- 1:22Speaker 1: good morning, It's Monday morning. I'm your host, Ra Sean
- 1:26Speaker 1: McDonald and you're listening to money making Conversations. Guess what.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I'm here to tell you what it is to be successful,
- 1:33Speaker 1: because that's what I do. I feel so good today.
- 1:40Speaker 1: You know the city and the city of Houston. I'm
- 1:42Speaker 1: talking about this recovery from Hurricane Harvey. UM gave away
- 1:45Speaker 1: more donations last Thursday with a drum love to small
- 1:50Speaker 1: business that businesses that were impacted by Hurricane Harvey. We
- 1:53Speaker 1: gave one thousand dollar stipends to ten more businesses that
- 1:57Speaker 1: would have been affected. As campaign is on on and
- 2:00Speaker 1: go as to raise one hundred thousand dollars and we
- 2:03Speaker 1: will be giving out an additional money in those directions.
- 2:08Speaker 1: But what is money making conversations. Money making conversations is
- 2:11Speaker 1: to show that I hope money making conversations just to
- 2:13Speaker 1: show that I interview industry decision makers, CEO, small business
- 2:17Speaker 1: owners and celebrities and you learn the secrets to success.
- 2:21Speaker 1: That's what it's all about. A contact people bout knowing
- 2:24Speaker 1: the business. A lot of people I'm here for the
- 2:26Speaker 1: very first time I've heard of them, my talent scouts
- 2:30Speaker 1: of my booking agencies that are tied to invite these
- 2:34Speaker 1: people onto my show and have an honest conversation about
- 2:37Speaker 1: success at small businesses. But also like to hold that
- 2:41Speaker 1: thought right there, because when people hear the word small businesses,
- 2:44Speaker 1: they say, Okay, this show is not for me, and
- 2:46Speaker 1: that's absolutely, absolutely not the truth. This show is definitely
- 2:50Speaker 1: for you. This show is about giving you an opportunity
- 2:53Speaker 1: to look inside yourself. Uh you right now you see
- 2:56Speaker 1: yourself as an employed person. But the skills that I'm
- 2:58Speaker 1: talking about with marrying in any opportunity in life that
- 3:02Speaker 1: you want to be successful where you're a young student
- 3:04Speaker 1: in high school, trying to get you trying to find
- 3:07Speaker 1: your way in college and get that college degree and
- 3:09Speaker 1: get you set for what you want to do in
- 3:11Speaker 1: your life. If you're already in life marriage, single, divorce,
- 3:15Speaker 1: looking for somebody to carry your emotions to the next level,
- 3:19Speaker 1: that's what this shows about. Because I would give you
- 3:21Speaker 1: a plan, and that's all it is. The Only way
- 3:23Speaker 1: you can be successful is to have a plan and
- 3:25Speaker 1: That's what Rashan McDonald created. Ra Sean McDonald be a meat.
- 3:30Speaker 1: That's why I created Money Making Conversations to give you
- 3:32Speaker 1: that opportunity. But let's get this show started with my
- 3:35Speaker 1: very first guest. She's been a whole and I'm smiling
- 3:38Speaker 1: because this is gonna be a good time because she's successful.
- 3:41Speaker 1: My first guest is not your typical prodietrists. She's She's
- 3:45Speaker 1: a fluent, grounded entrepreneur who takes pride in empowering other women,
- 3:50Speaker 1: inspiring them to reach their best. She just happens to
- 3:52Speaker 1: be great at performing bunyan and have a toe surgery.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I know about that that I am a person who
- 3:59Speaker 1: have had. She maintain his offices on Park Avenue in
- 4:02Speaker 1: New York City as well as the Washington Metropolitan Area,
- 4:06Speaker 1: downtown Civil Spring, Maryland. Please welcome to Money Making Conversations.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Dr yor Landa Raglan. Hello, Hello, hell are you? I'm
- 4:19Speaker 1: so happy, you know, being to have you on the
- 4:22Speaker 1: call to day. I know you're on the East coast right, Yes,
- 4:25Speaker 1: I am, I am, and yes, and I'm thrilled to
- 4:27Speaker 1: be here. Now wait with city, are you here right now?
- 4:29Speaker 1: New York in the DC area, I'm in New York City.
- 4:33Speaker 1: That's where my flagship is. Although I'm originally from the
- 4:37Speaker 1: Washington metropolitan area, UM, I reside in New York City. Now, okay,
- 4:42Speaker 1: let me just before we get in all the questions,
- 4:44Speaker 1: I got two breaks with you, because we're gonna have
- 4:46Speaker 1: a nice discussion about you know what, what what drives you,
- 4:50Speaker 1: what what makes you successful? And in in the in
- 4:53Speaker 1: the field of this surgery of nature. Because I want
- 4:56Speaker 1: to give everybody the history on she and I. I've
- 5:00Speaker 1: first encountered her business when Steve and I first came
- 5:03Speaker 1: on radio in New York City. Uh w b LS.
- 5:06Speaker 1: We was the first station that we syndicated on New
- 5:09Speaker 1: York City. Steve and I me and Steve Harving. I
- 5:12Speaker 1: was living in New York City and she came on
- 5:14Speaker 1: board to advertise. This is the first time I really
- 5:17Speaker 1: heard about this. I think you're a groundbreaker when I
- 5:20Speaker 1: say that, because you said, look, I want to spread
- 5:23Speaker 1: I want to spread my business to more people and
- 5:25Speaker 1: let them know they're available. And also you had no
- 5:28Speaker 1: problem spreading it to the African American community. Correct, that's
- 5:33Speaker 1: absolutely correct, And there's a there's a real important story
- 5:36Speaker 1: behind this because yes, I was looking to do some
- 5:40Speaker 1: some advertising on what you call an out of network doctor,
- 5:44Speaker 1: which means that if you if you go to your
- 5:47Speaker 1: website and look for a doctor within your plan, I'm
- 5:49Speaker 1: not in there. And that's because I'm special and I
- 5:52Speaker 1: provide a special service. So I have to find different
- 5:56Speaker 1: avenues to reach the patients that want the services that
- 6:03Speaker 1: I provide. So so the real important story behind this
- 6:07Speaker 1: is that I went to the radio station and I said,
- 6:10Speaker 1: I want to. I want to, I want to advertise.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I definitely you know Steve Harvey, it's hot. I always
- 6:16Speaker 1: knew he was hot. Is like, I want to I
- 6:18Speaker 1: want to advertise only during his shift. That was that
- 6:21Speaker 1: was my goal. But what I did was and is
- 6:25Speaker 1: that I took it a step further. I asked the
- 6:27Speaker 1: person that was that was going to sign me up
- 6:31Speaker 1: for the for the ads um. I said, you know, sir,
- 6:35Speaker 1: anyway I can get you know, get on the show.
- 6:41Speaker 1: And it's a it's so my My whole thing is
- 6:44Speaker 1: because the way I look at it is the worst
- 6:47Speaker 1: thing that they could tell me is now right right right.
- 6:50Speaker 1: It's important for people to hear that I'm glad you're
- 6:53Speaker 1: telling the story because a lot of people stopped themselves
- 6:56Speaker 1: before ahead of time. All I can say is no.
- 7:00Speaker 1: The the worst that is so that's not philosophy. The
- 7:02Speaker 1: worst that you can say is no. I'm still going
- 7:04Speaker 1: to advertise, regardless of the yes and no answer. And
- 7:08Speaker 1: the young lady, you know, she responded, you know, she
- 7:12Speaker 1: had this beautiful, you know voice, and she said, Dr Ragland,
- 7:16Speaker 1: I think we might be able to make that happen.
- 7:20Speaker 1: And and next thing you know, I'm I'm on on
- 7:25Speaker 1: the Steve Harvey syndicated nationally radio show, which was like huge,
- 7:31Speaker 1: it was huge. And and because I just remained me
- 7:38Speaker 1: the person that I am, I don't like you said,
- 7:42Speaker 1: you introduced me perfectly. I am. I am just I'm
- 7:46Speaker 1: a regular person that I am really good at just
- 7:49Speaker 1: just I'm just so happy to be great at performing
- 7:53Speaker 1: buying in Hamwichase surgery. And so I just here's the
- 7:56Speaker 1: interesting thing I want to say about this, because that's
- 7:58Speaker 1: how she came into my life. And you know, we
- 8:01Speaker 1: got on the phone and you know, I got into coaching,
- 8:04Speaker 1: and I said, this is how Steve is gonna be.
- 8:06Speaker 1: I said, he's gonna joke around because he's gonna find
- 8:09Speaker 1: jokes and and foot surgery. He's gonna find jokes and
- 8:12Speaker 1: Hamma todes, He's gonna find jokes in bud And you
- 8:15Speaker 1: were smart enough to understand, Okay, you know, I might
- 8:18Speaker 1: allow his humor to build my brand and give me
- 8:21Speaker 1: opportunities for people to contact me. And it worked perfectly. Absolutely.
- 8:28Speaker 1: You know, It's like for some people unfortunately, I mean,
- 8:32Speaker 1: see are funny feet are just they're they're funny. I mean,
- 8:35Speaker 1: think about it. Eddie Murphy is one of the reasons
- 8:38Speaker 1: why I'm in business. His movie Boomerang, right, you know,
- 8:44Speaker 1: when he's lying in bad with the girl right right right,
- 8:47Speaker 1: right right right, and he pulls the sheets and you
- 8:50Speaker 1: see all these corns and he can't and all he
- 8:52Speaker 1: wants to do, it's just he wants to get out.
- 8:55Speaker 1: He's just like no, no, no, and you know, and
- 8:57Speaker 1: then the next day the boys are sitting around and
- 8:59Speaker 1: they're talking about it, and it was he's like, oh,
- 9:01Speaker 1: she's beautiful, and he's like, no, no, no, you should
- 9:04Speaker 1: have seen her feet. She had camera time in there.
- 9:07Speaker 1: So it is naturally it is a funny thing. And
- 9:10Speaker 1: I know it's embarrassing and it does make some it
- 9:14Speaker 1: makes people feel self conscious. But if I'm coming into
- 9:18Speaker 1: this asking, you know, Steve, to be on the Steve
- 9:21Speaker 1: Harvey Show. I have to understand that I'm going on.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I'm going on the show at a comedic level. And
- 9:28Speaker 1: and so yeah, I like that because you were not intimidating.
- 9:34Speaker 1: First of all, you weren't timid dating. It's gonna put
- 9:36Speaker 1: that out there first. And secondly, it was about your
- 9:38Speaker 1: brain and marketing your brand and taking it to an
- 9:41Speaker 1: unconventional let me use that terminology correctly, unconventional level because
- 9:46Speaker 1: you were you were willing to take a you willn't
- 9:48Speaker 1: the bet on yourself, and that's what I liked about you.
- 9:51Speaker 1: You know, you willn't the bet on yourself. Rich I've
- 9:54Speaker 1: never done this before, but I also want to protect
- 9:56Speaker 1: my brand too. Can I come on the air with
- 9:59Speaker 1: him and you know, let him do his thing. But
- 10:02Speaker 1: I'm a I'm a I'm a center. It back to
- 10:04Speaker 1: the professionalism of that what I am. I am the
- 10:06Speaker 1: real deal and you did it magnificently. I want to
- 10:09Speaker 1: tell you did it magnificently. And I wanted people to
- 10:12Speaker 1: get our story out because that's what this show is about.
- 10:15Speaker 1: It is about telling different people how you can be
- 10:17Speaker 1: successful and how you have to think out the box. Correct, Yes, yes, absolutely,
- 10:23Speaker 1: and and and thank you for recognizing that because and
- 10:26Speaker 1: and Steve Harvey recognized it because I got invited back
- 10:31Speaker 1: on again, and then and then and then I got
- 10:34Speaker 1: back to invited back again. So, UM, if you think
- 10:37Speaker 1: outside the box, sometimes sometimes people are afraid to step
- 10:43Speaker 1: outside of that. But some times people are afraid to
- 10:47Speaker 1: put on that that real inner me that they are. Um,
- 10:52Speaker 1: because you're I'm a surgeon and I'm a doctor, so
- 10:56Speaker 1: I'm supposed to be perceived a certain type of way. Um,
- 11:00Speaker 1: there you go. But but but but your patients are people,
- 11:04Speaker 1: and they're real people as long as you get as
- 11:09Speaker 1: long as you give them, as long as you treat
- 11:12Speaker 1: them with you know, give them excellent medical care. Um,
- 11:16Speaker 1: they're gonna understand that when it comes down to working
- 11:20Speaker 1: on their bodies medically, They're gonna have that confidence in you.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Regardless of the fact that you might you may have
- 11:28Speaker 1: a different hairstyle every day, or might have a personality.
- 11:31Speaker 1: How about that you might have a personal exactly, you
- 11:33Speaker 1: might have a personality outside of the realm of what
- 11:37Speaker 1: is known in I mean essentially in the medical profession. Yes, absolutely,
- 11:42Speaker 1: because even the dietrists. It's orthopedic surgeons. You know, it's
- 11:47Speaker 1: athopedic surgery. So it is what it is. And people,
- 11:51Speaker 1: you know, they perceive these doctors a certain kinds of
- 11:54Speaker 1: you can be a regular person. Now we set you up.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Now let's talk about these these feet. Now you know
- 11:59Speaker 1: these feet. First question is, yes, patients male or female?
- 12:04Speaker 1: Who's the dominant patient? Male or female? Okay, so the
- 12:09Speaker 1: dominant patients that comes in, how the cacedure done are
- 12:12Speaker 1: definitely women? Women are you know, they're coming in and
- 12:15Speaker 1: drove However, uh, and this is this is a key thing,
- 12:20Speaker 1: is that people don't look at these numbers. And this
- 12:23Speaker 1: is this is another reason why I thrived in what
- 12:27Speaker 1: I do, is that I understood early on what this
- 12:31Speaker 1: procedure and how I do it means to a specific
- 12:35Speaker 1: demographic that being African American. Left. Now, my procedure is
- 12:40Speaker 1: for everybody, and I think that very clear. You know,
- 12:43Speaker 1: I'm equal opportunity. It's for everybody. But however, African American skin,
- 12:48Speaker 1: black skin heals different and responds differently to different suture
- 12:52Speaker 1: materials than what Caucasian skin might might react to. Also,
- 12:58Speaker 1: within the African American community, feet are culturally important. The
- 13:04Speaker 1: aesthetics of what your feet looks like. So you could
- 13:06Speaker 1: be Halleberry fine walking down the street, but if you
- 13:10Speaker 1: have you could be Halleberry fine. But if you have
- 13:13Speaker 1: open soil shoes and you have porns and bunions, people
- 13:16Speaker 1: are gonna commentate. They're gonna be like, oh, she looks
- 13:19Speaker 1: like Hallieberry, She's fine. And then other ones they're like, yeah,
- 13:22Speaker 1: but did you see her feet rocks kicking up du yeah,
- 13:27Speaker 1: kicking up flower or whatever, and they do this and
- 13:30Speaker 1: and what people outside the culture don't send that this
- 13:33Speaker 1: commentary is not your goal. This is out last. Yes,
- 13:41Speaker 1: we've heard it all, right, we've heard it all So
- 13:45Speaker 1: it is different. So this particular demographic that I do
- 13:49Speaker 1: target and that that is gravitated and has an affinity
- 13:53Speaker 1: towards me, um, it's it's a cultural thing. It's a
- 13:57Speaker 1: it's a thing that people outside of the culture just
- 14:00Speaker 1: don't get and don't understanding. That's fine because I'm here,
- 14:03Speaker 1: I'm here, and I'm here for you your own money
- 14:05Speaker 1: making conversations. We're gonna be right back with more. Dr
- 14:08Speaker 1: Orlanda Ragulin and Dr Lana. One of the first questions
- 14:11Speaker 1: I gotta ask you is the age group. So we're
- 14:13Speaker 1: gonna talk about, you know, some of your special with
- 14:16Speaker 1: the Tierra or toe technique, you know founder or to
- 14:19Speaker 1: fix your feet. We're gonna talk about all that in
- 14:21Speaker 1: the next break. Don't go nowhere. If you got feet problems,
- 14:23Speaker 1: are you looking down at your feet and you need
- 14:25Speaker 1: to call her. She's based in New York and the
- 14:28Speaker 1: DC market. She's one of the best. As you can see.
- 14:31Speaker 1: I enjoy talking to her all the time. She makes
- 14:33Speaker 1: me smile because when you go in there and talking
- 14:35Speaker 1: about your feet, you also still know what they want
- 14:37Speaker 1: to do. You do the job, but also that you
- 14:39Speaker 1: know that they got a little personality. That's where we
- 14:41Speaker 1: are in two seventeen. Personality along with the skills said.
- 14:45Speaker 1: That's what you get with Dr Landa. Ragle. We were
- 14:47Speaker 1: right back with more money Making Conversations. Hi, this Sean McGown.
- 14:52Speaker 1: You're listening to Money Making Conversations. I'm your host every Monday.
- 14:56Speaker 1: You can hear this show on my Facebook page. You
- 14:59Speaker 1: can see it fourteen eight in Houston, Texas. More important,
- 15:02Speaker 1: you can hear on I Heart Radio podcast. Just go
- 15:06Speaker 1: to our Heart Radio podcast. Through the search of Money
- 15:09Speaker 1: Making conversation and all my current and past podcasts on that.
- 15:14Speaker 1: We're making it happen, um inter nash worldwide. I'm back
- 15:19Speaker 1: and my guests. Who's gonna lie right now? She is
- 15:22Speaker 1: the founder of Fixed Your Feet, the very popular for
- 15:26Speaker 1: dietrists located in New York City on Park Avenue in
- 15:29Speaker 1: the Washington d C. Area in Syria Springs, Maryland. Please
- 15:32Speaker 1: welcome back to my show. Uh, Dr landa raggling. How
- 15:35Speaker 1: you doing, doctor, I'm good? Thank you again, I'm sounding
- 15:39Speaker 1: like I know what I'm doing on doctor. It was
- 15:42Speaker 1: a sound I know I'm moving up to scale. I
- 15:44Speaker 1: want to ask you just one question before we get started. Um,
- 15:47Speaker 1: I won't be able to have people call in, but
- 15:49Speaker 1: can I bring you back and take phone calls with you?
- 15:53Speaker 1: Also for people who have little issues and you can
- 15:55Speaker 1: help Mark and we can we develop that relationship. Is
- 15:57Speaker 1: that cool? Litly? I would love to do that. You go.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I know, friend, Now tell me about fix your Feet?
- 16:07Speaker 1: What is that? What is fix your Feet? Okay, so
- 16:11Speaker 1: how Fixture Feet started? Was that? Um? First of all,
- 16:16Speaker 1: I understand what it's like to walk in the shoes
- 16:19Speaker 1: or should I say the heels that strong women walk.
- 16:22Speaker 1: It um, the feet that carry us support our foundation. Therefore,
- 16:27Speaker 1: I wanted to empower women with a strong foundation. So
- 16:30Speaker 1: I became a p dietrist and I am to improve
- 16:34Speaker 1: and enhance that foundation. And so, like I said, I'm
- 16:38Speaker 1: just proud to be founder of this and providing this
- 16:41Speaker 1: service by fixing these things and hamlets with the cosmetic resolve.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Now you are the creator of the Tierratoe technique. Now
- 16:50Speaker 1: I'm on the phone just to bring everybody for the speed.
- 16:52Speaker 1: I'm on the phone now renown for dietrists, Dr Yolanda Rag.
- 16:57Speaker 1: She's based, like I said, in the New York City
- 16:59Speaker 1: markets where is the DC market? But she's available, she's
- 17:02Speaker 1: take phone calls. She gives advice, and she's a she's
- 17:05Speaker 1: a motivator and she inspired specially women African American women
- 17:09Speaker 1: to be successful. And I think that's really important because
- 17:12Speaker 1: you may note in your bio day to reach a
- 17:14Speaker 1: Nelson report African American women, uh say a number of
- 17:17Speaker 1: businesses with the majority owned by Black women group sixty
- 17:20Speaker 1: seven percent between two thousand and seven and twelve. And
- 17:24Speaker 1: that's important to you to you correct, Yeah, Well, here's
- 17:29Speaker 1: the thing that's that's important to me about this it's
- 17:32Speaker 1: that I think it's really funny with this Nielsen report,
- 17:35Speaker 1: and it came out in yet two thousand and seven
- 17:38Speaker 1: to they did a study from two thousand and seven
- 17:41Speaker 1: to twelve. And here's the thing, Wilson is late. They're
- 17:48Speaker 1: just now figuring this out. I, as an African American woman,
- 17:52Speaker 1: have always understood our magic. The mainstream is finally waking
- 17:58Speaker 1: up through their science. And they probably got this science
- 18:02Speaker 1: because some intern like myself, said, hey, you know, there's
- 18:05Speaker 1: a whole group of people over year that needs to
- 18:07Speaker 1: be serviced, and they're finding out the magic of the
- 18:11Speaker 1: African American woman and they're buying power and their spending power.
- 18:15Speaker 1: In fact, this is partly why I Fix Your Feet
- 18:18Speaker 1: is so successful. I am part of a group that
- 18:21Speaker 1: is underserved and was an afterthought to Marketers, Nels Reels.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Import to step solidifies everything that I've already known. Through
- 18:32Speaker 1: that frustration, I took what I do and I focused
- 18:37Speaker 1: it on this demographic to African American woman from the
- 18:41Speaker 1: jump started. This is from the beginning. Um, and you
- 18:45Speaker 1: don't know and and and it's incredible because how every
- 18:49Speaker 1: single time I go into the office, someone says, finally
- 18:52Speaker 1: somebody understands exactly what I want and what I need.
- 18:57Speaker 1: That being said, I was highly recommend to anybody out
- 19:01Speaker 1: there who's a business owner and entrepreneur thinking of going
- 19:05Speaker 1: into the business is to do the same and find
- 19:08Speaker 1: out what their target market is and serve them first.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Find out your underserved market in your field and share
- 19:16Speaker 1: your story. Create a business specifically for your dream demographics,
- 19:21Speaker 1: and that will be your differentiator. Which shan, I was
- 19:26Speaker 1: simply an early adopter of my own market because I
- 19:29Speaker 1: want to say that because I want They want to
- 19:31Speaker 1: interrupt you because this this report was two thousand seven
- 19:35Speaker 1: to two thousand twelve. You was on the Steve Harvey
- 19:37Speaker 1: Show between two thousand five to two thousand seven in
- 19:40Speaker 1: New York City, so you already was ahead of the
- 19:43Speaker 1: curve the thought process. Yeah, and and exactly. And the
- 19:47Speaker 1: thing is the data was already there. They just never
- 19:50Speaker 1: took the time to do it. And when they exhausted
- 19:54Speaker 1: who they were already marketing to in the beginning, then
- 19:58Speaker 1: that says, oh, they scrambled around. Don't say, oh, who
- 20:00Speaker 1: else can we get money from? We've been African American
- 20:04Speaker 1: women have been sitting here with their hands raised high
- 20:08Speaker 1: like our old horse shot here here, we're here, yea
- 20:13Speaker 1: over here. Yeah, and they're just now Finn and they're
- 20:16Speaker 1: talking about you know her, you know our science, her magic. No,
- 20:20Speaker 1: the massive magic has been here. It's been here every year.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Let me back up everything here, come and make a
- 20:27Speaker 1: little personal just Rahan. I make their own bad feet,
- 20:29Speaker 1: bad feet and off, you know, because in college, you know,
- 20:33Speaker 1: I will all the wrong shoes, pointytold shoes, and I
- 20:37Speaker 1: want to shoes that to impress the ladies. I'm gonna
- 20:40Speaker 1: be as true. You know. If the ladies like that shoe,
- 20:43Speaker 1: I don't care how bad it hurt myself. You know.
- 20:47Speaker 1: I mean I one shoe. It actually had a little
- 20:50Speaker 1: it left an imprint a point in the side of
- 20:53Speaker 1: my foot because it was badly made. But guess what.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I walked to the nightclub and them shoes for chin getters.
- 21:01Speaker 1: What are the signs? I guess gotta talk to me
- 21:05Speaker 1: because I was stupid? What type of you? And maybe
- 21:08Speaker 1: I'm just being too broad? What are the sign to say?
- 21:10Speaker 1: Stop stop treating your feet that way? This is what
- 21:13Speaker 1: you're supposed to be supposed to do to have quality feet.
- 21:17Speaker 1: That's gonna take you to your grave. Hey, look, this
- 21:21Speaker 1: is I tell everybody this. If it hurts, don't buy it.
- 21:27Speaker 1: It's it's you're too late doctor, You're too late for me.
- 21:31Speaker 1: You know, there's another there's another sadly shoe out there
- 21:35Speaker 1: that's gonna be an eye catcher, that's gonna be proper
- 21:38Speaker 1: for your foot. Because mind you, Rashan, even though that's
- 21:41Speaker 1: that shoe wasn't good for your foot, there is a
- 21:43Speaker 1: foot tip that shoe can tolerate. It was just that
- 21:48Speaker 1: your foot tipe couldn't tolerate. It could not, it could not,
- 21:54Speaker 1: And I wore him anyway. I warned them anyway, that's
- 21:56Speaker 1: the whole stupid part of it. I warm anyway, not today.
- 22:01Speaker 1: You know, I take care of my feet. You know
- 22:03Speaker 1: I got I got a wide foot, so I buy
- 22:05Speaker 1: wide shoes. You know, I don't care what anybody to
- 22:08Speaker 1: think about what I got on my feet, these feet,
- 22:11Speaker 1: these shoes make me happy. I wear a particular brand
- 22:14Speaker 1: only for my feet, and I'm happy. It is not
- 22:17Speaker 1: about based on money. It's based on quality. And like
- 22:20Speaker 1: you said, if it hurts, don't put it on. Don't
- 22:23Speaker 1: put it on. Yeah, because there there are expensive, high
- 22:26Speaker 1: end shoes that hurt also, so it's all about it.
- 22:30Speaker 1: So it's all about it. It is all about how
- 22:34Speaker 1: what how is that if you can your foot tolerate
- 22:38Speaker 1: that particular shoe, if they can't leave it alone. I
- 22:40Speaker 1: have some ladies that can only wear pointytoat shoes. And
- 22:44Speaker 1: you'll you'll see literature out there that says, oh, pointytoat
- 22:47Speaker 1: shoes will do this and that and the other, and
- 22:50Speaker 1: that's not necessarily true. There is a certain foot type
- 22:54Speaker 1: that actually fares well in a pointytoat shoe, and they do.
- 22:59Speaker 1: They do too well in around box show and vice versa.
- 23:04Speaker 1: So it's it's it's for the particular individual. You have
- 23:08Speaker 1: to find the show. And also, Rashawn, I have to
- 23:11Speaker 1: say men are more fortunate because they do make shoes
- 23:14Speaker 1: and white the whips, and they do make nice looking
- 23:17Speaker 1: shoes and white the whips for you men, that's not
- 23:19Speaker 1: an option for us. I'm just gonna let you know
- 23:22Speaker 1: CVS Walgreens, right, they own me on that little foot out.
- 23:27Speaker 1: They own Rashawn mcgonna, Rashaan mcgonag gotta go down there.
- 23:30Speaker 1: I look like I travel with a little clinical kit.
- 23:32Speaker 1: You know. I got my little blade and got my
- 23:34Speaker 1: little Sanda I got everything to make my feet happy.
- 23:38Speaker 1: But more importantly, yeah, before you get off the air,
- 23:41Speaker 1: you know, because I'm glad you agreed to come back
- 23:43Speaker 1: on my show and take questions, because this has been
- 23:46Speaker 1: a fantastic cold call, because I don't want anybody to
- 23:49Speaker 1: come on my show confused about what I'm trying to do.
- 23:52Speaker 1: You're doing exactly what I need to tell my my listeners,
- 23:55Speaker 1: my viewers, people on our heart radio podcast, is that
- 23:58Speaker 1: you know, find your and stop being all over the place,
- 24:02Speaker 1: stop over yes, yes, and so and and and you know.
- 24:07Speaker 1: I found one of the biggest things that I found
- 24:09Speaker 1: to be a problem is that when I told people
- 24:12Speaker 1: I want to focus on African American women, and I
- 24:15Speaker 1: had a goal and like, if I could take every
- 24:17Speaker 1: African American female away from my competitors, I'm like, I'm
- 24:20Speaker 1: a super happy lady. And I had people say, well,
- 24:23Speaker 1: why do you only why don't you just want to
- 24:25Speaker 1: go after that? And I'm like, well, listen, if you look,
- 24:29Speaker 1: if you do if you look at it, if you
- 24:31Speaker 1: look at the ratio of African American women that are
- 24:34Speaker 1: signed enough for this procedure as opposed to their Caucasian cohorts,
- 24:39Speaker 1: we are the majority. So we have to stop underestimating us,
- 24:45Speaker 1: and and and and and focus on like I said,
- 24:49Speaker 1: focus on the people that wanted the most. I know
- 24:52Speaker 1: who wants this the most now me being African American
- 24:55Speaker 1: female and being the only player, a big player out there,
- 24:59Speaker 1: that Frican American woman. While Woden, I focused on that demographic.
- 25:04Speaker 1: But everybody everything else will fall in line. And that's
- 25:09Speaker 1: what's happening. I focused on the demographic that one is
- 25:12Speaker 1: the most and guess what, I still have people from
- 25:15Speaker 1: all different races, nationalities from all over the world that
- 25:21Speaker 1: seek out my services. You know I focused in even
- 25:25Speaker 1: though I focused on African American woman's. Uh well, the
- 25:30Speaker 1: thing I like about is that you gave yourself a base.
- 25:33Speaker 1: And that's what a lot of you know. Like I said,
- 25:35Speaker 1: you know, any successful company, whether you Apple or you
- 25:38Speaker 1: Chick fil A, they have a base that they identify
- 25:41Speaker 1: and then they advertise to everybody. Because if your base
- 25:45Speaker 1: is gonna be there for you, then that's what you
- 25:47Speaker 1: can produce. You your your budgets, you'll you'll and your
- 25:50Speaker 1: quarterly what you're gonna be doing when you can start forecasting,
- 25:54Speaker 1: when you know who you're talking to and that's really important.
- 25:58Speaker 1: And I'm so so happy you was able to come
- 25:59Speaker 1: on the show just to convey that message consistently. Yes, yes,
- 26:04Speaker 1: I'm so glad that I you know, I could come
- 26:06Speaker 1: on here and let people know, because don't be afraid
- 26:09Speaker 1: to to target that audience that that other people are
- 26:14Speaker 1: going to tell you why are you targeting them? Don't
- 26:16Speaker 1: be afraid. If you have a distinct intuition that these
- 26:20Speaker 1: are the people that you want to drive to your business,
- 26:23Speaker 1: you need to go with that. You need to go
- 26:25Speaker 1: with that. And before we get on the phone, tell
- 26:27Speaker 1: us how we can reach out to you. Come on now, Okay,
- 26:30Speaker 1: So at fixture feed dot com you can reach me

- 27:36Speaker 1: know about how I started to business is almost no money,
- 27:39Speaker 1: so I want to talk about that too. Okay, we're
- 27:41Speaker 1: starting back right, give her out of applause, doctor, you're
- 27:44Speaker 1: Notanda Raguling. She's based out of New York City on
- 27:46Speaker 1: Park Avenue in the DC area. Silver It Springs, Maryland.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Fix your feet, make it happen. Will be right back
- 27:53Speaker 1: from my man, Alan Sean McDonald back with money making conversation.
- 27:59Speaker 1: Let's get your rolling right along, because he's on the
- 28:01Speaker 1: phone right now. He's one of my favorite actors. He
- 28:03Speaker 1: doesn't even know that then. I'm a big fan of his,
- 28:06Speaker 1: but he's about to find out now because he's on
- 28:08Speaker 1: my show. Talk about him being an entrepreneur, let's get
- 28:11Speaker 1: these credits out the way. My next guest as an actor, writer, director,
- 28:14Speaker 1: and entrepreneur. You've seen him on shows like Blackish on ABC, Survivors,
- 28:18Speaker 1: Remorse which is on Stars and had the finale last night.
- 28:22Speaker 1: You're the Worst films like Where's the Money? Straight out
- 28:25Speaker 1: of Competent, the Equalizes in case and developed the Injustry's
- 28:28Speaker 1: first digital for short films. Everybody digital, please work with
- 28:31Speaker 1: the money making conversation the very talented Talleidar Alan Maldonado, Alan,
- 28:39Speaker 1: how you doing? What's going on? Jim? And I'm doing
- 28:42Speaker 1: next with the man? Thank you for the fantastic intro.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Come on now, I'm telling the truth. I woul tell
- 28:46Speaker 1: you something, man. I'm a big fan of yours, all right, So,
- 28:49Speaker 1: oh man, that's love, you know. And and it's so
- 28:53Speaker 1: crazy because they only got me for one break with you,
- 28:55Speaker 1: and we got a lot of talk about but we're
- 28:57Speaker 1: gonna squeeze when we can, and it's one break. But
- 28:59Speaker 1: the first I gotta just talk about me being a
- 29:00Speaker 1: fan of yours. Okay, Okay, So I don't know how
- 29:04Speaker 1: many minutes they're gonna take, but we gotta talk about that, man,
- 29:06Speaker 1: because you're talented dude. We got Hey, we're gonna we're
- 29:08Speaker 1: gonna have to do what we do because first of all,
- 29:11Speaker 1: this this brother here man, because this is why I
- 29:13Speaker 1: like him, because see he's an actor, but he's also
- 29:17Speaker 1: a writer, and so you're writing on survivor's remorse right now? Correct? Correct, Okay,
- 29:21Speaker 1: which is important to here because see, you can see
- 29:24Speaker 1: the power of anything in the industry is behind the camera.
- 29:29Speaker 1: You can work, you can direct, you can put yourself
- 29:31Speaker 1: in front of the camera, just like I doing right now,
- 29:34Speaker 1: a writer, director, and producer. He understands that right now.
- 29:38Speaker 1: But if you don't, if you, if you if you
- 29:41Speaker 1: google this young man right now and you go, oh,
- 29:44Speaker 1: I know that face. Oh that's what that is. Now,
- 29:49Speaker 1: that's what they're gonna say. I swear that they're gonna say,
- 29:51Speaker 1: because I consider myself around the way famous man. Because
- 29:55Speaker 1: everybody was like, no, I know, I know you can
- 29:57Speaker 1: comewhere living next to channel right and be like yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 30:03Speaker 1: Now do other changes fish play on some days, man,
- 30:07Speaker 1: because you building your brand as a you know, lesuse
- 30:10Speaker 1: the word character actor, you know, because you're funny, you
- 30:13Speaker 1: could be dramatic. You know. Let's put this away a
- 30:16Speaker 1: young Samuel Jackson. You feel me, he come talking about it.
- 30:22Speaker 1: You feel so so his character on Survivor's Remort And
- 30:26Speaker 1: I'm mad because the finale was last night, and I
- 30:30Speaker 1: should have had you on the show last week to
- 30:33Speaker 1: promote the finalite. But you got stuff going on this week.
- 30:36Speaker 1: So we're in good shape because you're on Black Is
- 30:38Speaker 1: on this this week, and you've got the other stuff
- 30:41Speaker 1: coming up with Tracy Moore. You're gonna talk about all that.
- 30:43Speaker 1: Like I said, you should not have been one break
- 30:45Speaker 1: okay now on Black Is Man, I mean on Survivor's Remorse.
- 30:51Speaker 1: When you played this character, it was kind of like
- 30:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you some man. That character was so
- 30:57Speaker 1: funny and so real because he was a ghetto. You
- 30:59Speaker 1: were like a ghetto manager for this football player. Correct. Yeah, yeah,
- 31:05Speaker 1: I was ex drug dealer, turn manager, was a meth
- 31:10Speaker 1: It was a mess. Now. The only thing that maybe
- 31:13Speaker 1: mad because this character was so funny and was so good.
- 31:17Speaker 1: Break that character down right quick, because I don't want
- 31:18Speaker 1: anybody he started and played this character on Survivors Moore
- 31:22Speaker 1: and looked detail about it. Yeah. No, definitely, I mean
- 31:26Speaker 1: you definitely go to Stars and cat teas into a
- 31:28Speaker 1: Survivors the Morris Man played the character named the Shan Maybe,
- 31:31Speaker 1: the ex drug dealer turn manager of the number one
- 31:34Speaker 1: draft pick uh for the current NFL UH. And he
- 31:40Speaker 1: basically was everything that he wanted in the manager. That
- 31:45Speaker 1: was fun. He was crazy, he was sorry. He would
- 31:47Speaker 1: help get prostitutes to drugs like he was. He was
- 31:50Speaker 1: the worst. He was the worst of the best thing
- 31:52Speaker 1: for anybody trying to have a good job. Okay, we're
- 31:55Speaker 1: gonna take you to the mac. Go all the way right,
- 31:58Speaker 1: and and and rob Rico lead ain't into the picture
- 32:00Speaker 1: of rod Rico Lee. He's the manager of the star
- 32:03Speaker 1: of the series camp. And so the only part I
- 32:06Speaker 1: said you should have shot Rodrico Lee is when he
- 32:09Speaker 1: confronted you on that basketball court. Oh, your character would
- 32:15Speaker 1: have shot him. Your character in real life would have
- 32:18Speaker 1: shot Yeah. He would even leave gave a flat. You
- 32:21Speaker 1: would have leave flet You'd never thinking about something, Yeah, definitely,
- 32:25Speaker 1: because that character would. That character was that amazing to me.
- 32:28Speaker 1: It was funny. I hope to see it again. But
- 32:30Speaker 1: you're right up, so you know you're writing in the
- 32:32Speaker 1: writer's room, So let's see season five. I got to
- 32:35Speaker 1: see him pop up again. But man, yeah, every time
- 32:39Speaker 1: when I was in the writing's room of every pick,
- 32:41Speaker 1: it could be something that had to do with making,
- 32:43Speaker 1: you know, birthday cake through flowers, I was like aga
- 32:48Speaker 1: and delivering this. Yeah, both definitely, I was. I was
- 32:52Speaker 1: always you know, I love it and I hope you
- 32:56Speaker 1: don't mind. I hope you don't mind me. You know,
- 32:58Speaker 1: chill leading your own for a few is before we
- 33:00Speaker 1: get it too. Why you really got problem? I appreciate it. Okay, cool.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Now let's talk about this app, this ultimately library for
- 33:07Speaker 1: License award winning film from across the world providing a
- 33:10Speaker 1: home for short film called Everybody Digital. Please tell everybody
- 33:14Speaker 1: what exactly is that Everybody Digital? Everybody Digital? Man, um,
- 33:20Speaker 1: it's a short film uh streaming app. Basically, we're the
- 33:25Speaker 1: um short film version of Netflix. So like, say that
- 33:29Speaker 1: one more time, A let's say that one more time. Man,
- 33:31Speaker 1: you you don't throw a brand like that and just
- 33:33Speaker 1: want that's right, that's right. We are the short film
- 33:37Speaker 1: version of Netflix, being that we have short films instead
- 33:41Speaker 1: of feature films and with an original content such as
- 33:45Speaker 1: original short films, original digital series. Basically everything that Netflix does,
- 33:51Speaker 1: but in the short form. Version. Um, the app is
- 33:55Speaker 1: available now uh in the Apple story, to be ready
- 33:58Speaker 1: in Google next month, but the next month and to
- 34:02Speaker 1: be ready um. And it's it's a it's a it's
- 34:06Speaker 1: a it's a feat that hasn't yet to be done,
- 34:08Speaker 1: being that short films have been looked over. They've been
- 34:12Speaker 1: only seen as a step of song. But I've been
- 34:14Speaker 1: in the industry where like music videos, um, even to
- 34:20Speaker 1: the point where like these Instagram short videos are and
- 34:23Speaker 1: make billions of dollars for individuals. So um uh, short
- 34:28Speaker 1: films have been left behind, being that they're a grandfather
- 34:31Speaker 1: to all of these Instagram videos and short skits and everything. Uh.
- 34:35Speaker 1: In the eighties, short films used to go before feature films, um,
- 34:39Speaker 1: and they were replaced by trailers. So at this current time,
- 34:43Speaker 1: before everybody did it, there was no distribution. There was
- 34:46Speaker 1: no way for the average consumer to even see or
- 34:48Speaker 1: even know these films existed. Um. It all came about
- 34:53Speaker 1: because I had a I'm a short filmmaker myself, so
- 34:56Speaker 1: I consider it like Foo Boo for us by us
- 34:58Speaker 1: a short film app by short filmmaker UM, where I
- 35:02Speaker 1: had a film that went on film festivals and won
- 35:06Speaker 1: countless awards. And gotten several film festivals, and after the
- 35:10Speaker 1: Twitter fifth team up window that you have with film festivals,
- 35:14Speaker 1: it was over. There was no distribution and the demographic
- 35:17Speaker 1: was so limited, being that the people that go to
- 35:20Speaker 1: these film festivals are usually friends of family, people are
- 35:23Speaker 1: part of the film are just people in the film industry.
- 35:26Speaker 1: The avid consumer that enjoys movies every weekend and watch
- 35:30Speaker 1: television has no clue to even film festivals eive exists.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Don't even know what they even do or consist of.
- 35:35Speaker 1: So I want to create a platform to to broaden
- 35:39Speaker 1: the exposure, uh for short films and also with everybody digital.
- 35:44Speaker 1: We're creating an industry. So in two years we would
- 35:47Speaker 1: have created an industry for short films to actually make
- 35:50Speaker 1: money with right right, right, right right what wich is
- 35:53Speaker 1: kind of like you know what YouTube is doing right
- 35:55Speaker 1: now now? They call it YouTube bread, correct right right?
- 35:58Speaker 1: That that's their originals, that's their original content format. Yea,
- 36:02Speaker 1: what is YouTube bread? Now? Let's let's talk about your
- 36:05Speaker 1: upcoming because I gotta I'll be remiss, I brag about
- 36:08Speaker 1: how challenge you are and not tell people what's happened
- 36:10Speaker 1: this week because you're on black is just on the
- 36:12Speaker 1: seventeenth of this week, right correct, Black tell us about
- 36:16Speaker 1: that character set up, and then we're gonna talk about
- 36:18Speaker 1: the last o g because I'll be on there with
- 36:20Speaker 1: a boar Tracy Morrigan and centric the entertaining j Alex.
- 36:24Speaker 1: You got a friend over here, brother, you want the
- 36:26Speaker 1: same lane that I want my friends? You know, Black,
- 36:31Speaker 1: it's good old Curtis may This this is Dre Anthony
- 36:35Speaker 1: and character. He's a cool guy in the office, always
- 36:38Speaker 1: chiming in and usually giving them the wrong advice. Characters
- 36:42Speaker 1: the do the wrong things when it comes to uh
- 36:46Speaker 1: what what what? What is black and what is not?
- 36:49Speaker 1: Um so I'm definitely the person that puts the battery
- 36:53Speaker 1: in his back and charge him up to usually do
- 36:55Speaker 1: something that he shouldn't. So uh so, yeah, that's that's
- 36:58Speaker 1: that's black Man. Proud of the show. But on that
- 37:01Speaker 1: sin season one and um the note rights and the
- 37:04Speaker 1: accolades that we were receiving, it's just you know, a
- 37:07Speaker 1: dream come true. Man to be, you know, being part
- 37:09Speaker 1: of the show that's gonna be you know, uh an

- 37:24Speaker 1: like I said, I just tell you something, Alan, you
- 37:27Speaker 1: got a friend to me, brother, you got a fan
- 37:29Speaker 1: of me. The fact that you're going into the writing side,
- 37:32Speaker 1: you're going to the technical side, know that I'm always
- 37:35Speaker 1: there to support your brand. Is that, man? Thank you.
- 37:38Speaker 1: I appreciate man. I love the support. Man. And and
- 37:42Speaker 1: we as a community, we definitely got to support each
- 37:44Speaker 1: other and support our dreams. And that's the way we're
- 37:47Speaker 1: gonna we're gonna move forward as a as a as
- 37:49Speaker 1: a as a community. Man, just because we gotta do
- 37:52Speaker 1: it our sail. We can't keep complaining and looking out
- 37:54Speaker 1: for other people to do it for us. We got
- 37:55Speaker 1: to look within our own community and support each other.
- 37:57Speaker 1: And then then we can stand tall, and we can
- 37:59Speaker 1: stand calling our own then we can make some real notice. Absolutely,
- 38:02Speaker 1: And the great thing about it, Okay, let's let's back
- 38:04Speaker 1: up right quick. Everybody digital, how can they get that? Yes,

- 39:54Speaker 1: got more to come. If you are a victim of
- 39:56Speaker 1: the Hurricane Harvard and you want to learn about disaster
- 39:59Speaker 1: relief loan, the deadline is coming up. Richard Jakins is
- 40:02Speaker 1: coming right back. Hi. This was Sean McDonald. Welcome back
- 40:06Speaker 1: to money Making Conversation. You're just getting rolled and just
- 40:09Speaker 1: wrapped up with Dr Dr Landa app Rockanda Adams, Dr
- 40:14Speaker 1: Landa raglan Uh for Diatrists Extraordinaire out of New York
- 40:19Speaker 1: City and the d Cery Bunyan and Hammat old Foot
- 40:22Speaker 1: the Expert also just finished a great call over Man
- 40:26Speaker 1: Alan Maldonado, with the digital Uh, every everybody digital. You've
- 40:30Speaker 1: got short films is the Netflix of short pigs. In
- 40:33Speaker 1: his napp that he's launched on the Apple platform is
- 40:35Speaker 1: free as Everybody Digital. Also coming up on the show
- 40:39Speaker 1: with my Man, dr Ian Smith, uh, number one New
- 40:43Speaker 1: York Times bestseller, write a new book every year. And
- 40:45Speaker 1: then also after that, CNN contributor political expert Van Jones,
- 40:50Speaker 1: another person I'm a Vick Fander. But before we go
- 40:53Speaker 1: in there further, I had another person on the show
- 40:55Speaker 1: talking about disaster recovery and it was tied to the
- 40:59Speaker 1: small busin this administration. That was Richard jenkins Um inviting
- 41:03Speaker 1: them back on the show. Got wrapped up to the meeting.
- 41:05Speaker 1: But that doesn't mean that the SBA they'll cover them sales.
- 41:08Speaker 1: They got back up for backup because they're gonna make
- 41:10Speaker 1: sure you get the information out there. Please. Working for
- 41:13Speaker 1: the first time on money making Conversations from the Small
- 41:16Speaker 1: Business Administration, Mark Randall Hayde on Mark, I'm Donna very well,
- 41:20Speaker 1: thank you with you, thank for having us on My Man.
- 41:23Speaker 1: I really appreciate it. H Richard really set me up.
- 41:26Speaker 1: He gave me a lot of information. There's a deadline
- 41:29Speaker 1: coming up. Correct, That is correct. Cover is the deadline
- 41:34Speaker 1: to register with FEMA and to apply to the U. S.
- 41:37Speaker 1: Small Business Administrations for a federal low interest loan. So
- 41:40Speaker 1: it's a very important deadline. We really want people to
- 41:44Speaker 1: not miss out on anything and the assistance they may have.
- 41:47Speaker 1: So it's important to register with FEMA. In most cases,
- 41:50Speaker 1: they will refer you to s b A. Right, it's
- 41:53Speaker 1: important that to complete that SBA application for a number
- 41:55Speaker 1: of reasons. You know, it's really important that I that
- 41:59Speaker 1: you came back on because remember that as soon as
- 42:01Speaker 1: he hunk up the phone, we just say, really, I
- 42:03Speaker 1: should have mentioned about the deadline. Can you bring me back?
- 42:05Speaker 1: And I you know I'm not. I'm not doing this
- 42:07Speaker 1: show just for ratings. Let me don't get the information
- 42:09Speaker 1: out to change people's lives and impact them. Now, this
- 42:12Speaker 1: deadline is also for homeowners as well a small businesses. Correct,
- 42:15Speaker 1: that's correct. When there's a disaster, s b A offers
- 42:19Speaker 1: loans to businesses of all sizes as well as homeowners
- 42:22Speaker 1: and renters, so the residents. So if you if you
- 42:25Speaker 1: were impacted by Hurricane Harvey and you restro a FEMA,
- 42:29Speaker 1: then you need in a favor for the SBA. You
- 42:31Speaker 1: need to apply to SBA. There's no cost, there's no obligation,
- 42:34Speaker 1: no fees associated with applying to SBA. So at this
- 42:37Speaker 1: point you don't want to try, and you only got
- 42:39Speaker 1: to talk over twenty four you don't want to try
- 42:41Speaker 1: and make up your mind. If you think you need
- 42:42Speaker 1: or want to loan, go ahead and apply. If we're
- 42:44Speaker 1: able to prove you, You'll have plenty of time to
- 42:46Speaker 1: make that decision and you'll know if you have a
- 42:48Speaker 1: we're able to prove you to use that in your
- 42:50Speaker 1: planning for your recovery. That was interesting. I had a
- 42:53Speaker 1: really good conversation with my nephew and he's a he's
- 42:56Speaker 1: a very successful barbecue. I'm using as an example because
- 42:59Speaker 1: he need used to be using this example and his
- 43:02Speaker 1: his food trailer was damaged by Hurricane Harvey with uh,
- 43:05Speaker 1: you know, water damage came through the roof and uh.
- 43:08Speaker 1: He came to me for assistance and to help him
- 43:11Speaker 1: all and we're gonna partner up. And then I asked him,
- 43:13Speaker 1: I said, have you contacted the SBA? He said, yeah,
- 43:17Speaker 1: but you know, I don't really want to go through
- 43:19Speaker 1: all that half, so and then he went over there.
- 43:22Speaker 1: I applied but then they turned me down, you know,
- 43:26Speaker 1: so I went so a month passed and now, and
- 43:28Speaker 1: then then when Richard told me the deadline was coming
- 43:30Speaker 1: back up, I went back to him. I go, okay,
- 43:32Speaker 1: can you tell me again exactly what happened with the SBA. Well,
- 43:37Speaker 1: they turned me down. I said, Uh, okay, why did
- 43:40Speaker 1: they turn you down when they're telling me they're clearing
- 43:42Speaker 1: people over there at an alarming rate? He said. Then
- 43:46Speaker 1: he did his homework and he realized that he had
- 43:48Speaker 1: filled out the paperwork incorrectly. So that's the that's the
- 43:51Speaker 1: people are kind of like stopping themselves. Correct. That's correct.
- 43:55Speaker 1: And we have uh SBA folks, and fifty three centers
- 44:00Speaker 1: throughout the damaged the counties that were declared, and they're
- 44:03Speaker 1: at the disaster recovery centers and that the business recovery centers,
- 44:07Speaker 1: and we will sit down and help you actually apply online.
- 44:10Speaker 1: And when we get it done, it's gonna be in
- 44:12Speaker 1: and it's gonna be in right and accepted. So we'll
- 44:14Speaker 1: go over all the things you need to do. And
- 44:16Speaker 1: in this case, he could go back in the center
- 44:18Speaker 1: and say, Okay, what I need to make do different here?
- 44:20Speaker 1: What what do we need to do and we will
- 44:21Speaker 1: help him to get that submitted timely, right, And so
- 44:25Speaker 1: that's that's what I wanted to hear, because see, I
- 44:27Speaker 1: get so frustrated with people who just throw their arms
- 44:30Speaker 1: up and then they and then they kind of bad
- 44:32Speaker 1: off the government and bad off departments and say, you know,
- 44:35Speaker 1: the paperworkers endless or they're not gonna help you. Is all.
- 44:38Speaker 1: It is all mouthpiece activity that's going over there. And
- 44:41Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you, from the time I sat down
- 44:43Speaker 1: with Tim jeff Co, I've never felt that way about
- 44:45Speaker 1: the the s p A. And I'm a champion of
- 44:48Speaker 1: what you guys do over there. With that being in mind, Mark,
- 44:51Speaker 1: how does one go online or what's some of the
- 44:53Speaker 1: steps just to qualify that is not complicated? There isn't
- 44:57Speaker 1: work involved. Isn't just click a button you say, you
- 45:00Speaker 1: have to do some work and provide information. Correct, That's correct.
- 45:04Speaker 1: And the best way is, like I said, you can
- 45:06Speaker 1: go online do it yourself, sir. Online where old mine? Where?
- 45:10Speaker 1: Where where would that website? You go to SBA dot gov.
- 45:14Speaker 1: That's just gonna be and there's gonna be a banner
- 45:16Speaker 1: across the top about Hurricane Harvey and said learn here,
- 45:20Speaker 1: learn more here, and you click on that button and
- 45:22Speaker 1: I'll take you right to the next place. It says
- 45:24Speaker 1: apply and you click that button. It takes your right
- 45:26Speaker 1: tire portal to apply online. Okay. Cool. Let me see
- 45:29Speaker 1: if I remember the homework that Richard put me on
- 45:32Speaker 1: the mark. Let me see if you can walk back
- 45:33Speaker 1: to ro Sean remembered everything. Now. Richard told me for
- 45:37Speaker 1: the homeowners that the interest rate was one point seven correct,
- 45:41Speaker 1: one point seven five correct. And he told me for
- 45:44Speaker 1: the small businesses the interest rate was three point three.
- 45:47Speaker 1: That's correct, okay. He also told me that the length
- 45:50Speaker 1: of the long was thirty years correct, can be up
- 45:53Speaker 1: to thirty years. Cool. And he also told me on
- 45:55Speaker 1: the small businesses that it could be up to two
- 45:58Speaker 1: million dollars correct, that's correct. And then he also said
- 46:02Speaker 1: on this homeowners up to two hundred thou correct, that's correct.
- 46:06Speaker 1: That's for their that's for their real estate, and forty
- 46:09Speaker 1: for their personal property including vehicles. Because a lot of
- 46:11Speaker 1: people hear the word small business administration, they don't know
- 46:14Speaker 1: that there's home recovery opportunities that they can apply for. Correct. Correct.
- 46:20Speaker 1: And he also told me the big thing right here
- 46:23Speaker 1: that there is no penalty if you pay off the
- 46:26Speaker 1: loan early. That's correct, simple interest. No penalties for paying
- 46:29Speaker 1: off early, no penalties or fees for a playing so
- 46:32Speaker 1: you have playing time to decide. You know how it's
- 46:34Speaker 1: gonna work and help you mark you let Richard no,
- 46:38Speaker 1: Rashan McDonald has done this hard work. And remember everything
- 46:42Speaker 1: that he told me, I'm not telling me. Give you
- 46:45Speaker 1: an A plus. That's you again, man. I appreciate everything
- 46:49Speaker 1: you guys are doing over there. I'm glad. I enjoyed
- 46:52Speaker 1: talking to you. I love your personality. But the bigger
- 46:54Speaker 1: thing we're trying to get out of here is that
- 46:56Speaker 1: a deadline is coming up October twenty four to apply
- 47:00Speaker 1: through through FEMA, and it will come through S B A.
- 47:03Speaker 1: You guys are making yourself available to come down and
- 47:05Speaker 1: sit down and get these applications, feel out correctly, and
- 47:09Speaker 1: get the money to the people who needed to recover.
- 47:12Speaker 1: Because small businesses are needed, homeowners are needed because guess what, taxes.
- 47:17Speaker 1: That's how cities operate. That's how counties operate. They have
- 47:20Speaker 1: to tax people in order to give you good police service,
- 47:23Speaker 1: or to get you good schools, or to give you
- 47:26Speaker 1: services at the airport that that run time, and so
- 47:29Speaker 1: it's all one big three sixty. So the government needs
- 47:33Speaker 1: to get this out there and get you on board.
- 47:36Speaker 1: Am I correct, absolutely, and we thank you. I appreciate
- 47:40Speaker 1: your helping us get the word out, my man. Uh
- 47:42Speaker 1: tell everybody, Tim, tell Richard and yourself. Man, anytime you
- 47:46Speaker 1: guys need me, I'll be at holsting to lift off
- 47:48Speaker 1: Houston contest. Uh it's coming up November three. So I'm
- 47:52Speaker 1: I'm engaged with you guys, and so I will not
- 47:55Speaker 1: I will not stop champion the Small Business Administration. Okay,
- 48:00Speaker 1: ain't thank you very much. I appreciate you. I told
- 48:03Speaker 1: it's a deadline. You heard it right here. Go to
- 48:06Speaker 1: n SBA dot gov. There's a banner across the top
- 48:08Speaker 1: that says learned Hurricane Harvey. Let's click it and change
- 48:12Speaker 1: your life. If your homeowner up to two hi thousand
- 48:14Speaker 1: dollars one point seven five interests, if you're small business,
- 48:18Speaker 1: three point three interests, up to two million dollars, thirty
- 48:21Speaker 1: year long mortgages, no penalty for early payoff. Do it
- 48:24Speaker 1: right now. We'll be back with more money making conversations.
- 48:26Speaker 1: My man. The King of weight loss, Dr Ian Smith
- 48:31Speaker 1: been knowing that. Guys, there's two thousand and seven he
- 48:33Speaker 1: has been in my life, that's almost ten years. Because
- 48:36Speaker 1: we're gonna have fun because I loved the East Sweet
- 48:38Speaker 1: and he loved and his new book is Last to
- 48:41Speaker 1: Sugar Out, Last to Sugar Out, and I loved East Sweet. Boy.
- 48:46Speaker 1: That's kind of like a collision of ignorance right there.
- 48:48Speaker 1: But we're right back with more money making conversations. Dr
- 48:51Speaker 1: Ian Smith coming up next. My guess is on the line.
- 49:00Speaker 1: I got to start talking and interviewing him first of all.
- 49:03Speaker 1: All right, it was in New York City at their
- 49:05Speaker 1: Circling Sisters Expo hosted by w BLS every year, just
- 49:09Speaker 1: a jam pack organization for hard man of women. And
- 49:12Speaker 1: now he was there. I didn't even know he was there.
- 49:16Speaker 1: Walked by. Of course, every time you walk by him,
- 49:18Speaker 1: he talking to somebody, and he always has a crowd
- 49:21Speaker 1: of people around him. I tapped him on the should
- 49:23Speaker 1: and just kept walking. Wasn't gonna bother him, keep making
- 49:26Speaker 1: that money. And then I then I finished my photo
- 49:29Speaker 1: session and I walked in the room and here he
- 49:31Speaker 1: was on stage talking about five thousand people, just just
- 49:34Speaker 1: five to every seat was fair and he was on
- 49:37Speaker 1: stage talking about five to five thousand people. I do
- 49:41Speaker 1: want to such a stage of who I'm talking to
- 49:43Speaker 1: him far. This man is a motivator, he's a game
- 49:46Speaker 1: change and I've been knowing him almost ten years now.
- 49:48Speaker 1: So let me get this intro in so y'all can
- 49:50Speaker 1: hear why I'm excited to have him on money Make
- 49:53Speaker 1: a Conversation. My next dance writes a book a year,
- 49:57Speaker 1: a book a year. He at the author of the
- 49:59Speaker 1: number one New York Times best selling books Shred The
- 50:02Speaker 1: Revolutionary Diet, Super Shred, The Big Results Diet, The Shred
- 50:06Speaker 1: Diet cook Book. Dr Smith's hilly participated the newest book,
- 50:10Speaker 1: Blast the Sugar Out, became an instant New York Times
- 50:13Speaker 1: best seller, happing hundreds of thousands of people produce bad
- 50:16Speaker 1: sugars from that diet, loose weight, little blood, sugar levels
- 50:20Speaker 1: and cut the cravis. Please welcome to Money Making Conversations.
- 50:23Speaker 1: Dr Ian Smith. Hey, what's up with Sean? Hey? Man?
- 50:32Speaker 1: I'm so happy to hear you because you are a
- 50:35Speaker 1: true go get a man. Well you are too, and
- 50:40Speaker 1: you know we're all in that orbit. But you know
- 50:42Speaker 1: when you know when you're blessed and when God has
- 50:45Speaker 1: blessed you with things and assets and abilities. I think
- 50:48Speaker 1: it's your obligation to try to pay it forward and
- 50:50Speaker 1: help others and and have a good time while you're
- 50:53Speaker 1: doing it. Well, you know, I'm familiar with your style.
- 50:55Speaker 1: I'm familiar with all the way we go, all the
- 50:57Speaker 1: way back to the fifty million pound challenge which they
- 50:59Speaker 1: found back two we was in d C and it
- 51:03Speaker 1: was cold. We launched that giant campaign that was so
- 51:05Speaker 1: successful and the reason I always a happy on the show,
- 51:09Speaker 1: we're talking about the thing that that I want to
- 51:12Speaker 1: say this correctly. It almost makes you made that people
- 51:16Speaker 1: are just out there just killing themselves because they don't
- 51:18Speaker 1: want to understand that necessary and that's what you trying
- 51:21Speaker 1: to do, trying to get them the tools to a
- 51:23Speaker 1: healthy lifestyle. Correct Yeah, well, you know, I do get
- 51:27Speaker 1: frustrated sometimes. Um luckily not all the time, but I
- 51:31Speaker 1: do get frustrated. And my frustration is not one where
- 51:34Speaker 1: I'm upset at people. It's one feeling like if I
- 51:38Speaker 1: could just get more people to invest in themselves and
- 51:42Speaker 1: just turn the corner as far as the way they
- 51:45Speaker 1: think their mentality about the importance of leading just a
- 51:48Speaker 1: better life. I've never asked for sean for anyone to
- 51:51Speaker 1: eat perfectly, or to move perfectly, or to be perfect.
- 51:53Speaker 1: That's not what my messages. My messages. If you do
- 51:56Speaker 1: a few things just a little better, then they can
- 51:59Speaker 1: drastically proved not just the quality of your life, but
- 52:02Speaker 1: the length of your life. Now, Now, when I was
- 52:04Speaker 1: in New York and I'm seeing you on stage, you know,
- 52:06Speaker 1: and you're you're talking to like five thousand people in
- 52:09Speaker 1: this room, and like I said, it was not a
- 52:11Speaker 1: seat empty. People are standing against the walls listening to
- 52:14Speaker 1: you talk. When you're talking to a room that be
- 52:17Speaker 1: not everybody is understanding your message, and some of them
- 52:20Speaker 1: don't even know why they listen to what you have
- 52:22Speaker 1: to say. How do you take a room that b
- 52:25Speaker 1: and and and and craft your narrative so they can
- 52:28Speaker 1: understand that look at here, You're just there to provide
- 52:31Speaker 1: information and an opportunity for longer and better life. Correct. Yeah,
- 52:36Speaker 1: you know that's a good question. And when I'm in
- 52:38Speaker 1: a room of that size, of that many people, I
- 52:40Speaker 1: really focus on one or two people. I don't feel
- 52:42Speaker 1: like I'm talking to a whole room. I really try
- 52:45Speaker 1: to make that intimate connection with one or two people.
- 52:47Speaker 1: So I'll look people, I'll find people in the audience
- 52:50Speaker 1: and connect with them and I and I'm talking to
- 52:54Speaker 1: them directly, and everyone else is kind of ease dropping
- 52:56Speaker 1: on that conversation. And that allows me to a like
- 53:00Speaker 1: I am engaged. Uh. That allows me to get that
- 53:03Speaker 1: kind of connection. And you speak to a lot of
- 53:05Speaker 1: artists too. You know, it's important to be able to
- 53:08Speaker 1: read the temperature of the room. And that's important because
- 53:11Speaker 1: you want to get the head nodder. You know what
- 53:13Speaker 1: I'm saying. The people who pointed you know, when you're
- 53:16Speaker 1: looking what they're smiling at you. I come back there
- 53:19Speaker 1: you go, there you go, doc. See see I thought, doctor.
- 53:23Speaker 1: We've been sitting in my office. We've laughed, man, We've
- 53:25Speaker 1: been sweet laughing because see, what I want to take
- 53:28Speaker 1: away from this show is that like I had the
- 53:30Speaker 1: doctor alt the Ragling on the show. Successful for doctors
- 53:33Speaker 1: out of New York City and d C Y very
- 53:35Speaker 1: popular foot surgeon. And it's personality. Man. You know you
- 53:39Speaker 1: write all these books, but in the end, man, you're
- 53:42Speaker 1: not controlling five thousand people unless you have a personality. Correct. Well, yeah,
- 53:47Speaker 1: and I think that you know one of the reasons
- 53:49Speaker 1: why I got into television, Um was because I felt
- 53:52Speaker 1: it though I wanted to be more than just a
- 53:54Speaker 1: doctor in the white coat, because doctors are people too.
- 53:57Speaker 1: You know, we got bills to pay, We'd like to
- 53:59Speaker 1: go to the movie. You know, we like the ball game.
- 54:01Speaker 1: So I think that my me being able to take
- 54:04Speaker 1: off the white coat and being able to relate to
- 54:06Speaker 1: people on their level and about issues that are important
- 54:09Speaker 1: to them has been really, really rewarding to me, and
- 54:12Speaker 1: hopefully along the way I helped a few people. Now
- 54:15Speaker 1: here's when I when I'm reading this book and now
- 54:17Speaker 1: I've read several of your books in the past, and
- 54:19Speaker 1: I can tell you because he's been on talk shows
- 54:22Speaker 1: with me or my talk show radio shows, or I
- 54:24Speaker 1: have to know when people come on the show what
- 54:26Speaker 1: they're talking about, so I can be able to make
- 54:29Speaker 1: sure Steve on Steven and Steve Harvey knew what was
- 54:31Speaker 1: talking about. So when I say I've read some of
- 54:33Speaker 1: the books and path, I'm telling you the honest truth now.
- 54:36Speaker 1: But this book felt a little more personal because you
- 54:39Speaker 1: talk about your twin brother, okay, and then you also
- 54:43Speaker 1: talk about you know, I believe your grandmother correct, yes,
- 54:47Speaker 1: and and how this changed her life. So there are
- 54:50Speaker 1: two different age groups that you're discussing in this book,
- 54:54Speaker 1: and then you know you're also talking younger. But those
- 54:56Speaker 1: were specific to me, and I never heard you talk
- 54:59Speaker 1: like that in your books. So was this a more
- 55:01Speaker 1: personable book to you? Yeah, it definitely was more personal. Uh.
- 55:06Speaker 1: You know the tile the book is called Last the
- 55:09Speaker 1: Sugar Out, And I decided this year that I was
- 55:11Speaker 1: going to take on sugar for several reasons. One because
- 55:14Speaker 1: sugar is everywhere. Manufacturers are putting sugars in our foods unnecessarily.
- 55:20Speaker 1: Now Listen, I like sweet things as much as the
- 55:22Speaker 1: next person. So I'm not trying to say get rid
- 55:24Speaker 1: of sugar or leminated. I'm saying we need to reduce
- 55:27Speaker 1: the amount of excess added sugars that are doing nothing
- 55:31Speaker 1: to us. And my brother, ironically, my twin brother, I
- 55:35Speaker 1: happened to be writing this book and here I were
- 55:37Speaker 1: just in the conversation list in l A. We were
- 55:39Speaker 1: just talking on the phone and he was just telling
- 55:41Speaker 1: me how much better he felt. I said, why do
- 55:42Speaker 1: you feel so so good? He said, well, I cut
- 55:45Speaker 1: sugar out. And I couldn't believe it. Here I was
- 55:48Speaker 1: writing a book about reducing sugar, and here he was
- 55:50Speaker 1: doing it, and neither one of us that communicate to
- 55:53Speaker 1: each other that we were both attacking the same thing
- 55:57Speaker 1: exactly exactly. But you know what's interesting is I learned
- 56:01Speaker 1: from his experience, and I incorporated in my introduction, is
- 56:04Speaker 1: that he said that it's not that he was feeling bad,
- 56:08Speaker 1: but he was feeling slugging. She's a Brason runner. He
- 56:11Speaker 1: wasn't feeling like himself. And then he realized on his
- 56:13Speaker 1: own that he was eating too much sugar. That sugar
- 56:16Speaker 1: was everything. And so you know that in combination with
- 56:19Speaker 1: my grandmother who was diagnosed with type two diabetes, uh
- 56:22Speaker 1: and their sixty and I was a medical student at first,
- 56:25Speaker 1: your medical student at the time, and you know when
- 56:28Speaker 1: I went home for spring for semester break, you know,
- 56:31Speaker 1: I really worked with her, trying to change how she
- 56:34Speaker 1: ate and how she moved. My grandmother even joined the gym.
- 56:36Speaker 1: So here you can imagine a six some of your
- 56:38Speaker 1: old black woman from the South who's never been in
- 56:39Speaker 1: gym in her life. You know, I had I had
- 56:42Speaker 1: her in the gym, working out and stuff like that.
- 56:43Speaker 1: But here's the good news, though, two weeks later she
- 56:47Speaker 1: went to her doctor. Her doctor said, what have you
- 56:49Speaker 1: been doing? And she said, why do you say that?
- 56:51Speaker 1: He said, I'm gonna have to cut your medications, your
- 56:54Speaker 1: diabetes medications and half because your blood sugars have dropped precipitously.
- 56:58Speaker 1: And she said, well, my grandson has to eat a
- 57:00Speaker 1: little better and I'm exercising. And that was way back
- 57:03Speaker 1: to the day that I learned that, And so when
- 57:05Speaker 1: I wrote this book, I wanted that to be my
- 57:07Speaker 1: guiding spirit about how I can talk to people on
- 57:10Speaker 1: their level about how small changes can yield big differences.
- 57:14Speaker 1: And that's really funny. Did you say that because I
- 57:16Speaker 1: was I was doing because I was doing the money
- 57:18Speaker 1: making conversations a seminar at W. B. L Elis, And
- 57:21Speaker 1: I told people that your your whole goal in life
- 57:24Speaker 1: is for your resume and the things that you hyper
- 57:26Speaker 1: about yourself to become one that where you understand your future.
- 57:30Speaker 1: And I say, in order to understand your future, you
- 57:32Speaker 1: have to look in your past, because as the foundation
- 57:35Speaker 1: and information that you've actually gained up being given in
- 57:39Speaker 1: your past that was set forth economic money making the
- 57:42Speaker 1: conversations for you in the future. And you just answered
- 57:45Speaker 1: that question right there. You said It's something that you
- 57:47Speaker 1: knew about when you and with your grandmother. Now you
- 57:52Speaker 1: now that kind of like the light bulb went off,
- 57:54Speaker 1: you know, yeah, yeah, you know, And you know what
- 57:57Speaker 1: essentially said that, because you talk about economic paths, and
- 58:00Speaker 1: you know, I'm very blessed now and I'm in a
- 58:02Speaker 1: great position in life. But like everyone else, I had
- 58:05Speaker 1: economic issues like anybody else, by the way, and I
- 58:09Speaker 1: learned a valuable lesson many many years ago when I
- 58:12Speaker 1: had spent more than I you know, owned, and when
- 58:14Speaker 1: I was making and found myself and you know, like
- 58:17Speaker 1: everyone does, and I found myself in a very very
- 58:20Speaker 1: precarious situation. And I'll never forget that day. It was
- 58:24Speaker 1: the middle of the day and I was wiped out
- 58:26Speaker 1: and I said, to God, I've looked this at the truth.
- 58:28Speaker 1: I got all my need I live in New York City,
- 58:30Speaker 1: the epreast side. I got all my needs and said
- 58:32Speaker 1: to the Lord, if you help me get out of
- 58:35Speaker 1: this financial depocle that I'm in right now, I will
- 58:38Speaker 1: never ever ever return to it. I will pay my
- 58:41Speaker 1: bills on time, I will not overspend. And I made
- 58:44Speaker 1: this commitment to him, And I'm telling you guys, my
- 58:46Speaker 1: witness two weeks later. Two weeks later, I got a
- 58:49Speaker 1: check in the mail for twenty five thousand dollars from Germany.
- 58:56Speaker 1: I had no idea why I got this check. This
- 58:58Speaker 1: this is the truth. It's crazy. Was shot. And what
- 59:01Speaker 1: happened was I had written the book that did not
- 59:04Speaker 1: sell in the US. But someone saw the manuscript and
- 59:08Speaker 1: the and the book market in Germany and they bought it.
- 59:11Speaker 1: Unbeknownst to me, they bought it, and so I didn't
- 59:14Speaker 1: know that Soul and then being sold in Germany. And
- 59:16Speaker 1: here I got this check for twenty five thousan dollars.
- 59:19Speaker 1: And I know, I hear the first thing I did,
- 59:22Speaker 1: I said the guys, I'm a George. I told you
- 59:24Speaker 1: I was gonna do it. I give all that money
- 59:26Speaker 1: to all that money. I kept five hundred dollars in
- 59:28Speaker 1: the bank for myself, took the rest of twenty five
- 59:30Speaker 1: thousand dollars and paid off my debt, like I told
- 59:33Speaker 1: him I was gonna do. And I've been straight every since.
- 59:36Speaker 1: But that's but the thing about it is that you said,
- 59:39Speaker 1: you asked, and then you did. A lot of people
- 59:42Speaker 1: get it, and they go, well, you know, you know,
- 59:45Speaker 1: you know, I'm gonna change the plan just a little bit,
- 59:48Speaker 1: but you can't change playing a little bit. No, No,
- 59:51Speaker 1: you gotta say truth to the game. You gotta say
- 59:53Speaker 1: truth to the gain, absolutely and and that's the that's
- 59:56Speaker 1: the beauty of it. And and so so you know,
- 59:57Speaker 1: you know we're gonna do two breaks there, doc So,
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: but I wanted to, you know, let my listener on it.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: And guess what, we know, we we we you you're
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: back in the Rashan McDonald family now, so you know,
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: just over the first time and the last time you're
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: gonna be on my show. It's heard on you know,
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: my I part's holding in the Houston, Texas of course,
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: but also I Party, I have a podcast on radio,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: so you know millions of people listening to this as well.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: So my whole thing with you is that, you know,
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: just watching your brand, like I said to know somebody
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: teen years, you know, you've seen a journey and I'm
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: not saying your journey is over with and now you
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: own right to rate tell me about that. Well, it's great.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: So you know they called me, uh this is my
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: ninth season with them. They called me randomly and said
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: would you come on and do some segments with us?
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: And I said sure, and that was the executive producer
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: you know about that, and the et brought me in
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: and we have just had a tremendous relationship. I am
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: her head medical contributor. I'm also like cost but here
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: also so I'm on the show where her right con
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: show where her. It's just a great relationship. She's great.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: In fact, you gotta come on the show. She's great.
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: We have a good time. I'm flying out there today
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: to do a segment and if your posish, but it's
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: really a good shows, a lot of fun and uh,
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: I just enjoyed it. I enjoy it. Let's let's get talking.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: Let's talk about your book now, because we're gonna talk
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: about you book, but first you gotta talk about Rashwan
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: in this book. I gotta let you know who you're
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: talking to because your cattle Blast Sugar Out is so
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: funny that I'm talking to you now. You're talking to
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: a guy who when he goes out to eat in
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: the restaurant, I ordered my dessert before my meal. Okay,
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: that's one too. If you pick up my phone right
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: now and you went through my apps, I have the
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: Crispy Cream Hotlight app so that means that I pressed
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: that button. It tells me wherever I'm at in the
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: country that has the Crispa cree and the hot light
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: is own. They hot and guess what you're board? Do
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: I pull over? I pull over. I'm just letting you know.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: Dr I am crazy about my sweets. Now my wife
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: would tell you this, Uh, butter pecans my ice cream. Now,
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: there you go, there you go, but see you blue
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: Bell ice cream from Texas not blue Bell ice cream.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: I will eat a half gallon of ice cream in
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: a week. Now, I will eat that in a week.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: So so when you when you write a book called
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: Blasted Sugar Out, you and me got to talk because
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: I know exactly what your brother was feeling, because whenever
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: I get off of sugar man, I feel bad. I
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: will because every because, like in the first quarter of
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: every year, I go on a non sweet diet, a
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: non salt diet, and I lose about anywhere from fifteen pounds.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: I do it all the time. I was diagnosed with cancer,
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: successfully went through surgery. It was pyroar and I've been
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: given a clean bill of hell three years ago. So
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: I do look at my health now. But I wanted
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: to tell you exactly who you talking to the story
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: talking about your book in the next break, So you
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: want to go because people always go, well, he's he
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: looked healthy, He's he probably eat good all the time. No,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: I don't, No, I don't know. And so before we
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: go to the next break, what do you say to
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: idiots like me that that out there and just got
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: a Crispy Cree hotlight app on his phone. Before we
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: eat a meal in a restaurant, he all just deserts.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: He eats a half a gallon of blue Bell butter
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: become ice cream in a week? What did you say
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: to people like me? Dude? Well, first, the first day
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: I would say to you is that you're not an idiot,
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: because there's the people are addicted to week and I
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: was addicted to and I got I got fifteen thousand
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: people who are on our Facebook page is called sugar Blasters,
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: and these guys all share the same thing you talk about.
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: And you know what, the average weight loss for experiencing
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: is twenty down in five weeks on the program. So
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: you're not an idiot. You're like everybody else. And I'll
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: tell you this before we go done it. By the way,
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: has less added sugar in it than a coke or
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: a snaffle. I too. You know something we're gonna talk
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: about when they get back, about lemonade, you know in
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: the restaurant to give you all you can drink and
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: we free refills. We're gonna talk about that when we
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: come back, right back. We're gonna be more. My man,
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: I love you, man. I'm so happy you called them. Brother.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: We're gonna have We're gonna do this. Last Last cigar
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: Out is the name of the book. He's traveling to
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: New York to do another episode of Rachel Ray. We
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: were back with more of Dr e n Jack N. Smith,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: number one New York Times best selling author Shred, but
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: last the siguar Out. This is New Buk. We're right
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: back for more money making conversations. Hi, this is Sean McDonald.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: I'm back. You're host of money Making Conversations on the phone.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: I have Dr Ian Smith, longtime relationship over ten years,
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: co host of the nationally syndicated Rachel Ratio and then
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: New York Times. I'm just talking about he owns New
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: York Times bestseller Shred. Uh, we'll talk about that a
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: little bit. But what we don't show to talk about
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: right now. It's this new book called Blast to Sugar Out.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: And already told Alur maybe my confessions about who I
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: was and who he was talking to, and he said,
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: ra Sean, don't feel bad. There are a lot of
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: people out of you. That's why I wrote this book. Now,
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: let's talk about that book, this book without you know,
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: you talk about books. You gotta be able to talk
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: about the book, but not give away the books, so
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: people go buy the book. Tell us about Blast to
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: Sugar Out. So and so. This book basically is a
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: book that helps people reduce the amount of circus that
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: they're consuming. It doesn't ask them to eliminate, it doesn't
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: ask them to eat perfectly. It's regular food. By the way,
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: when you go, every day is spelled out for you
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: five weeks. The average weight loss is up to twenty
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: pounds in five weeks. But it's regular food, so you know,
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: day one, day two, all the way through the end.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: People can buy this and grocery stores anywhere near them
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: doesn't have to be gourmet. This is a book that
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: the whole family can do. I have families for doing
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: this together because their foods that kids eat and adults eat.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: This is something I want your listeners to really take away. Sir. First,
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: you have to know how much you're eating, how much
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: sugar you're eating. And this is how you figure it out.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: When you see the numbers on the back of a label,
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: the grams of sugar. You divide that number by four.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: The number you get as a result of that division
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: is how many teaspoons are in one serving of that product.
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: So it it says, for example, that the soda has
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: sixty five grams of sugar, which, by the way, a
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: twenty ounce bottle of of of Cola can do that
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: sixty five grams of sugar. You divide that by four.
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: That's almost sixteen teaspoons of sugar and that one bottom
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: m hm. This is very important for people to listen. Son.
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: Take the number on the back of the label of
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: grams of sugar divided by four. The number you get
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: is how many teaspoons you are consuming and one serving
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: of that product. M Because the reason is important because
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: to see when I do gain weight, Doc, it's when
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: I am I'm a big water drinker. When I go
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: to at home, I drink waiters are waitresses. They just
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: look at me. Go for real dude, I would just
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: drink water water field please, I mean big glasses of water.
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: And so I just love water and and so sometimes
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: I go in a restaurant and they say free lemonade refields. Okay,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: then I'm sitting up there drinking four to five glasses
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: of lemonade. And that's just like what you just say,
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: I'm just drinking. I'm just eating teaspoons of sugar when
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: I'm doing that, correct. Yeah, absolutely, And if you're gonna
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: do that, by the way, just as a tip. I
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: like lemonade too, by the way, But what I do
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: when I go to a restaurant get lemonade, I then
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: take my water and I dilute it so that it
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: reduces the concentration of a sugar that's in there. So
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: I diluted. So that's one thing people can do. But
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: when it comes to soda, the studies show that the
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: number one source of excess or added sugars come from
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: sugary drinks like soda. So I people, the first thing
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: you should do is this. If you drink let's just
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: say six cans, some people do, by the way, six
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: cans or soda the course of the day, divide it
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: in half. Okay, so reduce it down the three cans,
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: and then for the other three that you're taking away,
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: drink some carbonated or seltzer water and then squeeze some
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: shitchs in it, some lime or some lemon to give
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: you a little kick. But that is a that's something
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: you can do right away to cut down on some
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: of these excess sires. Because my wife she does decarbonated water.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: I n she come on me. I said, oh no, no,
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: don't no, your boy, don't do that. I'm gonna ride
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: this one outlet. See, here's the funny point about I'm
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: hearing all your advice, but I'm kind of like, Okay,
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: I'm fighting it. I'm fighting it. But you're telling the
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: truth though, you know, like dilute that good, that good lemonade.
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: He wants me to dilute that good, that good Chick
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: fil A lemonade. You want me to dilute that chickfilades good?
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: Isn't it? Be honest with your honestly hour, Go forget
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: the sandwich. I give me a large lemonade, and I
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: give me a large waffle five hop in my car.
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: I don't even catch up. They asked me for sauces
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: and men. Y'all don't know who you're talking to. Get
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: my womade and my five and I'm a food that
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: the duty. That's why I know I gotta get you back,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: because see, I want to bring this side. I think
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: through humor, through personality, people are listening more because we're
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: not asking people to suddenly become boring. You're not asking
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: people to say, hey, man, whoa whoa boa do this? Man,
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: I gotta change my luck. I can't watch TV no more.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: I can't do nothing. I can't eat good food no more.
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: That's not the true you're talking about. Hey, you want
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: people understand what's the different between brown sugar versus white sugar? Why?
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: There's why when you use honey the advantages and with
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: that transition, tell people the difference between brown sugar and
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: white sugar. And when you see, you know these different alternatives,
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: they're are listed in your books. They're are listed in
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: great detail in your book. Yeah, let me break it down.
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: So brown sugar and white sugar from a nutritional standpoint,
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: there is no difference. And that's what people don't understand.
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: Marketers and manufacturers and advertisers have done such a great
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: job of leading the public to believe that because it
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: says raw sugar or brown sugar that it's healthier. The
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: only thing making the sugar brown is that it has
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: molasses on it, and so sugar typically the regular cane sugar,
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: natural cane sugar is brown because of the molasses. And
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: what typically happens is through the through the process of
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: processing sugar, we then remove the molasses, we crystallize the
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: sugar cubes, and we get this this white crystal. This
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: not fine white crystal. So when people say, well, brown
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: sugar is better, no no, no, no, no. Brown sugar
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: and white sugar have the same nutritional value. But if
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: you want to try something different, you should try something
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: like organic stevia. Stevia comes from the stevia plant. It's
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: very sweet, sometimes sweeter than sugar, but just make sure
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: it's organic because sometimes manufactured or put a lot of
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: other chemicals in a mixed stevia product. The other thing
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: to try is honey. Honey fantastic. Yes, honey still is sweet.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: Honey does have some calories in it, but honey also
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: has other good nutritional values to it outside of the sweetness.
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: So the book goes through all the different types of sweeteners.
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: It talks about artificial sweeteners. I am not a fan
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: of artificial sweeteners because the word artificial to me means process,
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: means it could be damaging to your body. The studies
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: are mixed right now as to whether or not their
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: long term consequences. But I'd rather have a little bit
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: of the real stuff. They take the artificial stuff that's
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: been created in a lab. And I've just talked about
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: this honey right quick. I'm a big pancake guy, you know.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: I go to crack a barrel. Let me tell you something.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: Them become pancakes that they throw out the back of
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: that kitchen and put up that I give by three
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: or four of them, and I do it up right.
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: I accidentally put honey on my pancakes. And I would
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: have never I would have never ever put honey on
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: my pancakes. I can. I grabbed that maple syrup, my friend,
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: gotta be thick, you know, put a little better old top,
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: and I put it on that on those pancake. And
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: I looked at my wife, I go, what's that. She's like,
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: You're eating hone echo. Wow, It's pretty cool, pretty good, right,
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: pretty pretty good. It's pretty good, and so so I
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: say that to say that we will tell ourselves, we
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: will deny ourselves before even trying because I accidentally tried honey,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: it's changing my diet. Rashan, you have hit on such
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: an important point, not just about food but life in general,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: about particularly when I talked to African Americans, as I say,
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: you guys, don't say no yet based on the name
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: of it or based on the comfort, give it a try,
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: and people get surprised that once they try something they
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: thought they would never like, say, well, I don't want
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: to eat that keen? What's that keen? Walk? Then people
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: try it in a dish like what is this? I'm like,
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: that's keen hummas, I'm not gonna eat any hummus. They
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: try some hummus, They're like, whoa, this is good? What
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: is this hums? So one of the thing I try
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: to do all my books. The book has more than
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: forty recipes that has all kinds of snacks in there.
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: What I try to do with my books is to
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: open up people's palate to try something they have to
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: tried before. And I think that that's why I'm so
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: happy to have you on the show because I'm that person.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: I'm that person. I'm gonna in some cases the extreme because,
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: like I said, I don't think everybody rolling around with
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: a with a Crispy krean hotlight app on there and
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: it supposed to be one of these polished professionals. You
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, I gotta do and probably used it.
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: On Saturday when I landed in Atlantic, landed at nine o'clock,
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: hit that app light was all drove over. There has
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: some has some blueberry cake donbnuts coming down the line
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: and had the classic glaze. I said, give me six blaze,
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: give me too blueberry, and give me some two percent
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: milk your milk right and that, And that's the beauty
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: of of of doing it right and doing it wrong.
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: But in the process of hearing and reading your book,
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: I'm just telling you, guys, read this book. He's let
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: me know. Okay, there's a five week program. Let's talk
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: about that five week program and the first week of
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: getting started, let's talk about that. So it's five weeks,
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: every days stared out for you. So breakfast, snacks, launch, snack,
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: dinner with optional snack, all those things are laid out
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: for you with options. So if you're someone who doesn't
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: eat fish or meat or your vegetarians, there are enough
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: options you can swap in it out very easily. There's
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: also some exercise, so I give you some exercises you
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: can do. By the way, I never asked you to
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: work out for an hour in the gym. You don't
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: need work out for an hour in the gym. In fact,
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: mostly exercise you don't need a gym to be able
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: to complete them. So every day you will get your
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: meal plan, and if it's an exercise day, there are
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: rest days. If it's an exercise day, I'll give you
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: a suggestive amount of exercise and some exercises to do,
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: and you go day by day by that and what happens.
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: What you don't really, if you don't realize, is that
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: they don't have to count calories in my program. Nothing.
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: Why do you have to be able to measure or
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: look at something like if I say a cup or
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: half a cup, that's all you gotta do. But the
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: idea is this, over the course of five weeks, I'm
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: slowly weaning you off of excess circus. I'm not taking
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: you off this completely, by the way, I'm just lowering
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: it down. And the reason why I do it gradly
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: is because if you stop consuming sugar cold turkey. Hello,
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: we lost him? Cool, Well he just dropped off. About
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: to go through that big ending and then he just
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: dropped off. Okay, cool, let me just wrap this over
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: real quick. Dr Yn Smith was basically what he's saying
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: is that in this book The Blaster Sugar Out, his
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: brother did that. He dropped cold turkey and it just
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: really affected his body. So he's talking from a lane
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: of experience, a lane of understanding that you can't do anything.
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: And I've done that. I've just stopped, you know, just
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: stopped you those doughnuts that you've heard me talk about
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: for the last thirty minutes on the air with dr
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: Yn Smith. All these things I've done and guess what
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: is not good? To do it that way? You have
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: to have a plan, you have to have a process.
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: You have to be able to talk to people to
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: be able to say this is how it is supposed
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: to be done. And that's what Dr N Smith is saying.
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: Dr N Smith is saying right now? Is he back
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: on the line, Doctor, You're back. You're about the end
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: that you you you you rolling up to a big
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: moment and then you then you left me, so I
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: was saying. So I'm saying, what happens is that every
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: day you don't go through the withdrawal because I slowly
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: reduced your sugar and you don't have that rebound that
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: people do who cut off cold turkey, and you don't
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: have those urges because you're still getting sugar us not
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: too much. And that's really important because, like I was saying,
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: in your book, you talk about your twin brother who
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: did that, and I really made him miserable, you know,
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: made him made his days longer, and his energy was
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: bad because he did that and and and not he
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: stopped cold turkey. And that's not small. You know, we're
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: not trying. You know this ain't buy no drug. You
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: know you're over there guard. You know. It's just about
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: just about slowing it down. And I've done the cold
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: Turkey thing, cold turkey too, And what happens is I
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: would start vibrating. You know, I'll get nervous a lot
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: because my nervous jittery, jittery. So I know for a
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: fact what he's saying. That's why it's important to buy
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: this book, is it tells you how to do it correctly.
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: He's trying to wean you all, trying to not drastically
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: change your diet, but educate you and change your diet
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: so you can learn and then feel comfortable and strong
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: every day. Dr Smith, it's been amazing, man. I appreciate
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: you coming on the show. Any any part in words
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: where you get out of here, my friend. Absolutely, I
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: want to say this. And plus Americans who are type
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: two diabetics, there are eighty six million Americans who are
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: pre diabetic. I mean they're on the verge of diabetes.
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: With my plan Blast to Sugar Out, we were able
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: to reduce people's blood sugars by thirty percent. People are
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: coming off of their their medications. They are preventing diabetes
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: from happening. So this is not just a book for diabetics.
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: This is a book for all of us, myself included,
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: because all of us are eating too much sugar. We
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: all need to drop our blood sugar levels and once
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: you do that, life will never be the same. Join

- 1:19:19Speaker 1: My next guest is a very just a very popular
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: seeing in political contributor and hopefully of the recurring CNN
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: Prime Time special The Messy Truth. He's a new book
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: autum Beyond the Messy Truth, How we come apart, How
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: we came apart, and how we come together. Please welcome
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: to Money Making Conversation. Van Jones, My man, I know
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: I've had you on my radio show with Steve Harvey.
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: Several times, and I appreciate you calling it on my
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: show because I'm big fan of Big Fan, Big Fan,
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: And I read the book and let's let's uh, but
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: before we get into the book, let's talk about you.
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: You know, your growth as a as a brand, your
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: growth as a person that because he kind of like,
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: was similar when Steve and I was in New York
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: in two thousand and five and I thought, I started
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: seeing you more and more on TV, growing as a
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: brand and creating a voice out there. What was the
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: goal when? When? When when individuals were bringing you on
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: the on TV asking your opinions, was there a goal
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: behind it? Or you just taking advantage of the media opportunity. Well,
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: you know, I've been a committed justice activists for twenty
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: five years or more. I was born in rural West Tennessee.
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: I grew up on the edge of a small town.
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: I wound up going to Yale for law school, so
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: that was a big leap. I was the first want
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: of my family to go to a law school in
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: any Ivy League institution. And when I got out in
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: the early nineties and police brutality was off the hook,
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: prison boom was going down. They were doubling the number
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: of people behind bars and destroying our communities. And so
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: I spent ten fifteen years on the front lines as
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: an activist with a law degree, trying to do something
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: about police brutality. We we wound up closing some youth
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: prisons and um and and creating some job programs for
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: young people, especially in the solar industry. And that's how
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: I wound up working for President Obama as his special
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: advisor on green jobs and clean energy. And when the
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: right wing came after me for having been such a
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: left wing radical in my in my past, um, I
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: wound up as many people do when they leave government.
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: I wound up showing up on TV a little bit
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: and wound up with what they roll at CNN, right.
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: And with that, with that being said, you know your
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: fantastic role, and I've seen you. Now this to me,
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: I'm asking some just some artists, coution observational question. I
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: got cautious. I'm gonna ask you about the book and
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: things like that, because I've read the book. But I
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: gotta ask observational question because I when I see an
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: individual like it, because you're such a passionate guy. You are,
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: You're one of these guys who wears your feelings on
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: your sleeve, as they say, correct because I see it now.
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: Is that good or bad? Well? Um, it depends. Um
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: I don't think. I think we live in an era
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: where credibility used to be the most important thing, but
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: now I think authenticity is the most important things. And
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: you know Hillary Clinton was very credible that many people
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: didn't think that she was authentic enough. Uh. Donald Trump
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: completely not credible. But he's an authentic If you're gonna
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: be a fool, he's an authentic fool, consistent about it.
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: Because so you know I am. You know, what you
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: see with me is what you get. I love my people,
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: I love all oppressed mistreated people. I'm not a Democratic
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: Party hack. And the Democrats are wrong. I won't call
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: them wrong. And the Republicans get something right every now
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: and again. I'll get them them some credit too. But um,
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: you know I can't. I can't be something. I'm not
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: the interesting thing. When the when the idea of coming
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: on my show, because my show is about its money
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: making conversations about entrepreneurship about it and it's not a
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: political show. And and so I all wanted to get
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: that clear of my staff. But then when he sent
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: me the book, I'm gonna read this quote that you
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: had that let me know that I had to have
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: you on the show. And this is a Nelson Mandela
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: quote that's in his book, and it reads, I have
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: fought against white domination, this is said by Nelson Mandela,
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: and have fought against black domination. I have cherished the
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: ideal of democratic and free society in which all persons
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: live together in harmony and will equal opportunities. It is
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: an idea which I hope to live for and to achieve,
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: but if needs be, is an ideal for which I
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: am prepared to die. That was stated by Nelson Mandela
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: on trial facing possible execution, April twenty four. That quote,
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: to me, let me know. This is a book not
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: trying to blast one side, not trying to blast the
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: other side, but trying to say, I'm gonna tell both
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: sides of the story and then then here's a plan
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: that we can come together. Is that correct? Well, you
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: said a better than I can say for myself. If
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: that really is um. The purpose of my book is
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: called Beyond the Messy Truth. How we came apart and
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: how we come together, and you know, it's tough love
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: for both political parties because you know, even even though
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: I'm I'm anti Trump, um, you know, the Democrats have
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: not been perfect by any stretch, and we have to
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: really look in the mirror and you know, across the
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: board to figure out how we can do something. A
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: whole third of the book is nothing but resources, um.
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: You know, books, documentaries, organizations. You can join, left or right, Republican, Democrat, black, white, white,
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: or Latino, um, because we all just have to get
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: me more involved. We need better conservatives, we need better
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: progressive We need you know, we need everybody to to
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: up level because the direction that we're headed in is
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: so negative and so nasty. We gotta messed around not
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: even have a country. And that's very true. And I
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: think that's that's why we read they quote because you know,
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: because some people can you know that, because because the
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: media paints their pictures. You know, boxes over here got
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: this point of view. And everybody over there is supposed
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: to be news at CNN and supposed to be anti
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: Trump over CNN, they will not. But your book, I
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: wanted to everybody who listened to the show shows also
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: heard on our heart radio podcast as well to millions
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: of other people. But I wanted to let everybody know
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: that this quote is the first thing they caught my attention.
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: And then when I went through the book and when
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: you did an example of the liberal family and you
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: did an example of the conservative family, it was it
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: really laid the picture about you kind of say, this
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: is why we got in trouble. You know, this is
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: this would lead to this problem if you if you
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: upset by why Trump won this election, let me tell
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: you what happened. And that's what you laid the groundwork.
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: You you kind of like, this is what happened, so
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: before you get mad and act like it was by accident,
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: the groundwork was laid, you know, when the housing crisis
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: of two thousand and eight, you know the groundworker lad
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: when you know when Bill Clinton was in office and
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: he was baby in Wall Street and then he was
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: turning around creating these prison system where it just just
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: put an African American man in jail. And that's really
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: what you were talking to. You know, you talk about
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: Ralf Nato, you talk about how the impact of Bernie
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: Sanders was he was he another version of Raf Nader.
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: Way back then, and all. This was just a really
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: not so much a complex version, but a good read
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: that really enlightened me but also confirmed a lot of
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: things that I knew. But here and here, and you
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: write it in such great detail and what's such great
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: passion and motion. I was uplifted by your book, my friend. Well, look,
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: I appreciate that. And you know when when I wrote
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: the book, and know, it's called Beyond the Messy Truth
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: um for a reason, you know, because the truth is
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: messy if you really anytime somebody come and tell you
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: a story and it's all they're perfect, and everything they
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: did was correct, and there's other person. Man, they just
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: the devil. You know they're lying because you never you know,
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: the truth is always messy. It's always well, you know,
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: I could have done this, but she didn't have to
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: do that. And you know, well sure, you know, I
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: wish I had and said this now, but I did,
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: and then we stuck with that. But but then then
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: they did this. Now somebody is telling you the truth
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: because it's messy, they're putting their mess on the table
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: well as the other person's math. And that's and and
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: that's what I just feel like we need more of
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: that well, you know, that's that they were messy. That's
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: that's that's the neighborhood turn. You're just missy. You're just
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: always up in somebody's face. Man, mess messy, MESSI messy.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: That's why I really that's why I knew you from
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: the South, you know, Jackson, Jackson Tendnessee South because we
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: used to worry messy. But but when people see it
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: out there, that that the urban spin on messy is
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: basically what you're talking about. This is the adjective. It's
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: how people just take what they want to say and
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: how they spin it and use it to their advantage.
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: That's not what this book is about. This book is
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: an information book, and I just want to sell my
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: side because you know, I can let you come on
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: the show and you can talk about at certain levels.
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: But they also got to know that I read the
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: book and how it affected me. I think that's important. Man.
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: Well look, I appreciate that, and I hope that people
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: who are listening will um, you know, we'll we'll get
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: this local order this book. We'll find this book beyond
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: the messy truth because there's so much upset. People are
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: just upset. I know people I think. They get up
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: in the morning, they look at their phone and then
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: they look at you know, well he, you know, Donald
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: Trump tweeted this, and then they spend the whole day
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: just miserable and mad and they do. What they don't
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: understand is that's a part of his plan and his
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: strategy to keep everybody distracted and divided. And the problem
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: is not that we have you know, too many bad
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: people doing bad things. We have too many good people,
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: millions and millions, tens of millions more good people who
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: just don't know what to do at all. And that's
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: the real problem is that we're trying to empower people.
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: And you know, I know this show is for people
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: who are looking to make money. Part of the thing
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: that I wanted to say at the outset was that
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: you need a stable political and legal environment to make money.
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: Democracies can fail, and whenever you've seen a failed state
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: or failed democracy, you nobody's making me money except maybe
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: the arms, you know, dealers. But you know, what we
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: have to do is to be whole people. We need
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: to be you know, making money. We need to be
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: making a difference as well. We need to be good
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: consumers and good entrepreneurs. We also need to be good
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: community members and citizens as well. And right now I
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: think that both sides are so comfortable just pointing out
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: the other person's laws. You know, it's almost become a
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: politics of accusation and no confession. It's all projection as
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: of what you did wrong, no reflection on what I
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: could have done better, and that that you can't even
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: have a family that way, You can't even have a
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: kindergarten class that way. And we're trying to have a
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: whole country that way. It's not gonna work. And so
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: and the business leaders honestly need to be the one
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: stepping up to the plate even more, not necessarily running
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: for office, but just you know, up leveling and saying, hey, listen, um,
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: you know America is about the business of business of
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: anything else, and y'all about to mess around here and
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: make it nobody can get ahead because you know, it's
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: just so negative, it's so nasty. Right now, that's painful.
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: I will be right back. I'm gonna take a break
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: and hold on, um Van, because I want to talk
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: about you got arrested in eighteen eighty three. That shock,
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: you know, when you know, no justice, no peace. I
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: was in I was in l a at n eighteen
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: eighty two when they dropped off with Rotten the Key
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: that had a profiled effect on you and your political views. Today,
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: I want to talk about that Brights family, you know,
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: that that liberal family, when you realized that they suddenly
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: had conservative values because He's what they just wanted the job, Man,
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: they wanted the job. We've been right back with Man
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: seeing their contributor. I'll tell you I love this dude.
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: I'm happy to spend six times to call my show
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: more with money making conversations. We'll be right back Sean McDonald. Hi,
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: this for Sean McDonald. I'm back on whole is my
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: man Van Jones, CNN contributor. His latest book. His latest
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: book is Beyond the Messy Troup. How We Came Apart,
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: How We Came Together. It's now since October tenth. I
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: got him on the phone right now and we're gonna
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: discuss that in disappoint How you doing, Van? Very good?
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: Very good? But how are you pretty good? I appreciate
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: you now read this book and a good read. Learned
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: a lot because you break it down in chapters. You
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: you label, you label people liberals you label conservatives, you said,
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: this is what just what's wrong, and this is how
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: we can fix liberal hear me out, you go with
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: the conservative this is who you are, you label them,
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: and you said, this is how we can fix it.
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: And then you talk about how we can come together,
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: and you lay out different different informational ports that they
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: can go, websites, all that stuff they can go to
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: get information, to get the truth. Because that's what this
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: book is all about, is the truth correct absolutely um.
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: And and you know it's some of these issues that
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: we forget. Um. Look, there's some issues we just gotta
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: fight over. I mean, we just there's not enough agreement.
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: There's and and people are too passionate on either side.
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: I'm never gonna, uh, you know, abandoned the Muslims in America.
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: American some of the best Americans that we have. I mean,
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: they got the lowest crime rate, the lowest divorce rate,
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: the highest educational attainment for women in many cases, entrepreneurship.
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: I mean every muzzle might know got a job, of
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: college degree or a business. I don't know why we're
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: supposed to be mad at them. So I'm never gonna
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: be gonna back off defending Muslims or Dreamers or l
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: g B t Q or Black Lives Matter, and we're
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: just not gonna agree on that across these different divides,
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: but there are. But so we have to fight. But
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: you can't only fight and still have a country. Even
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: if you're gonna fight from nine to noon, you should
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: find something between you know, noon and one to work
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: on together to make something positive happen for the country. So,
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: you know, you have this addiction crisis across the country,
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: especially these opioid pain killers that people are just dropping
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: like flies. And you know, my good friend Prince of
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: the late rock star he was killed, um by his
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: addiction to opioids. And yet coal miners are dying of
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: the same thing. We should be able to come together
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: behind stuff like that. But but but corporations are selling
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: it and it's legal. Yeah. Well, and and that's the thing.
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: We have some ideas in the book though that would
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: come up with the safer alternatives to help people get
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: off that stuff, um and and and not do the
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: detox and die thing, because a lot of people they
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: do the detox thing, but there's no supportive drugs, you know,
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: to help them stay off and get off in a
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: safe way, and they wind up relapsing and they overdose
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: because that old dose is too high form. Now these
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: are type of things is real. See, I'm I'm dealing
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: with real stuff. I'm not dealing with tweets. I'm dealing
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: with real life issues that people need to be focused on. You.
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: We've got too many funerals in America for dumb reasons,
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: and we need to be able to no matter how mad.
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: I am um at Donald Trump, and I'm mad at
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: him every day, and you get mad, you get mad,
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: I get mad. I get mad. But at the same time,
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: you know, Donald Trump's wanted his closest advisors and new
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: grige and you you see in the book I talked
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: about how I work with newt on opioids. I work
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: with newt on um the criminal justice reform, you know,
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: And you know, it used to be the case that
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: you could you fight where you don't agree, and you
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: work together where you do agree. Now we fight where
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: we don't agree and we won't even speak, so we
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: can't work where we do agree. And that's that's and
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: that really is the problem. So I wouldn't get a
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: quicker feedback because I thought this is important to you
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: book twenty five years ago, you know the Rodney King video,
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: because that had a profound effect, and that also led
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: to you doing a peaceful march at Dolores Park and
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: and then you was why am I being arrested? It's peaceful,
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: so and that kind of like set the stage a
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: little bit. This is a lots of different I wok.
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: It's a lot of different things in life to make
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: who you are today. But that was a profound moment
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: in the book, and it was a relatable moment for
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: me because I was living in l A at the
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: time and I was in the heart of it. I
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: saw it live. I drove around it, I drove through
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: the community's black home signs were popping up on all
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: these business so they wouldn't be impacted by any damage.
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: And it was really crazy. And but you were not there,
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: so I WI wanted to see how it affected you.
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: And I was right in this to say the jouncle
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: I was in the war zone. Well, you know, I
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: was in northern California, um that spring of UM and
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: you know, um, I was a young, idealistic law student
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: and I have working for a civil rights organization and
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: some of the you know, they were even though you
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: were in the middle of everything in l A. There
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: were rallies and protests all across the country, maybe all
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: around the world behind Rodney King, because you know, you
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: have un armed black man being beaten in videotape, will
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: being beaten by the cops in videotape. Back then, videotape
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: was hard to come by. It wasn't right now everybody
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: got a phone, I mean you know that it was.
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: It had never been captured before what we were going through,
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: and we just knew these cops were gonna go to jail,
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: and none of them went to jail. So people took
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: to the streets. And I was in the Bay Area
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: and had been asked by my boss to go and
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: just do legal observation and make sure the cops were
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: being the rules. And nothing got in and they slept
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: everybody up, included my little you know, educated I thought
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: I was above it all. No justice, no piece, no justice,
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: no piece exactly. And then I wasn't even yet and
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: I was just walking alongside with my little clip forward,
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: trying to take note and um, then I looked around,
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: I said, Jesus, then you know my my uh communities,
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: free speech rights are being trampled on. Nobody do anything violent,
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: um in in in you know that march, And it
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: just underscored to me the need to work on criminal
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: justice and policing issues. And that's really what I focused on,
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: and and I learned so much doing that, because when
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: you're working on policing issues and criminal justice, you really
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: have to work at the grassroots level. Most top level
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: politicians are not going to deal with you. And so
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: you're gonna be dealing with grandmama's and preachers and and
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: youths and other folks until you get some victories going
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: and and and and I'll never forget what it's like
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: when you're fighting the whole system with just you know,
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: a few allies. Then to be able to win sometimes
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: and just shows you the power of the people. Man.
