- 1:20Speaker 1: how many pages that you've been in this book? Because
- 1:23Speaker 1: I've read this book, because it's very engaging. My next

- 1:51Speaker 1: The incredible doctor Jennifer Lewis go, hey, Jennifer, you're not
- 2:00Speaker 1: gonna throw out that doctor or you do it. See.
- 2:04Speaker 1: See that's when you read the book. See that's when
- 2:06Speaker 1: you read the Yeah, that's when you're an honorary doctor
- 2:12Speaker 1: degree from my alma mater, Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri.
- 2:16Speaker 1: And it was just a wonderful, wonderful commencement. I was
- 2:20Speaker 1: the speaker that year. I was very excited. I was
- 2:23Speaker 1: in the middle of getting an um and what was
- 2:27Speaker 1: the other thing, a lifetime achieved from the American Black
- 2:31Speaker 1: Film So. Yeah, So I am Dr Jennifer Lewis. I'm
- 2:38Speaker 1: waiting for someone to say, is there a doctor in
- 2:41Speaker 1: to say? Right here? Baby, what's the problem I do?
- 2:45Speaker 1: I said, you know what, I said, I'm gonna hear
- 2:46Speaker 1: it with the doctor early. Yeah, I said, if he's cute,
- 2:50Speaker 1: I'll give it to you too much? You too much?
- 2:54Speaker 1: You know the great thing about your energy. Here's the
- 2:56Speaker 1: funny thing about our relationship. Okay you could. You've done
- 3:00Speaker 1: four projects that I've been a social TV projects and
- 3:02Speaker 1: film projects, and we've never really ever met. In nteen
- 3:06Speaker 1: uh eight, you taped an episode of of The Parenthood.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I was an executive story editor with Robert Town There
- 3:15Speaker 1: You Go. And then in ninety nine I was co
- 3:17Speaker 1: executive produced of Jamie Foxx Show and You Take Them,
- 3:22Speaker 1: And then most recently you did two of my movies,
- 3:26Speaker 1: Think like a Man, Well you and Thinking Like a
- 3:29Speaker 1: Man too. I was executive and I didn't even meet you. Well,
- 3:34Speaker 1: why didn't you come and introduce yourself? You know something
- 3:36Speaker 1: I'm gonna I stayed were in the back. I stayed
- 3:39Speaker 1: were in the back. And and you know and that
- 3:45Speaker 1: you know when when when you say three hundred featured
- 3:48Speaker 1: films and TV show, I got four of them. So
- 3:50Speaker 1: I know your body of work, and I know it's
- 3:53Speaker 1: amazing the gifts that you bring to the table. But
- 3:56Speaker 1: it was really interesting when I was reading the book
- 3:58Speaker 1: of the book is called It's The Man Walk the
- 4:00Speaker 1: Mother of Black Hollywood, which is your story. You were
- 4:04Speaker 1: talking about getting nervous. And one of my good friends
- 4:06Speaker 1: that you had a love interest and Think Like a
- 4:09Speaker 1: Man was j Anthony Brown, comedian Janathany Brown. I love
- 4:13Speaker 1: me from J Come on now, and that he would
- 4:16Speaker 1: always get amazingly nervous. And you discussed that when you
- 4:20Speaker 1: were about to deliver your speech for your for your
- 4:23Speaker 1: honorary at your alma model, Western University, how nervous you
- 4:27Speaker 1: got because you just wanted to be so good and
- 4:29Speaker 1: you wanted to deliver the you you know when you
- 4:34Speaker 1: are delivering a commencement speech, it has to be the
- 4:40Speaker 1: most important wow moments. You're sending these young children off
- 4:48Speaker 1: into the world. What a responsibility. And I have to
- 4:52Speaker 1: tell you I was honored when the president of West University,
- 4:56Speaker 1: doctor Elizabeth Scrolls, called me and that asked me to
- 5:00Speaker 1: be the commencement speaker. I did. I said, could you
- 5:04Speaker 1: give me a moment and I'll call you back. And
- 5:07Speaker 1: I said, I remember I had made a fire in
- 5:11Speaker 1: my fireplace that day because I was reading when she
- 5:13Speaker 1: called by the fire. It sounds romantic, but it was
- 5:17Speaker 1: just me. But anyway, but used to say, well that
- 5:21Speaker 1: night anyway. But anyway, look listen, I cried. I sat
- 5:26Speaker 1: there and I knew it was like one of those
- 5:33Speaker 1: moments where you know that if you pass away, your
- 5:39Speaker 1: life was not in vain. It's just it's just that
- 5:42Speaker 1: moment was said, my god, I I did something that's
- 5:49Speaker 1: a big moment. That's a big moment. And I just
- 5:57Speaker 1: was honored. And I'm telling you, I wrote a speech, baby,
- 6:01Speaker 1: I wrote a speech for those kids. I told him,
- 6:04Speaker 1: I said, the elevator to success is broken. Take the stairs. Wow.
- 6:11Speaker 1: And you sang to him too, and your eyes on
- 6:15Speaker 1: the sparrows. Absolutely, But the thing about it was that
- 6:18Speaker 1: you just delivered the message. The thing I liked about
- 6:21Speaker 1: I wanted to bring that up because the fact that
- 6:23Speaker 1: you know, I graduated from University of Houston. One of
- 6:26Speaker 1: my bucket list is I get that call to speak
- 6:29Speaker 1: to the graduation. You know, that's one of my bucket lists.
- 6:34Speaker 1: So so I had to bring that. I had to
- 6:36Speaker 1: give you that, Doctor Jennifer Lewis love the first time that,
- 6:41Speaker 1: ladies and gentlemen, I give you Dr Jennifer Lewis. I
- 6:45Speaker 1: was like that. So it's just it rang true? Did
- 6:53Speaker 1: it true that that I had to rise, that I
- 6:58Speaker 1: had gone full So a little country girl from Missouri,
- 7:02Speaker 1: that little yeah, from that little freshman on the first
- 7:06Speaker 1: day of college and here I was back back, you know,
- 7:11Speaker 1: And that's big and that's what popular. Absolutely, Absolutely, let's
- 7:17Speaker 1: talk to the about that. That's that's one of the
- 7:18Speaker 1: things of the book. One of the things that stood
- 7:20Speaker 1: out in the book. You said this, the Mother of
- 7:22Speaker 1: Black Hollywood is not a Hollywood tell hall, but a
- 7:25Speaker 1: life tell all. That's right. I don't go in for
- 7:28Speaker 1: all of that goss, that negativity and who's doing who
- 7:33Speaker 1: and all of that stuff. Oh honey, that's such a
- 7:36Speaker 1: waste of life. And you know there's that line in
- 7:40Speaker 1: my book. I made sure it would want on one
- 7:44Speaker 1: line by itself. I don't want any more words around it.
- 7:49Speaker 1: People love the gossip. I don't. It's painful. We waste
- 7:57Speaker 1: so much energy concerned what other people are doing. Such
- 8:02Speaker 1: a waste of life and attention to you. And and
- 8:06Speaker 1: here's the bottom lines. It has to be in you
- 8:11Speaker 1: to see it in them. M hm. So what are
- 8:14Speaker 1: you talking about? It's really interesting, you know. I always
- 8:17Speaker 1: tell people, if you want to know who you are,
- 8:19Speaker 1: you want to read your life story, read your comments,
- 8:23Speaker 1: but you put on the one to know that's your
- 8:25Speaker 1: life story. Mm. So you're sitting there talking about people
- 8:30Speaker 1: and trolling and carrying on. That's who you are. And
- 8:35Speaker 1: and nobody's looking in the mirror when you're brushing your teeth.
- 8:38Speaker 1: But you you know what you have to offer the world.
- 8:41Speaker 1: You know how you look, You know what was looking
- 8:43Speaker 1: back at you. You know if the tee that's what
- 8:46Speaker 1: I'm talking about. That what Michael Jackson said, that man
- 8:49Speaker 1: in the book. Now when you when when I when
- 8:51Speaker 1: I'm reading this book, which is really a journey, a
- 8:55Speaker 1: life journey for when you you know, and it was
- 8:58Speaker 1: its highly charged, uh, the sexual journey. It's certain certain
- 9:03Speaker 1: chapters in the well. I was bipolar. I want to
- 9:06Speaker 1: talk about it, and I want yeah. When I arrived
- 9:09Speaker 1: in New York City. Um, sometimes mental illness will hit
- 9:13Speaker 1: you somewhere around the teams where you'll you'll really discover
- 9:18Speaker 1: that something is not right, something is off here. And
- 9:23Speaker 1: one of the things that happens, you know, two things
- 9:26Speaker 1: will change as human being, will be are sure to
- 9:31Speaker 1: change as human being, and one is a life threatening disease.
- 9:35Speaker 1: The other is you just gotta get You get sick
- 9:38Speaker 1: and tired of being sick and tired. You just get
- 9:42Speaker 1: tired and you say enough and you change. And I
- 9:47Speaker 1: wanted to do well. I wanted on my face the
- 9:52Speaker 1: smile that I put on everybody else's face. I wanted
- 9:55Speaker 1: to be happy. But bipolar disorder is the telling. It's
- 10:02Speaker 1: the extreme of manic behavior. Rage, um, you know, speeding,
- 10:09Speaker 1: walking fast, talking fast. These are examples of being manic
- 10:16Speaker 1: or mania. Describing mania. When you're um, that cousin that's
- 10:21Speaker 1: on top of the picnic table at the reunion, pulling
- 10:24Speaker 1: down its hands, that that sister that stays locked up
- 10:28Speaker 1: in the basement and never comes out, that friend that
- 10:32Speaker 1: will disappear for two weeks and not uh communicate. You
- 10:36Speaker 1: have to keep an eye on people who locked themselves
- 10:40Speaker 1: up in rooms and stay in the dark and eat
- 10:42Speaker 1: themselves to death and drink themselves and that these are
- 10:46Speaker 1: these are the symptoms of mental illness. People running away
- 10:51Speaker 1: from life, you know. And that's one of the that's
- 10:53Speaker 1: one of the great charges that you want to get
- 10:55Speaker 1: out and telling this story, you know, because of the
- 10:58Speaker 1: cosolutely let go of that digma of mental illness. You
- 11:02Speaker 1: have to reach out and help your relatives and your
- 11:05Speaker 1: friends and yourself. Let's talk about the self, talk about
- 11:10Speaker 1: looking in the mirror. I did a signing at Facebook
- 11:15Speaker 1: on the Compound in Silicon Valley two days ago, and
- 11:19Speaker 1: the young man interviewing me admitted for the first time
- 11:23Speaker 1: that he suffers with depression. Um. What I'm finding as
- 11:27Speaker 1: I'm traveling around the United States on this book tour
- 11:31Speaker 1: is so many people, you know, because I played the
- 11:35Speaker 1: mother and the aunt on television and these many roles
- 11:39Speaker 1: that I played, people have a special connection with me.
- 11:43Speaker 1: I'm finding that it's like they see me as their
- 11:46Speaker 1: auntie and their mother, and they are able to express
- 11:50Speaker 1: themselves to me a lot. I didn't expect this kind
- 11:54Speaker 1: of reception. I don't know what that's as you can
- 11:58Speaker 1: see the direction I wanted to take this. But because
- 12:00Speaker 1: we're gonna be right back to talk about more of
- 12:02Speaker 1: with Jennifer Lewes, the real mother Black Hollywood, the AUNTI,
- 12:08Speaker 1: your cousin, and your sister. She was all those people,
- 12:10Speaker 1: and I read this book. We were right back with
- 12:12Speaker 1: more Jennifer. You know now we know each other now,
- 12:16Speaker 1: so I can you know we're good. We're right back
- 12:19Speaker 1: with more Jennifer Lewish just for Sean McDonald, the host
- 12:22Speaker 1: of Money Making Conversations. She's still here. I still got
- 12:25Speaker 1: online Jennifer Lewis. I've worked with her, you know, I've
- 12:29Speaker 1: seen her work on four of my projects over the year,
- 12:32Speaker 1: and she's amazing. Over three hundred, over three hundred TIM
- 12:37Speaker 1: films and TV. She was on the Coach stars of
- 12:40Speaker 1: the hit ABC sitcom black Ish Coming Back. We were
- 12:44Speaker 1: just talking about bipolar was talking about one and let
- 12:46Speaker 1: everybody know a clear definition. People were bipolar dis order
- 12:50Speaker 1: typically self medicate with gambling, food, drugs, alcohol, even overspending.
- 12:57Speaker 1: And the great thing about when I was reading your book,
- 12:59Speaker 1: you said, once you control, can control your bipolar and
- 13:02Speaker 1: help you win in Hollywood. Absolutely well, when first of all,
- 13:08Speaker 1: when you're creating a character in movie, film or theater,
- 13:13Speaker 1: you have to know who you are in order to
- 13:15Speaker 1: create somebody else. So here's the thing. I knew I
- 13:20Speaker 1: needed to go and get help. I knew that something
- 13:23Speaker 1: was wrong. And when I made the decision, when I
- 13:26Speaker 1: listened to a good friend who said, something's going on,
- 13:31Speaker 1: I want to go help UM. And I stayed in
- 13:36Speaker 1: therapy and eventually I UM got on medication because it
- 13:42Speaker 1: helped me to level myself so that I could um
- 13:48Speaker 1: balance my life and um enjoy my success instead of
- 13:55Speaker 1: being depressed all the time or in a manic state
- 13:59Speaker 1: all the time. Bipolar disorder is a dangerous mental illness.
- 14:04Speaker 1: It is a dangerous disease because it is a chemical
- 14:08Speaker 1: imbalance in the brain. And ladies and gentlemen, listen to
- 14:11Speaker 1: me very carefully, there is no shame in mental illness.
- 14:18Speaker 1: We have to get away from that stigma. And I'm
- 14:21Speaker 1: also very proud of the churches that are now offering
- 14:26Speaker 1: counseling to their congregation I am very pleased that mental
- 14:34Speaker 1: illness it's coming to the four of leading thought right
- 14:38Speaker 1: now in the world. People are really gathering around um
- 14:45Speaker 1: this issue and they are confronting it head on. And
- 14:51Speaker 1: I am a spokesman noun for mental illness. They're proud
- 14:54Speaker 1: of it, and I just want everybody to know that
- 14:57Speaker 1: you can live a good life with it, right, because
- 15:01Speaker 1: you're showing that. You're showing that, And that is the
- 15:07Speaker 1: only reason I had a right two right the mother
- 15:12Speaker 1: of Black Hollywood. Yes, I suffered this, I suffered that,
- 15:17Speaker 1: but I came through the fire. I came through the fire,
- 15:21Speaker 1: and so can you. But you have to look in
- 15:24Speaker 1: the mirror and address your issues. That's the first step.
- 15:30Speaker 1: It's not what's wrong, it's mostly what happened. You know,
- 15:35Speaker 1: when you have a career, when you have a career
- 15:38Speaker 1: as amazing as your career, you know, in in theater
- 15:43Speaker 1: in Hollywood, because you know you said your your first husband,
- 15:47Speaker 1: your only husband, really with New York City, because your
- 15:50Speaker 1: love from New York City. And then you then you
- 15:53Speaker 1: moved to l A and found even greater love of success.
- 15:55Speaker 1: You toward all his country, to all of his all
- 15:57Speaker 1: of his world, really doing different plays, the events like that.
- 16:01Speaker 1: But the AIDS absolutely I really affected. You tell us
- 16:07Speaker 1: about that, wellipment, yes, yes, yes, I had so many
- 16:14Speaker 1: friends and associates that passed away from AIDS at the
- 16:18Speaker 1: height of the plague. We called it the plague. It
- 16:22Speaker 1: to me, it was a silent war that was never declared.
- 16:27Speaker 1: And after so many deaths and my father passing from
- 16:31Speaker 1: a massive heart attack, Um, I just I had a
- 16:35Speaker 1: nervous breakdown and I just that was just so much death.
- 16:40Speaker 1: It just came friend after friend after friend. You know,
- 16:43Speaker 1: makeup artists, my backup singers, my pianist, my my writers, my,
- 16:49Speaker 1: oh my god, they I'm telling you, they dropped like fly.
- 16:54Speaker 1: And we were so young. We did not know how
- 16:57Speaker 1: to handle this kind of on slot of death. And
- 17:03Speaker 1: I had a mental break And that was when a
- 17:06Speaker 1: good friend took my hand and said, come on, Jennifer,
- 17:09Speaker 1: you need help. And I resisted. Of course I resist.
- 17:13Speaker 1: We all resist. Uh. Nobody wants to know that something
- 17:18Speaker 1: could possibly be wrong with me. It's not what's wrong,
- 17:22Speaker 1: it's what can we make better? What can we How
- 17:26Speaker 1: can we make your life more balanced so that you
- 17:30Speaker 1: can live a good life, so that you can function
- 17:34Speaker 1: in this world, And I say to people, the world
- 17:38Speaker 1: is beautiful, such a beautiful, beautiful planet. You want to
- 17:44Speaker 1: have a great experience here, You want to And I'm
- 17:47Speaker 1: starting to use a phrase that I never thought I
- 17:50Speaker 1: would use, the pursuit of happiness. We have a right
- 18:00Speaker 1: to that and what every takes. And people say, Jennifer, well,
- 18:06Speaker 1: how do I know? How do I find my passion?
- 18:09Speaker 1: You find your passion? It's really kind of easy. What
- 18:15Speaker 1: makes you laugh? What makes you smile? What makes yourselves dance?
- 18:23Speaker 1: What makes you what makes you dance in the Morning's
- 18:28Speaker 1: absolutely and need do me a favor. Lead when you're
- 18:33Speaker 1: living your day to day life. If you wanted to
- 18:38Speaker 1: go as smooth as it possibly can, do this one thing.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Need with love. If you're going into a meeting, deed
- 18:53Speaker 1: with love. If you're going shopping, lead with love. If
- 18:56Speaker 1: you're getting in your car, lead with love. Just respect
- 19:02Speaker 1: that the people on the road. You know how I
- 19:04Speaker 1: stopped road rage. A good friend of mine was in
- 19:10Speaker 1: the passenger seat and somebody cut me on for somepany.
- 19:14Speaker 1: This is when I first got to l A. Mybody
- 19:17Speaker 1: cutting me off. They still cutting people off. They still
- 19:20Speaker 1: cutting people off in l A. You know, you cut
- 19:22Speaker 1: them out in the car and my girlfriend I flipped
- 19:25Speaker 1: them off and I was like yes, And you know
- 19:28Speaker 1: what my girlfriend said to me, she said, Jennifer, I
- 19:33Speaker 1: was like, you saw that son? I said that. She said,
- 19:37Speaker 1: what is just? What is that person's mother just passed
- 19:43Speaker 1: away and they're driving a little shake. I was like,
- 19:48Speaker 1: oh my god, I never really thought about that other
- 19:53Speaker 1: person in the car. That's another person in that car
- 19:57Speaker 1: with feelings and a life just like you. So that
- 20:01Speaker 1: stopped last. And if we use that in everything, you know,
- 20:05Speaker 1: if a person is having a problem, don't be going
- 20:07Speaker 1: around to about what's wrong. Ask yourself what could have
- 20:12Speaker 1: happened to that person that they're acting like that? And
- 20:14Speaker 1: it'll make you feel more compassionate. Hey, jennif I want
- 20:17Speaker 1: to talk about I want to make sure people know
- 20:19Speaker 1: that you have a book tour coming up. Uh and
- 20:21Speaker 1: they can see you live, they can touch you, take
- 20:23Speaker 1: photos with you. That's right, that's coming out South Florida. Okay,
- 20:30Speaker 1: Go'll be down there doing your thing on April twelve
- 20:33Speaker 1: and April thirteen. So go to the website, go to
- 20:36Speaker 1: follow her on social media. You know, Jennifer lewis for real.
- 20:42Speaker 1: You understand. I'm selling you. I'm selling I know your story. Now.
- 20:45Speaker 1: I don't know where else you've been interviewing with you
- 20:47Speaker 1: know what. You read the post, You've got the questions.
- 20:52Speaker 1: I am loving this interview. And that's just then on
- 20:56Speaker 1: April fifteen, you know, and then you're gonna be in Chicago,
- 21:00Speaker 1: my favorite city, when my favorite fit city is, You're
- 21:01Speaker 1: gonna be up there, speak sister speak fled Michigan, Detroit, Michigan.
- 21:06Speaker 1: But before we go, it was a couple of pictures
- 21:09Speaker 1: in the book. I know Miguel, you know, he was
- 21:11Speaker 1: important in your life, and Quentin Quinn quin quitman Equipment,
- 21:15Speaker 1: Equipment in your life. But I did not see a
- 21:17Speaker 1: picture of your man Thomas and your man Terrence. Why
- 21:21Speaker 1: do I not see any photos of those two in
