- 1:56Speaker 1: show today, we'll be discussing all of these things and
- 1:58Speaker 1: his new book rates his him in the Eyes of
- 2:00Speaker 1: the Child, Please welcome. I want to call him a friend, brother.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I want to call him a good friend who he's
- 2:04Speaker 1: working with money making conversation. Matthew knows. Hey, roche Sean,
- 2:08Speaker 1: can you hear me better? Wow? Matthew, what about it? Man? Wow?
- 2:16Speaker 1: I love you man, because we got something to talk about. Man.
- 2:19Speaker 1: First of all, congratulations on who you are. Okay, well,
- 2:23Speaker 1: thank you, thank you a lot. Man. You know, I
- 2:26Speaker 1: have a great team of people, great artists, um, and
- 2:29Speaker 1: it takes a team to to really help the success
- 2:32Speaker 1: that we've had. And I'm gonna tell you something I
- 2:34Speaker 1: learned that I learned that. Um. You know, you can,
- 2:36Speaker 1: you can jump out there and you can, you can
- 2:38Speaker 1: get your hustle on, but you need a team to
- 2:41Speaker 1: bring uh success to you, long term success. And that's
- 2:45Speaker 1: what you have now right now. You have long term
- 2:47Speaker 1: success because you know when I met you, you know,
- 2:49Speaker 1: we both met with n Any two in Houston, Texas,
- 2:51Speaker 1: had getting you a hustle along with Destiny Child out
- 2:53Speaker 1: of getting my hustle along. Before I started manager, you
- 2:56Speaker 1: just wanted to be a stand up comedy running up
- 2:58Speaker 1: hip hop comedy stops right there on Main Street. And
- 3:02Speaker 1: with that being said, you know, we look back and
- 3:05Speaker 1: we see that this is what I love about this conversation.
- 3:08Speaker 1: This is why I wanted to bring you back is this, Matthews,
- 3:11Speaker 1: that what you're doing today, it's something you've always been doing,
- 3:16Speaker 1: you know. Entrepreneurship motivation, telling people how to be successful
- 3:20Speaker 1: when they have doubts about being successful. Also walking through
- 3:24Speaker 1: walls that people tell you you cannot go through. That's
- 3:29Speaker 1: what makes you special. And when you when you when
- 3:31Speaker 1: you're motivating people, what is the basis of your motivation
- 3:34Speaker 1: to young people are to people in the entrepreneur world.
- 3:39Speaker 1: So so this is a true story. So they have
- 3:41Speaker 1: the a k A Convention here in Houston, thirty five
- 3:44Speaker 1: thousand a K S. I'm sitting at a restaurant outside
- 3:48Speaker 1: on the patio. This fifteen year old girl is selling
- 3:52Speaker 1: these house shoes and then the pink and green house
- 3:56Speaker 1: shoes right right right, but she had on white house shoes.
- 4:00Speaker 1: And I called the young lady over and I said, well,
- 4:02Speaker 1: why don't you Why don't you have the pink and
- 4:05Speaker 1: greenhouse shoes that you're trying to sell. She says, well,
- 4:09Speaker 1: these all get dirty. I said, no, no, no, no, no,
- 4:13Speaker 1: put on the pink and green And I said, by
- 4:15Speaker 1: the way, ask the ladies. As they don't buy it,
- 4:18Speaker 1: buy them ask them for a donation. You'll make way
- 4:21Speaker 1: more money just getting donation, he says, sir, I'm gonna
- 4:24Speaker 1: try this for ten minutes, sir. She came back and
- 4:27Speaker 1: ten minutes she had made a hundred some dollars just
- 4:33Speaker 1: by changing her philosophy. Yeah, and doing it differently and
- 4:38Speaker 1: more effectively. And that's what people don't do in business.
- 4:41Speaker 1: They like this where this is my vision. They don't
- 4:44Speaker 1: want to change. There's no flexibility in the change. One
- 4:48Speaker 1: of the things that people always telling me to go Richard,
- 4:49Speaker 1: and you are the king of change. You know you.
- 4:52Speaker 1: You know you you're writer, you was a comedian, you
- 4:54Speaker 1: were active you You've done modeling work, you produced, you
- 4:58Speaker 1: manage talent, you created t he shows I go. I
- 5:01Speaker 1: tell them, let's call multiple streams of income. And you
- 5:04Speaker 1: believe in that model too, don't you. Absolutely? You know
- 5:07Speaker 1: we do the same exact thing. You know, we have
- 5:10Speaker 1: streams of income and music and movies and in education, um,
- 5:16Speaker 1: you know, multiple streams of income. Now being in Texas Southern,
- 5:20Speaker 1: let's talk about your role, uh molding young minds education
- 5:26Speaker 1: because when I read your book, education was very important
- 5:30Speaker 1: at first. Let me tell everybody, this man can sing
- 5:32Speaker 1: if you read this book or you find that that
- 5:34Speaker 1: I didn't know about you, Matthew. You know I don't
- 5:37Speaker 1: talk about you know, I didn't know you can carry
- 5:40Speaker 1: a note to read your book. You know what I'm saying.
- 5:42Speaker 1: You know you can going around there. Where did you
- 5:45Speaker 1: get to? Daddy? Daddy? The daddy. That's where the voice
- 5:47Speaker 1: came from, the kids, the daddy. So let's talk about that. Man.
- 5:51Speaker 1: You know the fun thing about this, this is why
- 5:54Speaker 1: I wanted to bring up so first of all, the
- 5:55Speaker 1: audio was bad, and I want everybody to know that
- 5:58Speaker 1: telling your story sometimes to get your story, y'all, listenbody
- 6:01Speaker 1: else like Richard mcdonaland help you tell your story. And
- 6:05Speaker 1: the fact that you could sing, and the fact that
- 6:07Speaker 1: you know, you came from this small country town and
- 6:10Speaker 1: you wanted to get out of it and it shaped
- 6:13Speaker 1: who you are today. And that's what this book is
- 6:16Speaker 1: all about, and and and and and and that's why
- 6:18Speaker 1: you wrote it correct here. Well, that's certainly one of
- 6:21Speaker 1: the reasons. I learned. One of the things was sewing
- 6:23Speaker 1: that if you and I at this point in our life,
- 6:26Speaker 1: if we don't tell our story, somebody else will tell
- 6:30Speaker 1: it and it would be his story, it won't be
- 6:33Speaker 1: our story. So it's important that I tell my story
- 6:37Speaker 1: because I listen to people. Man, I hear all kinds
- 6:40Speaker 1: of people managed Beyonce, they put the group together, they
- 6:43Speaker 1: were before, and I was like, well, I don't remember
- 6:47Speaker 1: these people. I love it. I love it, believe me.
- 6:51Speaker 1: You know, you know what Steve is a lot of
- 6:53Speaker 1: people have not a lot of things with Steve Harvey
- 6:54Speaker 1: that uh that I did. You know what I'm saying.
- 6:57Speaker 1: So so, but they talk that taking credit. And that's
- 6:59Speaker 1: why I tell people today it's called brandy. It's not bragging.
- 7:03Speaker 1: It's called branding and taking credit. It's called if. It's
- 7:06Speaker 1: only that makes sure your name is attached where supposed
- 7:09Speaker 1: to be attached, because that's how you that's how you
- 7:11Speaker 1: generate revenue, and that's how you generate credibility. Because as
- 7:14Speaker 1: soon as people say your name there, google you, and
- 7:18Speaker 1: if it's if it's not matching up, it can cast
- 7:21Speaker 1: your relationship and cause your money. It casts you money
- 7:23Speaker 1: and also can cast you a deal. And so that's
- 7:26Speaker 1: why when you said that that is so true, how people,
- 7:29Speaker 1: if you allow them, they would take credit for your
- 7:32Speaker 1: hard work. So that's all a part of the branding process.
- 7:35Speaker 1: And I'm sure that's a big part of your conversation
- 7:39Speaker 1: where you're talking to students. It is it is branding
- 7:42Speaker 1: is everything and and and a lot of folks don't
- 7:47Speaker 1: understand branding or endorsements opportunity. You know, I enjoyed teaching.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I might not be a Texas Southern U this semester.
- 7:56Speaker 1: There's a possibility I actually help three offers on the table. Uh.
- 8:02Speaker 1: One one might be in Atlanta. But I'm looking I'm
- 8:07Speaker 1: looking forward to this upcoming semester. I'm gonna have to
- 8:10Speaker 1: make that decision. That's the next two to three weeks
- 8:12Speaker 1: where I'm gonna be. But uh, you know, I have
- 8:15Speaker 1: two hbc us and and uh p w A and
- 8:19Speaker 1: for those of you don't know, that's a private white
- 8:21Speaker 1: institution institution p w A. UM. So I'm really excited
- 8:28Speaker 1: about getting more involved in academia. Writing my fourth book,
- 8:33Speaker 1: I just you know, finished Racism from the Eyes of
- 8:35Speaker 1: a Child. Uh. The next one that's the Emancipation of
- 8:39Speaker 1: Slaves through Music, and it talks about on that slave
- 8:43Speaker 1: ship that uh, how music saved are are people and
- 8:48Speaker 1: how they used music to escape even from slavery. But
- 8:52Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to academia and getting more involved. Now
- 8:56Speaker 1: with that being said, you said you have offers to
- 8:59Speaker 1: go out. What is the vision? What is the vision
- 9:02Speaker 1: of because this is not this is not music world,
- 9:04Speaker 1: this is not this is not by artists, is about
- 9:07Speaker 1: this is about academia. Explain me what's the future for
- 9:10Speaker 1: you in that land? Well, you know, I'm sixty or
- 9:13Speaker 1: six years old? It look great and look great. Shocking
- 9:17Speaker 1: that I did. I didn't know because you don't look
- 9:19Speaker 1: you know, there's a lot of people about that sixty
- 9:20Speaker 1: or six can't say that. You know, they look like
- 9:24Speaker 1: they look sixty six. Matthew, Matthew, Matthey, I know we're
- 9:30Speaker 1: about to go to break, but I got you know,
- 9:32Speaker 1: you'd be looking at people going do I look like that?
- 9:34Speaker 1: And you go home and look at the mirror. Go now,
- 9:37Speaker 1: I don't know what they're doing, but they need to
- 9:40Speaker 1: stop what they're doing because you look fantastic, because you know,
- 9:43Speaker 1: you embrace life, you embrace your age, and a lot
- 9:46Speaker 1: of people shut down. You know, they hear the words
- 9:48Speaker 1: sixty five. They think they're supposed to bend their back
- 9:50Speaker 1: over and retire. You're still playing a brighter future that's
- 9:54Speaker 1: why you look around young people. I'm around young people,
- 9:57Speaker 1: which also helps. And guess what, if you're around young people,
- 10:01Speaker 1: they will not let you slow down. We will. We'll
- 10:03Speaker 1: be back with more with my man Matthew knows frand
- 10:06Speaker 1: brother brother day, I tell a little a K young
- 10:12Speaker 1: lady out there, young future, a K person high to
- 10:15Speaker 1: sales stuff because in the end, just because you see
- 10:18Speaker 1: it one way, other people can see it differently. Listen,
- 10:22Speaker 1: listen to advice. We'll be right back with more money
- 10:25Speaker 1: making conversations. Keep winning, everybody, Hi, just with Sean McDonald.
- 10:29Speaker 1: You're listening to money making conversations on the phone. Is
- 10:32Speaker 1: uh from Houston, Texas right now, as Matthew knows, Matthew
- 10:36Speaker 1: UM graduate seventy four Fisk University basketball star, you can
- 10:43Speaker 1: sing all these things I didn't know about you, young man.
- 10:48Speaker 1: I can a little bit, a little bit. I can
- 10:52Speaker 1: sing a little bit. I'm the person that you know.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Like I said, if if the if the if the
- 10:58Speaker 1: room is loud enough, you know it was loud enough,
- 11:01Speaker 1: and you like me, I can sing now if you
- 11:04Speaker 1: want to, If you really want to get in front
- 11:06Speaker 1: of the church and mess up one of the good
- 11:08Speaker 1: church songs omnia man, Now you were singing in the church,
- 11:12Speaker 1: so you didn't stop talking to me. Brother. Because of
- 11:17Speaker 1: the fact that when you when you talking about the
- 11:20Speaker 1: academics and stuff those institute, please tell us about those
- 11:23Speaker 1: institute because I really want to get all the business
- 11:25Speaker 1: side out, and also about the book in this break
- 11:28Speaker 1: here because of the fact that Matthew I was just
- 11:30Speaker 1: gonna would keep hyping you, man, because you're a humble
- 11:33Speaker 1: guy like me. And one thing about I've learned about
- 11:36Speaker 1: being humble, people can um not give you the credit
- 11:40Speaker 1: you deserve. People can uh kind of like pay you
- 11:44Speaker 1: not what you're worth. And I that's what I've learned
- 11:47Speaker 1: about being rushand McDonald is that Rushan McDonald has to
- 11:51Speaker 1: tell everybody who he is. That's not a bad thing
- 11:54Speaker 1: these days. That's what social media is all about. And
- 11:57Speaker 1: you have to be consistent about it. And so when
- 11:59Speaker 1: you is on the show the first time, I immediately said,
- 12:01Speaker 1: I gotta get him back because that's not the Matthew knows.
- 12:04Speaker 1: I want people to know because I want people to
- 12:07Speaker 1: know that you that you. That's a journey and it
- 12:10Speaker 1: all started in Alabama, Gaston, Alabama. You know, I saw
- 12:14Speaker 1: Jesse Jackson. Uh. He was here yesterday and when I
- 12:18Speaker 1: was a little kid twelve thirteen years old, I was
- 12:21Speaker 1: demonstrating in Gaston, Alabama with Jesse Jackson, UM and and
- 12:26Speaker 1: it just took me back seeing him. A lot of
- 12:28Speaker 1: people don't realize how many young kids were involved in
- 12:31Speaker 1: that movement. I'm talking twelve thirteen, fourteen year old kids
- 12:35Speaker 1: that got beat electric Pride, got play in jail. I
- 12:40Speaker 1: had a fifteen year old first cousin that one day
- 12:42Speaker 1: he got arrested three times. UM. A lot of people
- 12:47Speaker 1: gave up a lot so that we can have the
- 12:50Speaker 1: opportunity to vote, and a lot of black folks don't
- 12:55Speaker 1: you use that opportunity, which really angerished me that we
- 13:00Speaker 1: went through all of that and people still don't go vote.
- 13:04Speaker 1: And voting is the economic changer, and that's why it's
- 13:08Speaker 1: important that people. That's why people if you notice in
- 13:11Speaker 1: voting process, they're trying to change the red team to
- 13:15Speaker 1: try to make adjustments out there. We have to be
- 13:16Speaker 1: aware of those different things. And that's what I say
- 13:19Speaker 1: is all aboudy. I'll tell people about education too is
- 13:21Speaker 1: a game changer. Two and your proponent of education, I'll
- 13:24Speaker 1: tell people this jokingly. They can't repoll your degree. Once
- 13:28Speaker 1: that degree gets on the wall, they can't take it
- 13:30Speaker 1: back away from you. And that's important that and that's
- 13:33Speaker 1: what you promote. And that's what now talk to me
- 13:36Speaker 1: about the the Knowles Institute. So so I believe just
- 13:40Speaker 1: like what's happened in music. You know, ten years ago
- 13:43Speaker 1: we had c ds and we always thought it was
- 13:47Speaker 1: gonna be c d s. And now we streaming right
- 13:50Speaker 1: right right, right, right right right, and the same thing
- 13:52Speaker 1: that's going to happen. Matthew. We went from a track.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Now let's going back on me and the car board.
- 13:58Speaker 1: At the cardboard, the side would slip you don track
- 14:03Speaker 1: one track seven, press that repeat button, brother repeat, but
- 14:09Speaker 1: that same track. You know what I'm talking about. Man,
- 14:13Speaker 1: I love talking to Matthew. Mathew, you never had an
- 14:15Speaker 1: interview like this, he said, Man, like I'm talking to
- 14:17Speaker 1: my cousin. It's like we just on the phone. Because
- 14:22Speaker 1: you know, you have that, you have the eight tracks
- 14:23Speaker 1: that you had, the albums with the with the liners.
- 14:26Speaker 1: You could get the lyrics. You can't get the lyrics anymore.
- 14:28Speaker 1: You know. That's what always misses me up today. They
- 14:31Speaker 1: don't want to read the same thing I think is
- 14:35Speaker 1: going to happen to education. I think the brick and
- 14:37Speaker 1: mortar buildings are gonna be empty. No, twenty years from now,
- 14:44Speaker 1: these schools are gonna be empty because these younger, younger
- 14:50Speaker 1: kids today, they're in that digital mode. They on that phone,
- 14:54Speaker 1: that are on that computer. They're gonna want to get
- 14:57Speaker 1: dressed up and drive and all that when they consider
- 15:00Speaker 1: home and have the same similar learning experience online. And
- 15:05Speaker 1: so the those institute is online continuing education. The other
- 15:10Speaker 1: thing I believe is that as we look at education today,
- 15:14Speaker 1: the future is it's gonna be less and less getting degrees.
- 15:18Speaker 1: People are gonna want to learn something, right, I'm not
- 15:21Speaker 1: gonna want to go four years and take history of
- 15:24Speaker 1: biology when I really just want to be a music manager.
- 15:31Speaker 1: So I'm just gonna take music management courses. Now. The
- 15:34Speaker 1: interesting thing about when you when you look back, how
- 15:37Speaker 1: life has really changed, you know, especially online education. You
- 15:40Speaker 1: know the big one used to be just be Phoenix,
- 15:43Speaker 1: you know, you know that's what now. You know, you
- 15:46Speaker 1: get online education at the University Houston, you online education Texas,
- 15:49Speaker 1: Southern Michigan University. You know, online education, like you said,
- 15:53Speaker 1: that's the wave now that's that's how people are moving.
- 15:56Speaker 1: They want to stay home, they want to be able
- 15:58Speaker 1: to be able to control their schedule. But also what
- 16:02Speaker 1: that creates is is people are not connecting with people.
- 16:06Speaker 1: You kind of lose that that disconnect there if you
- 16:09Speaker 1: if you're just gonna stay and run your world from
- 16:12Speaker 1: your phone, and that's why you still go out there
- 16:14Speaker 1: and you still teach, you still interact with the students.
- 16:19Speaker 1: That's important, very important. But I have to say that
- 16:23Speaker 1: in my twenty five years of Music World, my rector
- 16:28Speaker 1: label and management company, I have never ever interviewed anyone
- 16:32Speaker 1: and asked them what is your degree in? So if
- 16:36Speaker 1: I'm interviewing somebody for marketing, my question is what have
- 16:40Speaker 1: you done in the marketing M and and and they
- 16:44Speaker 1: said that that is their resume. Relationship build to you. Now,
- 16:49Speaker 1: your resume included corporate life because the Xerox you know,
- 16:52Speaker 1: so you so you had a natural salesman background, which
- 16:57Speaker 1: carries over to why how are you able to deliver
- 16:59Speaker 1: your message? So Ellen can Willie now, because you've always
- 17:02Speaker 1: been able to take a product and then market it
- 17:05Speaker 1: and then introduce it to somebody and then sell it
- 17:08Speaker 1: and make it a comout of the Sean. My philosophy
- 17:13Speaker 1: is selling is people first by men, they buy my product.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Say that the game, Matthew, that's a church moment. That's
- 17:21Speaker 1: a church moment right there. That's a church moment. People
- 17:24Speaker 1: first buy me, then they buy my product, because if
- 17:28Speaker 1: I don't, if I don't sell you on me, it
- 17:30Speaker 1: don't matter what my product is. That's really and to
- 17:36Speaker 1: know something. And that's what I've been doing. I sell
- 17:39Speaker 1: people on my relationship. I sell people on my name.
- 17:41Speaker 1: I sell people on the fact that that if I
- 17:44Speaker 1: say something that I'm gonna do it, I do it.
- 17:47Speaker 1: So they've learned to trust your brand and your situation.
- 17:51Speaker 1: You're saying before the word brand was coming is so popular,
- 17:53Speaker 1: and that use your name was your brand, and so
- 17:57Speaker 1: people trust your name and trust what you said you're
