- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. As we approach the end of the
- 0:44book of Luke, we read yet another Gospel account of the
- 0:47climax, the turning point of history, the crucifixion of
- 0:50Jesus Christ, Son of God. Before we discuss it, I want you
- 0:54to just listen to this account and let it sink in.
- 0:57I'll start in verse 33 when they came to the place called the
- 1:01skull, there they crucified him and the criminals, one on the
- 1:05right and the other on the left. But Jesus was saying, Father
- 1:08forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.
- 1:12And they cast lots, dividing up his garments among themselves.
- 1:15And the people stood by looking on, and even the rulers were
- 1:18sneering at him, saying he saved others, let him save himself, if
- 1:22this is the Christ of God, his chosen one.
- 1:25The soldiers also mocked him, coming up to him, offering him
- 1:27sour wine and saying, If you were the king of the Jews, save
- 1:30yourself. Now there was also an
- 1:32inscription above him. This is the king of the Jews.
- 1:35One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse
- 1:38at him, saying, Are you not the Christ, save yourself and us?
- 1:42But the other answered and rebuking him, said, Do you not
- 1:45even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of
- 1:48condemnation? And we indeed are suffering
- 1:51justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds.
- 1:54But this man has done nothing wrong.
- 1:56And he was saying, Jesus, Remember Me when you come in
- 1:59your Kingdom. And he said to him, truly, I say
- 2:02to you today you shall be with me in paradise.
- 2:04It was now about the 6th hour, and darkness fell over the whole
- 2:08land until the 9th hour, because the sun was obscured and the
- 2:11veil of the temple was torn in two.
- 2:14And Jesus crying out with a loud voice said, Father, into your
- 2:17hands I commit my spirit. Having said this, he breathed
- 2:20his last. And when the centurion saw what
- 2:23had happened, he began praising God, saying certainly this man
- 2:26was innocent. And all the crowds who came
- 2:28together for this spectacle, when they observed what had
- 2:31happened, began to return, beating their breasts.
- 2:35And all his acquaintances and the women who accompanied him
- 2:37from Galilee were standing at a distance seeing these things.
- 2:42I want you to take a minute and think about the words spoken by
- 2:44the two criminals dying alongside Jesus.
- 2:47One mocks Jesus, hurling abuse at him, telling him to save
- 2:50himself and them. Meanwhile, the other dying
- 2:53criminal admits that Jesus has done nothing wrong, though he
- 2:56himself and the other criminal are suffering justly.
- 2:59He then entreats Jesus sincerely, saying, Jesus,
- 3:03Remember Me when you come into your Kingdom.
- 3:05Here in his last moments after a life that was marked by
- 3:08sinfulness, he is admitting his guilt and falling on Jesus for
- 3:13mercy. Throughout the book of Luke, we
- 3:16have seen this juxtaposition of responses to Christ.
- 3:19When confronted with the person of Jesus and his claims of
- 3:21authority of being the Son of God, man must make a choice.
- 3:26CS Lewis described that choice this way, He says.
- 3:30I'm trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish
- 3:33thing that people often say about him.
- 3:35That is Christ. I'm ready to accept Jesus as a
- 3:38great moral teacher, but I don't accept his claim to be God.
- 3:42That is the one thing we must not say.
- 3:45A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus
- 3:48said would not be a great moral teacher.
- 3:51He would either be a lunatic on a level with the man who says
- 3:54he's a poached egg, or else he would be the devil of hell.
- 3:58You must make a choice. Either this man was and is the
- 4:02son of God, or else a madman or something worse.
- 4:05You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him
- 4:08as a demon, or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and
- 4:12God. But let us not come up with any
- 4:14patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher.
- 4:17He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to liar,
- 4:23lunatic, or Lord. That is what Lewis says are our
- 4:25options when responding to Christ.
- 4:28In other words, we must either outright reject him or accept
- 4:32him as God Himself and fully submit to Him.
- 4:35There is no in between. And here on the cross, at the
- 4:38place called the Skull, these two dying criminals illustrate
- 4:41just that .1 rejects Christ with insults and mocking jeers, 1
- 4:46submits to Him in humility, and to the first there is no hope
- 4:50offered. He took his last breaths in
- 4:52agony and found himself entering an eternity of even greater
- 4:56agony. The other criminal, though, was
- 4:58different. He calls out to Jesus to
- 5:00remember him, and Jesus responds in grace and mercy and love.
- 5:05He says, truly, I say to you, today you shall be with me in
- 5:08paradise. That man took his last breath
- 5:11and entered paradise. His life of sin and selfishness
- 5:14were covered by the blood of the one who died next to him.
- 5:17And so the choice stands for you and for me.
- 5:20What will we do with Christ? There is no option to abstain.
- 5:25There is no neutral response. Will we submit to Him fully with
- 5:28our whole lives, or will we reject Him?
- 5:31The choice is ours.
