- 0:38Speaker 2: And that information will come directly to me and guess
- 0:41Speaker 2: what you be on to show me? How about that? Good?
- 0:45Speaker 1: Now, let's get this show starting. Have you ever thought
- 0:48Speaker 1: about starting a business? If so, why did or didn't
- 0:51Speaker 1: you do it? Have you ever hired the wrong people
- 0:55Speaker 1: and didn't do a background check. Have you maybe even
- 0:58Speaker 1: hire a relative because you're your family recommended them, like
- 1:02Speaker 1: your mother, your mama? Have you ever hired someone just
- 1:06Speaker 1: because they fit into your budget but they didn't have
- 1:09Speaker 1: the knowledge or do the job correctly? Come on, now,
- 1:14Speaker 1: what about starting a business without a budget, of going
- 1:16Speaker 1: into business with someone you didn't really know?
- 1:20Speaker 2: Have I hit a nerve here. Maybe I have.
- 1:23Speaker 1: And some of you think what I'm saying isn't that
- 1:25Speaker 1: big of a deal. Think again, think twice on that. Now, well,
- 1:31Speaker 1: I'm here to tell you that it is. And one
- 1:34Speaker 1: no one knows that better than me. How did I
- 1:36Speaker 1: know this because I had to graduate from the dumb,
- 1:39Speaker 1: dumb school, that's right, school of hard knocks to get
- 1:43Speaker 1: where I am today. And I almost lost my business
- 1:46Speaker 1: in the process. Okay, let's go down memory lane. And
- 1:50Speaker 1: so it ain't good for me, but I'm trying to
- 1:52Speaker 1: help everybody out. It's the honesty, you know, raise the
- 1:55Speaker 1: hand in classroom time. In twenty fourteen, I created my
- 1:59Speaker 1: company called thirty eight to fifteen Media, Inc. A now
- 2:03Speaker 1: multi award winning marketing and branding production company in Atlanta, Georgia.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Weren't always like that now.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I started my company as an idea and began hiring
- 2:14Speaker 1: people to fill their open positions. Were they the best
- 2:18Speaker 1: qualified people for the position? No, but I knew them.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I had long term relationships with them, and I believe
- 2:26Speaker 1: they could do certain things. That's the number one mistake
- 2:30Speaker 1: most business owners make. They hire people because they feel
- 2:34Speaker 1: comfortable with them, not because they're the best person to hire.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Best of all, I had no control or the worst
- 2:41Speaker 1: of all, I had no control of my admin, my
- 2:45Speaker 1: budget and not balance, and my revenue was none existent,
- 2:48Speaker 1: which means I hired people it didn't even have a
- 2:50Speaker 1: plan to make money. By the time twenty twenty three
- 2:55Speaker 1: year rolled around, the doors to my company were about
- 2:57Speaker 1: to close. I had to make some touch decisions. Yeah,
- 3:00Speaker 1: here I am today giving you advice on how not
- 3:03Speaker 1: to make the same mistakes that I did. How did
- 3:06Speaker 1: I manage to recover from this situation by recognizing where
- 3:10Speaker 1: I went wrong, correcting the issues that I had faced,
- 3:14Speaker 1: and most important, and figuring out what I wanted from
- 3:17Speaker 1: my company. I had to make hard choices. I had
- 3:20Speaker 1: to make hard decisions. I had to have a plan
- 3:22Speaker 1: in place. I had to have a budget. I had
- 3:25Speaker 1: to look at myself in the eyes, said Rashaan McDonald,
- 3:28Speaker 1: you are screwing up.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Woof. That's why I'm doing this show so you won't
- 3:35Speaker 2: have to look in the mirror. Maybe you will.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Maybe you're looking in that mirror right now. Maybe you are,
- 3:40Speaker 1: and maybe you should. Because it's honesty times. This show
- 3:42Speaker 1: about honesty. Now, now I'm here to share that lesson
- 3:45Speaker 1: that I've learned with you, my listening audience, they help
- 3:49Speaker 1: me do that. I partnered up with Amazon Business, a
- 3:52Speaker 1: platform launcher in twenty fifteen by Amazon who has spent

- 4:41Speaker 1: you that running the business takes a lot of your time.
- 4:44Speaker 1: You have artists to place, expenses to track, and people
- 4:47Speaker 1: to manage. Sometimes it feels like there are never enough
- 4:49Speaker 1: hours in that day, twenty four hours. I would tell
- 4:52Speaker 1: people that ain't enough time. For me sometime. Basically, all
- 4:55Speaker 1: I'm saying is that we can all use some more
- 4:57Speaker 1: hours in the day. That's where Amazon Business comes in.
- 5:01Speaker 1: They're truly a time saver because they offer smart insights
- 5:06Speaker 1: to help you make the most of the limited hours

- 5:38Speaker 1: to the table. Improve visibility and to spend, identify purchasing
- 5:42Speaker 1: trends by tracking purchases made by individuals and groups within

- 5:52Speaker 1: for optimizing spend, such as a supplier consolidation, both purchasing
- 5:57Speaker 1: and tax exemptions.

- 6:50Speaker 1: about winning, That's what you show about helping you win,
- 6:53Speaker 1: or maybe even sneaking some well earned vacation time with
- 6:57Speaker 1: your friends or family. The Amazon Business account it's free
- 7:01Speaker 1: and there's no spending minimum.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Do you have time for your business? I love it.
- 7:08Speaker 1: People want to start a business, but to do they
- 7:11Speaker 1: have time? Or they have they set of time? Do
- 7:13Speaker 1: they understand what it takes to run a business? I
- 7:15Speaker 1: tell people this all the time. I wake up at
- 7:18Speaker 1: four thirty am. As soon as I said it word
- 7:21Speaker 1: four thirty am, they go ooh, hey, hey, hey, just
- 7:24Speaker 1: Monday through Friday. People always ask what are you doing
- 7:28Speaker 1: at four thirty a m. Well, first of all, I'm
- 7:30Speaker 1: waking up. And I tell everybody, everybody every time when
- 7:34Speaker 1: I wake up at four thirty, when that alarm clock
- 7:36Speaker 1: goes off, I'm not a happy camper. But you got
- 7:39Speaker 1: to have rules in place to win. At four thirty
- 7:43Speaker 1: that get up, I go stretch. Nowadays, I'm trying to
- 7:49Speaker 1: reduce stress in my life. I used to watch TV
- 7:52Speaker 1: and stretch at the same time, so now I don't
- 7:55Speaker 1: do it watch TV anymore.
- 7:57Speaker 2: I just stretch for.
- 7:58Speaker 1: It gives me a nice relax time thirty to forty
- 8:01Speaker 1: five minutes where I'm just stretching and just thinking about
- 8:04Speaker 1: things and just kind of like meditating. So I do that.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Then I get I read the newspaper. Then I start
- 8:12Speaker 1: my day. I go over to the office and I'm ready.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I'm all prepared and ready to go. And that's what
- 8:18Speaker 1: I have to tell people. You have to have a
- 8:19Speaker 1: starting time. Anybody who says, hey, I'm not a morning person,
- 8:24Speaker 1: or anybody who hits the snooze person or hits the
- 8:26Speaker 1: snooze butting that person right there is not trying to
- 8:30Speaker 1: be successful, not at all.
- 8:31Speaker 2: I once gave a speech at the.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Lenthonio Chamber of Commerce, which is right outside of Atlanta, Georgia.
- 8:37Speaker 1: They invited me to speak about how to be a
- 8:39Speaker 1: successful business owner. Now, when you talk about success, you
- 8:43Speaker 1: have to admit your mistakes. And here's one of them. Okay,
- 8:47Speaker 1: I got many, but here's one of them in particular
- 8:49Speaker 1: that I want to tell you about. In eineighteen ninety two,
- 8:52Speaker 1: that's when depth Comedy Jam was big on HBO. I
- 8:55Speaker 1: opened a comedy club in Houston, Texas. It was called
- 8:58Speaker 1: Hip Hop Comedy Stop. I had just done Death Comedy Jail.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Me and Dave Chapelle shared the same stage. I went
- 9:05Speaker 1: into business with somebody I didn't even know. Hear me
- 9:08Speaker 1: that I wanted into the business with somebody I didn't
- 9:12Speaker 1: even know. He was a stand up comic. I was
- 9:15Speaker 1: a stand up comic. We both liked telling jokes. It
- 9:17Speaker 1: made sense, right, so naturally we thought we'd be good
- 9:21Speaker 1: business partners. No background checks, nobody in contract. That's like
- 9:25Speaker 1: saying you love chicken. Your friend makes good chicken, so
- 9:28Speaker 1: let's open.
- 9:28Speaker 2: The chicken business. It does not work like that. You're
- 9:31Speaker 2: trying to run a business.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I didn't know my partner's habits, his work ethics, or
- 9:37Speaker 1: even if he knew how to run a business. But
- 9:39Speaker 1: the club became incredibly popular. We had lines out the door.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Tickets went on sale Monday and we were sold out
- 9:46Speaker 1: by Thursday.
- 9:47Speaker 2: We were lucky.
- 9:48Speaker 1: The club seated two hundred and fifty people and by
- 9:50Speaker 1: nine pm the room was packed.
- 9:53Speaker 2: I could sure back then in ninety two.
- 9:56Speaker 1: I'm sure I could have used a business la Amazon
- 10:00Speaker 1: Business back then, especially with their bulk buying feature. Just
- 10:03Speaker 1: dropping a little hint is before their time. But bare
- 10:07Speaker 1: I was doing a lot of bulk thing tarlet people, napkins, glasses, drinks, water.
- 10:14Speaker 1: I was doing a lot of bulk buying back then.
- 10:17Speaker 1: If you're doing that bulk buying, listen up. That's what
- 10:19Speaker 1: I'm talking about. This is what Amazon Business can bring
- 10:22Speaker 1: to the table. If you're seeking a business partner will
- 10:25Speaker 1: get a great name recognition. Amazon Business is open available
- 10:30Speaker 1: twenty four seven.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Please don't go anywhere. We'll be right back with more
- 10:35Speaker 3: Money Making Conversations Masterclass. Welcome back to the Money Making
- 10:44Speaker 3: Conversations Masterclass, hosted by Rashaan McDonald. Money Making Conversations Masterclass
- 10:50Speaker 3: continues online at Moneymakingconversations dot com and follow money Making
- 10:54Speaker 3: Conversations Masterclass on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Guys One time talk about making money versus managing money.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Despite the success, I made a lot of huge mistakes.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I already told you lines at the door. We were
- 11:09Speaker 1: raking it in. Guess what I forgot because I didn't
- 11:13Speaker 1: worry about accounting. I already told my ad men was
- 11:16Speaker 1: messed up. I didn't have a budget, didn't have a plan.
- 11:19Speaker 1: I ain't have none of that. Back then, I was worse.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Back then. I forgot to pay taxes.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Yeah, or I was not paying taxes like they asked
- 11:27Speaker 1: you to pay taxes because you have to pay taxes
- 11:30Speaker 1: on liquor. You have to pay taxes on the tickets
- 11:33Speaker 1: that people buy. The money you make isn't always yours.
- 11:37Speaker 1: It's now if you pay ten dollars your taxes on
- 11:40Speaker 1: some of that to somebody. I was just sending that
- 11:43Speaker 1: ten dollars that I was getting because I didn't have
- 11:45Speaker 1: a budget or understood business options.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I was doing everything wrong.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Now, entrepreneurs, listen up, because we know the fastest group
- 11:55Speaker 1: of entrepreneurs are women.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Who were the.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Fastest group and it's particularly black women who are launching
- 12:04Speaker 1: businesses smarter than I did. I'm telling you right now,
- 12:07Speaker 1: I was selling out my comedy club but couldn't pay myself.
- 12:11Speaker 1: I was basically working for free. Why Because I wasn't
- 12:14Speaker 1: organized and I didn't budget properly. Never never, never, never
- 12:19Speaker 1: knew to order supplies. Gimme never knew when order supplies again.
- 12:25Speaker 1: That's why I'm dropping that Amazon Business tip on you.
- 12:28Speaker 1: This is where Amazon Business can help you when you
- 12:31Speaker 1: are running a company.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Sometimes you don't have time.
- 12:33Speaker 1: To leave your office for items a center and employee
- 12:36Speaker 1: or a volunteer.
- 12:37Speaker 2: If you're a nonprofit.
- 12:39Speaker 1: A limited staff means you have limited time just as
- 12:42Speaker 1: you can limited time. A limited staff means you have
- 12:46Speaker 1: limited time, just as you can when shopping for home.

- 13:31Speaker 1: also benefit from Amazon's leading industry fulfillment and delivery, with
- 13:36Speaker 1: options for free one or two day shipping through Business Prime.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Here's the next one, another topic, The biggest mistake.
- 13:46Speaker 1: No budget, boy, sometimes going down memory lane.
- 13:52Speaker 2: It can be painful.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Just let you guys know that you can't open a
- 13:56Speaker 1: business and then try to set a budget. If you
- 13:59Speaker 1: do that, you're playing catch up. You'll wonder why all
- 14:03Speaker 1: these people around you are getting paid and you are struggling.
- 14:06Speaker 1: The reason most business owners fail is they never had
- 14:09Speaker 1: a plan to begin with. Another reason people fail they
- 14:13Speaker 1: don't have time for their business. I see business owners
- 14:17Speaker 1: who will open at ten am, but arrive at the
- 14:19Speaker 1: same time as their customer. Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me.
- 14:22Speaker 1: I got open up, okay. Can you wait here for
- 14:24Speaker 1: a few minutes until we get set up?
- 14:25Speaker 2: Can you wait here? Okay?
- 14:27Speaker 1: That's just an example of somebody who will not be
- 14:30Speaker 1: opened that loan. You've seen restaurants that run out of
- 14:33Speaker 1: menu items. I hate that can I get this shrimp.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Uh, you know, we just ran out of shrimp.
- 14:40Speaker 1: How do you run out of something that's supposed to
- 14:43Speaker 1: be on your menu. It's like going to McDonald's they
- 14:45Speaker 1: don't have fries, because that's why I go to McDonalds.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I got to have my fries. If I went to
- 14:50Speaker 1: McDonald's and they didn't have fries, you know how mad
- 14:53Speaker 1: I be. Because they are running a business, they will
- 14:57Speaker 1: have fries.
- 14:58Speaker 2: That's a failure of planning and consistency.
- 15:02Speaker 1: You got a plan for success if you plan on
- 15:05Speaker 1: making money, If you plan on having this on your menu,
- 15:08Speaker 1: then you should plan on somebody buying it. And you
- 15:10Speaker 1: should also plan on not running out when people ask
- 15:14Speaker 1: for it.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Because once you go to a new business and they don't.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Have some, then your credibility is shot that that person
- 15:21Speaker 1: will come back. Why would I come back and I
- 15:25Speaker 1: went there the first time you didn't have what I want?
- 15:28Speaker 1: Why would I trust you? That's why consistency is key.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Consistency is key. If you draw by a store at
- 15:38Speaker 2: night and the sign was off, you think they will close. Right.
- 15:42Speaker 1: If the sign was on some days but off on others,
- 15:46Speaker 1: you stop trusting them. That goes for your business. Inconsistency
- 15:51Speaker 1: kills trust, whether shopping for home or work. People value Amazon.
- 15:56Speaker 1: I know I do for its convenience, selection and value.
- 16:01Speaker 1: But businesses and organizations, from sole proprietorships to large enterprises, governments, schools,
- 16:09Speaker 1: and healthcare organizations have different needs than individual buyers. That's
- 16:14Speaker 1: why they created Amazon Business. Signing up is easy and
- 16:19Speaker 1: creating an account is free. Fr Ee, I'm not tired.
- 16:27Speaker 1: I'm just letting you guys know. I hope you listening.
- 16:31Speaker 1: I know everybody going.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Which how are you parting it up with Amazon Business?
- 16:34Speaker 2: What are you are you? Hey?
- 16:36Speaker 1: I'm just telling you how I am in a relationship
- 16:39Speaker 1: that's making my business today very, very successful. And I'm
- 16:44Speaker 1: asking you to look at the big side, look at
- 16:46Speaker 1: the relationships. You probably already shopping on Amazon as an individual,
- 16:53Speaker 1: move it over to your business consider it. The count
- 16:58Speaker 1: is to set up an account. Let me break it
- 17:02Speaker 1: down to you. We talked about a lot. Hiring the
- 17:05Speaker 1: wrong people is a mistake. We all can agree on that, now, right,
- 17:08Speaker 1: come on, now, we can all agree on that.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Right.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Hire family members can't be a mistake if they're not qualifying.
- 17:15Speaker 2: We're all agrilled on that. And let me throw this
- 17:17Speaker 2: in here, do not hire a family.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Member if you're not hiring them the wrong way you
- 17:23Speaker 1: would hire an employee that you didn't know. Ask for
- 17:27Speaker 1: their resume, ask them for a lot of job applications,
- 17:30Speaker 1: ask them becoming be interviewed. Ask the screen in the
- 17:33Speaker 1: the same way you would screening someone you did not know.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Do not lawyer your standards of hiring for somebody who
- 17:41Speaker 1: is a family member. If you're a restaurant, a comedy club,
- 17:47Speaker 1: a place of entertainment, parking spaces matter.
- 17:51Speaker 2: I didn't believe that. Open my comedy club.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Yeah, we had a line down the street. But guess
- 17:57Speaker 1: what they didn't have a line to park. There's a
- 18:01Speaker 1: park along the street. Oh my goodness, parking matters everybody.
- 18:07Speaker 2: I had to hire security.
- 18:09Speaker 1: So I had to hire additional security to walk up
- 18:12Speaker 1: and down the street, make sure everybody's window was bussed
- 18:15Speaker 1: broken in, no car was broken into.
- 18:17Speaker 2: It was man like again.
- 18:19Speaker 1: I wasn't paying myself because I was paying taxes, I
- 18:23Speaker 1: was paying I didn't have a budget. I was paying
- 18:25Speaker 1: for additional security. Whoa now, now, now that's the overshon
- 18:31Speaker 1: Come on, come on, let's go to monitors.
- 18:33Speaker 2: That's the overshon Now with.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Amazon Business, you pay the way you want. You can
- 18:38Speaker 1: choose some multiple payment methods and easily set up your
- 18:41Speaker 1: account to purchase efficiently. Amazon Business is your one stop
- 18:46Speaker 1: shop for instant volume savings with bulk purchasing. Shop products
- 18:50Speaker 1: for office, breakroom, janitorial supplies, whether you need two or
- 18:54Speaker 1: two thousand items, Amazon Business has your bulk supplies need covered,
- 19:00Speaker 1: track spend, monitor purchasing patterns, and use that information to
- 19:04Speaker 1: facilitate improved decision making too, such as Amazon Business Analytics.
- 19:11Speaker 1: If you want to be a successful business owner, here
- 19:13Speaker 1: are the key takeaways.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Ask yourself, do you have time for your business? Can
- 19:19Speaker 2: we get a checked? Do you have time? Yeip? Can
- 19:21Speaker 2: we check that off you say yes.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Don't hire inexperience employees just because they're cheap. Is it
- 19:28Speaker 1: anybody that you have on your staff that's unqualified but
- 19:31Speaker 1: you're hiring them because they fit your budget. You might
- 19:35Speaker 1: want to consider re evaluating that person, or at least
- 19:38Speaker 1: putting them on probation on a probation period so they
- 19:43Speaker 1: can get qualified. If they're not qualified, you may have
- 19:46Speaker 1: to let them go. Don't hire friends or family are
- 19:50Speaker 1: left they're fully qualified. I have said this since I started,
- 19:55Speaker 1: and I'm not getting off of that. You know why,
- 19:57Speaker 1: because I did it. I hire family members. That is
- 20:01Speaker 1: like the curse of Rashan McDonald. I love my family members,
- 20:05Speaker 1: but boy, they were not qualified.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Friends I've known for twenty years.
- 20:10Speaker 1: They were qualified, but they would not qualify what I
- 20:14Speaker 1: needed them to do for the company that I opened.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Key right there.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Just because you go to happy hour to people, just
- 20:21Speaker 1: because you go to lunch with these people, just because
- 20:23Speaker 1: they come by and barbecue in your backyard with you,
- 20:27Speaker 1: Just because they come by and barbecue in the backyard
- 20:29Speaker 1: with you, don't mean that's the person you uhould be
- 20:32Speaker 1: putting on salary. Plan for parking, that's so key. Where
- 20:39Speaker 1: you buying a Lisa, count your spaces just because that
- 20:46Speaker 1: building fits. Ooh, I love this building, it's perfect, But
- 20:49Speaker 1: where your customers are going to park? Also, look at
- 20:52Speaker 1: your other competition is the parking I clean in the daytime,
- 20:58Speaker 1: but at night all those space that you saw open
- 21:01Speaker 1: or gone. So make sure you evaluate your parking correctly.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Set a budget before you launch, and don't play catch up.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Let me tell you something. If you can't set a
- 21:13Speaker 2: budget while you.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Open your business, because how you gonna qualify, how you're
- 21:18Speaker 1: gonna make money, how much money you need to make
- 21:20Speaker 1: if you don't have a budget. I've learned these lessons
- 21:23Speaker 1: the hard way and I want to help you avoid
- 21:26Speaker 1: the same mistakes I made. But if you want to
