- 0:00Luke, chapter 1. Inasmuch as many have undertaken
- 0:03to compile an account of the things accomplished among us,
- 0:06just as they were handed down to us by those who from the
- 0:09beginning were eyewitnesses, servants of the word, it seemed
- 0:12fitting for me as well, having investigated everything
- 0:15carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in
- 0:17consecutive order. Most excellent, Theophilus, so
- 0:20that you may know the exact truth about the things you have
- 0:23been taught. In the days of Herod, king of
- 0:25Judea, there was a priest named Zacharias of the division of
- 0:29Abijah, and he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her
- 0:33name was Elizabeth. They were both righteous in the
- 0:35sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the
- 0:38commandments and requirements of the Lord, but they had no child
- 0:41because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in
- 0:44years. Now it happened that while he
- 0:46was performing his priestly service before God in the
- 0:49appointed order of his division, according to the custom of the
- 0:52priestly office, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of
- 0:56the Lord and burn incense. And the whole multitude of the
- 0:59people were in prayer outside at the hour of the incense
- 1:02offering, and an Angel of the Lord appeared to him standing to
- 1:06the right of the altar of incense.
- 1:08Zacharias was troubled when he saw the Angel, and fear gripped
- 1:11him. But the Angel said to him, Do
- 1:13not be afraid, Zacharias, for your petition has been heard,
- 1:17and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will
- 1:20give him the name John. You will have joy and gladness,
- 1:24and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great in
- 1:27the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine or liquor,
- 1:30and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his
- 1:33mother's womb, and he will turn many of the sons of Israel back
- 1:36to the Lord their God. It is he who will go as a
- 1:38forerunner before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to
- 1:42turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the
- 1:44disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make
- 1:47ready a people prepared for the Lord.
- 1:50Zacharias said to the Angel, How will I know this for certain?
- 1:53For I am an old man, and my wife has advanced in years.
- 1:57The Angel answered and said to him, I am Gabriel, who stands in
- 2:00the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to
- 2:03bring you this good news. And behold, you shall be silent
- 2:06and unable to speak until the day when these things take
- 2:09place, because you did not believe my words, which will be
- 2:12fulfilled in their proper time. The people were waiting for
- 2:15Zacharias were wondering at his delay in the temple, but when he
- 2:19came out he was unable to speak to them, and they realized that
- 2:22he had seen a vision in the temple, and he kept making signs
- 2:25to them and remained mute. When the days of his priestly
- 2:28service were ended, he went back home.
- 2:31After these things, Elizabeth, his wife, became pregnant, and
- 2:34she kept herself in seclusion for five months, saying, This is
- 2:37the way the Lord has dealt with me in the days when he looked
- 2:39with favor upon me to take away my disgrace among men.
- 2:43Now in the sixth month the Angel Gabriel was sent from God to a
- 2:46city in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man
- 2:50whose name was Joseph of the descendants of David.
- 2:53And the virgin's name was Mary. And coming in, he said to her,
- 2:56Greetings favoured one, the Lord is with you.
- 3:00But she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept
- 3:02pondering what kind of salutation this was.
- 3:05The Angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found
- 3:08favour with God, and behold, you will conceive in your womb, and
- 3:11bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.
- 3:14He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High.
- 3:18And the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,
- 3:21and he will reign over the House of Jacob Forever, and his
- 3:24Kingdom will have no end. Mary said to the Angel, How can
- 3:28this be since I am a virgin? The Angel answered and said to
- 3:31her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the
- 3:35Most High will over shadow you. And for that reason the holy
- 3:38Child shall be called the Son of God.
- 3:40And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a
- 3:43son in her old age, and she who was called Baron is now in her
- 3:466th month. For nothing will be impossible
- 3:49with God. And Mary said, Behold, the bond
- 3:52slave of the Lord, may it be done to me according to your
- 3:55word. And the Angel departed from her.
- 3:58Now at this time Mary arose and went in a hurry to the Hill
- 4:01Country, to a city of Judah, and entered the House of Zacharias
- 4:04and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's
- 4:07greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled
- 4:10with the Holy Spirit. And she cried out with a loud
- 4:13voice and said, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the
- 4:16fruit of your womb. And how has it happened to me
- 4:19that the mother of my Lord would come to me?
- 4:22For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears,
- 4:25the baby leaped in my womb for joy.
- 4:27And blessed is she who believed that there would be a
- 4:29fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.
- 4:33And Mary said, My soul exalts the Lord, and my spirit has
- 4:37rejoiced in God my Saviour, for he has had regard for the humble
- 4:41state of his bond Slave. For behold, from this time on,
- 4:44all generations will count me blessed.
- 4:46For the mighty One has done great things for me.
- 4:49And holy is His name, and His mercy is upon generation after
- 4:53generation toward those who fear Him.
- 4:55He has done mighty deeds with His arm.
- 4:57He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their
- 5:00heart. He has brought down rulers from
- 5:02their Thrones and has exalted those who were humble.
- 5:05He has filled the hungry with good things and sent away the
- 5:07rich empty handed. He has given help to Israel his
- 5:10servant, in remembrance of His mercy, as he spoke to our
- 5:14fathers, to Abraham and his descendants forever.
- 5:17And Mary stayed with her about 3 months and then returned to her
- 5:20home. Now the time had come for
- 5:22Elizabeth to give birth, and she gave birth to a son.
- 5:26Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had
- 5:28displayed His great mercy toward her, and they were rejoicing
- 5:31with her. And it happened that on the 8th
- 5:34day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to
- 5:37call him Zacharias after his father.
- 5:40But his mother answered and said, No indeed, but he shall be
- 5:43called John. And they said to her, There is
- 5:45no one among your relatives who is called by that name.
- 5:48And they made signs to his father as to what he wanted him
- 5:51called. And he asked for a tablet, and
- 5:53wrote as follows. His name is John.
- 5:56And they were all astonished. And at once his mouth was open
- 6:00and his tongue loosed, and he began to speak in praise of God.
- 6:04Fear came on all those living around them, and all these
- 6:07matters were being talked about in all the Hill Country of
- 6:09Judea. All who heard them kept them in
- 6:12mind, saying, What then will this child turn out to be?
- 6:15For the hand of the Lord was certainly with him, and his
- 6:19father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied,
- 6:21saying, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel.
- 6:24For He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His
- 6:27people, and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the House
- 6:31of David His servant, as He spoke by the mouth of His holy
- 6:34prophets from of old salvation from our enemies and from the
- 6:37hand of all who hate us. To show mercy toward our fathers
- 6:41and to remember His holy covenant, the oath which He
- 6:44swore to Abraham our Father, to grant us that we, being rescued
- 6:47from the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear, in
- 6:50holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.
- 6:53And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High.
- 6:57For you will go on before the Lord to prepare His ways to give
- 7:00to His people the knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of
- 7:04their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, with
- 7:07which the sunrise from on high will visit us to shine upon
- 7:11those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide
- 7:14our feet into the way of peace. And the child continued to grow
- 7:18and to become strong in spirit, and he lived in the deserts
- 7:21until the day of his public appearance to Israel.
