- 0:44Speaker 1: their journeys. There there are missteps their success stories, because
- 0:48Speaker 1: in the process of creating success stories, there are missteps,
- 0:51Speaker 1: and you need to understand that there are some valleys
- 0:53Speaker 1: as well as there's some peaks and your journeys to success.
- 0:56Speaker 1: My next guest as a Eustonian. I'm from Houston, so
- 0:59Speaker 1: I'm always happened to bring on the fellow us tonight
- 1:02Speaker 1: onto the show. It's Chris Gaston. Chris Gaston fold founded
- 1:06Speaker 1: Family First Sports Firm with his wife in twenty and eighteen.
- 1:09Speaker 1: The agency Family First focused on empowerment, economic growth, and
- 1:13Speaker 1: black excellence. The agency represents DeAndre Darren Darren Fox of
- 1:19Speaker 1: the That's just correct, I say the right deer in
- 1:23Speaker 1: Fox of the Sacramento Kings. Gaston is signed the largest
- 1:26Speaker 1: contract in the Sacramento Kings franchise history five years, a
- 1:29Speaker 1: hundred and sixty three million, and then secured a four
- 1:32Speaker 1: million dollar deal for Damien Dodson, former U of H
- 1:35Speaker 1: grad That's why I went to school and the toughest
- 1:38Speaker 1: free agent market and in NBA history. He's now with
- 1:40Speaker 1: the Cleveland Cavalier Leers. He originally started out the New
- 1:43Speaker 1: York Knicks. Gaston made his way in the industry through
- 1:46Speaker 1: player development, working with many of the top players in
- 1:49Speaker 1: the NBA college in high school. Please welcome to money
- 1:51Speaker 1: making conversation A man who understands relationships, Mr Chris Gaston. Yes,
- 1:57Speaker 1: sir man man, pleasure to have me man, know you
- 2:00Speaker 1: was in Houston native, so I was good talking to
- 2:02Speaker 1: a fellow Houston guy. You know, we're very proud. You
- 2:04Speaker 1: know we were to that age symbol on our on
- 2:07Speaker 1: our hearts and man, wherever we go, well you have
- 2:09Speaker 1: to you know, I will also be broadcasting on KTSU,
- 2:12Speaker 1: so this show would be area KSU and the Houston
- 2:14Speaker 1: market on that every Tuesday from twel to one. So
- 2:17Speaker 1: make sure this episode airs in the Houston market. So
- 2:20Speaker 1: you know, again you have a brand that you developed.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And I started that out by saying relationships because when
- 2:26Speaker 1: we talk about working with NBA players or top college
- 2:29Speaker 1: players in NBA college in high school, talking about your
- 2:31Speaker 1: journey right quick, Chris, because everybody wants to be an agent.
- 2:34Speaker 1: But you can be an agent, but if you don't
- 2:36Speaker 1: have the relationships, then you don't have talent to sign
- 2:39Speaker 1: to these big deals that we just talked about in
- 2:41Speaker 1: your opening credits. Man, being an agent is all about relationships, man,
- 2:47Speaker 1: and you know these relationships don't happen. It's just like
- 2:50Speaker 1: building trusts. You can't build trusts overnight. So these relationships
- 2:53Speaker 1: are ten, fifteen, twenty years in the making. You know,
- 2:57Speaker 1: I'm not an overnight success. You know I started, Man,
- 3:00Speaker 1: I grinded from the bottom. I started working on high
- 3:03Speaker 1: school girls. You know that I was blessing up that.
- 3:06Speaker 1: You know a guy that I called, you know, like
- 3:07Speaker 1: my little brother, a guy by the name of Tommy
- 3:09Speaker 1: Mason Griffin and know him since he was in the
- 3:12Speaker 1: second and third grade. You know, I started working with
- 3:14Speaker 1: him and he turned out to be a McDonald's all American,
- 3:16Speaker 1: you know, out of Madison High School, high school I
- 3:19Speaker 1: went to. And it kind of snowball from there, man
- 3:22Speaker 1: to just working guys out. UM started an AU program.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Thought I wanted to be a college coach. That didn't
- 3:30Speaker 1: work out, and it just kept growing and growing. I
- 3:33Speaker 1: just kept grinding and grinding. This is you know, this
- 3:36Speaker 1: is years and years of relationship to get to this point.
- 3:39Speaker 1: So you know, everybody wants to be a Rich Paul
- 3:41Speaker 1: or Jeremy Grin and they could just wake up over
- 3:43Speaker 1: and I even take a test become an agent. It's
- 3:46Speaker 1: not that simple. Man, Well, he had the ultimate relationship.
- 3:51Speaker 1: That's uh called Lebron James and that's him Maverick and
- 3:55Speaker 1: uhre's a great story about black men who started out
- 3:59Speaker 1: in high school who built a sports empire, a media empire,
- 4:04Speaker 1: and a philanthropic UH empire. As we all know, Labron
- 4:08Speaker 1: is very influential. And the h A movement and civil
- 4:12Speaker 1: rights arrested, UH siver arrested happened this summer as well
- 4:15Speaker 1: as the getting not to vote. And so how does
- 4:18Speaker 1: that play to your agency? Because we talk about your
- 4:20Speaker 1: agency and focuses on empowerment, economic growth and black excellent,
- 4:23Speaker 1: Let's start with the empowerment part. What empowerment is first,
- 4:28Speaker 1: I have to empower myself, Yes, because people that look
- 4:31Speaker 1: like me, that walk and talk like me, that where
- 4:33Speaker 1: they're haired, and you know, any type of style they want,
- 4:36Speaker 1: they don't get opportunities in this business. Their stereotype, their judge.
- 4:40Speaker 1: It's just hard. Like you know, majority of the men
- 4:42Speaker 1: own the court, players on the court, or African American
- 4:45Speaker 1: or minorities, but the majority of the business that happens
- 4:48Speaker 1: off the court. People hearing these guys careers are whitening
- 4:51Speaker 1: and it's just lopside. And you know, I've been here
- 4:54Speaker 1: being through changing that and given you know, all minorities
- 4:57Speaker 1: and women a chance and empowerment this business. So um,
- 5:01Speaker 1: I'm not slaying to hiring one person or another but
- 5:04Speaker 1: I but I knew I'm big on hiring minorities and
- 5:07Speaker 1: people who normally wouldn't get a chance to work in
- 5:09Speaker 1: this industry. That's very important thing I can I can
- 5:11Speaker 1: relate to you. You know, I managed Steve hard in
- 5:13Speaker 1: my background, Steve Harvey. Talents like Steve Harvey doesn't get
- 5:16Speaker 1: associated with talents like me, which can mean that people
- 5:19Speaker 1: of color. I currently managed Steven A. Smith, a high
- 5:22Speaker 1: profile person in the media, especially on the NBA side
- 5:26Speaker 1: with ESPN and negotiating contracts. So it's all that part
- 5:29Speaker 1: about negotiating, being in that doorway, being able to look
- 5:33Speaker 1: at individuals that represented by UH majority firms majority first
- 5:39Speaker 1: like ci A, H William mars U t A and
- 5:43Speaker 1: other other sports agencies that that get out there and
- 5:46Speaker 1: get the athlete first and then used to what happens
- 5:48Speaker 1: they have the ability to court them longer and especially
- 5:51Speaker 1: happens in the football industry, but also in the basketball
- 5:54Speaker 1: industry a little bit different because of the fact that
- 5:57Speaker 1: that's a nurturing process. A you probably programs or i
- 6:01Speaker 1: MG kind of setting it up where they got people,
- 6:04Speaker 1: they got you go down there and participate in their camps.
- 6:07Speaker 1: So but you got in with Mr Fox who's out
- 6:10Speaker 1: of Houston, and Damien Dodson, who went to University Houston.
- 6:14Speaker 1: So these are two people in Houston based. Talk about
- 6:17Speaker 1: how you established your relationship with Fox, because they also
- 6:20Speaker 1: were two talented twins out of the Houston market that
- 6:24Speaker 1: also wins. They went to Kentucky and uh and a
- 6:27Speaker 1: lot was expected of those two young men, you know,
- 6:30Speaker 1: because they were they were much of ballyhoo in fact
- 6:33Speaker 1: that they were even more balued than their Darren was
- 6:37Speaker 1: when he came out of the AD. When they these guys,
- 6:39Speaker 1: they had all the hype around him. But I can't speak.
- 6:42Speaker 1: I don't know specifically what happened with those guys. I mean,
- 6:44Speaker 1: they were great players and just I mean the NBA
- 6:47Speaker 1: is hard. Just didn't paying out for those guys. But
- 6:49Speaker 1: as far as my relationship with with Damien Dodson, he's
- 6:52Speaker 1: actually a family Um. He's my wife's cousin, so i'm him.
- 6:56Speaker 1: When I first started day with my wife and Daniel
- 6:58Speaker 1: was back in six six or seventh grade, he was Yeah,
- 7:02Speaker 1: he was just with me everywhere. He wasn't a big
- 7:04Speaker 1: time prospect or, like you said, a badly hoover fruit.
- 7:07Speaker 1: He was a guy. We just put our head down
- 7:09Speaker 1: and went to work every day. We grinded. I mean
- 7:11Speaker 1: when he went to some trials and tribulations at Oregon
- 7:14Speaker 1: get the Transport University of Right and then you know,
- 7:17Speaker 1: my relationship with darn Fox start when he was in
- 7:19Speaker 1: the fighth grade. I had my own youth program and
- 7:22Speaker 1: one of my friends that was going to be his
- 7:24Speaker 1: coach at the high school said, uh, you should have
- 7:27Speaker 1: come let this kid and play for a tournament on
- 7:30Speaker 1: your seven team and the under program. I'm like, I'm
- 7:33Speaker 1: not letting a fight grade kid come playing up with
- 7:35Speaker 1: these juniors and seniors. They're like, now, you should let
- 7:37Speaker 1: him co play. He's gonna be pretty good. So I
- 7:39Speaker 1: let him come play one tournament, and that was all
- 7:42Speaker 1: she wrote. You know, we've been attacked attached at the
- 7:45Speaker 1: hip ever since. And I'll say that's the difference between
- 7:50Speaker 1: me and Rich Paul. A lot of people try to
- 7:51Speaker 1: compare Rich Paul. Per Se was these guys peers and
- 7:54Speaker 1: kind of grew up with them and hung out with
- 7:56Speaker 1: those guys. You know, me and Darren we want peers.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I was I was a man, he was a child.
- 8:01Speaker 1: You know. I was more of a mentor, a big brother.
- 8:04Speaker 1: And now actually that he's older, we grew into a
- 8:06Speaker 1: different type of relationship. But I wasn't some guy hanging
- 8:10Speaker 1: out at the club with him and calling and texting
- 8:12Speaker 1: him like. No, I was a professional businessman like this
- 8:15Speaker 1: wasn't like you know, some homeboy hookup type stuff like.
- 8:18Speaker 1: But it's all about trust. It's all about trust because
- 8:21Speaker 1: you started earlier, you know, when I when I started
- 8:23Speaker 1: reason to resumeate Chris, you know, because you know, coaching
- 8:27Speaker 1: a lot of discipline in your life, a lot of development,
- 8:29Speaker 1: a lot of motivation comes out your resume, you know
- 8:32Speaker 1: when I look at it, and let's talk about us
- 8:34Speaker 1: walk through these steps. Because I'm not trying to bash
- 8:38Speaker 1: anybody on this show. When I talked about the Harrison Twins,
- 8:40Speaker 1: because but that's how this business is. You can come
- 8:44Speaker 1: out much Bally who they went to Kentucky, had an
- 8:47Speaker 1: incredible career, but then flaws in their game started to
- 8:51Speaker 1: pop up. You know, could have could have handled Rock.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Who's what position is it gonna play? Does he play good? D?
- 8:58Speaker 1: But when I looked at Foxes game, I remember when
- 9:00Speaker 1: he played against Ball, who was much barely hood. How
- 9:04Speaker 1: do you c l a, and there was much talk
- 9:06Speaker 1: after he clowned him. I mean he claimed ball, you know,
- 9:09Speaker 1: in the in the tournament that okay, it's ball A.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Fox should go as we see now, Fox should have
- 9:17Speaker 1: went number two and not Ball, who's been a very
- 9:21Speaker 1: competent player. But again, hype, Ken, how do you slice
- 9:25Speaker 1: through the hype because I remember emotionally, I was really
- 9:28Speaker 1: charmed by by Daren when he was crying on TV
- 9:32Speaker 1: after that loss. I was really man with hype. We
- 9:36Speaker 1: try to block out the noise, man, because there's gonna
- 9:38Speaker 1: be so many people in your ears, so many people
- 9:40Speaker 1: telling you how good you are, like we always want more. Man.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Darren's dad and his mom, they did a great job
- 9:46Speaker 1: of keeping him absolutely. Remember after his preshoneer in high school,
- 9:50Speaker 1: Darren had a fifty two point game, two points, and
- 9:53Speaker 1: all his dad was fussing about after the game, you
- 9:56Speaker 1: missed these rebounds, you missed these balls, you missed these
- 9:59Speaker 1: three throws. Let's go to the gym, the ninety two
- 10:01Speaker 1: pre throws. So it's about keeping keeping, you know, And
- 10:04Speaker 1: it's hard to stay humber when you're getting all these
- 10:06Speaker 1: press Philippians, all these rankings and stuff. So that's why
- 10:09Speaker 1: you're you're supporting circle, your people around your family. They
- 10:12Speaker 1: are very crucial to the player of development. You gotta
- 10:15Speaker 1: keep these guys humble. You know, to your point that
- 10:17Speaker 1: Hash and Twins had a lot of hype, and um,
- 10:20Speaker 1: I mean it just didn't work out. I mean the
- 10:22Speaker 1: NBA is hard business. Like you said, they got Nippick
- 10:24Speaker 1: when they got to Kentucky. They had a lot of
- 10:26Speaker 1: question marks about the game and it just didn't work out.
- 10:29Speaker 1: But you know, you have to stay humble. You have
- 10:32Speaker 1: to block out the noise. You cannot get caught up
- 10:34Speaker 1: in the hype. I've seen the number one pick Anthony
- 10:37Speaker 1: Bennett of the NBA. Now, so I tell people, don't
- 10:42Speaker 1: get caught up in the rankings or pick. You go
- 10:44Speaker 1: the jobs to get in the league and stay in
- 10:46Speaker 1: the league. You know well that some people that get
- 10:49Speaker 1: too caught up in the rankings and who's what. But
- 10:51Speaker 1: we don't get caught up in that. We don't what
- 10:54Speaker 1: the thing about it. So so with that being said,
- 10:56Speaker 1: because that's that's that's daring. Okay, here's it got buch
- 11:00Speaker 1: belly who And then you go to Damien Dodson. You
- 11:03Speaker 1: know when he left your h you know, uh. And
- 11:05Speaker 1: he made the New York Niche team after the tough
- 11:08Speaker 1: defense and he has a good outside shop, good three points.
- 11:12Speaker 1: So he had talked about that process because I was
- 11:15Speaker 1: a different motivation process because the Fox was a lot
- 11:18Speaker 1: of repick, a certain amount of guarantees. You know, he
- 11:21Speaker 1: wasn't gonna get cut his first year. We knew that.
- 11:24Speaker 1: But Damien went in talking about that process and getting
- 11:27Speaker 1: them on the New York Knicks and now he's over
- 11:28Speaker 1: Cleveland now. But I was so proud because he was
- 11:32Speaker 1: He's a really talented NBA player right Well with Damien,
- 11:37Speaker 1: you know, we have a monel man. I always know
- 11:39Speaker 1: his work, you know, dream big, working hard, let God
- 11:41Speaker 1: do the rest. And so that was kind of about model.
- 11:44Speaker 1: You know, we're gonna put We're gonna work as hard
- 11:46Speaker 1: as we can, and wherever the chips may fall, we're
- 11:48Speaker 1: gonna We're gonna be happy with that. So his process
- 11:50Speaker 1: was very different coming out of the University of Houston
- 11:52Speaker 1: there with no guarantees. We packed our badge and went
- 11:55Speaker 1: to l A. We started training. He had to go
- 11:58Speaker 1: to the camp called the COURSEM Invitational the p I T,
- 12:01Speaker 1: which is for the top seniors in the country. Absolutely,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and he went there, he bawled out, he won m
- 12:07Speaker 1: VP of the tournament. And from there he got invited
- 12:09Speaker 1: to the Chicago Combine, which is for the top sixty
- 12:13Speaker 1: prospects in the NBA Draft. He played well there, um
- 12:16Speaker 1: and he we had several NBA workouts, not no for him.
- 12:19Speaker 1: He played what he did with I mean he stepped,
- 12:22Speaker 1: he knocked it out the park, and I mean it
- 12:24Speaker 1: was a ground. He's grueling, is mentally taxing, but he's
- 12:27Speaker 1: built for this man. And you know that's the reason
- 12:29Speaker 1: why he's sticking in the NBA to day, because he
- 12:31Speaker 1: just has that for the two to to fight through adversity.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Let's let's talk about that there. Sticking in the NBA.
- 12:38Speaker 1: These guys are given a lot of money to how
- 12:42Speaker 1: do you you know, I'm a guy. You know I'm
- 12:44Speaker 1: a financier. You know my name, my show, money making conversations.
- 12:48Speaker 1: And so I always believe that some of these young
- 12:51Speaker 1: men should just be they could be the money they
- 12:54Speaker 1: make their first year should be putting the fund where
- 12:56Speaker 1: they can just be delivered liver lifestyle of comfort for
- 13:00Speaker 1: the rest of the for the rest of their life. Really,
- 13:02Speaker 1: it can't be done that way, how do you deal
- 13:04Speaker 1: with these situations? From my financial standford, you're the agent. Now,
- 13:08Speaker 1: they are different lanes out there. I would just let
- 13:09Speaker 1: everybody know and the agent lane, there's a financial lane,
- 13:12Speaker 1: as a brandy person, as a talent agent, there's a
- 13:15Speaker 1: lot of different lanes. What all does your firm encompass? Well,
- 13:20Speaker 1: my friend, we come we hand. The marketing endorsements arefully
- 13:23Speaker 1: contract negotiations. Uh. We do have several different business managers
- 13:27Speaker 1: and financial advisers we work with. We don't pick the
- 13:29Speaker 1: person for We let those guys interview those guys and
- 13:32Speaker 1: pick them. But we do have a few guys that
- 13:33Speaker 1: we trust. And you know, those guys are on the budget.
- 13:37Speaker 1: And at the end of the day, when people say
- 13:39Speaker 1: they point things, you're the reasons why. God. At the
- 13:41Speaker 1: end of the day, it's all on the player. You
- 13:43Speaker 1: can advise them to do don't do X. The financial
- 13:46Speaker 1: visers can tell me this is your budget, but at
- 13:47Speaker 1: the end of the day, it's their money and they're
- 13:49Speaker 1: gonna do what they want to do with their money.
- 13:51Speaker 1: So it's up to inter take their advice from the
- 13:53Speaker 1: financial advisor, from the business manager and stay with their
- 13:57Speaker 1: their budgets, stay within reason, because it's like these guys
- 13:59Speaker 1: are make a lot of money, they can live a
- 14:01Speaker 1: comfortable lifestyle and not go crazy. A lot of guys
- 14:05Speaker 1: go broke, honestly. It's not about barn You really can't.
- 14:08Speaker 1: If you're making thirty million dollars a year, you're not
- 14:10Speaker 1: gonna go broke down a couple of bill leaves and ferrars.
- 14:12Speaker 1: The way people go broke, honestly is loaning out money
- 14:16Speaker 1: that as up going to the club in investments. You
- 14:20Speaker 1: know everybody's coming to with these million dollar ideas and
- 14:23Speaker 1: it sounds good, but that's the way have a lot
- 14:25Speaker 1: of pleasure. Were broken investing their money in the wrong things.

- 14:32Speaker 1: how you celebrate with family and friends, whether you're preparing

- 16:22Speaker 1: the app for free auto dot ai. That's O T
- 16:24Speaker 1: T E R dot ai. Yeah, investing their money, and
- 16:27Speaker 1: then car washes invest in their money, and nightclubs invest
- 16:31Speaker 1: their money and movie ideas. I know that I've been
- 16:34Speaker 1: in the business a long time. I've seen this money
- 16:36Speaker 1: flow out. Everybody wants to be a rapper, Everybody wants
- 16:40Speaker 1: a sound studio. Everybody here is that that final product?
- 16:43Speaker 1: You know, say, hey man, this person here is going
- 16:45Speaker 1: to be the next, you know, next next, But that
- 16:48Speaker 1: does mean that's a reality. And so when I look
- 16:50Speaker 1: at talent like yours that you are, that's where the
- 16:53Speaker 1: father figure comes in. That's where the maturity comes in.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Like you said, you are a man, and you're a
- 16:58Speaker 1: man who's a who's benefited from watching people make these mistakes.
- 17:02Speaker 1: And also player development, let's talk to these Let's walk
- 17:04Speaker 1: through these player development steps that you talk about, and
- 17:07Speaker 1: these camps you put in place, right. So my bread
- 17:12Speaker 1: and butter when I got in the business player development.
- 17:14Speaker 1: You know, a k A working guys out training and
- 17:17Speaker 1: I never just call it training. I call it player
- 17:19Speaker 1: development because we were doing more than just working out.
- 17:22Speaker 1: We've been in a relationship, We're talking about life, we're
- 17:24Speaker 1: talking about girls, god school. So that's why I say
- 17:27Speaker 1: player development instead of training. Training is a word I
- 17:31Speaker 1: feel they used to put you in the box where
- 17:32Speaker 1: like this is all you can do, right, But player
- 17:35Speaker 1: development that was my bread and butter. Man I studied.
- 17:38Speaker 1: I learned it from you know, one of my mentors
- 17:40Speaker 1: as a guy by name and am sorry Lamin. He's
- 17:43Speaker 1: a look not many people know him. He's a he's
- 17:46Speaker 1: a head coach at a small n A school in Florida.
- 17:49Speaker 1: But he's one of my mentors. He's kind of like
- 17:51Speaker 1: a who's whisper. He was kind of a training guru. Man.
- 17:54Speaker 1: I learned a lot from him, and that's where I
- 17:57Speaker 1: cut my teeth at just on the floor. Working guy
- 18:00Speaker 1: is all and I didn't take it for granted. You know,
- 18:02Speaker 1: each player that I had in the gym, whether you're
- 18:04Speaker 1: a high school kid or an NBA player, you know,
- 18:06Speaker 1: I would go home steady a game, watch film and
- 18:09Speaker 1: break it up, and I'll be a ball all night
- 18:11Speaker 1: and study and trying to see how can I make
- 18:14Speaker 1: this player, How can I elevate this game? What can
- 18:16Speaker 1: I do? Really cut my teeth is because I want
- 18:20Speaker 1: to talk about that, because you know I'm gonna tell you, Chris,
- 18:23Speaker 1: I thought I was a hoopster. I thought I had game.
- 18:26Speaker 1: You know, I was so arrogant. I didn't. I didn't.
- 18:29Speaker 1: I was all park, as they said, because I never
- 18:30Speaker 1: played high school ball. But I was all park. You
- 18:32Speaker 1: know funding come on Funday, you know I go down
- 18:36Speaker 1: to McGregor Park. I had all the best black parks
- 18:39Speaker 1: back in the day. I was there. I walked on
- 18:41Speaker 1: the court. You know, I was first pick, first pick
- 18:43Speaker 1: on the sideline shot. Come on, I want you. I
- 18:46Speaker 1: want you. But then I was stupid too because I
- 18:48Speaker 1: didn't understand the fundamentals of the game. I didn't understand that.
- 18:52Speaker 1: And that's that's what we're talking about right now, because
- 18:55Speaker 1: one thing I've learned, when you play street balls, Yes,
- 18:58Speaker 1: there were players I think that will probably other than
- 19:00Speaker 1: the team ALIA wants their plays out there that I'll
- 19:03Speaker 1: jump Dominiquhippers right, they're probably physically better than Lebron James.
- 19:10Speaker 1: You might be going too far with him, man, but
- 19:12Speaker 1: I get your point when you say nothing, come on
- 19:14Speaker 1: that talented guys on the on the on the gonna
- 19:17Speaker 1: be come. I'm talking about street ball. I'm talking about
- 19:21Speaker 1: that hitting these parks. It's some guys out there, man,
- 19:26Speaker 1: they can leap. It's some guys out there can do
- 19:29Speaker 1: like like they had that contest there was on T
- 19:31Speaker 1: and T all these guys who could dunk. Oh, they
- 19:34Speaker 1: can dunk a ball. They can do three sixties. They
- 19:36Speaker 1: can flip the ball over the back, but they can't
- 19:38Speaker 1: play the game. And that's why I'm getting there with me.
- 19:41Speaker 1: I was talented, but I couldn't play the game. I
- 19:43Speaker 1: didn't understand that player development part of that. You were
- 19:46Speaker 1: talking about working with the team. That's why I say,
- 19:50Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying is that you understood it, and
- 19:53Speaker 1: that's what you're doing that that like you said that
- 19:55Speaker 1: basketball whisperer, being able to articulate what what the next
- 19:59Speaker 1: step for the from players? How do you get in
- 20:01Speaker 1: their head and how do we eventually listen to you?
- 20:05Speaker 1: They do they learn from the little no ship you
- 20:07Speaker 1: give this or that makes sense because that's a whole,
- 20:10Speaker 1: that's a huge trust. It's just a little nuances. Man,
- 20:12Speaker 1: some some guys, I never raised my voice. I never yell.
- 20:17Speaker 1: I rarely curse. You know, some guys like to scream
- 20:20Speaker 1: and yell and get over here. You know me, I
- 20:23Speaker 1: just talked to him. I literally talked to him, and
- 20:26Speaker 1: you know, break stuff down. Hey, did you see the
- 20:27Speaker 1: way Yannest did a one too into its pull up?
- 20:30Speaker 1: We want to do the same thing. You know, he'll
- 20:32Speaker 1: where I say a little phrase like you know, he'll
- 20:34Speaker 1: toe explode into a jump shot or and you know,
- 20:37Speaker 1: elementary things, hand in the cookie jar when you shoot,
- 20:41Speaker 1: make sure when you're crossing over, get your shoulders to
- 20:43Speaker 1: the defenders. Hills, just a little key points that when
- 20:46Speaker 1: they started playing, they can hear that my voice in
- 20:48Speaker 1: their head. I'm about to go by this guy and
- 20:50Speaker 1: make sure I get low protective ball. It's just a
- 20:52Speaker 1: little small nuances. It's nothing crazy and over the top.
- 20:56Speaker 1: It's just being a hat. And the main thing for
- 20:59Speaker 1: these guys to trust you is you gotta have a
- 21:00Speaker 1: relationship with I don't have a relationship with you. They're
- 21:02Speaker 1: not gonna trust you with the most precious thing, which
- 21:05Speaker 1: is the basketball, with their game. Okay, cool, And that's
- 21:08Speaker 1: a lot of people miss out on the relationship part.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Those are the best coaches that relationship with their players,
- 21:13Speaker 1: players that run through a brick wall for them. Right.
- 21:15Speaker 1: You know. Now we talked about empowerment. Let's go to
- 21:18Speaker 1: economic growth. Let's talk about that from your firm. We're
- 21:21Speaker 1: talking about Chris Gaston. He is an amazing company out
- 21:24Speaker 1: of Houston, Texas and found in Tween with his wife
- 21:26Speaker 1: called Family First Sports Firm. Talk. We talked about empowerment
- 21:30Speaker 1: that your firm. Let's talk about the economic growth. Yeah,
- 21:35Speaker 1: I didn't hear the last part. You could. I apologize.
- 21:38Speaker 1: As we were talking about your firm, you know that
- 21:39Speaker 1: you founded in Tween called Family First Sports Firm. We
- 21:43Speaker 1: talked about empowerment. Let's talk about the economic growth that
- 21:47Speaker 1: you deal with your players. Right. Well, one thing we
- 21:50Speaker 1: want to do is we want to put the dollar
- 21:53Speaker 1: black back in the black community. You know. Um. We
- 21:58Speaker 1: we want to invest in small businesses. We want to
- 22:00Speaker 1: support um young entrepreneurs. We want to get like I said,
- 22:04Speaker 1: we want to we were voice for the unheard. We
- 22:06Speaker 1: want to speak for the unheard. Man, it's not saying
- 22:09Speaker 1: we're not gonna do with big companies and stuff. I mean,
- 22:11Speaker 1: we gotta deal with Nike, we gotta we do deals
- 22:13Speaker 1: with Red Bulls. So that's not to say we're not done.
- 22:16Speaker 1: We're not stupid. When we say economic growth. We want
- 22:19Speaker 1: to put the dollar black back in the black community.
- 22:22Speaker 1: You know. We want these players to help their family out,
- 22:24Speaker 1: but do it in a way that's gonna create growth,
- 22:27Speaker 1: not just say, man, mom, here go a hundred thousand
- 22:29Speaker 1: dollars like no, Mama, we're gonna create a company or
- 22:34Speaker 1: escorp or LLC. You're gonna be the you know, create
- 22:37Speaker 1: a foundation and grow it, you know, not just here
- 22:40Speaker 1: goes some money, like no, you take this money and multiplied,
- 22:43Speaker 1: you know, making times ten, you know, teen x and
- 22:45Speaker 1: growing in something else. So that's what we mean when
- 22:47Speaker 1: we say economic growth. Just teaching these players financial literacy
- 22:51Speaker 1: and you know, financial growth. And that's what so many,
- 22:54Speaker 1: not just in basketball, but at all sports. The financial
- 22:58Speaker 1: literacy part fails so many because they don't have mentors.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Because I consider your mentor too to these young men,
- 23:04Speaker 1: because as well as an agent representative so black excellence.
- 23:09Speaker 1: You know, I hear black excellent throughout your force. I
- 23:12Speaker 1: hear the ability to give back to the black community.
- 23:15Speaker 1: That's all part of the empowerment. Now, we went through
- 23:18Speaker 1: a very amazing season that happened this year because of
- 23:22Speaker 1: COVID eighteen and the civil unrest. We saw the actual
- 23:26Speaker 1: NBA walk off the court basically based on the incident
- 23:29Speaker 1: that happened in Milwaukee. How did your players deal with
- 23:32Speaker 1: that and how did you deal with it? Chris Um.
- 23:37Speaker 1: It was a very emotional time. As you know. Damien Dodson,
- 23:40Speaker 1: he went to Yatees High School which grew up in
- 23:43Speaker 1: the same neighborhood, same high school as George Floyd. So
- 23:45Speaker 1: they hit close to home. And you know Stephen Jackson,
- 23:48Speaker 1: you know, he's a good friend of mine. He's one
- 23:49Speaker 1: of the people are starting to business. One of the
- 23:51Speaker 1: first NBA players I started working out. Uh, you know
- 23:54Speaker 1: that he was very close to George Floyd. I mean
- 23:56Speaker 1: they called each other twins, so that I mean they
- 23:58Speaker 1: hit home for us. They hit close to and actually
- 24:01Speaker 1: one of the players and there I knew from Yates
- 24:03Speaker 1: High schools George Floyd was his cousin, which I didn't know,
- 24:06Speaker 1: And so they're close to home. So we participated in
- 24:08Speaker 1: the marches in Houston, um Fox, you know, we went
- 24:11Speaker 1: and flew up the Sacramento participated in peaceful protests. And
- 24:15Speaker 1: I say peaceful because you know we want the ones
- 24:17Speaker 1: riding and looting. But that's a story for another day.
- 24:20Speaker 1: But participating in peace for protests and Sacramento. And we
- 24:26Speaker 1: just encouraged our players to vote and speak out on
- 24:28Speaker 1: any issues. Foxes very vocal on his issues and even
- 24:33Speaker 1: even wore entire racists on the back of this jersey
- 24:35Speaker 1: in the bubble. You know, so all our players are
- 24:37Speaker 1: very outspoken and you know, very vocal about the movement.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Um that was that's going on. Now, that's really important
- 24:44Speaker 1: because of the fact that you know, if social media
- 24:48Speaker 1: plays a role in that, you know, because you have
- 24:50Speaker 1: to be conscious of social media can be a double
- 24:53Speaker 1: as sword. You know, you could post the wrong thing
- 24:55Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden people criticize it for
- 24:57Speaker 1: you post the right thing and then get increased. The
- 24:59Speaker 1: engage meant that you want what what what? What? What
- 25:03Speaker 1: message are you trying to allow your players to put
- 25:06Speaker 1: out there? Like say, you talk about community of all,
- 25:09Speaker 1: when you talk about black excellent, you talk about economic growth.
- 25:11Speaker 1: We talked about empowerment, but what is your company? You know,
- 25:14Speaker 1: because you say family first, what does that mean when
- 25:16Speaker 1: you say family first? Family first is exactly what it means.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Your family is first. And just like a real family,
- 25:23Speaker 1: you're not gonna always disagree. I mean not, I mean people,
- 25:26Speaker 1: You're not gonna always agree. I always gonna be on
- 25:28Speaker 1: the same page. But at the end of the day,
- 25:29Speaker 1: you know, it's all of you know, we all lived
- 25:31Speaker 1: together for the coming, for the coming goods. So that's
- 25:34Speaker 1: exactly what it means. And family first means, you know,
- 25:38Speaker 1: empowering your people. It's okay to grow with the people
- 25:42Speaker 1: that got you to where you are, you know, and
- 25:44Speaker 1: most agencies, most companies, I see, guys make it to
- 25:46Speaker 1: a certain status and then the agency takes it from there, like, okay,
- 25:50Speaker 1: we got it from here. Now you know, uh, your
- 25:53Speaker 1: youth coach, you coach, your mom and your daddy. You
- 25:56Speaker 1: know they helped you get to this point. But now
- 25:58Speaker 1: they're done. You know, we got it from here. Obviously,
- 26:01Speaker 1: the player is gonna grow and they're not gonna be
- 26:03Speaker 1: depended upon their family and things of that nature. But
- 26:07Speaker 1: we still try to do things to make sure that
- 26:09Speaker 1: the family is important. Like when Darren signed his Max contract,
- 26:13Speaker 1: you know, we had a big it's a picture on
- 26:14Speaker 1: instated a big family celebration in Houston. You know, all
- 26:18Speaker 1: black gutar. It's probably over thirty people there, you know,
- 26:22Speaker 1: so we know we celebrated together as a family, not
- 26:24Speaker 1: me and Dearn in a private room by ourself, you know,
- 26:27Speaker 1: popping a bottle and all. We celebrated with everybody that
- 26:30Speaker 1: was important in his life. You know, we celebrated that together.
- 26:33Speaker 1: That was accomplishment for everybody. Because it takes a village,
- 26:36Speaker 1: but it takes a village. But they also lives in
- 26:38Speaker 1: a different city, Sacramento, and he's born and raised in Houston, Texas.
- 26:42Speaker 1: How does that allow him to be the person he
- 26:44Speaker 1: wants to be because Sacramento is a much farther the environment,
- 26:47Speaker 1: as far as population, it's not as I want to say,
- 26:51Speaker 1: African American friendly as the city of Houston is. So
- 26:55Speaker 1: how does he deal with that? Mr? Fox Um, he's
- 26:59Speaker 1: a very smart dude. He's a very cultural dude. And
- 27:01Speaker 1: I said his parents have done a great job of
- 27:04Speaker 1: keeping him grounded. His mom has a foundation, Foxhole Family
- 27:07Speaker 1: Foundation and supports breast counsel wareness because she's a breast
- 27:10Speaker 1: counsel sur about that. Yes, and the dad started AU
- 27:13Speaker 1: Team Team Fox, you know, for the seven of every graders.
- 27:17Speaker 1: So that keeps him connected to the city of Houston.
- 27:19Speaker 1: That keeps him ground. He comes back and supports the
- 27:22Speaker 1: Air You program, comes back to tournaments, he comes back
- 27:24Speaker 1: to events that his mom's doing, so that keeps them
- 27:27Speaker 1: very connected and tied to the city of Houston. Now
- 27:31Speaker 1: your firm, you have two athletes. We continue to have
- 27:34Speaker 1: talked about, how do you recruit future athletes? Are I know,
- 27:37Speaker 1: first of all, you can't reveal certain things on this show,
- 27:40Speaker 1: but how you go about recruiting the next Damien dots
- 27:43Speaker 1: the next deeron Fox? Right, Well, I said, I want
- 27:48Speaker 1: to leave mother two guys out as well. I have
- 27:50Speaker 1: two guys that are currently in the NBA, Fox and Dotson.
- 27:52Speaker 1: I have one former NBA player who spent four years
- 27:56Speaker 1: in the NBA, Eric Morland. He actually want to ring
- 27:58Speaker 1: with the Toronto Raptors. He's currently playing in China. And
- 28:02Speaker 1: then I also represent josh niebo who's a rookie who
- 28:05Speaker 1: he decided not to try to NBA al the G
- 28:07Speaker 1: League round. He's playing in Israel right now. So I
- 28:10Speaker 1: have two guys playing international and two guys that are
- 28:12Speaker 1: currently in the NBA. And how got barb recruiting? It's
- 28:15Speaker 1: all about relationships, man. I don't do a lot of
- 28:17Speaker 1: time races, and I don't d M random guys like hey, hey,
- 28:20Speaker 1: what's what's your name. I have a lot of relationships
- 28:24Speaker 1: built all over the country through ANYU coaches and high
- 28:28Speaker 1: school coaches, college coach, and I just reach out to
- 28:31Speaker 1: my contacts. I kind of checked the board and see
- 28:33Speaker 1: who would be a good fit, and then I, you know,
- 28:35Speaker 1: I reach out to the necessary people, you know, and
- 28:38Speaker 1: I've heard about the European, the China, the Israel. Let's
- 28:42Speaker 1: talk about that, because that's that's that's a that's a
- 28:44Speaker 1: it's it's some players that play their entirely their life.
- 28:47Speaker 1: In fact, you know, Stephan Marbury went over to China
- 28:50Speaker 1: and became the biggest talent that he ever was in
- 28:53Speaker 1: the US. So let's talk about before we wrap up.
- 28:56Speaker 1: I don't want to You have the G legal course
- 28:59Speaker 1: that's tied to the b A, and the NBA is
- 29:00Speaker 1: also saying they are allowed veterans to come into the NBA.
- 29:04Speaker 1: The G League this year, something they weren't doing in
- 29:06Speaker 1: the past. And so now let's talk about going overseas,
- 29:10Speaker 1: the benefits of going overseas, and also it's not being
- 29:13Speaker 1: like a death kill to your career. Well, going over seas,
- 29:19Speaker 1: you gotta make a conscious charts was like, man, I'm
- 29:21Speaker 1: not chasing the NBA dream no more. If it happens,
- 29:24Speaker 1: it happens. But now I want to make money and
- 29:26Speaker 1: I'm trying to feed my family. So the G League
- 29:28Speaker 1: is for guys that's still chasing the NBA dream because
- 29:30Speaker 1: you're getting paying minimum money. But it's like, man, I
- 29:33Speaker 1: wants to work from the NBA, I'm gonna keep chasing it.
- 29:35Speaker 1: I tell young guys that's kind of on the edge
- 29:38Speaker 1: and give yourself a chance. Go to G League for
- 29:40Speaker 1: two or three years while you're still young. Tree. After
- 29:44Speaker 1: two or three years, you gotta do, you know, you
- 29:46Speaker 1: gotta make a business decision and go ahead and you know,
- 29:49Speaker 1: try to build a financial future for you and your family.
- 29:52Speaker 1: And so that's what Eric Morland did. He he played
- 29:56Speaker 1: in the inn bed for four or five years, he
- 29:58Speaker 1: won a championship and now he he's making you know,
- 30:01Speaker 1: last year he made seven figures in China. This year
- 30:03Speaker 1: he's making high six figures. So he's doing really well
- 30:06Speaker 1: for himself. And that's really what it's all about, you know,
- 30:09Speaker 1: in the end, it's about uh, you know you let's
- 30:12Speaker 1: let's let's let's move back the NBA name. It's a business.
- 30:16Speaker 1: It's like I, you know, I have a job. You
- 30:19Speaker 1: have a job, Okay, the NBA playing basketball, that's your skill.
- 30:23Speaker 1: You know. Some people are engineers, some people are artists,
- 30:26Speaker 1: some people are teaching, some people are doctors. They played
- 30:29Speaker 1: basketball for a living. So child at Israel gives them
- 30:34Speaker 1: an opportunity to do what they are skilled best to do,
- 30:38Speaker 1: to play basketball, put the ball in the hole. So
- 30:41Speaker 1: that's what we're talking about right now. It's the business side.
- 30:44Speaker 1: And don't get caught up into if I don't make
- 30:47Speaker 1: an NBA man, what I'm gonna do? Well, you do
- 30:50Speaker 1: a lot. You can go overseas and make a profitable living.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Especially and then when you look at the w n
- 30:55Speaker 1: b A the women over there, they make more money
- 30:58Speaker 1: in the European leagues than they make in the w
- 31:00Speaker 1: NBA league. And so and what did you say earlier?
- 31:03Speaker 1: You said you play at the parks and funding how
- 31:04Speaker 1: much did you get paid to do that? I was
- 31:06Speaker 1: all part free exactly. Y'all be at home playing for
- 31:10Speaker 1: free anyway, So don't get it twisted like this is
- 31:13Speaker 1: a great living and wake up and play basketball every day.
- 31:16Speaker 1: And that's why I would be at the why I'm
- 31:17Speaker 1: saying the local Boys and Girls club playing for free anyway,
- 31:19Speaker 1: Because you love the game. That's why I wanted to
- 31:21Speaker 1: get it. You're getting paid to do something that you love.
- 31:24Speaker 1: That's why I wanted to bring you on the show
- 31:25Speaker 1: because of the fact that you know, we we we
- 31:27Speaker 1: we know about the rich Paul's out there and the
- 31:29Speaker 1: other agencies out there, but I've've been first of all,
- 31:32Speaker 1: you in Houston. I wanted to shine light on you
- 31:34Speaker 1: being in Houston and plus your real dude. I did
- 31:36Speaker 1: my background on used to Richard. They said, it's good Chris.
- 31:39Speaker 1: He keeps it real. You know, he is who he
- 31:41Speaker 1: is and uh and and and he's been fortunate and
- 31:44Speaker 1: blessed to be attached to very talented guys who's playing
- 31:47Speaker 1: in the NBA. But like I said, I only brought
- 31:49Speaker 1: up Damien's you know, Damien's name and Daron's name because
- 31:53Speaker 1: it was part of your bio that was sent over
- 31:55Speaker 1: to me. The most fascinating part of your relationship all
- 31:58Speaker 1: the two players that are playing in China and playing
- 32:00Speaker 1: in Israel, because it goes back to the business side
- 32:03Speaker 1: of the game, business side of the industry. You know,
- 32:05Speaker 1: Kobe Bryant's dad, Kobere born in Italy. It really born
- 32:08Speaker 1: in Italy because his dad was playing in Italy. And
- 32:11Speaker 1: so this is not something short term going overseas. It's
- 32:14Speaker 1: not a negative spirit. A lot of players are bypassing
- 32:18Speaker 1: high school and playing in Australia playing overseas instead of
- 32:22Speaker 1: saying I'm going to a G league, I'm gonna give
- 32:24Speaker 1: up about one year in college. I'm gonna play with
- 32:26Speaker 1: some grown men. And that's what it's all about. So
- 32:29Speaker 1: what's the future of Family First Sports Firm? My friend,
- 32:33Speaker 1: everybody I was asking me that, I'm like, be honest,
- 32:35Speaker 1: wherever God leaves me man, Um, I'm taking it day
- 32:38Speaker 1: by day, claiming by clients. UM. I have a lot
- 32:40Speaker 1: of new exciting things that you can't announced yet, but
- 32:43Speaker 1: that they're gonna be, you know, coming pretty soon from
- 32:45Speaker 1: the groundbacking things that I don't think no other agency
- 32:47Speaker 1: has that are is doing. So I'm always thinking outside
- 32:50Speaker 1: of the box, and I was thinking, how can that
- 32:52Speaker 1: be different? You know what the whole industry is going, right,
- 32:55Speaker 1: I want to make sure I'm going to left makes
- 32:56Speaker 1: I'm going to opposite way. Yeah, you know, every every
- 33:00Speaker 1: player is not gonna be for family first. This is
- 33:02Speaker 1: for people who are believe in their step and who
- 33:04Speaker 1: are confident and who about empowerment. And you know, you
- 33:08Speaker 1: know some people want the comfort of man, I'm going
- 33:10Speaker 1: to CIA or Rock Nation. You know they got the
- 33:12Speaker 1: big name. There's some people that's like, man, you know,
- 33:14Speaker 1: I want to be groundbreaking. I want to be different.
- 33:17Speaker 1: I want to go on a roster where you know,
- 33:19Speaker 1: I'm just a name on the on the wall, I'm
- 33:21Speaker 1: one of for the climates. You know. I want to
- 33:23Speaker 1: go someone to get individualized attention and where I'm gonna
- 33:25Speaker 1: be an important key peace. Well, I like what you
- 33:28Speaker 1: said individualized attention because that's what you get when you
- 33:32Speaker 1: go to these big agents and you don't get apologize,
- 33:34Speaker 1: you don't get you can be uh forgotten peace. If
- 33:38Speaker 1: you don't get the contract, they won't nurture your next step.
- 33:41Speaker 1: And that's what you do with your firm. And I
- 33:44Speaker 1: want to thank you for coming on Money Making Conversations,
- 33:46Speaker 1: share your story and I'm proud of your man. And
- 33:48Speaker 1: any time these little you know, these the these the
- 33:52Speaker 1: projects that you want to announce, please come on Money
- 33:54Speaker 1: Made Conversation. What I like to do, this I like
- 33:56Speaker 1: to do Chris. And next time, let's bring your wife
- 33:58Speaker 1: on the show too, because she found this first year
- 34:01Speaker 1: and so I love doing that power couple uh interviews.
- 34:05Speaker 1: And so next time you come on the show, let's
- 34:07Speaker 1: bring on the show and talk about her contributions to
- 34:10Speaker 1: why this company was found in the twining their team,
- 34:12Speaker 1: but more importantly, used me as a legitimate sounding board
- 34:16Speaker 1: to put your brands out their ideas you have out
- 34:18Speaker 1: there if you want your clients interviewed on my on
- 34:20Speaker 1: the show. As you can see, I'm a major player
- 34:23Speaker 1: in the platform world. I get the biggest talent. I'm
- 34:26Speaker 1: a major player, man, you know. And in the game
- 34:29Speaker 1: he start asking me what you what you like? Man,
- 34:31Speaker 1: I'm a major player in the business. That's what I
- 34:34Speaker 1: come on, Chris. Well, Chris, we talked soon. Brother. I
- 34:37Speaker 1: appreciate you, man, really appreciate you man, and I love
- 34:40Speaker 1: your talent. Man. That that Fox kid man. I was
- 34:42Speaker 1: sold on when he dropped those tears and Damien when
- 34:45Speaker 1: he made the knicks. US say, brother, that's hard working.
- 34:47Speaker 1: A lot of blessings. Man. We got real news. Man,
