- 0:00Acts chapter 17 Now when they had travelled through Amphipolis
- 0:04and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a
- 0:08synagogue of the Jews, and according to Paul's custom, he
- 0:11went to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from
- 0:14the Scriptures, explaining and giving evidence that the Christ
- 0:17had to suffer and rise again from the dead, saying, This
- 0:20Jesus, whom I am proclaiming to you, is the Christ.
- 0:23And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, along
- 0:26with a large number of the God fearing Greeks and a number of
- 0:29the leading women. But the Jews, becoming jealous
- 0:31and taking along some wicked men from the marketplace, formed a
- 0:34mob and set the city in an uproar.
- 0:37And attacking the House of Jason, they began seeking to
- 0:39bring them out to the people. When they did not find them,
- 0:42they began dragging Jason and some brethren before the city
- 0:45authorities, shouting. These men who have upset the
- 0:47world have come here also, and Jason has welcomed them, and
- 0:51they all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that
- 0:55there is another king Jesus. They stirred up the crowd and
- 0:58the city authorities who heard these things.
- 1:00When they had received a pledge from Jason and the others, they
- 1:03released them. The brethren immediately sent
- 1:05Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived
- 1:08they went into the synagogue of the Jews.
- 1:10Now these were more noble minded than those in Thessalonica, but
- 1:13they received the word with great eagerness, examining the
- 1:16Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.
- 1:19Therefore many of them believed, along with a number of prominent
- 1:22Greek women and men. When the Jews of Thessalonica
- 1:25found out that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul and
- 1:27Berea also, they came there as well, agitating and stirring up
- 1:31the crowds. Then immediately the brethren
- 1:34sent Paul out to go as far as the sea, and Silas and Timothy
- 1:38remained there. Now those who escorted Paul
- 1:40brought him as far as Athens, and receiving a command from for
- 1:43Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible, they left.
- 1:47Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was
- 1:49being provoked within him as he was observing the city full of
- 1:52idols. So he was reasoning in the
- 1:54synagogue with the Jews and the God fearing Gentiles and in the
- 1:57marketplace every day with those who happened to be present.
- 2:01And also some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were
- 2:03conversing with him. Some were saying, what would
- 2:06this idle babbler wish to say? Others, he seems to be a
- 2:10proclaimer of strange deities, because he was preaching Jesus
- 2:13in the resurrection. And they took him and brought
- 2:15him to the Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new
- 2:19teaching is which you are proclaiming?
- 2:21For you are bringing some strange things to our ears.
- 2:23So we want to know what these things mean.
- 2:26Now all the Athenians and the strangers visiting there used to
- 2:29spend their time in nothing other than telling or hearing
- 2:31something new. So Paul stood in the midst of
- 2:34the Areopagus and said, Men of Athens, I observe that you are
- 2:38very religious in all respects. For while I was passing through
- 2:42and examining the objects of your worship, I also found an
- 2:45altar with this inscription to an unknown God.
- 2:48Therefore what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to
- 2:52you. The God who made the world and
- 2:54all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does
- 2:57not dwell in temples made with hands, nor is He served by human
- 3:01hands, as though He needed anything.
- 3:03Since He Himself gives to all people life and breath, and all
- 3:06things, And He made from one man every nation of mankind to live
- 3:10on all the face of the earth, having determined their
- 3:12appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation,
- 3:16that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him
- 3:19and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.
- 3:22For in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own
- 3:25poets have said. For we also are His children.
- 3:29Being then the children of God, we ought not to think that the
- 3:32divine nature is like gold or silver, or stone, an image
- 3:35formed by the art and thought of man.
- 3:38Therefore, having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now
- 3:40declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent,
- 3:44because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in
- 3:46righteousness through a man whom He has appointed, having
- 3:49furnished proof to all men by raising him from the dead.
- 3:52Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some
- 3:54began to sneer, but others said, We shall hear you again
- 3:57concerning this. So Paul went out of their midst,
- 4:00but some men joined him and believed, among whom also were
- 4:04Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris, and others
- 4:08with them.
