- 0:58can all learn And that's what the paws cast is all about.
- 1:08Hey friends, Rachel here and I've got a great great very
- 1:12relevant topic for I believe everyone out there as a working
- 1:16parent and also who is wanting to maybe shift the boundaries of
- 1:24how you are working. Maybe a remoting maybe your
- 1:27hybrid working, or maybe even in the office but for whatever
- 1:30reason you are feeling like you are tethered not just to your
- 1:34devices but maybe to your toddler.
- 1:39And so I'm laughing because Heather to your toddler.
- 1:42I've never said that before. But gosh, I mean well who isn't
- 1:44Tethered to their toddler? But when you need to get work
- 1:46done, maybe and you're working from home, this could be an
- 1:49issue. So today's topic, I think we'll
- 1:52be hitting home with so many of us who have kids at home, which
- 1:55is really all about how to do what you need to do, how to take
- 2:01care of responsibilities while feeling Tethered to your toddler
- 2:04feeling, tether to whatever obligations you have.
- 2:07They might be Children, they might be your pets, but the
- 2:10reality is they're interrupting or disrupting the time that you
- 2:13need for being successful and doing what you need to do at
- 2:17work. Let's get into it.
- 2:23Okay, so I had a situation with a client and I want to share a
- 2:28little bit more context where is was someone who's working from
- 2:31home, doing a great job at her workplace and has a three year
- 2:36old has a three year old toddler who is interrupting the day and
- 2:40it just feels hard and challenging because the things
- 2:43that need to get done are not getting done.
- 2:46But yet here she is as a really awesome Mom, who wants to A
- 2:51server child who wants to do things and yet it's getting in
- 2:54the way of what needs to get done.
- 2:57So we had a conversation about this and the reality is, if you
- 3:01were to take a step back and think objectively about this,
- 3:04what's really going on, right? And maybe, you know, someone in
- 3:06the situation or maybe you've been in this situation or maybe
- 3:09this is your situation right now, right?
- 3:11Som some related way. Think about toddlers, think
- 3:15about a three-year-old or even like a two-year-old or even a
- 3:19little older than a three-year-old.
- 3:20You know what, what are they all about?
- 3:23What are they like to do? You might be thinking about it
- 3:27and you don't even need to think too hard.
- 3:28The first thing this person said to me was Tantrums she New York
- 3:32child really well and yes, ding. Ding.
- 3:35Ding so toddlers. All about testing the
- 3:38boundaries, okay? Toddlers is part of Child
- 3:41Development and formation are literally Testing out their
- 3:46bonds and individuating from their primary, caretaker, right?
- 3:52This is all going back to childhood development and really
- 3:57formation, which is interesting and itself but really there's no
- 4:03shortage of testing those boundaries and we all know that
- 4:06right we've seen three year olds in action and they are Fierce.
- 4:10They want to get their way whether it's the highway or no
- 4:13way or Airway or any, which way, right?
- 4:17So they're going to do what they do, no matter what you try to
- 4:21do, right? So it was very interesting as we
- 4:23continue it continued the conversation, what?
- 4:25We'll call her Sally occurred to Sally that.
- 4:29Okay? Maybe there's some things that
- 4:31need to shift, and that's exactly it.
- 4:34So, knowing our beloved toddlers.
- 4:37Those dear children in our lives and maybe you've got a niece or
- 4:42nephew maybe sent your child, but At the idea.
- 4:44There's this there's this pattern of testing the
- 4:47boundaries so as an adult who is clearly needing responsibilities
- 4:53done and past to complete, we need to change it up so that the
- 4:58boundaries stay in place while they're getting tested.
- 5:01Okay, so what could you do? What could be different for you?
- 5:05If you are looking for, maybe getting your stuff done and
- 5:08maybe you're working from home, or maybe it's the holidays right
- 5:10now, for example, and there's a struggle Google to get the stuff
- 5:16done because you got a million other things, you have to do
- 5:18like shopping for gifts and hiding the gifts and cooking for
- 5:22people and hosting relatives or traveling.
- 5:24I mean, there's so many things, it tends to be a stressful time.
- 5:28It doesn't have to be though. So the reality is we need to
- 5:32make a decision and we meaning you or whomever has to change up
- 5:38the game a little bit to create new rules for this time period.
- 5:41They may not need to last forever because this The phase
- 5:44right being three doesn't last forever, or being for maybe it's
- 5:48even seven years old, whatever. Whatever the case is, we need to
- 5:52create the new boundaries. So what could you do
- 5:55differently? And this is where we need to
- 5:56make the choice that we want to do things differently.
- 6:00And Sally's case there was a little hesitation and and the
- 6:04hesitation was around not being there for her child naturally.
- 6:08She wants to be there. She's the mom.
- 6:10Like, of course, she wants to be there but the reality is becomes
- 6:15frayed as potentially. The bonding can get disrupted
- 6:23when we have other obligations, right?
- 6:24So that's the Work World, right? Being being a leader at work,
- 6:28means I need to get my stuff done and I also need to show up
- 6:31for my family and my children. So we brainstorm some options
- 6:36and I think that really it comes down to two things.
- 6:40One is the choice, right? So the first thing is, you know,
- 6:42you need to do something different because the You've got
- 6:44right now whether it's the child, literally pulling at your
- 6:47pant leg, for whatever the moment of the day is that they
- 6:51need attention for right because that's their job.
- 6:53Again, there's three other testing these boundaries and
- 6:55being little humans we can we can kind of delight in that as
- 7:00well, right? Even though it can be the
- 7:01umpteenth time of the day that they're trying this, but
- 7:04something needs to change. So, one is that mental decision
- 7:08to say, okay, you know what, I can't keep doing this, this
- 7:10isn't working for me. What am I willing to implement
- 7:13now, Now, and it may not be forever, but it might be for
- 7:16these for these couple months and this person did have a,
- 7:19like, a caretaker and someone to help with them.
- 7:22So really? That was a great start.
- 7:25Obviously like there's someone there and you couldn't really
- 7:27work at all, my guess is, if there wasn't anyone there.
- 7:31So the first thing is to make that choice and say, you know
- 7:33what, I gotta I got to be a little more effective with my
- 7:37boundaries. Doesn't mean you're a critic
- 7:39about yourself. You don't pass the judgement,
- 7:41right? These are the traps, these
- 7:42pitfalls we can fall into Right? The fixed mindset of laying like
- 7:46such a bad parent, like such a shaming ourselves, like that's
- 7:49not going to serve you. Imagine, you're the kind parent,
- 7:53the best friend that is speaking to you as a peer and saying, you
- 7:56know what? You know what.
- 7:58Like here's what I think will work.
- 7:59Why don't you? If you consider decks, have you
- 8:02considered working at the basement desk?
- 8:04That might need a little beautification, maybe I'll bring
- 8:07down a picture. I spruced it up with some
- 8:08holiday Glam, right? Like we need to make it fun for
- 8:11ourselves and this was an option.
- 8:13We talked. About right?
- 8:14That could be pretty cool. Maybe you can get out of the
- 8:17house for a couple hours and it doesn't need to start with
- 8:20everyday or a huge eight-hour day out of the house.
- 8:23This was another option we talked about, right?
- 8:25You're changing the system so that the boundary and in the
- 8:29environment can be different so that you can be successful
- 8:33because this is the part that needs to change its actually
- 8:36about our own individual responses to a stress system.
- 8:40And in that case it might be us like our nervous system is a
- 8:43little stressed out. I'm feeling tethered and pulled
- 8:46and guilty like all these things that could be going on.
- 8:48So the reality is okay. That's not effective, that's not
- 8:52helping me much and probably not my child much, because then
- 8:55they're confused. I can can, I can't be with them,
- 8:57cannot be with them, but the key is to actually give yourself
- 9:00some self-love and I say self-love, meaning care,
- 9:05self-care and and and their self-respect to actually say,
- 9:10okay, here's what I know I need, this is what really served me.
- 9:14I got to get out of the house, maybe it's for 10:00 to 2:00
- 9:17p.m. on my busy day on Monday because I know that starts me
- 9:20off for the week. I can get a clean slate and I'm
- 9:24going to set expectations and keep myself accountable.
- 9:28Notice a couple things that I just said there, right?
- 9:30Like we can't just go ahead and do it without some planning.
- 9:33Setting expectations is a super super underrated skill, right?
- 9:39Because it takes for communication and it takes being
- 9:41clear with what you want. And Those expectations so others
- 9:45can support you, right? So maybe she tells her caretaker
- 9:50hey on Monday next week. I'm out of the house from 10 to
- 9:532. She might even tell her son and
- 9:55that was something we also discussed because maybe he can
- 9:58prepare a little bit more. And it's not just some kind of
- 10:02release different situation that will also make things worse for
- 10:05him in the short term, right? Like maybe there's a bigger
- 10:07tantrum, he'd have. So she really liked that idea
- 10:10and is going to be sharing that with her.
- 10:14Her son and her caretaker, she's going to calendar it in her
- 10:18appointment book. Because that's what's so
- 10:19important is when we write things down, not only are we 30
- 10:24percent more likely to meet those goals.
- 10:27But, and I talked about this in the journaling, as a superpower
- 10:30Episode. By the way, just, just a recent
- 10:33episode here, where you're telling your brain, it's
- 10:38important when you write something down.
- 10:40So you're actually adding significance to it, which is why
- 10:43when we calendar. He's actually can be more likely
- 10:46to happen, whether that's your digital calendar or your written
- 10:49calendar, whatever works for you.
- 10:51Okay. So what are you getting from
- 10:53this? What do you what we know?
- 10:55What are your takeaways? Because this is an important
- 10:57topic where a lot of times our boundaries get a little flimsy
- 11:01little little flimsy right round the edges they might seep into
- 11:06areas that we kind of make excuses for like oh it's just
- 11:09another Tuesday and it's the end of the year so you know I don't
- 11:14think I really need to get this done.
- 11:16I'm sure it could slip till January, I mean, maybe that's a
- 11:19luxury for you. But for most of us, it's easy to
- 11:22slip. It's a slippery slope as I like
- 11:24to say. So know that when you start to
- 11:27feel like you're getting and cringed on Fringe and cringed, I
- 11:31don't know if that's a word in infringed upon your boundaries
- 11:34and you're noticing maybe that overwhelm like feeling
- 11:37overwhelmed meaning sticky, like, oh, I don't know if I
- 11:41should do this or I don't want to be on this.
- 11:44Project at this time because I don't think I'm going to get it
- 11:46done and then your attention is divided.
- 11:49You're literally multitasking, right?
- 11:50Maybe it's home, responsibilities like a toddler,
- 11:53maybe it's a teenager. Maybe it's needing cat or two
- 11:58and a pet rabbit. Maybe, I'm just making these
- 12:01things up as examples. Hopefully, you see my humor in
- 12:03there? You know, it's all I meant in
- 12:05just and good faith because the idea is that all of those
- 12:11literally are the same as multitasking in your brain.
- 12:14And and fun fact about multitasking.
- 12:17I'm sure you probably have a judgment about multitasking
- 12:20which is it's actually leads to being less productive.
- 12:26And it decreases your IQ by 10% because our brains are not
- 12:31designed to be like, what's the words process?
- 12:35Like the Dual processors? I'm not the engineer, my husband
- 12:38is, but yeah. Dual processing.
- 12:41So you're like, you know, having two modes at the same time like
- 12:43our brains Are One processor and we all kind of know this, right?
- 12:46Like when we switch from email it at, we have to like spend 15
- 12:51minutes every time that get back into our Rhythm and what we're
- 12:54doing. And so I, you know, Speak for a
- 12:56long time on that, maybe that'll be a separate episode.
- 12:58Actually, there we go. We just got a new episode but
- 13:02you know, the reality is, how do you set yourself up for success?
- 13:06And I think the first one, the first step is awareness right as
- 13:08a highly emotional intelligent leader.
- 13:10You're aware that something needs to change and this is
- 13:13where coaching can be great because you may not know what it
- 13:15is or how to do it. But, you know, at least there's
- 13:18this awareness that it's not working anymore and that's the
- 13:22beauty of doing something different.
- 13:24But it takes the awareness First, it takes the courage to
- 13:27change it, right? So you're going up against my
- 13:30guesses patterns, you've had for a long time that feel really set
- 13:34in their ways, right? Or even beliefs that are
- 13:37informing those patterns that are unconscious.
- 13:40All right man our brains are unconscious 95% of the time as I
- 13:44was recently reminded. So all of this to say that we
- 13:48can set ourselves up boundaries limits and expectations need to
- 13:51be Revisited and set up again and don't think of it.
- 13:55You need to please everybody or say yes to all these things
- 13:59outside of yourself. And remember in this case you
- 14:02know I made this example with a toddler toddler the extreme
- 14:04example, right? Like they're just a one-way
- 14:07street, they're going to do what they do and throw the Tantrum
- 14:11because that's their job. This is to differentiate an
- 14:15individuate from their primary caretaker.
- 14:18Well yeah. So this is a big topic and think
- 14:21about your world you know what could you revisit for your
- 14:23boundaries? What might need a little more.
- 14:25Or structure or a new and improved boundary for yourself
- 14:30that could work and it will take effort, right?
- 14:32That's the hard part, it means you do something different.
- 14:35But guess what? I love this part about it.
- 14:38It will set you up for Success. You will have more success.
- 14:42You will feel more confident because you're doing what you
- 14:45need to do in the world on your terms.
- 14:47And that to me is a huge self-care move in service to
- 14:53everything that's going for you and that could Be even better.
- 14:56Because if you're not taking care of you, it's no one else's
- 14:59job. But yourself, right?
- 15:01And so you can take care of a toddler and yourself at the same
- 15:04time. It's totally possible, but it
- 15:06requires boundaries. All right, everyone.
- 15:09I hope you enjoyed this episode on what to do, when boundaries,
- 15:13feel a little shaky and how you can shift that as a high EQ
- 15:18leader, as someone who's aware, and someone who is willing to
- 15:21take the risk to do something different in service to your
- 15:25doing, right? That's what we're talking about
- 15:27here, being in service to your doing there.
- 15:29For you feel better, you bring more joy and fulfillment to you,
- 15:32which is a ripple effect in your whole family, in your whole life
- 15:35and at work with your peers and your colleagues.
- 15:38And your team and you even your managers have a great day and so
- 15:42glad you're here. Thanks have fun with those
