- 7:10At least three copies of your data. On two different
- 7:13types of media. With one copy kept off -site.

- 7:35Off -site disaster recovery or DR? Right, DR

- 8:00It ties into your RTO recovery time objective,
- 8:04how fast you need to be back up, and RPO recovery
- 8:06point objective, how much data loss you can tolerate.
- 8:09So what are the types? First, you've got cold
- 8:11sites. These are the most basic, like an empty
- 8:14room with power and network you have to bring
- 8:16in and set up all your systems. So longer downtime,
- 8:18but cheaper. Exactly. Lower operational costs,
- 8:21but it takes time to get running. It's a bare
- 8:23bones emergency option. Okay, then what? Warm
- 8:26sites. A middle ground. They have some infrastructure,
- 8:28pre -confined servers, network are there, maybe
- 8:31even software installed. Faster recovery than
- 8:34cold. But the data isn't live. Right. Your production
- 8:37data isn't immediately there. Often used for
- 8:39less critical apps where a few hours of downtime
- 8:42is acceptable. Like the emergency shelter is
- 8:44stocked, but you still need to move in. Got it.
- 8:47And the top tier. Hot sites. Yeah. The most robust.
- 8:50Everything is mirrored from your production site
- 8:52and running concurrently. If the main site goes
- 8:55down, you fail over almost instantly. Minimal
- 8:58interruption. Sounds ideal for critical systems.
- 9:00It is. Meets very demanding, near -zero RTOs.
- 9:04But, as you'd expect, it's the most expensive
- 9:06because you're essentially running two live environments
- 9:08all the time. Okay, that makes sense. How does
- 9:10this relate to data replication versus backup?
- 9:13Good question. Backups, remember, are snapshots
- 9:16in time. Point -in -time copies. Great for restoring
- 9:19specific files or rolling back, but the recovery
- 9:22takes time. pulling from that static copy. Whereas
- 9:24replication is more continuous. Exactly. Data
- 9:28replication provides continuous or near -continuous
- 9:31updates to the recovery site. You can achieve
- 9:33almost zero data loss, RPO, and very fast recovery,

- 18:23massive long -term archives. So mix is often
- 18:25best. Multi -tier. The 3 -2 -1 rule again. That's
- 18:28the robust approach, yes. Use different media
- 18:30for different retention periods and locations.
- 18:32Layers of safety. Okay, finally, implementing
- 18:34and testing the policy. Right. Define your tiers,
- 18:37short, medium, long -term. Map data to them.
