- 0:00All right, welcome back to another episode of Run Mountain
- 0:03Peaks. I want to start off the podcast
- 0:06to say thank you one to everyone who has been listening and
- 0:11commenting and saying, you know, being very supportive and then
- 0:14to any of the new listeners supporters.
- 0:20I basically hacked into my old Instagram and kind of posted the
- 0:25podcast, made Instagram for the podcast and got some followers,
- 0:29a ton of comments and support. So I just want to say thank you
- 0:32to everybody. And if you're a new listener and
- 0:35tuning in, hopefully, you know, you get something from this
- 0:38podcast. Just going to talk about running
- 0:41the White Mountains races, ultras, training theory, a bunch
- 0:48of different stuff. So if any of that interests you,
- 0:50stay tuned. But yeah, thanks for everybody.
- 0:54The nice comments. Part of me was kind of like, you
- 0:58know, it was kind of like, oh, nice, you know, Congrats, good
- 1:00for you. This is awesome.
- 1:01And I'm thinking like, wow, guys, I've really I'm really
- 1:03just rambling in the back of my truck bed after runs here.
- 1:06But no, I really do appreciate all the comments and it was cool
- 1:10to just have a lot of support. So I really appreciate that.
- 1:15Today we're going to be talking about a handful of things.
- 1:18So the first, the mid state massive ultra marathon that was
- 1:22run last weekend, it goes from kind of the North End of
- 1:26Massachusetts to the South end. We had a couple locals slash
- 1:30friends come away with the W at that race.
- 1:33So we'll talk about that. And that was actually the race
- 1:36that kind of that was the first ultra that I have signed up that
- 1:39I signed up for. I was signed up for it twice.
- 1:42I never ran it, but it kind of got me into ultra running and
- 1:45also I met people through that race.
- 1:47So I'll kind of tell that story. So that race is a cool race.
- 1:52So we'll talk about that. We're going to talk about rolled
- 1:55ankles. This is like, I feel like
- 1:58October is like ankle roll season.
- 2:01You know, there's just lots of leaves, falling leaves in the
- 2:03trail. And I've dealt with a couple bad
- 2:06ankle rolls over the last year. So just wanted to talk about
- 2:12kind of how I work through those.
- 2:15And so you kind of can maintain your fitness.
- 2:17I feel like I've done a decent job of maintaining fitness.
- 2:19But yeah, ankle roll stink. If you trail run enough, you're
- 2:23going to roll your ankle. So something you just kind of
- 2:25kind of have to deal with and, and work through.
- 2:28So I'll kind of give some tips and just how I work through the
- 2:31ankle rolls. I'm going to talk about Strava
- 2:34versus Garmin. I heard a little bit about this.
- 2:37Garmin's threatening to not upload runs to Strava and it's a
- 2:42whole big thing. And then I saw something about
- 2:43Garmin versus Suunto, so I'll give my thoughts on that.
- 2:47I mean, I have some overall thoughts on Strava.
- 2:49And then I use a Garmin and I used to have a Suto, so I'll
- 2:53kind of give thoughts there. Next up, Courtney Dewalter runs
- 2:56her first marathon, her marathon debut.
- 3:00So we'll talk about that. I have as a note under that
- 3:03compound interest. Honestly, I kind of forget how I
- 3:05linked those two when I was thinking about it, but I'll talk
- 3:07about contract compound interest in terms of running next, the
- 3:14bigs backyard ultra. So this is I'm pretty sure it's
- 3:17the World Championships for backyard ultra this year.
- 3:22So we'll talk about that. Bubba's was just a couple a
- 3:24couple weeks ago, which is also a last man ultra, last man
- 3:29standing ultra marathon. So I'll just talk about that
- 3:31briefly. And then I'm going to do a
- 3:34little deer season update. And then the other bullets I
- 3:38have is van life and then biking with a group slash drafting.
- 3:42So those are the topics today and that's what we're going to
- 3:46go through. And I will say this to start off
- 3:50when I said I hacked into my old Instagram to kind of post the
- 3:53the run mountain peaks Instagram, it was not hacking.
- 3:56I literally I think I've been off Instagram for almost 2
- 3:59years. I typed in my username like or
- 4:02no my phone number, and I just typed in a password I used for
- 4:05everything. And before I feel like I even
- 4:07entered the last character in my password, I was in, it was back,
- 4:12it was activated and I'm like, wow, Instagram really, really
- 4:16wants to suck me in right now. And so yeah, post it took me
- 4:21like 10 minutes to figure out how to post a story, partly
- 4:24because I didn't have enough storage in my phone.
- 4:26So it was being weird. But yeah, Instagram kind of a
- 4:28kind of a crazy place. And after I, after I did the,
- 4:34the run mountain peak stuff, I'm like, you know what, it's been a
- 4:37while. Let's just do a good doom
- 4:39scroll. Let's just see if the algorithm
- 4:41still knows me. And it does.
- 4:45So I doom scrolled for a little bit.
- 4:47And I mean, I had, I've heard about AI, obviously I've heard
- 4:52about AI. I think it's crazy.
- 4:55I don't know what to think. I don't really understand that.
- 4:57I kind of understand, I don't understand it, but I did not
- 4:59realize the AI generated stuff. And so there were a couple
- 5:03videos that got me. I was, I mean, I can't even go
- 5:07through it, but like people like doctors that I are like fitness
- 5:11guys that I've heard about or I've heard things on like
- 5:15YouTube critiquing other people that I've heard of.
- 5:18I listened to this thing. I'm like, oh, wow, this is.
- 5:20And then a minute and I'm like, wait, he kind of sounds a little
- 5:22weird. I'm like, Oh my gosh, this is AI
- 5:24generated. There were some clips of like a
- 5:27deer breaks in through a window, a guy on the couch freaks out
- 5:30and then a bear breaks through the window and then they all
- 5:33start dancing. And like literally it takes me a
- 5:35second to see them all dancing together to be like, this is
- 5:38fake. And one of the one of the
- 5:40accounts was like an AI, like it had AI in the name.
- 5:44So then I just start looking at all the AI stuff and it was
- 5:47blowing me away. So Instagram is a crazy place
- 5:51and the AI stuff, I feel like you got to kind of flag.
- 5:54I am AI. No, I'm just kidding.
- 5:56I feel like there needs to be like flagging of like what is AI
- 6:00versus what is an AI just so you don't get caught off guard
- 6:04because I was caught off guard. But anyway, OK, that was the
- 6:07Instagram run mountain peaks Instagram.
- 6:11I'm just going to post the episodes there.
- 6:13OK, so first topic, the mid state massive.
- 6:17So like I said, this is an ultra marathon.
- 6:19It goes through the state of Massachusetts.
- 6:22So there's 100 mile, a 50 mile and A50 Ki believe.
- 6:27And the 100 mile basically starts in New Hampshire and then
- 6:30you traverse the mid state trail to like the corner of like the
- 6:35tri-state corner of like Rhode Island, Connecticut and
- 6:37Massachusetts. So then you go to the southern
- 6:39end of the of the border of Massachusetts and it's about 100
- 6:43miles. So that is the race.
- 6:45And like I said, we had a couple.
- 6:47So the winner of the 100 mile, Ryan Hunter, AKA Huss, he is
- 6:53somebody who I met through a friend, one of my good friends,
- 6:56Kevin. I met Ryan through him and so
- 7:02ran with him a handful of times. Super strong runner.
- 7:05He's really, he's done a lot of like uphill stuff and I think, I
- 7:09mean just a lot of a lot of ultras and he's been doing this
- 7:11for a long time. I think this was his first 100
- 7:14mile race and he goes and runs it in 19 hours, 29 minutes, the
- 7:18fourth fastest time ever and and wins that race.
- 7:23And when I saw that, I was like, Oh my God, Hus goes crazy.
- 7:28That is a super strong time. I don't know who has like the
- 7:31course record. I don't know if it's Koran
- 7:33Kowski, but I know Justin Kowski, who's just been on a
- 7:38roll for the last five years, I think ran like 19 1/2 or a
- 7:42little over his time. So either way, Hus runs a super
- 7:47strong time. So Congrats to him.
- 7:49Wins 100 mile and hopefully I see him in the somewhat near
- 7:54future and I can get a kind of a full recap.
- 7:56So Congrats to him. And then in the 50 mile, Ali
- 8:01Laville, who is I think toe and toe her slash Clark plumber are
- 8:08toe and toe with John Borrie for the top commenters of like the
- 8:12YouTube in the podcast, she wins the 50 mile and I think it was
- 8:15949. So the 50 mile and the 100 mile
- 8:20we got winners local New Hampshire runners really strong
- 8:24times and Congrats to them. I don't really know.
- 8:26I think it was good, good conditions last weekend.
- 8:30That show I think is I think there's about in 100 mile,
- 8:33there's about 10,000 feet of gain.
- 8:36I don't know what it is for the 50, but it's very kind of up and
- 8:39down. And I think there's a lot of
- 8:41kind of it's pretty technical and with the with the leaves and
- 8:44everything, it's a tough course. So they were in smoking time, so
- 8:49good for them. And yeah, the mid state massive.
- 8:52So like I said, this was the first ultra that I was
- 8:55officially signed up for. I think I talked about it at one
- 8:59point, but I saw kind of the the last man standing races and I
- 9:03thought that was like a cool like, Oh, I want to try to run
- 9:05100 miles. But I remember thinking like,
- 9:08oh, that would stink if you get to like 80 or 90 and then you
- 9:10just time out on a lap and you don't you're not able to get
- 9:13100. So I was like, all right, I want
- 9:15to try to run the mid state massive.
- 9:16It's 100 mile race and you don't like there's a time limit, but
- 9:19you don't time out if you have like a bad hour.
- 9:23So it was the first ultra that I signed up for.
- 9:27I think I had like a hamstring. I think I had a hamstring kind
- 9:31of like the summer before I did it and I wasn't really like I
- 9:35was. I was, I was doing a lot of
- 9:37hiking and some trail running up here, but I didn't want to
- 9:40really go down to the mid state and run kind of the flat stuff.
- 9:42I just wasn't running enough. I was kind of injured.
- 9:44So I ended up bailing that race and never did it.
- 9:49The next year I signed up again, but I ended up doing the Jigger
- 9:52Johnson 50 Miller instead that year.
- 9:55And then I think the year after I signed or I was going to pace
- 9:58up one of my friends at it and then they ended up dropping.
- 10:02So I never made it. So I've never made it to the
- 10:04course, to the race, but it's something that I've kind of
- 10:07followed a lot and something with the ultra running.
- 10:11A lot of times people ask like, oh, how do you meet all these
- 10:13like people? Like where do you meet these
- 10:16people? Just running like crazy, crazy
- 10:18miles. And honestly, the first ultra
- 10:21runners that I met was through the mid state massive.
- 10:24I I didn't, I didn't know anything about really ultra
- 10:27running. I wanted to run 100 miles.
- 10:29And I remember I had like a Strava and I think like I was,
- 10:34it was just like my, my brother or something that I fall like I
- 10:37don't even know. I barely I didn't use it a ton,
- 10:39whatever. But this guy Josh Adsit reached
- 10:43out and was like he was signed up for the race too.
- 10:47We were both from Merrimack and he reached out to me, I think on
- 10:51Strava or something like that, or he followed me or something.
- 10:54And I was like, oh wow, this is kind of, you know, I think there
- 10:56was three of us from Merrimack that year.
- 10:57So him and another guy, Josh, both Josh's.
- 11:00And it it turned out, I forget how I knew this, but he lived
- 11:04like a half a mile from me. So I didn't know.
- 11:08I didn't know. I don't know.
- 11:09I don't think there you could even message on Strava.
- 11:11But I ended up really just walking down the road knocking
- 11:15on his door. And I eventually, I think I, I
- 11:17tried like once or twice and I eventually just like was like,
- 11:20Hey, I'm, I'm Andrew. I'm both signed up for this.
- 11:22And we chatted for a while and he was somebody had been doing
- 11:26ultras for a little bit and like gave me some good advice, gave
- 11:30me this awesome book to read about ultra running.
- 11:32He had a mentor who wrote a book.
- 11:34So he he gave me a book and it, it was definitely kind of like
- 11:38inspiring. It was nice to for someone else
- 11:41to be like, yeah, like, you know, this is awesome.
- 11:42Let's do this race. And the the goal was to do it.
- 11:45I didn't end up doing it. I think he went that year, but I
- 11:48think he had issues and he didn't finish.
- 11:51But anyway, so that's why I met him.
- 11:52So it's kind of through the ultra sign up races Strava.
- 11:56And then the next spring he was hosting an event at his on at
- 12:01his property. He had like a little tiny farm
- 12:04and woods in the back and he was hosting this event for any local
- 12:08person to come by. It was like not a backyard
- 12:11ultra, but it was like he had maybe like a 2/3 of a mile loop
- 12:15through the woods with like another loop that you could go
- 12:18through like kind of like a conservation area.
- 12:20You could marry that loop and do a little longer loop.
- 12:23And he was like anyone who wants to run for 24 hours or like 2
- 12:28days or whatever, come on by. We're gonna have like tents, you
- 12:32know, food, snacks, a bunch of people, music.
- 12:34And I pretty much just went to that.
- 12:36I didn't know anybody and I showed up and I met a handful of
- 12:40people, like all kind of ultra runners, trail runners, the
- 12:44people who do this stuff and a couple of people that I've I've
- 12:48known for a while now and friends with, run with.
- 12:52And I think like meeting all of those people.
- 12:54I remember talking to a few of them and just hearing stories of
- 12:57like they've done 100 milers, they've done ultras.
- 13:00And I was just so like fascinated, like holy smokes.
- 13:04And then you just get to see these people who can run 100
- 13:07hundreds of mile doing through hikes, all these crazy stories.
- 13:11I remember I just like ran. I think I ended up running 30
- 13:13miles or something that day, just listening to like stories
- 13:18from these people. And I think when you start kind
- 13:22of running with those people and meeting those people, like I
- 13:26think you're all drawn to like, you know, these ultras, these
- 13:28events, there's not like a ton of them.
- 13:30So, you know, as you come together, all the people kind of
- 13:34from the woodworker doing this kind of come together for these
- 13:37events and they meet people and then you get out for runs with
- 13:39people and then you hear stories.
- 13:41And like after you do that for a while, like I started, did a
- 13:44couple volunteering in a couple races, did a couple races, did
- 13:49some runs, you know, obviously was on Strava more at that
- 13:52point. So it's kind of meeting people
- 13:54through that and you just kind of like, yes, start running with
- 13:57these people. And after a while you kind of
- 13:59start to like normalize like running for a 24 hours or
- 14:04whatever, 100 miles, 50 miles, 50K, whatever, like 20 mile
- 14:08training runs like nothing through hikes, all these things.
- 14:12And then like when you kind of talk to people who are not in
- 14:14the sport and you're like, oh, I had a 20 mile run.
- 14:16I'm, I'm training for the, I think I signed up for this race.
- 14:18I'm going to do 100 miles or whatever people like, what are
- 14:21you, what are you talking about? I'm like, Oh yeah, it is kind of
- 14:24a crazy hobby, but it's cool that like more people are
- 14:28getting into it. I feel like ultras are getting
- 14:29very popular, trail run is getting popular, hiking, all
- 14:33this stuff, which is awesome. Like there's just more events
- 14:36and more people doing it and, and more kind of information out
- 14:40there for you to kind of like train and and figure stuff out
- 14:44like gear. And so it's cool and like
- 14:47meeting those people and a lot of these people that I met
- 14:50really helped me like with the learning curve of like how to
- 14:53train and like what gear to use and, and just like opening your
- 14:57eyes, like what is actually possible.
- 15:01And so yeah, I met a handful of guys there.
- 15:03And then from there, one of them I run with a good amount still
- 15:08and then a few other people run into each other once in a while
- 15:11and it's always good to catch up.
- 15:13And from there just spirals out. You just meet more and more
- 15:16people like that and, and eventually you're just running
- 15:19all the time and that's your whole life.
- 15:21So you got to be careful with those running.
- 15:23But it is kind of like a cool community and there's more and
- 15:29more opportunities and events. Like I always tell people, go to
- 15:31events, volunteer, just like go check it out.
- 15:35Just a ton of cool people. So that was a mid state massive
- 15:38wrap up. Next we're going to talk about
- 15:41rolled ankles. So yeah, I think I alluded to it
- 15:45a little bit. I had, I've had two bad rolled
- 15:48ankles in the past year. So I'm going to talk about
- 15:50rolled ankles. I feel like some people are
- 15:51rolling their ankles right now. I had one actually two weeks
- 15:54ago, a little a baby one. And yeah, if you trail on for
- 15:59long enough, you're going to roll an ankle, especially in the
- 16:01White Mountains, like the trails are super technical.
- 16:03There's lots of little rocks and, and stuff and you're going
- 16:07to roll your ankle. But I think there's like a good
- 16:11news and a bad news for rolled ankles.
- 16:13I think the good news is you can mostly run through it, train,
- 16:17you can definitely train through it.
- 16:18You can kind of run through it, you know, unless it's really bad
- 16:22and we'll talk about different, the severity of ankle rolls, but
- 16:26you can train through it. That's good.
- 16:29But the bad news is, you know, for most people, it takes like
- 16:34months for it to feel better. So it's going to be kind of like
- 16:36a nagging thing that you really have to be careful of and not
- 16:42overdo or re roll it. So First off, like the grades of
- 16:46ankle rolls, I'm not a doctor. Go if you have an ankle roll, go
- 16:49to a doctor. But I think it's a grade one,
- 16:50grade two, grade 3 and I have a grade 0A Grade 0 is like when
- 16:54you roll your ankle, it hurts, but you can kind of keep running
- 16:57and after like a couple minutes, it doesn't really hurt.
- 16:59And at the end you run, it doesn't really hurt.
- 17:01It's going to be maybe a little sore, but the next day you're
- 17:02like good, that's like a little baby ankle roll.
- 17:05I'm going to call that a grade 0.
- 17:07So you have some of those and it kind of scares you and then
- 17:11you're like, oh, OK, no, I think I'm good.
- 17:12But don't do that again. And there's no like swelling or
- 17:16bruising or anything like that. Great.
- 17:18And you pretty much if that happens, I don't change my
- 17:21training at all. It usually doesn't bother me.
- 17:24Grade 1 is like, I think like you stretch the ligaments in the
- 17:28tendons. It hurts, but you can run it off
- 17:32in a couple minutes. And then after you run, you're
- 17:34kind of sore. It might be like a tiny bit
- 17:37bruise, but or like a little bit bruised, a little bit swollen
- 17:41and it's sore, It's sore the next day, but like after a week
- 17:45it pretty much goes away and it's like a non issue.
- 17:50Those are like great ones and obviously those are scarier
- 17:53because they hurt a little bit more on the trail and you kind
- 17:56of have some repercussions after, but it's something that
- 17:58you don't really need to adjust your training to.
- 18:01I usually take like maybe I'll bike a couple times more that
- 18:04next week to give it a little bit of time and then if it's
- 18:07feeling better, like back to training as normal.
- 18:11So those happen and again, a little bit scarier but but not
- 18:14the end of the world. Grade 2 is like you partially
- 18:19tear your tendons. These ones hurt when it happens.
- 18:23It's hard to shake off and then there is bruising and swelling
- 18:27when you're done and the next days weeks, it's going to hurt.
- 18:33And these are like a little bit more serious.
- 18:35And that's kind of like I think I've had two good grade twos in
- 18:39the last year that I'll talk through.
- 18:41And if you push it too much, if you re roll it, these are the
- 18:46ones that it can take like a couple months plus to feel like
- 18:50100% back from. So those are grade 2.
- 18:55Those are those are not good. You want to do grade one of
- 18:57grade zeros if you can. If your ankles swollen at the
- 19:01end and really bruised, that is not good.
- 19:04And then a grade three I think is like a full tear.
- 19:06You it's like almost like a broken ankle.
- 19:08It's it could be worse than a broken ankle.
- 19:10You can't really walk after. Oh yeah, the grade twos you can
- 19:14kind of limp off eventually, but it does really, still really
- 19:18hurt to run grade threes. You can't even limp off or, or
- 19:21run. Those are really bad.
- 19:24So if you have a grade 3 like that's that's you got to go to
- 19:27the doctors you I don't know if surgery or whatever, but grade 3
- 19:30is the worst. I wish that upon nobody.
- 19:33Not my worst enemy because that's going to take a while.
- 19:36But if you're in that like grade 2, like I rolled it really bad,
- 19:40like I don't have to go to the doctor, but it's just going to
- 19:42hurt. Here is my advice.
- 19:47So I had one last, I think actually November and during the
- 19:53month of October, I ran the Kilkeny Ridge race in
- 19:55mid-september, took a couple weeks off and then got back to
- 19:58training. So I remember I wasn't doing a
- 20:01ton of like mountain stuff, trail stuff, because I was kind
- 20:05of building back from, from Kilkenny.
- 20:07And I remember thinking, I don't want to roll my ankle.
- 20:12You know, going crazy. So I'm going to stick to more
- 20:16like roads, rail trails. And I was doing a workout on a
- 20:19rail trail and the one kind of like pothole in the whole rail
- 20:24trail cut filled in with leaves that I didn't see.
- 20:27I cracked my ankle. Good on it.
- 20:29I think I was running probably like a 6 minute pace, which I
- 20:34think what I've noticed is how fast you're running determines
- 20:38like the grade. And that's obviously like a lot
- 20:39of people, like, duh. But the faster you're running,
- 20:42it's just a lot more force. So if you're doing like a
- 20:45workout or running hard, running hard downhill, that's when
- 20:48you're at the most danger for getting in that grade 2 or even
- 20:52the grade 3 ankle roll. So whenever you're on trail,
- 20:55especially in the fall and you're running hard, be very
- 20:59careful about ankle rolls, especially, Yeah, when you're
- 21:04running fast because if you're running, you know, just so you
- 21:07can easy pace, it's hard to get like a good, good a grade three,
- 21:10grade two, grade 3 ankle roll. But if you're running hard, that
- 21:13is that's when you can get in trouble.
- 21:16So like in the fall, like this fall, I've been doing hard
- 21:18uphills because it's harder to roll your ankle uphill and then
- 21:22easy downs because I'm still kind of recouping from my ankle
- 21:26roll. So that's just a word of the
- 21:27wise. You're running fast in the fall.
- 21:29Be careful. OK, so yeah, so I was running on
- 21:37the rail trail and that was a really bad anchor roll.
- 21:39And so like, what do I do to get back on track?
- 21:45So I think I've had ankle rolls before where I'm like, listen to
- 21:51a David Goggins, you know, pain. I don't feel pain.
- 21:54I'm trying to learn things out here.
- 21:56And I push through it like I'm not going to let this affect,
- 21:59you know, I have these goals. I don't want to lose fitness.
- 22:01I'm going to train through it. And you kind of can because when
- 22:06you're running, you're not supposed to roll your ankles.
- 22:09So like you use your ankle tendons and ankle muscles, but
- 22:14like if you're not re rolling it, it's not like you're doing a
- 22:17ton more damage. And then once you get warmed up,
- 22:20it doesn't feel as bad. So you can kind of train through
- 22:22it. And I've done that before, but
- 22:24every time I do that, it gets worse before it gets better.
- 22:28And so my philosophy is if you have a really bad anchor role,
- 22:32grade one or grade 2, take a week off, no running or if
- 22:37anything maybe like Stairmaster, uphill treadmill, that's it.
- 22:40Everything else bike I don't swim but like swim cross train
- 22:45for like non bearing to give it that time because if you give it
- 22:49a week, that usually does help. Now you don't have to stop
- 22:52training because if you're doing the bike, bike is not weight
- 22:56bearing. So you're not and you're not
- 22:58rolling your ankle on the bike, you have no chance of rolling an
- 23:00ankle. Although once in a while when I
- 23:02clip out of my bike, I do have a chance of rolling my ankle.
- 23:04But yeah, you can't really do damage on the bike.
- 23:09So just cross train it's way safer and do that for a week
- 23:15because the worst thing that you can do when you have a bad ankle
- 23:18roll is re roll it especially quick.
- 23:20Like that is like the number one thing you have to avoid.
- 23:24Do not re roll it. That would be like above, like
- 23:27icing or like all these things, active recovery.
- 23:30Do not re roll it. Number one.
- 23:32I think it's like they call it the price protect, protect and
- 23:36rest. Those are the first two things
- 23:37you want to do. So do not re roll it at all
- 23:39costs for for the week, couple weeks after.
- 23:44So cross train and then so yeah, what is the price protect rest?
- 23:54I think it's like elevate avoid anti inflammatories.
- 23:58You can look it up, but there's like basically you want to stay
- 24:00off it and you want to get blood flow to it.
- 24:02So you want to keep you really want to keep training.
- 24:05Like you don't. If you stop training for a week
- 24:07and don't do anything and just like pick up training again,
- 24:09it's going to hurt the same as if you pick it up in another
- 24:12day. So I got a Caterpillar,
- 24:14Caterpillar coming after me. Hold on.
- 24:18See that guy? Holy.
- 24:19Oh, OK. For the people listening, I'm
- 24:24sorry. All right.
- 24:26So yeah, you want to take care of it.
- 24:28They say avoid anti inflammatories.
- 24:30Honestly, I the last couple times I've just been taking
- 24:34Advil for like a week just to make me feel better.
- 24:38I don't know if it helps or hurts, but look it up and let a
- 24:41doctor tell you what to do there.
- 24:43And then any like mobility stuff, walks and cross training
- 24:48is going to get blood flow and like help up that recovery
- 24:51without damaging it. So that's what I would do for
- 24:54the week. If it's Grade 1 and you're
- 24:56feeling better, I would probably maybe keep cross training a
- 25:00little bit, but then mix in like a run every other day the next
- 25:02week and see how it feels. Once you give it that initial
- 25:05rest, you pretty much want to start giving it doses of running
- 25:11again and like see how it reacts.
- 25:13So I think a good rule of thumb is like that if it's like a 2 or
- 25:17a three on the pain scale, as long as it doesn't get above
- 25:19that during the run or after the run, you're OK.
- 25:23If it gets to that threshold and you're once you start
- 25:26incorporating running again and it does get to that threshold,
- 25:29back off and cross train for a couple days and just test that
- 25:33out. And for grade 2, maybe do that
- 25:37for like a couple more weeks longer than a Grade 1.
- 25:42And then slowly build your mileage up.
- 25:44Because what I've done is the past is like I give it a week to
- 25:46rest or I don't. And then it feels better after
- 25:50like a week or two. And I just ramp up my training
- 25:52again to like kind of close to what I was before.
- 25:55And then it gets like worse than it was a week ago.
- 25:57Like I for the next couple weeks, I've just gone backwards,
- 26:00which is what you don't want. So you got to really make sure
- 26:04that it's not getting painful during your runs or the next day
- 26:09and after your runs. Because sometimes like the next
- 26:11day I'll wake up and it's really sore and I'm like, it didn't
- 26:14feel bad during the run, but it is sore today.
- 26:16And I think you just have to be honest with yourself.
- 26:18If it hurts more than like a 2 or a three, you have to cross
- 26:22train or you're going to make it worse.
- 26:25So that's my philosophy. Start incorporating running up
- 26:30until that pain threshold and then kind of like adjust.
- 26:33And if this takes weeks, it could take a month of doing two
- 26:37runs a week and then two days of biking after it until it starts
- 26:41to feel better. And in my experience, like just
- 26:43sticking that out for as long as it takes is the best way to get
- 26:46back on track. But the good news, like I said,
- 26:49you can train through it. So I don't really stop the
- 26:51training days. I do cross training.
- 26:53But the other thing too, and I made a YouTube video about this
- 26:55of like 5 tips, training through injury.
- 26:58And this, you know, obviously relates to anchor rules is if
- 27:01you're training for mountain efforts, trails up hills, the
- 27:06uphill portion of trail running is so much less impact than the
- 27:11downhill. So one thing that I do to keep
- 27:15your fitness, you know that that zone one, zone 2 aerobic
- 27:18fitness, just do cross training and then to keep the strength
- 27:22and like the higher output, I will do Stairmaster workouts.
- 27:26So when you're running on a steep incline, it's hard to go
- 27:30fast, obviously, and it's a lot less impact on the ankle.
- 27:33And so I can actually do like grade 2 ankle sprain.
- 27:38I maybe do a bike workout the week after and then the week
- 27:40after that. So two weeks out from a really
- 27:42bad ankle, ankle sprain, I do like a, a pretty much a full
- 27:47running workout just on the Stairmaster.
- 27:50And I've noticed that like that doesn't hurt it as much as just
- 27:52like an easy run would. So as soon as it's not giving
- 27:56you that three out of 10 pain, start doing Stairmaster workouts
- 28:01or uphill treadmill workouts, or go to a mountain and run up it
- 28:04and then walk down it because you can still get that higher
- 28:07output. And I said I had a bad anchor
- 28:11roll last last fall. It took me a few months, like I
- 28:14think in the spring I was finally starting to feel better.
- 28:17I had another one in July after I did lodge Dodge, which was
- 28:20very disappointing and kind of frustrating.
- 28:22It kind of screwed up my year and I'm just feeling better.
- 28:25But over the summer, like I really haven't lost fitness.
- 28:28I think I'm probably about the same as I was in the spring and
- 28:30I've been running like 20 miles a week for two plus months,
- 28:36which is I'm usually around like 50 miles. 4550 miles a week is
- 28:40kind of like the sweet spot with some cross training for me right
- 28:42now. So much less training volume,
- 28:46but I've been doing a bunch of stair workouts.
- 28:48I've been doing stuff on the bike and I've had some good this
- 28:51fall. Like I said, I've been doing
- 28:52some uphill efforts and I've had some decent uphill efforts that
- 28:55I'm happy with. So like my fitness is still
- 28:57there. You can keep your strong legs.
- 29:00I think the key is just keep training and really give it
- 29:03time, but don't just be like, oh, I'm just going to go easy
- 29:07and lose all my fitness and my leg strength and I'll just have
- 29:10to like wait three months so it doesn't heal.
- 29:12Like I think train how you were training before, but just do
- 29:15more easy runs, easy runs on the bike and then do more uphill
- 29:20workouts that are less impact. And you know, that can take a
- 29:27few months and it stinks, but you can still train, you can
- 29:31still get out. And so it's better than having
- 29:34like some sort of overuse injury where you really have to
- 29:36overhaul your training and you don't know what's causing it.
- 29:39And anchor roll, you know what caused it, Don't roll it again.
- 29:42You can train through it. And then once you get back to
- 29:45healthy, you're probably just a little bit scared to bomb
- 29:47downhills a little bit more, which could be good for you.
- 29:51I've definitely been more hesitant bombing downhills
- 29:54recently. So yeah, that was that's how I
- 29:58deal with an ankle roll. So that's my ankle roll stuff.
- 30:02And like I said, I have a YouTube video on just injuries
- 30:04in general. Some of those principles apply
- 30:06to any injury, like the lower impact going uphill.
- 30:10And I think most injuries you can train through like Kelton
- 30:14Cohenberg of steady State. He's APT, super smart guy.
- 30:20He was a, he's a, he is and was a really good runner.
- 30:23Like he ran in college super fast and still is a really good
- 30:27runner. He I've been to him before and
- 30:30he and I agree with him. You can almost train through
- 30:33pretty much anything unless you like tear a tendon or you have
- 30:37stress fractures. You can really train through
- 30:40everything it's just adjusting your training.
- 30:43So just adjust your training accordingly.
- 30:47OK next topic is going to be the Strava verse Garmin dilemma.
- 30:54I haven't looked into it too much.
- 30:55It sounds like Garmin is like suing or thinking about a
- 30:59lawsuit about no longer uploading runs directly to
- 31:03Strava without like marking them in Strava as like uploaded from
- 31:07Garmin. And I think there's like a
- 31:10deadline November 1st. If they don't get something
- 31:12worked out by then, they're going to stop uploading to
- 31:16Strava, which I feel like that's it's almost like the the
- 31:19government shutdown. Like, you know, you always hear
- 31:22about government about the shutdown and it never does
- 31:24except for the summit did for me.
- 31:27I feel like this is maybe just like a threat.
- 31:30Government wants to get what they want, but who knows.
- 31:34I mean, if they get to the to the point they're both being
- 31:36like they can't agree on something and Garmin stops
- 31:40uploading to Strava, I think that's going to have detrimental
- 31:43effect to a lot of runners. So I guess first, just like
- 31:46Garmin watches, in my opinion, they are the best watches.
- 31:51Western States 100 does like a survey of all the runners and I
- 31:55think Garmin has consistently been the number one watch brand
- 31:59that's worn there. It used to be Garmin and then
- 32:03Suto was #2 and I think like now Koros is number 2 over sunto.
- 32:09And personally, I think Garmin is the best watches as far as
- 32:13like GPS accuracy, reliability, all these watches.
- 32:17I mean, price point is a different thing.
- 32:18But like all these watches, their battery life is like
- 32:21getting insane. The heart rate monitor sensors
- 32:24are getting a lot better. But what I've noticed is like in
- 32:28the White Mountains where you don't have a lot of service,
- 32:29it's super thick woods. Garmin has been the best GPS
- 32:34signal. You're not waiting on your runs
- 32:36for a signal. Your runs don't get wonky for no
- 32:39reason. And so I think Garmin's like the
- 32:42number one watch worn. And for me, like I wear a Garmin
- 32:46and I used to have a Sunto and I did have problems with it up
- 32:51here a lot of the time with just connected the GPS satellite,
- 32:54like trusting it sometimes like the moving time is just way off.
- 33:00Your pieces are way off. Like you're you can get super,
- 33:02you can get less mileage, you can get more mileage.
- 33:04I mean, there were some runs where I got like a mile extra on
- 33:07my Sunto. Like if I could just, yeah, if I
- 33:11could go to a race and just submit my Sunto effort, they
- 33:13would think I was like a pro because of like how far off the
- 33:17the mileage in pieces can be, at least in the White Mountains.
- 33:21So I think Garmin is a is a better watch.
- 33:23And this would be a huge deal if they stop uploading to to
- 33:26Strava. And so they do have a Garmin
- 33:27connect and I don't usually I don't have Strava most of the
- 33:31time, like I'll log on if I if I once in a while to Strava and
- 33:36post some stuff, but I typically just have everything go to
- 33:39Garmin connect. And I don't really get too much
- 33:42into like mileage every week I really train by like I know how
- 33:46many hours I've been doing. And so I'm not like a huge like
- 33:51looking at my Strava graph. But I don't think Garmin like
- 33:55the data. It's just hard to kind of like
- 33:56look at the data. I don't know.
- 33:57It's not user friendly. No, like all of the pub, the
- 34:00Strava segments, like there, I there might be Garmin segments
- 34:03like nobody cares about them. So as far as like a training
- 34:07app, I think it's fine to look at your data, But I think the
- 34:10big thing that Strava have is like the usability.
- 34:13It's it's like the Apple. It's like the phone is just
- 34:16better. The app is just better.
- 34:17Everyone use it uses it. And and the Strava segments I
- 34:24think are a big deal. Like segments.
- 34:26I feel like some of them are getting like almost a race.
- 34:29They're like almost races doing, doing some of these huge
- 34:31segments. Like obviously you have like the
- 34:33premier segments slash FK TS, like the Prezi traverse segment,
- 34:37the golden segment in New England.
- 34:40And I think it is a cool way to like run the whites has been
- 34:43doing their throw downs where it's Strava segments.
- 34:45I think it's a cool way to have competition, get involved, see
- 34:50other people's times. And I don't think any other app
- 34:53is going to come close to that. And so if Garmin stops letting
- 34:58people upload to that, people are going to be pissed.
- 35:02And I don't know if they would leave Garmin, I don't know what
- 35:05would happen. I think there would be chaos.
- 35:08And I think Shrava ultimately would win out.
- 35:10Like, I don't know if you'd be able to like download a GPX
- 35:13file, like strip of Garmin and then upload separately, but I
- 35:16think that's what people would start doing.
- 35:18So I think it's a huge deal. I think Garmin is the best wash.
- 35:22And I think Strava is the best profile for like running.
- 35:26And I think it's like they they're talking about doing an
- 35:27IPO and it's like billions of dollars for this company.
- 35:31And so it would stink if they did not figure it out.
- 35:35And people had to go even for a week without their their, their
- 35:40Strava runs. So they need to get that figured
- 35:44out for the people. That's my thoughts there.
- 35:49Next up, Courtney Dewalter, her marathon debut, She runs two
- 35:53hours and 49 minutes. I think that's like a six 3640
- 35:58minute pace. And I think when I saw this was
- 36:02a few weeks ago, so I have not been fully in the loop, but when
- 36:05I saw that, my initial gut reaction is she is the toughest
- 36:13ultra runner. I mean, she's the GOAT of ultra
- 36:15running men or women. She's the best.
- 36:19I think to go like what she's done is just absolutely insane.
- 36:22Go look at her ultra sign up her her was it a Triple Crown?
- 36:28Like she has done insane races and she I mean she is just
- 36:35tough. Like she talks about the pancave
- 36:36and I legitimately think she probably has one of the the
- 36:39deepest pancaves in the world because like 249 marathon is
- 36:46flying. Like I think it was a hot and
- 36:48windy day. I think they ran it in
- 36:50Minnesota. But 249 marathon is not like
- 36:53like the world record for a woman.
- 36:54I don't know. It's it's in the it's definitely
- 36:56under 210, I would think, or somewhere around there.
- 36:59Like, she is not the just crazy genetic freak athlete that some
- 37:05people are. She just runs harder, wants it
- 37:08more, and it's just tougher than everybody else.
- 37:12Like this is not throwing shade at Courtney Dewalter.
- 37:14I think she is the GOAT. But I think a lot of people are
- 37:17like, oh, wow, she is not like insanely fit.
- 37:20Like it seems like when she races and destroys everybody,
- 37:24destroys most of the guys, like 99% of the guys and all the
- 37:27women. I think that just goes to show
- 37:31you like, and I've talked about this before, when you look at
- 37:34people in the trail running scene, a Walmsley, a David
- 37:39Sinclair, obviously Killian, like some of these freaks and
- 37:43you're like, I can never run that fast.
- 37:46I'll just pack it in like I don't know.
- 37:50It is not. You can succeed in these hard
- 37:53long ultra trail efforts without being the the most genetic freak
- 37:59athlete ever. I think people way underestimate
- 38:02like just having grit training, doing everything you can to
- 38:06maximize your potential. I think pretty much no one
- 38:10maximize their potential. There's probably a handful of
- 38:11people that have come close of really getting 100% out of
- 38:17yourself at a race, but like Courtney Dwalter, Another one is
- 38:20Zach Miller. He's like your favorite ultra
- 38:23runner's favorite ultra runner. That's what I said before.
- 38:25He runs so hard. And I think Wamsi was saying in
- 38:30an interview, somebody told me this, Wamsi was saying in an
- 38:32interview, like he, Jack Miller never broke, I think 16 minutes
- 38:37in the 5K or 15 minutes in the 5K, one of those two.
- 38:41So Walmsley probably runs like a minute plus faster than him.
- 38:45And he almost beat Walmsley at UT MB 100 because he just has a
- 38:49deeper well. And I think it's just
- 38:51inspirational to see like, and to see people go way hard.
- 38:57Like don't, yeah, must be nice to be like, you know, that that
- 39:02fit just naturally or whatever. Like if you get down that
- 39:05tunnel, that's just a a bad way to go.
- 39:07And I've been there before. Like don't compare yourself.
- 39:10If you maximize your potential you are going to be way faster
- 39:15than you think you are. Everyone overestimates what they
- 39:19can do in a year and underestimates what they can do
- 39:21in five years. I think like that is just so
- 39:25true. If you really train for a long
- 39:26time you are going to get way fitter than you think you ever
- 39:29could. So dream way bigger than you
- 39:31think and work way harder than you think and try to increase
- 39:37yet the depth of your pain cave because there are people going
- 39:41away harder than you. And I don't know what, I don't
- 39:46know what people are saying about Courtney's marathon.
- 39:49I, I think she's going to do another one.
- 39:51I guarantee she's going to do it a lot faster.
- 39:53Like I'm sure some people have been like, oh, oh, that's kind
- 39:58of crazy. She she only ran AA249.
- 40:01I think she is super competitive and she's going to come back and
- 40:04run a much faster time. And like she's been trail
- 40:08running for so long. I've even know this noticed this
- 40:11myself. Like I do a ton of trail running
- 40:13up, always getting vert going up, going down.
- 40:16But like my running economy, if I'm not doing flat road running,
- 40:19it's a totally different thing. Like you can have fitness, but
- 40:23if you're not running like tons of Rd. miles, you just don't
- 40:27have the running economy, even though you can be powerful and
- 40:30aerobically fit, you just don't have the economy to do like a
- 40:33fast marathon. So I think if she runs another
- 40:36marathon again, I bet it'll be sub 240.
- 40:39I think her and if she trained for the last 10 years for just
- 40:43marathoning, I think she would be one of the best in the world.
- 40:46So, but I think that just goes to show like, don't you know,
- 40:51don't look at these crazy athletes and get discouraged.
- 40:53Maximize what you can do and and you're going to surprise
- 40:59yourself. So that's the the Courtney the
- 41:03Courtney stuff. And then I had compound interest
- 41:08under this. I think this is, I don't know if
- 41:11this is relates to the, to the Courtney thing, but I think like
- 41:14what I was saying, you overestimate what you can do in
- 41:18a year and underestimate what you can do in five years.
- 41:21I think it's the same like, and this can apply to anything, like
- 41:24I'm going to apply it to running and fitness, but this can apply
- 41:27to anything that you do. Everyone knows compound
- 41:30interest, like start saving money when you're young and way
- 41:34down the line, you're going to have a lot of money.
- 41:36It's going to make you money and all this stuff.
- 41:37Like everybody knows that. But I think it's, it's true in
- 41:42anything that you do, the longer you do it, you're just going to
- 41:47keep building on top of like your fitness and what you know
- 41:50about training and stuff like that.
- 41:52And it's just going to keep, you're going to keep getting
- 41:55fitter, fitter, fitter, fitter. I think Peter Attia, who's like
- 41:59a doctor or trainer or whatever, says the compounding effect of
- 42:03exercising is so great that the only thing that can get in the
- 42:07way, not diet, not sleeping anything, is lack of exercising.
- 42:11So if you are consistently training 6 or I always take a
- 42:15rest day, but like 6 or seven days a week for years, for 10
- 42:19years, you are going to make astronomical gains.
- 42:25Your body produces new cells like your your whole biology can
- 42:28change over the course of ten years.
- 42:30You can regenerate every cell in your body.
- 42:33And so yeah, I think like, yeah, don't put a limit on yourself
- 42:37and and just play the long game. Like This is why I stay healthy.
- 42:41Get faster. If you do that month over month,
- 42:44four years, you're going to surprise yourself.
- 42:47So that's the goal for me. I think that should be the goal
- 42:49for everybody. I think most of these quote UN
- 42:52quote genetic freaks, they've just been running for 10 plus
- 42:55years longer than you. If you haven't been running like
- 43:02I don't want to put like a number, but like let's say like
- 43:0511:50 to 50, like that kind of hour range of running per week
- 43:11for 8:00 to 10 years, you're probably nowhere close to your
- 43:15to your ceiling. So don't let anybody tell you
- 43:18like what your ceiling is in running just out work them get
- 43:22to it. All right.
- 43:25That's I think that's a pretty good.
- 43:28That's a pretty good. I will say one more thing about
- 43:31compounder's interest. The other thing I think people
- 43:35understand that it, you know, after a long time you get a ton
- 43:38of gains from something, but I think like it's like, all right,
- 43:41the first year you're not going to get a ton of gains.
- 43:43So like I'll just put it off for a year.
- 43:45But if you put it off for a year, you're actually just
- 43:48losing the last year of all of that compounding effects, which
- 43:54is the greatest year. So start now.
- 43:57And if you're like, oh, I should have started 5-10 years ago, the
- 44:01best time to start anything is 10 years ago, but the second
- 44:03best time is today. And the first few years of that
- 44:08compounding growth in anything, you can make up for it very
- 44:12easily. So work really hard for a little
- 44:15bit. You'll get yourself up to speed.
- 44:17And then just do it for a long time.
- 44:19OK, That's the end. That was kind of like a good
- 44:21motivational few minutes, but I'll stop talking about that
- 44:25stuff now. OK, Next up, Biggs Backyard
- 44:31Ultra. So like I said, this is I think
- 44:33the World Trail World Championship for Backyard Ultra.
- 44:38So if you don't know what a backyard ultra is, it is
- 44:41essentially you run 4.16 miles or 4.2 miles every hour on the
- 44:49hour until there is one person left.
- 44:52So you're basically running like a little under a 15 minute mile
- 44:57every hour until everybody else quits except for one person.
- 45:02And so you can't get ahead, you can't get behind.
- 45:06If you run the four, if you run the four miles at a 10 minute
- 45:08pace, you have 20 minutes before you can start for the next hour.
- 45:12So, you know, people have different strategies on if you
- 45:15should run fast, if you should pace it and just come in a
- 45:17minute before the deadline to go out for the next one.
- 45:20People have different strategies.
- 45:21There's lots of walking, hiking, and it really comes down to like
- 45:26how do you manage sleep? How do you manage your new
- 45:29nutrition? Like every hour you get all of
- 45:31your equipment so you can Lube up, you can eat, you can
- 45:35rehydrate, you don't have to carry a ton of stuff.
- 45:37You can take care of like a little ache or pain like massage
- 45:39or whatever. But the goal is just to keep
- 45:43going until till you can't. And so last year, I think the, I
- 45:47don't know if it was, I think it was last year at this world
- 45:50championship for backyard ultras.
- 45:52Like if you go for 24 hours one day, it's 100 miles.
- 45:56If you go for two days, 48 hours is 200 miles.
- 45:59Last year the winner ran 366 miles, which is almost four days
- 46:07straight of running at 4 miles every hour, which I talked about
- 46:13last minute standing. I don't have any interest in
- 46:15them right now. It is really just a who wants it
- 46:18more. How much grit do you have?
- 46:21Courtney's done these and she like she's done super well, but
- 46:25it is just so insane that the human body can go for four
- 46:30straight days of running without stopping like it is.
- 46:35It's hard to conceive a a four day work week or like if you had
- 46:39to work four straight days, poof, this week is this week is
- 46:42dragging by some somebody. They're not sleeping.
- 46:45Will they sleep for a couple minutes if they're strategizing?
- 46:48But like they don't get 8 hours of sleep, they don't get a warm
- 46:51whatever. They're just running for those
- 46:53full four days. So it's insane to watch.
- 46:58I think last year, like it got a lot of coverage, like the live
- 47:01stream, I don't know who live streams it, but that'll be fun
- 47:04to like watch along and we'll see if they break the four day
- 47:08mark. And one of the other things that
- 47:10I was thinking, I think Ed Clifford who won Bubba's like
- 47:14the first three years, I think he did Big's Backyard.
- 47:17I don't think he had as good as a showing as he wanted to.
- 47:19But Lucas, I think his last name starts with the J.
- 47:23We'll just leave it at that. Lucas J who won Bubba's this
- 47:27year, who went almost 2 days. I was thinking we need to get
- 47:33this guy into Big's backyard. I think it's hard to get get
- 47:36into it, but I think there are probably some backyard races
- 47:40that if you win, you get into it.
- 47:42I think we need Lucas J to get in there because like I said
- 47:46last week, if Lucas J and Ed Clifford were in a backyard
- 47:50ultra battle, I think we may successfully glitch the Matrix
- 47:55or glitch the simulation because he did for the last skier
- 48:01standing earlier this year too. So he won that as well.
- 48:04So he won those two in the same year.
- 48:06He went 72 hours. So he went three straight days
- 48:09hiking up and skiing down every hour on the hour.
- 48:12So this dude has got grip. He's got a deep well and he, if
- 48:16you can go for three days on skis, I would love to see him in
- 48:19Big's backyard Ultra. So maybe one day, maybe the one
- 48:24day that'll happen, but we'll see.
- 48:29OK, that was most of oh, van. We got van life on here.
- 48:33So I, I got my, I got my truck back.
- 48:35The van is gone. But I will say I like to drive
- 48:39in that van around. I, I feel like van life has
- 48:43gotten very popular in the White Mountains, like trail runners,
- 48:47like it's so easy to just like if you're doing like long
- 48:50efforts or if you're crewing people or if you're in the
- 48:52middle of the woods in the middle of the night anyway, it's
- 48:54so convenient to just have a van like with all your stuff that
- 49:00you can sleep in. And so I always thought it was
- 49:03cool when I kind of looked into it.
- 49:04I'm like, yeah, you know, I like sleeping in my own bed kind of
- 49:07thing. I'm on a huge camper, but I was
- 49:10driving that van around and just pulling up to a trailhead, put
- 49:13it in park and then like not getting out of the the truck,
- 49:16just walking back and having all of my stuff there.
- 49:19It was so nice. I tented out last week and I
- 49:22didn't sleep in the van, but I tented out and I just threw all
- 49:25the camping stuff in there. And I was thinking like, and I
- 49:28was thinking this thing is kind of roomy.
- 49:30I kind of, I could put a bed in here, put it this way, fold it
- 49:34up, put a chair, put some stuff. And it really had me thinking.
- 49:38I think for me, ultimately I think I just need a house.
- 49:42Like I live in an apartment, but I do need that to come back to.
- 49:46But one day if I could afford a van and also have that for like
- 49:50all these crazy trail stuff, I might do it.
- 49:53I might do it. So sad the van is gone.
- 49:57I enjoyed it for a week but van life is kind of cool.
- 50:02That's my conclusion there. One other note, biking.
- 50:06So this was a couple weeks ago but I was biking with one of my
- 50:09buddies and biking is. I really like biking but I think
- 50:15once I started looking at watts and speed and road because I
- 50:18have a road bike it got less fun because biking like I don't
- 50:22know. I don't know if I just have weak
- 50:23legs or what but biking is hard. Like I've always noticed I can't
- 50:27get my heart rate super high up on a bike ride.
- 50:31And it just feels like like if I bike for a couple hours,
- 50:35especially climbing on a bike, after a couple hours, it just
- 50:38feels like impossible. I'm like my legs are so weak, I
- 50:40can't get my heart rate up high. I just think of biking so and
- 50:44it's always like, you got all this things like my bike just
- 50:46makes a new noise every time I bring it out, which is not like
- 50:49super fun because I don't know what any of the noises mean and
- 50:52I don't like bringing it in. So I just kind of ride and hope
- 50:56it goes away. But it's just like another thing
- 50:58you get the bike shoes to help. Like I, I like just grabbing a
- 51:01pair of shoes, my vest and going.
- 51:03But biking is fun. Like when you're, but when you
- 51:05have a good day biking, you feel on top of the world.
- 51:07One of my favorite things to do on a bike is when you're passing
- 51:10by runners, especially runners that don't look like they're
- 51:12having super fun because some people, you know, just grind
- 51:15roads or whatever. I'm, I'm always having a blast
- 51:18on bike. Like if I'm going downhill, I'm
- 51:20having a blast. So it's, it's super nice.
- 51:22But when I was biking with a buddy and I look at before I get
- 51:27into it, I was looking at, I look at Strava segments on a
- 51:30bike and I'm like, this is impossible.
- 51:31They they must be riding an E bike.
- 51:33How do they go up this so fast? How do they ride so fast?
- 51:37And some of the bikes are crazy. Like I don't have a super fast
- 51:40bike, but it is like a, it might be carbon fiber or a bike, I
- 51:44don't know. It's it's like 1500 bucks.
- 51:47But I'm like, how do they go so fast?
- 51:50I was biking with my buddy who's who does more biking with me in
- 51:53the Super strong legs, super strong biker, strong runner.
- 51:57Ryan Fournier, who yeah, yeah, talked about him in the washed
- 52:02Dodge. He paced me and then he he was
- 52:03on the top ten in the white, the boots spur throw down.
- 52:07We're biking together and he was kind of showing me like when
- 52:10you're biking in a peloton, like drafting, and I was drafting him
- 52:15for a little bit. There was like a couple sections
- 52:17that we kind of, I went ahead or he went ahead, I was drafting,
- 52:21then I went ahead, he was drafting.
- 52:22And when you're drafting behind somebody on a bike, so much more
- 52:26fun. It's so much easier.
- 52:28I didn't realize how much drafting affected things.
- 52:32And so I was like, oh, OK, wait. I'm understanding biking a
- 52:36little bit more here. Like you have good days.
- 52:38And then if you can bike with a group and draft, like if you
- 52:41bike with five people and you don't get 4/5 of the time you're
- 52:44drafting, you're just going faster.
- 52:47You look cooler. I can see how biking is cool.
- 52:50So I had my first drafting experience.
- 52:52I liked it. I think I'd be scared to go on
- 52:55like a group ride. Like I always like the bike
- 52:57shops will host group rides and I'm always like, oh, it'd be fun
- 53:00to go, but I don't think my brakes are very good and I'd be
- 53:02scared that I would crash into somebody and be like, sorry,
- 53:06sorry guys, but that was the biking thing.
- 53:10And then last but not least, the deer season update.
- 53:13So talked a little bit about this last week and I'm just
- 53:16going to start throwing these in for the next like a month or so
- 53:20because like I said, that is like my other big hobby in the
- 53:24fall I go. I like going deer hunting and
- 53:28I've been hunting really hard this year.
- 53:30Like the goal for me is always to fill the freezer and I have
- 53:35been doing a good job at that. Me and my dad, between us, like
- 53:38last year we got combined 9 deer so I got 5, he got 4 / 500 lbs
- 53:45of the best meat that you can buy.
- 53:48We had just an awesome year. It was very successful.
- 53:50And one thing too quick a note because people are always like
- 53:55how can you shoot 5 deer? Like, how was that legal?
- 53:57If you if you use a bow, you get extra tags.
- 54:01They give out extra antlerless tags to help manage the deer
- 54:04population. And then I hunt in Maine as
- 54:07well, which you get extra tags there.
- 54:08So I have plenty of tags. All legal, all all good there.
- 54:13But yeah, we just had a really good year last year.
- 54:16I ate. I, like I said, I last week I
- 54:19didn't eat, I didn't buy red meat from the grocery store for
- 54:2111 1/2 months. But yeah, the first couple weeks
- 54:26of the season were tough. Like I was seeing a lot of deer,
- 54:28but I just, it's really, really hard to get them with a bow.
- 54:31They have to be so close. And it's just deer hunting is
- 54:35just hard in general. And with a bow it's, it's that
- 54:37much harder. So I was kind of getting my butt
- 54:39kicked a little bit, but I was enjoying just getting out.
- 54:41Like it's nice to kind of like explore new woods.
- 54:45So I was doing a lot of that. Like I didn't go to the same
- 54:47spot. I haven't gone to the same spot.
- 54:50I think I went to one spot the same twice this year, but just
- 54:53exploring it wasn't getting out. Seen a lot of deer hadn't got
- 54:56one. I posted a video on my YouTube
- 54:58which I was like, this isn't really because they're always
- 55:00like you got to stay within your niche.
- 55:02But I'm just going to post whatever.
- 55:05I posted a little clip of a of a buck that I saw two weeks ago.
- 55:10And like I said, I'm just trying to fill my freezer.
- 55:13Once I get my deer, I just go back to running.
- 55:16Like I, I would rather be in the mountains and I don't know,
- 55:20after a season of deer hunting, I would rather be in the
- 55:22mountains and deer hunting like towards the end.
- 55:24But yeah, so and so I haven't really shot like any like, you
- 55:30know, big bucks. Some guys are really into like
- 55:32the trophy like shooting big bucks and I'm just really trying
- 55:34to get the meat. But you know, would, would still
- 55:38be cool to see. Like, I mean, the deer in
- 55:40general are just so cool. Like you're sitting there, it's
- 55:43getting dark in the woods. And then like these just forest
- 55:45ponies come out of nowhere and they're like, you guys live out
- 55:47here. But yeah, so I'm going into a
- 55:51new spot and I'm basically like setting up.
- 55:53I have it's called the saddle. So I'm setting up my saddle and
- 55:56I'm like climbing the trees. You have to just climb a tree
- 55:59and set your thing up. I'm like up in a tree, 15 feet
- 56:02trying to set my thing up. And I make a little noise and I
- 56:04look to the left and this, this big buck is just looking at me.
- 56:07I'm like, Oh my gosh, my bow is on the ground.
- 56:09I haven't pulled my bow up. So if you watch the video and
- 56:12see, but so that was like a cool experience.
- 56:14I haven't seen a ton of like big bucks like that in the woods.
- 56:17So it was just cool to see like a mature, a big mature deer like
- 56:21that. And he let me watch him for like
- 56:24a minute or two. So I, you know, I have the clip
- 56:26there. Whatever.
- 56:27It's not like a super good clip and but I put it on the YouTube
- 56:30and I was like, yeah. And then it so didn't didn't get
- 56:34him the next day. I got my first year of the year.
- 56:38It was a small one, but I filled one of my antler list tags and
- 56:42it was a good start to the year. And my dad has already got 1.
- 56:46So we're so we got 2 deers so far this year.
- 56:48So the freezer is getting restocked and yeah, I'm excited.
- 56:53The next month or so is really like gun season for deer hasn't
- 56:56opened yet. So it opens in a in a few weeks.
- 56:59That's when, like, you know, a lot more people are out, but
- 57:01then deer kind of moving around more and everything.
- 57:04So it's a good time of year. I I think October is my favorite
- 57:08month. Yeah.
- 57:09I like when it's getting crisp. I love running on the trails in
- 57:12October, getting out, deer hunting, just being outside.
- 57:17So it's been a good month. That's all I have for this
- 57:21episode. What do we got here?
- 57:24Almost at an hours. Sounds good to me.
- 57:29Yeah. I just want to say again, thank
- 57:30you for all the support. Anyone listening?
- 57:33It's been pretty cool. I don't know why I was so like,
- 57:37I don't know, I'm sure a lot of people have like thoughts like
- 57:40this guy's whatever, but yeah, I think it's really cool.
- 57:44Like I didn't really, I guess a lot of people have been super
- 57:48supportive and been like, oh, that's awesome for you.
- 57:50Like good, good for you. And I kind of been feeling like
- 57:53that, like it feels like it's, you know, I just want to, I've
- 57:56had so many experiences out here.
- 57:58I've learned so much. Like I said, I've had thousands
- 58:00and thousands of hours of like running ultra running trail
- 58:05running mountain stuff. And so I feel like I have a lot
- 58:08of value to offer. Like things that I know I've
- 58:10heard cool stories, I've done cool things.
- 58:12So I have a lot of like stories and stuff that I'll that I'll
- 58:14tell in these podcasts. If anybody has any questions
- 58:18they related to running mountains, anything like that,
- 58:22I'll like answer them in these podcasts.
- 58:25But yeah, I think the goal is to just like extract the value out
- 58:28of me and share it with you guys, crack some jokes in
- 58:32between. So that's the whole idea for Run
- 58:35Mountain Peaks. Try to just get people out more.
- 58:40Try to share what I know. Bring the camera along.
- 58:44I haven't bring the camera along on as many like mountain runs.
- 58:47Today was a beautiful day, I'll say that.
- 58:50But share some of that stuff too.
- 58:53And yeah, that is kind of the goal, the goal for the podcast
- 58:56and the YouTube channel. So appreciate all the support.
- 59:00We're going to keep it going. Hopefully enjoyed some people.
- 59:03Maybe there's a few new listeners that that can take
- 59:06stuff away from this. But yeah, that's all I got for
- 59:08this week. We'll see you next week.
- 59:11Peace.
