saying that I am not a, you know, I am not a spokesperson

for the Catholic Church, obviously an official

spokesperson of any kind. I am a person who's trying to be

a faithful Catholic. As you guys know, I became

Catholic in college and one of the reasons I became Catholic I

became to see the Church as this is the Church that Christ

founded and it is protecting the treasure of faith and morals,

the teaching on faith and morals through the centuries.

Does that mean that there aren't sometimes confusing things said

by popes or bishops? No, of course, and there have

been for hundreds of years. What hasn't changed though, is

the official teaching of the Church on matters of faith and
7:42
morals. So I want to just start with

that, that well, there can be maybe confusing things said
7:48
about the application of certain truths in today's world.

At the end of the day, the teachings of the Church on faith

and morals do not change, cannot change, will not contradict

Sacred Scripture or tradition. That's one of the many reasons I

became Catholic, because of seeing that consistency for 2000

years despite having corrupt popes and bishops, you know

there have been corrupt Catholics.

I am a sinful Catholic myself. We are all sinners despite our

sin. The Holy Spirit protects and

guards her Church, and that's why Jesus said that the gates of

hell will not prevail against the Church.

So I'm going to start with that because that gives me so much

peace, by the way, and I do want to, there's a lot of Catholics

listening. There's some certainly

Protestants listening. Who are concerned about this

because of course the Pope has influenced just generally

speaking worldwide and the Vatican, as I think it should,

as he should. But I just want to encourage you

that media headlines, even things that might not seem

crystal clear, you know, maybe some things that might seem a
8:52
little confusing and some of these, these documents, at the
8:56
end of the day, the core teaching is the same, has always

been the same and will not change.

So I want to encourage you on that, that this is not some

crisis in terms of, oh, you know, the Pope has now said

that, you know, people, a man marriage is not between a man

and a woman anymore. The Pope cannot say that.

The Pope will not say that. And that's certainly not what

this document says either. All right, that's really

important to start with. I also want to encourage you

that at the end of the day, we're all sinners, human beings,

and we have this special treasure chest in the church, in

the papacy. Not that the Pope is perfect and

not that the Pope is infallible in all circumstances.

This is a really important misunderstanding, I think that

even some Catholics have. But certainly, our brothers and
9:44
sisters, you know, evangelicals, the Pope is only infallible when
9:49
speaking ex cathedra from the seat of Peter on matters of
9:54
faith and morals for the entire of Christendom.

So it's very specific. And that's when the Pope has

that authority to say this is what God's plan is for the
10:04
church and for his people on matters of faith and morals.

What the Pope might say in an interview or what a headline

says about what the Pope said, right, does not mean that that's

infallible. And that's the teaching of the

church. So you have to proceed here with

the the caution of understanding that today more than ever,

confusion can arise because of media, social media also access

to the Pope and Bishop's talking and all these different
10:30
circumstances that are not necessarily official teaching

circumstances. So does that mean, you know,

it's not frustrating when maybe a shepherd, a Bishop or even a
10:39
Pope seems to be uncareful in what they say because it might
10:43
still be confusing for people? Yeah, of course.

And I totally get frustration from some Catholics that there's

needs to be more carefulness. I know a lot of people were
10:52
saying, well, you know, Pope Benedict was so careful.

I mean, the guy was this crazy, amazing theologian who wrote,

and he was very systematic in the way that he thought and the

way that he wrote. So he was always precise with
11:02
what he said. His rhetoric was always very
11:05
toned down. He was always very clear.

We have a different personality of a Pope now.

So I think that also lends to some of the media headlines,

quite frankly, and the confusion.

All right, let's get into the actual document question.

Did the Pope just say that we can bless same sex unions like

their marriages or did the Vatican just say this?

No, absolutely not. In fact, the document actually

specifically says that when it talks about blessing those in a

same sex relationship or a non marital relationship, it's not

talking about the blessing that you give during the sacrament of

marriage in the right of the sacrament of marriage.

So it specifically says these are different categories of

blessings. And I want to I want to read

this from the document. It says rights and prayers that

could create confusion between what constitutes marriage, which

is the exclusive, stable and indissolvable union between a

man and a woman naturally open to the generation of children.

The document is again saying this is what marriage is.

It's always been this way. Marriage is the exclusive,

That has not changed. That will not change.

That's instituted by God himself, and what contradicts it

But Fiducia Supplicants specifically reasserts what

blessing a same sex couple? Then it goes on to say in some

of the language I can understand may seem confusing, but overall

the context is that every single day in Catholic churches across

the country at daily Mass, when you go up to receive communion,

you can go up to receive a blessing.

If you are not disposed for communion, What does that mean?

If you are not a member of the Church yet, So you can't receive

the Eucharist, You haven't received your Sacrament of

Eucharist yet. Or if you are.

You know someone who's in a state of mortal sin, that means

you're in a serious sin that you have not received, you know, not

gone to confession for not received the, the sacrament for

a penance, then you cannot receive Holy Communion.

And so, you know, if you're living, for example, you, you,

you, you're living in effectively adultery because you

divorced your spouse in a valid marriage and then you went and

remarried and you go up, you can get a blessing, but you can't

receive communion. Oh, so the church blesses

sinners. Yeah, the church blesses sinners

every day, myself included. Thanks be to God that we get the

blessing of God. He shines on the, the, the

sinful and the righteous alike that God gives us.

And the priest gives us the blessing, urging us towards

holiness and towards goodness. And before I became Catholic, I

spent a few years on and off attending Masses.

And especially in the year before I became Catholic, I

would go almost daily to Mass and I'd go up to receive a

blessing during the time of Holy Communion.

So I couldn't receive Holy Communion because I wasn't

Catholic yet, but I would go up and and I would receive a

blessing. So the church and priest, part

of their pastoral ministry is to give blessings to everyone who

asks for it indiscriminately. And I think the, the intention

of Fiducia sepulcans, the best of intentions, I would say, is

that we want people, even those living in sinful relationships,

to come and to seek out a blessing, not on the sin, but on

themselves as sinners seeking God's mercy, seeking God's grace

to live a righteous life, even if they're still in their sin.

Right. So I just think that is

ultimately what this document is about is some of the language,

do I wish it was more clear? Some of the language is crystal

clear, by the way. Do I wish some of the other

language about what its blessing means exactly was more crystal

clear? Yes.

But the document does not change marriage, does not change that

sexual sin is a sin. And that's the church's teaching

and does not change that when it when a priest blesses two men

who come up here in a same sex union, you know, the same sex

relationship, he's not blessing and he cannot bless with the

church's authority, their sexual relationship.

That is sin. But he can bless them and hope

and pray in his heart, I'm sure, and in his ministry with them

that they're, you know, anything good in their relationship,

anything good in their friendship can be graceful to

the point where they reject their sin.

They see each other not as sexual partners, but they see

each other as men that maybe can be friends or, you know, see
17:21
each other ultimately in in a brotherhood and leave that

living together in sexual sin and reject that lifestyle.

And I think a lot of priests. Would hope to do.

That, you know, in their ministry of people who struggle

with same sex attraction or who struggle with, you know, an

illicit marriage after a divorce, who struggle with, you

know, any kind of sin, any kind of sin.

So I wanted to call that out. There are some people who are

really upset about this though, saying, you know, listen, it

should have been much more clear.

You know, there's actually a right of blessing for a drug

addicts that specifically tells them to leave their drug

addiction. So what this document should

have said is these are blessings.

And part of the blessing specifically says leave your sin

of being in a same sex sexual relationship.

Leave your sin of being in a premarital same, you know,

premarital heterosexual relationship, whatever it is,

right? Because any sex outside of

marriage, same sex or heterosex is wrong.

Marriage is between a man and a woman and only sex happens, you

know, in the right order in marriage.

Would it have been maybe better if the document had said that?

I mean, maybe again, I'm not God, I'm not the Spirit.

Obviously, I don't understand how God is using, you know, mere

mortals in this work of the Church.

But I can say that the document doesn't change the teaching of

the Church on marriage or sex at all, and that blessings are

given to those persisting in sin and those repentant in their

sin. I mean, that is, that is the way

that the Church is operated for hundreds and hundreds of years.

So one last thing I'll say, and this is a shout out to my friend

But he was recently talking to Ben Shapiro about this, and he's

a Catholic apologist at Catholic Answers.

And he made the comment that, you know, there's still parts

of, say, Latin America where priests refuse to baptize the

children of single mothers because they feel that it's

shameful. And it's somehow, you know,

giving a blessing, you know, an undeserved blessing to the

sinful way that that child was conceived, you know, out of

wedlock. And that's totally wrong.

The church baptizes any child whose parents are willing to

bring that child to baptism, even if the parents are living

in sin, whatever it might be. Now that they want the parents

to not live in sin, they want the child to, you know, be

raised in a, in a real marriage. But they're not going to deny

baptism from a sincere parent seeking baptism and to raise
19:50
their children in the faith because the parent made a
19:52
mistake in how they conceive that baby, right?

So there are some excesses both ways in our church in practice,

right? There's the practice of, you

know, there's Father James Martin who's so pro LGBT

identity that he, I think, misleads people into thinking

that your identity can be your sexual attraction that's

disordered. I think that's a problem.

And I think there's also can be an extreme where we may be shame

or we reject, you know, those that are those that have

committed sin, which is all of us, but particularly, you know,

conceiving, having sex outside of marriage, right?

Conceiving a baby and then seeing that baby somehow is less

than when obviously that's totally not the case.

misunderstanding here. This is not about seeing people

with same sex attraction or living in a same sex

relationship as less than as someone that has to be rejected

as a human being. And I would never do that

personally and the church does not do that.

What the church does in my position as well is that any sex

outside of marriage is wrong. Marriage is between a man and a

woman and that same sex attraction can be a a big thing

that someone has to deal with. It can be actually a a burden

that someone experiences, but that that doesn't define the

identity of that person, making them LGBT and therefore they

must go and live that identity and you know, be, you know, be

take action on their same sex sexual attractions.

So you accept the person, but you see that the person is more

than their sexual attraction, and the person is not doomed to

act out on their sexual attraction.

And that could be a major cross to struggle with a sexual

attraction. That is not part of God's plan

and it's not something that I've experienced personally.

I have close friends who've experienced it, so I'm not going

to pretend that I know all of the struggles that that entails,

but I can. I've seen some of it fairly

close up, but that there's love and there's support and there's

help for that person who's in that struggle and that they are

loved unconditionally by God just as much as me or anyone

else, and that you have the same dignity and the same worth.
