- 1:30Speaker 1: just southside of Austin, which is a beautiful wooded area.
- 1:33Speaker 1: She's on the show to discuss her new book. Didn't
- 1:36Speaker 1: see that coming, please, welcome to money making Conversation. I'm
- 1:39Speaker 1: gonna calling my friend because she's a Texan girl. Rachel
- 1:42Speaker 1: Hollis well based on right now. I got a home
- 1:47Speaker 1: in Houston, but my headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. So so
- 1:50Speaker 1: I'm born in Houston, Texas, with the high school with
- 1:54Speaker 1: the college there. Got married in Houston, Texas. So Texas
- 1:58Speaker 1: is my my birth state. In my life style state.
- 2:00Speaker 1: So how does the field to live in Austin, my friend?
- 2:03Speaker 1: And how long have you been in Austin? It's steels fantastic.
- 2:07Speaker 1: I've been here a little over three years and moving
- 2:11Speaker 1: out of Los Angeles into Austin, UH is one of
- 2:15Speaker 1: the best decisions I've ever made in my life. Well,
- 2:18Speaker 1: I'm gonna just tell you this. I lived in Los
- 2:19Speaker 1: Angeles fifteen years, Okay, so I know the full five
- 2:22Speaker 1: at ten pm on a something not to be packed
- 2:25Speaker 1: like it's five pm, all right. I lived in the
- 2:29Speaker 1: first I lived in Hollywood right off for one on
- 2:31Speaker 1: one and um Hollywood right there, and then I lived
- 2:34Speaker 1: off and then I moved to Librea right there and
- 2:37Speaker 1: right across from UH liber topics. I lived in that
- 2:41Speaker 1: town homes over there, and then I closed it out
- 2:43Speaker 1: living in the palazzo right across from all the market,
- 2:47Speaker 1: the farmers market, right across from North have to walk
- 2:49Speaker 1: out of North Room the street light. I walked through
- 2:51Speaker 1: the street light, not going to North Room. That's how
- 2:53Speaker 1: I convenied my life or rate youel very successful either way,
- 2:58Speaker 1: I was living large. You're always living your right, but
- 3:01Speaker 1: that's what l A does for you. As allows you
- 3:03Speaker 1: the environment a live large, and then you move to
- 3:05Speaker 1: Austin and it just it just like immediately slows down.
- 3:09Speaker 1: So why was it important to have a move to
- 3:12Speaker 1: Austin for you and the most important in your family. Well,
- 3:15Speaker 1: I think, uh, for for several reasons. The first, the
- 3:19Speaker 1: impetus for the move was, I am a business owner,
- 3:23Speaker 1: and California is not very kind to business owners, but
- 3:27Speaker 1: Texas is. Uh, that is exactly right. Uh. So I knew,
- 3:34Speaker 1: I knew that I wanted to grow my company. I
- 3:37Speaker 1: wanted to grow my team, and I thought I had
- 3:39Speaker 1: a better chance of doing that in a state that
- 3:42Speaker 1: was a little bit more forgiving, was much lower cost
- 3:46Speaker 1: of living, just really practical reasons for why. And Austin
- 3:51Speaker 1: was one of my favorite cities in the world still is,
- 3:53Speaker 1: and so it made a ton of sense. But I
- 3:55Speaker 1: don't think I was even conscious of how much I
- 3:59Speaker 1: was gonna love getting back to the country and having space.
- 4:05Speaker 1: And I mean, I'm doing this interview with you, I'm
- 4:07Speaker 1: looking I'm on a hilltop. I'm literally looking out over
- 4:11Speaker 1: just just beautiful land, and it feels like such a blessing.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Every single day in my life, I look out at
- 4:16Speaker 1: this you, and I never take it for granted. I'm
- 4:19Speaker 1: so grateful to be here. You know, it's really important
- 4:21Speaker 1: that people understand what she's saying. Like, I grew up
- 4:23Speaker 1: in a little back store on me right. So I
- 4:24Speaker 1: grew up in the in the hood. Uh uh, the
- 4:27Speaker 1: six sisters, two brothers, both my parents, and the two
- 4:29Speaker 1: bedroom shotgun house. So space was always an issue. I
- 4:32Speaker 1: was always on top of people and so and so,
- 4:35Speaker 1: you know, people understand that created for a creative person
- 4:39Speaker 1: like me, I have to have I have to I
- 4:40Speaker 1: have to be able to walk out and not bump
- 4:42Speaker 1: into people. And so my home in Houston doesn't a
- 4:45Speaker 1: gated community is really nice. But then my property in
- 4:49Speaker 1: Atlanta is I have a little lake. And so when
- 4:53Speaker 1: I when I bought this property, I my wife, she
- 4:56Speaker 1: founded and I walked into the house. I said, I
- 4:58Speaker 1: wanted to buy my wife's you know, negotiate like that.
- 5:00Speaker 1: You just don't walk in the house and something like that.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Because I can look at the back and I saw water,
- 5:05Speaker 1: and water is such a common thing to me. And
- 5:08Speaker 1: so when I when I when I bring that up
- 5:10Speaker 1: because of the fact that you know, these are triggers
- 5:13Speaker 1: for you and you talk about that how because you're
- 5:16Speaker 1: really big into therapy and these triggers are important that
- 5:19Speaker 1: people understand how you can find that place where you
- 5:22Speaker 1: can calm your spirit, calm you, which in turn will
- 5:25Speaker 1: will calm your body because a lot of people don't
- 5:27Speaker 1: know the mental frame that you can can affect you
- 5:31Speaker 1: your body and a lot of difficult and a lot
- 5:33Speaker 1: of negative ways physically correct. Right. And and the thing
- 5:37Speaker 1: that I want to say for your listeners too, is
- 5:40Speaker 1: neither you or I grew up inside of privilege in
- 5:45Speaker 1: having money, so like I grew up super poor. Um
- 5:49Speaker 1: a lot of really difficult stuff in my childhood. And
- 5:52Speaker 1: so I just want to say for people who are listening,
- 5:54Speaker 1: who made me think, like, oh, it's so easy for
- 5:56Speaker 1: you guys to say find space or have of you
- 6:00Speaker 1: or well all of those things. I remember being a
- 6:02Speaker 1: little girl and going into my bed and closing my
- 6:08Speaker 1: eyes and using my imagination to imagine myself in a
- 6:11Speaker 1: different world than the one that I lived inside of.
- 6:14Speaker 1: I honestly didn't have the language to call that manifesting
- 6:18Speaker 1: or dreaming or naming big gold at the time, but
- 6:21Speaker 1: that truly was where I learned how to do it.
- 6:23Speaker 1: So you can envision the life that you want. You
- 6:27Speaker 1: can envision the space that you are hoping for years
- 6:30Speaker 1: before you ever make that thing manifest. So don't think
- 6:34Speaker 1: that you need the money or the house or the
- 6:36Speaker 1: property in order to find that piece for yourself. That
- 6:40Speaker 1: really is something that you can do through mindset and meditation.
- 6:44Speaker 1: This is I'm talking to Rachel Hollis her book. Didn't
- 6:46Speaker 1: see that coming. I'm tell you why I reve this
- 6:49Speaker 1: first time I've spoken to her. But you know, you
- 6:51Speaker 1: meet somebody, you read about them, and you do a
- 6:52Speaker 1: little research, you go, I love this person. Okay. First
- 6:55Speaker 1: of all, I don't know if you've heard this turn,
- 6:57Speaker 1: but you know of wich you Instagram account, and like
- 6:59Speaker 1: the way you stay because your your your toes point inward, Okay,
- 7:03Speaker 1: when you stay in there, that's called pigeon toad. I
- 7:07Speaker 1: don't know if you know. And I'm pigeon told. Okay,
- 7:12Speaker 1: so we're pigeon toad couple, pigeon to couple. Okay. So
- 7:15Speaker 1: so so I said, so I said, was she's pigeon
- 7:18Speaker 1: to it. I love her. I love her. And then
- 7:20Speaker 1: I'm reading the book and she says, she says this
- 7:22Speaker 1: funny line and she talks about, you know, swallowing a
- 7:25Speaker 1: watermelon seed and you think a watermelon will grow in
- 7:28Speaker 1: your stomach, raise your hand. That was Rashan McDonald. Rushan,
- 7:33Speaker 1: I thought Santa Claus was real. I'm just gonna let
- 7:36Speaker 1: you know. That's how that's how simple my mind. That's
- 7:39Speaker 1: how simple my mond and so and so. Then another
- 7:42Speaker 1: thing I laughed out loud, and I was so fun
- 7:45Speaker 1: just listening in your book. Was the was the because
- 7:48Speaker 1: was the birthmark? The little mold? Oh my god, I
- 7:52Speaker 1: wanted the birthmark so bad. That's hilarious, you know. I
- 7:57Speaker 1: just I just wounded a little mold somewhere. I can
- 8:00Speaker 1: just that's my little sexy spot. Right there's you, and
- 8:04Speaker 1: you got it right there, you know, and you're talking,
- 8:06Speaker 1: you talk about it. So so we hit it off
- 8:09Speaker 1: where we hit it off in four Waste, Austin, Texas. Okay,
- 8:12Speaker 1: then you're a pigeontoe, and a lot of people need
- 8:14Speaker 1: to tell the pigeontoe unless your pigeon toe. You don't
- 8:16Speaker 1: know what you're talking about. Okay, you don't know what
- 8:18Speaker 1: that means. And then she has a beautiful birthmark. And
- 8:21Speaker 1: then she actually believed she swallowed the water melons water
- 8:25Speaker 1: melon will grow in stomach Rash McDonald well, And in
- 8:30Speaker 1: the book, the reason that I'm talking about the watermelon
- 8:33Speaker 1: seed is that i want to ask you as a reader, one,
- 8:36Speaker 1: are the things that you used to believe as capital
- 8:39Speaker 1: t truth that you now know we are not true?
- 8:43Speaker 1: Because if you held onto the belief about Santa Claus
- 8:47Speaker 1: or the Easter bunny or you know, the you know,
- 8:50Speaker 1: if I if I swallow an apple seed like it's
- 8:53Speaker 1: poison and it's gonna kill me, then you can ask
- 8:56Speaker 1: yourself what as an adult right now, what limiting what
- 9:00Speaker 1: thing are you holding onto right now that could also
- 9:04Speaker 1: not be true? And that is especially powerful when the
- 9:08Speaker 1: thing that you believe is about your own self and
- 9:11Speaker 1: your own abilities. Right Like, I feel like when people
- 9:15Speaker 1: grew grow up without not a lot of things that
- 9:19Speaker 1: they they sort of go one of two ways. They
- 9:22Speaker 1: either have that become their reality, like the world was
- 9:25Speaker 1: out to get me. I'll never get ahead, I'll never
- 9:28Speaker 1: have anything. My family doesn't have the resources they have
- 9:32Speaker 1: all of these things that they keep telling themselves, or
- 9:36Speaker 1: you maybe did what you and I do, which is like, okay,
- 9:39Speaker 1: I didn't I didn't come from anything, but by God,
- 9:41Speaker 1: I have the ability to wake up today and try
- 9:44Speaker 1: my best, and I can learn and use resources that
- 9:47Speaker 1: are out there that are free, and I can grow
- 9:49Speaker 1: and become something more. So, what are the things that
- 9:52Speaker 1: you used to believe that are actually you know, for
- 9:55Speaker 1: a factor not true? Well, dang, what are you holding
- 9:58Speaker 1: onto right now in your life? And didn't need to
- 10:00Speaker 1: let go up as well? And that's that's so true,
- 10:03Speaker 1: because let let's go back to my belief. There was
- 10:06Speaker 1: a Santa Claus, okay, And I was born and raised
- 10:09Speaker 1: in the hood. So I was holding them to anything
- 10:12Speaker 1: that I felt made me feel good, that made me
- 10:15Speaker 1: feel to con take me away from the world that
- 10:17Speaker 1: I knew wasn't the world I wanted to be in
- 10:19Speaker 1: because I lived in want the community to the until
- 10:22Speaker 1: I was ten years old, and then we moved up
- 10:24Speaker 1: to a little bit better black neighborhood. But still when
- 10:26Speaker 1: I walked outside, it looked like the same neighborhood, black
- 10:28Speaker 1: people all around me. You know, I got on the
- 10:30Speaker 1: bus and black people getting on the bus. So it
- 10:32Speaker 1: wasn't like my environment changed. It was just that my
- 10:35Speaker 1: lifestyle got upgraded a little bit. And so I believe,
- 10:39Speaker 1: and I'm telling you Honestly, Rachel, I believe in Santa Claus.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I was fifteen years old. I really did. I believe,
- 10:44Speaker 1: and so I did not. The bubble was burst when
- 10:48Speaker 1: my dad woke me up, okay, woke me up. He said,
- 10:51Speaker 1: come on, boy, we gotta put these bikes together. Go
- 10:53Speaker 1: bikes together. What you're talking about? And he took me
- 10:56Speaker 1: outside and uh, and he pulled these bikes that could
- 10:59Speaker 1: go there. I was so. I was so I don't
- 11:02Speaker 1: know if you say naive, but I was just so
- 11:04Speaker 1: wanted to believe that there was something else out there
- 11:08Speaker 1: for me other than what I had known and lived
- 11:11Speaker 1: that he told me, there's no there's nothing that doesn't exist.
- 11:14Speaker 1: So don't worry about that. Let's put these bikes together.
- 11:17Speaker 1: We gotta put all this fruit underneath, these Christmas trees,
- 11:19Speaker 1: these train tracks, we gotta put all this stuff underneath
- 11:22Speaker 1: so everybody can be happy. The morning that was my
- 11:25Speaker 1: that was my entry into adulthood. Right there. I went
- 11:28Speaker 1: from I went from like totally believing in Santa Claus
- 11:32Speaker 1: to like, huh, I'm an adult now. And so that
- 11:35Speaker 1: was like the cold slap in the face for me,
- 11:37Speaker 1: because you know, sometimes parents don't understand that that transition
- 11:41Speaker 1: of information can really can really do something to a child,
- 11:45Speaker 1: and it really I'm not saying it ruined my life,
- 11:47Speaker 1: but it was a moment where where I was really safe.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I was in a very safe space. And that's what
- 11:53Speaker 1: you're talking about. When you hold on to information, it
- 11:55Speaker 1: can keep you in a very space safe space, but
- 11:57Speaker 1: the agers who can hinder your growth absolutely. And what's
- 12:01Speaker 1: so crazy is that people will hold on to the
- 12:05Speaker 1: certainty because they do feel comfort in it, even to
- 12:10Speaker 1: their own detriment. Right, So, I mean, I think your
- 12:14Speaker 1: the your story about finding that out, it like makes
- 12:18Speaker 1: my heart hurt. And I don't know why this just
- 12:21Speaker 1: popped into my head, but the fact that it's something
- 12:23Speaker 1: that you still think about and you can hear when
- 12:26Speaker 1: you tell that story that it is a painful memory
- 12:28Speaker 1: for you, even if it was sort of a rite
- 12:30Speaker 1: of passage. And of course your dad couldn't have thought,
- 12:33Speaker 1: you know, at fifteen years old, that you still maybe
- 12:35Speaker 1: we're holding onto that truth. I wonder what it looks
- 12:38Speaker 1: like in your life today, Like, have you ever thought
- 12:41Speaker 1: about I'm just thinking as we go into the holidays
- 12:44Speaker 1: and Christmas is coming around, like you ever thought about
- 12:47Speaker 1: doing something like putting effort into you know, do you
- 12:51Speaker 1: volunte volunteer or give presents or something to um UH
- 12:56Speaker 1: kids and foster care, or do you do something where
- 12:59Speaker 1: you are keep being the spirit of Santa Clause alive
- 13:02Speaker 1: other little kids. You know the thing about my personality
- 13:05Speaker 1: is that I always go back. Since I was eighteen,
- 13:08Speaker 1: I can always realize my mission is always to make
- 13:11Speaker 1: other people's lives better. I'm always be in a position
- 13:15Speaker 1: to make young people see there as opportunity, so I
- 13:18Speaker 1: make donations. I'm I'm tied to like specific programs, whether
- 13:22Speaker 1: it's entertainment program for kids who want to pursue entertainment careers.
- 13:26Speaker 1: I have a scholarship foundation at my alma made Universe
- 13:30Speaker 1: Houston for minority students who want math and science opportunities
- 13:33Speaker 1: and optometry opportunities and education. So so I've always had
- 13:37Speaker 1: that built in mechanism to make people feel good and
- 13:42Speaker 1: see opportunity. And then I'm a big Christmas decorator. Okay,
- 13:45Speaker 1: I loved that that that Christmas tree is going up
- 13:48Speaker 1: at my house. You know, I will spend money to
- 13:50Speaker 1: make sure people understand that I value and feel good
- 13:54Speaker 1: about the Christmas moment. The spirit of uplift, that spirit
- 13:57Speaker 1: of feel good, that that dominates my life. And so
- 14:00Speaker 1: when I'm reading your book, you know, don't see don't
- 14:02Speaker 1: didn't see that coming. You know your whole story when
- 14:04Speaker 1: you're telling from that tragic moment, you know mine is
- 14:07Speaker 1: nowhere near the tragic moment you're walking in your brother
- 14:10Speaker 1: Ryan and his suicide. But it was a Joe team
- 14:13Speaker 1: moment for me because I was in denial about there
- 14:17Speaker 1: was no Santa clause according to my parents when people
- 14:20Speaker 1: told me, I wrote letters. And when you can look
- 14:23Speaker 1: at the news, they always tell you he's flying over
- 14:25Speaker 1: the North Pole. They're telling that the news is telling
- 14:29Speaker 1: I just up and tell my friend. They would look
- 14:30Speaker 1: at me like, boy, you are so stupid. Really look
- 14:35Speaker 1: at the news. I validated. And so when you look
- 14:37Speaker 1: at the situation, like in regards to you, you see signs,
- 14:40Speaker 1: but you ignore them. And I think that that's what
- 14:43Speaker 1: happened in your brother's situation. There were signs and they
- 14:46Speaker 1: were ignored and then the reality is never a good
- 14:50Speaker 1: thing because the reality led to his suicide. So but
- 14:54Speaker 1: that was the point that the Joe to you, and
- 14:56Speaker 1: there was a writer of passage that you weren't prepared
- 14:59Speaker 1: to you. Yes, you had to do with it because
- 15:02Speaker 1: guess what it was thrust upon you? Yes, exactly. Well,
- 15:07Speaker 1: I think you know that is I think that most
- 15:10Speaker 1: people go through something in their lives that divides their
- 15:14Speaker 1: life in half. It's that pivotal moment, whether that happens
- 15:18Speaker 1: at age six or fourteen or thirty nine, where you
- 15:21Speaker 1: divide your life into before and after this thing. And
- 15:26Speaker 1: for me, the death of my older brother is my
- 15:29Speaker 1: before and after is it? You know, I describe it
- 15:33Speaker 1: as our family was was so was so not great,
- 15:40Speaker 1: but we were still clinging to something right. And then
- 15:44Speaker 1: Ryan's death was it literally was the stile that broke
- 15:48Speaker 1: the camel's back, like it just decimated whatever was left.
- 15:52Speaker 1: And as much as I have always been a really
- 15:56Speaker 1: mature even as a little girl, I was very mature.
- 16:00Speaker 1: I grew up, Like you said, you know, you grew
- 16:01Speaker 1: up in that moment. I grew up that day. Um.
- 16:04Speaker 1: I you know my parents really obviously you know, they
- 16:09Speaker 1: had just lost their son, but they really struggled with
- 16:13Speaker 1: keeping it together. And I remember being way too young
- 16:17Speaker 1: and you know, doing things that I shouldn't have been doing,
- 16:21Speaker 1: calling and telling family members that he was gone, or
- 16:24Speaker 1: helping to, you know, write the obituary, just things that
- 16:27Speaker 1: like I was fourteen, and in retrospect that would have
- 16:30Speaker 1: my own kids, I can look at that and see
- 16:32Speaker 1: how not okay it was. But at the same time,
- 16:38Speaker 1: I feel like that's what life is. Life are these
- 16:41Speaker 1: is this a series of moments where you you're you're
- 16:46Speaker 1: in it, and you're sort of asked to step up
- 16:48Speaker 1: and you're asked to figure it out. And um, that's
- 16:52Speaker 1: not the only time that's happened to me in my life,
- 16:54Speaker 1: and and and I think, honestly, it may not be
- 16:58Speaker 1: the only time for the rest of my life that
- 17:01Speaker 1: I go through something that difficult, which you know, I
- 17:04Speaker 1: think about this year, right, and everybody keeps talking about
- 17:10Speaker 1: and how they can't wait till it's over. I heard
- 17:12Speaker 1: it again on the radio this morning, like, oh, only
- 17:14Speaker 1: two more months until this horrible year is over. And
- 17:18Speaker 1: I just feel like people are in for such a
- 17:21Speaker 1: rude awakening, because I really do think that people are
- 17:24Speaker 1: clinging to the idea that on New Year's Eve at midnight,
- 17:28Speaker 1: suddenly all of our problems are going to go away,
- 17:31Speaker 1: and you're gonna wake up on New Year's day with
- 17:34Speaker 1: the exact same life that you had on New Year's Ease.
- 17:38Speaker 1: And this year, this really hard year of is not
- 17:42Speaker 1: the only hard year you're gonna live in the rest
- 17:45Speaker 1: of your life. Like, sit with that for a minute,
- 17:49Speaker 1: because I feel like people are like, I just got
- 17:51Speaker 1: to get through this thing. Well, great, what's going to
- 17:54Speaker 1: happen three years from now when something even more terrible
- 17:58Speaker 1: happens to you or some and you love, You're gonna
- 18:01Speaker 1: look back on how you handle this moment, this year,
- 18:05Speaker 1: this hardship, and you're gonna ask yourself, did you step up,
- 18:09Speaker 1: did you do what needed to be done, did you
- 18:11Speaker 1: keep going? Or did you pull the covers over your head?
- 18:14Speaker 1: And and I hope that something was going to change.
- 18:17Speaker 1: You know, it's really interesting when I hear you talk
- 18:19Speaker 1: like that, and because you know you you you live
- 18:23Speaker 1: a life where you are moll You're just a regular
- 18:26Speaker 1: person who just happens to be a visionary. And that's
- 18:29Speaker 1: why when I ever hear people talking about I can't wait.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Those people are looking at them and I have to
- 18:34Speaker 1: walk away because my mindset and your mindset is already
- 18:37Speaker 1: deep into one. If that's what planners do, you can't
- 18:41Speaker 1: make money thinking thirty days cycle, you're thinking six months
- 18:44Speaker 1: in a year because you you think about rent, you
- 18:47Speaker 1: think about budgets. That's how you p that's how you
- 18:49Speaker 1: plan success. People who are thinking thirty days out, they're
- 18:52Speaker 1: just people who are just in that rap wheel. They
- 18:54Speaker 1: just rolling just to be that bill, pay the light bill.
- 18:56Speaker 1: And you can never say money like that. And when
- 18:58Speaker 1: I when I look at what you're trying to do
- 19:01Speaker 1: with your life and what I've done with my life,
- 19:03Speaker 1: is that we're just trying to win, and we're trying
- 19:05Speaker 1: to win with advice on how you can win two
- 19:08Speaker 1: And that's the nice part about your brand. That's why
- 19:11Speaker 1: I associated so much with the way. I think we're
- 19:13Speaker 1: just doing in different ways. You know, you're being a female,
- 19:16Speaker 1: I'm being a male. But we're all trying to get
- 19:18Speaker 1: people to step up. But it was interesting. I've done
- 19:20Speaker 1: this interview with U re build you uh called impact Theory,
- 19:23Speaker 1: and it went VI it went back and it went viral,
- 19:27Speaker 1: and I was I was walking into a Whole Foods
- 19:31Speaker 1: and this guy walked up to me and when you
- 19:33Speaker 1: changed my life, you know, I'm trying to give me
- 19:39Speaker 1: some peanuts, Okay, I'm trying to give me some peanuts. Right,
- 19:42Speaker 1: this guy walks up to me, you with Sean McDonald, right,
- 19:44Speaker 1: I go, yeah, he said you changed my life. I
- 19:46Speaker 1: didn't know what he was talking about. And I and
- 19:48Speaker 1: I take that back to you in your book when
- 19:51Speaker 1: you're talking about lately walked up to you just exposed
- 19:53Speaker 1: to life in front of your son and you're trying
- 19:55Speaker 1: to figure out you know, this is a lifestyle that
- 19:58Speaker 1: you know that you we quested, but you didn't expect
- 20:01Speaker 1: the results to all this. And so so where I
- 20:04Speaker 1: get these moments, you know, do catch me off going
- 20:07Speaker 1: even though I know that I'm an award winning baker,
- 20:10Speaker 1: and so people have walked up. I'll be in the airport,
- 20:12Speaker 1: people go, there's my man, you can bake. I go, yeah,
- 20:14Speaker 1: you know, you know, yeah that's right because I do
- 20:16Speaker 1: post baking cupcakes on my on my social media, so
- 20:21Speaker 1: they should be able to recognize that. So how do
- 20:23Speaker 1: you deal with the unexpected even though you know you
- 20:26Speaker 1: should expect that. I guess the question I'm trying to
- 20:28Speaker 1: get to you right til to respond to you know.
- 20:31Speaker 1: I I think like, honestly, when you reach a new
- 20:36Speaker 1: level of success, you don't know what the heck is
- 20:39Speaker 1: going on? Right, You're like, whoa, this is wild? And
- 20:45Speaker 1: you know I do talk about this in the book.
- 20:46Speaker 1: It was very overwhelming for me to come to terms
- 20:49Speaker 1: with it, and I finally, did you know, I spent
- 20:52Speaker 1: months kind of vacillating between honestly, do I want to
- 20:57Speaker 1: do this? Which sounds well, I don't know how sounds,
- 21:00Speaker 1: but I really thought like, are you are you capable
- 21:04Speaker 1: of handling this much? Um like, honestly, like holding that
- 21:09Speaker 1: space for other people, are carrying other people's stories or
- 21:12Speaker 1: showing up in this way. And it took me a
- 21:14Speaker 1: long time to come to terms and to step into it.
- 21:17Speaker 1: And I'll tell you practically, and I don't know if
- 21:19Speaker 1: this will help your listeners, but this is definitely something
- 21:22Speaker 1: for other people who have any kind of a platform.
- 21:25Speaker 1: I honestly made a decision that if I was going
- 21:29Speaker 1: to continue to do this work, if I am in public,
- 21:33Speaker 1: I am ready to be there for other people. So
- 21:38Speaker 1: nine times out of ten, no, especially in COVID, nobody
- 21:41Speaker 1: stops me right Like I'm like, I've got a mask on.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Maybe they don't even know it's me. They nobody stops me.
- 21:48Speaker 1: But I get stopped and when I get stopped, it's
- 21:51Speaker 1: not hey, I love your work. It tends to be
- 21:54Speaker 1: something much more in depth or much more emotional because
- 21:58Speaker 1: of the kind of things that I talk glad I'm
- 22:00Speaker 1: right about and in that moment, I just think, like,
- 22:04Speaker 1: I want to show up for this community. I want
- 22:07Speaker 1: to do the very best I can for them. I
- 22:09Speaker 1: went on a run this morning at the lake, which
- 22:12Speaker 1: is sacred practice for me, and I was running and
- 22:16Speaker 1: someone you know started yelling my name. Now I could
- 22:19Speaker 1: ably got air pods and I could just keep on
- 22:22Speaker 1: renning and pretend that I didn't hear that person behind me.
- 22:25Speaker 1: But again, if if I'm going to do this, then
- 22:28Speaker 1: I have to be in community with these people, and
- 22:30Speaker 1: I have to be grateful for that. And I want
- 22:33Speaker 1: those women, especially to know that I see them. And
- 22:36Speaker 1: so I turned around and ran back to her name
- 22:38Speaker 1: was Andrea, looked her in the eye, heard her story
- 22:42Speaker 1: want you know, gave her a moment, and then we
- 22:45Speaker 1: just kept I just kept on running because that's what
- 22:49Speaker 1: this is. So for me, like I said, it helped
- 22:53Speaker 1: me to prepare myself for the fact that I don't
- 22:56Speaker 1: know if I'm going to get stopped, but if I
- 22:58Speaker 1: am I feel like I have been blessed with this platform.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Now I've worked my butt off to get here. But
- 23:06Speaker 1: I also believe that God gave me this opportunity. And
- 23:10Speaker 1: if I believe that someone greater, something greater than me,
- 23:14Speaker 1: gave me this moment, this opportunity, this community of fans
- 23:18Speaker 1: and readers, then I am going to own that responsibility
- 23:24Speaker 1: and be present for them if they have a moment
- 23:27Speaker 1: with me out in the world. UM agree with you.
- 23:31Speaker 1: I'm talking to Rachel Hollis. Hey, Rachel, okay, you know
- 23:33Speaker 1: that's Rael. I didn't see that coming like that. I
- 23:39Speaker 1: didn't see that coming. Uh you know, Rachel, I I
- 23:42Speaker 1: managed Steve Harvey for like sixteen years of infect you
- 23:45Speaker 1: those one good Friends and two thousand he was a
- 23:48Speaker 1: very popular comedian. And and then I did did the
- 23:51Speaker 1: Family if You Deal? I did the Hoppercolin Deals with
- 23:54Speaker 1: the books that so millions worldwide, was translated in over
- 23:58Speaker 1: thirty different languages, and each step that went along, more
- 24:02Speaker 1: fame came his way, and I just got to watch.
- 24:05Speaker 1: So I when I hear your story, I I look
- 24:07Speaker 1: back and reflect because I truly understand what you're talking about.
- 24:11Speaker 1: And he stepped along the way he used to fight it.
- 24:13Speaker 1: He used to fight that that that massive amount of
- 24:17Speaker 1: fame that came in the responsibility that came with that
- 24:19Speaker 1: fame and defining what was Hiver, What was his role
- 24:23Speaker 1: in all of this? I remember, you know, in in
- 24:26Speaker 1: twenty nine, two thousand nine, the book Think Like Act Like,
- 24:29Speaker 1: They Think Like a Man came out. You know, so
- 24:32Speaker 1: three million copies were on Oprah, like regular on Oprah.
- 24:35Speaker 1: We so sixty books in one day while sitting on
- 24:38Speaker 1: Oprah and uh, and you know, that's a massive amount
- 24:41Speaker 1: of books to sell. And uh and then uh and
- 24:44Speaker 1: then and then and then I did the Family Feud deals,
- 24:48Speaker 1: so we kind of crossed over. We went from a
- 24:50Speaker 1: very popular black comedian to uh, the comedian who was
- 24:54Speaker 1: being recognized as the people thought that was a joke,
- 24:58Speaker 1: a black comedian talking about relationship hips, and they just
- 25:00Speaker 1: exploded worldwide. And then with the Family Feud, and we
- 25:04Speaker 1: was crossing over, you know, even though our talk show
- 25:06Speaker 1: and then the talk show launched in twelve and so
- 25:10Speaker 1: I remember, Ineen, we was walking in Chicago and it's
- 25:13Speaker 1: large group of from the Asian community came over and
- 25:18Speaker 1: they couldn't speak English law, but they knew who he was,
- 25:21Speaker 1: and I went, I looked at him. I said, Steve,
- 25:24Speaker 1: your life would never be the same, brother, I said,
- 25:28Speaker 1: I said, they can't even speak English and they know
- 25:30Speaker 1: who Yeah, they know who you are. And it has
- 25:35Speaker 1: not been the same every since. And and I recognize
- 25:38Speaker 1: what you're saying, because you know, Rachel, You're only gonna
- 25:42Speaker 1: get bigger. You're You're you're introducing yourself and your brand
- 25:45Speaker 1: to my market. My markets are predominant African American market.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Of my followers are female. I think they just like
- 25:52Speaker 1: the way I bake. But of course I think I
- 25:54Speaker 1: do some nice things that motivate them to be successful
- 25:57Speaker 1: because they are entrepreneurs. Like I'm really big and pushing
- 25:59Speaker 1: our trepreneurs both male and female, and my my whole
- 26:03Speaker 1: volume of money making conversation. But when I when I
- 26:05Speaker 1: read your book, my biggest takeaway is that you know
- 26:08Speaker 1: your mom and and the testament. How women are becoming
- 26:13Speaker 1: such an entrepreneur or force in our society today. When
- 26:17Speaker 1: I look at women, you shouldn't you have to. You
- 26:20Speaker 1: can't wait till one because they are bigger opportunities for
- 26:23Speaker 1: I always believe this. My statement is that the COVID
- 26:26Speaker 1: as bad as it is allowed me to catch up.
- 26:29Speaker 1: It allowed me to level the plan field once I
- 26:32Speaker 1: got over the shock of the reality that, Okay, my
- 26:35Speaker 1: life is gonna change forever. And I didn't know how
- 26:38Speaker 1: many gloves I had to take to the grocery store.
- 26:39Speaker 1: I didn't know if I needed the matter. I didn't
- 26:41Speaker 1: know if I touched a gas pump? Should should? I should?
- 26:44Speaker 1: Like the parail, you can find that on the store.
- 26:47Speaker 1: What could I wash my hands? When? Once I got
- 26:48Speaker 1: over that shock, Rachel, I was good. I was good? Yeah, yeah, well,
- 26:54Speaker 1: And I think for this is always true for entrepreneurs
- 26:58Speaker 1: and business owners that I have such a heart for
- 27:00Speaker 1: this community as well, because I've been a business owner
- 27:03Speaker 1: for seventeen years. And what I know to be true
- 27:07Speaker 1: is we're not at the end of this. If we
- 27:12Speaker 1: found a cure today, we still would deal with the
- 27:16Speaker 1: economic fallout from what has happened for years. And I
- 27:21Speaker 1: don't say that to freak people out. I say it
- 27:24Speaker 1: because as leaders and as business owners, we have to
- 27:27Speaker 1: be aware. It's not something to have fear about. It's okay,
- 27:32Speaker 1: what do I need to do to make sure me
- 27:35Speaker 1: and my team, me and my family are good? How
- 27:38Speaker 1: do I need to show up. How do I need
- 27:40Speaker 1: a pivot? How do I need to serve the community,
- 27:43Speaker 1: the customer, the clients that I have, so that I
- 27:46Speaker 1: can continue to grow, so that I can continue to expand.
- 27:51Speaker 1: I think we've all seen this. We've seen businesses who
- 27:55Speaker 1: have not been able to handle the pressure, and we've
- 27:59Speaker 1: seen businesses that have pivoted. Like you know, I live
- 28:02Speaker 1: in Austin, right, so I remember Tito's Tito's vodka, which
- 28:06Speaker 1: is my favorite saying to mix into a cocktail. Um.
- 28:09Speaker 1: When it first happened, you saw all of these liquor companies.
- 28:13Speaker 1: They were like, all right, we're making hand sanitizer. Now.
- 28:16Speaker 1: We just saw. We saw restaurants that had never ever
- 28:20Speaker 1: had driver figure out how to do delivery or curbside.
- 28:23Speaker 1: We we just saw. I love it because we've seen
- 28:27Speaker 1: the human spirit. We've seen the human spirit show up
- 28:31Speaker 1: again and again. And you know, I think about this
- 28:34Speaker 1: a lot because I have pivoted. I feel like I've
- 28:38Speaker 1: pivoted twenty times since March. You know, my my business
- 28:43Speaker 1: was predominantly from live events that I can't do anymore,
- 28:49Speaker 1: and that you know, you pee your parts over that.
- 28:53Speaker 1: That's a that's a punch in the face and you
- 28:56Speaker 1: can sort of sit down. And so many people, so
- 28:59Speaker 1: many people were like, just you know, close down this thing,
- 29:02Speaker 1: just get rid of this thing. And I'm like, nope,
- 29:05Speaker 1: I will find a way. And So what I would
- 29:09Speaker 1: say to those of you who are listening, who you've
- 29:11Speaker 1: got that side hustle, you've got that business, you're you're
- 29:14Speaker 1: you're trying to grow and expand you have got to
- 29:18Speaker 1: stay focused on where you are going. You have got
- 29:22Speaker 1: to fill up your cup only with the words and
- 29:26Speaker 1: the inspiration of people who are thinking like you are thinking,
- 29:30Speaker 1: meaning like, go watch those motivational videos on YouTube, Go
- 29:34Speaker 1: listen to podcasts that are going to inspire you. Because
- 29:37Speaker 1: if you listen to the world, if you listen to
- 29:40Speaker 1: maybe your mama, your friends, maybe your spouse, people are
- 29:44Speaker 1: so scared right now, and their fear will take hold
- 29:48Speaker 1: of your heart if you let it. And so I
- 29:50Speaker 1: just keep my eyes on the horizon. I keep my
- 29:54Speaker 1: eyes on the horizon. I know where I'm going. I
- 29:56Speaker 1: do not let other people speak their fear into my heart,
- 30:00Speaker 1: and I stay focused. Because the biggest some of the
- 30:04Speaker 1: biggest companies in the world were built inside of a
- 30:08Speaker 1: recession and if you can just keep your eyes on
- 30:12Speaker 1: where you are going, to keep doing the work, keep
- 30:14Speaker 1: expanding the ways that you need to expand you will
- 30:17Speaker 1: come out the other side of this stronger and you
- 30:20Speaker 1: will have surpassed people who couldn't stay in the fight.
- 30:23Speaker 1: So just keep focused on where you're going and keep going,
- 30:28Speaker 1: my friend thirty minutes. Okay, our relationship has been flying along,
- 30:33Speaker 1: and it means it's been a great interview. Or Rachel
- 30:35Speaker 1: Hollis new book. Didn't see that coming, HarperCollins. I made
- 30:38Speaker 1: a lot of money with Happer Collins, so I know
- 30:40Speaker 1: they know me over there. Three number one best sellers
- 30:44Speaker 1: there were kept in the business there and I think
- 30:46Speaker 1: in two thousand nine. But again, thanks for coming to
- 30:49Speaker 1: my show. If you be a regular on my show.
- 30:51Speaker 1: And I said, yeah, thank you. You're amazing. Uh we are,
- 30:56Speaker 1: you know. We we obviously grew up differently, obviously your
- 31:00Speaker 1: ers are differently. But I so relate to what you
- 31:03Speaker 1: are experiencing, what you're trying to say to my audience
- 31:05Speaker 1: as well as to your audience. And uh, again, the
- 31:08Speaker 1: future is on the outside and uh, and the future
- 31:10Speaker 1: means we always speak to each other again in the future.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Thank you Rachel for coming. Bye bye, thank you. If
- 31:17Speaker 1: you want here more naication interviews, please go to Money
- 31:19Speaker 1: Making Conversations dot com. I'm Sean McDonald. I'm your host.
