- 0:41crash -land it on the Monster Catchers Journal
- 0:43podcast. Today's episode isn't about capturing
- 0:50a rogue glyph in the windswept peaks of Talisman,
- 0:54or decoding a lost sigil from the tombs of echoing
- 0:58souls, no. Today's episode is a tale that's a
- 1:04little different. It's not about catching a glyph
- 1:07at all. Instead, we're returning to one of my
- 1:09favorite places in all of Nibiru. the verdant
- 1:11market. A lush sprawling bazaar draped in vines
- 1:16and bioluminescent lanterns nestled deep in the
- 1:19heart of the Greenstead region. You can smell
- 1:23the spices from five streets away and the buzz
- 1:26of haggling voices fills like a heartbeat. I
- 1:30was there chasing a rumor, an ancient relic known
- 1:33only as the Talisman of Nohr. Small jet black
- 1:37worn as a necklace and said to grant its bearer
- 1:40the ability to neutralize even the most evasive
- 1:44flying glyph. Lately, the sanctuary had been
- 1:48swarmed with sky -borne troublemakers, glyphs
- 1:51with wings like razors and talons itching for
- 1:54a duel, so I need an edge badly. I brought Orabeek,
- 1:59of course, my loyal companion. Luna tagged along
- 2:03with Merno, her stubborn horn -headed part meerkat,
- 2:09part rhinoglyph, Xenna joined us to riding side
- 2:13saddle with Ignazura, her sapphire coated tiger
- 2:16with ruby flame stripes that lit the path like
- 2:20a living torch. We didn't know what we were walking
- 2:23into because that night just so happened to be
- 2:27the festival of the sixfold leaf. Picture this,
- 2:32hundreds of Naberans weaving between stalls,
- 2:35laughter spilling over as children chased paper
- 2:38-winged bugs through the pathways, the air thick
- 2:41with the scent of roasted bloom fruit, and fermented
- 2:45jazzy milk. Everywhere I looked, people were
- 2:49in six petaled robes dyed in emerald, copper,
- 2:54and gold, each fold representing a blessing from
- 2:58the verdalis tree. said to be the heart of the
- 3:01market itself, shouts a blessed six to you, echoed
- 3:08from rooftops to cart. The crowd thickened, and
- 3:14before we knew it, Orbeek, Zentronaut, and I
- 3:17had gotten separated from Xena, Luna, and the
- 3:20other two glyphs. I called out, but my voice
- 3:23drowned beneath the merchant's booming merchant
- 3:26advertisement. Liquid starlight soap! And Glyph
- 3:30nipped two ropes. My stomach growled loudly.
- 3:34That's when I smelled it. A wave of grilled meat
- 3:37and spicy citrus hit me so hard it nearly knocked
- 3:40me back. I turned and saw a tall man standing
- 3:43behind a smoky wooden stall where long skewers
- 3:47of carnivora bloom sizzled above glowing coals.
- 3:51But it wasn't just the meat. It was the sauce.
- 3:55Thick, sticky, and greenish gold. The smell was
- 3:58earthy, citrusy, with a kick of something wild,
- 4:01Rodolus leaf sauce. Free samples, the man said,
- 4:06holding out a skewer. His eyes were shadowed
- 4:09by deep purple circles, and he looked like he
- 4:12hadn't slept in weeks. I'll take one, I said,
- 4:14unable to resist. The moment my teeth sank into
- 4:17the meat, time stopped. The flavor exploded.
- 4:21Sweet like sunset nectar, tangy like electrified
- 4:24lemons. and with a salty, smoky undertone that
- 4:28made my knees buckle. I don't even like meat
- 4:31that much, but I almost cried. How, I whispered,
- 4:34eyes wide. The man just smiled sadly and pointed
- 4:38at the bubbling pot of sauce behind him. That's
- 4:42the kind of market the Verdant is, where you
- 4:45lose people and find magic. Anyway, I kept moving,
- 4:50winding through alleys of hanging crystal fruits.
- 4:53and powdered dream fruit until I stumbled upon
- 4:58a strange, crooked little stall tucked between
- 5:00two large ones. The front table was covered in
- 5:05moth -bitten cloth and displayed only one item,
- 5:08a pocket watch -looking thing made from green
- 5:11brass, its face ticking backwards. That's when
- 5:15I heard a gravelly voice behind me. Ah, you're
- 5:18interested in the timepiece, are you? I turned
- 5:21to see a lanky man with wiry hair sticking up
- 5:26all over the place in all directions, leaning
- 5:30forward with fingers draped like spiders over
- 5:32the counter. It allows any glyph holding it to
- 5:36pause time for precisely fifty seconds. He continued,
- 5:43eyes gleaming. Yours for fifty, Baron. Baron?
- 5:47I blinked. I'd never heard of that currency before.
- 5:50I thought everyone used universified credits.
- 5:54Ah, no. No, miss. He sighed. I'm from Eastern
- 5:59Nibiru. We've got our own system. Old school.
- 6:03I'm a traveling salesman. Can't afford to pay
- 6:05the unification tax. I felt my face flush. I'm
- 6:10sorry. I didn't even know. I only have VAR dollars
- 6:13and VAR coins. He waved a hand. No worries. I
- 6:17can exchange. How much? He looked around, leaned
- 6:22in close, and whispered 500 VAR dollars. What?
- 6:26I gasped. That was practically robbery. I turned
- 6:30to leave when suddenly he whimpered, like a wounded
- 6:33pet. You don't want my family to eat tonight,
- 6:37he said, eyes welling with sparkly crocodile
- 6:39tears. I stared at him. He wasn't just playing
- 6:42me. He was practically performing a stage drama.
- 6:46Ugh, fine. I s - slapped the cash into his grimy
- 6:50hands, but this better work. He bowed deeply
- 6:54as I snatched the stopwatch from the stall and
- 6:57stormed off into the crowd, clutching the warm
- 7:00metal in my palm. I still wasn't sure if I'd
- 7:03just been scammed or if I'd brought something
- 7:07that could change everything, but that's the
- 7:09risk with these things, right? The stopwatch
- 7:13was warm. Almost too warm. I tucked it into my
- 7:20satchel, tried to shake off the filling I'd been
- 7:23swindled, and kept moving. The deeper I walked
- 7:26into the market, the more surreal things became.
- 7:30The booths weren't just stalls anymore, they
- 7:32were structures, towering with twisted wood and
- 7:36fluttering banners that glowed from within. One
- 7:41was shaped like a giant moth wing. Another had
- 7:47floating lanterns tethered to nothing, hovering
- 7:51above the heads of buyers who looked half -spirit,
- 7:54half -human. A child ran past me with a balloon
- 8:00shaped like a glyph, one I'd never seen before.
- 8:04All beaks and wisps and too many blinking eyes.
- 8:11That's when I saw it. A stall made entirely of
- 8:14living bark. pulsing slightly like it had a heartbeat.
- 8:19Twisted roots curled up the sides like skeletal
- 8:23fingers, and in the center, carved into the trunk
- 8:26of the tree, was a glowing green symbol. An old
- 8:30Nibirin rune, meaning truth hidden in shadows.
- 8:33I'd found it, the stall of the ancient mystic.
- 8:36But the crowd had thinned. The music quieted.
- 8:40It was like the world muffled itself when I stepped
- 8:43near. Aura Beak tilted his head and let out a
- 8:47soft ca -ru -ca -ru -ca -ru, sensing something
- 8:53was off. Even Centerknot, normally aloof, dropped
- 8:57down from my shoulder and crawled into my coat
- 9:00sleeve. I approached the stall slowly. Behind
- 9:03it stood a figure draped in moss green robes
- 9:06that shimmered like oil on water. Their face
- 9:09was hidden behind a bone -white mask. and etched
- 9:13with dozens of tiny moving glyphs, not glowing,
- 9:17moving, like the mask itself was whispering.
- 9:21Welcome, daughter of twilight. The voice wasn't
- 9:28loud, but it echoed inside my mind more than
- 9:30in my ears. I froze. How do you know who I am?
- 9:35The talisman of Noor has chosen to be found,
- 9:39and you are late. I swallowed. Do you have it?
- 9:43The mystic tilted their head, then reached beneath
- 9:46the folds of their robe and brawn out a box no
- 9:49bigger than a tarot deck. It was made of polished
- 9:53obsidian wood. Bound and single -braided silver
- 9:58vine that hissed when it moved. One question,
- 10:01the mystic said. Do you seek this power for battle
- 10:04or for protection? I hesitate it. A festival
- 10:08firework boomed somewhere far off. Protection,
- 10:11I said. My sanctuary, it's been invaded. Flying
- 10:14glyphs. They're aggressive. Coordinated. Something's
- 10:18stirring them up. The mystic nod at once. Then
- 10:21you may take it. But be warned. They push the
- 10:25box forward. Power draws hunger. And the talisman
- 10:29is not the only thing that woke up tonight. My
- 10:33fingers brush the box. Immediately a jolt ran
- 10:35up my arm. A pulse of soundless thunder that
- 10:39hit behind my eyes, I gasped. For just a second,
- 10:43I wasn't in the market anymore. I saw ash skies,
- 10:48wings of obsidian, a tower of roots rising from
- 10:51a sea of bones, and a single eye enormous blinking
- 10:55in a black sky. Then it was gone. I staggered
- 11:02back. Aura Beak let out a sharp cry and spread
- 11:05his wings defensively. What was that, I demanded,
- 11:09clutching the box to my chest. The mystic was
- 11:12already turning, robes fluttering like falling
- 11:15leaves. A glimpse, their voice faded into the
- 11:17crowd, of what you will have to face. I didn't
- 11:23find Luna or Xena until hours later. We had to
- 11:27climb to the highest root bridge, over the market
- 11:31just to spot them again. Luna was covered in
- 11:34flower garlands, and Xena had... bought two sacks
- 11:38of spice dust for no reason except that they
- 11:42smelled like old dreams. But when they saw my
- 11:45face, they knew something had happened. Something
- 11:48bigger than the talisman, bigger than any glyph.
- 11:52Something was waking up in Nibiru, and it had
- 11:55its eye on me. The market didn't feel the same
- 12:00after I left that stall. The music still played,
- 12:05the food still sizzled. Laughter still echoed,
- 12:08but to me, it all felt far away, distant, like
- 12:11I'd stepped out of sync with the festival rhythm.
- 12:15The box in my hand vibrated softly, like it had
- 12:18a heartbeat of its own. The braided silver vine
- 12:21around it had stopped hissing, but every time
- 12:24I glanced at it, I swore it shifted just slightly,
- 12:27as if watching me. I found Luna and Xenna near
- 12:31a stall. still holding the stuff that they had
- 12:36bought. When they saw me, the fun stopped. What
- 12:43happened? Xena asked, her voice dropped. You
- 12:47look like you just saw the Pelma. I think I saw
- 12:51something worse, I whispered. I showed them the
- 12:54box, neither of them touched it. Is that it?
- 12:58Luna said, eyeing it wearily. Try not it. The
- 13:04Talisman of Nohr. We didn't linger. The market
- 13:07was winding down anyway. Vendors were closing
- 13:10up, sweeping glitter leaf confetti from the pathways.
- 13:17Somewhere nearby, a group of musicians stuck
- 13:21up the final six -fold leaf hem, the one meant
- 13:25to bring peace to the coming dusk. We left quietly.
- 13:29I tucked the box safely in my satchel and followed
- 13:32the others through the southern routeway, an
- 13:35arch path framed by hanging moss and glowing
- 13:39sea pods. I glanced over my shoulder one last
- 13:42time, the verdant market shimmered in the distance.
- 13:48Warm and golden, like it had never changed, but
- 13:51something had. Just as we stepped beyond the
- 13:56final vendor, a breeze blew past us, sharp, cold.
- 13:59Out of place, Orabik flared his wings, feathers
- 14:03puffing, Myrno snarled low in his throat, and
- 14:07even Ignazura's fiery stripes dimmed to a dull
- 14:10ruby. We paused. I looked up, the sky was cloudless,
- 14:15but a single feather drifted down, black as the
- 14:18void. Dripping with a strange silver ink, I picked
- 14:23it up. Without thinking, the moment I touched
- 14:25it, a word echoed in my mind. Return. Nothing
- 14:30else, just that. Xena didn't say anything, but
- 14:33she stepped closer. Luna reached for my arm.
- 14:35We kept walking. None of us said it out loud,
- 14:38but we all felt it. Whatever I woke up in that
- 14:42market, it wasn't done with us, and it definitely
- 14:46wasn't done with me. We made it back to the sanctuary
- 14:54just before dawn. I barely had time to set my
- 14:58satchel down before the first screech split the
- 15:00sky. Dozens, no scores of flying glyphs darkened
- 15:05the horizon. Razor -winged ones, feathered shriekers,
- 15:09even a few I didn't recognize. Glyphs shaped
- 15:12like storm clouds with eyes and metal -winged
- 15:17kites that left scorched trails in the air. They
- 15:22weren't just here to chat, either. They came
- 15:25to fight. Orabique flew up with a battle cry,
- 15:29but even he couldn't take on all of them alone.
- 15:33Merno was growling low, stomping the ground like
- 15:35a rhino, ready to charge. Ignizora's ruby flames
- 15:39curled along her spine. Then I remembered the
- 15:44talisman. I gaped the box from my satchel. It
- 15:48hummed in my hand, sensing the presence of hostile
- 15:52fight. The braided silver vines curled and the
- 15:58obsidian lid opened on its own. Inside was the
- 16:01talisman of Nohr, jet black smooth as a void
- 16:04stone, and pulsing with veins of violet light.
- 16:08It almost looked like a small wing curled inward.
- 16:12Without hesitation I slipped it over Orabiq's
- 16:14neck. The moment it touched his feathers, everything
- 16:18changed. A shockwave of energy burst outward,
- 16:23invisible but felt. My ears popped. The flying
- 16:26glyph paused midair, just for a second confused,
- 16:30and then Orbeek moved. He blurred a flash of
- 16:33silver and gold and dove straight through the
- 16:36formation like a comet. His talons struck a talon
- 16:42wing that had always dodged him before. This
- 16:47time, it dripped like a stone, tangled in its
- 16:51own wings. It's working! Luna shouted, her hands
- 16:56glowing as Myrna launched spines upward, striking
- 17:02down and diving hook beak that had taunted us
- 17:09for weeks. Xena grinned, riding on Ignazor's
- 17:14back, the sapphire tiger leapt into the air,
- 17:17leapt and swatted a sky leech right out of the
- 17:22clouds. Every strike landed, every dodge turned
- 17:26into a counter -attack. It was like the flying
- 17:29glyphs forgot how to fly. Morbic shone brighter
- 17:34than ever, his wings stretched wide, the talisman
- 17:38glowing at his throat like a miniature black
- 17:42sun. He let out a cry that echoed across the
- 17:46hills, pure victorious. The glyphs scattered.
- 17:51Those that didn't fall fled, some into the storm
- 17:54fronts on the sanctuary, others disappearing
- 17:58into clouds of mist. Within minutes the sky was
- 18:03clear. We stood in silence, panting, smiling,
- 18:07covered in cuts and dust and bits of feather,
- 18:12but victorious. I looked at the talisman, now
- 18:18dimmed to a soft purple flicker. It worked. It
- 18:21really worked. But something still lingered in
- 18:23the air, a pressure. Like we'd just passed a
- 18:26test and something was watching to see if we'd
- 18:28pass the next one. Luna turned to me. You think
- 18:32they'll come back? I didn't answer right away.
- 18:35I was looking to the north, toward the storm
- 18:38-torn cliffs of the Stormscar Delta. If they
- 18:43do, I said softly, we'll be ready. After the
- 18:53sky battle, and after the glyphs were driven
- 18:56off, I finally sat down. My legs ached, my arms
- 19:00stung from cuts I hadn't noticed in the heat
- 19:04of the fight. My voice was hoarse from shouting
- 19:07commands, but my heart, that was steady. We protected
- 19:11the sanctuary for tonight. At least we were safe.
- 19:16I slumped down into my hammock, tucked between
- 19:20two long... Blooming whisper willows and exhaled
- 19:24for what felt like the first time in hours The
- 19:28air was thick with the scent of moss steam and
- 19:31cinched feathers Or a big perch nearby grooming
- 19:35his wings carefully Luna and Zeno were leading
- 19:38Mirno and Ignizoro with herbal salves and Bits
- 19:45of dried starfruit jerky. Oh Sorry tending not
- 19:50leading And then, sentronaut, I croaked. There
- 19:56was a rustle in my hood, followed by a tiny salute
- 20:00from my shoulder. Tea, I whispered. Please, strong,
- 20:04sweet, Nibiran. He gave a dramatic nod, adjusting
- 20:09his little explorer satchel. Yes, he has one
- 20:13and vanished into the shadows like a tiny...
- 20:19Serious librarian on a mission. I closed my eyes.
- 20:23The stars twinkled above, just barely visible
- 20:25through the tree canopy. I could hear soft music
- 20:28drifting from the sanctuary's common area. Someone
- 20:32had started playing a sky flute, the kind that
- 20:35only plays when the wind breathes through it
- 20:37just right. For a moment I let go. My thoughts
- 20:41wandered. I thought about the talisman, the power
- 20:43I felt when I used it. The eyes in the sky. I
- 20:48had seen... Sorry, the eye in the sky I had seen.
- 20:52The mystic's voice echoing in my bones. What
- 20:58did they mean when they said the talisman chose
- 21:00to be found? Why not? Or why now, sorry? Centernot
- 21:07reappeared triumphantly, holding a small mug
- 21:09with both hands, barely bigger than he was. The
- 21:15cup glowed faintly green. And the steam rose
- 21:20from it, curled into delicate leaf patterns.
- 21:23He handed it to me like it was a priceless relic.
- 21:27Blessed be little tea prince, I muttered. I took
- 21:31a sip. Instant warmth flooded my chest. The flavor
- 21:35was earthy with a dash of something bright, citrus
- 21:39pill in a mint root. The sweetness hit last,
- 21:43a caramel glaze that lingered on the tongue.
- 21:45It was perfect. Thank you, Zinternot, curled
- 21:48up in the hammock beside me and yawned like a
- 21:51squeaky hinge. I stared up at the sky again.
- 21:54Maybe we earned this peace just for tonight.
- 21:57Maybe not, but it's ours, and I'll guard it.
- 22:05Good night, Nibiru. Good night, Earth. Good night,
- 22:10everybody and all of the solar systems that inhabit
- 22:15what is space. Stay smart, keep your glyphids
- 22:22ready, and may the stars shine down on you, and
- 22:30Dresthar keep his peace with you. Bye now, see
- 22:37you next time, travelers, and Monster Catchers
- 22:39abound.
