- 0:56Speaker 1: Hear me when I say international. From Compton to International
- 0:59Speaker 1: with utsoles, ball and Q which I talked about earlier.
- 1:02Speaker 1: It is right there on Librea. Right there, man, you
- 1:04Speaker 1: got valet parking, everything, great food. Every time I go there, man,
- 1:08Speaker 1: it's just a beautiful, uh display of food. People in
- 1:11Speaker 1: their cross sexual people, uh concession standing at the l
- 1:15Speaker 1: A f C Soccer Stadium a location in Proud Bird
- 1:18Speaker 1: right there in l A. Been there many times. Catering
- 1:20Speaker 1: and the sprawling restaurant and ball called Sanding tone by
- 1:25Speaker 1: Blood Show BBQ in the crowd casino and Millborne him
- 1:28Speaker 1: and now y'all millborn Australia. That's where the International Park
- 1:32Speaker 1: comes from. The legend of Blood so BBQ begins in
- 1:35Speaker 1: course of Countera, Texas. That's right south of Dallas, Texas.
- 1:38Speaker 1: The reason I know. I'm from Houston, Texas, so I
- 1:40Speaker 1: passed through Colta towna many times. I get up to Dallas.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Come on now where the Blood Show family has been
- 1:46Speaker 1: perfecting the craft of slow smith slow smoked meats for
- 1:49Speaker 1: five generations. But while his family roots of Lady in Texas,
- 1:53Speaker 1: Kevin himself was born and raised in Compton, California. That's
- 1:55Speaker 1: where I met him. Now he is a television start
- 1:58Speaker 1: like I said earlier, telling he big time, tell of it,
- 2:00Speaker 1: sitting up that man got make up and anything. You
- 2:02Speaker 1: can catch him judging on Netflix The American Barbecue Showdown.

- 2:13Speaker 1: I've seen his brother everywhere please working the money making conversations.
- 2:16Speaker 1: I want to call him a dear friend and a
- 2:18Speaker 1: guy I feel so blessed to talk to right now
- 2:20Speaker 1: on my show today, my man Kevin Blood too. How
- 2:24Speaker 1: you doing, sir, man, I am good. After that introduction,
- 2:27Speaker 1: I interview over, I'm good. I've been smiling. Well. I
- 2:32Speaker 1: had to because I see you post a let on
- 2:35Speaker 1: the on the on social media. You're gonna be talking
- 2:36Speaker 1: to the legend on Thursday. I saw that this fine.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Let me let me, let me make it perfectly clear.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I would not be doing probably none of this extra
- 2:46Speaker 1: stuff if it wasn't for winning that first Hoodie award. Man,
- 2:50Speaker 1: I would never forget that. I remember talking to you backstage.
- 2:54Speaker 1: It was so cool and it was like I always
- 2:57Speaker 1: knew you and Steve too, but with me and you,
- 2:59Speaker 1: how backstage and man, you came and gave me the hug.
- 3:02Speaker 1: I was like, damn, have I met him? Be false
- 3:04Speaker 1: by just say, man, and I have light. And I
- 3:07Speaker 1: mean you told me something that night. And I don't
- 3:10Speaker 1: know if you remember, but you said you're gonna be
- 3:12Speaker 1: all right. I always look out for your folks. You
- 3:14Speaker 1: remember you told me that. Absolutely absolutely believe that, man,
- 3:19Speaker 1: you know. And I just want to say, man, I
- 3:20Speaker 1: appreciate you. I appreciate everything you guys have done for me. Man.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And I really really missed the Hoodie Awards. I really
- 3:28Speaker 1: do because Win I los. It was so much fun. Man,
- 3:32Speaker 1: how y'all take normal folks from the neighborhood and made
- 3:36Speaker 1: us feel incredible every time for those three and Podas Man,
- 3:40Speaker 1: I just always wanted to thank you guys. Man. It
- 3:42Speaker 1: was an incredible time. It was an incredible ride. And
- 3:45Speaker 1: even because I think I went to like sixth Straighter
- 3:47Speaker 1: absolutely remember we had those little those little meeting greets
- 3:50Speaker 1: and all that stuff. Remember, yeah, man, the little the
- 3:53Speaker 1: great room in there, because don't forget Jevin Won't the
- 4:00Speaker 1: red carpet, that the red carpet And to get my
- 4:04Speaker 1: first one for what was Sally Richard and uh Bernie
- 4:09Speaker 1: Mack and I'm not Bernie mac up George Waller clowning
- 4:12Speaker 1: for thirty minutes and and my pants falling down and
- 4:15Speaker 1: everything and memories. Man, I chairs the sound real though,
- 4:19Speaker 1: you know. So I have the video of of your
- 4:23Speaker 1: winning I don't know if you have that. I'm gonna
- 4:25Speaker 1: send it to you. Please don't show that, man, Please
- 4:28Speaker 1: send it to you. I got them all. I got
- 4:30Speaker 1: that time history of the hoodia wants slash neighborhood of
- 4:32Speaker 1: on I got it. But but you know something giving
- 4:35Speaker 1: It's the thing about it is that that's what it
- 4:37Speaker 1: was all about. It's always been about the people. It's
- 4:39Speaker 1: always recognizing the regular people because you know, we get
- 4:43Speaker 1: so we get become like unknown, we can when we
- 4:46Speaker 1: get burdened, like we're not even delivering a contributing And
- 4:49Speaker 1: that's why I was telling you about to take care
- 4:51Speaker 1: of you people, because what we didn't know, you know,
- 4:54Speaker 1: Steve Harvey now didn't know at the time, was that well,
- 4:57Speaker 1: you know, I started this in Houston, Texas in nineties seven,
- 4:59Speaker 1: just says I was a sidekick on the radio show.
- 5:02Speaker 1: And then what happened when Steve came we got the
- 5:04Speaker 1: radio gig in l A. He said, rich Sean, then
- 5:06Speaker 1: you should do that Hoodie Award thing. I think I
- 5:08Speaker 1: could be big. You know, I would never as a
- 5:11Speaker 1: as an individual, I could never just go to the
- 5:13Speaker 1: radio stations. But Steve was big enough to say, let's
- 5:16Speaker 1: do this, let's do that. I gotta give credit with
- 5:18Speaker 1: credits due, and they wouldn't know. And they sold it,
- 5:21Speaker 1: and we sold the idea. We went to Vegas several
- 5:24Speaker 1: times with the Forum several times, and then we went
- 5:27Speaker 1: back to Vegas. And so it was when you when
- 5:30Speaker 1: you talk about it, you know, because what I didn't
- 5:33Speaker 1: see common was how it affected the business. How enabled
- 5:37Speaker 1: you to talk about how the Hoodie Awards affected you
- 5:39Speaker 1: guys with all that promotion, Steve Holland and out on them.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Here's the nominees, here's the nominees. Here's the top four,
- 5:46Speaker 1: here's the top four. Talk about that, I mean, the
- 5:49Speaker 1: pride that is, I mean, uh, it's like people still
- 5:53Speaker 1: to this day just talking about when it was time
- 5:55Speaker 1: to vote, the first vote and the second vote, and
- 5:58Speaker 1: and and how genius as well us the way y'all
- 6:01Speaker 1: put that together that had the first vote in the
- 6:03Speaker 1: second vote, but just the pride of bringing people together
- 6:06Speaker 1: and people just want to be part of that. And
- 6:09Speaker 1: then when you win and and bringing home, man, it's
- 6:11Speaker 1: like in the neighborhood. It's like you know, winning the
- 6:13Speaker 1: National Championship. You know, everybody want to come, and so
- 6:17Speaker 1: many people would wait to hear if you want. I
- 6:21Speaker 1: mean people. I mean we had customers cry when we lost,
- 6:25Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And uh, it's that I
- 6:28Speaker 1: mean because like I said, you don't have that much.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Like I said, you you don't have that many shows
- 6:32Speaker 1: that do that. Especially, I mean, we barely got enough
- 6:35Speaker 1: of for real celebrities that they give props to to have,
- 6:38Speaker 1: you know, the normal hard work and people trying to
- 6:41Speaker 1: run their businesses and all that doing their thing to
- 6:43Speaker 1: get an award, and and and and like I said,
- 6:45Speaker 1: getting the award from Sally Sally Richards and and and
- 6:48Speaker 1: George Wallace and and the people I met backstage and
- 6:51Speaker 1: just the whole thing. Man, It's incredible, man, I mean,
- 6:54Speaker 1: it was a it was a real beautiful time, man.
- 6:57Speaker 1: And it's just the pride that it brings. And then
- 6:59Speaker 1: the customers that you get. You notice everything that I do,
- 7:03Speaker 1: every show that I say that I do, they say
- 7:06Speaker 1: about winning the Hoodie Award, No matter what they always
- 7:09Speaker 1: said in Canada, Australia and whatever. Like the lady told
- 7:12Speaker 1: the body said, you know, all over always be a
- 7:17Speaker 1: problem man, because like I said, that was just a
- 7:20Speaker 1: really exciting time, man, was it was real fun, you know,
- 7:23Speaker 1: and and and I thank you, you know, because of
- 7:25Speaker 1: the fact that the whole idea, man, was to celebrate
- 7:29Speaker 1: the real stars of the community. That was the basis
- 7:32Speaker 1: of the Video Awards and the Neighborhood Awards because of
- 7:34Speaker 1: the fact that and my whole thought was that, Okay,
- 7:37Speaker 1: instead of have the celebrities being recognized for un let's
- 7:40Speaker 1: use the celebrities. It's almost like props to get people there,
- 7:44Speaker 1: because you know, if we said that we were just
- 7:46Speaker 1: gonna be doing best Bibecue, best high School, would nobody
- 7:48Speaker 1: show up? But you got Steve irvinghol you got the
- 7:51Speaker 1: salary just just Sali Richardson's on stage, you got the
- 7:54Speaker 1: George Wallace so stage, you got Stop Dog Ice Q
- 7:58Speaker 1: showed up one year, Matt Jason showed up. When you
- 8:01Speaker 1: could all these people people going whoa, whoa, what's going
- 8:04Speaker 1: on here? What's going on here? And this allows us
- 8:06Speaker 1: to be back like like in the Green, like before
- 8:08Speaker 1: the Wars and in the green room with him, you know,
- 8:12Speaker 1: having cocktails, but just like and everybody interacting. Man, it
- 8:16Speaker 1: was incredible. And like I said to even the walker
- 8:20Speaker 1: to the not just the red carpet, when we walked
- 8:23Speaker 1: through the casino or whatever, going inside getting ready to
- 8:26Speaker 1: call in and walking inside that arena. Man, that was like.
- 8:29Speaker 1: That was that was That was That was major. That
- 8:33Speaker 1: was that was major because I you know, the thing
- 8:34Speaker 1: about it I would not share. No, that was people
- 8:37Speaker 1: come in and go, man, this is produced better than
- 8:39Speaker 1: the image. Dude, this is better than because I because
- 8:42Speaker 1: I had to do that. The worst thing in the world, man,
- 8:45Speaker 1: is for us as black people, you know, to say
- 8:47Speaker 1: you're gonna do something good for us and didn't do
- 8:49Speaker 1: it half. I didn't do it slopping, And that's what
- 8:53Speaker 1: that was my greatest love, man, because to see the
- 8:55Speaker 1: look on y'all faces because y'all didn't believe it. Okay,
- 8:58Speaker 1: this will always chipped me out. Was those acceptance species.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I wasn't ready for that, Kevin. So I wasn't ready
- 9:03Speaker 1: for because I I told Steve, I was look, man,
- 9:06Speaker 1: I got the fact we're gonna nominate them. I got
- 9:08Speaker 1: the fact we're gonna vote vote. I said, I don't
- 9:10Speaker 1: know what they're gonna say when they get up there. Man.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Y'all got up there, man, and it was like if
- 9:16Speaker 1: they brought me to tears many times, man, because I
- 9:18Speaker 1: didn't realize the impact of a community award. That's what
- 9:23Speaker 1: it was. It was a community award and how it
- 9:26Speaker 1: affected And you know, when I because I always like,
- 9:28Speaker 1: you know, because I was a regular guy. Steve was
- 9:30Speaker 1: still the start, you know, way back there. But I
- 9:33Speaker 1: could go to a restaurant and I went by your
- 9:35Speaker 1: place one time back in the hood. And then when
- 9:38Speaker 1: and then and then I found out my girl Candy,
- 9:40Speaker 1: who should do my backstage celebrity streaming? She said, She said,
- 9:45Speaker 1: Sean Sean Kevin is on Librey, I said, she see
- 9:50Speaker 1: he got a spot on Libra. I didn't even know, Kevin.
- 9:53Speaker 1: I didn't even know you had that. Candy so cool
- 9:55Speaker 1: after my baking sister. Now, man that she is so cool,
- 9:58Speaker 1: always so professional, oh man, and just and incredible, you know.
- 10:03Speaker 1: I mean, your whole staff was just like you know, man,
- 10:08Speaker 1: I mean, and I mean when you guys came out
- 10:10Speaker 1: and did the video of me, uh, and I was
- 10:12Speaker 1: still in COMPLI, man, and I don't even know what
- 10:15Speaker 1: and you know, Candy don't give no information. You know,
- 10:17Speaker 1: I used to find my best to see that. Boy,
- 10:21Speaker 1: you think I'm gonna losing my job over you know
- 10:23Speaker 1: like that. So she said about the video when y'all
- 10:26Speaker 1: did the video, she said, well, well, I don't want
- 10:29Speaker 1: to say she lied, but she lies, like, oh, we
- 10:31Speaker 1: do this with all the contestant with people just don't
- 10:33Speaker 1: get on the video and at the luncheon, and then
- 10:36Speaker 1: I was on the luncheon. I don't even know untill
- 10:37Speaker 1: I got did you know. I mean, everything y'all did
- 10:41Speaker 1: was it was just it was it was for even
- 10:44Speaker 1: like the waiting like like like in that first time.
- 10:47Speaker 1: I mean, I'm I'm nervous. I'm sweating like a brother
- 10:50Speaker 1: of clan the white woman. You know what I'm saying.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I'm sweating that nervous. But I said, man, I ain't
- 10:55Speaker 1: been this nervous since football days. And it was just
- 10:58Speaker 1: uh and and I'm not even too much on it. Man.
- 11:01Speaker 1: It was other contestants that I met, and then the
- 11:03Speaker 1: friendships the people that I met from other businesses that
- 11:06Speaker 1: we are still good friends to this day. Man. That's
- 11:08Speaker 1: what that's what it's all about. Man. I mean, I
- 11:11Speaker 1: hear like the morning show sometimes and I get nervous
- 11:14Speaker 1: because I remember during the time when it's voting time,
- 11:17Speaker 1: because you know, we have Coast got us about a
- 11:20Speaker 1: few hours and they don't already started. I remember that
- 11:23Speaker 1: one year, it was six forty five, they was about
- 11:26Speaker 1: to go off the air and uh and it was
- 11:29Speaker 1: this krapt Tommy said he was doing the top three
- 11:32Speaker 1: or whatever, the top four, and we was number three
- 11:34Speaker 1: already in time. But Steve said, now that's a Now
- 11:37Speaker 1: that don't make no sense. Bless those number three and
- 11:39Speaker 1: number brothers in l A. That's right, So listen, let
- 11:42Speaker 1: me explain everybody. See what happened was from two thousand
- 11:45Speaker 1: one to two thousand five l A, who was LA
- 11:48Speaker 1: based radio station. Steve three and and Kevin and all
- 11:52Speaker 1: everybody was in the other l A show. In two
- 11:54Speaker 1: thousand and five, were left and went to New York
- 11:56Speaker 1: based in New York for two years. So for one
- 11:59Speaker 1: year with a year off two thousand and six, we
- 12:01Speaker 1: didn't even do it. We didn't even do it. But
- 12:02Speaker 1: we're trying to figure out what we had to do
- 12:04Speaker 1: with our own career. We were struggling and trying to
- 12:06Speaker 1: come up after that run, and then two thousand seven
- 12:09Speaker 1: we brought it back and so we're freaking me and
- 12:12Speaker 1: Steve I was like, okay, they in l A. And
- 12:15Speaker 1: so you know, you guys, and like you said, y'all
- 12:18Speaker 1: were three hours difference and y'all were voting. Y'all were
- 12:21Speaker 1: seriously voting Kevin. Yeah, we had him. Uh, we had everybody,
- 12:27Speaker 1: every old college people, everywhere, everybody we knew all over
- 12:30Speaker 1: the United States. We had them going. Man. But like
- 12:33Speaker 1: I said, and you'd be surprised. I mean, people still
- 12:36Speaker 1: come and tell me how much they missed that. And
- 12:38Speaker 1: I missed those weeks of the Hoodie Awards and so
- 12:41Speaker 1: many people. When you win, it would go and I
- 12:44Speaker 1: remember being, you know, like I said, it's starting in
- 12:47Speaker 1: l A. And you did. But I remember being and
- 12:50Speaker 1: I remember, you know a couple of times, but those
- 12:52Speaker 1: was the only one in I mean one time we
- 12:54Speaker 1: were the one my first year we wanted and crash
- 12:57Speaker 1: shall High wanted. And after that it got so people
- 13:01Speaker 1: don't know how hard you know, Yeah, it was like
- 13:06Speaker 1: you know, because you're absolutely right, because two thousand and seven,
- 13:09Speaker 1: two thousand and eight, That's when you know it became
- 13:12Speaker 1: really national because we started out syndicating to all these
- 13:15Speaker 1: walking with New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, you know, Charlotte, Miami,
- 13:22Speaker 1: all these different market dollars and so it wasn't just
- 13:25Speaker 1: l A anymore. That's why I Steer trip that you
- 13:28Speaker 1: guys were able to win before it really explode. And
- 13:31Speaker 1: when it really explode, it was like, Wow, this is
- 13:34Speaker 1: something that was just a just a cool idea that's
- 13:36Speaker 1: become worldwide. But that but that kind of like prepared
- 13:40Speaker 1: you for what you're doing now as as as a
- 13:42Speaker 1: as they said international brand talk about the stuff we
- 13:46Speaker 1: were talking about. Thing is we're talked about coming out
- 13:49Speaker 1: of Comptom. You know, open up your shop. You got
- 13:51Speaker 1: this beautiful restaurant. I'm gonna just tell you about the food. Okay,
- 13:55Speaker 1: and uh blood so ball and cute ball and que
- 13:58Speaker 1: that's on Labria. I swear to you guys every time
- 14:01Speaker 1: I go to l A. You know, the COVID has
- 14:03Speaker 1: kept me out, but I would go there and you know,
- 14:06Speaker 1: I'm telling I'm gonna typing by Candy. Candy Candy she
- 14:10Speaker 1: goes by Kendy Marina because I represent her as an
- 14:12Speaker 1: actress and and uh talk and producer. She took me
- 14:16Speaker 1: that the first time, she said, and she said, Kevin
- 14:18Speaker 1: said he got you on this Rashan. I said, you know,
- 14:20Speaker 1: I don't like that. I don't like that, and said
- 14:22Speaker 1: I don't like and so and so. So. You know,
- 14:26Speaker 1: every time I go in there, I don't even tell nobody.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I don't go. I've taken the Air Force in there.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Air Force in there because I had a big contract
- 14:33Speaker 1: the Air Force, and then I was doing a base
- 14:35Speaker 1: like two hours away and uh and in the month
- 14:39Speaker 1: of March, two hours away. And I told him, I said,
- 14:42Speaker 1: I want you all to go to l A and
- 14:44Speaker 1: Or and get and pick up this barbecue run. They said, Rushan, really,
- 14:48Speaker 1: I said, yes, blood so or Libreya. I said, the
- 14:52Speaker 1: Colin Green's gonna kill you then gonna mess you up. Now,
- 14:55Speaker 1: I said, Colline Green's gonna mess you up. And they
- 14:57Speaker 1: said when they two hours down to our us back,
- 15:01Speaker 1: was nobody disappointed. He went, Wow, let's see why you
- 15:05Speaker 1: would appreciate. That's how powerful I believe in your brand.
- 15:08Speaker 1: That's how good your brain is. Tell everybody about the
- 15:11Speaker 1: menu that you have, the type of food that you
- 15:13Speaker 1: serve on your menu, Kevin. Uh, Like I always say
- 15:16Speaker 1: that we do it right, low and slow, like a
- 15:18Speaker 1: sixth vote. You know what I'm saying. Take our time
- 15:21Speaker 1: to brisket is fifteen hours, the ribs is four to
- 15:24Speaker 1: five hours. You know, we we you know, I'm a
- 15:26Speaker 1: firm believer it's Nat broke. Don't don't fix it. You know.
- 15:29Speaker 1: I still do it the way Willie May feels you
- 15:30Speaker 1: should do it. When I was coming up spend my
- 15:32Speaker 1: summers and of course in Canada, you know, she would
- 15:35Speaker 1: take her time and do it right, you know. And
- 15:37Speaker 1: I just try to I just try to keep that
- 15:40Speaker 1: going at every spot that we got, you know. Um
- 15:43Speaker 1: and like I said, just knowing incredible people like you
- 15:46Speaker 1: and and and and it's so funny you bring up
- 15:48Speaker 1: because I had a discussion about that with a younger
- 15:52Speaker 1: guy who just opened up a spot, and he was saying,
- 15:54Speaker 1: you know, say, you know, uh, sometimes celebrities come in
- 15:57Speaker 1: and and uh this and that, this and that. Let
- 16:00Speaker 1: me just tell you one thing, I don't care who
- 16:02Speaker 1: they are, whatever whatever you give them that option, because
- 16:07Speaker 1: celebrities are different. Some of them are just like you,
- 16:10Speaker 1: who like I want to pay. Some of them don't
- 16:12Speaker 1: you know, but you being you need you need them
- 16:17Speaker 1: more than they need you. And like on any field,
- 16:19Speaker 1: you've got cool people and you've got uh, you know,
- 16:22Speaker 1: people who're tripping or whatever whatever, But that's on you
- 16:26Speaker 1: to understand that. But a celebrity coming in there, it's
- 16:29Speaker 1: gonna look out for your business. But you have to respect.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Just like they respect your work as a chef and
- 16:35Speaker 1: they come to your spot, you have to respect they work.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Like these people don't want to deal with people sometimes,
- 16:40Speaker 1: but they take the time to come come to you
- 16:42Speaker 1: and come to your spot. And sometimes us as business
- 16:45Speaker 1: owners have to really quick speaking on people's pocket books
- 16:48Speaker 1: and all that one tweet or some of the like
- 16:51Speaker 1: when you talk about free advertisement or some of the
- 16:53Speaker 1: stuff that you do. I can never pay for that
- 16:56Speaker 1: because I posted time, I posted a couple of last
- 17:01Speaker 1: month and I hadn't even been there, and I act
- 17:03Speaker 1: like I was there. Yeah, and That's what I'm saying.
- 17:06Speaker 1: But I can't. And I respect that, and I love
- 17:08Speaker 1: that so much. And I try to tell younger brothers
- 17:11Speaker 1: and sisters who opened up get that mentality. They the time,
- 17:15Speaker 1: they're gonna pay, but make sure you give them the
- 17:18Speaker 1: respect that they deserve, you know. I mean, we got
- 17:21Speaker 1: all huge celebrities coming there and do the same thing
- 17:24Speaker 1: with all of them, all of them. You know, I'm
- 17:27Speaker 1: not gonna drop no names, but I'm come about who's
- 17:30Speaker 1: you know, some of the best artists we ever had too,
- 17:32Speaker 1: from the Titanic and everything come in that spot and
- 17:35Speaker 1: they all look out. But you better give them, you know,
- 17:37Speaker 1: take care of the man because these people are gonna
- 17:39Speaker 1: do unique that. Who wasn't for that and the Hoodie
- 17:42Speaker 1: Awards and getting to know that. I mean, there was
- 17:45Speaker 1: so many celebrities that come to the Hoodie Awards that
- 17:47Speaker 1: came to the restaurant afterward. I gotta come see what
- 17:50Speaker 1: this is about. Absolutely absolutely, and that's that's called community.
- 17:53Speaker 1: But the thing about it, let me just tell you
- 17:55Speaker 1: some real talk here. Every time I've been I've been
- 17:58Speaker 1: there over a dozen times. Okay, I brought people with me.
- 18:01Speaker 1: I went in there by myself and just got the
- 18:03Speaker 1: vegetable spread. Because when you get the vegetable spread in
- 18:06Speaker 1: the met it's just too much. And I'm always traveling
- 18:08Speaker 1: and I don't really I'm in a hotel, so I
- 18:10Speaker 1: can't do it to go okay, and so so sometimes
- 18:13Speaker 1: I come in there, give me some corn bread, and
- 18:15Speaker 1: then I give me the the you know, some colar
- 18:17Speaker 1: greens and beans and and so I just break it
- 18:19Speaker 1: up like that. Or sometimes you're coming and get me
- 18:21Speaker 1: a sandwich and so. But every time I go in there,
- 18:24Speaker 1: the service is always on point. Kevin. The meal looks
- 18:29Speaker 1: exactly the same of quality separation. I mean picture, I
- 18:35Speaker 1: take pictures of your food and then people do. People go, Okay,
- 18:39Speaker 1: it looks like that. I said all the time, all
- 18:41Speaker 1: the time. I remember when I brought the National Guarden there.
- 18:44Speaker 1: You know, we was we were standing way in Long
- 18:47Speaker 1: Beach for for conference. I said, they said, it's where
- 18:50Speaker 1: we gonna eat. I said, we're going to uh blood
- 18:53Speaker 1: show bar and Q it's where l A he said.
- 18:56Speaker 1: All way on that. I said, yes, We're gonna go
- 18:58Speaker 1: over there. Went up in there. Man, they went wow
- 19:02Speaker 1: after because because the beauty about the beaut the thing
- 19:05Speaker 1: about coming to this place, like when you get your meal,
- 19:07Speaker 1: you get that double meat, triple mea the order. Because
- 19:09Speaker 1: I'm a tind of guy, man, people, I was saying, man,
- 19:12Speaker 1: you're small, you know all that food. Hey, stay off
- 19:14Speaker 1: my plate, Stay off my plate. Stay we need to
- 19:22Speaker 1: click that up. And so what happens when you have
- 19:24Speaker 1: a boy, five people at the table, okay, and all
- 19:27Speaker 1: that food come to the table. You get attention man,
- 19:30Speaker 1: because it looks so beautiful because every one of the
- 19:33Speaker 1: plates is look immaculate as far as as we want
- 19:36Speaker 1: to say, you work is immaculate. Everything. There's nothing running
- 19:39Speaker 1: off the sides, nothing too small, The portions are good.
- 19:43Speaker 1: That's why I just love what I what I eat.
- 19:45Speaker 1: That's why when I kind of sneak in because Channing,
- 19:48Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell Kevin, you know, you ain't one problem
- 19:51Speaker 1: problem because it's about a respect. That's why I started
- 19:54Speaker 1: the Hoodie Awards, man, because it's about showing love. Man.
- 19:57Speaker 1: The fact that you guys, you still believe in it
- 20:00Speaker 1: just excites me even more. Man. And and and the
- 20:02Speaker 1: fact that the fact that you you're doing so well
- 20:05Speaker 1: and you your TV so talk about how did the
- 20:08Speaker 1: television stuff start for you? And how would you how
- 20:11Speaker 1: would you were you nerv it? Did you know? What?
- 20:12Speaker 1: Did you? Did you play it off? How did it
- 20:14Speaker 1: all kick off for you? Kevin? H what my first one?
- 20:18Speaker 1: And it's so funny, my niece, because I'm I'm just like, shoot,
- 20:22Speaker 1: this is maybe two thousand ten, Kevin, I'm uh, I'm
- 20:27Speaker 1: still knee deep in the competent location. So uh uh,
- 20:30Speaker 1: this producer called and said, hey, we really want to
- 20:34Speaker 1: get you know, Kevin busy. He happened to be at
- 20:36Speaker 1: the restaurant. I didn't know who he was, you know,
- 20:38Speaker 1: in the restaurant, in the kitchen, we clowned in the back.
- 20:40Speaker 1: We clowned and cracked jokes and bag. The dude heard
- 20:43Speaker 1: me back there clowning. So I've never even seen it.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Didn't know who he was. And uh, he kept calling,
- 20:49Speaker 1: and he kept always he got my niece itself on him.
- 20:51Speaker 1: He always calls and she's like, um, this guy wants
- 20:53Speaker 1: you for for a TV show, And I was like
- 20:55Speaker 1: one TV show, Bar Rescue and I never heard of it,
- 20:58Speaker 1: you know, never heard of the show. And that just
- 21:00Speaker 1: and that he kept calling, and then one day she said, look,
- 21:02Speaker 1: this dude need a video. We're gonna go to your
- 21:04Speaker 1: house and do this video. So we we went to
- 21:06Speaker 1: the house and started the video of just you know,
- 21:08Speaker 1: me interviewing or whatever whatever. But before the thing was
- 21:11Speaker 1: even set up, it's me cussing her out and like, God,
- 21:14Speaker 1: I ain't got my t I don't know she's my
- 21:16Speaker 1: name who he's throwing souls and this man. So when
- 21:18Speaker 1: she sent it, she said the whole thing and John
- 21:21Speaker 1: Tafford's seen it anything. Now I gotta have this dude.
- 21:24Speaker 1: I gotta have the bam bam bam. Uh and I
- 21:27Speaker 1: got in a funny story. I'm gonna keep the shore.
- 21:29Speaker 1: But for my first episode was in uh Kansas City. Uh.
- 21:34Speaker 1: I think it was called Boondocks or whatever. The show
- 21:37Speaker 1: never was supposed to air because so we saved this boy.
- 21:41Speaker 1: I'm thinking this dude is. That's when I learned to
- 21:43Speaker 1: between like, oh, southern racist are Southern rocker? This dude
- 21:47Speaker 1: was a Southern rocket. We we actually are good friends
- 21:49Speaker 1: now and you know Southern rocket they like rapp and
- 21:52Speaker 1: country and on. Thinking he was a racist. But anyway,
- 21:55Speaker 1: we get into it on the show, I'm like, you know,
- 21:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna put hands on this food and on the
- 22:00Speaker 1: show and U but he didn't have no reverse. He
- 22:03Speaker 1: didn't have no reverse, so he wasn't no pump. You
- 22:05Speaker 1: know what I mean with it. I'm gonna get I'm
- 22:07Speaker 1: gonna get you, You're gonna get. But anyway, so it's
- 22:10Speaker 1: so crazy. So it takes about a couple of months
- 22:12Speaker 1: with him to do it. So the night before the
- 22:14Speaker 1: show was supposed to hear, which was Thanksgiving weekend that year,
- 22:16Speaker 1: I can't think of in that the exact year, he
- 22:19Speaker 1: was having a party at his bar and got a
- 22:22Speaker 1: guy was smoking, a big time country singer at his bar,
- 22:24Speaker 1: and they got into it, had a fight to do,
- 22:26Speaker 1: kind of got the best and Chris Chris shot and
- 22:29Speaker 1: killed the night before the show was supposed to hear,
- 22:33Speaker 1: so they had to pull up the show. But the
- 22:35Speaker 1: show accidentally aired on the replay later on that night.
- 22:39Speaker 1: And it's a big old thing and all that, but
- 22:41Speaker 1: I'm saying, I'm getting into this food. This food go
- 22:43Speaker 1: to He could have went to the back and out
- 22:44Speaker 1: of gun on me, you know. But that was my
- 22:48Speaker 1: first episode, my first job. And then John Tapper is
- 22:53Speaker 1: like huge in my life, like you guys or I mean,
- 22:55Speaker 1: this dude is as far as business and bars and
- 22:59Speaker 1: the things that he old and like I said, the
- 23:01Speaker 1: team episodes later. Man, he keeps me busy. In fact,
- 23:04Speaker 1: he called me the other day to congratulate me because
- 23:07Speaker 1: the Netflix show is doing so good. Number one after
- 23:10Speaker 1: last week is the number one unscripted show on Netflix.
- 23:13Speaker 1: And it's doing well. Man. First of all, First of all,
- 23:16Speaker 1: that we're talking about the American Barbecue Showdown, Okay, and
- 23:20Speaker 1: they got some characters on there. And your girl from Mississippi,
- 23:23Speaker 1: she's the real deal. Who the whole hall? Did you
- 23:27Speaker 1: know it before the show? Are just I knew ever?
- 23:30Speaker 1: If I knew ever, that was our first time meeting.
- 23:33Speaker 1: And uh, she's incredible. I mean she's a legend. She's
- 23:37Speaker 1: a legend. And uh, and you'd be surprised some of
- 23:39Speaker 1: those cooks to be first time. I mean, they did
- 23:41Speaker 1: such a good job of getting that cast together. I
- 23:44Speaker 1: mean we're hoping for a season two, but you've got
- 23:46Speaker 1: some of the producers might not even want to do
- 23:48Speaker 1: a season two because he said some things just need
- 23:50Speaker 1: to be left untouching. To get that the cast of
- 23:53Speaker 1: of the pit masses that they had and the attitudes
- 23:57Speaker 1: and the personalities, it's hard to you know what I'm
- 24:00Speaker 1: and it's hard to strike gold twice, you know, And well,
- 24:03Speaker 1: you know you're part of well you know you I
- 24:05Speaker 1: know you'll be back because it's part of your brain,
- 24:07Speaker 1: it's part of you. It's just part of what you do.
- 24:10Speaker 1: That that like, you know, when I put the press
- 24:12Speaker 1: relead that belaves out. You know they say, I said
- 24:14Speaker 1: with Kevin's name first, Kevin blood So's name first on
- 24:16Speaker 1: the press release. That press release was reached a hundred
- 24:20Speaker 1: million people. Wow. That press release picked up when you
- 24:24Speaker 1: start talking to my audience, picked up by different websites
- 24:27Speaker 1: and they started putting that numbing together a hundred million people.
- 24:30Speaker 1: And that's what relationships do, Kevin. And that's what you're
- 24:33Speaker 1: talking about this whole conversation is that you respect the process,
- 24:37Speaker 1: you understand the process. Just drop just drop some jewels
- 24:40Speaker 1: on people about the value of relationships, Kevin. I mean,
- 24:44Speaker 1: it's like I said when you when you say look,
- 24:46Speaker 1: I look out. I would not be here if it
- 24:48Speaker 1: wasn't for people looking out for me. And you know
- 24:51Speaker 1: what I'm saying, I always say, uh Russia's uh, I
- 24:55Speaker 1: don't give to be blessed. I'm blessed so I give
- 24:58Speaker 1: you know. It's not no secret. restI you to this.
- 25:00Speaker 1: You know it has to come from your heart. Like
- 25:03Speaker 1: I try to tell people, love to talk about all
- 25:05Speaker 1: the funerals and stuff we paid for um, you know,
- 25:10Speaker 1: with blood cells. Okay, let's also talk about the scholarships
- 25:14Speaker 1: and how many kids we put through college too. It's
- 25:17Speaker 1: more of the good things that outweighed the bad things.
- 25:20Speaker 1: And God has put me in position to help like that.
- 25:23Speaker 1: And that's what I'm saying. And and it it it
- 25:25Speaker 1: comes that, That's what it's. It's like, it's so weird,
- 25:28Speaker 1: it's just and I try to tell people it has
- 25:31Speaker 1: to come from your heart and it's natural. The blessing
- 25:33Speaker 1: is gonna keep ringing in if you do what you're
- 25:35Speaker 1: supposed to do. And how was you raised? You was
- 25:37Speaker 1: raised to give you know, spencing us as black folks.
- 25:40Speaker 1: I mean, you know coming up what we had, all
- 25:42Speaker 1: we had was food and and love and hugs and
- 25:45Speaker 1: all that. And like we gotta we gotta go back
- 25:47Speaker 1: to that. Man, we gotta, we gotta go back to that.
- 25:50Speaker 1: And you gotta want to put the work in. It's
- 25:51Speaker 1: hard work. Like people want to get a business. I know,
- 25:54Speaker 1: you know, a business is gonna be the hardest job
- 25:56Speaker 1: you ever had in your life. And if you don't
- 25:59Speaker 1: have that, it that's why everybody can't do it. A
- 26:01Speaker 1: business is gonna be the hardest job in your I mean,
- 26:05Speaker 1: I said, adding, I want to be like you. I
- 26:06Speaker 1: want to you know, be able to live in Texas,
- 26:08Speaker 1: and this and that, this and that. I said, Okay,
- 26:10Speaker 1: were you ready to go eight years without off day?
- 26:15Speaker 1: You know what I mean, I'm gonna I'm gonna post
- 26:18Speaker 1: that all the motivational car Kevin, don't put that on
- 26:21Speaker 1: my way. Are you ready to give eight years without
- 26:23Speaker 1: off day? Well, let me tell you. When I first
- 26:28Speaker 1: opened up Blood Shocks, I was still d Jane, so
- 26:31Speaker 1: I would have I would. I would get to blood
- 26:33Speaker 1: shows at uh four o'clock on a Saturday morning and
- 26:38Speaker 1: uh be there until seven o'clock at night, go home,
- 26:44Speaker 1: take a shower, pack my gig up, and go do
- 26:46Speaker 1: a DJ gig, get back about two three in the morning,
- 26:50Speaker 1: take a shower, and go up to blood shows to
- 26:53Speaker 1: take briskets off and get ready for the day. Twenty
- 26:55Speaker 1: four hours straight. And that went on for the first
- 26:58Speaker 1: almost year and a half for my business because I
- 27:01Speaker 1: was at one time I was just DJ and and catering,
- 27:03Speaker 1: so I was booked, you know. But I had to
- 27:07Speaker 1: do what I had to do. I mean, my daughter
- 27:08Speaker 1: wrote wanted to wish I had it, and she said,
- 27:10Speaker 1: my daddy, if you knew the work, my daddy, it
- 27:12Speaker 1: was called my Daddy's not overnight success. My daddy would
- 27:15Speaker 1: come in at three four in the morning. I would
- 27:16Speaker 1: just hope my father got at least one hour of sleep,
- 27:19Speaker 1: and I know he didn't. My Daddy's not an overnight success.
- 27:22Speaker 1: And they got to know everybody's path. It's not gonna
- 27:24Speaker 1: be that way, you know, but it's tough, specially when
- 27:27Speaker 1: you and I would and I know you know, when
- 27:29Speaker 1: you know, money making conversations. I would tell anybody if
- 27:32Speaker 1: you can, please have the money and the backing to start,
- 27:36Speaker 1: because when you start on a shoestring budget, that's why
- 27:38Speaker 1: a lot of them don't make it, because you need that.
- 27:41Speaker 1: And us as a community, that's why we need our
- 27:43Speaker 1: own banks and we need because we can't these younger
- 27:45Speaker 1: they can't get the loans. You know. They want you
- 27:47Speaker 1: to to be experienced to get a small business man loan,
- 27:50Speaker 1: but you you need the small business man only get going,
- 27:53Speaker 1: you know, and they and they and they have to
- 27:56Speaker 1: understand that. Then as you grow, get get you know,
- 27:58Speaker 1: get with a good team. I have a good team
- 28:01Speaker 1: behind me. There's no way I could do what I'm
- 28:03Speaker 1: doing if I didn't have the team that uh I
- 28:07Speaker 1: have working you know with with you know, the blood
- 28:10Speaker 1: shows LLC, the people that we have, the things that
- 28:12Speaker 1: have been done, the doors that have opened, to get
- 28:15Speaker 1: tied straight, to get on the bread, to get in
- 28:18Speaker 1: those conversations that we need to be in so we
- 28:20Speaker 1: can have a voice, you know. And that's the whole thing.
- 28:24Speaker 1: You have to have a good team, man, and then
- 28:25Speaker 1: you got to trust the team. You might be the quarterback,
- 28:27Speaker 1: but you need some good running backs, coaches you know
- 28:32Speaker 1: on the side last year, and your own cheer leaders
- 28:35Speaker 1: all that stuff, man, And more importantly, you need fans
- 28:39Speaker 1: in the stands. That's called customers. People, and how you
- 28:43Speaker 1: keep them by putting out a good product. Absolutely, Kevin,
- 28:46Speaker 1: I just want to thank you, man, and uh look,
- 28:49Speaker 1: don't hang up, come and wrap up this show. I
- 28:50Speaker 1: want to get the number and so we can stay
- 28:52Speaker 1: in touch. But uh, I just love you, man, I
- 28:56Speaker 1: just love you, man. Man, I got so much love
- 28:58Speaker 1: and respect for you. Bro. It's it's you know, because
- 29:03Speaker 1: of the fact that I know where you came from.
- 29:06Speaker 1: I know I know, and I know that what I've
- 29:09Speaker 1: been doing all my life and two people, I've been
- 29:10Speaker 1: doing this since all the eighteen years old. For some reason,
- 29:12Speaker 1: God just just said this is what you do. You
- 29:15Speaker 1: uplift people. You know you don't when somebody's behind you,
- 29:17Speaker 1: you don't run off and leave them. You extend their
- 29:20Speaker 1: own or our hand. And that's what the Neighborhood Awards
- 29:22Speaker 1: and that's what the Hoodie Awards was. And to see
- 29:25Speaker 1: you have such a reaction in it, and there's a
- 29:27Speaker 1: lot of people like that. Man, I'll be in d C.
- 29:29Speaker 1: People to Sean, come on that you ain't gonna bring
- 29:31Speaker 1: it back. Come on that shop. I'm talking about barber shops.
- 29:37Speaker 1: I'm talking about high school churches, Detroit, Atlanta, all over
- 29:41Speaker 1: this country. Stop me for real, man, for real? I said, look,
- 29:45Speaker 1: thinking about it. Well, we're thinking about it, man, I
- 29:47Speaker 1: got something else gonna They're gonna jump off. But we're
- 29:49Speaker 1: talking about the brother because I understand exactly what's going off,
- 29:53Speaker 1: what's going on in life, and I know it's need,
- 29:56Speaker 1: especially doing these times or the pandemic and black unrest,
- 29:59Speaker 1: because you know, some of they messed up with this
- 30:01Speaker 1: pregnanlated to date had their knee on her, the police
- 30:05Speaker 1: and that it's not gonna stop, man. And we gotta
- 30:07Speaker 1: go out there and vote. We got to register the vote,
- 30:10Speaker 1: and I'm voting in person, my friend, I am voting
- 30:13Speaker 1: in the person. I'm not messing around with no mail
- 30:15Speaker 1: in ballot. I'm not messing around with that. I wanted
- 30:17Speaker 1: somebody to go, here's your card. Sure you've officially voted,
- 30:20Speaker 1: because I want to people understand that that if you
- 30:22Speaker 1: want something to life, no matter what it is, a business,
- 30:24Speaker 1: you want to graduate, you want to be in a
- 30:26Speaker 1: relationship for a long time, it's hard work. It's hard work,
- 30:30Speaker 1: and voting it's hard if you got stand in that line,
- 30:33Speaker 1: if it's raining, if it's storming, standing that line, because
- 30:36Speaker 1: if you don't make a change, it's gonna be uh
- 30:39Speaker 1: four more years of a life that would never be good,
- 30:42Speaker 1: especially people who aren't making it. And I'm just talking
- 30:45Speaker 1: about you know, we we we've crossed a little line there, Kevin.
- 30:47Speaker 1: We can survive the ignorance. I'm not but say again,
- 30:51Speaker 1: if I'm making it and my people ain't making it,
- 30:53Speaker 1: then I'm not making its use. That's that's that's a burden,
- 30:57Speaker 1: you know. And I always tall you too, And I
- 30:59Speaker 1: know we wrapped, but it wasn't that long ago when
- 31:02Speaker 1: we talked about standing the lines. I meant my son
- 31:05Speaker 1: was at a play football at Utah and he called
- 31:08Speaker 1: me one day and he was just upset and he
- 31:10Speaker 1: was like that he was one at sixty five. I said, yeah, Mark.
- 31:13Speaker 1: He said the Voters Act was made uh June or whatever.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Since if I said yeah, whatever it was. He said,
- 31:19Speaker 1: so when you was born, black people couldn't vote. I
- 31:21Speaker 1: said no. So he said my granting them couldn't vote.
- 31:23Speaker 1: I said no. And if if it hit home with him,
- 31:27Speaker 1: like he knows people, he couldn't believe that he knew
- 31:30Speaker 1: black people that couldn't vote at the time. And if
- 31:33Speaker 1: people don't think certain things can happen again. Like I
- 31:35Speaker 1: tell people all the time, I'm not a conspiracy theorist,
- 31:38Speaker 1: theory of theorists or whatever. I said. But when they came,
- 31:41Speaker 1: when got their brothers from Africa for slavery, I said,
- 31:45Speaker 1: they were living normal life, normal life. I said, please
- 31:49Speaker 1: look at the big picture on everything. Please look at
- 31:53Speaker 1: people trying to line up with with Russia and things
- 31:57Speaker 1: like that. Just always look at the big picture, man,
- 31:59Speaker 1: and get out there and vote. And it's just this.
- 32:01Speaker 1: I never thought we would be to this time again,
- 32:03Speaker 1: and we are. And if this don't bring us all together,
- 32:06Speaker 1: and like I said, you can't say certain things aren't
- 32:09Speaker 1: different because I mean, I was in l A for
- 32:11Speaker 1: the ninety two rides. You know what I need to
- 32:14Speaker 1: brothers and Hispanics out there. But now look at who's
- 32:17Speaker 1: out there now. It's white, black, Hispanic together. And like
- 32:21Speaker 1: I said, maybe not in our lifetime, but I feel
- 32:23Speaker 1: like once you have kids, ain't about maybe in a
- 32:26Speaker 1: lifetime and a lifetime after that, racism might not exist
- 32:29Speaker 1: no more. You know what I mean? And and and
- 32:31Speaker 1: that's what I try to work towards. Man. But we
- 32:33Speaker 1: gotta do it. You know, Yes, Kevin, I would appreciate
- 32:37Speaker 1: you coming on money making conversations with a two times,
- 32:40Speaker 1: I said, two times Steve Harvey Hoody Award winner from
- 32:44Speaker 1: Los Angeles, California, a k A Compton, California, a k
- 32:48Speaker 1: of course, a kind of Texas, just south of Dallas.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Who don't know I forty five? See he know, I
- 32:54Speaker 1: know he knows graduating class, official college. Oh don't about
- 33:02Speaker 1: my sister went to school Bishop College. I know what
- 33:04Speaker 1: you're talking about, man, beep rock. That
