- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. And when you're ready, let's
- 0:30dive into God's word together. As we come to Acts chapter 18,
- 0:45we see Paul arrive in the city of Corinth.
- 0:48There he meets a Jewish couple named Aquila and Priscilla
- 0:51who've been forced into Corinth. When the Roman Emperor Claudius
- 0:54commands all the Jews to leave Rome, Paul ends up working with
- 0:57Priscilla and Aquila because they worked in the same trade as
- 1:00he did tent making. This couple is part of the
- 1:03Corinthian church and work with Paul and his ministry there.
- 1:07So much so that when Paul sets sail for Syria, Priscilla and
- 1:10Aquila are with him. They arrive with him at Ephesus
- 1:13where Paul continues to preach the gospel like Corinth.
- 1:16We'll see Paul later write a New Testament epistle to this church
- 1:19founded at Ephesus. The time comes for Paul to
- 1:22depart from Ephesus, and it's Priscilla and Aquila who appeal
- 1:25to Paul to stay longer. He continues on though into the
- 1:28region of Galatia, who again is the recipient of one of Paul's
- 1:31New Testament letters. He leaves Priscilla and Aquila
- 1:34behind at Ephesus to continue on there.
- 1:37Here is where I want us to pick up the story of this couple who
- 1:39continued to say yes to God's call, who continued to put their
- 1:43specific gifts and talents to work for the Kingdom of God.
- 1:47Listen to what happens in Ephesus starting in verse 24.
- 1:50Now a Jew named Apollos, an Alexandrian by birth, an
- 1:53eloquent man, came to Ephesus, and he was mighty.
- 1:55In the Scriptures. This man had been instructed in
- 1:58the way of the Lord, and being fervent in spirit, he was
- 2:00speaking and teaching accurately the things concerning Jesus,
- 2:04being acquainted only with the baptism of John.
- 2:06And he began to speak out boldly in the synagogue.
- 2:09But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside
- 2:12and explained to him the way of God more accurately.
- 2:15And when he wanted to go across to Achaea, the brethren
- 2:17encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him.
- 2:21And when he had arrived, he greatly helped those who had
- 2:23believed through grace, for he powerfully refuted the Jews in
- 2:26public, demonstrating by the Scriptures that Jesus was the
- 2:29Christ. God is raising up another
- 2:32influential minister of the gospel, Apollos.
- 2:35But before he can be the evangelist that God has called
- 2:37him to be, he needs some gentle correction.
- 2:40He needs to hear the full truth about the Holy Spirit, the full
- 2:43power of the gospel of Jesus. And who is it that's there to
- 2:46instruct him? It's Priscilla and Aquila.
- 2:49And again, we see this couple who is not seeking the
- 2:52spotlight, they're not seeking positions of authority, they're
- 2:55not seeking to be the center of attention.
- 2:57They are seeking to be obedient. They're seeking to live out the
- 3:01calling that God has put on their life.
- 3:03In particular, to be a support and an encouragement to Paul and
- 3:07Apollos in their ministry. This spirit LED couple is an
- 3:10early church embodiment of what it looks like to be content in
- 3:14your role in the body of Christ and to build up the body by
- 3:18walking in fruitful and faithful obedience in that role.
- 3:22So what about you? How has God equipped you within
- 3:25your local church? How has He gifted you?
- 3:28What spheres of influence has He given to you?
- 3:31Don't try to be someone that you aren't, but don't sit idle,
- 3:35serve. Use the gifts that He has given
- 3:38you and like Priscilla and Aquila, build up Christchurch.
