- 3:47Speaker 1: appearance on this show. That's because she makes it happen
- 3:50Speaker 1: and she tells it like it is, and she is
- 3:53Speaker 1: a branding and marketing as they say, Mavin's the CEO
- 3:57Speaker 1: or be your own brand, which is b while it
- 3:59Speaker 1: will be trademarked by her. Is the culmination of two
- 4:02Speaker 1: decades of experience as a marketing executive specializing in branding
- 4:07Speaker 1: and imaging for talents such as Mary J. Blige, Sean P.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Did Combs, Tony Braxton, Lenny Kravitz, Jeral Scott, baby Face,
- 4:16Speaker 1: Later Hathaway, and many more. Please welcome to Money Making Conversations.
- 4:20Speaker 1: The incredible Sheila Coates. Good morning, Good morning. How are
- 4:27Speaker 1: you doing? Sheila? I am blessed. How are you well?
- 4:29Speaker 1: You don't feel good talking to you because you have
- 4:31Speaker 1: that fantastic tone in your voice and you are you
- 4:35Speaker 1: know it's it's it's elegant and intelligence personified. You know
- 4:39Speaker 1: what I'm saying. Flattery will get you. Well, I got to.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I got to. You know the thing about it whenever
- 4:47Speaker 1: I have you on the show, whenever we're talking and uh,
- 4:50Speaker 1: because we have a relationship where we can communicate and
- 4:52Speaker 1: it's all about how we can get better, how we
- 4:55Speaker 1: can um take the next step because there's no you know,
- 4:58Speaker 1: you're never satisfied. I think people tend to believe that
- 5:01Speaker 1: when you reach your goal, it stops, and that's where
- 5:03Speaker 1: they make a major mistake. Correct exactly. Look, you're you're
- 5:07Speaker 1: an example of that personified. You know, how many goals
- 5:11Speaker 1: have you obtained and you keep on moving. I think
- 5:13Speaker 1: life is about learning and constantly bettering yourself and understanding
- 5:17Speaker 1: what you bring to the table. Okay, cool, with that
- 5:20Speaker 1: being said, Be why O B, which is be your
- 5:24Speaker 1: own brand that's been trademarked by you. What is it
- 5:27Speaker 1: all about? So we've got because I got you for
- 5:30Speaker 1: two breaks today, so we can slow it down. We're
- 5:32Speaker 1: gonna get the word out. You know, if we've talked
- 5:34Speaker 1: about how we're gonna eventually create these relationships where you know,
- 5:38Speaker 1: we're gonna do conferences around the country and seminars around
- 5:40Speaker 1: the country, and you're gonna be a major player, and
- 5:42Speaker 1: that please explain to everybody why what is b y
- 5:46Speaker 1: O b okay B while being a nutshell is helping
- 5:50Speaker 1: people understand how to define their uniqueness and why is
- 5:54Speaker 1: that important? Because you need to know your competitive edge.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I'm not the only one doing branding. You're not the
- 5:59Speaker 1: only one who as a radio show. But what you
- 6:02Speaker 1: bring to the table and who you are is what
- 6:04Speaker 1: makes you unique. It separates you from everybody else. So
- 6:07Speaker 1: what I help people do and help companies do is
- 6:11Speaker 1: to find that uniqueness. What makes you you? Why you
- 6:14Speaker 1: You know, we all think we're hot, we all think
- 6:16Speaker 1: we're amazing, but it's something that you bring to the
- 6:19Speaker 1: table that other people don't. It's like your DNA. If
- 6:22Speaker 1: you look at your fingertips, you know the beliefe men
- 6:25Speaker 1: always go to the fingertips and they're close to someone else,
- 6:28Speaker 1: but it's not quite that one line that goes in
- 6:30Speaker 1: a different direction says that that's for Sean McDonald, because
- 6:34Speaker 1: that's dealer coats. The same is true for your brand
- 6:37Speaker 1: and b y l by branding you on who you are,
- 6:41Speaker 1: not what you do, because what will change if you're
- 6:45Speaker 1: branding yourself on being a television writer and then being
- 6:49Speaker 1: you know, a partner with Steve Harvey, then you could
- 6:52Speaker 1: never go into anything else you wanted to do. We're
- 6:55Speaker 1: never branded herself in one lane. So that goes to
- 6:59Speaker 1: the question about multiple streams of income. Yes, and a
- 7:03Speaker 1: lot of people say that, but they don't. There's a
- 7:05Speaker 1: lot of work involved with that. Look, I'm tired right now.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Look and over here trying to beat the faith right
- 7:14Speaker 1: now because I'm tired because when you when you're multiple
- 7:18Speaker 1: streams of income, it's really multiple streams of the lane
- 7:21Speaker 1: that you're good in, right See, you don't do multiple streams.
- 7:25Speaker 1: And I'm a Sheila tried to be a computer science
- 7:28Speaker 1: person and then tried to get in some kind of
- 7:30Speaker 1: technical thing and then did the creative thing. It may
- 7:33Speaker 1: not work for me. But when you look at people
- 7:35Speaker 1: who are great and multiple streams of revenue because they've
- 7:38Speaker 1: mastered their lane, that's that's you know lane, you know,
- 7:43Speaker 1: it's it's And also they understand the multitasking and that's
- 7:47Speaker 1: really the key. And I hear that a lot. You know,
- 7:49Speaker 1: I can only focus on one thing, And when I
- 7:52Speaker 1: hear that, I go, really, that's always you're already telling
- 7:55Speaker 1: yourself that you don't want to accomplish anything other than
- 7:57Speaker 1: what you're doing. And when I'm gonna phone right now,
- 8:01Speaker 1: people just tuned in up. My guess is the CEO
- 8:03Speaker 1: be your own brand. She's the coach. What is the
- 8:06Speaker 1: one of the major mistakes that people make when when
- 8:09Speaker 1: in the marketing in the branding arena because they don't
- 8:12Speaker 1: understand the difference between marketing and branding. Okay, okay, just
- 8:15Speaker 1: let that down. There is a difference between marketing and branding.
- 8:19Speaker 1: That's what you're seeing exactly. Marketing is yelling about who
- 8:23Speaker 1: I am. I'm telling me that. That's that's a billboard
- 8:27Speaker 1: that's putting something out there here, I am here, I
- 8:30Speaker 1: am seeing me. Branding is engagement, influencing the way that
- 8:35Speaker 1: you think, understanding the perception that you want people to
- 8:41Speaker 1: get when they engage with you. See, there's a perception
- 8:44Speaker 1: that I want Rashawan and the listeners to get any
- 8:48Speaker 1: time they hear me speak. I'm clear about that now.
- 8:52Speaker 1: When I market, all I'm saying is here, I am.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Did you see my store? Did you see my business?
- 8:58Speaker 1: You would you come in and buy something from me?
- 9:01Speaker 1: That's not engaging, right, that's just telling right. So so
- 9:06Speaker 1: you're saying, I'm just trying to break it down. Like
- 9:09Speaker 1: I said, I'm pushing you too far too quick on
- 9:11Speaker 1: this thought process. So how would that work if you
- 9:15Speaker 1: Chick fil A they market their sandwich, so they brand services.
- 9:20Speaker 1: That's what they in the quality of their food is
- 9:22Speaker 1: that's that's the difference. Well, the engagement is who they
- 9:25Speaker 1: are and what they stand for and getting you to
- 9:28Speaker 1: understand the kind of sandwich they make. You know, the
- 9:32Speaker 1: kind of sauce that's on that sand how we deliver
- 9:36Speaker 1: that see you, that's engagement. Now, whenever they post a
- 9:40Speaker 1: poster or post a billboard, that's marketing. Yeah, the cow
- 9:45Speaker 1: on TV pointing to the chickens. Didn't you to see
- 9:50Speaker 1: the cow? Remember that time? Remember that when you see
- 9:53Speaker 1: that cow? Think about fil You're engaging me? Is because
- 9:58Speaker 1: you're sharing something is me about your uniqueness and who
- 10:02Speaker 1: you are and why I want that experience because I
- 10:05Speaker 1: read because I wanted to break that down because a
- 10:07Speaker 1: lot of people, because you know, you throw out these
- 10:09Speaker 1: words marketing, you throw out these words branding, but really
- 10:12Speaker 1: the work is in the branding because you can go, yeah,
- 10:15Speaker 1: I can stand on the corner and then you see
- 10:16Speaker 1: this a lot people how these are rotating signs when
- 10:19Speaker 1: they rotate them and you see the signs. So that's
- 10:22Speaker 1: the marketing part. The branding part is when that customer
- 10:25Speaker 1: who sees that sign goes in there to get the
- 10:29Speaker 1: service that you're promoting. Okay, exactly, And it's and it's
- 10:33Speaker 1: that perception. I'm been on perception because people don't understand
- 10:37Speaker 1: the power of perception. If I give you something right now,
- 10:39Speaker 1: let's let's do this. If and you don't even have
- 10:42Speaker 1: to see this, this is just that's on the radio.
- 10:45Speaker 1: But if I say a Corvett, something comes to mind,
- 10:49Speaker 1: car fast car. I say yes. If I said, okay,
- 10:51Speaker 1: so you took it to fast car. Right, So if
- 10:53Speaker 1: I say a red Corvette, become clear, say aad Corvette
- 11:01Speaker 1: with M you see a whole different thing because the
- 11:06Speaker 1: perception is starting to become clearer and clearer and clear.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Because that's the engagement you have with Corvette that is fast,
- 11:13Speaker 1: that is cool, that it's moving. You just think, oh,
- 11:17Speaker 1: I'm barely trying to get there. I'm trying to take
- 11:19Speaker 1: my kids to school. I need to get to work
- 11:22Speaker 1: in that car. Because that's a that's more of a Volvo, right, Yes,
- 11:27Speaker 1: it's the experience that that car is wanting you to have.
- 11:30Speaker 1: That's why I tell people there's thousands of car company,
- 11:33Speaker 1: but every time you see one, they don't talk about
- 11:35Speaker 1: what they have in common. They talk about what makes
- 11:37Speaker 1: them different. That is so true, and that is the
- 11:40Speaker 1: marketing and branding difference. So let me ask you this.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Let me just ask you to because we're going to
- 11:45Speaker 1: break in a minute. I want you to answer this.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Fore we go to break. What what benefits does Sheila
- 11:52Speaker 1: Coach bring to a business or to an individual? Can
- 11:55Speaker 1: we're going next week we gonna talk about your webinars?
- 11:57Speaker 1: What is that? What's the benefits? It's uh. If it's
- 12:01Speaker 1: a company, I do a lot of branding of employees
- 12:03Speaker 1: and the benefit of that is ultimately companies who want
- 12:06Speaker 1: to increase their revenues. Because when I when my employees
- 12:09Speaker 1: feel better and do better, they produce better. They don't
- 12:14Speaker 1: bring me in because they like me. They're looking for
- 12:16Speaker 1: ways to uh create better teams, create better leaders, have
- 12:21Speaker 1: different kinds of teams. Because all teams can be made
- 12:23Speaker 1: of a quarterback, then there will be nobody to throw to.
- 12:26Speaker 1: So you gotta understand your uniqueness and what you bring
- 12:29Speaker 1: to that team. So that's why companies bring me in
- 12:31Speaker 1: because at the end of the day, when their employees
- 12:33Speaker 1: feel better about themselves and are engaged and who they are,
- 12:37Speaker 1: companies make more money. Individuals preing me and and I've
- 12:41Speaker 1: worked with the first Lady of Bermuda, numerous artists. Just
- 12:46Speaker 1: did a piece with the Atlanta Hawks and Monica. What
- 12:48Speaker 1: we're doing with that particular platform is that what do
- 12:52Speaker 1: you bring to the table that's different than the person
- 12:55Speaker 1: that was there before you, because again, you're not only one,
- 12:58Speaker 1: but when you step into that arena, what do you
- 13:01Speaker 1: want people to know about you? And how do you
- 13:03Speaker 1: want to make them feel so that when they leave there,
- 13:06Speaker 1: they're talking about you in a way that you wanted
- 13:09Speaker 1: them to talk about you. That's the engagement. So it
- 13:12Speaker 1: depends on if it's an individual, if it's a company.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I have a different company right now that I'm working with,
- 13:17Speaker 1: and I do all of their brand strategy for their
- 13:19Speaker 1: events because while they spend a lot of money, people
- 13:23Speaker 1: don't necessarily know them because they're marketing, not in not branding,
- 13:28Speaker 1: because they don't create the engagement. So what I'm doing
- 13:30Speaker 1: for them is helping them strategize why are we doing
- 13:34Speaker 1: this event? What's the return on the investment on this event?
- 13:37Speaker 1: And what do you want people to feel when they
- 13:40Speaker 1: come to this event. Okay, we listen to she to
- 13:44Speaker 1: coach the CEO of Be Your Brand B y O B.
- 13:48Speaker 1: We'll be back with more money making conversations. Don't go nowhere.
- 13:51Speaker 1: We're gonna find out about her webinars and also more
- 13:54Speaker 1: information on how you can be successful in the world
- 13:57Speaker 1: of marketing and branding. She's especial. It's just every time
- 14:00Speaker 1: on the show. So you know I'm bringing it back
- 14:02Speaker 1: and having full or five times on the show. Be
- 14:04Speaker 1: right back with more money making conversations. Huh This Sean
- 14:07Speaker 1: McDonald for Shawn McDonald, back with more money making conversations.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Welcome to the show and show it's created to get
- 14:14Speaker 1: provide you with information so you can win in your
- 14:18Speaker 1: personal life and then your business life. That's what money
- 14:21Speaker 1: making conversations on the mine on the show today right
- 14:24Speaker 1: now on the hole, I'm about to bring it back up.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Is the CEO or Be your Own Brand. That's be
- 14:29Speaker 1: why I'll be she look coates. She like, welcome back
- 14:33Speaker 1: to the show. Thank you so much. I was laughing
- 14:36Speaker 1: to myself because you can tell I'm passionate about branding
- 14:39Speaker 1: and marketing. I was like, let's just slow down because
- 14:42Speaker 1: see a lot of people, it's not so much you.
- 14:44Speaker 1: You know, you don't need to slow down people, it's
- 14:47Speaker 1: energy to get you there. You know. Sometimes you know,
- 14:50Speaker 1: I you know, I've changed my tone on the show.
- 14:53Speaker 1: I used to be moving to one hundred miles an
- 14:55Speaker 1: hour because I was afraid that people wouldn't get what
- 14:57Speaker 1: I was trying to say or wouldn't understand my commitment,
- 15:01Speaker 1: and a lot of people confused, and I'm just like,
- 15:04Speaker 1: you know, what you're saying is fantastic. Just trust yourself.
- 15:07Speaker 1: And that's what I'm doing with myself. I'm starting to
- 15:09Speaker 1: trust myself more on the radio and when I talk
- 15:12Speaker 1: to people, because you know, you want people react to
- 15:14Speaker 1: you when you speak, and then some people just stat
- 15:18Speaker 1: you and you're like, you know, okay, did you hear
- 15:20Speaker 1: what I just said? You know, if you go around
- 15:23Speaker 1: the corner, there's an opportunity and a lot of people
- 15:25Speaker 1: just will slowly walk around the corner because they don't
- 15:27Speaker 1: question you. And so when I hear that passion in
- 15:30Speaker 1: your voice, it's it's just you're just letting everybody know
- 15:33Speaker 1: there's opportunity over them their heels. Yes it is, Yes
- 15:37Speaker 1: it is, and that you can do anything when you
- 15:40Speaker 1: understand how powerful you are what you bring to the table.
- 15:44Speaker 1: I mean, you know, you know my journey. I was
- 15:46Speaker 1: an executive in the music business for years, you know,
- 15:49Speaker 1: got to the level of CMO, and I chose to quit.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Now I will say that the days I'm like, what
- 15:55Speaker 1: did you do? When you know that I didn't brand
- 15:59Speaker 1: myself and didn't put my blindness so to speak, on
- 16:02Speaker 1: being an industry executive, then I realized I can do
- 16:06Speaker 1: this for myself. I can do this with others. If
- 16:09Speaker 1: I was able to brand celebrities, I can definitely brand individuals.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I can go into corporations because who I am is
- 16:18Speaker 1: who I am. It wasn't based on what I was doing. Now,
- 16:22Speaker 1: with that being said, these webinars that you do which
- 16:25Speaker 1: allows people to communicate with you, please explain why you
- 16:30Speaker 1: started them, how one can be involved with him? And
- 16:35Speaker 1: it's your floor because he the first break was kind
- 16:37Speaker 1: of like my break, you know, I ain't have it
- 16:40Speaker 1: was I asked, as you not one question that you
- 16:44Speaker 1: sent me because all by rash because you know, you
- 16:47Speaker 1: know I know that you know what we can see.
- 16:49Speaker 1: I have a different insight on your on what people
- 16:51Speaker 1: want to say and here, and you have a talent.
- 16:54Speaker 1: That's sometimes I want to dig a little deeper. Now,
- 16:56Speaker 1: this break is still equally important because you know it's
- 16:59Speaker 1: about why is personal branding important? Which leads to your webinars? Correct, yes, yes,
- 17:06Speaker 1: And I'm just starting the webinars for individuals. I do
- 17:09Speaker 1: webinars for corporate America because a lot of the time
- 17:11Speaker 1: they have e learning. A lot of corporations have um
- 17:15Speaker 1: universities and they allow their employees to be able to
- 17:19Speaker 1: do learning and training on their own. But my thought was,
- 17:22Speaker 1: how does the average person When I say average, don't
- 17:25Speaker 1: take that as less than but the regular person, entrepreneur,
- 17:29Speaker 1: the person who's trying to pick college classes, how do
- 17:32Speaker 1: they understand their uniqueness? How does an entrepreneur who's launching
- 17:36Speaker 1: a business, but there's twenty businesses like there's find what
- 17:39Speaker 1: makes them unique? So that's how I started during the
- 17:42Speaker 1: individual webinars, and so we are launching one that's the
- 17:46Speaker 1: generic one. When I said meaning that you can no
- 17:49Speaker 1: matter if you're an entrepreneur or a college student, a
- 17:52Speaker 1: customer service rev work at a company, you will walk
- 17:56Speaker 1: away with an understanding of your uniqueness and the power
- 17:59Speaker 1: it takes to be a brand. And that's called everybody's
- 18:02Speaker 1: a brand. And for Ard Sean McDonald, because your audience
- 18:06Speaker 1: and you have been so good to me, and this
- 18:07Speaker 1: is my third time, then we are going to do it.
- 18:10Speaker 1: If you sign up today or before you get it
- 18:13Speaker 1: out a discount. Uh So, if you go to the
- 18:16Speaker 1: webinar now and my website right now, which is b
- 18:19Speaker 1: y O B unlimited dot com b y O B
- 18:22Speaker 1: unlimited dot com, you'll see a button up there for
- 18:26Speaker 1: a webinar. But the webinar is really to get you
- 18:29Speaker 1: to understand how to speak volumes without saying a word.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Now here's we really do. Here's there's the important that
- 18:35Speaker 1: I need a banner from you because now Money Making
- 18:37Speaker 1: Conversation has his own Facebook page. We have twenty six
- 18:40Speaker 1: thousand followers on our Facebook page we have and we
- 18:44Speaker 1: have a Twitter account. So please send me your banner
- 18:47Speaker 1: and I will post it today. Dale Henderson, he's the
- 18:50Speaker 1: exact on the hounds the social media on the Money
- 18:53Speaker 1: Making Conversation page and so please send us today because
- 18:56Speaker 1: I know that seeing it here is only one spot
- 18:59Speaker 1: to get there. You have to have several locations where
- 19:02Speaker 1: you need to communicate the value of what you're trying
- 19:05Speaker 1: to bring to the table. And that's all. I'm just
- 19:06Speaker 1: telling people that this platform was created for you. If
- 19:10Speaker 1: platform was created to be able to give you an
- 19:13Speaker 1: opportunity to market and to brand your vision. So she
- 19:17Speaker 1: has an idea that she's created. I'm just letting you
- 19:19Speaker 1: know is that this is what people The major mistake
- 19:22Speaker 1: that people make. There are certain platforms that you can
- 19:24Speaker 1: go to because they have millions of people streaming and
- 19:28Speaker 1: all these things. That is not this platform right now.
- 19:30Speaker 1: I want to get to that platform now. So that
- 19:33Speaker 1: means that when she says it here, I gotta put
- 19:36Speaker 1: it elsewhere, several different locations so I can start catching
- 19:39Speaker 1: eyeballs to generate the traffic that she wants. She's promoting
- 19:43Speaker 1: it on my show, but she's also prominent promoting other avenues.
- 19:47Speaker 1: And that's why it's important that I say that to anybody,
- 19:49Speaker 1: because see what happens there. People everybody used the word
- 19:52Speaker 1: they want a viral video. You know, that's the big
- 19:54Speaker 1: that's the big craze. Now, that's why you see people
- 19:57Speaker 1: jumping into baseball games and running around the field because
- 20:00Speaker 1: they want that video, and they're gonna take that video
- 20:03Speaker 1: and post it on their personal social media so they
- 20:05Speaker 1: can go viral. Or you see, people'll be stopping traffic
- 20:08Speaker 1: and playing ping pong right at the red light. They're
- 20:11Speaker 1: trying to create viral videos. I don't know what that
- 20:14Speaker 1: means because of the fact that the traction you're trying
- 20:17Speaker 1: to create other than you just being stupid for that moment.
- 20:19Speaker 1: What we're trying to do over here is a professional
- 20:21Speaker 1: platform where you can gain information and exposure. And that's
- 20:25Speaker 1: all she's trying to do with these webinars that are
- 20:27Speaker 1: one on one in the sense that they're personal and
- 20:30Speaker 1: not corporate. Is that correct? Exactly, the one on one
- 20:33Speaker 1: webinar so that you can get personalized information and walk away.
- 20:37Speaker 1: My thing is, I don't want to hear something and
- 20:39Speaker 1: still don't know what to do after I heard it.
- 20:41Speaker 1: I promise you, when you hear this, you will have
- 20:44Speaker 1: immediately learn something to impact your life. Right then you're
- 20:49Speaker 1: gonna you're gonna be able to go, Okay, I get
- 20:51Speaker 1: it now. Right after that call, I can do X,
- 20:54Speaker 1: Y and Z in my business and my career and
- 20:56Speaker 1: my personal life. That's going to change my uniqueness and
- 21:00Speaker 1: helped me understand my competitive edge. And the other thing
- 21:02Speaker 1: that I'd like to say about conversations like this is
- 21:05Speaker 1: that I don't understand why people don't jump on the
- 21:07Speaker 1: phone because you're getting free information. Like, if somebody asked
- 21:11Speaker 1: me something right now, I'm gonna share that with them.
- 21:13Speaker 1: If they asked with you, you're gonna share it with
- 21:16Speaker 1: You can't pay me to do this, and I can't
- 21:20Speaker 1: do this for free anywhere else. So if you're listening,
- 21:23Speaker 1: I don't understand why you're not asking questions. You know,
- 21:26Speaker 1: I do know that it takes a many for you
- 21:27Speaker 1: to grasp your thoughts. But if I'm an entrepreneur, if
- 21:30Speaker 1: I'm somebody trying to find out what's my competitive edge,
- 21:33Speaker 1: if I'm a college student and I'm not sure exactly
- 21:36Speaker 1: what lane I should go in on how to project myself,
- 21:38Speaker 1: I would be on the phone at money making conversations. Well,
- 21:42Speaker 1: thank you for that. That marketing because when they come
- 21:44Speaker 1: over to me, guess what, I'm gonna start branding my
- 21:46Speaker 1: behind off, because that's what this is all about. And
- 21:49Speaker 1: I really you know the thing about it, when you
- 21:51Speaker 1: try to create change because it was really interesting. You
- 21:53Speaker 1: you know, like I said, you know, I have many
- 21:56Speaker 1: shades of my life. You know, my degree is in mathematics.
- 21:59Speaker 1: At work for I bem and left. I been to
- 22:01Speaker 1: be a stand up comic. Then I became a touring comedian,
- 22:05Speaker 1: very successful to the Death Comedy Jam, opened to Comedy Club,
- 22:08Speaker 1: started writing television, writing television shows. Eventually managed Steve Harvey
- 22:13Speaker 1: and that took me to a whole different stratosphere. And
- 22:16Speaker 1: like when you are CMO, when I made the decision
- 22:19Speaker 1: and to to start building my brand, that's a difficult
- 22:23Speaker 1: transition because you have to figure out who you are.
- 22:26Speaker 1: That's really the key element. Because I spent sixteen years
- 22:31Speaker 1: managing Steve and building his brand to a tremendous global perspective.
- 22:35Speaker 1: But along the way, who was Rashan McDonald. And so
- 22:40Speaker 1: this whole year I spent time trying to figure out
- 22:44Speaker 1: who ra Sean McDonald's so I can convey the message
- 22:47Speaker 1: and so I can be consistent. And that's what this
- 22:49Speaker 1: show is all about. That's why I bring you on
- 22:51Speaker 1: the show, because you truly understand who you are. Rashan McDonald,
- 22:56Speaker 1: after said, is still seeking that journey and that journey
- 22:59Speaker 1: is the powerful journey because along the way, I'm gonna
- 23:02Speaker 1: give you information. I'm gonna give you opportunity to speak
- 23:05Speaker 1: to people that you will normally speak to for free,
- 23:07Speaker 1: like you're speaking to her right now for free. That's
- 23:10Speaker 1: all she's saying. If you, if you see her in
- 23:13Speaker 1: a room, she's been paid to do that. And that's why,
- 23:17Speaker 1: and that's the blessing of this opportunity. When I give
- 23:20Speaker 1: out the number to call money making conversation. I remember
- 23:23Speaker 1: this guy called one time. It was so funny and
- 23:25Speaker 1: he said, he said, are you for real? I said,
- 23:29Speaker 1: he said, are you for real? I said, what do
- 23:31Speaker 1: you mean? He said, I can't believe you on the
- 23:33Speaker 1: radio talking like this. He said, you like the Black
- 23:38Speaker 1: Moses because you're leading us in the direction nobody has
- 23:41Speaker 1: ever led us before. And that's basically what you're saying
- 23:44Speaker 1: right now. Rashan McDonald is doing a unique opportunity. And
- 23:49Speaker 1: if you don't take advantage of the unique opportunity, somebody
- 23:51Speaker 1: else gonna charge you. And I can assure you they
- 23:54Speaker 1: will not get the information that I'm giving to your
- 23:57Speaker 1: every money on money making conversations and not happen. And
- 24:00Speaker 1: it's it's so funny that you would have been given
- 24:02Speaker 1: that title as or that batter of Moses when I
- 24:05Speaker 1: was in the music But it's a couple of the
- 24:07Speaker 1: people who used to work with me started calling me
- 24:09Speaker 1: Mama Moses, and I really, you know, like she'll every
- 24:12Speaker 1: time we turn around, you're trying to take the people
- 24:14Speaker 1: over to the other side. You're trying to help the
- 24:16Speaker 1: artists get over here. You're trying to help your staff
- 24:19Speaker 1: get more money. And I say that to say because
- 24:21Speaker 1: when that's really who you are, even though you might
- 24:24Speaker 1: fight that, sometimes it's who you are. You if you
- 24:28Speaker 1: like helping people, and I and like you when you
- 24:31Speaker 1: were doing the thing with Steed, it was helping somebody
- 24:35Speaker 1: you felt good and helping somebody get to the platform.
- 24:37Speaker 1: When I was in the industry, all I looked at
- 24:39Speaker 1: it as I'm helping an artist attain their dreams. I'm
- 24:42Speaker 1: helping some young person who works on my team attain
- 24:45Speaker 1: what they want to do. So when I do this,
- 24:47Speaker 1: it's really just an extension of who I am. That's
- 24:50Speaker 1: what I'm saying. When you understand who you are and
- 24:52Speaker 1: why you do it, some days I don't even like it.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Something's gonna be mad. I'm like, why do I even
- 24:56Speaker 1: want to help somebody? Why? It's because it's who I am.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Two things, two things, where we get out of here now?
- 25:03Speaker 1: I need that website one more time, Yes, sir, let's
- 25:06Speaker 1: one more time. Www. Dot B y O B. That
- 25:11Speaker 1: doesn't stand for britting your own bulls, that's be your

- 25:48Speaker 1: ladies and gentlemen, um. The whole purpose of money making
- 25:51Speaker 1: conversation is spread the word of opportunity through entrepreneurship, and
- 25:56Speaker 1: entrepreneurship doesn't mean business. It means life. It means taking
- 26:00Speaker 1: your brand and marking it to another level so everybody
- 26:04Speaker 1: is aware of who you are when you walk in
- 26:05Speaker 1: the room. Sheila Coach as usual, you've been fantastic. Uh, congratulations,

- 26:54Speaker 1: nine two. That's eight three two three zero five five
- 26:57Speaker 1: nine two. My next guest is a graduate, a prod
- 27:01Speaker 1: graduate of Howard University. After she held many jobs, and
- 27:05Speaker 1: one of them was working in feature film development at
- 27:07Speaker 1: Fox Searchlight Pictures. She is now the executive producer of
- 27:11Speaker 1: the highest successful documentary on own network. That's Oprah's network.
- 27:16Speaker 1: It's called Black Love. Please work on the money making conversations, Cody,
- 27:20Speaker 1: Elaine Oliver, how are you doing? I'm great? What it was?
- 27:24Speaker 1: It was that in? It was that intro? Big enough
- 27:26Speaker 1: for you? Because you know you're rising star. You're rising star.
- 27:30Speaker 1: I gotta make sure I keep you rising, keep your rising.
- 27:35Speaker 1: I appreciate that, and you got it. I am definitely
- 27:37Speaker 1: a very proud graduate of Howard University. I know, it's
- 27:41Speaker 1: it's interesting. There's so many people just getting you know,
- 27:44Speaker 1: there's so many people in the industry. You know, I've
- 27:46Speaker 1: been in the industry with twenty years in l A
- 27:49Speaker 1: and that come out of that Howard University camp. What's
- 27:52Speaker 1: what's going on there? Do they focus on entertainment? What
- 27:55Speaker 1: tell me a little bit about that that you went
- 27:57Speaker 1: to Howard and what what what? How it did help
- 28:00Speaker 1: you be successful to this point in your life from
- 28:02Speaker 1: Howard University. So to be perfectly on a Howard University
- 28:06Speaker 1: was home to me. I mean, I'm from Fort Worth, Texas,
- 28:09Speaker 1: but my whole family went to Howard and so growing
- 28:12Speaker 1: up I've spent a lot of time in dc US
- 28:14Speaker 1: in a lot of time at Howard. I certainly had
- 28:16Speaker 1: a choice because my sister went to Hampton, Like, it
- 28:18Speaker 1: wasn't like, oh, you have to go to Howard. But
- 28:20Speaker 1: for me, it just always felt like home. So I
- 28:24Speaker 1: would say that was a big part of why I
- 28:25Speaker 1: went there, in addition to the fact that I had
- 28:26Speaker 1: gone to predominantly white schools my whole life. So for me,
- 28:29Speaker 1: it was like I need this, I need to be
- 28:33Speaker 1: with black people. That was important to me UM at
- 28:35Speaker 1: that time in my life. And and then I would
- 28:38Speaker 1: say as far as successful people coming from Howard, besides
- 28:42Speaker 1: Howard choosing the best in the bradest, of course, I
- 28:45Speaker 1: would say that Howard really builds us up to be
- 28:48Speaker 1: strong individuals, and specifically strong Black people, to be confident
- 28:53Speaker 1: in what we're doing. And so when you go into
- 28:56Speaker 1: whatever profession that is, whether that's entertainment or teaching or business. UM,
- 29:01Speaker 1: there's just a mindset of being really comfortable with who
- 29:05Speaker 1: you are and and what's important to you, what messages
- 29:09Speaker 1: are important to you, and you bring that into whatever
- 29:12Speaker 1: you're doing. That's awesome. That's awesome. Before we're going to
- 29:15Speaker 1: further you know, I got into the Howard conversation because
- 29:17Speaker 1: on my show, I'll just become engaged with Maya interviews
- 29:21Speaker 1: real quick. Please explain everybody exactly what the documentary of
- 29:25Speaker 1: Black Love is and then we're gonna go in more details.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Absolutely so. Black Love is a four part docuseries that
- 29:32Speaker 1: aired on own UM throughout September. UM. They're still on
- 29:35Speaker 1: the app and the website if you want to catch it. UM.
- 29:38Speaker 1: And Black Love was for my husband and I. We
- 29:41Speaker 1: did it together. UM. It was interviewing black couples on
- 29:45Speaker 1: what it takes to make a marriage work for the
- 29:47Speaker 1: wrong haul. UM. There's no secret. We knew that, we UM,
- 29:52Speaker 1: but we wanted to have that conversation number one because
- 29:55Speaker 1: we needed it. I grew up the child of divorce
- 29:58Speaker 1: parents talking. You grew up without his parents being married,
- 30:01Speaker 1: and so we didn't see those relationships in our household.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Here we are too married people trying to figure out
- 30:06Speaker 1: what that means, like what does that look like every day?
- 30:09Speaker 1: And in addition to that, UM, I think a lot
- 30:11Speaker 1: of us are going up that way for various reasons.
- 30:14Speaker 1: You know, the data says that over seventy black children
- 30:17Speaker 1: are growing up the single parent homes. And that doesn't
- 30:19Speaker 1: necessarily mean they don't know them mother and their father,
- 30:21Speaker 1: just means they're not married, they're not in the same household.
- 30:23Speaker 1: And so when you set out and you try to
- 30:25Speaker 1: build a life with somebody and you don't really know
- 30:27Speaker 1: how to do that, um, it's really hard. It's already
- 30:31Speaker 1: hard to be married. But take the fact that there's
- 30:33Speaker 1: no rule book, there's no use, no no plan, no
- 30:37Speaker 1: no mentors. Right, and plus you had no you had
- 30:40Speaker 1: no example of that, That's what you're saying. You and
- 30:43Speaker 1: your husband had no example of this looking at uh,
- 30:48Speaker 1: you know, two parent household because it never existed for you, right,
- 30:52Speaker 1: And so we knew that we weren't alone. We knew
- 30:54Speaker 1: that more people would want to hear that conversation. And also,
- 30:57Speaker 1: no matter what stage of the relationship you're in, I
- 30:59Speaker 1: think it's as whether you're single as they say single
- 31:02Speaker 1: as a dollar bill, or whether you're engaged or wherever
- 31:05Speaker 1: you are twenty years in. It helps to see other
- 31:09Speaker 1: people going through things and going, oh, okay, I could
- 31:12Speaker 1: deal with that, or hey, that's like my personality. I
- 31:15Speaker 1: can see you know how I can be difficult that time,
- 31:17Speaker 1: And so our hope was that each of us as
- 31:20Speaker 1: black people, can see ourselves in it. Okay, let's let's
- 31:22Speaker 1: go to the business side of this conversation because a
- 31:25Speaker 1: lot of people got a good idea. This is a
- 31:27Speaker 1: good idea, correct, Cody, that's a good idea. You said
- 31:31Speaker 1: around and you you told other people about this good idea, right,
- 31:35Speaker 1: and they kind of looked at you like you was crazy. Right. Yeah,
- 31:38Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know. So how does a
- 31:41Speaker 1: good idea that some people have told you, yeah, I
- 31:45Speaker 1: get back with you, but you weren't waiting on. You
- 31:47Speaker 1: got tired of waiting on to get back with you
- 31:49Speaker 1: for sure? How did you take it to the next stage?
- 31:52Speaker 1: Because that's what people want to hear. This is this,
- 31:53Speaker 1: this is this Hollywood story that nobody they just see
- 31:56Speaker 1: the final results and they also don't know that sometimes
- 31:59Speaker 1: and take years to get it from the idea to
- 32:03Speaker 1: this point. Correct, Yes, it does. So I would say
- 32:06Speaker 1: that the first thing is just keep moving, don't wait
- 32:10Speaker 1: on anybody. So there's that, and that's no matter what
- 32:14Speaker 1: it is you're doing TV or building a business or
- 32:16Speaker 1: whatever it is. Um And I would say that was
- 32:19Speaker 1: hard for me. I just want to be completely transparent.
- 32:21Speaker 1: That was hard for me, you know, because you don't
- 32:23Speaker 1: make money from an idea. You don't make money building
- 32:27Speaker 1: an idea. You don't make money until sometimes ever, but
- 32:31Speaker 1: you don't. You don't. It doesn't turn results until much
- 32:34Speaker 1: later down the line. So yeah, I'm working at box
- 32:37Speaker 1: search side, I'm working at other places. I have income.
- 32:40Speaker 1: I don't necessarily want to stop what I'm doing to
- 32:43Speaker 1: build this thing that won't yield results for a while.
- 32:46Speaker 1: Um So it did take a push, um definitely from
- 32:48Speaker 1: my husband when we met, to to really move things along,
- 32:51Speaker 1: because this is an idea I had for a long time.
- 32:54Speaker 1: So it's idea you have for a long time. How
- 32:58Speaker 1: did it come about? Yeah, so around two thousand seven,
- 33:03Speaker 1: the media was portraying this black marriage crisis. Holo holo, Holo,
- 33:07Speaker 1: holo hold on, she said, two thousand and seven Ladies
- 33:10Speaker 1: and Gentleman. It aired on on Network in September. Okay,
- 33:17Speaker 1: just let you guys know that a lot of people
- 33:18Speaker 1: think these journeys happen overnight. They don't understand that there's
- 33:23Speaker 1: a lot of tears, there's a lot of frustrations, a
- 33:25Speaker 1: lot of setback, and sometimes when you kick off the
- 33:28Speaker 1: vision it's just an idea that you pitching. Continue with
- 33:32Speaker 1: your story. That happened two thousand and seven, ten years
- 33:35Speaker 1: Yes it did. That's when it came to me and
- 33:37Speaker 1: I um with with the media portraying this black marriage crisis.
- 33:41Speaker 1: It felt very as a single woman, it felt like
- 33:43Speaker 1: a dire situation. It felt like the odd word getst us.
- 33:46Speaker 1: The divorce rate is high. The media is telling me
- 33:48Speaker 1: Black people can't stay married being married, They're getting married
- 33:52Speaker 1: later in life. It's at all and other ethnicities. And
- 33:56Speaker 1: right after that, the Obamas were less in the office,
- 33:58Speaker 1: and everyone's going, oh, that's love, this is beautiful. They're amazing.
- 34:01Speaker 1: They're so connected and perfect for each other. And we're
- 34:05Speaker 1: looking at these people like and they're amazing. But we
- 34:09Speaker 1: need more than just that one example. So I knew
- 34:12Speaker 1: at that time I wanted to create a place where
- 34:14Speaker 1: black love stories live. And the first thing that I
- 34:17Speaker 1: did then was I went um because remember, my parents
- 34:21Speaker 1: were divorced. I mean most of them, but that doesn't
- 34:23Speaker 1: automatically mean this, but most of their friends were divorced. Like,
- 34:26Speaker 1: I didn't really have examples to go to and say,
- 34:28Speaker 1: can I tell your story? So I had to find
- 34:31Speaker 1: couples that would share their stories with me. And so
- 34:33Speaker 1: I went on a little trip um back then to
- 34:37Speaker 1: collect some stories, talk to people, see what people would
- 34:39Speaker 1: share with me. Um. And at that time, my idea
- 34:42Speaker 1: was a coffee table book. It wasn't even a documentary. Um.
- 34:46Speaker 1: So it had to evolve. And the evolution like, right now,
- 34:51Speaker 1: the temple has to be married at least ten years. Correct, Yes,
- 34:54Speaker 1: that was always the case. There was always together. They
- 34:57Speaker 1: had to be together at least ten years because you
- 35:00Speaker 1: wanted them to have experiences to draw on. They didn't
- 35:03Speaker 1: have to be married that long, but they had to
- 35:04Speaker 1: be together at least that amount of time. So we're
- 35:06Speaker 1: really talking about what they've gone through to get where
- 35:08Speaker 1: they are. So so the so, the the news story,
- 35:11Speaker 1: then the Obama election, and you have this perfect African
- 35:16Speaker 1: American couple sitting in the White House that inspired you
- 35:19Speaker 1: to say, you know something, this story is not is normal,
- 35:23Speaker 1: and we should make it normal, should not make it unique.
- 35:27Speaker 1: And when you go when you went out there, now
- 35:29Speaker 1: now now we're now we're moving, let me I might
- 35:31Speaker 1: ask you this. Of course you do you have an
- 35:32Speaker 1: agent right now? I don't, but my husband does. And
- 35:35Speaker 1: full disclosure. So that was very helpful, very helpful because
- 35:38Speaker 1: of because you know, that really helps. And let's asking people,
- 35:42Speaker 1: I'm just using your platform because hopefully you come on
- 35:46Speaker 1: my show many many times, because I want to be
- 35:49Speaker 1: able to let your story be told in your brain.
- 35:51Speaker 1: And you're gonna have other great projects because guess what
- 35:54Speaker 1: this project was is a hit. If you if you
- 35:57Speaker 1: google this is black Love, it's gonna say hit, it's
- 36:01Speaker 1: gonna say high ratings on their own network. So she
- 36:04Speaker 1: may have faux but foulk more comment somewhere else she
- 36:07Speaker 1: might do before, but more more love is coming to
- 36:12Speaker 1: her from a financial definitely. And that's and a lot
- 36:15Speaker 1: of times a lot of people think they need an agent.
- 36:17Speaker 1: It's really balls down to who you know in her situation,
- 36:21Speaker 1: I say something to. So we actually put the whole
- 36:25Speaker 1: thing together. We did all of the work without the agency,
- 36:28Speaker 1: so the agency came into play when it was time
- 36:31Speaker 1: to pitch, and really not even pitch. We actually shot
- 36:36Speaker 1: and edited the first episode. We shot all the interviews,
- 36:39Speaker 1: and we edited the full first episode, and then we
- 36:42Speaker 1: did the treatment for the rest so any network that
- 36:45Speaker 1: was looking at that knew exactly what it was. We
- 36:47Speaker 1: had put it together. There was really no questions. You
- 36:50Speaker 1: see what I'm saying. It was very thorough. UM. So
- 36:53Speaker 1: the agency came into play when it was like, Hey,
- 36:55Speaker 1: this is what we have. Can y'all open the doors.
- 36:59Speaker 1: Can y'all fitness to your network um, your various networks, um,
- 37:03Speaker 1: and we'll see who wants it. So I think that's
- 37:06Speaker 1: really important for your audience because, like I said, just
- 37:09Speaker 1: do the work. Do the work, make it thorough. That
- 37:13Speaker 1: leaves no questions unanswered before they're even asked. You have
- 37:18Speaker 1: to think of what those questions are going to be,
- 37:20Speaker 1: and you answer them and your proposal or whatever it
- 37:23Speaker 1: is for your business, and then let people say, yeah,
- 37:25Speaker 1: your name, I love it. You said a lot of things. Proposal,
- 37:28Speaker 1: you said, business plan, even creatively, even in the film
- 37:33Speaker 1: and TV business, there has to be a plan. And
- 37:37Speaker 1: I love the fact that you understand that and you're
- 37:39Speaker 1: willing to share that with my listeners and and the
- 37:42Speaker 1: people who watch on my Facebook page, and also that
- 37:44Speaker 1: it replays on our Heart Radio podcasts under Business Finance.
- 37:48Speaker 1: And the great thing about this is that I, if
- 37:51Speaker 1: you don't mind, I want to bring you back into
- 37:53Speaker 1: the next break so we can talk I'm on the
- 37:54Speaker 1: phone with Cody Oliver. She's the executive producer of the
- 37:58Speaker 1: hit TV show on the All On network. I'm gonna
- 38:00Speaker 1: keep saying it for you, Cody, the hit Black Love.
- 38:04Speaker 1: She'd be right back if you want to call a
- 38:06Speaker 1: three two five, five nine two. We're gonna find out
- 38:09Speaker 1: more about what type of couples is she looking for?
- 38:12Speaker 1: Is she focused on celebrities? Okay? What makes all these
- 38:15Speaker 1: stories unique? Why would I get tired looking at Black Love?
- 38:18Speaker 1: She's gonna tell us why you won't get tired and
- 38:20Speaker 1: why Black Love will run forever because Cody Black is
- 38:24Speaker 1: making money cool. Welcome back to Money Making Conversations. This
- 38:27Speaker 1: is Rashan McDonald's the host of Money Making Conversations. It's
- 38:30Speaker 1: a show that provides you with information on how you
- 38:33Speaker 1: can win in your business and personal life. On the show.
- 38:37Speaker 1: On the phone right now, I have the executive producer.
- 38:39Speaker 1: I want to see director to director to can I
- 38:41Speaker 1: at that time look to you. Cody. She's executive producer
- 38:44Speaker 1: and director of the hit TV show on On called
- 38:48Speaker 1: Black Love. Teen years ago. She came up with this
- 38:51Speaker 1: idea in two thousand and seven and it aired on
- 38:54Speaker 1: on in the month of septem It was four episodes.
- 38:57Speaker 1: It's called a documentary. It's about black love from from
- 39:01Speaker 1: just everyday perspective. But she wants to make sure that
- 39:04Speaker 1: everybody understands not just it's not it's that they that
- 39:08Speaker 1: the Obama couple that was out there was night unique.
- 39:13Speaker 1: There are a lot of people dealing with these same
- 39:14Speaker 1: issues and surviving and the relationship had to be together
- 39:18Speaker 1: for at least ten years. They have to be married
- 39:21Speaker 1: for ten years, but they had to be together for
- 39:22Speaker 1: at least ten years. So with that being said, what
- 39:25Speaker 1: is the moving forward? You have celebrities like you know,
- 39:29Speaker 1: Grant into Maya, And was that the goal to go
- 39:33Speaker 1: with celebrities just to get on TV or what's the
- 39:36Speaker 1: future of black love? Sure? So, just like the four
- 39:39Speaker 1: episodes that you saw, we're going to continue combining you know,
- 39:43Speaker 1: celebrities and everyday people from all over the country. Um.
- 39:47Speaker 1: And it was important for a couple of reasons. I
- 39:49Speaker 1: would say the most important reason is that seeing these
- 39:53Speaker 1: people who have a lot of money and have a
- 39:54Speaker 1: lot of success and hearing them talk about their relationships,
- 39:58Speaker 1: hearing them talk about how they met and realize same
- 40:01Speaker 1: that we're all the same it was really important for
- 40:06Speaker 1: they just got too did you got to toothpaste instead
- 40:08Speaker 1: of just one? They say, got a problem? A problem? Yeah, exactly. Um.
- 40:12Speaker 1: And and also that you know, for business, for television business,
- 40:17Speaker 1: you have to have celebrities. So at the end of
- 40:19Speaker 1: the day, it was both an important part of our
- 40:22Speaker 1: show and the content of our show, but it was
- 40:24Speaker 1: a necessary part of the business because that's what this
- 40:26Speaker 1: show is about. I wanted to be clear about that. Okay,
- 40:29Speaker 1: let's talk about this now. How is you because I'm
- 40:31Speaker 1: gonna just talk real now. How do you know these
- 40:34Speaker 1: famous people? Cody? You know what I'm saying. How do
- 40:36Speaker 1: you get access to famous people? Cody? Yeah. So I'll
- 40:40Speaker 1: say two things. Everybody, everyone that you saw in season one,
- 40:45Speaker 1: because you know, we're working on season two. But everyone
- 40:47Speaker 1: you saw, they did those interviews without own nobody knew.
- 40:51Speaker 1: We didn't know, we didn't know that this is This
- 40:55Speaker 1: is hustle magnificent. Correct. I will talk about the hustle,
- 41:03Speaker 1: But I do want to give them all credit for
- 41:05Speaker 1: doing this for us. They all felt like black people,
- 41:09Speaker 1: we needed to see it. So they said, cool, I'll
- 41:11Speaker 1: sit down, I'll share my story. Um. So there's that
- 41:14Speaker 1: how did so we didn't know all of them. Um,
- 41:18Speaker 1: we I was. I'm trying to think that. We moved
- 41:21Speaker 1: to you and Corey. We've known them for a long
- 41:22Speaker 1: time after my husband and I knew them individually before
- 41:25Speaker 1: we got married. So that was just an easy ask.
- 41:27Speaker 1: They said yes, and we had a great time. First
- 41:29Speaker 1: of all, let me just tell you those those two
- 41:31Speaker 1: people out there are amazing. They are the most nice.
- 41:37Speaker 1: You almost like wanting, you know, they'd such a good couple,
- 41:39Speaker 1: You almost wanting like a punch them. You know, they
- 41:42Speaker 1: look good and then they love each other for real.
- 41:45Speaker 1: You almost like they's successful. You know. She she sings
- 41:48Speaker 1: like she talked, you know, she just she just thought
- 41:50Speaker 1: she can sing about Syria. You go, is that a
- 41:52Speaker 1: hit song she's singing over there? It's just cheerio. She
- 41:55Speaker 1: served it to the kids. That that that right there,
- 42:00Speaker 1: you started out with the with the perfect couple of niceness.
- 42:04Speaker 1: They're pretty great. Absolutely. And and so here's another one.
- 42:08Speaker 1: So Viola and Julius. My husband met them in a
- 42:12Speaker 1: parking garage. Like we did not know them. He met
- 42:17Speaker 1: them in a parking garage, came up to them and
- 42:19Speaker 1: you know, started talking. They were very polite. Obviously, Julius
- 42:22Speaker 1: is a Texan, so we have that work in our
- 42:24Speaker 1: favorite um and a real and a real and a
- 42:26Speaker 1: real person too. He is, he is and they both
- 42:29Speaker 1: are a long conversation with Julius and uh, he's going
- 42:33Speaker 1: to change the world him and his wife in the
- 42:35Speaker 1: productive business. Yeah, absolutely, and so they were. They exchange
- 42:40Speaker 1: contact information long before the Black Love conversation happened. And
- 42:43Speaker 1: then when when it came up, my husband reached out
- 42:46Speaker 1: and it still took months to schedule. But the point
- 42:48Speaker 1: is he reached out once we had something to say.
- 42:51Speaker 1: It wasn't hey, I met you in a garage. No,
- 42:54Speaker 1: he waited, you know, a year from them to say, hey,
- 42:58Speaker 1: let's would you guys want to do this? And they
- 43:00Speaker 1: said yes right away. Um, and then it was literally
- 43:04Speaker 1: like friends of friends after that, I mean Erica and
- 43:06Speaker 1: Warren Campbell. Um. We had a friend introduced us to them. Um.
- 43:11Speaker 1: Chris Spencerved, the comedian and creator of Real Husbands of Hollywood.
- 43:14Speaker 1: He and his wife Vanessa friended them. Yeah, oh yeah,
- 43:19Speaker 1: he's wonderful. They're both grade um, and so it was
- 43:22Speaker 1: friends of friends. You know, we are in l A,
- 43:24Speaker 1: we are in Hollywood. My husband produced The Perfect Guy
- 43:27Speaker 1: a couple of years ago with Sinalethan Morri's Chestnut Michael Ewe.
- 43:31Speaker 1: So there are relationships that we do have you out
- 43:34Speaker 1: the big names. Now, that's all right, but you're gonna
- 43:37Speaker 1: have big names to get names at it. That's how
- 43:40Speaker 1: you got Megan Good correct. Uh. Let me think, how
- 43:43Speaker 1: did we get Magame? Um? I think so. I think
- 43:46Speaker 1: the the studio relationship. No, it wasn't through the studies.
- 43:50Speaker 1: He knew her. I think that they she had auditioned
- 43:53Speaker 1: for something your Oh, that's right. What it was a
- 43:57Speaker 1: film that we did. She had auditioned for it in
- 43:59Speaker 1: the timing didn't out, but they stayed in touch. So yes,
- 44:03Speaker 1: they were quick to jump on that as well. That's awesome.
- 44:06Speaker 1: So tell us about the future because I'm gona asking
- 44:08Speaker 1: you to tell me upcoming relationships that you have. You
- 44:11Speaker 1: can't tell me those, I can't. I mean only the
- 44:14Speaker 1: press release. So um, I can drop names, drop names
- 44:17Speaker 1: we have granted to me a coming up. We have
- 44:20Speaker 1: Tina Knowles and Richard Lawson. Um, we have. I know
- 44:24Speaker 1: they're they're amazing and that that couple was really important
- 44:26Speaker 1: to me because when I started this project It was
- 44:29Speaker 1: somewhat about me and my friends and what we see,
- 44:32Speaker 1: but it was also my mom. You know, my parents
- 44:34Speaker 1: were divorced. My mom had not has not remarried, and
- 44:37Speaker 1: I wanted her to see. When Tena Knowles remarried at sixty,
- 44:41Speaker 1: I was like, I have to interview them because I need.
- 44:44Speaker 1: I want my mother and other women and men, you know,
- 44:48Speaker 1: and they're trying to get on their second marriage, you know,
- 44:50Speaker 1: trying to bounce back from divorce. I want them to
- 44:52Speaker 1: feel that same hope and exc A lot of people
- 44:55Speaker 1: just give up at a third day. You know. That's
- 44:58Speaker 1: important because I will tell, you know, people my age,
- 45:01Speaker 1: I look at them and go, what age are you me?
- 45:04Speaker 1: And you say, mate, no, no, no, no, you really
- 45:06Speaker 1: need to go talk to somebody because you're unhealthy. You
- 45:09Speaker 1: really unhealthy. And I think that I would tell people,
- 45:12Speaker 1: and some people run away from getting old. I don't
- 45:14Speaker 1: because I feel you have to accomplish things to get old.
- 45:17Speaker 1: And and this project that you have, I'm glad you're
- 45:20Speaker 1: including people from various age groups because it's important absolutely,
- 45:25Speaker 1: and so obviously for those we make exceptions to the
- 45:28Speaker 1: ten years because people on their second marriage observation like
- 45:32Speaker 1: We've interviewed over eighty couples just to be there, and
- 45:34Speaker 1: some of them are in their twenties and some of
- 45:35Speaker 1: them are in their eighties and everything in between. And
- 45:39Speaker 1: people on their second marriage seem to have a lot
- 45:42Speaker 1: of perspective, um and and and so once you're there,
- 45:47Speaker 1: you know what you're doing, you know what you're getting
- 45:49Speaker 1: yourself into. So our couples that are on their second marriage,
- 45:52Speaker 1: I think some of them have been married, you know,
- 45:54Speaker 1: four years of them been married, you know, ten or twenties.
- 45:57Speaker 1: But um, we had we made some exceptions obviously for
- 45:59Speaker 1: people like Richard. Well. The thing about it is that
- 46:02Speaker 1: I think about it because you get into the blended
- 46:04Speaker 1: family conversation when you start talking about you know, remarriages
- 46:09Speaker 1: and things like that, because something that was really important
- 46:12Speaker 1: to me, and that's really really, really really important things
- 46:17Speaker 1: like that. So so you have this fantastic project, you
- 46:19Speaker 1: obviously have a fantastic husband. That means that your future
- 46:23Speaker 1: in this business is Black Love just one of the projects.
- 46:27Speaker 1: What's the next project that you have on the horizon,
- 46:30Speaker 1: or you just focused on Black Love right now? Um,
- 46:32Speaker 1: I am extremely focused on Black Love in part because
- 46:35Speaker 1: as a director, it takes every day of me, you know,
- 46:39Speaker 1: especially with editing, where editing Season two every single day.
- 46:42Speaker 1: We do have a few other projects in the pipeline.
- 46:44Speaker 1: Some of them could gather, some of them not together. Absolutely, Um,
- 46:47Speaker 1: so we are. I'm trying to figure out what I
- 46:50Speaker 1: can say. Don't don't, don't pressure yourself. The beauty I
- 46:55Speaker 1: like about it is that there are so many powerful,
- 46:59Speaker 1: you know, husband and wife African American production teams in Hollywood.
- 47:05Speaker 1: That's that's a tremendous growing trend. Would you agree, Yeah, absolutely,
- 47:09Speaker 1: And we talked to some of those couples. Hopefully will
- 47:11Speaker 1: get them to sit down. DeAndre Whitfield and Sally m Richardson,
- 47:15Speaker 1: you know, they both work on Clean Sugar and she's
- 47:18Speaker 1: directing a lot. Hopefully we'll get them to sit down there.
- 47:21Speaker 1: They've said, yes, it's just all scheduling, you know. So
- 47:24Speaker 1: so to your point earlier, this can go on for
- 47:26Speaker 1: a long time. And I've read a lot of amazing
- 47:28Speaker 1: couples all over the country. Your idea was ten years ago.
- 47:32Speaker 1: Now it's like it's on a launching pad for tremendous success.
- 47:37Speaker 1: I love the fact you're the HPC person because of
- 47:39Speaker 1: the fact that your whole family supported that brand and
- 47:43Speaker 1: and show evidence that if you send your child to
- 47:46Speaker 1: that type of educational facility, it does not diminish your
- 47:49Speaker 1: opportunities in life. And that's what a lot of people
- 47:51Speaker 1: will say, you go there, nobody's gonna hire you, or
- 47:54Speaker 1: they might not say it that way, but the general
- 47:57Speaker 1: thought is you go to a wide institution of higher
- 48:00Speaker 1: learning that you will get more opportunity than going to
- 48:02Speaker 1: an hbc U school of educational opportunity. You're a prime
- 48:06Speaker 1: example that that's a lie and you should continue to
- 48:09Speaker 1: build your brand. In closing, I want to say this, please,
- 48:13Speaker 1: I'm have my PR firm send me some links so
- 48:16Speaker 1: I can drive people on my Money Making Conversation Facebook page.

- 50:18Speaker 1: get it right because my name was Sean McDonald and
- 50:20Speaker 1: so you know, people call the show that's here Russian,
- 50:23Speaker 1: and I gotta I kinda gotta let it slide sometimes
- 50:26Speaker 1: because I didn't want to just blow them out the water,
- 50:28Speaker 1: go hey, my name is Sean, you know. But I
- 50:31Speaker 1: am respectful because I would tell people your job in
- 50:34Speaker 1: life is to get people to say your name right,
- 50:37Speaker 1: and they said right. That means your brand and your
- 50:39Speaker 1: marketing is working. So your social media guru, why do
- 50:44Speaker 1: they give you that title? Or who gave you that title?
- 50:47Speaker 1: Because that's that's a powerful time. That's a lot of
- 50:49Speaker 1: responsibility to come with a title like that. So Tori,
- 50:53Speaker 1: it is. And I've been called that many times the clients,
- 50:59Speaker 1: friends and people online, and I guess it's number one.
- 51:04Speaker 1: I find it to be so interesting the way social
- 51:06Speaker 1: media marketing has taken the psychological effects of social media.
- 51:13Speaker 1: And you know, for the past five or six years,
- 51:16Speaker 1: I've just made it my business to understand how we
- 51:19Speaker 1: interact online through our personal lives and our professional lives.
- 51:24Speaker 1: And I guess that is what has resulted in me
- 51:26Speaker 1: being a gurgle as they say, your guru because guess what,
- 51:30Speaker 1: like you said, you didn't just jump into it, because
- 51:32Speaker 1: a lot of people have just jumped into it, and
- 51:34Speaker 1: then they think just posting is the just the key,
- 51:37Speaker 1: and they have all the information of what you're supposed
- 51:41Speaker 1: to do, but don't have the resume of what you
- 51:44Speaker 1: should do. And you have the resume of what you
- 51:47Speaker 1: should do because you have respected people who have called
- 51:50Speaker 1: on your celebrities, business individuals who called on your services. Correct,
- 51:56Speaker 1: that's right, Ericabad, You just on social media. I'm sorry, Eric,
- 52:03Speaker 1: about to do is one of your clients? Correct, We're
- 52:05Speaker 1: not on social media. I actually started with her um
- 52:09Speaker 1: and at the Black Forest Theater. Now, let me ask
- 52:16Speaker 1: you this about your your whole career. When you when
- 52:18Speaker 1: we start talking about being a guru, talking about you know,
- 52:21Speaker 1: branding yourself and making yourself. Uh, there's a there's a
- 52:26Speaker 1: price line that you have to charge people for your services. Correct, Okay,
- 52:31Speaker 1: how did you How did you develop that? Because I
- 52:34Speaker 1: want people to understand that. You know, I'm gonna tell
- 52:36Speaker 1: you something about me. Um My wife always telling me
- 52:39Speaker 1: you under you underpriss yourself. You should charge them more,
- 52:43Speaker 1: and I just tell them, look, I'm just trying to
- 52:44Speaker 1: get the business right now, because once I get the business,
- 52:47Speaker 1: then I can have a resume. And when I have
- 52:49Speaker 1: a resume, then I could charge people more. Is that
- 52:52Speaker 1: the correst philosophy to have? I yes, that is the
- 52:55Speaker 1: way that it generally works in almost any business. As
- 53:00Speaker 1: you're first starting out and you don't have as much
- 53:03Speaker 1: of a clientele or experience, that may be valuable to
- 53:08Speaker 1: somebody who's willing to pay for you. That doesn't mean
- 53:10Speaker 1: that you're not an expert at it, an expert at it,
- 53:13Speaker 1: but they want to see the experience and the proven work.
- 53:17Speaker 1: So your first you know, times that you're charging for
- 53:20Speaker 1: things have to to your experience, and as you grow
- 53:24Speaker 1: in your fields, and as you become more experienced and
- 53:27Speaker 1: have more of a resume, as you say, then your
- 53:30Speaker 1: price can increase because your value increases. Not only are
- 53:34Speaker 1: you doing the work, but your brand name is something
- 53:37Speaker 1: somebody they want to be associated with. You know, I
- 53:40Speaker 1: have a lot of people that take pride in saying
- 53:42Speaker 1: that they're one of my clients. Oh, I work with
- 53:44Speaker 1: Satria SATORI does this for me only Satria handles. You know,
- 53:48Speaker 1: this part of my business. So that part of my business.
- 53:50Speaker 1: So my name itself also has value for them, not
- 53:55Speaker 1: just the service that I provide. So I'm able to
- 53:57Speaker 1: charge according to the value. Okay, cool. Let me let
- 54:01Speaker 1: me ask you this. Now, if somebody came to you,
- 54:03Speaker 1: do you have a rate sheet or it's based on
- 54:05Speaker 1: the conversation. It's based on the conversation, But there is
- 54:09Speaker 1: a rate sheet that exists somewhere to start, because if
- 54:14Speaker 1: you don't know where you're starting, you're going to the
- 54:19Speaker 1: number one outbid yourself because you're charging too high and
- 54:22Speaker 1: it doesn't match up with the industry prices that you're in,
- 54:26Speaker 1: or you're going to underbaid yourself. So you do to
- 54:30Speaker 1: have a price sheet for yourself. But I don't pass
- 54:33Speaker 1: out price sheets to clients. We always have a conversation
- 54:37Speaker 1: for us. I find out what their needs are and
- 54:40Speaker 1: a lot of UM social media clients needs are very
- 54:43Speaker 1: individuals depending on what their goals are. So once we
- 54:46Speaker 1: determine the goals and you know, what is it that
- 54:50Speaker 1: they're actually going to want for me and what can
- 54:52Speaker 1: I do for them, then we work on different prices
- 54:54Speaker 1: depending on that. Okay, with that being saying, let me
- 54:57Speaker 1: ask you this question about social media, and believe me,
- 55:01Speaker 1: all the questions I'm asking is just to give people
- 55:03Speaker 1: information so they can understand your brand and also hopefully
- 55:06Speaker 1: contact you and maybe get some additional customer because we
- 55:09Speaker 1: all want more customers. That's the bottom line. We want
- 55:13Speaker 1: to be busy, busy, busy, busy. Now the interesting what
- 55:17Speaker 1: is the worst thing most that that I shouldn't say
- 55:20Speaker 1: the worst thing that what is the most um? Because people,
- 55:23Speaker 1: you know, they see these celebrities, you know, forty million,
- 55:26Speaker 1: ten million, you know, you know all these numbers out there.
- 55:30Speaker 1: Does that give people a false sense of how fast
- 55:33Speaker 1: or how quickly they can grow in social media? Yeah?
- 55:37Speaker 1: It does sometimes, So Number one, we want to compare ourselves.
- 55:41Speaker 1: It was top of the line all of the time.
- 55:43Speaker 1: Whenever that isn't where you are. UM, one of my
- 55:47Speaker 1: business Partners always says you have to shoot from where
- 55:49Speaker 1: you stand. You're not gonna get forty million listeners when
- 55:54Speaker 1: you have a clientel base of forty or reach of
- 55:57Speaker 1: four hundred. You know, those are these are artists that
- 56:01Speaker 1: have entire machines behind them, that have advertising dollars that
- 56:05Speaker 1: the average entrepreneur or small business owner could never match.
- 56:10Speaker 1: And um, a lot of the numbers are sometimes inflated
- 56:13Speaker 1: as well, so you're a lot of people are comparing
- 56:17Speaker 1: their real life numbers to inflated information as well. But
- 56:22Speaker 1: the most important thing is if you're a business and
- 56:24Speaker 1: you're trying to reach people on social media, you you
- 56:29Speaker 1: want to reach people who are really going to be
- 56:31Speaker 1: interested in your business. It's not so much about the
- 56:34Speaker 1: number of people, but the quality of people that are responding. Engagement,
- 56:38Speaker 1: that's the key, right, Engagement, the most important thing. Yeah,
- 56:41Speaker 1: because that's that's that's the number one thing, is the
- 56:44Speaker 1: engagement if you posted the picture. And that's why I
- 56:47Speaker 1: was just talking about earlier when I was on the
- 56:48Speaker 1: phone with Chila Coach, we was just talking about marketing
- 56:51Speaker 1: and branding. Is that a lot of people just got
- 56:54Speaker 1: there doing silly stuff, posting videos. They getting engagement, but
- 56:58Speaker 1: it has nothing to do with their brain and that's
- 57:01Speaker 1: really really crazy. And I also bring up a point
- 57:04Speaker 1: that I've told people about. You know, I've managed Steve
- 57:07Speaker 1: Harvor for fifteen years, so I know that when you're
- 57:09Speaker 1: in that talent pool is that people are like you.
- 57:12Speaker 1: If you they like your jokes, they like you or
- 57:15Speaker 1: follow you. If they like your song, they like you,
- 57:18Speaker 1: follow you if they like your your movie you in
- 57:20Speaker 1: or your television series. So that's know that that's that's
- 57:24Speaker 1: very significant and understanding their popularity in the social media world.
- 57:29Speaker 1: When you when you're an individual, that's when the whole
- 57:32Speaker 1: who you are and who you're talking to comes into
- 57:35Speaker 1: play and the engagement correct exactly right. You know, you
- 57:40Speaker 1: want to have the people who are interested in what
- 57:43Speaker 1: you're doing and possibly to turn into customers, clients, or
- 57:47Speaker 1: an audience that matters. You can have a video that
- 57:50Speaker 1: has a whole bunch of likes and whatever it was
- 57:54Speaker 1: the feeling that the video gave them encourage them to
- 57:58Speaker 1: like it. Like there's there's no returning investment. It doesn't
- 58:01Speaker 1: really benefit you in any kind of way you want to.
- 58:04Speaker 1: If you're if you're a hairstylist, for instance, and you're
- 58:06Speaker 1: using social media to post some of your client results,
- 58:11Speaker 1: you are more interested in people in your surrounding area
- 58:15Speaker 1: being engaged in your posts than just overall people being
- 58:19Speaker 1: excited about what they see your Your goals would be
- 58:23Speaker 1: specific to your market area. So you may have less
- 58:28Speaker 1: um likes and views and you know somebody else, but
- 58:32Speaker 1: if those people are in your area and could become
- 58:34Speaker 1: potential clients, that's much more important. Cool. Now, my next
- 58:39Speaker 1: question is do you said it earlier? A lot of people.
- 58:42Speaker 1: You get a lot of your your your your business
- 58:44Speaker 1: or some of your business from people word of mouth.
- 58:47Speaker 1: You know, she's awesome. If you're trying to get into
- 58:49Speaker 1: social media, somebody want to build your brain, she don't
- 58:51Speaker 1: want to turn to. Do you market yourself? Do you
- 58:54Speaker 1: go out and if you market yourself, what lanes do
- 58:57Speaker 1: you use for market other than social media? Or is
- 59:00Speaker 1: all social media? Not? Definitely, not at all. There is
- 59:03Speaker 1: no campaign that is successful with media only ever, that's
- 59:08Speaker 1: people have turned to that and that's a lazy marketing plan.
- 59:12Speaker 1: You still have to repeat that one more time, that
- 59:17Speaker 1: one more time. Now it's only doing social media. That's
- 59:20Speaker 1: a lazy marketing plan. It takes much more than just
- 59:22Speaker 1: social media. Why is it a lazy marketing plan because
- 59:28Speaker 1: people are just posting and thinking that's enough. They're not
- 59:30Speaker 1: actually trying to go out and still do physical marketing,
- 59:33Speaker 1: guerilla marketing, appearances, you know, being present in places that
- 59:39Speaker 1: your industry other professionals are. A marketing plan is a
- 59:44Speaker 1: multi tiered process and social media marketing. Social media marketing
- 59:50Speaker 1: is only one part of your overall marketing. And for
- 59:54Speaker 1: myself that's the truth to social media marketing is a
- 59:58Speaker 1: large part of what I do. But in addition, I panels,
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: I go to events and many other people. I passed
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: out my business card, I get email addresses. I would
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: see my email list is my most important marketing from
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: myself and my business. That's that's so so a lot
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: of people they just jump on it because it's free.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: In a sense, it is free, but you know you
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: can't boost and give your further reach. But sometimes when
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: you're reaching, you don't know who you're reaching. So that
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: that five or ten or fifteen dollars that you could
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: pay to get anywhere from two to additional ten thousand
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: people depending on how many people have liked your page,
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: or if you don't have enough people liking your page,
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: it means you're extended beyond your your friends and family likes, right,
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: And that's that's really important when we're talking like this
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: because of the fact that here you are an expert
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: in it, your your your social media guru. You're telling people,
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: don't just define your whole business, all your entertainment career,
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: all your personal lifestyle that you're trying to brand the
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: market on just social media, because everybody that's that's the way.
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: What is the future of social media? Then? What is
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: the future? Then? Are we overwhelming a system? Are we
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: are we making a system so generic that it has
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: no value? What is the future of social media? Then?
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: The future social media is actually really great. Um. We're
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: actually changing the way we interact as humans. Some people,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: um are to be discouraged by it, but we're becoming
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: less and less petically interacting society. And we'll see that
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: happening less and less with virtual reality and augmented reality
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: becoming part of social media. For instance, the way people
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: are listening to this program right now. Maybe in the
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: past it would have been a radio program or even
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: a podcast, but now they're able to participate live through
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: their social media, all TV, anything that we do um
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: now that separate from social media will find it to
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: be part of social media original content. You can watch
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: your NFL on social media now. And that's why I
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: tell people it is great for marketing because most small
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: businesses and entrepreneurs could never pay for an advertisement during
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: a football game, but social media marketing aroused for you
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: to be advertising during that time period when people are
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: watching the most important things to them. But we'll see
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: more engagement of virtual reality and augmented reality as we
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: move forward. And additionally, I want to add it Mark
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: Zuckerberg has said we will be able to think our
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: status is onto Facebook in the future. Wow. Now, we
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: want to bring you back for one more break so
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: because you felt like you but you trying to wrap
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: up on me there. You know you have that wrap
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: up voice, you know, like I gotta go, I gotta go,
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: I got things to do. Rashan, Okay, I've got talking
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: to you. Well, we're gonna be back because I want
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: to I want to know more about your hashtag social work.
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: I also want to know about that the your your
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: methodology that's in the correct you're playing. Let me just
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: break it down. You're playing your plan for success and uh, fantastic.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: Thank you for calling them show. We'll be right back
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: with more money Making Conversation A three two, five, five
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: nine two at the phone call fantastic. This is why

- 1:03:19Speaker 1: you will learn how to be successful for free. Now,
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: if you talk to the end of these people off
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: my show, they're gonna charge, So you better keep listening
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: to Hi. This ra Sean McDonald, the host of Money
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: Making Conversations. Money Making Conversations to show that provides you
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: information on how you can win in business and in
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: your life. I am on the phone right now with
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: the the co found of hashtag social Work, Satoria Hernanda.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: I gotta correct again. Dinner cool, awesome, Well good. I
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: want to make sure I brought you back because I
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: want to talk about the actual company itself. We talked
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: about a lot of things. We talked about your vision
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: with talk about the brand and the whole work. What
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: it actually is social Work. We are a social media
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: coaching and training company. We provide classes all over the country.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: When people fly us in and ask us to hold
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: classes for different industry events. They fly y'all in, They
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: fly y'all in. Yes, oh lord, you big time, you
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: big time. Come on, continue, continue with the story. Yes,
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: and we hold classes as well locally in Dallas. We
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: do online seminars and people hire us for one on
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: one consultations. And what we tend to do generally is
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: set up a strategy for companies, entrepreneurs and individuals of
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: how to get to their goals of their social media marketing.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: Who are they trying to reach? How many people are
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: they trying to reach? What is the return for that investment?
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: You know? Are they just trying to showcase products? Do
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: they want to showcase their company messaging? You know, we
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: we we've to get that out for them, and we
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: teach them how to do it themselves. I'm not a
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: social media manager, which is a whole different type of person.
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: That's a that's a different type of person. Correct it is. Yes,
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: there's day to day post and all that. Correct, And
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: I'm just gonna slow it down for people when they
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: hear that. You're saying, Look what I'm not going to
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: be responsive for posting, you know, two or three posts
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: to day on your Twitter feed or your face repeat
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: or your Instagram Instagram account. That's not what you do, correct,
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: that is not what I do. Now, I provide their
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: strategy and help them um. Also, we create content for
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: companies as well. So let's say that part of their
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: strategy and everyone's strategy should include a video component. Will
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: help them create videos and different interactions so that their
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: Instagram stories or Facebook videos and Twitter videos are quality
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: content and keep with in line with their brand messaging.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Let me ask you this, isn't it important to be
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: consistent with that message? A lot of people want to
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: just I'm just I'm just moving to every day people
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: because everybody wants that viral video. Everybody think that that's
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: that viral video is going to change your life, and
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: that's not the case. What what should people be doing
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: when when you talk about content, what should they be
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: doing the most important content? And again, psychology has a
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: lot to do with social media. We're all on social
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: media for the same reasons. We want to be heard,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: we want to be expressed, and we want to um
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: engage with other people. That's from every walk of life,
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: including your personal reasons that your online all the way
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: to your professional reasons. So your content wants to speak
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: to the human interaction, anything that's funny, anything that brings emotion,
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: like sadness unfortunately, and you know often even horror. Those
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: are the things that people are most attracted to. So
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: your content, it should stay within brand, but you want
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: to reach the human emotions if you're wanting the most engagement.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: So people who UM start videos with like long intros
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: or a bunch of words, you're gonna lose people before
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: it ever get to the part you want them to see.
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: How long is your sixty seconds? Two seconds is appropriate
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: for Facebook and UM Instagram, Instagram, but people we really
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: like and will we turn the crow vignettes. So if
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: you can get your information across even shorter, people's attention
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: span is about thirty seconds for the most ten viewings.
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: So you gotta get in there, and you gotta start
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: the video off with you gotta scare, make them cry,
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: and then they watch you make laugh, scare, make him
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: laugh and then to cry. All the all three of
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: those emotionals start flying. You gotta viral video. It's funny
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: because you said earlier about the different platforms. For instance,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: I market my money making conversation on my Facebook page.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: I market my money making conversation on my heart radio podcasts,
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: and I market my mon to make conversation on my
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations Facebook page which has two followers, and
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: my Twitter account which has over five thousand followers. So
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: I'm making that shift to like really building that brand
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: out because it really it has to become a consistent
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: layer of identification. I can keep it on my Facebook
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: page of my fan page Rishan McDonald which has over
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: tixtar thousand Facebook page. But that feels like that's miss
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: messaging and you're just saying there has to be a
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: consistency with your voice. Correct. You just have to be
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: a consistency with your voice. And also you have to
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: remember that you can't force people to come where you are.
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: You are? What does that mean? Okay, okay, okay, kind
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: of kind of got me there. What does that mean?
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: What does that mean? Because I may be doing something
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: wrong and you you actually right? Okay? Cool? Having your
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: content in various locations right. Um, For instance, when you
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: go to a four way stop, there may be given eleven,
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: a Taxico and Exxon and a Shell. Right, We're still
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: need gas, but people stop at different stores for different reasons.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: One may just be because of convenience, it's the closest
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: one to them. Other people may have had bad experience
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: with another brand and saying with a social platform. Other
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: people may just be comfortable only going to you know,
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: one store. But there's different reasons that we visit different things,
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: and that's the same. Yeah. Um, some people aren't on
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: Facebook for whatever reason they've chosen out to be there.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: That doesn't mean you don't want to reach them just
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: because they're only on Twitter and Instagram is the same,
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: you know, way people they're on different platforms for different reasons.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: And one other thing I would like to point out
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: to people. The reason I say email is the most
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: important part of your social campaign is because if you
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: think about the Old Times Square or Main Square, that
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: town square at noon, a lot of people may be there.
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: Everybody in the city isn't there, though they may you know,
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: be crossing by. But if you yell out something, there's
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: only a few people that are going to get to
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: hear your message. And social media is like that. You're
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: never going to reach all of your followers at the
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: same time. The system is only allow to reach a
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: certain portion of who follows you. That is the setup
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: that algorithms are set, you're not going to be able
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: to change that. But when you have someone's email address,
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: instead of just shouting in times square, you're actually ringing
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: the doorbell. And that's a whole different way of reaching people. Here.
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: You're good, You're good, You're good. You know you know,
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: I feel like I'm in a seminar right now because
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: you know you're not breaking stride or anything. You're saying.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: You are articulate, you know, you're taking up, you're pausing
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: at the right time so I can deliver that that
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: killer terminology. WHOA Well, you just hit me with email
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: is like ringing a doorbell. Now you know that straight
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: out your seminar, straight out your seminar. R whole power
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: point with that come. That was brilliant. It was too
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: brilliant because You've always with these catch phrases, but I've
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: never heard that. I've said, I've called this phrase that
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: the social media is your own personal press conference. Now
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: I've called that statement. And that's so I know when
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: people go, Wow, that's pretty that's pretty powerful. Like that,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: that's pretty powerful, I said, yeah, because that's why you
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: don't see people calling press conference in the way because
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: they just go to social media. And you know, uh,
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: President Trump is a prime example. Yes, and so that
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: means that the people are now taking control of how
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: they market themselves and how they brand themselves through social media. Now,
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: how can we reach you? How can we reach this articulate,
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: this co founder of social works who's changing the right
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: in the world. Because you're managing, you're not posting. And
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: that's very key for me to tell you. Tell people
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: that because a lot of people out there confused to
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: too that she's not posting anything for you. Well, she's
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: gonna tell you how to be successful and give you
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: a plan to win in social media. Correct, this is correct?
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: So how do they reach you? To fish? Um, you
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: can reach me online on any social media at satry
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: s a t R I zero six, reach me through email.
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: You mean there's another story out there. I just like
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: the number. Okay, I'm about to say whole of that.
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: Come on, No, this ain't sandingero six and um, you
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: can reach me on email if you want to talk
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: about your social media needs at social work and work
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: is spelled with an e ink at gmail dot com.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: And that that that that makes it happ when they
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: when they contact you and also I want you to
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: give me information. I can post it on the Money
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: Making Conversation Facebook page because right now I'm just trying
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: to create the world of engagement. So we create a
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: source there's primarily geared towards young entrepreneurs who and every
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: word entrepreneurship people confused strictly with business, and it's really
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: about life. It's about taking you. Am I correct when
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: I say that? Yeah? So right, when you're an entrepreneur,
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: this is this is what you do, this is who
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: you are. If you don't just clock in, this is
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: your and that a lot of people they run from that.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: And that's why I know I'm I'm building a brand
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: with my brand of social money Making Conversation because I'm
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: trying to create that breakthrough. Because when I talk talking
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: about small business, I know I get tuned out. Oh
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: he ain't talking to me. I am talking to you.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: I'm talking about you as an individual. Because what what
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: annoys me the most is that when people clock in
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: for work, they don't even see themselves as a business.
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: They only see themselves as an employee. And that's not true.
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: You can build your brand and build your career because
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: I did it. I've worked at IBM. I know what
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: I did as an employee, how I built my brand
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: and built my and marketed the way I wanted to
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: do with the company, and that's how I rose through
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: the ranks. That's why I was a star at IBM.
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: And and that took those same principles and I apply
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: them to my everyday life. And so I'm just trying
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: to get everyday people to understand you can win, and
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: you can win big time, and you're showing yourself that, hey,
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: look I got skills, I got talents, and now people
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: are flying me around. What what and and close it?
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: What makes you feel so good about the life that
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: you live right now? Tori? Email it, and I hope
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: there are young entrepreneurs listening because I quit school at
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: age fourteen and had two children before two children before
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: I was eighteen years old, and at some point I
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: decided that I wanted something different for my children than
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: I have for myself, and that's the driving force for
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: me in my business and wanting to be successful and
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: be a good life guide for them. And that same
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: thing has what brought me to helping other young people
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: with their businesses today and realizing that you know, there's
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: not one path to success. You have your all path
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: and you know what, a lot of times it changes
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: along the way. And that's okay too, as long as
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: you get back for yourself. And as you were saying,
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: working for corporate Corporate America is great training for anything
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: in life that you made. So never look down at yourself.
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: If you're working somebody else, why you're also working on
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: your need and for yourself. And you know resumes today
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: you're supposed to put a personal brand statement on there.
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: So you have to figure out who you are, what
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: you want, and where you're going in any walk of life.
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: And I think the thing that makes me the most
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: happy about being a business owner and being successful being
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: able to help other people advance their dreams and their
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: goals and get their business growing, you know, through social
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: media and through strategy, and I mean, I love it.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: It's a it's an awesome opportunity whatever to keep winning,
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: your keep winning. I hope I can, I hope I
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: can invite you back. I hope this was a great
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: experience for you. So your energy is amazing. I'll definitely
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: be tuning into some of the other people that you
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: have on on your show this. This is a brand
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: that and it takes people like you who have to
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: take the time and deliver the message because I know
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: I'm building something unique here and it's through relationships they
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: get you there, and you are talent, young lady. And
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: I want to tell that other story that you just
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: kind of like broke the news to me at the
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: n end, and I don't have no minutes to talk
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: because you know, I'll be all over that story because
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: so many people allow those setbacks to change their lives
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: and they never get back on track. And you got
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: back on track, not only as a as a as
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: a as a fantastic parent, but you got no track
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: as an entrepreneur and you've got them back on check
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: as a leader. And that's amazing. Besides the fact that
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: you know, when you show it for the PTA meet,
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: you define his mom in class, of course, but ourselves
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: will always be Okay, you stay strong, and I appreciate you.
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: SA Tori zero six Okay, that's her because she's like
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: she loves that number. We'll be back with more Money

- 1:17:33Speaker 1: excellence in all she does. My leak Till is on

- 1:17:41Speaker 1: first monthly subscription service for naturally curly hair. Please welcome
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: to Money Making Conversations, My leak Till. How you doing that?
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: I'm good? How are you good? I said your name
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: correctly and you were close. It's my leak But that's
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: how No, no, no, no no, no, Rushawn McDonald, you
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: know I'm saying if people call me Russian a rock.
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: You know, I said, hey, hey, hey, look at say
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: my name right, because that's part of your brain, you know,
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: when you because you don't wanna be introduced in front
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: of ten thousand people when somebody say, Mila, you know
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: what you want to do, right, you gonna gonna change
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: the way you walk, It's gonna change where you speak
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: because you have to correct. Everybody gonna throw your whole
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: game plan off. So say your name again correctly for
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: everybody to hear, and Rushan will get it right. From
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: now on, it is my leak till mine with the
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: emphasis on my my exactly great girl, box, Yes, girl,
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you something. I'm tell you something that's
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: a visionary move to create a monthly subscription service. You
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: know that, right? Yeah. I think in my naivete I
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: created it, not knowing how difficult it would be. But
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: I mean now that it's done, it's amazing. Okay. Co
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: two things happening. When did you launch it? Okay, because
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: that's a launch, and then there's worked to the launch. Correct? Correct? Okay? Cool?
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: When did you launch? When did you launch? I did
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: a soft launch November twenty eleven, so I had no products,
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: no boxes, and I said, you know what I'm going
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: to I sent out a press release to Essence magazine
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: and I said, I'm gonna have them. Yeah, I'm gonna
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: have them put this out online. So they released it
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: at eight o'clock online about this new business in this
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: new company that was going to be opening at midnight.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: And I said, Okay, if I get enough people find up,
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: I'll continue if I don't out quit. And I think
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: we had a thousand people sign up like the first
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: hour after midnight, and they just kept going by the thousand.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: So then I said, oh shoot, I gotta you just
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: say on shoot, but we're gonna work at for radio purpose.
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: You gonna say oh shoot? Right, I said, now I
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: gotta get some products and some boxes because I think
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: people want this. Now here's the it's the fun part
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: about it, because see this is an idea. How many
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: people told you you were crazy? Oh my god. Everybody
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: everybody was like, how are you going to do this?
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: You don't even know how to do it. You don't
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: have any products, you don't have any boxes. And I said,
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: as long as airplanes are flying in the sky, I
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: can do this. Like people have figured out crazy you're
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: saying then, and guess what, and guess what the thing
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: about it is that this is like a like like
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: the last three or four years, you've seen a lot
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: of this monthly subscription where you are you pay nine
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: nine nine and every month you get a box with
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: product and correct, that's what you're talking about, right, right, right, yes,
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: And we started almost six years ago doing that absolutely,
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: And so what I'm saying is that that's why I
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: started out with the word visionary, Okay, because everybody basically
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: is emulating what you've done, and from a corporate standpoint,
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: they're coming in with the big dollars, you know, coming in,
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: big reporations are doing it. Now. You started out a
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: little African American girl. I f I'm a track star, undefeated.
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: You know, I ain't never lost in track now already
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: your competitor, correct, correct, very So that means that when
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: you when people were telling you, you know, what made
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: you go beyond their no? You know, I always say
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: that if somebody tells me no, they don't have enough information, right,
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: it's either they don't have I haven't given them enough information,
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: or they're telling me not yet. So I was met
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: with a ton of nose. But I said to myself,
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: there's only twelve months in the year they're over. At
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: the time, they were over six hundred hair care brands,
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: and I was like, I have to be able to
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: at least get twelve yes is out of six hundred.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: I have to So so I did. But when I
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: heard no, I was ever angry. You know, I just said, Okay,
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: they just they need more information. They want to see
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: what I can do. So now I've got to show
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: improve right right, So so let's let's start back now,
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: because see, um, let's talk about your life. You know,
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: you know, where were you at in your life, you know, professionally,
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: were you like looking for the next big thing? All
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: you said, I'm gonna put on effort into this endeavor.
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: I'm pumping my own personal money into this. Who was
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: standing with you? You know when you who was standing
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: with you there? You know I had I was. I
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: started off in entertainment pr and I moved to Atlanta
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: and at the height of the recession, and I couldn't
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: find a job. So I started consulting. And then one
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: of the clients I started consulting um some online some
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: apps and online businesses, And what I was finding by
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: helping them was that they'll let you know how much
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: money your sort of placements have made them. So if
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: I get you some placement, somebody clicks through purchases. And
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: I was helping these brands make you know, eighty thousand,
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: one hundred thousand dollars a month, and my sea at
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: the time was nowhere near that. So I said to myself,
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: I have to be able to come up with something
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: that I can then promote myself. And so that's kind
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: of what the wheel started turning. And I saw deep, deep,
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: deep in the like tech um in the tech trades
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: about a beauty about how beauty subscriptions were going to
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: be making a comeback. They hadn't started yet, but they
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: were going to be making a comeback. And I said,
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: great idea, wrong market, because women of color, we've never
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: nobody ever samples with us, nobody ever does anything. They
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: just expect us to buy it. So I had um.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: I reached out. I basically dialed in all my favors.
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: You know, I would you say that everyty fashion fare
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: was really the leading for as you said, women of color? Right? Okay,
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: so you was working with that platform only out there
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: you say, hey, we gotta build you got we gotta
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: build something for us, correct, correct, just more in terms
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: of sampling, you know, we want black women want to
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: try things too. So that was the deal. So I
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: essentially I dialed in every single favor that I had.
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: The girl who made our current logo, Um, she did
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: it for free. And she goes, if you ever make
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: any money on this, just go ahead and pay me.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: So I, yeah, but I did. She but this is
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: the thing she's been. She's made money off me every
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: single month, and then I have continued to employ her. Yeah.
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: So um, that was the deal. Well, I just basically
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: called everyone, and I had no idea about like packing
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: and shipping and logistics. But my friend connected me with
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: his classmate who owned a fulfillment center, so they took
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: me on for free, no credit. Jack Um, I want
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: to tell you, okay, okay, okay, when did prayer? How
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: much prayer was going on, how much faith was riding
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: this this whole mission. You know what's so crazy is
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: that it was it was what was interesting about my
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: faith and this is that I felt like God was
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: insisting that I do this, Like I've given you this
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: idea and it's like you can try to ignore me
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: that I'm like every single night until you do it,
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: and that really I was like, okay, I hear you.
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: So I was like, I'm going to do it. And
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: when I took one step, it was literally like every
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: it was like every single thing that I needed, somebody
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: stepped up and literally gave it to me, which was
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: insane awesome. That's this is awesome because the reason to
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: say it's awesome because of the fact that you're able
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: to tell your story and make it happen in a
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: big way. Am I correct? And then but but but
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: the thing about it is that I always tell, at
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: what point did you have a plan? At what point
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: did you know? Because you just didn't jump out there
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: on faith, you have plans, right, relationships, mentors and things
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: like that. So because I want people to hear these things,
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: because you know, when you owns to show, like mony
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: main conversation, I get tons of the wreck messages on LinkedIn,
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: on Facebook, people with all these ideas, and as soon
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: as their ideas there's no merit to them, or they
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: just sent me a video, no merit to them, no plan,
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: no plan of action. I get the fact that everybody
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: has a dream, but what is your plan of action
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: tied to that? You are a visionary. And usually when
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: you're a visionary. When I say people a visionary, I'm
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: talking about Zuckenberg or Facebook, I'm talking about Steve Jobs
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: of Apple. These are people who see things uniquely in
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: a space and then make a model that nobody else
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: is doing at the time. That's what you did at
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: the time. That's not becoming popular, has become a very
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: popular drawingre That's that's just just take it off. You know.
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: You see national commercials with these same little monthly subscription boxes.
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: When you get it, you're gonna get these products. Is
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: a guarantee. When we come back, if you don't mind
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: hang on a little bit, we're gonna talk about to
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: my understanding. Uh, you're gonna be a future mom, is there? Correct? Okay,
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: we will talk about that because they're gonna talk about
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: how she gonna change her work schedule, you know, and
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about what's in that box that you
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: get every mond because it changes every month. Correct, correct? Okay, Cool,
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: We'll be right back with more money making conversation. Just fantastic.
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: I don't be a joint you sail if I'm having
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: a good time with your girl cool. I'm back from
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: Sean McDonald. This is the last break and money making Conversation.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: Fantastic show. I want to thank all my guests, starting
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: with Sheila Coates, be your brand. Then we work our
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: way around with Cody Oliver, the executive producer of Black Love,
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: The Answer, Tory Ananda, social media guru. Now I'm on
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: the phone with my leak the emphasis on my til
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: there we go. Now, I'm gonna win with you now
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: because guess you're special. You're very, very special. And I
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: say that because of the fact that you know it
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: had to be uh, you know from you know, it's
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: interesting when I meet people like you because you got
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: it early on somehow you know, you had the gene
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: or somebody was important in your life. I don't know
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: your entire story to say that that that pushed you that,
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: uh I told you you could be more than what
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: everybody else puts on the wall, or everybody else tells
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: you that the color of your skin. Who was that person?
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: Probably I think my parents, you know, my parents, my
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: dad specifically, probably just always I knew, I knew as
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: I'm doing my daughter right now, I'm pushing I'm pushing
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: them to miss my leak to you, my daughter gonna
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: be Christiana McDonald. There you go. Yeah, like very I think,
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: very tough, just you know, very tough and always spoke
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: to me like I was an adult, Like never kitty talk.
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: Always let me have an opinion in a voice. And
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: I think that that that really helps with limiting the
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: amount of fear that I have as an adult. Do
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: you want like I just I jokingly said that it's
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: that's a compliment. I feel. I want my daughter to be,
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: you know, just like my leak tell It's just how
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: does that feel when that when you hear somebody like
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: me Rashan McDonald say that to you and sincerely say
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: that to you because of the fact that you know
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: you're doing your own thing, and you're doing it in
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: a way that most people have told you know, but
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: in your back of your mind, you've had the support
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: system and said, don't listen, don't listen, don't listen. I
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: talked to work hard. I've been telling you, you a baby,
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: that you can do this. Don't let people get your
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: head and tell you what you cannot do. That's amazing
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: that's amazing. How do you feel? How do you feel? Um?
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: You know what, sometimes I get people write me tons
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: of letters and it is definitely humbling and sometimes overwhelmed
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: me because I you know, the thing of being quote
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: unquote special is nice to hear, I think. But more
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: than anything, it's just the dedication to just working hard
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: and always doing the personal work. You know, it takes
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: a lot of personal word to not be defeated because
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: I think we don't realized the person that defeats us
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: first is ourselves. Yeah. Yeah, it was like a lot
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: of work to not talk yourself out of the game.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: You know. It's interesting because I try to share a
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: little personal stories about myself because I've achieved a lot
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: of success in my life. But I've also i will
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: tell you, because people told me I was special. Because
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: people told me I was unique, then you know, I've
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: been bullied in my life, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: So not only not physically, I was bullied physically when
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: I was in fourth grade. Look, I couldn't pass the
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: due Let's I game a quarter. And but you know
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: when teachers asked me to read and class, you know,
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: students with get mad and people they honored you for
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: good attendance a grade. Your other peer group will getting mad.
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: And I'm gonna tell it took me a long time.
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: That's why I admired the the the share of protection
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: that was given to you, that allowed you to grow
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: because I only had to I only had to figure
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: it out on my own. And I would tell you
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: it took me years to accept after Roe Sean McDonald
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: was and is today, and that's important that when I'm
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: talking to you, and I'm gonna keep pounding if you don't,
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna keep telling you, I ain't gotta tell you
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: too much because you know you've got people have already
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: told you all your life how special you are. And
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: I want I want the kids to be put your poster,
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: put your put your brand on their walls and say
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: I want to be just like her, because that will
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: enable them to understand that no matter what, you can
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: be like my leak. And I think that's im I
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: think that's important and that leads to my next question.
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: My next story is about your podcast because because you see,
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: that's how I working on this show. You know, my
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: leak got I kind of working over here, but I'm
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: really sliding over to something even more important, is your podcast.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: Tell us about your podcast, the podcast I actually started, um,
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: So I tell you what. I launched callbox that November,
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: and I started the podcast literally the very next month,
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: almost as a like a converse station with myself, UM
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: and everything that I had gone through personally, and also
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: all of the lessons I felt that I had learned
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: that had gotten me to that point. And so I
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: think when I started recording it back in twenty eleven,
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: I used to get like maybe twenty listens like and
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: it was so defeating. It was. It was so defeating,
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: wasn't it. You know? I had no I had no
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: point of like, point of view, the point of view.
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: I had nothing to compare it to. There was not
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: that people weren't really doing podcasts back then. So twenty
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: was better than nothing, and nothing was all I knew
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: and so found. Yeah, it's very much word of mouth.
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: I think all of my businesses have succeeded just by
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: word of mouth. And now I get millions of downloads
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: a year on my podcast. And if I do it
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: all alone, I do it by myself, my own microphone,
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: and I do it in my kitchen and it's there's
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: you know, I just started ben guests on them, but
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: it really is just more of a with So I
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: won't qualify, right, I'm ball here that I won't curl
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: I won't qualify for the Curly Box interview. But that's
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: all right now just continue with you with your motivation
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: about your podcast, which I have a big fan. Fact,
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: she's she's she's kind of underselling herself over two million downloads. Okay,
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: this is not she she's away from twenty to over
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: two million. And I say that because of the fact
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: that that's what this show is about. Money making conversation.
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: Because see, along the way of being successful in my life,
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: my personal and my professional life. You know, sometimes you
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: know because you're you're a goal late in person, which
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: means that when I say that means that when she
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: meets one goal, she moves past it. And sometimes you
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: move past it so fast you don't even appreciate what
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: you've accomplished and my correctness in it, and so and
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: so that's that's what this show is about. Be able
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: to let me hear your story, but also to share
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: with you the values of what you're doing and how
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: you are changing the game. You've already said two very
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: significant things on this show, but you've been very casual
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: with it. You started Morthless subscriptions market subscription before that
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: was even in the game. Okay, and then you turn
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: around saying, I was podcasting before podcasting, you know, So
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: so you had a vision about two and you started
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: nearly at the same time. So so so yeah, yeah,
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: just said yeah, so so with that being said, my friend,
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: my friend who who who's out of here just doing
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: it up, you know, about to be a fantastic future mom.
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: What is the future for you? Oh gosh, that's always
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: the hardest question. You know. I think that everything that
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: I do is always, um, whatever I think is on
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: my heart, right, so I think, uh, I have I
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: feel very lucky to have businesses. But the podcast does well,
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: the the curl box does well. And now that I
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: mean I've decided to become a mom a little bit
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: later in life. Uh that I feel like I've earned
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: my right to to have some time and you know,
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: in grace, in grace because yeah, I've hauled but for
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: a very long time, you know, countless nights, you know,
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: weekends given away. And now I think it's like I
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: think I had. What happened when I became successful is
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: that I took a lot of trips and I fall
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: a lot of things, and I'm like, this isn't going
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: to get boring alone after a while, you know. Um
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: So now I don't know. I think I think I
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: was worried. I had a conversation with my dad about,
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: oh my god, am I going to fall off? Because
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: that was my fear. And having a child is that
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: if I have started family, and I think my dad's
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: like not at all, and I think I don't know
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: you're a parent, but I think you start to feel like, okay,
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: now I have to go even harder. Like it's the
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: thing is like I don't even like they eat first, right,
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: So it's like I'm not just feeding myself right now.
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: I'm I'm wanna hunt. I've got I'm wanna mission with
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: somebody on my back now, so I'm gonna be even
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: more vicious. You know I'm right. Then, you now have
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: a future. That's what I'm just telling you. You have
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: a future, and you're gonna reset your goals and guess what,
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: You're gonna create a curl box subscription for your child. Okay,
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: I know you I know your visionary now what you
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: ain't gonna do it sit around, go now that much
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: and I come out that now much with an idea
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: on how to make money. Come on now and you're
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: gonna make it big. And I want to I want,
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: I want to thank you. UH please uh give us
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: information so we can post it all on our social
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: media starting today in this week, you've been fantastic. Let's
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: let everybody know one more time when we get off
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: the air, how they can reach you, how they can
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: apply for the monthly uh subscription boxes for curl boxes. Okay,
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: the curl box list is open one day per month
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: and that's usually every third Saturday at Kenning of Eastern

- 1:37:16Speaker 1: for one man another man, I'm proud of him. You
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: don't know me, but I know the results of what
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: he's done and created. You're an amazing young lady. You're
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: gonna be a fantastic mom and keep doing what you're
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: doing and like I said, I want my daughter. We
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: grew up he just like you. You keep winning. Okay,
