- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's word together. In Luke Chapter 11, one of Jesus
- 0:46disciples asked the Lord to teach him and the other
- 0:48disciples how to pray. What follows is 1 version of
- 0:52what we've come to know as the Lord's Prayer.
- 0:54Listen to what Jesus prays. Father hallowed be your name,
- 0:59your Kingdom come. Give us each day Our Daily Bread
- 1:03and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves.
- 1:06Also forgive everyone who is indebted to us and lead us not
- 1:09into temptation. Jesus prays intimately to the
- 1:14Father. He sets as his highest desire
- 1:17that the name of God would be hallowed, revered, viewed as
- 1:21holy. He wants God to get the glory he
- 1:24deserves. Before Jesus outlines any of his
- 1:27needs or even talks about himself at all, his desire is
- 1:31for the fame and honour of the name of God.
- 1:35This is the natural result of real relationship with the holy,
- 1:39holy, holy God. When we see God rightly, we will
- 1:43desire that all the world see him rightly.
- 1:48Then Jesus prays that God's Kingdom would come, that he
- 1:51would institute his rule on earth, that he would bring to
- 1:54fruition all of his promises. Now we know what it would cost
- 1:58Jesus for God's name to be hallowed and God's Kingdom to
- 2:02come, His very life on the cross.
- 2:05None the less, Jesus boldly prays for God's glory and reign.
- 2:11It is at this point in the prayer that Jesus expresses
- 2:13real, tangible need, and it's here that I want us to spend the
- 2:17rest of our time together. He prays give us each day Our
- 2:21Daily Bread. Jesus here is acknowledging that
- 2:24our provision is from the Lord. What is amazing here is the
- 2:28timing of that provision from the Lord.
- 2:30Give us each day Our Daily Bread.
- 2:35Jesus is not here asking for a once for all provision from the
- 2:38Lord. He is not asking that God fill
- 2:40him up and keep him full forever, though God is certainly
- 2:44powerful enough to work like that.
- 2:46No, Jesus prays for daily provision.
- 2:49Implied in this request is the reality that we are a needy
- 2:52people, and that need is one that must continually be met,
- 2:57not just once, but over and over and over.
- 3:01Think about that. God could have made us so that
- 3:04our meals would sustain us for days or weeks on end.
- 3:07He could have made us like bears that are able to hibernate
- 3:10seasonally and survive on what they've already eaten.
- 3:13He could have made us like some snakes whose metabolism slows
- 3:16dramatically after a large meal. He could have made us like
- 3:19Penguins or camels whose fat reserves can keep them running
- 3:23for weeks or months on end without another meal.
- 3:26But no. By and large, God made humanity
- 3:29to have a daily need for food. We every day must grapple with
- 3:33the fact that we are not God. We every day must acknowledge
- 3:37that we cannot sustain ourselves.
- 3:40We every day must recognize that we have need.
- 3:44And So what do we do? We pray, we come to the God who
- 3:49needs nothing, the God who does not tire or hunger, and we ask
- 3:54him to do again what he has done so many times before.
- 3:57Provide Our Daily Bread, give us food for our bodies.
- 4:02And not just that, this physical need points to the deeper
- 4:06reality that we need not just bodily sustenance, but spiritual
- 4:10sustenance. We need God not just to satisfy
- 4:13our bellies, but to satisfy our very souls.
- 4:17And just like we are forced daily to recognize our
- 4:19dependence, our lack, we must daily come to the Lord and
- 4:24recognize that apart from the bread of life, apart from being
- 4:27fed in the deepest parts of our being by God Himself, we are
- 4:31lost. So pray this Lord's Prayer
- 4:34today. Seek God's glory, seek His name,
- 4:37seek His Kingdom, and acknowledge before Him that we
- 4:41are in utter, desperate need of Him, not just today, not just
- 4:46once, but each and every day, and receive from Him your daily
- 4:51bread, both for your body and for your soul.
