- 1:36Speaker 1: and restoring the dignity of those on the margins. In

- 1:42Speaker 1: How I lost my religion but found my faith. He
- 1:45Speaker 1: shares how he found the courage to stop ignoring his
- 1:48Speaker 1: trauma and instead to begin working through it step by step.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Please welcome the money making conversations my man Lokraiz and
- 1:59Speaker 1: say about you. Look at far I brought your online up. Yeah,
- 2:05Speaker 1: you know the beauty of you, Like I tell you,
- 2:08Speaker 1: the first time I got to see you perform whats
- 2:10Speaker 1: uh in Houston that was doing the Super Bowl weekend
- 2:13Speaker 1: and and even even though I didn't know you, I
- 2:16Speaker 1: knew there was a gifted person speaking there singing at
- 2:20Speaker 1: that time. But at the time also you will dealing
- 2:22Speaker 1: with a lot of trauma in your life, and but
- 2:26Speaker 1: you're able to mask that and not allow it to
- 2:28Speaker 1: affect your abilities as an author, performing artists. Talk to
- 2:33Speaker 1: those different steps. And then we're gonna go through the
- 2:35Speaker 1: book that uh wonderful book, I won't wonderfully honest book
- 2:38Speaker 1: and I think a necessary read that I'm recommend to
- 2:41Speaker 1: all my all, my putting it in my mailing list
- 2:44Speaker 1: that goes out to fans on Wednesday, which is tomorrow,
- 2:48Speaker 1: ninety thousand people. You know, I got over a million
- 2:51Speaker 1: social media follows, so you'll see me posting it there.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Because when you when people release information to the general
- 2:57Speaker 1: population because you are celebrity. We talk about it in
- 3:00Speaker 1: your book being a celebrity, and sometimes being a celebrity
- 3:03Speaker 1: allows you to be a victim of your success because
- 3:06Speaker 1: people can to dissect a celebrity or an important person
- 3:10Speaker 1: versus an everyday person kind of like skates through And
- 3:14Speaker 1: you know, your book tells that story, but talk about
- 3:16Speaker 1: you know, performing even though you're dealing with a lot
- 3:19Speaker 1: of emotional drama. Yeah. You know, sometimes I think you
- 3:25Speaker 1: you wear that face that you just put on, those
- 3:29Speaker 1: lenses that allow you to just keep going and pushing
- 3:32Speaker 1: through without dealing with the problems and the trauma. And
- 3:35Speaker 1: you allow uh successes to define you instead of, um,
- 3:40Speaker 1: you know, you being successful out of a healthy and
- 3:43Speaker 1: whole version of yourself. You're allowing the successes to convince
- 3:49Speaker 1: you that you are healthy and whole. And I think
- 3:51Speaker 1: that's that's a very different thing. And so for me,
- 3:55Speaker 1: it was it was a matter of becoming a healthy,
- 3:58Speaker 1: whole individual and dealing with some historical traumas and um
- 4:02Speaker 1: and recognizing that, uh, you know, I was a slave
- 4:05Speaker 1: to uh what other people wanted of me and not
- 4:09Speaker 1: being who I was created to be and uh and
- 4:11Speaker 1: that that that meant all? Did you say that? Now?
- 4:14Speaker 1: With your book titled you Know I Am Restored How
- 4:17Speaker 1: I Lost my religion but found my faith, I gotta
- 4:19Speaker 1: ask you what is the difference between religion and faith?
- 4:25Speaker 1: That's a great question. Um, you know, I think, uh
- 4:28Speaker 1: a lot of us are tied to religion and religion
- 4:31Speaker 1: is essentially performing to be accepted. Religion is performing trying
- 4:37Speaker 1: to do all the right things so that God will
- 4:39Speaker 1: accept you or maybe that other people will accept you.
- 4:42Speaker 1: And and faith or relationship is more about saying, I
- 4:47Speaker 1: know I've been accepted, so let me function out of
- 4:50Speaker 1: that acceptance. Let me do the right things because I've
- 4:53Speaker 1: been accepted. And so I always say it like this.
- 4:56Speaker 1: If I come home to my wife and I knock
- 4:58Speaker 1: on the door and I handed some flowers and say, EGO,
- 5:00Speaker 1: I'm supposed to do this, that's religion, and I'm probably
- 5:03Speaker 1: gonna squeak on the couch that uh but but but
- 5:08Speaker 1: but faith or relationship is me coming home and say, man,
- 5:12Speaker 1: I've been thinking about you all day and you just
- 5:14Speaker 1: you're so wonderful and I appreciate you so much. I
- 5:17Speaker 1: just brought you these flowers because you're amazing. And I
- 5:20Speaker 1: don't I have faith. You know, I don't know what's
- 5:23Speaker 1: gonna happen, but probably something is gonna happen because of
- 5:26Speaker 1: that reality. And that's that's really interesting you to say that,
- 5:28Speaker 1: because people, you know, people will question your faith before
- 5:33Speaker 1: they question your religion. They were, and you know, it's
- 5:36Speaker 1: really interesting that that happens like that. And that's why
- 5:38Speaker 1: I asked that question between religion and faith, because people
- 5:41Speaker 1: will they will challenge your faith. They'll challenge you because
- 5:44Speaker 1: your faith can be tied to so many things. You know,
- 5:47Speaker 1: where you live, how you walk, how you talk, or
- 5:49Speaker 1: how much money you make, how much what your expectations
- 5:52Speaker 1: for yourself, for your family, that can be that word
- 5:55Speaker 1: faith has such an expansive term to it, but it's
- 5:58Speaker 1: also tied to religion and it allows you to its
- 6:01Speaker 1: over when I'm reading a book which is, like I said,
- 6:03Speaker 1: a third read about From your Childhood to Adulthood, and Uh,
- 6:08Speaker 1: it really amazed me because if the talk of being
- 6:11Speaker 1: a healthy person, which is really key in the day,
- 6:15Speaker 1: and I think that plays in every chapter in the
- 6:17Speaker 1: book as you talk about being a man and being
- 6:19Speaker 1: a young man and being a young boy, meeting your
- 6:22Speaker 1: father and and he picking you up and you're thinking
- 6:24Speaker 1: that's a great moment of life and then gets what
- 6:27Speaker 1: he basically kicked you to the curve, which was one
- 6:29Speaker 1: of those unhealthy moments in your life when you're trying
- 6:32Speaker 1: to live a life as a healthy person. Correct, Yeah, absolutely,
- 6:38Speaker 1: And I mean that's that's that's A huge part of
- 6:40Speaker 1: it is is, uh, you know, not having those those models.
- 6:45Speaker 1: You know, you can only be what you've seen, you
- 6:47Speaker 1: can only become what you've bailed and so not having
- 6:50Speaker 1: those models becomes a traumatic thing for for a lot
- 6:53Speaker 1: of us. And and uh, and so I'm just that's
- 6:57Speaker 1: really interesting when I talk to you. The first time
- 6:59Speaker 1: I talked to you, like could say, it was like
- 7:01Speaker 1: I knew you, but we were developing a relationship. Now
- 7:04Speaker 1: the second time around, I'm much more comfortable on how
- 7:07Speaker 1: HARD speak to you. And it's really based on reading
- 7:10Speaker 1: this book. And because we all have dark sides. You know,
- 7:14Speaker 1: when I say dark sides, secrets we don't reveal. We
- 7:17Speaker 1: lived through life with it, but we won't tell even
- 7:19Speaker 1: our closest loved ones. You know, I have them, and
- 7:22Speaker 1: you're sharing a lot of them in this book. And
- 7:26Speaker 1: you know, and and I have been fortunate to to
- 7:29Speaker 1: have been a popular stand up comedian and you and
- 7:33Speaker 1: in your book you're talking about you know, when you're
- 7:35Speaker 1: when you're in a church, you knows you kind of
- 7:38Speaker 1: know who your audience is. And I remember when I
- 7:41Speaker 1: was in the comedy club, I kind of know who
- 7:42Speaker 1: my audience is. But when I got booked in a
- 7:44Speaker 1: nightclub or booked in a private party, I really didn't
- 7:48Speaker 1: know who I was performing too, and it always put
- 7:51Speaker 1: additional stress in my mind on how to relate to
- 7:55Speaker 1: these people are if they will relate to me? And
- 7:58Speaker 1: you know when you talk about your spirits opening up
- 8:01Speaker 1: for Kevin Hard at the you know, at these at
- 8:03Speaker 1: the Mercedes being super Dome and you're looking at the audience,
- 8:06Speaker 1: who you know, we're here for Kevin Harll okay, and
- 8:10Speaker 1: but you're going out there not knowing How does that?
- 8:13Speaker 1: How does that work in your mind when you when
- 8:15Speaker 1: you're in that environment, you know you know they're here
- 8:18Speaker 1: for the because he's filled up, He filled up the dome. Okay,
- 8:22Speaker 1: You're blessed to be an opening act for him, and
- 8:25Speaker 1: because it allows you to grow your brand? How does
- 8:28Speaker 1: that trigger in your mind from a performing standpoint, who
- 8:31Speaker 1: you are you trying to relate to everybody? You're trying
- 8:33Speaker 1: to just get them to understand the CRAE experience. Yeah,
- 8:39Speaker 1: you know what it is is a lot of it
- 8:41Speaker 1: is like you said, understanding how to read the room
- 8:44Speaker 1: is understanding what people are there for and um and
- 8:48Speaker 1: and finding some common ground and and being able to
- 8:51Speaker 1: connect to people in a real way. And I think
- 8:54Speaker 1: authenticity is is where you can always win. You know,
- 8:58Speaker 1: people craveing longer for authenticity. But it's a hard thing
- 9:01Speaker 1: for us to do because we're so worried about what
- 9:05Speaker 1: everybody thinks. But how how authentic and connecting what it
- 9:10Speaker 1: has been for me to just come out and say,
- 9:11Speaker 1: I know, y'all at for me. I know you'll want
- 9:13Speaker 1: to see gem hard. You know, that's that's immediately gonna
- 9:16Speaker 1: endear people to me, immediately, gonna make them say, okay,
- 9:20Speaker 1: keeping it real and now all I hear what this
- 9:22Speaker 1: guy has to say. And so I think that's that's it.
- 9:25Speaker 1: It's a big piece of life, you know, because of
- 9:27Speaker 1: the fact that you know, eleven years old, you walk
- 9:30Speaker 1: on stage and you bust out with a wrap and
- 9:32Speaker 1: everybody now not gives you value. And and in my
- 9:37Speaker 1: book and your book, you know, and I'm end of
- 9:40Speaker 1: your look craze here this book I am restored, How
- 9:43Speaker 1: to How I Lost my religion but found my faith.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Each chapter is about value and that's the part of healthiness.
- 9:50Speaker 1: But in order to achieve value, if I'm reading this wrong,
- 9:53Speaker 1: you have to admit and go public with what's bothering
- 9:57Speaker 1: you inside? With that draw that alma, you know, that
- 10:00Speaker 1: chaos as you talk about, and when did you really
- 10:05Speaker 1: start realizing that because black the Black community is really
- 10:10Speaker 1: interesting community. Were we are in denial community, were in
- 10:14Speaker 1: denial about COVID and aint, when the denial about our
- 10:18Speaker 1: eating habits, when denial about gay gay community, we're denied.
- 10:23Speaker 1: We we're just an in denial community. And it holds
- 10:26Speaker 1: us back a lot. And so and it also it's
- 10:29Speaker 1: in deniable when it comes to mental and social stress,
- 10:32Speaker 1: you know, not admitting that we we have issues that
- 10:36Speaker 1: should be somebody should be talking to us about, and
- 10:39Speaker 1: that that that false ability to move forward, not emitting
- 10:43Speaker 1: that we are a flawed community, and uh holds us back.
- 10:48Speaker 1: And so that in it turn, in turn, will did
- 10:52Speaker 1: some some setbacks for you because you couldn't figure out
- 10:55Speaker 1: what was wrong with you. You're you're you're you're hitting
- 11:01Speaker 1: the hammer on a nail. Uh. A big piece of
- 11:05Speaker 1: our struggle, um is what what what what someone called
- 11:08Speaker 1: post traumatic slave syndrome right and and and post traumatic
- 11:12Speaker 1: slave syndrome is we have adopted and adapted these views
- 11:17Speaker 1: that were instilled in our ancestors that we are. We're
- 11:21Speaker 1: almost like um uh cattle, and we can just be
- 11:25Speaker 1: driven and and pushed and pushed and pushed until no end.
- 11:30Speaker 1: And the problem is we're not addressing our traumas, we're
- 11:33Speaker 1: not addressing our pains, we're not addressing our fears. We're
- 11:36Speaker 1: treating ourselves like animals. You know, I say sometimes, you know,
- 11:42Speaker 1: you can be a speedboat or you can be a
- 11:45Speaker 1: raft or a sailboat. And a speedboat is the thing
- 11:47Speaker 1: that can plow through you know, and just I'm just
- 11:50Speaker 1: gonna make it all the way, especially going around the gas,
- 11:53Speaker 1: and then you're gonna be out in the middle of
- 11:54Speaker 1: the ocean just floating. And and nobody wants to be
- 11:57Speaker 1: a raft where you don't have any sense of direction.
- 12:00Speaker 1: And so the reality is we have to become sailboat.
- 12:03Speaker 1: And the sailboat takes us acknowledging the way the wind
- 12:06Speaker 1: is blowing so you can adjust your sales. It takes
- 12:08Speaker 1: a little bit of work, it takes some thought, it
- 12:10Speaker 1: takes some time, and not just plowing through stuff. And
- 12:13Speaker 1: I think that's a part of our problem. Um. We
- 12:16Speaker 1: want to catch up, you know, in society, we've been
- 12:19Speaker 1: held back so long and we're trying to catch up,
- 12:21Speaker 1: so we won't acknowledge our emotions or the problems, and
- 12:25Speaker 1: the pain is just too much to acknowledge, so we're
- 12:27Speaker 1: live in denial instead of becoming healthy and whole um,
- 12:31Speaker 1: which is you know, if you want to be successful
- 12:33Speaker 1: in life, it's gonna first start with with being healthy
- 12:36Speaker 1: and whole. Everything else is in addition to that if
- 12:39Speaker 1: you want to you know, every million dollars you make
- 12:42Speaker 1: is has way more value if you're healthy and the
- 12:45Speaker 1: whole person. But if you are an emotional and mental
- 12:48Speaker 1: and spiritual disaster, a million dollars is not going to
- 12:51Speaker 1: make you any better. You're listening to money making conversations
- 12:54Speaker 1: with Rashan McDonald. We'll be right back. Cars today are

- 13:56Speaker 1: to money making Conversations UM your host Sean McDonald. I
- 14:00Speaker 1: always help people. My my goals in life are tied
- 14:03Speaker 1: to my experience, because not my not my money. Because
- 14:06Speaker 1: if I never go in the deal, I mean to
- 14:08Speaker 1: be honest with the crew, I'm never going to deal
- 14:10Speaker 1: trying to figure out how much money I'm gonna make.
- 14:12Speaker 1: It's about the relationships. He's about to what do I
- 14:15Speaker 1: get out of it for my brand, for my career.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Because I always know that I'm gonna make money. That's
- 14:19Speaker 1: just that's just an idea. My wife would go, I
- 14:22Speaker 1: don't know why you ever worry about money, because you're
- 14:23Speaker 1: gonna make it. You're gonna figure out how to make it.
- 14:25Speaker 1: And That's just been a skill set I've had since
- 14:27Speaker 1: I was seventeen, eighteen years old, and I've carried it
- 14:30Speaker 1: through because I'm just a guy who sits around just
- 14:32Speaker 1: thinking about how to make money, and and and and
- 14:36Speaker 1: when I when I look at your your brand, you know,
- 14:39Speaker 1: you know your entrepreneur, you're an activist, you know you.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Of course we know your talent from you working on
- 14:45Speaker 1: this documentary with your new your ninth album. All these
- 14:48Speaker 1: different layers started where though, you know, because like you said,
- 14:53Speaker 1: you know, you know you all, you know because your
- 14:55Speaker 1: father was in your life, your your mom. You put
- 14:58Speaker 1: you in a situation with what with a man who
- 15:01Speaker 1: who physically abused you from a standpoint, struck you, and
- 15:04Speaker 1: which which intimidated you and didn't put that with that
- 15:07Speaker 1: decision make you know whether he could come back into
- 15:09Speaker 1: the house on you, okay? And what was you supposed
- 15:13Speaker 1: to say no? You know? And so so where where
- 15:17Speaker 1: along the way did you start shaping the desire to
- 15:22Speaker 1: be this be la craze m M. You know what
- 15:28Speaker 1: I think, um, the journey of all that pain and trauma,
- 15:35Speaker 1: UM that the place where I found the most health
- 15:39Speaker 1: was being was expressing myself, you know, expressing myself through
- 15:42Speaker 1: initially poetry and then it turned into music and and
- 15:46Speaker 1: that that's a even if you go to therapy now,
- 15:48Speaker 1: they'll tell you that's one of the biggest things you
- 15:50Speaker 1: need to do. You need to start writing things down
- 15:52Speaker 1: because something happens with your mind, if your brain chemistry.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Once you start writing out the things that that that
- 15:58Speaker 1: your experience and it's journal and or a diary, it
- 16:01Speaker 1: is very helpful for you. And so that that's where
- 16:03Speaker 1: I learned the healthy technique. The problem for me was
- 16:08Speaker 1: some of the darkest corners of my world. You know,
- 16:11Speaker 1: I was not ready to deal with. I was not
- 16:13Speaker 1: ready to to wrestle with in the process, and so
- 16:17Speaker 1: it took a mental collapse for me. It took me,
- 16:21Speaker 1: took my mind and my body having to shut down.
- 16:23Speaker 1: You know they some people call a CEO syndrome where
- 16:26Speaker 1: the stresses of life just overwhelm you all at one
- 16:30Speaker 1: one time, and the body keeps the score. So your
- 16:32Speaker 1: mind may say, well, what happened to me attend was
- 16:35Speaker 1: was you know, a million years ago, but your body
- 16:37Speaker 1: is saying it might as well have been yesterday. So
- 16:39Speaker 1: you're just piling up stuff, all the trauma from your childhood,
- 16:43Speaker 1: and now you're in your adulthood and maybe you have
- 16:45Speaker 1: kids and that's adding more stuff. And now you're working
- 16:47Speaker 1: on deals and you're working on career. All this stuff
- 16:50Speaker 1: is piling, piling up, and if you're not addressing it,
- 16:53Speaker 1: eventually it's gonna catch up to you. And so you
- 16:55Speaker 1: you have to be able to decompress and address uh,
- 16:58Speaker 1: those those particular issues in order to to find It's
- 17:00Speaker 1: really important that people understand that you have to find yourself.
- 17:04Speaker 1: And despite all my success La Craze, I didn't really
- 17:07Speaker 1: find myself till I was in my forties. You know,
- 17:11Speaker 1: people will tell me I was showing you successful, But
- 17:14Speaker 1: I was successful because I accomplished things here. But when
- 17:17Speaker 1: I say that I was successful because I accomplished things,
- 17:20Speaker 1: that doesn't necessarily meant that I was accomplishing things that
- 17:23Speaker 1: made me happy. And that's why I always speak to
- 17:27Speaker 1: people is that you know a lot of people there
- 17:30Speaker 1: they'll stopped there in their career because guess what, they're
- 17:32Speaker 1: not happy making money that way, and so guess what,
- 17:36Speaker 1: it'll eventually catch up with you. That's why companies file bankruptcy.
- 17:40Speaker 1: That's why companies closed because the vision of the vision,
- 17:44Speaker 1: they're a person, visionary person who was tied to it
- 17:47Speaker 1: just stopped thinking because that didn't make them happy. And
- 17:50Speaker 1: so this book, when I talk, when I listened to you,
- 17:53Speaker 1: it is a journey in finding your happiness, because if
- 17:57Speaker 1: you don't find that happiness, there's not a fifty year
- 18:02Speaker 1: old krez sixty year old Kreze that we have today.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Am I correct when I say that? Absolutely? Absolutely, yeah,
- 18:10Speaker 1: you won't you I won't. It's not gonna. It's not gonna.
- 18:13Speaker 1: You're never gonna ride there, and and and that's you
- 18:16Speaker 1: know case. And point is that I think a lot
- 18:18Speaker 1: of times you don't even know the things that will
- 18:23Speaker 1: ultimately bring you happiness or bring you joy because you
- 18:27Speaker 1: haven't done enough work to know who you are. And
- 18:30Speaker 1: so you're looking at what everyone else has, thinking that well,
- 18:33Speaker 1: if I get what they get, then i'll be happy,
- 18:35Speaker 1: then I'll be healthy, instead of understanding who you are,
- 18:39Speaker 1: and you're wiring and and and realize that no, this
- 18:42Speaker 1: is what's gonna bring you that. And I had to
- 18:43Speaker 1: go through that exact same process in me, thinking that
- 18:46Speaker 1: if I could just be as famous as this person
- 18:49Speaker 1: or as renowned as this person, And truthfully, that's not
- 18:53Speaker 1: the way that God created me. You know, I'm I'm
- 18:56Speaker 1: an entrepreneur by nature. You know, I like performing and
- 19:00Speaker 1: I like art. But end of the day, I found
- 19:04Speaker 1: a lot more purpose when I'm building things and I'm
- 19:06Speaker 1: architecting things, and I'm giving other people opportunities. And so
- 19:10Speaker 1: when I'm using all my energy on creating opportunities for myself,
- 19:14Speaker 1: I'm not as I'm not as happy. But when I'm
- 19:16Speaker 1: creating opportunities for other people, you know, then I find
- 19:20Speaker 1: more I find a more fulfilling. I want to do
- 19:22Speaker 1: good in society, but I also want to do well financially.
- 19:26Speaker 1: So you can do you do it well. You can't
- 19:29Speaker 1: do good but doing, but you have to be happy
- 19:32Speaker 1: doing it though for long term. And that's what I'm
- 19:35Speaker 1: talking about in his interview. I don't want everybody to
- 19:37Speaker 1: hear this is that you know, you go out there
- 19:39Speaker 1: and make a lot of money. I would tell people
- 19:42Speaker 1: life should not be tied to the lottery effect, you know,
- 19:44Speaker 1: just waiting on that money, waiting on that moment, you
- 19:46Speaker 1: build a career in your and you and you people
- 19:49Speaker 1: around you that can support you. I know I've survived
- 19:53Speaker 1: this career because I've had a couple of key people
- 19:55Speaker 1: in my life that whenever I doubted myself the craze,
- 19:58Speaker 1: they told me be Rashwan, be with Shaw. They should
- 20:01Speaker 1: be You. Don't care what they're saying. Do be you now?
- 20:06Speaker 1: Be you has helped out a lot of people. Here
- 20:09Speaker 1: be you trust you? And because because success man and
- 20:15Speaker 1: in reading this book and reading about the chaos, reading
- 20:17Speaker 1: about the trauma. We talk about the molestation, the we
- 20:22Speaker 1: can talk about the physical abuse. Let's talk about the
- 20:25Speaker 1: life abusive as a successful people can go through if
- 20:29Speaker 1: you don't have the right people around you and you
- 20:32Speaker 1: don't admit that you need help, right, yes, Oh my goodness.
- 20:40Speaker 1: You know what It's funny if if you The problem
- 20:44Speaker 1: for a lot of us is that there is freedom
- 20:48Speaker 1: in confession, but there's always gonna be suffering and suppression
- 20:52Speaker 1: and and and denial will always lead to death. If
- 20:58Speaker 1: you're talking about a life threatening disease, right you, you
- 21:04Speaker 1: cannot deny that you have it, it's gonna be detrimental
- 21:08Speaker 1: for you, you know, And acknowledging is always painful, but
- 21:12Speaker 1: denial is always deadly. And that's what I want people
- 21:16Speaker 1: to understand. Acknowledging is gonna be painful, but denial is deadly.
- 21:19Speaker 1: When you can acknowledge that you have these issues in
- 21:22Speaker 1: your life, then it is hurtful. It is painful, it
- 21:26Speaker 1: is hard to to plow through, but to deny it,
- 21:29Speaker 1: it's deadly for you. And so you'll never be who
- 21:32Speaker 1: you were created to be. You'll never walk in the
- 21:35Speaker 1: fullness that you were created to walk in if you
- 21:39Speaker 1: keep denying you know the issues that are going on
- 21:42Speaker 1: in your world, and I think a lot of us
- 21:44Speaker 1: just don't realize that. Um, you know, my story is
- 21:48Speaker 1: is like you said, there's there's all the major traumas
- 21:51Speaker 1: that you can experience. You know, I've gone through them,
- 21:54Speaker 1: and so you know, I don't care what you've experienced
- 21:57Speaker 1: in life. I don't care if it's death, division, UH, discrimination, divorce, debt,
- 22:03Speaker 1: um all those things can be restored if you can
- 22:06Speaker 1: acknowledge the pain that they have brought you and then
- 22:10Speaker 1: move forward. You know, when reading your book, UH, interviewing
- 22:14Speaker 1: the Craze just in case people may have just tuned in,
- 22:17Speaker 1: you know, his book I'm were discussing I Am Restored,
- 22:20Speaker 1: how I lost my religion but found my faith, a
- 22:23Speaker 1: couple of courtions. I want to bring back up now
- 22:24Speaker 1: the book, the album. Want to flip to the album
- 22:26Speaker 1: right quick, because you're doing a documentary tied to the album. Okay?
- 22:32Speaker 1: Is that is that? Is that going to be a documentary?
- 22:34Speaker 1: We'll see you on like a Netflix or an Amazon.
- 22:37Speaker 1: It's just something that's available that you're putting out that
- 22:40Speaker 1: so we can go to your your website, you know,
- 22:42Speaker 1: I mean your YouTube challenge to see Yeah, so you
- 22:47Speaker 1: can check this out. It's the video series is uh
- 22:51Speaker 1: is on YouTube now and and there'll be a longer
- 22:54Speaker 1: form documentary that will come out down the line. But
- 22:57Speaker 1: but this this web series, you can see me addressing
- 23:01Speaker 1: the chaos in my world. You know, I meet my
- 23:03Speaker 1: father for the very first time on this on this
- 23:06Speaker 1: video series, and so people are able to see you
- 23:09Speaker 1: know that you're trying to run a successful business, you're
- 23:12Speaker 1: trying to raise a family, you're trying to be a leader,
- 23:15Speaker 1: and you have to deal with meeting your father for
- 23:18Speaker 1: the first time and many people would run from that
- 23:20Speaker 1: reality and say I got way too much for my
- 23:22Speaker 1: plate to be dealing with that. But I knew that
- 23:24Speaker 1: there was a piece of me that would not be
- 23:27Speaker 1: whole until I had that meeting. I didn't have any expectations.
- 23:30Speaker 1: I wasn't saying, now me and him are gonna be
- 23:32Speaker 1: best of friends and we're gonna make up for lost time.
- 23:35Speaker 1: But I knew that I had questions that I wanted
- 23:37Speaker 1: to ask, and maybe I wouldn't get the answers I wanted,
- 23:39Speaker 1: but I knew I didn't want to go to my
- 23:42Speaker 1: grave without asking some of those some of those questions.
- 23:45Speaker 1: And that's, uh, hey man, you know, I'm Roushan McDonald.
- 23:50Speaker 1: I've done a lot of great things in my life.
- 23:52Speaker 1: But if you put together a documentary, let's talk if
- 23:55Speaker 1: you if you don't have anybody else talking to you,
- 23:57Speaker 1: because because I I I draw talking to you, and
- 24:02Speaker 1: you have a voice that um that shapes this world,
- 24:05Speaker 1: not just the community, this world, and uh you articulate,
- 24:09Speaker 1: you're smart and look good and plus more important that
- 24:13Speaker 1: you have a story to tell that is tied to trauma,
- 24:16Speaker 1: It's tied to honesty, and it's tied to faith. Okay,
- 24:20Speaker 1: let's feel really okay. And uh and and and it's
- 24:23Speaker 1: important that you know I've learned when I when I
- 24:26Speaker 1: talk to people that have a unique point of points
- 24:29Speaker 1: of views, that I have to let them know what
- 24:31Speaker 1: I think. And it's something that you know. Your YouTube
- 24:34Speaker 1: channel is great. In fact, I'm I'm I'm gonna look
- 24:37Speaker 1: at the interview that you have when you first met
- 24:39Speaker 1: your day and I probably put in our newsletter to
- 24:41Speaker 1: let people see another side of you, honest side of you,
- 24:44Speaker 1: because in Hollywood, it's really interesting that you know, we're
- 24:47Speaker 1: we're put under and that's just the celebrities or athletes
- 24:51Speaker 1: were put on the microscope based on what you know,
- 24:54Speaker 1: but not the life that we live. When I say
- 24:56Speaker 1: that is that you know, it's we have made up
- 25:00Speaker 1: on when we hit camera, we we speak a certain way.
- 25:03Speaker 1: A lot of times when we hit the camera, we
- 25:05Speaker 1: perform a certain way. When we walk off that stage
- 25:07Speaker 1: and get out of that arena, then that's a different life.
- 25:09Speaker 1: And sometimes were held accountable to what they saw on
- 25:13Speaker 1: TV or what they saw in the movie or what
- 25:15Speaker 1: they saw on the performance. How do you deal with that?
- 25:17Speaker 1: Lokraiz mm hmm. Man, you know honestly, you've got to uh.
- 25:25Speaker 1: A lot of it is discernment. A lot of it
- 25:26Speaker 1: is is recognizing and realizing that some relationships you walk into, uh,
- 25:36Speaker 1: you know, relationally, and some people walk into transactionally, you know,
- 25:40Speaker 1: and you've got to be able to decide which is
- 25:42Speaker 1: which because a lot of the relationships in the entertainment
- 25:45Speaker 1: space are transactional that they may seem like their relational
- 25:49Speaker 1: people may come at you and say, hey, let's let's
- 25:51Speaker 1: hang out, let's be friends, but it's gonna take some
- 25:53Speaker 1: time for you to understand who your real friends are
- 25:56Speaker 1: and not to not to allow people who say, you know,
- 26:01Speaker 1: this is what they think about you, and and not
- 26:03Speaker 1: tell a lot of those voices to dictate who you
- 26:05Speaker 1: really are. So I look like being a professional athlete
- 26:07Speaker 1: is everyone's gonna say something from the sideline, But you
- 26:10Speaker 1: got to realize who your teammates are and who are
- 26:13Speaker 1: the people who want the best for you. Those are
- 26:15Speaker 1: the voices that you that you have to listen to.
- 26:18Speaker 1: And so that's that's one of the biggest things that
- 26:20Speaker 1: I had to learn early on, is that you know,
- 26:21Speaker 1: all those voices are not voices that I need to
- 26:24Speaker 1: listen and read the book. Look crazy, um, when you
- 26:28Speaker 1: brought up Calvinism. Okay, now you know, uh, A very
- 26:34Speaker 1: few people know Calvinism. You know. I am early in
- 26:38Speaker 1: my college career, I took a European history and I
- 26:42Speaker 1: learned about the Roman Catholicism and how and how Calvinism
- 26:46Speaker 1: was born out. They were just tired. It was tired,
- 26:50Speaker 1: and so so I just smiled when I got to
- 26:53Speaker 1: that part of your book. I go, wow, I've read
- 26:55Speaker 1: a lot of books in my life. This is probably
- 26:58Speaker 1: the first book I read since college that articulated Calvinism.
- 27:04Speaker 1: And it was important in your development. And so tell
- 27:07Speaker 1: everybody about that, because that's why I said, Man, you know,
- 27:11Speaker 1: when I read that, I said, I gotta have a
- 27:13Speaker 1: bigger part. Well, you're not gonna I'm based in Atlanta.
- 27:15Speaker 1: I just bought it. I just bought it for my
- 27:18Speaker 1: office in Atlanta. I'm headquartered here and uh, fourth quarters
- 27:22Speaker 1: gonna be amazing. And it was just so many things
- 27:25Speaker 1: in that book that needs to be You need to
- 27:28Speaker 1: be talking to other people with it based on it.
- 27:31Speaker 1: You understand that I'm saying this is a this is
- 27:34Speaker 1: a series to me, and that you should be hunsting
- 27:38Speaker 1: that you should be translating that's that's black, that's white,
- 27:43Speaker 1: that's that's feel with different different layers as minority community,
- 27:47Speaker 1: because like you, like you, I had success as a
- 27:50Speaker 1: stand up comedian in the white community before Death Comedy
- 27:53Speaker 1: Jam came out there. And then when I proceeded to
- 27:55Speaker 1: be koind of go over to death commity and looked
- 27:57Speaker 1: at me like I didn't belong. Hey, uh, you can't
- 28:00Speaker 1: make black people. Okay, don't do that. And I had
- 28:03Speaker 1: to prove myself the same thing with my business world.
- 28:07Speaker 1: I graduated with a math degree and I worked in
- 28:10Speaker 1: and went to work for ib AM. I to achieve
- 28:12Speaker 1: for one with deemed the ultimate passage into the white
- 28:15Speaker 1: corporate world. I was working for Big Blue. You know,
- 28:18Speaker 1: that's all you want, you know, So that wasn't enough
- 28:20Speaker 1: for me. I said, I wanted to be an entertainer.
- 28:22Speaker 1: I wanted to be a stand up comedian. And so
- 28:24Speaker 1: there's so many layers that talking to you and reading
- 28:27Speaker 1: this book allows me to understand that you have a
- 28:30Speaker 1: unique point of view that really this book is cool.
- 28:34Speaker 1: For man, it's some other stories we gotta tell, brother,
- 28:37Speaker 1: you and I gotta tell together. I like that, I
- 28:41Speaker 1: like that you. You you use somebody what we say,
- 28:45Speaker 1: has range, you know what I mean. A lot of
- 28:46Speaker 1: a lot of folks, you know, they can walk in
- 28:49Speaker 1: a lot of different worlds. That that shows that they
- 28:51Speaker 1: have some range. They've been exposed to a lot of
- 28:53Speaker 1: different places. So I find that interesting that that that
- 28:56Speaker 1: that you even know some of those those things, that
- 28:59Speaker 1: just shows your range. So I love it. I might
- 29:01Speaker 1: have to just try to pull up on your build
- 29:03Speaker 1: if I was just you know, man, you know the
- 29:06Speaker 1: fact that you wrote a fantastic book. But but I
- 29:09Speaker 1: don't want to remiss tell everybody about Calvinism before we
- 29:12Speaker 1: leave this show, because I tell you something I tell
- 29:14Speaker 1: that changed my life man in college. But i'd about
- 29:17Speaker 1: that man, Lutheranism and Calvinism and gold over to England.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Oh brother, come on that. Yeah. So so a lot
- 29:27Speaker 1: of times, you know, essentially, you you look at the
- 29:32Speaker 1: Roman Catholic Church and and you saw, like, uh, there
- 29:35Speaker 1: was a lot of rules that were added to Bible,
- 29:40Speaker 1: you know what I mean, A lot of a lot
- 29:41Speaker 1: of a lot of amendments were made and it became
- 29:45Speaker 1: seen as gospel truth. And all of this stuff is
- 29:47Speaker 1: happening in Europe. Meanwhile, the Bible is an Eastern you
- 29:51Speaker 1: know faith. You know that was Christianity was in Africa
- 29:55Speaker 1: long before whatever in Europe. But but but then you
- 29:59Speaker 1: get you know, John Calvin and Martin Luther and these
- 30:03Speaker 1: individuals who you know are railing against the Catholic Church
- 30:07Speaker 1: and UH and and they kind of create what we
- 30:09Speaker 1: call Protestantism UH today, which is taken root in America,
- 30:14Speaker 1: which is you know, pretty much what American Christianity is.
- 30:18Speaker 1: A lot of it is built off of of that perspective,
- 30:23Speaker 1: which is very European in nature. And so it though,
- 30:27Speaker 1: and I say it's about everything, you know, there's always
- 30:29Speaker 1: some truth mixed in with the lives. And that's how
- 30:33Speaker 1: people get fooled, is because there's always some truth mixed
- 30:35Speaker 1: in with the lives. And so there's lots of great
- 30:38Speaker 1: UH points and things that I think people can appreciate,
- 30:41Speaker 1: but you also have to remember that there's a lot
- 30:42Speaker 1: of cultural nuances that really don't fit who we are
- 30:47Speaker 1: and are not really applicable to the Bible. And so
- 30:51Speaker 1: I think people have to realize that when they when
- 30:54Speaker 1: they approach it and just realized how much the European
- 30:57Speaker 1: culture um has been transposed over to us more so
- 31:03Speaker 1: than actual guy's words that when I read that, that
- 31:07Speaker 1: opened my eyes. Man, That's why college changed my life.
- 31:11Speaker 1: I always tell people go to college, college because high
- 31:14Speaker 1: school they deny you son information. You see what Donald
- 31:16Speaker 1: Trump trying to do right now. You know, don't live
- 31:18Speaker 1: from don't want to don't want the truth to be
- 31:22Speaker 1: read because it acknowledges that when you're trying to take
- 31:25Speaker 1: down these Confederate statutes, there's a reason not to glorify
- 31:28Speaker 1: when you realize these folks were attempting and so we
- 31:31Speaker 1: called black lives matters thugs. You know that that you
- 31:35Speaker 1: gain knowledge, information, information by being allowed to openly learned.
- 31:41Speaker 1: That's what college did for me. And when I took
- 31:43Speaker 1: that course, man, it's like wow, really And and I
- 31:47Speaker 1: want to close with this interesting story that you had
- 31:50Speaker 1: when you was in Egypt and the God wasn't meaning
- 31:53Speaker 1: from a religious perspective, was from a historical perspective, and
- 31:58Speaker 1: she was talking about the worst Pharah and then you
- 32:01Speaker 1: and then you went from a religious perspective, you go,
- 32:03Speaker 1: what you're talking about? And so what because of the
- 32:12Speaker 1: fact that we are so guided by religion that we
- 32:17Speaker 1: can allow facts to be misinterpreted and that I'm chancing
- 32:23Speaker 1: to me. You have a great book, you great by
- 32:25Speaker 1: I think you just this dude read my book. I
- 32:33Speaker 1: have to be respectful and understanding that you didn't. You
- 32:37Speaker 1: know you did this for a reason, and your career
- 32:39Speaker 1: has allowed me to believe that you're trying to change
- 32:42Speaker 1: lives and really, in reading this book allowed me to
- 32:45Speaker 1: see a personal side of you, and then a side
- 32:48Speaker 1: of you that says, Okay, I gotta do better, I
- 32:51Speaker 1: gotta do better. I wake up with that whole attitude
- 32:54Speaker 1: I gotta do better, and I gotta do better. Not
- 32:56Speaker 1: for myself because I feel that I I do this
- 32:59Speaker 1: podcast as because I'm trying to make other people do
- 33:02Speaker 1: better or hear better, or learn better or get some
- 33:05Speaker 1: facts about it. This interview I'm doing with you is
- 33:07Speaker 1: an open interview about people hearing about somebody who's telling
- 33:12Speaker 1: them go by this book because it enabled Rushan McDonald's
- 33:14Speaker 1: see some things about Lacre that enables me to understand
- 33:18Speaker 1: that I can do better. I can be honest about myself.
- 33:20Speaker 1: If I feel there's a dark side of me, tell
- 33:22Speaker 1: somebody it's all right, it's all good. That's your book, man,
- 33:27Speaker 1: that I appreciate you Lakreze, I really do, man. And
- 33:30Speaker 1: like I said, this is my second time interview, and
- 33:31Speaker 1: you and I the first time. It's a good interview.
- 33:34Speaker 1: But this is an interview from a from a sole
- 33:36Speaker 1: perspective that our journeys are are definitely gonna be uh
- 33:41Speaker 1: even bigger in the future, man, because you're special, lucre
- 33:44Speaker 1: And I think you may got the ninth album dropping,
- 33:48Speaker 1: you know, dropped in August. You got October thirteenth. The
- 33:51Speaker 1: book comes out um on YouTube right now as a series.
- 33:56Speaker 1: But you and I, You and I got to my backyard.
- 33:58Speaker 1: I got a little lake. Man. We go fishing. That's
- 34:01Speaker 1: where I go. That's where I go to the crazy
- 34:03Speaker 1: life is bad for me. I have to go down
- 34:06Speaker 1: there and wash that water. That water at water at
- 34:09Speaker 1: water calms me, man, because and and and and and
- 34:12Speaker 1: my property. It drops down just enough. Well I can't
- 34:16Speaker 1: see any cars, No, I can't see anything. And it
- 34:19Speaker 1: just allowed me to look at that water man, and uh,
- 34:21Speaker 1: catch your fish and throw it right back and give
- 34:23Speaker 1: it back to God. Man. That's what I do. Brother, Man,
- 34:28Speaker 1: I love your brother. Thank you for taking the time. Man.
- 34:31Speaker 1: I hope this was a nice journey talking about a
- 34:33Speaker 1: part of your life that was very personal but more
- 34:35Speaker 1: important to book. I am restored How I lost my
- 34:38Speaker 1: religion but found my faith on Sale October. Thank you brother.
- 34:44Speaker 1: We'll be right back with more from Macha McDonald. The
- 34:47Speaker 1: money making conversations don't touch that down. Oregon donations save
- 34:51Speaker 1: lives and some Oregans can even be donated by a
- 34:53Speaker 1: living donor. August just National Minority Donor Awareness Months. So
- 34:57Speaker 1: let's check in with Dr Denay Simpson, Assistant for Fessor
- 35:00Speaker 1: of Surgery at Northwestern Medicine. Tell us about the African
- 35:03Speaker 1: American Transplant Access Program. So this is my baby. This
- 35:07Speaker 1: is a program that I have dreamt about creating since
- 35:11Speaker 1: I became interested in transplant as a trainee, and it's
- 35:14Speaker 1: a program designed to address the significant disparities that are
- 35:20Speaker 1: African American patients space. The program is designed to educate
- 35:25Speaker 1: patients about transplant, let them know what transplant can provide
- 35:29Speaker 1: to them, and to help them access the resources that
- 35:33Speaker 1: they find so scarce and so challenging to access in
- 35:38Speaker 1: order to get them on the transplant tact and back
- 35:41Speaker 1: to you know, some type of meaningful life. For more information,
- 35:44Speaker 1: visit n M dot org, Slash Radio Welcome back to

- 36:27Speaker 1: I brought her on the show with you guys. She
- 36:29Speaker 1: is the Mastermind Community. Masterminds a monthly business and life
- 36:34Speaker 1: coaching group membership that gives high quality training with support,
- 36:38Speaker 1: fund and accountability on building an expert brand, writing books,
- 36:43Speaker 1: goal setting, self care and more. Phenomenal, please work with
- 36:48Speaker 1: the Money Making Conversations, Kim cos well shot, I'm happy
- 36:52Speaker 1: to be with you right now. You're kind of people.
- 36:55Speaker 1: Well good for you know, I appreciate the compliment because
- 36:59Speaker 1: when I see what you're doing with your brain. First
- 37:02Speaker 1: of all, you know, following on LinkedIn, following on social
- 37:05Speaker 1: media and on LinkedIn. You know you look beautiful. You
- 37:09Speaker 1: look beautiful. Okay, you know that? What what? What? What
- 37:12Speaker 1: you want to talk about? It's about branding and presenting
- 37:15Speaker 1: yourself in a successful look and upbeat look because of
- 37:19Speaker 1: the fact that you're a motivator and in this business
- 37:23Speaker 1: you have to look a certain way, to talk a
- 37:24Speaker 1: certain way. Let's talk about the your brand and what
- 37:27Speaker 1: you're presenting out there in the entrereneural space. Let's talk
- 37:31Speaker 1: about that first. Well, yeah, you know, right now, I've
- 37:35Speaker 1: been talking a lot about uh, pivot on purpose, how
- 37:39Speaker 1: to pivot on purpose. And as we're recording this, as
- 37:42Speaker 1: you know, we're in the midst of this, uh, you
- 37:44Speaker 1: know a lot of upheaval, you know, with a pandemic
- 37:47Speaker 1: and racial unrest and all the civil unrest and everything
- 37:51Speaker 1: that is fair and unfair happening in the world. And
- 37:55Speaker 1: more than ever, we need to pivot on purpose. And
- 37:57Speaker 1: the way you do that is, you know, look at
- 38:02Speaker 1: your gifts and talents and uh and and look for
- 38:08Speaker 1: ways to express them given the current situation, so you
- 38:13Speaker 1: look for opportunities. It's a brand new perspective and so
- 38:17Speaker 1: my brand and I'm so proud of it. You know,
- 38:19Speaker 1: back in the day, we weren't thinking, you know, back
- 38:22Speaker 1: when you know you and I were doing what we
- 38:24Speaker 1: were doing, you're building ourselves in the comedy world. We
- 38:26Speaker 1: weren't thinking, oh, this is our brand, but knowing that
- 38:30Speaker 1: every step that you take is all um uh, every
- 38:35Speaker 1: step that you take, and as you are aware of
- 38:37Speaker 1: your gifts and talents, it's all a part of your brand.
- 38:40Speaker 1: It's all a part of the building of who you are,
- 38:43Speaker 1: the message that you've come here to to give. And
- 38:46Speaker 1: this is whether you're This is not even for people
- 38:49Speaker 1: who are in show business, not even for people who
- 38:51Speaker 1: are entrepreneurs. All of us now are are requested and
- 38:56Speaker 1: required to pull on our gifts, so to to to
- 39:00Speaker 1: I should said, um rely on our gifts in a
- 39:02Speaker 1: new way. And so I figured out a while ago
- 39:05Speaker 1: Rashan that just being a sitcom actress, while that is awesome,
- 39:10Speaker 1: it's not gonna is not enough. Just the stand up comedian,
- 39:14Speaker 1: while it's awesome, and there are people for whom that's
- 39:17Speaker 1: what they do, and they do well. I knew that
- 39:20Speaker 1: I had other aspects of my gifting that needed to
- 39:25Speaker 1: come forth. Therefore, the Kim Calls brand has the stand
- 39:29Speaker 1: up comedy, the sitcom actress, the author, and the entrepreneur
- 39:34Speaker 1: who teaches entrepreneurs how to find their gifts. And so
- 39:39Speaker 1: this is about expansions. This is also about at this
- 39:43Speaker 1: time when everything has slowed down and has stopped from
- 39:47Speaker 1: some people's perspectives, and it has. It has not slowed
- 39:51Speaker 1: down for me nor for anyone that I that I
- 39:55Speaker 1: want to um have any coach or have any influence over.
- 40:01Speaker 1: Now is the time to be pivoting on purpose and
- 40:05Speaker 1: be thinking of new way to use your gifts. It's
- 40:07Speaker 1: actually an opportunity and I am equal to the challenge
- 40:11Speaker 1: because if you are well, you know, I really love
- 40:15Speaker 1: your tone and you know, it almost feels like when
- 40:18Speaker 1: I'm talking to you, it's like I'm looking at I'm talking,
- 40:21Speaker 1: I'm listening to a professor, a professor, and uh, I'm
- 40:26Speaker 1: doing you know. I mean, you know, I interview a
- 40:29Speaker 1: lot of people, okay and so, and you're one of
- 40:31Speaker 1: my favorite people. I tell you that, and you're like, really, yes,
- 40:34Speaker 1: you are that you are because of the fact that
- 40:37Speaker 1: because of the fact that I always marvel at UH,
- 40:40Speaker 1: the ability to UH to be committed because what you're
- 40:44Speaker 1: doing is a bigger commitment than being an actress a comedian,
- 40:49Speaker 1: because people are responding to your brand from and say
- 40:53Speaker 1: you can change my life. Nobody's as a telling the
- 40:56Speaker 1: joke is to comman. Nobody said I change their life
- 40:58Speaker 1: telling the joke or write in the script. But what
- 41:00Speaker 1: you're doing with Community the Mastermind, you're changing lives. And
- 41:05Speaker 1: so that's then it comes to the responsibility of being
- 41:08Speaker 1: able to be there when people need an understand and
- 41:12Speaker 1: coaching them that the downtime is not a flaw. That's
- 41:15Speaker 1: part of the process, that downtime. Nobody's up forever. You know,
- 41:20Speaker 1: you have to be ready for that down moment so
- 41:22Speaker 1: you can go back up. And that's for the planning process.
- 41:25Speaker 1: And that's why you have a monthly subscription. Correct I do,
- 41:29Speaker 1: and I love you. Know. I thought I was real
- 41:31Speaker 1: cute when I came up with the name community. So
- 41:34Speaker 1: it's k I am you and I t wine mastermind
- 41:38Speaker 1: dot com. And what it really is about is creating
- 41:42Speaker 1: a community of like minded individuals in which my business partner,
- 41:48Speaker 1: and I coached them through building their business self care.
- 41:52Speaker 1: Like you know, we just did a class last week
- 41:54Speaker 1: on I noticed that most of the ladies just that
- 41:57Speaker 1: I'm overworked, I got too much of my plate. I
- 41:59Speaker 1: don't what to do next, and so we did a
- 42:01Speaker 1: masterclass on self care. Now, self care doesn't just mean
- 42:05Speaker 1: getting you a facial and getting you we've kite and
- 42:07Speaker 1: get your nails done. It really means rest. It means
- 42:12Speaker 1: setting boundaries. It means saying no where saying yes would
- 42:17Speaker 1: deplete you further. It means filling your cup so that
- 42:21Speaker 1: you can serve others. And so I am passionate about
- 42:25Speaker 1: helping people to find that find those resources. We give
- 42:31Speaker 1: them the resources to uplevel their lives so that my
- 42:34Speaker 1: ladies are more busy now than they were before the
- 42:38Speaker 1: pandemic hit because they realized, I've got a vision, I've
- 42:41Speaker 1: got to keep going, and I'm building an empire for
- 42:45Speaker 1: myself that will last longer than than than me. This
- 42:51Speaker 1: is about building legacy, and we know that our people
- 42:54Speaker 1: more than ever need to be having this legacy conversation.
- 42:58Speaker 1: And so I get to do that and it makes
- 43:00Speaker 1: me so happy. And I didn't know this was my
- 43:03Speaker 1: gift until I was in a down spiral, a downtime,
- 43:07Speaker 1: you know. Two thousand and eight, which was tough for everybody,
- 43:10Speaker 1: was when I figured out, oh wait a minute, I've
- 43:13Speaker 1: better figure out some other things to do and not
- 43:16Speaker 1: be reliant on a studio head saying yes, she's the
- 43:19Speaker 1: one or ocean to lose some weight or be or
- 43:23Speaker 1: you know, could she just could you just read the
- 43:25Speaker 1: lines as we wrote them. I'm like, Okay, I can
- 43:28Speaker 1: do that in this space. But in this space over here,
- 43:31Speaker 1: I can create a community, uh and and create change.
- 43:35Speaker 1: Do you know what I'm saying? And that's why that's
- 43:37Speaker 1: why I love talking to you, because of the fact
- 43:39Speaker 1: that your success pattern as a as an entertainer okay,
- 43:44Speaker 1: that's a that's an entertainer, okay. And you you absolutely
- 43:47Speaker 1: tell them the truth. Sometimes we we we don't know
- 43:51Speaker 1: what our gifts are because of the fact they were
- 43:53Speaker 1: so focused on what people telling us. This is where
- 43:56Speaker 1: you make your money, this is direct that's the door
- 43:58Speaker 1: you're supposed to open. Going that door, do what they
- 44:00Speaker 1: tell you to do, come out, and your live a
- 44:02Speaker 1: successful life. But that doesn't mean that that's the long
- 44:05Speaker 1: term success. And because in the end, the Kim I
- 44:08Speaker 1: talked to now. I'm not saying I didn't like the
- 44:11Speaker 1: Kim I knew before, but the Kim I talked to now,
- 44:15Speaker 1: it's such a worldly voice, such a voice of confidence,
- 44:19Speaker 1: such a voice of this is what I want to
- 44:21Speaker 1: do for myself. I can still do that other Stuffle
- 44:23Speaker 1: show and do it outstandingly, but it's my option now.
- 44:28Speaker 1: That is what I like about what I'm talking to,
- 44:30Speaker 1: and that's what I try to tell people on the show.
- 44:32Speaker 1: And when I see what you're doing, I gotta promote it.
- 44:35Speaker 1: And I'm mad because you did this this session, you
- 44:38Speaker 1: and you, and you just mentioned it on my show.
- 44:40Speaker 1: We just did a retreat and didn't even contact me,
- 44:42Speaker 1: and I keep telling your little skinny behind. I put
- 44:45Speaker 1: you on my social media. I got almost a million follows,
- 44:48Speaker 1: I got a name eight thousand, and it's got on
- 44:50Speaker 1: the car. I tell you, I'm gonna put you into
- 44:52Speaker 1: my newsletter this Wednesday. I ain't even asking the show
- 44:55Speaker 1: you love because you're brilliant, But guess what I gotta
- 44:57Speaker 1: hear about the stuff when you come on my show.
- 45:00Speaker 1: Should I be upset to not be upset with me?
- 45:04Speaker 1: Because we are going to collaborate because I want to
- 45:07Speaker 1: invite you to be a featured speaker in something else
- 45:12Speaker 1: I'm doing. I have something. I did this in May
- 45:15Speaker 1: and you're gonna love this. It was called the Captivating
- 45:18Speaker 1: Conversation Summit, and at the time it was called how
- 45:21Speaker 1: to Thrive with Certainty in Uncertain Times. It was such
- 45:26Speaker 1: a success that I decided to do I call it
- 45:29Speaker 1: cap CON Captivating Conversations to this time. It's about being
- 45:34Speaker 1: perfectly positioned to prosper. And you're hearing it right now,
- 45:40Speaker 1: everybody that's listening. I'm inviting Rashan McDonald to come and
- 45:43Speaker 1: be a featured speaker in the cap CON to All
- 45:47Speaker 1: details will be coming soon, so just hold on for
- 45:50Speaker 1: you accepted the accept because you don't want because because
- 45:55Speaker 1: because the fact of the matter is that you it's
- 45:59Speaker 1: a clear understanding that the COVID nineteen is not going
- 46:01Speaker 1: to go away. We're gonna go back to you know,
- 46:05Speaker 1: live events. There will be much mass wearing to be
- 46:08Speaker 1: a dominant participant in that process and I'm okay with that.
- 46:11Speaker 1: But the world but people have a clear understanding that
- 46:14Speaker 1: it's okay to do virtual events, to virtual retreats and
- 46:18Speaker 1: all these things and guess what you have to be
- 46:20Speaker 1: at the forefront of that to be able to take
- 46:22Speaker 1: advantage of it. What made you understand that there was
- 46:25Speaker 1: a business opportunity in the at this level? Kim? Well,
- 46:31Speaker 1: when when you know, it's so funny. It was a
- 46:33Speaker 1: domino effect. When so I've been making most of my
- 46:39Speaker 1: way through speaking, right, so when i'm you know, I'm
- 46:43Speaker 1: not on the show, and we'll talk about in the
- 46:44Speaker 1: cut in just a moment. But we filmed all that
- 46:47Speaker 1: in January. It was done. I had a full schedule
- 46:50Speaker 1: of speaking events, your women's empowerment events, entrepreneurial events, just
- 46:56Speaker 1: and it was a domino effect that one after the
- 46:59Speaker 1: other after the other after the other got they got canceled.
- 47:03Speaker 1: And I was like, oh my goodness, So you know
- 47:05Speaker 1: this is now March and April and May were canceled,
- 47:08Speaker 1: and in May, June, July and all just got canceled.
- 47:11Speaker 1: This it just kept going and some of these events
- 47:13Speaker 1: are like, we're not going to even try until I
- 47:16Speaker 1: was like, well, if my main source of connecting to
- 47:19Speaker 1: people other than online, uh, meaning like you know, doing
- 47:23Speaker 1: my own things online, is why don't I just create
- 47:26Speaker 1: a big thing online? And so captivating conversations provided me
- 47:31Speaker 1: an opportunity to do a five day summit with thirty speakers,
- 47:36Speaker 1: some of them you know from you know. I called
- 47:38Speaker 1: them my busin besties, my Hollywood besties, and my real besties,
- 47:42Speaker 1: and they each came on and talked about their their
- 47:46Speaker 1: perspective on how to thrive. At this time, I had
- 47:48Speaker 1: a meditation coach. I had you know, various business um
- 47:53Speaker 1: um folks teaching people how to take their business online.
- 47:56Speaker 1: It was like, wait a minute, I can headline my
- 47:58Speaker 1: own events all from my living room, and so why
- 48:03Speaker 1: not do that again? So yes, we'll be live again together.
- 48:06Speaker 1: I'm miss hugging folks. My team gets mad at me
- 48:09Speaker 1: because I look, people think clear to hug, you come
- 48:12Speaker 1: home in for hugs. What do you mean? You know
- 48:17Speaker 1: that that's that's that's uh, that's and and that's really
- 48:21Speaker 1: interesting you say that because you know, with this whole
- 48:23Speaker 1: COVID it just really changed the way we emotionally treat
- 48:29Speaker 1: each other, you know, basically, you know, it's it's a disconnect,
- 48:32Speaker 1: and you know, and I kind of I kind of
- 48:34Speaker 1: wonder how that's going to affect this generation of young
- 48:37Speaker 1: people and children because COVID nineteen is not gonna go away.
- 48:40Speaker 1: It's not gonna go away, and so I don't think
- 48:42Speaker 1: it's gonna go away. And I hate these I mean,
- 48:44Speaker 1: I know we have to wear a mask, but I
- 48:46Speaker 1: don't like that you can't see I'm smiling at you.
- 48:49Speaker 1: And is that that's exactly the truth, that's exactly true,
- 48:53Speaker 1: is that you don't understand. And and sometimes I see
- 48:56Speaker 1: people I try to smile that go they don't see
- 48:58Speaker 1: me smiling, dummy, they you know, they don't. I want
- 49:01Speaker 1: to acknowledge people that I feel good about them being
- 49:03Speaker 1: around me in the grocery store and things of that nature,
- 49:07Speaker 1: because it really does take your your temperament down a
- 49:10Speaker 1: notch knowing that you can't you can't let everybody know
- 49:14Speaker 1: what's going on in your life. So it's really, it
- 49:17Speaker 1: really is amazing that your value to me, your value
- 49:21Speaker 1: to me is what you're doing on this side of
- 49:24Speaker 1: the table. And the beauty of it is that you
- 49:26Speaker 1: know this is only going to get bigger for you.
- 49:28Speaker 1: And so what is the future. What is the future
- 49:31Speaker 1: of Kim Colds but also tom Unity, you know customary, Well,
- 49:39Speaker 1: so I've got the community mastermind. Like I said, that's
- 49:41Speaker 1: a monthly membership. Then I've got I just enrolled a
- 49:45Speaker 1: group of ladies and something I call speak and get clients.
- 49:49Speaker 1: So we know that this is called the money making show, right,
- 49:54Speaker 1: So it think people how to use their stories in
- 49:58Speaker 1: order to connect with stential customers and clients and sell
- 50:03Speaker 1: their products and goods and services. Nothing better than listen.
- 50:06Speaker 1: We can't smile with each other because of these dag
- 50:08Speaker 1: on nests. But when I share with you my story
- 50:11Speaker 1: of the challenges I've come through and why I created
- 50:14Speaker 1: this fill in the blank, this book, this course, this
- 50:18Speaker 1: product that now will solve your solution, the best way
- 50:21Speaker 1: for me to share it is through my story. So
- 50:23Speaker 1: I teach that. So there's that, and then there is
- 50:26Speaker 1: everything else that goes along with it. You know, the
- 50:29Speaker 1: products that that come out of the ideas. You know,
- 50:32Speaker 1: the T shirts if you think that there won't be
- 50:35Speaker 1: a T shirt for the for the captivating conversations, perfectly
- 50:38Speaker 1: posing the proper then all those things, and then the
- 50:42Speaker 1: and and more coaching, more and more coaching. And I
- 50:47Speaker 1: do all this while sitting in you know, like I'm
- 50:49Speaker 1: not a person right now that's creating my own creative projects.
- 50:54Speaker 1: In terms of Hollywood, like, I don't have a sitcom
- 50:57Speaker 1: idea that I'm trying to pitch right now. I have
- 51:00Speaker 1: a movie idea that I'm trying to pitch right now.
- 51:03Speaker 1: I'm letting keeping myself afloat and keeping myself out there
- 51:08Speaker 1: with this aspect of my gift while I audition and
- 51:11Speaker 1: do these other things. So I'm sure that one day
- 51:13Speaker 1: there will be a sitcom from me or you know something.
- 51:17Speaker 1: But waiting and not waiting for them has provided me
- 51:21Speaker 1: the opportunity to create my own. So there there might
- 51:23Speaker 1: be a new YouTube show coming. Oh I love that.
- 51:26Speaker 1: I'm gonna ask you about that. Come on, now, let's
- 51:28Speaker 1: talk about that. They gotta come, gotta come. It's time
- 51:31Speaker 1: for a podcast, which has to come. It has to go.
- 51:35Speaker 1: And I would, and I'm gonna tell you something, I
- 51:36Speaker 1: would do it. You know, podcasts are cool, but I
- 51:39Speaker 1: would do it through YouTube first. If I would do
- 51:41Speaker 1: it both, you know, if you can, you know, take
- 51:43Speaker 1: the audio, drop it on your YouTube and build those subscribers. Okay,
- 51:47Speaker 1: because of the fact that you you you you, I'm
- 51:50Speaker 1: just telling you got it, Kim, you got it. I
- 51:53Speaker 1: you know, I hear, I see it. It's it's it's
- 51:57Speaker 1: a it's a structure in your boars. You put one
- 52:00Speaker 1: sentence and one word after the next, no stumbling. You
- 52:03Speaker 1: you got the tone, you got the conversation. You've got
- 52:06Speaker 1: the ability to motivate, and you are very nice in
- 52:09Speaker 1: your approach. In other words, you know, it's like it's
- 52:12Speaker 1: like you're putting the hand on my back and saying
- 52:14Speaker 1: you can do it, and I'm gonna show you how,
- 52:16Speaker 1: which means that it's much more, much more empowering, because
- 52:21Speaker 1: you're not gonna leave me at the door and close
- 52:22Speaker 1: it behind me. Right. Well, and you're right, and I
- 52:27Speaker 1: think that we have enough people who are um, you know,
- 52:31Speaker 1: wanting to be sort of on top. Is the one
- 52:34Speaker 1: that's in control of everything. I'm saying, let's all grow together,
- 52:38Speaker 1: let's all build together. What do you bring to the table.
- 52:42Speaker 1: What do you bring to the table, What do you
- 52:44Speaker 1: bring to the table? Great, let's get together and and
- 52:47Speaker 1: inspire and motivate more. And and the thing is that
- 52:50Speaker 1: when we touch each other in that way, it reverberates,
- 52:54Speaker 1: that becomes, you know, the drop in the pond. So
- 52:57Speaker 1: the more we collaborate, the more we create experiences for
- 53:01Speaker 1: other people. With your platform, you have, you know, people
- 53:05Speaker 1: can listen and learn and and experience. And it's not
- 53:09Speaker 1: just you sitting in your ivory tower going I am Rashan,
- 53:12Speaker 1: and I can create. You're saying, I can create, and
- 53:15Speaker 1: then I can teach. I can create, and then I
- 53:17Speaker 1: can share and you can and I can spark it
- 53:20Speaker 1: in YouTube. And we need that more than ever. Right
- 53:23Speaker 1: now we can't. We've got to get out of our
- 53:25Speaker 1: silos um and I know that this pandemic, you know,
- 53:29Speaker 1: made us go indoors. We have to find new ways
- 53:32Speaker 1: to be with each other. And and this is, you know,
- 53:35Speaker 1: is just some of the ways to do it. You're
- 53:37Speaker 1: listening to money making conversations with Rashan McDonald. We'll be
- 53:40Speaker 1: right back. Cars today are like a computer on wheels.
- 53:43Speaker 1: But you can fix any of these new features yourself.
- 53:45Speaker 1: So when something breaks, it could cause you a fortune.

- 53:50Speaker 1: why you need Calls You. Calls You has affordable protection

- 54:11Speaker 1: care of the rest. They also offer complimentary twenty four
- 54:14Speaker 1: seven rows side of the system in a rental car
- 54:16Speaker 1: while yours is being fixed. Car Shield is America's number
- 54:19Speaker 1: one auto protection company for its lord's nearing nine dollars
- 54:22Speaker 1: a month. You can protect yourself from surprises and save thousands.
- 54:26Speaker 1: Call one eight hundred car six thousands and mentioned code
- 54:29Speaker 1: money M or any y, or visit car shield dot
- 54:32Speaker 1: com and use code money M or n e Y
- 54:35Speaker 1: to save ten percent. That's car shield dot Com. Code money.
- 54:38Speaker 1: A deductible may apply. Welcome back to money making conversations.
- 54:42Speaker 1: I'm your host, Sean McDonald. Imagine this. This is a
- 54:51Speaker 1: side note about you know, because uh, the things we're
- 54:53Speaker 1: talking about are not time sensitive their reality, you know,
- 54:57Speaker 1: the pandemic and watching how the my overtly affects the
- 55:01Speaker 1: African American community, the the you know, Black Lives Matter movement. Uh,
- 55:07Speaker 1: seeing white people be more upset than we are, which
- 55:11Speaker 1: is really you know, they ain't pulling you all out
- 55:16Speaker 1: of the car, you know that, right, right? But thank you,
- 55:20Speaker 1: thank you, thank you. I appreciate you. Love that. And
- 55:22Speaker 1: then you see and then you see the need for
- 55:25Speaker 1: a vaccine and uh, you know where where is your
- 55:29Speaker 1: comfort zone right now? You know, because you're a leader,
- 55:32Speaker 1: you're you're motivating us. But it also takes its toll
- 55:35Speaker 1: because you can't show week this, you can't show frail
- 55:38Speaker 1: the attack, you can't show that that hey, I'm this
- 55:42Speaker 1: is affecting me too, because you have to always to
- 55:44Speaker 1: be pro positive, pro planner, plow thinker. How's it affecting you? Well,
- 55:51Speaker 1: you know, that's interesting. It's finding that fine line between
- 55:56Speaker 1: allowing yourself to be vulnerable and other people to see
- 56:00Speaker 1: to be vulnerable. Um actually makes you even more human,
- 56:04Speaker 1: right and it makes you I think it helps people
- 56:07Speaker 1: to relate to you. I know that what I'm doing
- 56:10Speaker 1: right now for my self care is I am I
- 56:14Speaker 1: I can't go out, so I stay within. And what
- 56:17Speaker 1: I mean by that is, I'm doing a lot of
- 56:19Speaker 1: spiritual work at this time. I'm a lot of I'm
- 56:21Speaker 1: doing a lot of work where I fill my cup
- 56:25Speaker 1: so much so that when I do, when I am
- 56:28Speaker 1: in a position to help or coach or be that
- 56:32Speaker 1: I am as full as I can be even given
- 56:35Speaker 1: this ugly, this ugly experience, and there will be times
- 56:39Speaker 1: when I wring my head in my hands too and
- 56:42Speaker 1: just go like, what is going on? I don't know
- 56:45Speaker 1: what the answers are. There's so much out there that
- 56:48Speaker 1: is um confusing, and uh, I can be very depressing,
- 56:54Speaker 1: but it's it's upon me to keep my spirits up
- 56:57Speaker 1: so I can then keep the spirits of others. And
- 56:59Speaker 1: what I do is, I don't you know, I'm not
- 57:02Speaker 1: a person that's going to fall on the bed hooping
- 57:05Speaker 1: and holland crying and let people see it. Just I'll
- 57:08Speaker 1: let you know I did that. I let you know
- 57:10Speaker 1: I dried k tears and got it together. And this
- 57:12Speaker 1: is what I did to get myself together. And if
- 57:14Speaker 1: you want to fall in the bed hooping holland, I
- 57:16Speaker 1: don't know that I'm going to instagram that live, but
- 57:19Speaker 1: I will tell you that I just finished crying. I
- 57:22Speaker 1: got myself together and here's what I did. And so
- 57:25Speaker 1: it's finding that balance for yourself, finding that harmony. And
- 57:29Speaker 1: remember early on I put up a post that you know,
- 57:32Speaker 1: there were lots of people talking about being strong and
- 57:34Speaker 1: I'm a warrior and all that and then I put
- 57:37Speaker 1: up this post that said, if you need to cry, cry,
- 57:39Speaker 1: if you need to be quiet, be quiet. If you
- 57:42Speaker 1: need to pull the covers over your head for a minute,
- 57:44Speaker 1: it's perfectly understandable. And then get the tools that you
- 57:49Speaker 1: need to keep you going. Find the perspective, find the joy,
- 57:55Speaker 1: joyful moments in there, because they are there. There are
- 57:59Speaker 1: opportunities right now for us to connect in new ways
- 58:04Speaker 1: that that are required. And I believe Rashaan with all
- 58:09Speaker 1: my heart that the light must win over the dark,
- 58:13Speaker 1: you know, human right, that's what I'm talking about. I
- 58:17Speaker 1: can't even talk about. I can't talk, but I can't
- 58:20Speaker 1: talk like that. I felt like, you know, I felt
- 58:22Speaker 1: like I was in uh you know, like one of
- 58:24Speaker 1: the saw us well, you know, the hot rocks on
- 58:26Speaker 1: my back, and then you know, ain't nobody touching me.
- 58:30Speaker 1: I'm just hearing your voice, feel the heat felt. But
- 58:41Speaker 1: we couldn't last. We wouldn't. You know. When people say
- 58:43Speaker 1: it's the end of the end of everything, is we
- 58:45Speaker 1: know it? I'm like, yeah, the end of some stuff,
- 58:48Speaker 1: but we've lasted this long. There's no way that we
- 58:52Speaker 1: can't come through this. That's the way. Absolutely. I don't
- 58:55Speaker 1: believe you know, yeah, I truly believe and trust that
- 58:58Speaker 1: you understand what we're talking about. And then let's let
- 59:01Speaker 1: Billy is gonna be mad. I've talked like twenty three
- 59:03Speaker 1: minutes with you and we haven't even mentioned in the cut,
- 59:06Speaker 1: So I hope he doesn't hear this podcast now in
- 59:09Speaker 1: the cut. That's My Boy on Bounce TV every Wednesday
- 59:14Speaker 1: a p m. Eastern Standard Time. I interview Mark Curry.
- 59:18Speaker 1: He's new to the show currently. This is the seventh season.
- 59:21Speaker 1: You kind of mentioned it earlier, taped in in December
- 59:24Speaker 1: January time frame. Pre covid you on the show, what
- 59:27Speaker 1: your restaurant are, tell us about your character, and tell
- 59:30Speaker 1: us about this upcoming sea. Well, so first of all,
- 59:33Speaker 1: let me just say what an honor it is to
- 59:35Speaker 1: be working with this brother who said keep cold, just
- 59:38Speaker 1: come on in to work on Monday. You ain't got
- 59:40Speaker 1: the audition, you know, you know, the knowing that I
- 59:45Speaker 1: built up enough of a reputation, uh and and quality
- 59:50Speaker 1: of work that somebody could just say, you don't have
- 59:52Speaker 1: the audition, just I'll see you on the third or
- 59:54Speaker 1: whatever the date was. So that's number one. To be
- 59:57Speaker 1: on a set that is such a thing emily oriented set.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: You know, he's got Bentley who knows what he's doing
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: because he's been doing this for, you know, for a while.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: And he has a symboled the team of people who
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: just it just works, It just works. And so yes,
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: I am the current owner of Mabel's Tables. Uh, and um,
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: you know, I'm playing a character unlike I've ever played before.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: And and to have him say to you on the
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: first day of work, just do what you do, I'm like, really, yeah,
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: you get the words on the page. Who didn't play.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: I'm here to support you and if it doesn't work,
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: we'll say, try it again. And so that freedom was
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: such a joy that to have all crazy uh, and
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: to play with Mark Curry in this way, who is
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: the good things about Mark Curry is that he keeps
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: you on your toes, so you never know what he's
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: gonna do, and so that sharpens my tool, that sharpest mind.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: It's like, oh, he's a great person to play with
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: in that way because you just you just gotta be
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: ready for him to come with it. You gotta be
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: able to throw the ball back in his court. So
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: it was such a joy, you know. Dorian Wilson who
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: is also another one who um he serves as such
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: a wonderful um foundation and he's also someone that loves
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: when you play let you play with him in that way.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: So it was a joy to do and we did
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: it and it was done, and it's so much fun
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: that in the midst of all this craziness, now it
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: launches where we can provide joy and right when people
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: need it most right and so uh, it's it's just
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: it's just wonderful. Not Mabel's Tables. Now we have a
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: menu there are is it? Is it a restaurant that's
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: kind of like struggling on you you're turning customers away.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: What is Mayble's table and which he's saving over there?
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: Is it? Is it a soulful restaurategy? What is Mabel's Tables? Well,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: what's interesting? And I have to pay omar to uh
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: to our lovely Lord Hayes girl, everybody, Dorian Wilson. That
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: from the Parker Kid Lost and he's from the Parker's
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: Colinas spirit. That's from Bernie Maxhell. Laura Hey, it just
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: like I walk in there bo I started kissing at everybody, right,
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: So Laura Hayes has at this point left Mabel's table,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: and if I had to send word to her to say, Laura,
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: I hope you all right, right right, I love you
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: some Lord Hayes. So it's her restaurant, and I don't
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: know what what story because you know, I don't know
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: what story they tell that she's no longer running it.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: But now there's a woman named Trish. I'm Trish and
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: and so we served soul food but done very exotic,
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: you know, lama legs, you know, uh, goat of lips.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: Uh see, you just sold food. People don't put enough
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: food on the plate, but it's put the words are
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: longer than the food that you give me. Okay, yes, yeah,
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: you know, wonderful ext you know it's somebody you know,
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: you know, perhaps a piece of wildlife, you know, didn't
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: quite make it out back. We take them and put
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: them on a plate, so you know the beauty of
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: you know, this is if we're talking to Kim cos
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: she's starring in the series seventh season of In the Cut,
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: created by my Man Bentley Evans of Mark Lawrence Creativity
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: Fame and Jamie Fox. That's why I made him. I
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: was co executive producer on Jamie Fox Show when he
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: was running in and creating it with Jamie Fox at
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: the time, and in the cut eras every Wednesday on
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: Bounce TV at a PM Eastern Standard time. But more importantly,
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: you know you're still entertaining us from from a comedic
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: actress standpoint, but community mastermind dot com really is the
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: brand that to me is so needy to that now.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: And like I said, uh, anytime I get a chance
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: to talk to you, I just gotta let you know
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: what a blessing that you are and what you're doing.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: And so because we all have those moments, is it
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: is it worth? It? Is? It is? It is? It
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: is anybody acknowledging this and then the store And That's
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: what I'm just letting you know. I'm acknowledging that, and
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: I'm acknowledging it with pride. I'm acknowledging it with a
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: smile every time I see your photo come across my
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: timeline on LinkedIn, on social media posts. Because you are
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: proving that you can't control your destiny. You can still
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: do what you do, but at least you get a
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: clear understanding that I am happy and I'm changing lives
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: the way I want to change lives, and it has
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: nothing to do with a script or somebody saying cut exactly.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: And that's there for me too, and that's I'm joyful about.
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: That was to call me. I'm gonna going over and
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: do this. I'm gonna go ahead, going over and do
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: this right quick. And speaking of this, don't forget what
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about captivating conversations from it too. Well,
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: we know I'm gonna say goodbye right now, but hold on,
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna get that number and so we can connect.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: But I want to wrap this up again as Kim
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: Cole's Kim Unity Mastermind dot Com. Also in The Cut
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: every Wednesday on Bounce TV a p m. Eastern standard
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: of time. If you want to hear any episodes of

- 1:06:28Speaker 1: Welcome back to money making conversations. I'm your host Sean
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: McDonald on my show today. Have two guests. Someone introduced
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: him separately. One I've known for a long time in
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: the in the Steve Harvey Morning Show days. His name
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: is ron Gil Yard. He's a trusted marketing and media
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: executive who has advanced the initiative of companies and individuals
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: in the technology, marketing and music industries for over twenty
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: five years. He's a four thinking strategist. Guiliard has been
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: able to consistently drive revenue growth, market penetration, and create
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: developments for all his clients. Also on the show, first
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: time he's on the West coast. He already told me.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: His name is Will Campbell. He's the co founder and
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: CEO a Quantasy LLC. Will's more than twenty five year
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: career can be most easily summarized by the quote, if
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: you want to come up with new answers, you have
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: to ask new questions. With his vision that he's co
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: founded and led the growth of the agency to what
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: now Mounster more than sixty people and one fully integrated
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: cultural marketing force. Please welcome to Money Making Conversations, Chief
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: Growth Officer of Quantasy and Associates, where he is also
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: a partner with co founder and CEO a Quantasy LLC,
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: Ron Gillyard and Will Campbell. Thank you, sir, I had
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: to get a lot of you got a lot of
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: talking about man. You know, what I'm saying. But when
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: you have something like when Off, I would just letting
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: them know about the show. Everybody. I was just setting
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: up what this show really about. And I hope they
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: took us a compliment. I felt that in the industry
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: that we that I try to reach the entrepreneurial space,
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: the information space. YouTube guys are to me, it's recognizable
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: talents like Kevin Hard type talents, like the high profile
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: celebrity talents. You've got some celebrities in your own right
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: as what you guys are doing in this particular brand
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: of business. And since you are the co founder and
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: the CEO of Quantasy LLC, Well, Cowbell, tell us what
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: that what that company does? Initially, Yeah, thanks for Sean. UM.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: So we're creative services agency UM. I think the shortest
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: way to put it is we help businesses and brands
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: grow by Christian culture in the right direction UM. And
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: the services that we provide extended entertainment, technology, marketing, branding,
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: UM and how we bring culture into those worlds to
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: help grow businesses and brands. Right, So, now that's that's
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: the creative shot. Then then run you come in. I
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: see revenue growth tied to your name explain to me
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: and I listen to exactly what does that mean? UM,
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: that means finding opportunities to to grow the company from
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: a financial standpoint, from revenue standpoint, from a side standpoint,
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: and helping our partners. You know, the sign of a
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: good partner is someone who not only you know, who
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: pays you money. Yeah, you're an employee, if they just
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: pay you, but if you're able to show them ways
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: in which they can grow their business and elevate you know,
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: their business and grow their revenue, then that's the sign
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: of a good partnership. So with the clients that we
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: have and hope to have, UM, we've always tried to
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: not only you know, be there and be creative from
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: the marketing side, but we look at that business Will
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: and myself and and other members of the team, and
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: we try to find ways if they're not thinking about something,
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: to illuminate that for them. I used to always say,
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: sometimes you're so to ze running the store that you
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: you you spend no time growing the store or you know,
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: so just finding ways to to to increase profitability. Where
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: it's like to say, you know, you can't make the Hamburger,
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: clean up the store and drop the fries at the
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: same time, somebody got to be working a cash register
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: to you know, And that's really what this is all about.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: When when I try to interview people on these shows,
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: I try to get information about what money making conversation
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: really is all about. It's about these different layers that
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: we have out there. And so Will, why did you
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: why did you bring up individual like Ron into your company? What?
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: What what visionary needs did you have to have somebody
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: in your platform? Yeah, you know, it's interesting, man. When
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: when we first started this company, you know, we saw
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: these different worlds. Uh, there were people in the entertainment space, um,
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: and then on a whole different plane, there were people
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: in the tech space, UM. And then in a whole
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: different world there were people in the marketing space. And
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: they were all very sort of like disconnected units. But
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: I always saw it as one space. I always saw
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: how technology works with entertainment works with brand development as
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: one thing. And then as as Ron and I developed
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: our friendship first he instantly occurred to me and somebody
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: that just got that, and it's it's a way that
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: he had been working for years and years. He and
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: I started off on some entrepreneurial things doing some things together. Um,
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: And it came to the point where it was like, hey, man,
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: I would love for you to come over here and
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: help me grow this. We had a similar vision um
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: as well as with my other partner, and so it
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: really was just a clear understanding and he has so
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: much knowledge and insight into where we were trying to
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: take the business. It just made a lot of sense
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: for us. Okay, now he now he threw something out
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: in I gotta ask you what knowledge it insight did
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: you have? Ron? I just I'm just just being curious here.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: You know, I'm listening to a visionary, solved person over there.
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: And I love you. You know, I've always loved your
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: personality because I don't care what was going bad, good,
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: You're always rong. You stayed right there, you stay centered.
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: So what what what qualities did you have that Ron?
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: That that really just just stepped the whole process that
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: made it a great partnership. UM. No better question for Will,
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: but I will. Sometimes sometimes you gotta talk about yourself. Okay,
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: other people talk about you, but sometimes you gotta talk
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: about this because a lot of people don't do that.
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: That's what social media is all about. Social media is
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: is the form I call it. We live in the Mohammad,
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: the Mamahali era, That's what I call people. Because you
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: gotta tell people the greatest now because he's he branded it,
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: but now people are doing it now. So I'm not
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: saying you gotta tell the people you the greatest. But
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: there are qualities that people see in people like you
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: that some people need to like understand that has value.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: And I met you in the record game, you know,
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: when I was listening to the player music. We had
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: all these radio show, radio stations and things like that.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: That's how I relationship. Now you're in a whole different platform,
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: and a lot of people don't know how to make
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: that transition. They feel like they're stuck. Yeah. So for me,
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: I've always had a week not me mentality. I have
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: always tried to analyze. I think my one of my
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: biggest faults is also one of my biggest biggest assets,
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: and I needed to down downsize the fault part of
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: that and and but recognize it. I was never comfortable
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: in the space that I was in. I was always
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: looking towards the next what's next. When I was an intern,
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: I was trying to imagine I came to work every
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: day dressed like I was the director of marketing or
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: director of A and R. When I was that, I
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: was came as if I was the vice president. And
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: I just came to work every day thinking like I'm
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: gonna run this particular job that I have. Is if
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: I'm the president of this organization. I'm not, but I
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: know that I want to be. So I was always
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: off in the future. Um, I think that you know
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: you said, I'm always calm. I think this is me angry,
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: this is me mana glad whatever. So I'm always senator,
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: I'm always watching. I learned at the early age that
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: you were gonna learn so much more by listening than talking.
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: So it was I think it's the reason guy gave
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: us two years in one mouth. The other thing is
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: I was in a business that, in the music business,
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: my job was to spot talent. But I didn't just
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: look for people that could singer dance. I also looked
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: for people that had had a different kind of talent
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: and executive talent. And I've worked, you know, with some
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: really really smart, legendary if you will people. And I
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: said when I got in the music business that when
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: they wrote the book about hip hop. When they wrote
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: the book about R and B music, Um, I at
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: least one of the sentence in that book, right, you know,
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: you know, if I get a chapter, so be it.
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: And but I became robbing to a lot of Batman's right.
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: And I worked alongside Andre Horrell. I worked alongside Sean
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: Combs or p Diddy or Puff Daddy or Puff or
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: Diddy or whicheveryone we're going with this week. So I
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: worked alongside Clive Davis, Jimmy Iveen, um, you know, Irving
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: aids Off, Simon Rinshaw, some of the best in the
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: business to do it and to be honest. When I
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: met Will, I always tell this funny story, which I'll
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: you know, it's long, so I'll breathe it. I realized Will,
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: because sell water to a drowning man, you could sell
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: saying to an era. And I was like, there's something
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: about this guy. And he had similar qualities to some
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: of those people that I named that I've worked with
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: in the music business. And so it was a no
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: brainer for me to try to be helpful. And I
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: had a perspective and I had this worldview, and you
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: get elevated to this in music, you get elevated to
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: this somewhat unreal perch of that you know everything when
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: you don't. But since I was on that perch, I
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: was gonna try to read and and consume as much
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: knowledge as possible. And I'm not a talkative guy normally,
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: but if I become comfortable with you, it's hard to
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: shut me up when I think I know something. Definitely, Uh,
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: you have to skip the gift of gap. We all
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: need to have that in order to be successful in
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: this business. I'm speaking to just reintroducing you guys to
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: my audience. Roun Guillyard and Will Campbell Quantity and Associates
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: Quantity LLC, which especially a fully integrated cultural and marketing force.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: Um Ron is on the West East coast and Willows
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: on the West coast. Now, Will he said something, You
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: said that you can sell water to a drowning man. Okay,
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: So now the pandemic hit. Now, when the pandemic hit
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: in Marching, this country said we have to shut down.
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: All my staff became employed via zoom and so I
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: don't have sixty people, but I got enough that I
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: had to keep the checks rolling to greet some type
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: of synergy. And also trying to continue to make money,
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: a plan to make money. So with the skilled level,
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: did you have being able to sell water to to
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: the water to a drowning man? What did you do
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: when it and what was your perspective when the COVID
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: ainteen hit and the impacted your business practices? UM? I
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: mean it was you know, when it comes to I
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: think the idea of selling two people, it's about how
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: you can help. And now's the question we asked, how
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: can I help? Where can I help? UM? And and
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: helping people sells itself. UM. And you know, I don't
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: think people play enough value on what it means to
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: provide value to others. So what we did we really
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: looked at UM the people in our world and what
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: challenges they were facing, what new challenges they were facing
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: in light of the pandemic UM and where we could
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: come in and play a role. And so for each
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: of our different clients that were different issues that they
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: were suffering to look like, we also looked internally, but
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: as for instance, UM, knowing that we have in house
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: engineering and technology chops. UM, we look that event business
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: which had gotten decimated because you know, people couldn't produce events.
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: We had clients that had events scheduled that they had
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: to cancel. We have friends that are event producers, UM,
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: and so we delivered technology that we had already been
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: working on to create virtual events and UM. You know
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: people in the business. For instance, working closely with Rich
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: Dennis Essence, who's also a visionary, great guy, UM, their
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: Essence Festival, which as you know, is a massive, massive,
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: massive event people generally it was gonna be canceled. So
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: not only do do those six hundred thousand people within
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: the black community missed out on this huge opportunity, there's
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: a whole laundry list of clients and sponsors and all that.
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: So this would be a big revenue hit, right, So
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: bye bye. Partner with Rich and his team to deliver
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: the Essence Fest. Virtually, he's got a great group of
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: producers and staff on his side as well. By a
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: partner with him to deliver it, he was able to
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: help those clients to recover that revenue and still serve
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: his mission and his and his audience and his Essence
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: subscribers and so like I said that that sells itself, UM,
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: And so identifying those opportunities to help people is really
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: where it starts. We'll be right back with more from
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: Maga McDonald and money making conversations. Don't touch that doubt.
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: Oregan donations save lives, and some organs can even be
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: donated by a living donor. August is National Minority Donor
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: Awareness Months. So let's check in with Dr Denay Simpson,
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: Assistant Professor of surgery at Northwestern Medicine. Tell us about
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: the African American Transplant Access Program. So this is my baby.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: This is a program that I have dreamt about creating
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: since I became interested in transplanted trainee and it's a
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: program designed to address the significant disparities that are African
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: American patients space. The program is designed to educate patients
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: about transplant, let them know what transplant can provide to them,
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: and to help them access the resources that they find
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: so scarce and so challenging to access in order to
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: get them on the transplant path and back to, you know,
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: some type of meaningful life. For more information, visit n
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: M dot org Slash Radioations. I'm your host, Sean McDonald.
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: You know, it's really interesting that you brought up to
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: essence because of the fact it is a massive live
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: event and massive live events or any live events. You know,
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: it affected individuals, tour and stand up comedians, singers, large tours,
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: movie theaters, anything that had mass attendance was affected by
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: the country shutdown, as well as still affected by the
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: COVID naeteen and the virus that may be encountered without
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: or SoC social distancing their masks. Now do you feel
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: that they're because of the pandemic that the virtual industry
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: When I say that virtual entertainment side has been even
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: more developed when I watched the MMIs last night and
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: just watching, uh, you know, I've been fortunate to participate
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: in some self produced virtual events myself. What do you
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: think the Essence Festival would always would consider doing a
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: virtual version of it because of the success that had
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: this year, or you think that the live way is
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: the only way that they're going to continue to do business.
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: And what a great question. And here and here's what
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: I say. I'm gonna go back to go forward. So,
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: as you know, in recent years, a lot of the
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: business skylind whether it's Coachella, whether it's Essence Festival, showing
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: about music, festivals, conferences, complex coun you name it and
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: from and these were huge revenue centers, right, sponsors for products,
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: sales for tickets, for all of those kinds of things.
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: But what you've seen recently over the last years is
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: how much these a lot event experiences were working to
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: become more digital anyway. Right, So you go to event,
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: now you're saying, uh, photo ops for Instagram and hashtags
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: to track this and to sell this, because creating an
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: epicenter of culture and activity that could then spawn a
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: global reach, right to create more engagement um from all
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: around the world. So I think that global perspective of
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: a live event is only going to continue. I think
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: during purely virtual events, I think there's some fatigue around that,
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: and so I think even though they have swelled, when
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: the actual physical events come back, it's going to enhance
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: the virtual eventage, right because now it's like, hey, you
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: can participate pay in this event um in addition to
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: the physical versus instead of right, it's not instead of
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: it's how it's how they work together. So now you
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: can have a coach olla, a conference kind of essence best,
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: but still have a global reach where people can kind
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: of participate and grow. So I think that physical events
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: will come back, and they'll come back with even greater
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: digital extensions and capacity going forward. And so with that
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: being said, Rod I was talking to the agency that
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: represents the Air Force and we were talking about virtual events,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: and they were saying, is you know they've not seen
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: enough yet to quantify quantify the success or whether these
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: virtual events were because you know, in a live event,
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: you know, when somebody walks through the door, you can
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: that's a person. You can you can get their information,
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: get their background information, and they can be part of
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: the data growth and you can you can you can
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: justify uh that action. Now when you're getting into this
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: virtual world, which is a potential new revenue growth stream
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: for for you to be able to go out there
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: and talk to new partners or old partners, how does
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: this conversation I just had with Will and the conversation
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: I just had with this agency that represents the Air
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: Force come coming to play with you and what you're
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: when you're when you're trying to generate revenue growth. I
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: think the thing that I tell someone and I didn't
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: I'm not gonna take credit for this quote. Well, there's
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: two quotes that I try to tell try to slip
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: into every conversation that I have with someone about growth.
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: One of them is predicting rain doesn't count building the
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: arc does. There are a lot of people that could
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: tell you what's gonna happen and what they think is
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: gonna happen and all of this other stuff, and they
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: do nothing and then they're still not prepared when that
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: thing happens. Right um. The other one is the quickest
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: way to failure is always is saying but that's not
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: how we've always done it. And so I think to
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: paggyback on the question that you ask Will and and
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: and also to answer the question that you've just asked
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: me is and I'll tell this story. We started building
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: that virtual platform that Will spoke of before COVID nineteen.
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: We we started building it off an idea of what if, again,
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: asking different questions, right, um, what if I can experience?
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: What if I want to experience the live event? And
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: then we'll use essence as an example. There are things
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: that essence that you are missing out on when you
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: make certain decisions right about what you're going to do
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: and how you're going to spend your time. Yes, everyone
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: is in the stadium at night, but there are seminars
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: by day. There's you know, they take over the convention center,
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: you can go shopping, you could do all of these
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: other things, and all of these so you make choices
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: and you don't get to see other things. Virtual allows
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: you to get that rest you need for that Janet
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: Jackson concert tonight and still see that panel with Rashan
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: during the daytime. Right, And so from a revenue growth standpoint,
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: this person has spent money on the ticket, spent money
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: on a hotel, renting a car, or engaging in ubers
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: and transportation, building that local economy, building money for you know,
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: Essence Coffers. Where's the revenue? Where's the growth potential? I'm
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: gonna charge him to log in to see Rashawn's panel,
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: and he could still be in his hotel room. He
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: or she could still be in their hotel room preparing
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: for a concert that they're gonna see tonight. So there
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: was always I have a comic con analogy, I have
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: a complex kind analogy, have all of those other things.
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: So I think the other thing is the barrier of entry.
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: We all had to sign into Zoom. I clicked the button,
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: I clicked on the link. Someone in your organization let
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: me in, and we're here. But if you wanted to
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: gather more information, then I fill out something so that
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: same data that you're getting by might be physically buying
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: that ticket through ticket Master or whatever for that live event,
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: you can gather that gap data and a more accurate
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: version of that data digitally. And so all of that
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: helps with UM growth and thinking about UM how to
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: engage both in a physical and digital world. I love
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: before COVID nineteen, I think people thought it was one
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: or the other, and we've we always viewed it as
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: one Ambia, which is very smart when you when I
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: see companies like Disney when they do what they're doing
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: with the movie move On, which they yet to tell
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: anybody how much money they made so far, when they said, look,
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: we got eighty million subscribers and we're gonna charge thirty
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: dollars a ticket. If we can pull in ten percent
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: of that and still put this in the movies. There
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: that ten percent that we got, we get we control
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: one hurt percent. And the thing that you know, one
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: of the major reasons of just hearing numbers like that
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: and talking to a growth a spirit and talking to
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: a founder or a visionary can consider both of you
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: guys visionaries when I when I talk about the futures
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: that the technology aspect, and one thing is always angered
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: me guys, is that blacks has always been viewed as
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: less less capable of delivering the technically advanced are the
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: the technically perceived well organized platform? Do you what? What
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: do you have to fight against will when you talk
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: about your your business when people and not saying people
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: are doing this. Let me just get that cleared up.
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: I'm just talking about my experience and dealing with people
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: having a having a point of view that can be
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: limited based on what they perceived I can do as
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: an after that an American or as a company, how
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: do you walk through that next step and and present
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: your company is capable of doing everything you know? UM?
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: The short answer is sometimes you can show them better
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: than you can tell them. UM. And I think that
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: you have to UM put your faith in your team
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: and the work and do what you can UM. Now
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: that said, there are a lot of barriers to access
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: that we face, UM, limitations to resources that we face,
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: and so at the same token, I'm fully aware of that,
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: and I think just because maybe I've been able to
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: have some success doing X y Z doesn't guarantee that
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: the next person in my position is going to have
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: a fair shot, and so I don't just look at
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: it it's like, oh, well, hey, look we did it.
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: And even though that there's those that have done more
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: and have had greater success than us, I know that
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: there's always like various limitations and so UM. With that
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: in mind, we still spend a lot of our time
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: trying to break down those barriers with some of the
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: philothrophic work that we do, with some of the advocacy
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: work that we do. I serve on the Los Angeles
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: County UM Small Business Commission for that exact reason, to
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: find ways to advocate for resources and opportunities for small
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: businesses UM in in l A, which is largely UM minority.
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: So UM, for me personally, it's about continuing to trying
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: to partner with the right people gain access. For instance,
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: in this opportunity to be able to partner with you
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: will share knowledge and information to to an audience that's
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: come to trust what you're doing and what you have
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: to say UM, and then just continue to focus on
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: doing really good work UM so that people you know,
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: gain trust in what you're doing. We know that reason.
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: I bring that up because I've been fortunate to be
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: in this business, especially on the radio side, from two
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: thousand and listen watch agencies to go from black agencies
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: to the term multi cultural agencies, and then they started
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: giving up the money and the money seems to be
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: lesser for the on the black side of the agency
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: is trying to target that particular audience. And so now
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: in the middle of a pandemic, and we've seen a
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: tremendous surge. When I say surge, I'm talking about Black
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: Lives Matters. We've seen HBCU donations, We've seen companies announced
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: that they have money set aside for minority supplier development,
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: but not letting you know that minorities suppliers also include
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: white women. Okay, But and so when you're dealing with
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: all these things, do you feel there's an opportunity now
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: to really put your business into the forefront run or
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: will most of you guys can answer it one of
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: the time. I just want to get a sense of
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: looking at what we are the landscape now all we're
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: able to really jump out there now and participate. Um,
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: you know, I would say into a certain degree, yes, Um,
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: I think that what we've seen and just to sar
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: some positive light on it. I think the the global
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: awakening that you've seen has has a lot of people
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: done meenuinely reacting to the recent events and genuinely saying no,
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: we can't allow this to continue, and genuinely trying to
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: engage in conversations and looking to support black businesses and
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: trying to find out what they can do when we
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: see the rise of ally ship and I think that
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: there's a certain genuine nature of that UM And I
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: think there's a recognition of some of the some of
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: the some of the black milses getting our partentialies have
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: been doing great work for decades, you know, phenomenal work
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: for decades. So I do think that there's a little
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: bit of a broader opportunity that I think that we're
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: happy about. It's not enough, right. The playing field has
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: not been leveled, right. The system hasn't been dismantled yet.
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: But to answer your question, I do think that we're
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: seeing opportunities open up and some more focus. UM. But
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: but the work is nowhere. They're close to being finished.
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: It's not it's not. Before I Before I wrap up
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: the calle, they want to thank you guys for the time,
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: and you've given me to just talk about your brand,
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: talk about YouTube visionaries from a standpoint of what you
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: deal with now before the pandemic, while the pandemic and
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: post pandemic, because we have to always think that there
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: is a future, and if you don't plan for the future,
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: then then there's no opportunity to see success. Now, there's
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: an app called the True Voice and Mindfulness app for
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: women of color. Roy what exactly is that? Wow? True Voice,
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: so true voice. Um M. We looked out over the
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: landscape and I'm talking to two black men here talk
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: about we look over the landscape and so we have
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: we try to look through with through the lens of business,
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: but also through a cultural lens. And we noticed that
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: in the world of mindfulness and and as we deal
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: with we deal I hear people talk about wearing the
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: same we're all in the same storm. I mean, no,
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: we're all in the same boat. We're all in the
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: same boat. And no we're in the same storm. We're
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: definitely in different boats, right. And so when you look
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: at these apps and meditational apps and things like that,
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: that we're very general market and there weren't very specific two.
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: Um the cultural realities of women of color or people
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: of color, and again, predicting rain doesn't count building the
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: arc does. We decided that we wanted to play a miss,
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: that it would be great to introduce something that had
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: that hits some of the cultural beats of that. These
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: other mindfulness or um apps, these mindfulness apps were missing
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: out on the other part of it is you know,
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: see your other question earlier question. Once again, an industry
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: was was growing and being valued at hundreds of millions,
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: if not billions of dollars, and people of color to
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: the degree that they were being thought of, We're only
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: thought of as consumers. You weren't thought of as stakeholders
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: in these businesses. And we had seen that in so
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: many other industries before that. We decided that it be
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: good to introduce something like this as fathers of daughters,
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: as friends that have each other to lean on and
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: talk through other things. Someone who believes in counseling. Um
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: Will's mother, it's a clinical psychologists, grew up, you know,
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: spent her career in that business. It was something that
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: we saw the value in and the importance of, and
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: so it wasn't much like you know, to put it
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: in layman's terms, think of calm or headspace, but through
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: the lens, the cultural lens of minorities or women of color.
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: It's really uh, thank you for that, that great response.
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: I know that as a black man, and and seeing
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: like you said earlier, will the cultural rage worldwide about
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: what happened with the George Floyd. You know, I'm talking
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: to black men. You know the experience of work we
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: have to deal with when a policeman I don't I
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: don't comfortably. I don't feel comfortable when the policeman stops
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: me because I don't know why he's stopping me, and
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: it doesn't. And when he got pulled out of Mercedes
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: Being I told Steven name Smith, I said, the game
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: and change they pulled him out of that wouldn't have
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: beat up car they pulled him out of. They pulled
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: him out of Mercedes Bend, and so that that that
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: level of disrespect showed itself. But what also came out
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: of this was it was really interesting. And a lot
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: of my white friends called me that weekend and go,
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: I didn't know that was that was the question they said.
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: I didn't know. They said that you you actually have
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: to deal with this. I said yeah, and so being
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: able to almost lived my life through a lens of honesty.
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: Now I'm not saying I didn't because I'm Rushan McDonald.
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you how I feel and what I fear.
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: But if people are looking at me with a sense
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: of understanding what I have to deal with, will help
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: us win and when I when I And that's why
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: I wanted to bring YouTube gentlemen on the show, because
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: you're in a world that you know, sometimes people don't
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: appreciate you and we'll say you can only do this,
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: And we talked about the American experience, but I know
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: for a fact you can. Guys can do any experience.
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: And so but sometimes you say, I'm gonna win here
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: to win here the financial pictures. So with that being said,
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: well are you what is the future of your company?
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: What is you? You? You? You broke Ron into this,
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: Ron is the growth right a partner. What is the
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: future of your company and your brand? Yeah? I think
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: that it's um to one is to get better at
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: making the pivot. I think that as we go forward,
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: you know, one of the single most important skills that
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: we can develop is the ability to pivot. And that's
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: how you play the long game, right, UM, because so
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: much information that is coming out of so fast things happen,
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: things change all the time, and so really honing the
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: skills that make us good at being able to pivot.
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: And I think when you lear that with what we
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: about earlier on even the reason that you that you're
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: doing the show in terms of helping people, and when
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: you layer that day and how can I help people?
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: Helping people sometimes means being philanthropic, sometimes it means providing
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: a service for a fee. In terms of developing a business, right,
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: So I think for us, it's focusing on those two things.
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: How do we continue to add value in markets in
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: UM with partners UM and how do we make sure
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: that we're always prepared to pivot? And you know, we
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: don't get too we don't fall in love too much
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: with any one idea or any one project that we
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: can't you know, take the blinders off. So I think
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: the future of the business is that being open minded,
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: being curious, being flexible UM and always leading with UM.
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: How do we help push culture in the right direction?
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: Awesome guys, UM, I do BI monthly. I do it
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: A ninety thousand fan club newsletter goes out twice a month. Um,
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: I love to put the true Voice app description banner
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: in there, if you don't mind. I have also have
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: a platform called HBCU Awards. I'd like to drop that
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: banner there because I'm about authenticity, about organically telling the
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: story and true voice. I downloaded it. I have a daughter,
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: she's twenty four years old. She's graduating from college, trying
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: to find her voice, and any platform that allows her
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: to feel comfortable and communicating and seeing people like her
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: and comfortably communicating those values. It's important to me and
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: I just wanted to offer that. Uh Ron will uh live.
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: I think she set up this interview. If you get
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: that banner to me, I appreciate dropping in there. And again,
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: thank you for coming on the show. Man. I appreciate

- 1:43:53Speaker 1: the Netflix films Someone Great, Always Be My Being, Always

- 1:44:08Speaker 1: a second season. She's talented and she's beautiful, and she's
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: starting her new Netflix stand up comedy special. Michelle Buto.
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: Welcome to Otavia Beutopia. Dad are you are accounting. You
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: listed all the things like I gotta start bringing W
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: nine to W tense is interview. Well, you know when
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: you're busy and you're talented, like you just got renewed
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: your a BT plus show got renewed. Correct, Yes, now
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: I saw the special first. It was first of all,
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: you know what they do with Netflix? Uh, they sent
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: me an account. I put my patchword. It was on Saturday,
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: and I was in my bed and I started watching
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: and someone when people start making me laugh, I have
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: to sit up. I'll sit up. And you made me
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: sit up, and then you made me stand up Michelle
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: because I was laughing, and so so first of all,
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: let me let me lay it out. Everybody know about Michelle.
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: See when when you're really talented comic and she knows this,
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: you hit terms hit you. If you said to a
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: normal street person, they might be offended. They be offended
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: by but stuff like you silly, you're stupid, you're you crazy.
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: You ought to control your food. See if a statup comic,
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: who's a real standup comic. Here's those famous they know
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: they kicking, But you're funny, you ought to control You're crazy?
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: Thank you. I appreciate that. I really really do, and
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: honestly like, and you know this better than like anybody,
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: especially since you've been in the game for so long.
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: There's always this thing where people don't think women are funny.
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: It's just like okay, and it's sort of like what
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: I was growing up, and I was the only black
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: kid in um a few of the schools I went to.
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: My dad was like, you have to be the best
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: because you're gonna stand out whether you want it or not.
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: And so start stand up in two thousand one. For
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: the first five or six years, everywhere I went, I
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: was like the only female on a show, and it's
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: just like, you have to be the best. And so
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: I remember Will sylvinsa hilariousation American comedian in New York,
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: was like, you know, it doesn't matter what spot you
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: get on the show. A lot of people like the
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: third spot the force by everyone has their favorite to
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: go first. He's like, doesn't matter, take any spot and
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: make it hard for someone to follow you. So I
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: was like, bet, and those are the lessons that I
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: think we need as comedians or anybody. Like walking into
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: a room or like a zoom meeting, or like pitch
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: and stuff. It's like the question isn't how do I
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: become popular? How do I get more followers? How do
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: I make money? It's like, if you are talented, the
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: money will follow. Well, you know agree, because in this
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: business we can't get caught up in the slot in
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: the show. Well, first of all, if you can't handle
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: the slot, that slot when we your yeah, because everybody
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: in the stand a comedy game is gunning for the
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: funny person. And then you're an attractive woman, Michelle so
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: and I can say this a lot of times people
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: will be kind of condescending. Oh he's just getting because
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: she's cute, or she last because she's a woman. So
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: how did you overcome those negatives? Well that's the thing too,
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: write like I worked all the circuits. I worked, um,
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: you know, the clubs with like my wife and kids,
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: sitcom suit, I did the Chilling circuit, I did the
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: gay clubs, and everyone's just like it's a woman, or
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: well she's like what she gotta say about this experience?
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: Or she cute? How funny can she be? And that's
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: the thing that going by what my dad said, you know,
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: he also said, never worked for a thank you, So
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: I said, okay, I'm not gonna work for a thank you.
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: I'm just to leava you're welcome, and so all that
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: should decided. It doesn't matter how you look, it's it's
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: what is inside. And so I know that I have
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: a story in my heart that you won't enjoy, either
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: you're on board or or not. So yeah, I mean,
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: I just want to make it. I just want to
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: make it so hard. I just want to tickle people.
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: Like you know how you always focus on the one
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: person that's not laughing. I'm like, I'm here for that person,
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I don't focus on that idiot.
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: I really don't. You're not gonna bring down my vibe
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: because but you're right, you can understand the comment is
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: interesting because you can control the side of the room,
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: you can full the middle, and it's beautiful when you
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: control the entire room. Yes and so, And the goal
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: is really the control in any percent of the room,
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: because you're not gonna make everybody laugh. That's just life.
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: You don't know what's wrong with that person. They might
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: be having a bad day, robed car might not start.
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: They know when they go outside. Yeah, yea, you never know.
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: And that's really important listen to. That we all have
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: to know is that you never know what someone's going through.
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: I mean, you know what happened with Chadwick. I'm just
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: like you guys. We have to be nicer to each
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: other on the internet. Don't come for someone's looks. You
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: do not know what we are going through. So that's
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: what I really try to hopefully I did with the
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: Special two was yeah, it could be funny, Yeah I
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: got stories. Yeah I'm going through ship. But at the
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: end of the day, we have to be kind to
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: each other. Otherwise it's all for not well. I agree,
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: And she's saying Chadwick Boseman, that's who she's referencing, and
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: just in somebody's under a rock. Don't know who who
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: you're talking about, but a rock fell on their head. Okay,
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: now let's say let's talk about your standard special. There's
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: on Netflix, uh start September twenty night. UM. Why, First
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: of all, one of the Pikes, one of my all
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: time favorite people. She's one of the EPs on her
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: production company. Tell us about that. Yes, So Wanda owns
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: Push the Productions, UM, and she's partners with Paige Horowitz,
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: who was an amazing producer who did um last Comic
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: Standing all the years she did. Tiffany has his special
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: fortune Feamsters, and so they're just like a dynamic do
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: of just female empowerment who have been in the game
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: long enough to know how to set you up. Um well.
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: And you know, I've already been a fan, such a
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: fan of Wanda for so long because not only is
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: she funny, she's so smart, she's so intelligent, she's so thoughtful.
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: So those are the people I want to work with.
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: And I felt like I was in a really good company,
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: which is great because an hour you are leaving yourself
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: vulnerable to a lot of things and sometimes overwhelming, much
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: like buying your first car, getting married, people sometimes praying
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: your vulnerabilities, and just like, you should do this because
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: a lot of people do this. You should do that.
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: You should get this venue because this is what they do.
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: And it's like, no, man, these two women were like,
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: what do you want? What? How are we going to
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: showcase your personality? What is a night out for you?
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: And it's really nice working with people who understand you
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: and celebrate you, not tolerate you. And that's important that
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: you say that. I wanted to talk about the specially
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: a little bit more detailed because of your use your
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: ability to wait for the moment, await, to allow that
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: moment to build. You know, the value of your facial expressions,
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: the look, the cutting of the eye, that the sneaky grin,
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: you know, which makes you wonderful actress too. I can't act.
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: That's why that's a blessing, as a blessing about that
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: ability to wait for the moment. Man, I think that
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: just comes with time. You know, you don't know that.
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: You don't know you can do that until you've tested
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: and tried, test and try. You could do it in
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: front of your first gig for two thousand, you could
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: do it at that bar show for ten people. You know.
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: I think comedy especially, you know, we get stuck in
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: the script and it's just like if there's a side
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: of you that wants to color outside the box, trust it.
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: It's not gonna work the first time. But nobody plays
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: show pan the first time they played piano. You gotta
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: keep away and figure it out. So I feel like
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: that definitely comes with time. And also, you know, comedy,
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: being a woman in her forties, like all this stuff
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: is like I am tired of trying to fit in
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: someone else's world, Like, come to mind, this is my world, Utopia.
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: You want to celebrate great, you don't, There's something else
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: for you on Netflix. There's a lot of ship Go
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: watch the Traveler Show. Welcome to Potopia. I can I
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: can only follow that time. What you just say? Give
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: me a wrap up here, and I want to wrap
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: up on a hot note with you. Welcome to Patopia.
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: September twenty night, Netflix strowing the incredible Michelle. Michelle, I'm
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: gonna tell you when they when they told me that
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: you had a comedy special, I went, who When I said,
- 1:52:46Speaker 1: not a negative? I didn't know you did stand up? Yeah,
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. So so I went, who
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: are you talking about? You know? First last first? So
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: with success can kind of like high what got you there? Yeah?
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: It's crazy and it's crazy. Also what people know you for?
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: What they don't? Right? Right? And so to see you
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: doing stand up and I won't give anybody any secret. Way,
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: please watch the opening, Please watch them. But I say, stupid, silly, goofy, goofy, goofy,
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: goofy and silly the same thing. So she double five,
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: double five, double five. But it's a great special, Michelle.
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: I want to just thank you, welcome to allowing me
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: to see you as a stand up being a guy.
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: You know, I've done def jam BT, I've done all
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: the comedy special I walked away, and I've had a
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: successful careers and producer, writer and manager. And to see
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: a fresh face like yours come on a comedy scene.
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: I've been fortunate to interview my man George Lopez when
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: his special air on Netflix. And is a great run
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: of new, fresh female talent, tasing yourself in this pandemic
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: year of one of them. Congratulations, thank you for Shanna.
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: Was so nice to meet you. I hope to see
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: you again. You a zoomer in person with a mask
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: who knows when you come down. Make sure you people
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: let me know. Okay, I got a big, more beautiful office.
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: Love to bring you by. We're talking live in my studio. Perfect.
