- 0:05you know, expecting to pick up dinner and finding
- 0:08the display cases completely empty. Just bare
- 0:11shelves. Right, bare shelves. And not because
- 0:13of a drought or a transport strike, but because
- 0:16someone hundreds of miles away clicked a bad
- 0:20link in an email. Or maybe an unpatched VPN appliance
- 0:23finally got exploited. Exactly. You're standing
- 0:25there looking at empty shelves, realizing that...
- 0:28The physical world, the food we eat, the supplies
- 0:31we buy is entirely at the mercy of the, well,
- 0:34the invisible chaotic world of computer code.
- 0:37It is a jarring realization for most people,
- 0:39honestly, because we tend to view our supply

- 2:01of operations. Well, let's ground this in the
- 2:03scale of the target because Hazeldeans is not
- 2:06some, you know, boutique mom and pop farming
- 2:09operation. They are a massive logistical empire
- 2:12based in Victoria. Massive is almost an understatement.
- 2:16Right. We're talking about processing roughly
- 2:18900 ,000 birds every single week. Wow. Yeah,
- 2:22that translates to producing over 85 million
- 2:25kilograms of chicken annually. I mean, they supply
- 2:28major supermarket chains, wholesalers, independent
- 2:32butchers all across the region. And this operation
- 2:35spans over 50 different highly integrated sites,
- 2:38doesn't it? It does. Farms, hatcheries, processing
- 2:41plants, all anchored by their massive Lockwood

- 2:46makes them a target. When you have an operation

- 3:17treasure trove of intellectual property or easily
- 3:21monetizable data. What's the leverage here? Well,
- 3:25what's fascinating here is how modern ransomware
- 3:27syndicates operate now. They've realized that
- 3:30data theft. While lucrative is complicated. Because
- 3:32you have to find a buyer. Right. You need a buyer
- 3:35or you have to hope the victim pays to keep it
- 3:37quiet. But if you target a company processing
- 3:40900 ,000 live animals a week, you aren't just
- 3:43stealing data to sell. You are weaponizing their
- 3:46own biological ticking clock against them. It's
- 3:49all about targeting uptime. Halting processing
- 3:51and packaging creates immense urgency, which
- 3:54hackers try to leverage. Because the product
- 3:56is perishable. Perishable and living. I mean,
- 3:59think about the mechanics. A bank can often weather
- 4:01a few days of system outages. Transactions get
- 4:04queued. Ledgers update asynchronously later.
- 4:06It's a headache, but the money doesn't rot. Exactly.
- 4:09In agriculture, you have living animals that
- 4:12require automated feeding, climate control, welfare
- 4:15management. And once processed, you have meat
- 4:18that requires strict refrigeration and immediate
- 4:20packaging. So if you halt those conveyor belts,
- 4:23you create an immediate visceral crisis. And
- 4:26the hackers leverage that immense operational
- 4:28pressure, knowing the company is bleeding millions
- 4:30of dollars by the hour to try and force a rapid

- 4:36the 19th of February, 2026. This biological ticking
- 4:40clock was suddenly weaponized against Hazeldeans.
- 4:44Right. They detected a cyber attack actively
- 4:46moving through their environment. Yeah. Employees
- 4:48started experiencing login issues, which is the
- 4:51classic hallmark of a compromised Active Directory.
- 4:54Absolutely. That or the domain controller issue.
- 4:56And then the company had to start frantically
- 4:58shutting down Wi -Fi networks at one or more
- 5:00of its sites to contain the spread. Now, I want
- 5:03to look closely at this immediate defensive response,
- 5:05shutting down the whole IT system. The kill switch.
- 5:08Right, the kill switch. Shutting down the whole
- 5:11IT system feels like turning off the main water
- 5:14valve to your house because of a leaky sink.
- 5:17You know, you can't shower or drink, but you
- 5:19save the foundation. That's a good way to put
- 5:21it. But in an integrated facility processing
- 5:24almost a million birds a week, isn't the cure
- 5:27of a total shutdown almost as catastrophic as
- 5:30the digital disease? It feels that way. Yeah,
- 5:33it is extreme. But if we connect this to the
- 5:36bigger picture. Looking at the mechanics of a
- 5:39modern intrusion, it's often the only viable
- 5:41option. Really? The only option? In manufacturing,
- 5:45yes. Let's say a threat actor gains entry through
- 5:47a compromised credential on an unpatched external
- 5:50VPN. They don't just sit on that one server.
- 5:52Right. They spread. They use automated scripts
- 5:55to move laterally. They scan the environment.
- 5:57map out the network architecture, attempt to
- 5:59escalate privileges, and they actively hunt for

- 6:30Literally no physical connection. But in the
- 6:32pursuit of efficiency, you know, predictive maintenance,
- 6:35data analytics, companies have converged these
- 6:37networks. Now, the email server can often talk
- 6:40to the server controlling the conveyor belts.
- 6:42Oh, wow. So if Hazeldeans doesn't intentionally
- 6:45bulldoze those digital hallways the moment they
- 6:47detect lateral movement, the infection... Crosses
- 6:50the bridge. Exactly. It crosses from the digital
- 6:52IT space right into the physical OT space. A
- 6:56rapid IT shutdown halts production, sure, but
- 6:59it prevents the total compromise of the entire
- 7:01network. So the sudden Wi -Fi shutdowns, the
- 7:04login blocks, the total IT freeze, it's all about
- 7:07creating artificial air gaps on the fly. That's
- 7:09the brutal calculus of incident response. If
- 7:13they allowed that malware to encrypt the programmable
- 7:16logic controllers on the factory floor. They
- 7:19wouldn't just be offline for a few days. They
- 7:21could be forced to physically rip and replace
- 7:23hardware. Which would keep them offline for months.

- 8:46if you've supposedly isolated the threat? Because
- 8:49a phased return is a painstaking, highly technical
- 8:52process. You cannot simply wipe a server, restore
- 8:55a backup, and plug it back into the wall. Because
- 8:58the backup might be infected too. Exactly. If
- 9:00the threat actor compromised your active directory,
- 9:03the system that manages all user permissions,
- 9:05your backups might contain those same compromised
- 9:07administrative accounts. If you restore them,
- 9:10the hackers just log right back in. Wow. So you
- 9:13are essentially rebuilding the digital foundation
- 9:15of the company while the physical company is

- 9:20to deploy specialized monitoring agents across
- 9:23every endpoint. They have to verify the integrity
- 9:26of the backups in an isolated environment. It

- 12:13That 2 .0 a .m. delivery window is the absolute
- 12:16lifeblood of a wholesale operation. That specific
- 12:19delivery dictates everything they can process,
- 12:22portion and send out to their own retail clients
- 12:24later that same morning. So when the trucks fail
- 12:27to show up at 2 a .m., the entire downstream
- 12:29network of restaurants, cafes and supermarkets
- 12:32misses their morning stock. It's a domino effect.
- 12:35And the chaos wasn't just caused by the lack
- 12:37of product. It was compounded by a complete breakdown
- 12:40in communication. I mean, listen to the story
- 12:43of Nathan Grayling. The butcher, right? Yeah,
- 12:45he's a regional butcher who relies on a major
- 12:48weekly delivery to stock his shop. And notably,
