- 0:00Welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio, a program for teens and almost
- 0:04teens to better understand that the gospel of Jesus Christ is relevant in their
- 0:08lives, and it's a place where your questions about faith and religion can be answered.
- 0:13And now, here's your host, Deacon Al.
- 0:16Good evening, and welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 0:20I am Deacon Al Lundy, a permanent deacon of the Peoria Diocese,
- 0:24and we come to you every Saturday and Sunday evening on Catholic Spirit Radio
- 0:28to bring you the good news of Jesus Christ,
- 0:30the gospel of our Lord, that we hear during our Mass on the weekends,
- 0:34and during the week even.
- 0:36And we talk about this weekend's Mass and what the readings mean to us and how
- 0:40they affect us in our lives.
- 0:42So this is the 23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time.
- 0:46It's hard to believe we're into September already. Things are just kind of rushing
- 0:51through us this year. It feels like a four-month year.
- 0:54Like we just got rid of we just got over christmas and
- 0:57we're knocking on the door to easter already just going
- 1:00so so fast but uh we had labor day
- 1:03this week and i hope you had a good labor day i hope you got a chance to have
- 1:08the day off some people didn't but hopefully a lot of you did and but mostly
- 1:12i hope you took time to give thanks to god for the work that you have for the
- 1:17work you want For those of you who are unemployed or underemployed,
- 1:21hopefully you will have your prayers answered to have the income and the work that you need.
- 1:28And there's a dignity to work. There's dignity to labor.
- 1:31That's something you should want to do is to be active in your lives and to
- 1:35be productive in your lives.
- 1:37It's also a good time for employers to think about how they treat laborers.
- 1:41Because as I say, there's a dignity to work, but there's also a dignity for the worker.
- 1:47It's important to remember that at the end of our lives, for those of you who
- 1:52are employers, no one at the gates of heaven is going to ask you what your markup
- 1:56was or what your profit margin was or how did you do third quarter.
- 2:01Those questions aren't going to come up. It really doesn't matter.
- 2:04I mean, it's great that you've been successful. I mean, that's wonderful.
- 2:08God bless you for being able to do that.
- 2:11It takes a real skill to be an employer, especially in these days.
- 2:16This economy to be a business owner.
- 2:18It's a very difficult job, but it's not about what you do that matters.
- 2:25It's about who you are. Are you forgiving?
- 2:28Do you have gratitude for your blessings? Are you charitable with the things that you have?
- 2:35That's what God's going to look at, not your earnings for the quarter.
- 2:40So it's great to have a good business and be good to add it,
- 2:45but it's better that you be a good disciple.
- 2:49So how do you treat others? How do you treat the people you serve with your
- 2:52product or service? How do you treat your employees?
- 2:55That's what really matters. So make sure that that's what your real effort goes to.
- 3:01And hopefully the success will be partially a result of the way you treat others.
- 3:08So again, happy Labor Day. Big weekend this weekend for the church.
- 3:13Sunday, we're canonizing two new saints, really wonderful young men.
- 3:18They lived about a century apart, but they had a lot in common.
- 3:21So we had St. Carlo Acutis and St. Pierre Giorgio Frisati.
- 3:27These were both young men who were truly in love with the Eucharist,
- 3:32great defenders of the Catholic faith, great evangelists. Certainly most of
- 3:37the attention is being paid to St.
- 3:39Carlo Acutis, a young man who was very active on the internet and had a huge
- 3:46following and was a great defender of the Catholic faith, even as a young boy.
- 3:50And great love for the body and
- 3:53blood of Christ and spoke eloquently on his YouTube and Facebook and things
- 3:59of that sort of his love for his Catholic faith and for his God and died at
- 4:06a very young age and is the first millennial who's being canonized.
- 4:11So that's really quite an event, especially if you're a young person today who
- 4:16was affected by the words and the actions of Carlos. I'm not going to go through
- 4:20the process of becoming a saint.
- 4:22There's a lot of controversy, especially among non-Catholics, about that.
- 4:26But I just want to clarify what a saint is, because there seems to be a lot
- 4:31of questions about that.
- 4:33And a saint is someone, a canonized saint.
- 4:36First of all, a saint is anyone in the presence of God, in the beatific presence of God in heaven.
- 4:42They're a saint. A canonized saint, canonized merely means they've been added
- 4:47to a list. That's what a canon is. It's just, it's a list.
- 4:50Canon law is a list of church laws, okay?
- 4:54The canon of the Bible, the list of books included in the compendium of the Bible, that's a canon.
- 5:01So a canon is merely a list. So when we say a saint has been canonized,
- 5:05it means they've been added to a special list that the church keeps of people
- 5:09who they believe have proven that they are in the presence of God.
- 5:14And they prove that through different ways.
- 5:16One way is through the way they lived their life. What is the example they set?
- 5:21What we look for in a saint is life of heroic virtue.
- 5:27I think if you look at the biography of Carlos, you would see that.
- 5:31You look at any of the saints, any of the canonized saints, you will see a very
- 5:37holy life, not necessarily a life that began holy, but a life that became holy.
- 5:42And through that, they were able to not only grow closer to Christ,
- 5:47but to bring others closer to Christ. These are our heroes.
- 5:50This is our hall of famers, as it were for our Catholic faith.
- 5:54The church says, here are people that we believe.
- 5:57Have come into the presence of God because of this.
- 6:01And they give the evidence for that sainthood.
- 6:07So all the saints you hear about, they're worth investigating.
- 6:10There's some wonderful books that give short biographies of the saints.
- 6:13I use one, Saint of the Day, that I look at nearly every day to read about the saint for that day.
- 6:20And there's some beautiful stories in there.
- 6:23And the large majority of them have all the evidence to back them up as to what
- 6:28they did in their life to be these heroes of virtue for us.
- 6:32So that's the sainthood. And so this weekend, we pray for Carlos and for Pietro
- 6:39and hope you will join the church in their celebration that these two fine young
- 6:45men are known to be now in the presence of our God.
- 6:49So just a little bit about sainthood and about what's going on in the church
- 6:53today. We're going to pause for just a few minutes.
- 6:55We're going to come back and look at the readings from the Mass on the 23rd
- 6:59Sunday of Ordinary Time. You're listening to Catholic Spirit Radio.

- 8:45The noble gift of our sexuality is not something to be demeaned.
- 8:50Regrettably, pornography, fornication, and adultery are rampant today.
- 8:56If we want to be influential as Catholic and moral leaders in the domestic church
- 9:00of our home, we must be chaste.
- 9:03We can't allow ourselves to be degraded, to lose our crucial power of spiritual
- 9:10leadership due to this sin.
- 9:12Our family needs us to be their moral heroes.
- 9:15We cannot submit to the temptation of unchastity.
- 9:20And if we should fall, we need to immediately repent, go to confession,
- 9:25and get back in the fight to be champions of chastity.
- 9:29We can't give an inch to these dark temptations. Pornography is always wrong and disordered.
- 9:36It unfailingly leaves its wound, doing grave harm to the user,
- 9:41his or her family, as well as the so-called performers who make pornography,
- 9:46who are dehumanized and used as objects of another's pleasure.
- 9:51With pornography, one takes pleasure
- 9:53at the expense of the degradation of others as well as one's self.
- 9:58Listen, quote, love takes no pleasure in other people's sins,
- 10:02but delights in the truth.
- 10:05First Corinthians 13, 6. You see, we are temples of the Holy Spirit,
- 10:09as are those involved in making pornography.
- 10:12Quote, your body, you know, is the temple of the Holy Spirit.
- 10:17First Corinthians 6, 19.
- 10:18We must win this fight at all costs. The stakes are too high.
- 10:23You and I are too good for unchastity. Mercifully, our Lord Jesus is there to
- 10:28do most of the fighting for us if we only turn to Him. Jesus is your champion.
- 10:34I'm Jim Littleton, forming FaithfulFamilies.com.

- 11:45which I think is really cool, because then while you're working around the house,
- 11:48you can have Catholic Spirit Radio on in the background and be listening.
- 11:53Terrific programming all throughout the day. So we hope you'll join us that way as well.
- 11:57So our readings this weekend, 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, begin with the Book of Wisdom.
- 12:03And then we have a letter from St. Paul to Philemon. And Philemon's an interesting
- 12:07character. We'll talk about that a little bit later. and then our gospel is from the gospel of Luke.
- 12:14So let's get started and see what we have here. A reading from the book of Wisdom.
- 12:19Who can know God's counsel or who can conceive what the Lord intends?
- 12:24For the deliberations of mortals are timid and unsure are our plans.
- 12:29For the corruptible body burdens the soul.
- 12:32And the earth and shelter weighs down the mind that has many concerns.
- 12:36And scarce do we guess the things on earth and what is within our grasp we find with difficulty.
- 12:42But when things are in heaven, who can search them out?
- 12:46Or whoever knew your counsel except you who had given wisdom and sent your Holy Spirit from on high.
- 12:52And thus were the paths of those on earth made straight. The Word of the Lord.
- 12:57So in the book of wisdom coming from the Old Testament, We're being reminded
- 13:02of our human limitations as compared to God's unlimited authority, unlimited knowledge.
- 13:09Even the things we know about the world around us, we take centuries to discover,
- 13:16centuries to figure out.
- 13:18But we have such great wisdom out of the Old Testament.
- 13:21Where did that come from? Who figured out all these things?
- 13:26Well, they were inspired through God, through the work of the Holy Spirit.
- 13:30We know things about our faith that we couldn't possibly discern any other way
- 13:34if it wasn't through the guidance of someone with vastly more knowledge than we have.
- 13:41And I think it's good for our own humility that we recognize there's a lot of
- 13:46things we still don't know.
- 13:48There's a lot of things we take out of faith. We find the truth in it,
- 13:52but we can't say exactly why it works, but we know it works.
- 13:57You can look at the seasons. You can look at, I'm always fascinated by hurricanes
- 14:02and tidal waves and earthquakes.
- 14:05Everybody says, well, why does God give us earthquakes? Well,
- 14:08it's a brilliant design.
- 14:10I mean, the earth breathes. The earth is a living, moving thing.
- 14:13If we didn't have volcanoes and earthquakes, this planet would have exploded long ago.
- 14:19This is the pressure valve. The same with hurricanes. It's a pressure valve
- 14:23for our weather system. But we need the weather system in order for animals
- 14:26to live, crops to grow, for us to live.
- 14:29We need that change in temperatures and humidity and precipitation.
- 14:35And so God's created this incredible, incredible system that's so complex.
- 14:42It's nothing we could ever create. I laugh when people talk about these billionaires
- 14:48who want to build a shield for the sun to be able to control the sunlight on
- 14:52the earth. I mean, such arrogance, such egotism.
- 14:57The design that we have is perfect.
- 15:01And yes, some of the actions of our environment are extremely violent.
- 15:05But without them, the earth couldn't exist.
- 15:09The ice age was needed. I mean, we marvel at the mountains and the canyons and the rivers.
- 15:15We only have those because of the devastation of glaciers.
- 15:19So don't be so arrogant as to think you can we know everything we don't or that
- 15:26we can learn everything there is to learn we can't.
- 15:30But God has given us the knowledge that we need for so many things,
- 15:34especially for our salvation.
- 15:36We didn't figure this out. This isn't something that the church created or man
- 15:41created, this whole journey of salvation.
- 15:45This was all planned out thousands and thousands of years ago by an almighty God,
- 15:51someone with unlimited wisdom, unlimited knowledge, who was just by speaking
- 15:57the words able to create this incredible universe.
- 16:01So this is kind of a continuation of that humility that we talked about last
- 16:05week, that need to approach God with humility, to be able to understand that
- 16:10we are not the creator. We are his favorite creation, but we are not the creator.
- 16:16And when we try to be the creator, it's to our own doom.
- 16:20Our second reading is Paul to Philemon.
- 16:24Philemon was one of the church leaders of the Colossian church.
- 16:31I always say the word wrong. Colossae was what we now call, is in Turkey.
- 16:37It was also known as Phrygia.
- 16:39And it's a region in Turkey where Paul had established a church.
- 16:43Paul is now a prisoner in Rome.
- 16:47And while a prisoner, at different times, he had different scribes working with
- 16:52him because his eyesight was failing. He was pretty much blind.
- 16:56He talks about that in his writings.
- 16:59So he has these various scribes. Mark was with him for a while.
- 17:04Luke was a scribe with Paul for a while. And at this point right now,
- 17:08he's got a young man that was sent to him by the church leader out of the Colossians,
- 17:14from the Colossians, he was one of his slaves.
- 17:18And so he sent him to Paul to help Paul out because he knew Paul whose health was failing.
- 17:26Pardon me. So the young man's name is Onesimus.
- 17:31So Paul writes to Philemon about Onesimus because Paul knows he's about to die.
- 17:37He's going to release Onesimus, but rather than just set him free,
- 17:40he's sending him back to Philemon and begging Philemon to, rather than treat
- 17:45him as a slave, treat him as a freeman.
- 17:48So he says, I, Paul, an old man, and now also a prisoner for Christ Jesus,
- 17:53urge you on behalf of my child, Onesimus, whose father I've become in my imprisonment.
- 17:59I'm sending him that is my own heart back to you.
- 18:02I should have liked to retain him for myself so that he might serve me on your
- 18:06behalf in my imprisonment for the gospel, but I do not want to do anything without
- 18:11your consent, so that the good you do might not be forced but voluntary.
- 18:17Perhaps this is why he was away from you for a while, that you might have him
- 18:20back forever, no longer as a slave, but more than a slave, a brother,
- 18:25beloved especially to me, but even more so to you, a man and in the Lord,
- 18:31So if you regard me as a partner, welcome him as you would me. The word of the Lord.
- 18:37So Paul is asking Philemon for a huge change of heart to say,
- 18:42this slave that you have loaned to me, I could have kept, but I'm sending him
- 18:47back to you not to be your slave,
- 18:49but in hope that you'll treat him now as a brother, as a fellow Christian.
- 18:54Because Paul changed his attitude about this young man. And this young man has
- 18:58changed who he is in the eyes of Christ.
- 19:01And now he's asking Philemon to change his view of his slave.
- 19:06I'm always fascinated by people who say, well, the Bible supports slavery.
- 19:11No, that's not what this is saying.
- 19:13Well, Paul didn't free him. No, he didn't. He wasn't Paul's slave to free.
- 19:18Scripture doesn't support slavery. Scripture recognizes that slavery existed.
- 19:25But the slavery of the apostolic time is a completely different slavery than
- 19:31what we talk about in modern times.
- 19:33These weren't people who were bought at auction and mistreated.
- 19:37The slaves in apostolic times, most of them, they applied for the job.
- 19:43I mean, some of them were captives from war. Part of the standard of war was
- 19:48when you conquer to people, you would take their best and their brightest to
- 19:54serve your community, to make your community stronger.
- 19:58So that's what we see, which is a completely different sort of slavery.
- 20:02And they didn't keep them forever. They could keep them for seven years,
- 20:06and then they had to release them.
- 20:08Oftentimes, when they were released, they had nothing to be released to.
- 20:12They were in a foreign country. They had no job. What they knew how to do was
- 20:16the work they did in that household.
- 20:17So they often would hire the slave back into the household to continue to do his work.
- 20:25But it wasn't the type of slavery that we think of today.
- 20:29So here's a man who wasn't dragged in chains to Rome to serve with Paul. He went willingly.
- 20:36He was asked to go as part of his service to the family he served to go help
- 20:41Paul. He did that. He stayed for quite a while.
- 20:44And now Paul's going to die and wants this young man to be back home.
- 20:49He sends him back to Philemon, his master, but begs Philemon to look at him
- 20:54differently now, and no longer as a slave, but as a brother.
- 20:58And Christ asks us to do the same thing with people around us,
- 21:02to look for the best in them, as Paul did, to change our attitudes about them,
- 21:09to help them go back to a better life than they're in now.
- 21:13And we see that through these writings. So it's a good lesson for us.
- 21:18I think about my days as a scout leader.
- 21:21I kind of modeled it after this. The parents would send their kids to scouting
- 21:25to be better prepared to go back and serve the community and serve the family
- 21:31as better young men than they were when they began.
- 21:35And so in a way that's very similar to what we see Paul asking for.
- 21:41In our gospel, it's the gospel of Luke. This is from chapter 14.
- 21:46Luke writes, Great crowds were traveling with Jesus, and he turned and addressed them.
- 21:51If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children,
- 21:56brothers and sisters, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
- 22:01Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
- 22:07Which of you, wishing to construct a tower, does not first sit down and calculate
- 22:11the cost to see if there's enough for its completion?
- 22:14Otherwise, after laying the foundation and finding himself unable to finish
- 22:17the work, the onlookers should laugh at him and say, this one began to build
- 22:22but did not have the resources to finish.
- 22:25Or what kind of king, marching into battle, would not first sit down and decide
- 22:30whether with 10,000 troops he can successfully oppose another king?
- 22:35Advancing him and upon him with 20,000 troops. But what if?
- 22:40If not, well, he's still far away. You send a delegation to ask for peace terms.
- 22:45In the same way, any one of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot
- 22:50be my disciple. The gospel of the Lord.
- 22:53Again, another verse that seems to upset a lot of people. Well,
- 22:57God wants you to hate your parents.
- 22:59No, God wants you to love him them more than you love them.
- 23:04Not hate as in despise them or want ill on them, but what God says is,
- 23:10if you really want to transform yourself into the image and likeness of Christ,
- 23:17then your love of Christ, God, has to come before your love for anything else,
- 23:23even before your love for yourself.
- 23:25And there again, we're talking about this humility issue.
- 23:28If you think more of yourself than you do of God, you can't possibly transform
- 23:33yourself into the image and likeness of God because you're too good.
- 23:36You say, well, I'm not going to lower myself to that standard.
- 23:40No, you have to put everything else lower than God so that you can raise God
- 23:45to the level he deserves.
- 23:47So it's not hate your brothers and sisters. It's want to serve God more.
- 23:52And by loving God more, you'll love others better. That's something that a lot
- 23:56of people have trouble grasping.
- 23:57To me, that's the real joy of the ordained life, is that you're willing to put
- 24:06love of God before love of family.
- 24:09And that's really hard for some to do, and it doesn't mean that you don't love
- 24:13your family, just that you love God more.
- 24:17And Christ says, if you want to follow me, if you really want to transform yourself
- 24:21to be Christ-like, then you can't put the desire or the love of anything else first.
- 24:30How do you do that? I mean, how do you do that? How do you concern yourself
- 24:36with God more than your child?
- 24:38People say, well, that's barbaric. You can't do that. But it's by putting God's
- 24:42love first and transforming yourself to be more Christ-like that you will love
- 24:46your child even more because you will treat him the way Christ treats you.
- 24:53It's hard. Being a Christian is hard. Jesus tells us over and over again,
- 24:58this is the hard way in. This is the narrow gate.
- 25:02This is the locked door that you have to get through. It's not easy being Christian.
- 25:07God demands a lot of us, a lot from us.
- 25:13But it's the person who's willing to do that that's going to gain the most,
- 25:18and not necessarily in this world, but be beloved by God in the next.
- 25:24So, how are you going to transform yourself to this degree? It happens through prayer.
- 25:30God, give me the humility to follow you.
- 25:33God, take away my desire, my lust for other things and other people,
- 25:38and let me love you first.
- 25:40So, it all begins with prayer and with a relationship with Christ.
- 25:44For me, I find that at the Mass, and I think that's where you'll find it as
- 25:51well, is through the Eucharist.
- 25:53Which is what our two young men who are being canonized into sainthood did with
- 25:59their lives, and look at the joy that it's brought them now. Be a saint.
- 26:04We should all be saints in the making. It's not impossible.
- 26:08It just takes commitment and perseverance and the love of God.
- 26:13May Almighty God bless you, protect you from all evil, and bring you to everlasting life.
