- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In Luke chapter 17, as Jesus
- 0:45enters a village on the way to Jerusalem, he meets 10 men with
- 0:48leprosy. These men are described as
- 0:50standing at a distance, and that would have been the reality of
- 0:53their whole lives. They would have been outcast,
- 0:56visibly identifiable as ones who didn't belong, ones that should
- 1:00be avoided. Listen to their cry to Jesus.
- 1:04Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. Jesus does indeed show mercy on
- 1:08them and heals them. He tells them to go and show
- 1:11themselves to the priest, to be confirmed by the priest as
- 1:15having been healed, the requirement for them to be able
- 1:17to reintegrate into society. And as they go to the priest,
- 1:21they realize that they have indeed been healed.
- 1:24Their leprosy is gone. Now here's where the story gets
- 1:28interesting. One of the 10, when he realizes
- 1:32that he has been healed, turns around and goes back to Jesus.
- 1:36He begins glorifying God with a loud voice, shouting audible
- 1:40praises to the Lord. When he meets Jesus again, he
- 1:43falls at his feet and gives thanks to him.
- 1:47And the text makes clear that this man, this one who showed
- 1:50thankfulness out of the 10 who were healed, is a Samaritan.
- 1:54Jesus says to him, were there not ten cleansed, but the 9?
- 1:58Where are they? Was no one found who returned to
- 2:01give glory to God except this foreigner?
- 2:0510 were healed, one gave thanks, ten were cleansed, one returned
- 2:10to glorify God. Thankfulness is not the pattern
- 2:14of this world. Thankfulness is not the norm.
- 2:18But here we see that Jesus links this thankfulness.
- 2:20The leper offers for his healing directly with giving glory to
- 2:25God. When we're thankful to God, who
- 2:28provides and heals and blesses and forgives and loves and shows
- 2:32mercy, we are glorifying God. When we lack in thankfulness, we
- 2:38demonstrate both a lack of giving God glory and ultimately
- 2:42a lack of faith on our part. The Westminster Shorter
- 2:46Catechism says the chief end of man.
- 2:48His primary purpose in this life is quote, to glorify God and to
- 2:52enjoy him forever. We were made to glorify our
- 2:56Creator. We were made to experience,
- 2:59enjoy and express the glory of God.
- 3:03And what this leper teaches us is that when we are thankful, we
- 3:07do just that. When we stop and praise the Lord
- 3:10for what he's done for us, when we consider all the ways God has
- 3:14worked on our behalf and thank him for them, then we are living
- 3:19our lives for the glory of God. So let your first response today
- 3:23be thankfulness. Do not run ahead like the other
- 3:269 lepers. Do not rush to enjoy the gift
- 3:29without first praising and thanking the giver.
- 3:32Sing with the psalmist David in Psalm One, O 3.
- 3:36Bless the Lord, O my soul and all that is within me.
- 3:39Bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and
- 3:43forget none of his benefits. Who pardons all your iniquities?
- 3:47Who heals all your diseases? Who redeems your life from the
- 3:51pit? Who crowns you with loving
- 3:53kindness and compassion? Who satisfies your years with
- 3:56good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle?
- 4:01Let thankfulness and glory to God fill your life to day.
