- 4:51Speaker 1: imagine at this place. Please welcome to money making Conversation.
- 4:55Speaker 1: This dynamic duel known as David and Tamila Man good
- 5:04Speaker 1: this morning. You know what I'm saying. I gotta give
- 5:06Speaker 1: you love, you know, David, o't there? You know, give
- 5:09Speaker 1: us a little couple of credits out there. I gott
- 5:11Speaker 1: it hit everybody though, who tablet is much? Ain't doing?
- 5:19Speaker 1: Ain't doing? Brother man we are excellent. It gets always good.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I appreciate just well you're you're you're fantastic. And you
- 5:32Speaker 1: guys have always been there for me, uh with Steve
- 5:35Speaker 1: and I was doing the Neighborhood Awards. Anytime we called
- 5:37Speaker 1: to do anything, you guys have been there rescuing it
- 5:39Speaker 1: with a strong faith and commitment. And uh, and you
- 5:42Speaker 1: and you value your fans. And that's what I really
- 5:45Speaker 1: liked about it about your career and what you've done.
- 5:48Speaker 1: And I've known you guys know a long time now,
- 5:50Speaker 1: over twenty years and so and you guys have been
- 5:54Speaker 1: consistent and I've seen you grown. But one of the
- 5:56Speaker 1: things I wanted to talk about, and you know, not
- 5:58Speaker 1: jokingly only I can you know, I can joke only
- 6:00Speaker 1: talk about David and Tamila's career because both of them
- 6:03Speaker 1: have phenomenal careers as singers and actors. And David, he
- 6:07Speaker 1: decided one that he gonna do stand up. That's how
- 6:10Speaker 1: talented he is. He's just gonna decide on his reality show,
- 6:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna do stand up, right, and but no, no, no,
- 6:21Speaker 1: no no. But then he gonna go on tour though
- 6:26Speaker 1: you don't do it, do it? Do it? And not
- 6:31Speaker 1: afraid to do. Go it do to do. You got
- 6:34Speaker 1: a lot of keys. But here's the thing about what
- 6:38Speaker 1: I wanted to talk about on this show because I
- 6:39Speaker 1: was talking My show is about the entrepreneurship Tamline David.
- 6:42Speaker 1: And you know, in this business, you come you come
- 6:46Speaker 1: in based on your talent, okay, and and God that's
- 6:49Speaker 1: given both of you, individual to individual, tremendous amount of talent.
- 6:53Speaker 1: But I see over the years you're starting to control
- 6:57Speaker 1: your own destiny, okay. And if you can talk to
- 7:00Speaker 1: us a little bit about that, And when did it
- 7:02Speaker 1: really making you realize that you know that you can
- 7:04Speaker 1: actually book yourself, you can actually create your own music
- 7:09Speaker 1: production company. When did all that start to fall in place?
- 7:13Speaker 1: You know, we kind of started back in I think
- 7:15Speaker 1: we did our first album in two thousand four right
- 7:18Speaker 1: there somewhere and there, And it's because we've seen how
- 7:22Speaker 1: the labels were treating artists and it was like, you know,
- 7:27Speaker 1: I know how to do music. I know that Tamla
- 7:30Speaker 1: as one of those going with the voices, So it
- 7:33Speaker 1: was just like, let's do our own. You know. At first, now,
- 7:36Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you, at first then was like I
- 7:39Speaker 1: ain't having it. She was like, I'm not finished being
- 7:44Speaker 1: no solo album by myself and go out there by herself.
- 7:47Speaker 1: But I just believed in so much in what we had.
- 7:51Speaker 1: I just said, let's put the music together and put
- 7:53Speaker 1: it out there and it's such good people will buy it. People,
- 7:57Speaker 1: you know, we love it. So we just decided to
- 7:59Speaker 1: create our own And I just believe in ownership. And
- 8:03Speaker 1: you know, seeing you guys, guys like you who started
- 8:07Speaker 1: to control their own narrative in this business and not
- 8:11Speaker 1: allow people to tell you that you could do this,
- 8:13Speaker 1: you can't do that, and that's you know, having good
- 8:16Speaker 1: examples like that helped as well. Well, you know, it's important.
- 8:19Speaker 1: And thank you for that compliment because I always tell
- 8:22Speaker 1: people I didn't. I didn't there was no blueprint. And
- 8:25Speaker 1: then and I guess what was our afraid was Steve
- 8:28Speaker 1: Harvey afraid? Yeah, because unknown makes you're afraid, but you
- 8:32Speaker 1: have to walk past it. What you said, I was
- 8:36Speaker 1: just about to say, you have to do it, afraid,
- 8:39Speaker 1: and that's what that's that's what you guys did, and
- 8:41Speaker 1: that's what I I've just seen that developed over the
- 8:44Speaker 1: years with with this and I look at the month
- 8:46Speaker 1: of November and you guys. Uh, that's a Thanksgiving month
- 8:50Speaker 1: for the Man family and the month of November. You
- 8:51Speaker 1: have two big projects coming out of November. You have
- 8:55Speaker 1: the about the US Against the World's Secrets to our
- 8:59Speaker 1: married love, marriage and Family. Would be a book available, No,
- 9:03Speaker 1: that will be on Harper Colums. Correct, that's the one
- 9:06Speaker 1: I want to get a copy of so I can
- 9:08Speaker 1: give it to my fans. And then your first album
- 9:11Speaker 1: drops Us against the World, The Love Project drops November night. First,
- 9:15Speaker 1: let's talk about the album because last time he was
- 9:18Speaker 1: on my show earlier in the year, we talked about that.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Now we were it's October, November's next month. Is about
- 9:24Speaker 1: to happen? Any hiccups? Is it where you wanted to be?
- 9:27Speaker 1: Is everything timing out like you wanted to want it
- 9:30Speaker 1: to happen. What's happened is it's a lot. We put
- 9:35Speaker 1: so much at one time where the body can't keep
- 9:37Speaker 1: up with the work. But I mean we've I've really
- 9:43Speaker 1: enjoyed it to be in the studio with David again
- 9:47Speaker 1: after over fifteen years, because let's talk about I've been
- 9:52Speaker 1: pulling teeth with him to sing with me on my records,
- 9:55Speaker 1: and he was like every time it's time for him
- 9:57Speaker 1: to do it. The studio session, find something to do. Yeah,
- 10:02Speaker 1: well I just hold on, hold on hold of that.
- 10:05Speaker 1: I would be you know, David can sing. David, I
- 10:08Speaker 1: know I would joke around about his singing. He could
- 10:09Speaker 1: sing that. But you know, Tamla, you can sing. And
- 10:14Speaker 1: that's why it was so difficult for me to go
- 10:17Speaker 1: come on, so I thought you was gonna be on
- 10:19Speaker 1: my It' very it's very intimidating to sing with Tamelo. Man.
- 10:23Speaker 1: You know, I know how this thing it's not for you.
- 10:30Speaker 1: It's not for you because it's you. But the team
- 10:34Speaker 1: that we put together, the writing team that my frind,
- 10:37Speaker 1: David J put together for this whole project, they Taylor
- 10:40Speaker 1: made the songs and the lyrics everything just for me.
- 10:45Speaker 1: So it made it comfortable. I mean, they made it
- 10:49Speaker 1: very comfortable for us to get go in and do
- 10:52Speaker 1: the music. So that's what made it easy for me
- 10:54Speaker 1: because at first I was I was shaking in my
- 10:57Speaker 1: boost that first time. You I've seen the acapella. I've
- 11:02Speaker 1: seen her acappella. Okay, bringing down the house, twenty thousand
- 11:06Speaker 1: people just throw hard, Mike on the front row. She
- 11:09Speaker 1: get up like you know, know that. She don't even
- 11:11Speaker 1: do the me me, me me, Oh, she'd do the scales.
- 11:15Speaker 1: She'll do nothing, David, she do this, do this, everybody,
- 11:21Speaker 1: this is our challenged You go, oh, just Steve Harbils,
- 11:24Speaker 1: just give her the mike, right just saying she don't
- 11:27Speaker 1: like oh me, oh it's too late at night. Oh
- 11:32Speaker 1: it's she don't do that. She don't do that. She
- 11:35Speaker 1: just starts singing, just singing. So I understand you're being
- 11:38Speaker 1: intimidated after all those credits I just read, and you
- 11:42Speaker 1: know you got a lot more credit. But you know,
- 11:45Speaker 1: you know, a boy, that's how that's the talent you
- 11:51Speaker 1: got it. That's that's why you gotta go see this show.
- 11:52Speaker 1: You gotta go see the show because they're very special.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Tell us exactly how the show starts, what's all happening
- 11:58Speaker 1: in the show, and how ends? Can you David, can
- 12:01Speaker 1: you tell me how that works? Thank? You know, it
- 12:05Speaker 1: starts with the whole family on stage and we do
- 12:08Speaker 1: this big number, this number called Us against the World.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Is that you know there's it's the title song to
- 12:14Speaker 1: the album. It's called Us against the World. So the
- 12:16Speaker 1: whole family does the US against the World soon and
- 12:20Speaker 1: then David comes out, David Jr. Comes out and has
- 12:23Speaker 1: this big, huge party. We were in rehearsal last night
- 12:26Speaker 1: and I just heard is DJ foot y'all this board
- 12:31Speaker 1: is rocking, the plays party having to play going. Then
- 12:35Speaker 1: my daughter Tia is doing a tribute. I don't know
- 12:38Speaker 1: if I want to give away her tribute. I'm anyway
- 12:43Speaker 1: doing this really good tribute to Aretha Franklin. It's a
- 12:47Speaker 1: queen and it's a it's a really heartfelt tribute that
- 12:50Speaker 1: she's doing. And then I come out and do stand us.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Then Tabla comes out after immunissition and just takes us
- 12:57Speaker 1: the church for a second, and we interrupt the whole
- 13:00Speaker 1: show to encourage families, encouraged couples with the love set.
- 13:05Speaker 1: And then in the middle of that, I'm gonna tell
- 13:08Speaker 1: you what happened to me yesterday in rehearsal from this
- 13:11Speaker 1: love set. It had me cry. He looked up. She said, Babe,
- 13:15Speaker 1: you can't do that because if I look down to
- 13:17Speaker 1: the crime, I'm gonna be done. You said the crying
- 13:23Speaker 1: like that, I'm gonna start crying. And then Pam just
- 13:27Speaker 1: took us straight out to church who were in rehearsal.
- 13:31Speaker 1: It was people that were working at the theater where
- 13:34Speaker 1: we were rehearsing yesterday. That will crying. So it's that
- 13:37Speaker 1: kind of movie. That's the whole show right there. I
- 13:40Speaker 1: just laid out to you. Well, I'm gonna tell you
- 13:42Speaker 1: you know, I'm gonna be there. That's oct s. Like
- 13:45Speaker 1: I said, if I'm gonna if I'm gonna see you
- 13:47Speaker 1: for almost four or five days, I'm gonna have to
- 13:49Speaker 1: hug you. And don't give Rashaw McDonald no ticket. Don't
- 13:52Speaker 1: give me no ticket. I'm buying my ticket, okay, because
- 13:55Speaker 1: I support I believe, I believe in the man. I
- 13:59Speaker 1: believe in the Man. Now I believe in the Man.
- 14:02Speaker 1: And just let me just recap everything to the everybody's listening.
- 14:06Speaker 1: No remember nine. The album drops Us Against the World,
- 14:09Speaker 1: The Love Project November. It's going to be there from

- 18:01Speaker 1: NBA Heat Championships and fame and uh A game just
- 18:05Speaker 1: follows this young man alone and also on the phone
- 18:08Speaker 1: is his mother, who is the CEO of its foundation.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Please welcome to the show, Mario Thomas and his mom,
- 18:15Speaker 1: al Marie Chomas. Good morning. How you doing. How are
- 18:21Speaker 1: you okay? Well, okay, now you're not you're not in
- 18:23Speaker 1: the same room. So what cities are each one? Are
- 18:25Speaker 1: you calling from? Mario? I'm calling from Detroit, Detroit, Michigan.
- 18:31Speaker 1: And Mom, I'm calling from Charlotte, North Carolina. Oh, that's Charlotte,
- 18:37Speaker 1: destroyt some good eating in Detroit, Troy. This being reftalized,
- 18:40Speaker 1: I know about that. And you know you in in
- 18:43Speaker 1: brick City there in Charlotte, Now Charlotte, North Carolina. I
- 18:47Speaker 1: love that city. One of my favorite cities there. So
- 18:52Speaker 1: it's a fun place. So here's there. Here's the fun
- 18:54Speaker 1: thing about it. First of all, thank you for coming
- 18:55Speaker 1: on Money Making Conversation. Thank you for having us. First
- 18:59Speaker 1: of all, I just wanna let you know this show
- 19:00Speaker 1: is your show. So know that this relationship that we're
- 19:03Speaker 1: developing here is something that you can call on. Mario,
- 19:06Speaker 1: consider me like a big brother. Okay, a big brother,
- 19:10Speaker 1: you know, if you need something and uh mom calling
- 19:13Speaker 1: your mom, call me your friend, Okay, when you need
- 19:16Speaker 1: something happening and promoting and things like that. And that's
- 19:18Speaker 1: what I developed this platform. And uh it's taken off
- 19:21Speaker 1: and that's all everybody's calling the show. But here's here's
- 19:25Speaker 1: the fun part about it. So Mario, I'm reading your
- 19:27Speaker 1: bio and you played basketball in Alaska. Okay, now you
- 19:36Speaker 1: know you know Mario, you know, I just don't pitch it.
- 19:40Speaker 1: I gotta see it like this. Black people play basketball
- 19:42Speaker 1: in Alaska. A lot of people say that. You know
- 19:49Speaker 1: what I'm saying. You know, you go you want two
- 19:51Speaker 1: state championships in Alaska? So so so now I'm gonnaell
- 19:55Speaker 1: you here's the funny point. But it's two states I
- 19:57Speaker 1: want to visit. Alaska is one of those states. And
- 20:00Speaker 1: I think I'm gonna go there and uh, next year
- 20:03Speaker 1: doing a youth survey. So tell me that. Why what
- 20:07Speaker 1: would I get the experience when I come to Alaska?
- 20:09Speaker 1: Why is such a beautiful steak? I'll tell you this,
- 20:12Speaker 1: the first time you come to Alastka. You gotta do
- 20:14Speaker 1: the cruise. You gotta do. You gotta do the cruise
- 20:16Speaker 1: that goes through uh the mountains, the glaciers. Um see
- 20:23Speaker 1: all the wildlife and the beautiful scenery in Alaska. That's
- 20:26Speaker 1: that's what we're known for. That's the that's the best
- 20:28Speaker 1: part of Alaska. So I definitely recommend that. And then um,
- 20:32Speaker 1: just go out and get some good food. You know,
- 20:33Speaker 1: We've got good food, got all types of different religions
- 20:36Speaker 1: out there and culture, so you know, the food is
- 20:38Speaker 1: very diverse out there and it's actually pretty good food.
- 20:42Speaker 1: And cruise is two things I recommend. Cool Ah, Marie,
- 20:45Speaker 1: how did you get your sharn up to Alaska Military?
- 20:54Speaker 1: My husband was in the military Air Force and so
- 20:56Speaker 1: we were there and I played the fourth so um goer.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Mario was born that and we raised both of our
- 21:03Speaker 1: kids there. M nomber as you this now, you know,
- 21:08Speaker 1: being a mom and being and and and and watching
- 21:12Speaker 1: your son, you know, because he he was used in Alaska.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Then he made the decision. I want to talk a
- 21:17Speaker 1: little bit about that. We're gonna get to the book
- 21:19Speaker 1: is the book ABC is a basketball which is really
- 21:22Speaker 1: important to the youth of America. But I also want
- 21:25Speaker 1: to talk about the journey because when you when you
- 21:28Speaker 1: when you an athlete, because you're you're you know, you're
- 21:32Speaker 1: McDonald's all American, Mario, you go to a school like
- 21:36Speaker 1: Kansas and then you and ther away from your family.
- 21:40Speaker 1: How did that affectcause your father was your high school coach? Correct?
- 21:44Speaker 1: How did that? How did that affect? How did that
- 21:46Speaker 1: transition happen to you? Because that you have all that
- 21:49Speaker 1: all that that that protection, all that close mentoring and
- 21:52Speaker 1: all that you know, he has your back. And then
- 21:55Speaker 1: the coach of bill self, I believe it's the coach
- 21:57Speaker 1: of a cancer university. Uh did you to go to Kansas?
- 22:01Speaker 1: What did you have any homesickness spell? Homesick spells? Oh yeah,
- 22:05Speaker 1: I gotta get back. This is just the right decision.
- 22:07Speaker 1: How did you make the transition? Um? Actually the transition
- 22:11Speaker 1: was easy for me. Um. All my friends played basketball. Um,
- 22:15Speaker 1: I hang out with an older crowd. So two of
- 22:17Speaker 1: my best friends they went off to play college basketball,
- 22:20Speaker 1: and I was there the last of my senior years.
- 22:22Speaker 1: So for me, just getting out that was my main focus.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Getting out of being being a positive guy for the
- 22:27Speaker 1: community and you know, showing people that you can't make
- 22:30Speaker 1: it about make it out of Alaska, to make it
- 22:32Speaker 1: big in sports world, and you know, that was my
- 22:34Speaker 1: main focus and put a lask on the mess Okay,
- 22:36Speaker 1: al Marie, are your son this foundation? You just ceo
- 22:40Speaker 1: this foundation? Okay, let me just ask you this because
- 22:43Speaker 1: I was always important that I feel athletes get back.
- 22:45Speaker 1: I have a foundation of understanding their role. What what
- 22:50Speaker 1: role did you play? Are you playing in the messaging
- 22:53Speaker 1: and the foundation? Oh? The role is just keeping the
- 22:57Speaker 1: message alive and supporting the vision that Mario first came
- 23:01Speaker 1: up with, which was um formulated when we lost a
- 23:05Speaker 1: dear friend of breast Camper. He just wanted to dedicate
- 23:09Speaker 1: you know, time and energy to supporting the cause. And
- 23:11Speaker 1: so once that was his vision, we went to work
- 23:14Speaker 1: on making things happen by connecting with various people in
- 23:17Speaker 1: different communities and of course Kansas has been one of
- 23:20Speaker 1: our biggest supporters because of the fact he wasn't there
- 23:24Speaker 1: and we were blessed to be able to open up
- 23:26Speaker 1: a Mario's closet which is located in the local hospital
- 23:30Speaker 1: by things for you know, breast cancer survivors. Now what
- 23:34Speaker 1: what what local is that in Kansas the hospital wing
- 23:37Speaker 1: gets opened. Yeah, larga Maria Hospital and it's actually a
- 23:45Speaker 1: a closet. Is that's the concept that it was a
- 23:47Speaker 1: closet that was a feasible and flexible and available first
- 23:52Speaker 1: patients without having to go different places. Especially when it
- 23:55Speaker 1: comes down to the hairy mogal process, which really interesting
- 23:59Speaker 1: because when I read your body or when you know,
- 24:02Speaker 1: they bring all kind of everybody. My staff pitches me,
- 24:05Speaker 1: show ideas, guest ideas, and my older sisters she passed
- 24:08Speaker 1: away to breastcastle and so so when I saw what
- 24:11Speaker 1: you was doing your foundation, that really really I gotta help,
- 24:15Speaker 1: you know, promote your brain and get your word out.
- 24:17Speaker 1: But you know, because you know, you're you know, you're
- 24:19Speaker 1: a talented athlete, and you you raised your son right.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Ms Thomas, you raised it right, and that that has
- 24:25Speaker 1: to be said correctly because we have so many stories
- 24:27Speaker 1: about the misguided athlete, dysfunctional, don't have a relationship, you know,
- 24:33Speaker 1: being raised by somebody else's family. I'm so tired of
- 24:36Speaker 1: that store. You know, we're fortunate that our story is
- 24:42Speaker 1: we were able to raise our sign and support them
- 24:43Speaker 1: as well as his sister. And although we did this
- 24:46Speaker 1: in Alaska and we still had a good support system
- 24:49Speaker 1: in the lower forty eight as we called it, and
- 24:51Speaker 1: we were blessed to be able to put him in
- 24:53Speaker 1: a position to go and live a dream. What is
- 24:57Speaker 1: that dream? Mario? What is that dream? You've been in Miami?
- 25:01Speaker 1: I know it was a dream down there that being
- 25:05Speaker 1: in Miami was a benefit. The dream was always looking
- 25:07Speaker 1: to the NBA no matter where I was, That's what
- 25:10Speaker 1: I wanted to be. Oh, Miami boy, I've been down
- 25:13Speaker 1: to Miami. Mario, you were the Miami. I knew it
- 25:16Speaker 1: was the love you still you still have a place
- 25:19Speaker 1: down in Miami. You're all up in Detroit. Now, what's
- 25:21Speaker 1: going on now? I'm just in Detroit of my girls
- 25:24Speaker 1: having a baby out here. But congratulation, appreciate it. Okay? Uh?
- 25:28Speaker 1: Can I ask you your first child? I know my
- 25:33Speaker 1: ld Okay? Cool? And now, how with that being said,
- 25:37Speaker 1: being a father, how did how did that did it
- 25:41Speaker 1: change your outlook all life? Or what? Talk to me
- 25:45Speaker 1: about that? Um? It did kind of change my outlook
- 25:48Speaker 1: on life. You know, before before you have kids and
- 25:51Speaker 1: being a teenager in college, you get thrown out and
- 25:53Speaker 1: do what every new I mean with their reason half
- 25:56Speaker 1: for us. So um, I have. I had my first
- 25:59Speaker 1: kid the year we won the national championship. So it
- 26:03Speaker 1: was it was a bitter sweet moment for me. Um.
- 26:06Speaker 1: You know, of course I love having my son, love
- 26:08Speaker 1: having him, but at the moment in time, it was
- 26:10Speaker 1: it was a hard transition just being a college athlete. Um,
- 26:14Speaker 1: thinking about making my next move going to the NBA.
- 26:17Speaker 1: So um, it was a lot of going back and
- 26:19Speaker 1: forth with me. But you know, at the end of
- 26:20Speaker 1: the day, guy took care of it. He worked it
- 26:22Speaker 1: out best for me and my family and for my Sorenth.
- 26:24Speaker 1: So um, everything came together and it just made me
- 26:28Speaker 1: grow up faster and be more responsible, more more in
- 26:31Speaker 1: tune too to the world and what's going on and
- 26:34Speaker 1: not just locked up in the basketball world. Focus on basketball. Mom.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Thank you for raising that man, and thank you for
- 26:41Speaker 1: you guys for putting out this book. Mario Charmels ABC

- 27:00Speaker 1: are you. We are brothers, and you know and mom
- 27:02Speaker 1: gonna poke if you don't, she gonna poke. Hey man,

- 33:06Speaker 1: I gotta give you love, you know, David, o't that
- 33:08Speaker 1: you know? Give us a little couple of credits out there.
- 33:11Speaker 1: I got it hit everybody though, who tabla is much?
- 33:19Speaker 1: Ain't doing? Ain't doing, David brother Man, we are excellent.
- 33:23Speaker 1: It gets only good. I appreciate well you're you're you're fantastic.
- 33:32Speaker 1: You guys have always been there for me. Uh with
- 33:35Speaker 1: Steve and I was doing the Neighborhood Awards. Anytime we
- 33:37Speaker 1: called to do anything, you guys have been there, rescuing
- 33:40Speaker 1: it with a strong faith and commitment. And uh and
- 33:42Speaker 1: you and you value your fans. And that's what I
- 33:45Speaker 1: really liked about it, about your career and what you've done.
- 33:48Speaker 1: And I've known you guys know a long time now,
- 33:51Speaker 1: over twenty years and so and you guys have been
- 33:54Speaker 1: consistent and I've seen you grown. But one of the
- 33:57Speaker 1: things I wanted to talk about, and you know, not
- 33:59Speaker 1: jokingly that I can you know, I can joke only
- 34:01Speaker 1: talk about David and Tamila's career because both of them
- 34:04Speaker 1: have phenomenal careers as singers and actors. And David he
- 34:08Speaker 1: decided one day he gonna do stand up. That's how
- 34:10Speaker 1: talented he is. He's just gonna decide on his reality show,
- 34:16Speaker 1: I'm gonna do stand up, right, And but no, no, no,
- 34:22Speaker 1: no no. But then he gonna go on tour. Though
- 34:27Speaker 1: you don't do it, do it, do it and not
- 34:31Speaker 1: afraid to do it. Got to make it, do to
- 34:34Speaker 1: do when you get a lot of keys. But here's
- 34:37Speaker 1: the thing about what I wanted to talk about on
- 34:39Speaker 1: this show, because I was talking. My show is about entrepreneurship,
- 34:42Speaker 1: Tamla and David, And you know, in this business, you
- 34:45Speaker 1: come you come in based on your talent, okay, and
- 34:49Speaker 1: and God that given both of you, individual to individual,
- 34:52Speaker 1: tremendous amount of talent. But I see over the years
- 34:55Speaker 1: you're starting to control your own destiny, okay, and I
- 35:00Speaker 1: you can talk to us a little bit about that.
- 35:01Speaker 1: And when did it really making you realize that you
- 35:03Speaker 1: know that you can actually book yourself, you can actually
- 35:07Speaker 1: create your own music production company. When did all that
- 35:11Speaker 1: start to fall in place? You know, we kind of
- 35:14Speaker 1: started back in I think we did our first album
- 35:17Speaker 1: in two thousand four right there somewhere there, and it's
- 35:21Speaker 1: because we've seen how the labels were treating artists, and
- 35:25Speaker 1: it was like, you know, I know how to do music.
- 35:29Speaker 1: I know that Tavila as one of those going with
- 35:31Speaker 1: the voices. So it was just like, let's do our own.
- 35:36Speaker 1: You know. At first, now, I'm gonna tell you, at
- 35:38Speaker 1: first then was like I ain't having it. She was like,
- 35:43Speaker 1: I'm not gonna be no solo album by myself and
- 35:46Speaker 1: go out there by herself. But I just believed in
- 35:49Speaker 1: so much of what we had I just said, let's
- 35:52Speaker 1: put the music together and put it out there, and
- 35:55Speaker 1: it's such good people will buy it. People, you know,
- 35:58Speaker 1: we love it. So we just decided to create our
- 36:00Speaker 1: own and I just believe in ownership. And you know,
- 36:04Speaker 1: seeing you guys, guys like you who started to control
- 36:08Speaker 1: their own narrative in this business and not allow people
- 36:12Speaker 1: to tell you that you can do this, you can't
- 36:14Speaker 1: do that, and that's you know, having good examples like
- 36:17Speaker 1: that helped as well. Well, you know, it's important. And
- 36:20Speaker 1: thank you for that compliment because I always tell people
- 36:23Speaker 1: I didn't. I didn't. There was no blueprint and and
- 36:26Speaker 1: I guess what was our afraid was Steve Harvey afraid? Yeah,
- 36:29Speaker 1: because unknown makes you're afraid, but you have to walk
- 36:33Speaker 1: past it. What you said, I was just about to see,
- 36:37Speaker 1: you have to do it afraid, and that's what that's
- 36:40Speaker 1: that's what you guys did, and that's what I that
- 36:43Speaker 1: I've just seen that develop over the years with with this.
- 36:46Speaker 1: And I look at the month of November and you guys, uh,
- 36:49Speaker 1: that's a Thanksgiving month for the Man family and the
- 36:51Speaker 1: month of November you have two big projects coming out
- 36:54Speaker 1: of November. You have the about the Us Against the
- 36:58Speaker 1: World's Secrets to our love, marriage and family. What You'll
- 37:01Speaker 1: be a book available novemb that will be on Harpercolums. Correct, Yes,
- 37:06Speaker 1: that's the one I want to get a copy of
- 37:08Speaker 1: so I can give it to my fans. And then
- 37:10Speaker 1: your first album drops, Us Against the World. The Love
- 37:14Speaker 1: Project drops November night. First, let's talk about the album,
- 37:17Speaker 1: because last time he was on my show earlier in
- 37:19Speaker 1: the year, we talked about that. Now we were it's October,
- 37:23Speaker 1: November's next month is about to happen, and any hiccups?
- 37:27Speaker 1: Is it where you wanted to be? Is everything timing
- 37:29Speaker 1: out like you wanted to want it to happen. What's
- 37:33Speaker 1: happened is it's a lot. We put so much at
- 37:36Speaker 1: one time where the body can't keep up with the work.
- 37:42Speaker 1: But I mean we've I've really enjoyed it to be
- 37:45Speaker 1: in the studio with David again after over fifteen years,
- 37:51Speaker 1: because it's think about I've been pulling teeth with him
- 37:53Speaker 1: to sing with me on my records, and he was like,
- 37:56Speaker 1: every time it's time to him to do it the
- 37:58Speaker 1: studio sessions, he finds something to do. Yeah, well, im
- 38:02Speaker 1: just hold on, hold on hold of that I would
- 38:06Speaker 1: be you know, David can sing a J David, I know,
- 38:08Speaker 1: I would joke around about his sing. He could sing that.
- 38:11Speaker 1: But you know, Tamla, you can sing. And that's why
- 38:15Speaker 1: it was so difficult for me to go come on,
- 38:18Speaker 1: so I thought you was gonna be on my It's
- 38:20Speaker 1: very it's very intimidating to sing with Tamela. Man, you
- 38:24Speaker 1: know what it's like, I know how this thing it's
- 38:28Speaker 1: not for you. It's not for you because it's you.
- 38:32Speaker 1: But the team that we put together, the writing team
- 38:37Speaker 1: that my son David J. Put together for this whole project.
- 38:40Speaker 1: They Taylor made the songs and the lyrics, everything just
- 38:45Speaker 1: for me. So it made it comfortable. I mean, they
- 38:49Speaker 1: made it very comfortable for us to get go in
- 38:52Speaker 1: and do the music. So that's what made it easy
- 38:54Speaker 1: for me because at first I was I was shaking
- 38:57Speaker 1: in my boost that first time you have I've seen
- 39:02Speaker 1: an acapella. I've seen her acapella. Okay, bringing down the house,
- 39:05Speaker 1: twenty thousand people just throw hard Mike on the front row.
- 39:09Speaker 1: She get up like you know know that you don't
- 39:11Speaker 1: even do the me me me me, oh child'n do
- 39:14Speaker 1: the scales. She don't do nothing, David, do this, do this, everybody,
- 39:22Speaker 1: this is our challenged you go, oh, just Steve Harbers,
- 39:25Speaker 1: just give her the mike, right just saying she don't
- 39:28Speaker 1: like oh me, Oh it's too late at night. Oh
- 39:32Speaker 1: it's too She don't do that. She don't do that.
- 39:35Speaker 1: She just starts singing, just singing. So I understand you've
- 39:38Speaker 1: being intimidated after all those credits. I just read and
- 39:42Speaker 1: you know you got a lot more credit. But you know,
- 39:45Speaker 1: you know, be a boy. That's how that's the talent
- 39:51Speaker 1: you got it. That's that's where you gotta go see
- 39:53Speaker 1: this show. You gotta go see this show because they're
- 39:54Speaker 1: very special. Tell us exactly how the show starts. What's
- 39:58Speaker 1: all happening in the show, and Haide ends can tell
- 40:02Speaker 1: me how that works, thank you. It starts with the
- 40:07Speaker 1: whole family on stage and we do this sick number,
- 40:10Speaker 1: this number called Us against the World. Is that you
- 40:12Speaker 1: know there's it's the title song to the album. It's
- 40:16Speaker 1: called Us against the World. So the whole family does
- 40:18Speaker 1: the US against the World songs and then David comes out,
- 40:22Speaker 1: David Jr. Comes out And had this big, huge party.
- 40:25Speaker 1: We were in rehearsal last night and I just heard
- 40:28Speaker 1: his his DJ foot y'all this board is rocking. The
- 40:32Speaker 1: plays party having to play going. Then my daughter Tia
- 40:37Speaker 1: is doing a tribute. I don't know if I want
- 40:39Speaker 1: to give away her tribute. I'm anyway, He's doing this
- 40:44Speaker 1: really good tribute to Arita Franklin. It's a queen and
- 40:48Speaker 1: it's a it's a really heartfelt tribute that she's doing.
- 40:52Speaker 1: And then I come out and do stand up. Then
- 40:54Speaker 1: Tabla comes out after immmission and just thankes us the
- 40:58Speaker 1: church for a second, and we interrupt the whole show
- 41:01Speaker 1: to encourage families, encouraged couples with the Love set. And
- 41:06Speaker 1: then in the middle of that, I'm gonna tell you
- 41:08Speaker 1: what happened to me yesterday in rehearsal from this love set.
- 41:13Speaker 1: It had me crying. He looked up and she said, Babe,
- 41:16Speaker 1: you can't do that because if I look down to
- 41:18Speaker 1: the crime, I'm gonna be done. You said the crying
- 41:24Speaker 1: like that, I'm gonna start crying. And then Tam just
- 41:27Speaker 1: took us straight out to church who were in rehearsal.
- 41:31Speaker 1: It was dead people that were working at the theater
- 41:34Speaker 1: where we were rehearsing yesterday. That will cry. So it's
- 41:38Speaker 1: that kind of movie. But that's the whole show right there.
- 41:40Speaker 1: I just laid out to you. Well, I'm gonna tell
- 41:42Speaker 1: you you know, I'm gonna be there. That's octo s.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Like I said, if I'm gonna if I'm gonna see
- 41:47Speaker 1: you for almost four or five days, I'm gonna have
- 41:49Speaker 1: to hug you. And don't give Rashaw McDonald no ticket.

- 41:55Speaker 1: because I support I believe, I believe in the Man.

- 42:06Speaker 1: Remember nine The album dropped, Us Against the World The

- 45:55Speaker 1: I went, boy, he just got paid. And back to
- 46:00Speaker 1: back NBA championships with the NBA Heat Championships and fame
- 46:04Speaker 1: and uh a game just follows this young man alone
- 46:07Speaker 1: and also on the phone is his mother, who is
- 46:10Speaker 1: the CEE you of its foundation. Please welcome to the show,
- 46:13Speaker 1: Mario Thomas and his mom, al Marie Chamas. Good morning.
- 46:19Speaker 1: How you doing. How are you okay? Well, okay, now
- 46:23Speaker 1: you're not You're not in the same room. So what
- 46:25Speaker 1: cities are each one? Are you calling from? Mario? I'm
- 46:29Speaker 1: calling from Detroit, Detroit, Michigan. And Mom, I'm calling from Charlotte,
- 46:35Speaker 1: North Carolina. That's Charlotte destroyed some good eating in Detroit
- 46:39Speaker 1: to Troy. This being revitalized. I know about that. And
- 46:43Speaker 1: you know you in in brick City there in Charlotte,
- 46:45Speaker 1: now Charlotte, North Carolina. I love that city. One of
- 46:48Speaker 1: my favorite cities there. So it's a fun place. So
- 46:53Speaker 1: here's there. Here's the fun thing about it. First of all,
- 46:55Speaker 1: thank you for coming on Money Making Conversation. Uh, thank
- 46:58Speaker 1: you for having us. First of all, I'm just let
- 47:00Speaker 1: you know this show is your show. So know that
- 47:02Speaker 1: this relationship that we're developing here is something that you
- 47:05Speaker 1: can call on. Mario, consider me like a big brother. Okay,
- 47:09Speaker 1: a big brother, you know if you need something and uh,
- 47:12Speaker 1: mom gonna call your mom. Called me your friend, Okay,
- 47:16Speaker 1: when you need something happening and promoting and things like that.
- 47:18Speaker 1: And that's what I developed this platform. And uh it's
- 47:21Speaker 1: taken off and as all, everybody's calling the show. But
- 47:25Speaker 1: here's here's the fun part about it. So Mario, I'm
- 47:27Speaker 1: reading your bio and you play basketball in Alaska. Okay,
- 47:33Speaker 1: now you know you know Mario, you know, I just
- 47:39Speaker 1: don't pitch it. I gotta see it like this. Black
- 47:42Speaker 1: people lay basketball in Alaska. A lot of people say that.
- 47:49Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. You know, you go, you
- 47:51Speaker 1: want to state championships in Alaska? So so so now
- 47:55Speaker 1: I'm telling here's the funny point. But it's two states
- 47:57Speaker 1: I want to visit. Alaska is one of those states.
- 48:00Speaker 1: And I think I'm gonna go there and uh next
- 48:03Speaker 1: year doing a youth survey. So tell me that the
- 48:06Speaker 1: why what would I get the experience when I come
- 48:09Speaker 1: to Alaska. Why is such a beautiful state. I'll tell
- 48:12Speaker 1: you this, the first time you come to Alaska, you
- 48:14Speaker 1: gotta do the cruise. You gotta do. You gotta do
- 48:16Speaker 1: the cruise that goes through uh, the mountains, the glaciers.
- 48:22Speaker 1: Um see all the wildlife and the beautiful scenery in Alaska.
- 48:26Speaker 1: That's that's what we're known for. That's the that's the
- 48:28Speaker 1: best part of Alaska. So I definitely recommend that. And then, um,
- 48:32Speaker 1: just go out and get some good food. You know,
- 48:33Speaker 1: We've got a good food. Got all types of different
- 48:36Speaker 1: religions out there and culture, so you know, the food
- 48:39Speaker 1: is very diverse out there and it's actually pretty good food.
- 48:42Speaker 1: And cruise of two things I recommend. Cool Ah, Marie,
- 48:45Speaker 1: how did you get your sign up to Alaska Military Military?
- 48:54Speaker 1: My husband was in the Military Air Force and so
- 48:57Speaker 1: we were there and I played the fourth so um Dr.
- 49:02Speaker 1: Mario was born that and we raised both of our
- 49:04Speaker 1: kids there. M nomber as you this now, you know,
- 49:08Speaker 1: being a mom and being and and and and watching
- 49:13Speaker 1: your son, you know, because he he was used in Alaska,
- 49:15Speaker 1: then he made the decision. I want to talk a
- 49:17Speaker 1: little bit about that. We're gonna get to the book
- 49:19Speaker 1: is the book ABC is a basketball which is really
- 49:23Speaker 1: important to the youth of America. But I also want
- 49:25Speaker 1: to talk about the journey because when you when you
- 49:28Speaker 1: when you an athlete, because you're you're you know, you're
- 49:33Speaker 1: McDonald's all American Mario, you go to a school like
- 49:37Speaker 1: Kansas and then you and your away from your family.
- 49:40Speaker 1: How did that affect because your father was your high
- 49:42Speaker 1: school coach? Correct? How did that? How did that affect?
- 49:46Speaker 1: How did that transition happen to you? Because that you
- 49:48Speaker 1: have all that all that that that protection, all that
- 49:52Speaker 1: close mentoring and all that you know he has your back.
- 49:55Speaker 1: And then the coach of bill self I believe it's
- 49:57Speaker 1: the coach of a cancer university recruited you to go
- 50:00Speaker 1: to Kansas. What did you have any homesickness spell? Homesick spells?
- 50:05Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I gotta get back. This is just the
- 50:07Speaker 1: right decision. How did you make the transition? Um? Actually
- 50:11Speaker 1: the transition was easy for me. Um. All my friends
- 50:14Speaker 1: played basketball. Um, I hang out with an older crowd.
- 50:16Speaker 1: So two of my best friends they went off to
- 50:19Speaker 1: play college basketball, and I was there the last of
- 50:21Speaker 1: my senior years. So UM, for me, just getting out.
- 50:24Speaker 1: That was my main focus, getting out of being being
- 50:26Speaker 1: a positive guy for the community and you know, showing
- 50:30Speaker 1: people that you can't make it about make it out
- 50:31Speaker 1: of Alaska, to make it big in sports world, and
- 50:34Speaker 1: you know that was my main focus. Who put a
- 50:35Speaker 1: lask on the message? Okay, all Marie, are your son
- 50:39Speaker 1: this foundation? You just ceo this foundation? Okay, let me
- 50:42Speaker 1: just ask you this because I was always important that
- 50:44Speaker 1: I feel athletes get back. I have a foundation of
- 50:48Speaker 1: understanding their role. What what role did you play? Are
- 50:52Speaker 1: you playing in the messaging and the foundation? Oh? The
- 50:57Speaker 1: role is just keeping the message alive and supporting the
- 50:59Speaker 1: vision and that Mario first came up with, which was
- 51:04Speaker 1: formulated when we lost a dear friend the breast cancer
- 51:07Speaker 1: and he just wanted to dedicate you know, time and
- 51:10Speaker 1: energy to supporting the cause. And so once that was
- 51:13Speaker 1: his vision, we went to work on making things happen
- 51:16Speaker 1: by connecting with various people in different communities and of
- 51:19Speaker 1: course Kansas has been one of our biggest supporters because
- 51:22Speaker 1: of the fact he was in school there and we
- 51:25Speaker 1: were blessed to be able to open up a Mario's closet,
- 51:27Speaker 1: which is located in the local hospital by things for
- 51:32Speaker 1: you know, breast cancer survivors. Now what what what local
- 51:35Speaker 1: is that in Kansas the hospital wing gets opened? Yeah
- 51:41Speaker 1: what large Maria hospital and it's actually a a closet
- 51:46Speaker 1: is that's the concept that it was a closet that
- 51:48Speaker 1: was a feasible and flexible and available first patients without
- 51:53Speaker 1: having to go different places. Especially when it comes down
- 51:56Speaker 1: to the hairy mogal process, which really interesting because when
- 52:00Speaker 1: I read your body or when you know, they bring
- 52:03Speaker 1: all kinds of everybody. My staff pitches me, show ideas,
- 52:06Speaker 1: guest ideas, and my older sisters she passed away to
- 52:09Speaker 1: breast cascer. And so so when I saw what you
- 52:11Speaker 1: was doing your foundation, that really that really I got
- 52:14Speaker 1: to help, you know, promote your brain and get your
- 52:17Speaker 1: word out. But you know, because you know, you're you know,
- 52:20Speaker 1: you're a talent athlete and you you raised your son right.
- 52:23Speaker 1: Ms Thomas, you raised it right, and that that has
- 52:26Speaker 1: to be said correctly because we have so many stories
- 52:28Speaker 1: about the misguided athlete, dysfunctional, don't have a relationship, you know,
- 52:34Speaker 1: being raised by somebody else's family. I'm so tired of
- 52:36Speaker 1: that store. You know, we're fortunate that our story is
- 52:42Speaker 1: we were able to raise our sign and support him
- 52:44Speaker 1: as well as his sister. And although we did this
- 52:46Speaker 1: in Alaska and we still have a good support system
- 52:49Speaker 1: in the lower forty eight as we called it, and
- 52:52Speaker 1: we were blessed to be able to put him in
- 52:53Speaker 1: a position to go and live with dreams. What is
- 52:57Speaker 1: that dream? Mario? What is that dream? You've been in Miami?
- 53:01Speaker 1: I know it was a dream down there. Being in
- 53:05Speaker 1: Miami was a benefit. The dream was always making it
- 53:08Speaker 1: to the NBA no matter where I was, That's what
- 53:10Speaker 1: I wanted to be. Oh, Miami boy, I've been down
- 53:13Speaker 1: to Miami. Mario. You were the Miami. I knew it
- 53:17Speaker 1: was the love Miami. Do you still you still have
- 53:19Speaker 1: a place down in Miami. You're all up in Detroit now,
- 53:21Speaker 1: what's going on? I'm just in Detroit of my girls
- 53:24Speaker 1: having a baby out here. But congratulation, appreciate it, okay? Uh?
- 53:29Speaker 1: Can I ask you your first child? I know? Okay? Cool?
- 53:34Speaker 1: And now how with that being said, being a father,
- 53:40Speaker 1: how did how did that did it change your outlook
- 53:42Speaker 1: on life or what? Talk to me about that? Um,
- 53:47Speaker 1: it did kind of change my outlook on life. You
- 53:49Speaker 1: know before before you have kids and being a teenager
- 53:52Speaker 1: in college you get to run wild and do what
- 53:54Speaker 1: everything I mean with their reason have fun. So um
- 53:59Speaker 1: I have. I had my first kid the year we
- 54:01Speaker 1: won the national championship. So it was it was a
