, um, but I
- 44:22Speaker 1: you know what I watched. I heard as I was
- 44:27Speaker 1: as traumatized as I thought I would be really enjoying
- 44:33Speaker 1: the show. Um, and it was something different for me.
- 44:37Speaker 1: It was very different for me. Like you said, I'm
- 44:39Speaker 1: a soft and fuss, I'm a busy you know, rom
- 44:43Speaker 1: com I want you on the wrong camp. But I
- 44:47Speaker 1: watched the Netflix got me. Netflix got me on the
- 44:50Speaker 1: romantic comedy. I watched them all the time. Now that
- 44:55Speaker 1: the reason I'm gonna telling everybody I cheated a little
- 44:58Speaker 1: bit on this interview everybody because she I went to
- 45:00Speaker 1: her series and then one of the episodes called high
- 45:03Speaker 1: Landing My Highlight My Powerful New Role is an episode,
- 45:08Speaker 1: and so some of the questions I got were not
- 45:10Speaker 1: the questions they sent me or from what she openly
- 45:13Speaker 1: and honestly talked about her career, the trusting, the process, uh,
- 45:19Speaker 1: sometimes losing faith and realizing the faith they left you.
- 45:23Speaker 1: You left faith, okay, um, realizing that just because you
- 45:28Speaker 1: got something that me is guaranteed. All this is in
- 45:31Speaker 1: this one less than twelve minute interview. You know this,
- 45:35Speaker 1: this confessional, this twilve minutes. This usually getting this in
- 45:39Speaker 1: an hour. She cried, she laughed, She talked about losing
- 45:42Speaker 1: one of the best friends. This is what I'm talking about.
- 45:45Speaker 1: If this is like must see YouTube television and this
- 45:49Speaker 1: is one episode, it's like she does a combination of
- 45:53Speaker 1: five levels. She guys these jad whoop ear rings on,
- 45:56Speaker 1: and she keeps fiddling with him because one goes this way,
- 45:59Speaker 1: she puts an in to go the other way. It's
- 46:02Speaker 1: just it's just I'm telling I watched one thing. I
- 46:05Speaker 1: don't do LaToya when people come to this show. I
- 46:08Speaker 1: don't ask these generic questions because I think it's offensive.
- 46:11Speaker 1: I want everybody to know that I'm just honored for
- 46:14Speaker 1: a talent of your caliper coming on my show. So
- 46:16Speaker 1: I have to be the most respectful part and let
- 46:18Speaker 1: them know that I respected so much that I'm going
- 46:21Speaker 1: to give my time to have a clear understanding of
- 46:23Speaker 1: what you're doing in your life. And this whole YouTube
- 46:27Speaker 1: channel called leave It to LaToya so YouTube and the
- 46:31Speaker 1: honest journey that you go through each episode, it's incredible,
- 46:35Speaker 1: you know, confronting my absent father, having a conversation with
- 46:38Speaker 1: my ex. Wow, you for real, LaToya. It's a lot.
- 46:45Speaker 1: It's a lot. It's it's a lot. Yeah, But I
- 46:50Speaker 1: feel it's necessary in order for us to grow and
- 46:53Speaker 1: and living our truth, are honest to God truth. M
- 46:58Speaker 1: that it takes some stretching, It takes getting uncomfortable, It
- 47:01Speaker 1: takes you know, asking those very um complicated questions um
- 47:07Speaker 1: that you might not be ready for the answer for um.
- 47:11Speaker 1: It takes all of that in order for us to grow. Right.
- 47:15Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I feel it's necessary. Okay, now, because I
- 47:20Speaker 1: love reading comments, you know, and I think that that
- 47:23Speaker 1: that you know, that that drives why you should do
- 47:25Speaker 1: things that you're also tells you what people are really
- 47:30Speaker 1: motivated about when you do that. And so in reading
- 47:34Speaker 1: these comments, I've realized how much you know your fan
- 47:37Speaker 1: but you have such a Laurel fan base first of all. Secondly,
- 47:40Speaker 1: how much you know that I'm not telling you nothing.
- 47:44Speaker 1: You know. The one thing about you know the social media,
- 47:48Speaker 1: and I see I respect even to subscribe as a
- 47:51Speaker 1: little bit more on social media, because that's a clearly
- 47:53Speaker 1: commitment when people subscribe on YouTube or subscribe to a
- 47:57Speaker 1: fan club. Because sometimes you can just like a Hamburg
- 48:00Speaker 1: or not really mean they like you, or like a flower,
- 48:03Speaker 1: like you in a bikini, or like you in a trip.
- 48:05Speaker 1: They don't mean they really like you, They're just like
- 48:07Speaker 1: that moment. And so so when I'm reading YouTube, it
- 48:09Speaker 1: really gives me an honest sense of who cares about you,
- 48:13Speaker 1: and I think that's really important and how you're affecting people.
- 48:16Speaker 1: So what is the future of leave it to your LaToya? Well,
- 48:20Speaker 1: we're working on season two right now. I'm super excited
- 48:24Speaker 1: about that. I think it's one of the things that
- 48:28Speaker 1: will um just file. It's a legacy moment for me,
- 48:32Speaker 1: you know what I mean? Either earth, that content will
- 48:36Speaker 1: still be here and people will get to hear me,
- 48:39Speaker 1: see me, get to know me UM, and I think
- 48:43Speaker 1: that that's important. I think it's a part of leaving
- 48:45Speaker 1: my mark. Uh So we're working on UM season two.
- 48:50Speaker 1: You said we Okay, now you say the word we
- 48:52Speaker 1: assuming like I know or who is the week there
- 48:56Speaker 1: we go about people you know, they know you, but
- 49:01Speaker 1: we we use your cousin that the village. That's what
- 49:08Speaker 1: I say awesome because again, you know, when I look
- 49:11Speaker 1: at the shows, I when I was watching the episode
- 49:14Speaker 1: a boy confronting my absent father, I have to wear
- 49:17Speaker 1: ask one question. Well, the big question is why, and
- 49:21Speaker 1: then the second big question is what did you get
- 49:24Speaker 1: out of it personally? Because I know it's a message
- 49:27Speaker 1: to understand some form of forgiveness or some formal understand,
- 49:30Speaker 1: some form of closure that people have to have in
- 49:33Speaker 1: their life. But for you to take on that responsibility,
- 49:36Speaker 1: you know, this is not no, no, big daytime talk show.
- 49:40Speaker 1: This is an intimate moment where you said, you know something.
- 49:43Speaker 1: All right, I'm going out of my way because that's
- 49:45Speaker 1: what Because this is decision. Nobody's pitching in the room here.
- 49:48Speaker 1: You know something. We got this hot daytime talking show.
- 49:50Speaker 1: We want to bring your dad. They on, No, this
- 49:52Speaker 1: is something you decided you wanted to do. Why I
- 50:00Speaker 1: I needed that more than ever. Um. I got a
- 50:04Speaker 1: lot of questions answered. There was so much helling in
- 50:07Speaker 1: that moment um, and we both came with open hearts
- 50:13Speaker 1: and a listening to here. Um the accountability was there.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Um the UM. I feel like the transparency on my
- 50:26Speaker 1: father's side and me really getting to kind of go
- 50:30Speaker 1: back in time too, when he was twenty four and
- 50:32Speaker 1: having to make some real adult decisions. Although you know,
- 50:38Speaker 1: yes he was a father and he was a husband,
- 50:42Speaker 1: he was also still coming into his own and so
- 50:46Speaker 1: did he make the best decisions Maybe not, but for
- 50:50Speaker 1: a person his age, I just feel like I had
- 50:53Speaker 1: to show him some grace. I had to understanding, you know,
- 50:59Speaker 1: I had to present some understanding as to why my
- 51:04Speaker 1: father made some of the decisions that he made. But
- 51:09Speaker 1: I think because he was so open and so transparent
- 51:12Speaker 1: and so, you know, he was just showing up with
- 51:15Speaker 1: all this accountability. The wall of of I did what
- 51:21Speaker 1: I did and get over it was down, you know,
- 51:25Speaker 1: he I there was some trust developed there because he
- 51:29Speaker 1: was being so honest in that moment um, and I
- 51:33Speaker 1: just felt it was necessary. I felt there's so many
- 51:35Speaker 1: people out there that have this built up unforgiveness, bitterness
- 51:41Speaker 1: towards people in their lives or in their experience, that
- 51:45Speaker 1: if they just would have an honest conversation, UM, and
- 51:49Speaker 1: hopefully a mature conversation, that they would get the answers
- 51:52Speaker 1: they need and you know, be able to push forward
- 51:54Speaker 1: and move on um and not hope that bitterness because
- 51:58Speaker 1: at the end of the day, that's killing us, you
- 52:00Speaker 1: know what I mean, that the weight of that is
- 52:04Speaker 1: killing us. And I just was hoping that through my
- 52:07Speaker 1: conversation somebody would be bold enough and you know, have
- 52:11Speaker 1: the courage to finally have the conversation that needed to
- 52:14Speaker 1: take place between themselves and their loved one. Well, ladies
- 52:18Speaker 1: and gentlemen, I had the fortunate opportunity to see h
- 52:23Speaker 1: a rose starting to bloom, and over the years I've
- 52:26Speaker 1: seen it bro and it's become a garden, a gardener showcase,
- 52:31Speaker 1: a singing ability, acting ability, the ability to be honest
- 52:36Speaker 1: and courageous. You can see her every Sunday now on

- 52:44Speaker 1: of it. She plays his wonderful character with media levels

- 53:49Speaker 1: within the community. We say when when when we're telling
- 53:52Speaker 1: them about why they're voting, we'll saying you're not You're
- 53:54Speaker 1: not voting because you want to get some political party
- 53:57Speaker 1: in our office. What you're voting for is your vote
- 54:00Speaker 1: for yourself that you have to use every until your
- 54:03Speaker 1: community has everything that it needs. You have to use

- 54:09Speaker 1: to reduce the harm in your community and make sure

- 54:17Speaker 1: And that's real. Whether you vote or not, somebody's gonna
