- 2:15Speaker 1: you my next guest. Entertainment career has encompassed singing, stage, television, film.
- 2:22Speaker 1: You've seen her acting acting work on about TVs, Saints
- 2:26Speaker 1: and Centers, U m c's A House Divided, Tyler Perry's
- 2:30Speaker 1: House of Pain. Now she's also starring in an exciting
- 2:34Speaker 1: new free farm TV series called Motherland Fort Salem, which
- 2:38Speaker 1: premiers March eighteenth. Please welcome the Money Conversations Dmetria McKinny. Hello, Hello, cool,
- 2:45Speaker 1: the first time on my show. Thank you for taking
- 2:46Speaker 1: the time, Thank you for having me. So where are
- 2:49Speaker 1: you based at? I'm here in Atlanta. I'm from the A. Okay,
- 2:52Speaker 1: you're from not from the A, but I consider myself
- 2:54Speaker 1: a Georgia peach. I've been here for about sixteen seventeen years,
- 2:57Speaker 1: so really, you know, we always hear about the move
- 2:59Speaker 1: to Atlanta. The opportunities are here, you know, l A.
- 3:02Speaker 1: You know I moved. I lived in l A fifteen years.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I lived in New York. My past history as a
- 3:07Speaker 1: stand up comic, this is I'm acting. But basically my
- 3:10Speaker 1: career has been tied to management and production and producing
- 3:14Speaker 1: shows and films, which is what we don't have done
- 3:17Speaker 1: it all over the country, living in Chicago, lived in
- 3:19Speaker 1: of course Los Angele, New York. I'm originally from Houston.
- 3:22Speaker 1: So when I hear you talk about Atlanta's home, you're
- 3:26Speaker 1: actually living in what people want to get out of
- 3:28Speaker 1: Atlanta from a from an entertainment standpoint, you're acting, You're
- 3:32Speaker 1: in acting, a working actress in Atlanta. How did you
- 3:36Speaker 1: pull that off? You know? I think sometimes you know,
- 3:39Speaker 1: they say ignorance is bliss. I don't think I knew better.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Um I was. I got my start with acting with
- 3:45Speaker 1: Mr Tyler Perry, but of course with the stage place.
- 3:47Speaker 1: My very first thing, my semi big thing would have
- 3:50Speaker 1: been Meet the Browns, and we toured that for a
- 3:52Speaker 1: year and after that I was like, Okay, I'm in
- 3:54Speaker 1: Fort Walton Beach. There's definitely not the kind of opportunities
- 3:57Speaker 1: that I want here. And Florida comedy in for waa, yeah,
- 4:01Speaker 1: you know, military life and that's about it. Um So
- 4:05Speaker 1: I made the move here without the real knowledge of
- 4:07Speaker 1: what it could be with the television industry. I knew
- 4:10Speaker 1: about the music part of it, which was definitely a
- 4:12Speaker 1: big draw for me as well as a singer. But
- 4:14Speaker 1: when I got here, it was just really really cool
- 4:17Speaker 1: to see the way that I was here at the
- 4:18Speaker 1: beginning of the architecture that was coming of the industry
- 4:21Speaker 1: here in Atlanta. And it feels that way. It feels
- 4:23Speaker 1: very much to talk about that legacy of time frame
- 4:26Speaker 1: that you were coming. Now, you mentioned we mentioned singing,
- 4:29Speaker 1: So what is that play? Because I looked at your
- 4:31Speaker 1: resume it was talking about tours like with my boy
- 4:34Speaker 1: to Rees Tank, talk about that journey because now we
- 4:37Speaker 1: just focused on acting right now? Right? Yeah, well no,
- 4:40Speaker 1: not necessarily. Um that that part of the journey was
- 4:43Speaker 1: really really cool because that was the original drum. The
- 4:46Speaker 1: beautiful thing about a dream is that it grows and
- 4:49Speaker 1: it expands and sometimes it's up, sometimes it's down, but
- 4:51Speaker 1: it can also be very parallel. Um. So music has
- 4:55Speaker 1: always been always, always, always, from the very first time
- 4:57Speaker 1: I heard Miss Whitney Houston, always been my dream. Um.
- 5:00Speaker 1: And getting to perform with people like Tyree's Tank Vantage,
- 5:04Speaker 1: Hey girl, Vantage, I love you, you know, getting to
- 5:06Speaker 1: do all of that type of stuff. Charles Wilson, Oh
- 5:09Speaker 1: my gosh, I love her, you know, getting to to
- 5:12Speaker 1: tour with those types of people, I got an opportunity
- 5:13Speaker 1: to learn a lot, not just about the music, but
- 5:16Speaker 1: also the entertainment of it, and the give and take
- 5:18Speaker 1: between the audience and they aren't and most definitely the business.
- 5:23Speaker 1: You have to remember that even if this is your dream,
- 5:26Speaker 1: there is a business very much attached to it, and
- 5:28Speaker 1: I think that's what people forget. Okay, Walden Beach, Okay,
- 5:32Speaker 1: the singing pull you out of there? Are acting pulled
- 5:34Speaker 1: you out of Fort wall The desire to sing but
- 5:38Speaker 1: starting to act fulled me pulled me out of Fort WALLA.
- 5:41Speaker 1: What did this this? This is a natural skill or
- 5:43Speaker 1: you went to your training to see that you could
- 5:46Speaker 1: be an excellent actress because your resume tells me that
- 5:49Speaker 1: you're in demand. I've never gone to a class acting.
- 5:53Speaker 1: I've always wanted to, always wanted to know, you know,
- 5:57Speaker 1: And like you said, everybody's path is a little bit different.
- 6:00Speaker 1: What I recommend it for people, absolutely not. I definitely
- 6:03Speaker 1: want to train, I definitely want to get into some classes.
- 6:06Speaker 1: But what I've taken the opportunity to do since I've
- 6:08Speaker 1: been a working actress for so long, to make sure
- 6:10Speaker 1: that I learned something with each and every character, each
- 6:13Speaker 1: and every director from my co stars. I asked the questions.
- 6:15Speaker 1: It may seem trivial. I'm like, so why why why Blue?
- 6:20Speaker 1: You know, I'm trying to learn what's happening behind the camera.
- 6:24Speaker 1: I'm trying to learn the financial part of it. I
- 6:26Speaker 1: really want to make sure that I'm learning each step
- 6:27Speaker 1: of the way because I wasn't necessarily brought up in
- 6:30Speaker 1: the technical training of it. I'm still just staring at you. Said, look,
- 6:34Speaker 1: ra Sean, I'm looking at your resume. I just rattled
- 6:37Speaker 1: off bounds, sts, moles, Stev, Saints and Sinator's. You sees
- 6:42Speaker 1: a house divided. That's the house Divide is in Vancouver's
- 6:45Speaker 1: that one's in l A, l A. That's that's shot
- 6:47Speaker 1: in l A. And then you have a motherland ashore Vancouver, Vancouver,
- 6:52Speaker 1: and House of Pain is shot here right here, and
- 6:54Speaker 1: Saints and Sinators is shot here. And you're telling me,
- 6:57Speaker 1: Rashan um acting classes. Uh not yet. That's the you know,
- 7:07Speaker 1: you know you can you can be doing something. And
- 7:08Speaker 1: I think sometimes you come up with a gift like
- 7:10Speaker 1: you seem to have a gift that you just knew
- 7:12Speaker 1: you could motivate people. You understood the financial part of it.
- 7:15Speaker 1: You also had this funny bone like you're well rounded
- 7:17Speaker 1: and all of your gifts, but understanding how to utilize
- 7:21Speaker 1: them to the best of their abilities. Where the training
- 7:23Speaker 1: comes in and that's what I want to learn how
- 7:25Speaker 1: to do. Listen, because we are allowed to talk about
- 7:27Speaker 1: I want to get to Motherland because the trailer and
- 7:31Speaker 1: you know, I'm a I'm gonna tell you something. I'm
- 7:33Speaker 1: a I'm a superhero. I'm a Marvel fan. You're all
- 7:35Speaker 1: into fantasy girl. Come on that Captain Marvel. That's my girl,
- 7:39Speaker 1: you know. You know, I just love that. You know,
- 7:42Speaker 1: Aquaman was amazing, you know, and I love female leads.
- 7:46Speaker 1: You know, Wonder Woman. I thought it was amazing. It's
- 7:50Speaker 1: one of those movies where you know, I'm I'm a TV.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I'm a guy who surfers, surf surfs a TV and
- 7:55Speaker 1: if I Wonder Woman, I'm gonna stop. I've seen this
- 7:57Speaker 1: how many times I've seen this thing goes to going
- 8:00Speaker 1: to see it and safe they were Aquaman, Aquaman and
- 8:02Speaker 1: so so so I'm excited when I saw the trailer
- 8:05Speaker 1: because it plays into my fantasy. Oh. You know, strong women,
- 8:10Speaker 1: women who are empowered but also who are vulnerable, and
- 8:15Speaker 1: that's tied to the mysteries of their power and the
- 8:18Speaker 1: journey of becoming responsible, a responsible individual with those powers.
- 8:23Speaker 1: So tell us first how you got involved with this opportunity.
- 8:26Speaker 1: When the script came across my desk for me to audition,
- 8:29Speaker 1: I still audition. I've been working for a really long time.
- 8:31Speaker 1: But I am not above that. That's part of this business.
- 8:34Speaker 1: So anybody who says, you know, you know, I don't
- 8:36Speaker 1: get it. But it came across and I was like,
- 8:38Speaker 1: you know, this is necessary. This is now. I had
- 8:42Speaker 1: never seen anything involving witchcraft, or or the army or
- 8:47Speaker 1: women this way set in an alternate universe and alternate dimension,
- 8:53Speaker 1: maybe where women are literally the world's army. We are
- 8:57Speaker 1: the driving force behind peace, We are the driving force
- 8:59Speaker 1: behind safe deep men play a much larger role in
- 9:02Speaker 1: the parenting of the children. And um, we have it's
- 9:06Speaker 1: it's it's literally all the quote unquote jobs are flipped, right.
- 9:12Speaker 1: But I love that you mentioned the vulnerability, because the
- 9:15Speaker 1: power that is in these which is these women, these armies,
- 9:18Speaker 1: is the fact that they are vulnerable. They are sensual,
- 9:21Speaker 1: they are um scared, you know, all of those things
- 9:24Speaker 1: that are taken to be weaknesses for women are toned
- 9:27Speaker 1: into a strength and it's a beautiful thing to see.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Now this show we're talking about Motherland's Motherland for Salem.
- 9:34Speaker 1: That's gonna be premier now Wednesday, March eighteenth on free
- 9:36Speaker 1: Form nine pm A Standard time, a pm Central Time
- 9:41Speaker 1: Standard time. Now, when I was watching the trailer, I
- 9:43Speaker 1: got the feeling that you had. It was it was
- 9:46Speaker 1: a lot of physical Oh god, yes, okay, So so
- 9:49Speaker 1: you're you're tall, okay, and running under the wires and
- 9:53Speaker 1: a lot of brown and crawling and things like that.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Talk about that aspect. You know, have you done anything
- 9:59Speaker 1: that physical and or acting career? I have never been
- 10:02Speaker 1: blessed with the opportunity to be so straight and battered
- 10:07Speaker 1: for money. Um, it was. It was a really cool thing.
- 10:10Speaker 1: That's the other thing that drew me to it, you know.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I twenty nine Team was about trying different roles, things
- 10:15Speaker 1: that people hadn't seen me in. Um in a house divided,
- 10:18Speaker 1: I play a villain. I'm always the good girl. I'm
- 10:21Speaker 1: always cheated on. You know, I always have a redemptive
- 10:23Speaker 1: quality and this is just such a total departure from that.
- 10:26Speaker 1: You know, those those those qualities of the character. Yes,
- 10:31Speaker 1: Charis is a fool, but with within a cost in
- 10:34Speaker 1: Motherland for Salem, getting in there and having to really
- 10:37Speaker 1: dig deep and find those places when I didn't think
- 10:40Speaker 1: I had the strength, when I didn't think I had
- 10:41Speaker 1: the power um and still figuring out how to be
- 10:44Speaker 1: compassionate while being a drill sergeant of sorts. You know,
- 10:48Speaker 1: I'm like a female Wesley's Nights in that thing. It's
- 10:51Speaker 1: really really dope. It's really cool because because you know,
- 10:54Speaker 1: I saw like three and they sent me the official trailer,
- 10:56Speaker 1: sound like two or three more trailers, because I got
- 10:59Speaker 1: excited when I saw that trailer right as other trailers
- 11:01Speaker 1: go back and so talk about the history a little
- 11:04Speaker 1: bit more. The one that they put out officially just
- 11:06Speaker 1: talks about the immediate you know, the media. You guys
- 11:09Speaker 1: been training, you guys have these powers failing and that's
- 11:12Speaker 1: why I saw the vulnerability. But it's all some good
- 11:14Speaker 1: trailers out there that show well, how you guys were creative,
- 11:18Speaker 1: your your your past, this that made this opportunity in
- 11:22Speaker 1: the future. And so so what is exactly is your
- 11:25Speaker 1: Are you a lead or you are from a standpoint
- 11:27Speaker 1: of one of the people, one of the drill sergeants
- 11:30Speaker 1: in there because it's a military format. You're training as
- 11:33Speaker 1: soldiers to protect the world. But you have these special powers.
- 11:37Speaker 1: What is your power? I am drill sergeant, an acost
- 11:39Speaker 1: your quartermain, and I am the main person that teaches
- 11:43Speaker 1: all of the new recruits. All of the young ladies
- 11:44Speaker 1: who are involved in the draft have to come through
- 11:47Speaker 1: me at some point to make sure that they are
- 11:49Speaker 1: ready for life, death, and more, period, point blanket. In
- 11:52Speaker 1: the midst of that, they're learning how to harness if
- 11:54Speaker 1: they even know what their powers are, their specific power,
- 11:57Speaker 1: while understanding how to do all of these other things
- 12:00Speaker 1: that will help them in the warcraft. So I do everything,
- 12:05Speaker 1: but you're still and tell me your power. There are seers,
- 12:08Speaker 1: there are nowhere's, there are healers. Anacostia does everything. That's
- 12:13Speaker 1: why I have to be a drill sergeant. I have
- 12:14Speaker 1: to be able to help them learn how to tap
- 12:16Speaker 1: into that in your life. Oh absolutely, I'm everyone ant
- 12:23Speaker 1: is not laying about that gonna breakout, so no good will.
- 12:26Speaker 1: I can't compete. I barely hating what you're talking now.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I'm telling to these talent of the people coming on
- 12:31Speaker 1: my show just gonna bust out. On a note. You know,
- 12:33Speaker 1: I'm going like, I put the handphone, but she actually singing,
- 12:36Speaker 1: I can't play that. That wasn't bad. That was bad.
- 12:41Speaker 1: That was bad. Don't you do me like that? Now?
- 12:44Speaker 1: This this when you when you see a show like
- 12:46Speaker 1: this and you see how Marvel in d C, I
- 12:50Speaker 1: s DC as well has slip the script on women
- 12:53Speaker 1: empowering women, do you feel good about it? Is just
- 12:58Speaker 1: the right time to present without question, without question. And
- 13:03Speaker 1: you know you mentioned Marvel and you and you mentioned
- 13:06Speaker 1: UM d C. But you know it's free form. Is
- 13:09Speaker 1: part of the umbrella that is Disney. Yes, but Disney
- 13:12Speaker 1: has also brought us Mulan like there. There's been a
- 13:14Speaker 1: lot of this that's kind of been there. But I
- 13:17Speaker 1: think that the timing is so necessary because of the
- 13:19Speaker 1: temperature that's going on in our in our culture, in
- 13:22Speaker 1: our sit in our country, you know, where we have
- 13:26Speaker 1: to band together and we have to show the strength
- 13:28Speaker 1: everybody's been talking about, you know, equality and women's rights
- 13:31Speaker 1: and it up, but this is really really harnessing it.
- 13:34Speaker 1: And our right is to be vulnerable while we're strong.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Our right is to be pure while we're sensual, all right,
- 13:41Speaker 1: And we have so many different rights. And the thing is,
- 13:43Speaker 1: while we're showing all of these strengths of womanhood and
- 13:46Speaker 1: hear me, roar and all of that other stuff, we're
- 13:48Speaker 1: also bringing the men in and we're showing their strength
- 13:51Speaker 1: in a different way. It's really really quite beautiful the
- 13:53Speaker 1: way that Elliott Lawrence, the creator of this show What's
- 13:56Speaker 1: Up man Um has has kind of orchestrated this thing
- 14:00Speaker 1: like he's just did the House of Pain. So naturally
- 14:05Speaker 1: you are you do have comedy comedy chops. Okay, we're
- 14:08Speaker 1: gonna go on our next week. I want to bring
- 14:10Speaker 1: up there the return of the House of Pain, and
- 14:12Speaker 1: I want to talk about more about the Saints and
- 14:14Speaker 1: Centers and House Divided because and also we're gonna recap
- 14:18Speaker 1: more about the Motherland, which is the show's premier and
- 14:20Speaker 1: Wednesday March. But the thing, I just want to commend
- 14:23Speaker 1: you on your your articulate from from from the standpoint
- 14:26Speaker 1: of from a from a motivational speaker standpoint. Do you
- 14:29Speaker 1: do many speeching speaking engagements. I love to talk to
- 14:32Speaker 1: young ladies, especially on African American ladies, to let them
- 14:35Speaker 1: know the power they possessed, Like I absolutely like and
- 14:38Speaker 1: you can do it you gotta, you gotta, you got,
- 14:40Speaker 1: you got a natural skill and uh I had Roxane
- 14:43Speaker 1: Chante on the show and uh, just amazing. You know
- 14:46Speaker 1: how you always I'm always I always admire individuals who
- 14:50Speaker 1: you know, just connect connect the sentence after the sentis
- 14:53Speaker 1: after centers and it's just a thought of being able
- 14:55Speaker 1: to so natural and you have that gift. Good. We're
- 14:58Speaker 1: hearing with Dmitria McKinnie. She is what was? Can you
- 15:01Speaker 1: hit that note again for me? Every whatever. We'll be

- 16:20Speaker 1: Ra Sean McDonald. I'm with the talented Dmitru McKinney. Um,
- 16:24Speaker 1: just a singer stage television, and I love when we
- 16:27Speaker 1: started talking about hassle pain. You said Mr Perry, Why
- 16:32Speaker 1: why did you not say just Tyler Perry? Why did
- 16:34Speaker 1: you say Mr Perry? It's just just the relationship, the
- 16:38Speaker 1: reverence of the mentoring. It's a combination of things, the mentoring,
- 16:43Speaker 1: the respect um, the realization that he has earned a
- 16:47Speaker 1: lot of respect and sometimes he doesn't always get it.
- 16:50Speaker 1: So every chance I get to say thank you, even
- 16:52Speaker 1: if it is with just a Mr Perry or if

- 19:01Speaker 1: so you're back home. I noticed the cast is pretty
- 19:05Speaker 1: much back to lance. Gross my girl, I know, Cassie
- 19:08Speaker 1: Davis way back in the day. She's crazy in the
- 19:11Speaker 1: kind of way. Yeah, you absolutely can sing too. She
- 19:14Speaker 1: can sing to uh, Levan Davis, Alan Paine's back, who
- 19:19Speaker 1: am I missing, China McClain, d Shaw, Everybody's back, the Twins,
- 19:22Speaker 1: Hayden and Jade in their back like he brought in
- 19:25Speaker 1: a puppy, everybody and the shot in his new studios. Right. Yeah,
- 19:30Speaker 1: So when you got the call, you already got are
- 19:32Speaker 1: three shows happening out there, number four, that's a blessing.
- 19:36Speaker 1: I'm not teaching that way because of the fact that
- 19:39Speaker 1: I always talk about multiple streams of income on this show,
- 19:42Speaker 1: and it means being able. To me, you've been able
- 19:45Speaker 1: to you're doing it and right in front of us,
- 19:46Speaker 1: in front of as far as an acting capacity, but
- 19:49Speaker 1: on a television format, which is even more difficult. You
- 19:51Speaker 1: can get away with in the film, but to do
- 19:54Speaker 1: what you're doing in a television format, it's really slick.
- 19:58Speaker 1: It's been, it's been different. It's been you know, And
- 20:00Speaker 1: you say, be careful what you asked where you might
- 20:02Speaker 1: get it. I'm so grateful to ask. So with that
- 20:05Speaker 1: being said, you know, because I've had talented actresses and
- 20:07Speaker 1: actors on the show like that. How do you how
- 20:10Speaker 1: do you go through the process of prepping for these scripts?
- 20:13Speaker 1: Because they all each one of those shows are different,
- 20:15Speaker 1: very different. So you have a sitcom, you have an
- 20:17Speaker 1: action adventure in Motherland sitcoms Tyler Perry Show, and then
- 20:21Speaker 1: Satan Sentators that's like over the top drama, you know,
- 20:25Speaker 1: and then a House Divided you play a villain, a
- 20:27Speaker 1: a niving character. You know. So those are four different Okay,
- 20:33Speaker 1: who am I talking to now? You know? Like I said,
- 20:38Speaker 1: I you know, I think that. I think that because
- 20:43Speaker 1: I've always grown up kind of watching people. I'm gonna
- 20:45Speaker 1: people watch the Observer forever and I take no parents,
- 20:49Speaker 1: not on your got like nine people rushing to the
- 20:54Speaker 1: front um. But I've always kind of kept these stories
- 20:58Speaker 1: in the back of the head because I'm like, I
- 20:59Speaker 1: might be able to play that person later. You know,
- 21:01Speaker 1: I'm sitting at the restaurant and people thinking, Oh, she's
- 21:02Speaker 1: looking at my food. Nope, why are you're eating it?
- 21:05Speaker 1: You just broke up. He's with this person. Oh my gosh,
- 21:08Speaker 1: it's a scandal. It work. You know, Like I'm thinking
- 21:10Speaker 1: of those things. So when I get an opportunity to
- 21:13Speaker 1: play each of these different people, I kind of already
- 21:15Speaker 1: know them, and then I'm building off of the foundation
- 21:18Speaker 1: of what I think they might represent in somebody else
- 21:20Speaker 1: that I've met. Okay, so these are all television opportunities.
- 21:24Speaker 1: I'm talking about talking about film. Where are we at
- 21:27Speaker 1: with that? I want to do that, um a lot more.
- 21:30Speaker 1: I've done a little bit of the big screen. But
- 21:32Speaker 1: I'm having so much fun with the longevity that comes
- 21:35Speaker 1: with television series. Like, you know, money management and people
- 21:39Speaker 1: don't know that wealth building and all of that stuff.
- 21:41Speaker 1: People don't understand when you're an actor and you're not working. Yes,
- 21:44Speaker 1: you get residuals, but they start to do in the
- 21:46Speaker 1: left and when you're out of a job, you're out
- 21:50Speaker 1: of a job. You ain't making money. So, you know,
- 21:53Speaker 1: I like the longevity that comes with television shows, especially
- 21:56Speaker 1: with the blessings that I've had, you know, Saints and Sinners.
- 21:58Speaker 1: If we come back in season five, House Divided, we
- 22:00Speaker 1: knocked out two seasons in one year. Motherland we were
- 22:03Speaker 1: filming for six months in Vancouver, um, and then how
- 22:06Speaker 1: the House of Pain like that just I don't even
- 22:08Speaker 1: need to say nothing about that one, you know, So
- 22:10Speaker 1: being able to really have that longevity. I am a
- 22:12Speaker 1: single mother and knowing where my next dime is coming
- 22:15Speaker 1: from has been very, very important. But hallelujah, he's grown now,
- 22:19Speaker 1: so I'm ready to spread my wings. Jesus, no good word?
- 22:24Speaker 1: You know? Can you cook? Or what are your balance?
- 22:26Speaker 1: See now? Why you got to custom me on? I
- 22:28Speaker 1: got to because I gotta find a flaw. Okay, you've
- 22:32Speaker 1: not different characters and you can sing and you're tall,
- 22:35Speaker 1: so cooking you can't cook? No, I can make a
- 22:37Speaker 1: mean reservation. Whatever you want to go and problem. No
- 22:43Speaker 1: my son cook okay. And you you're not acting on
- 22:46Speaker 1: this no skill, no, okay, it ain't what you want.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Burn stuff yourself you want that, So that's not part
- 22:55Speaker 1: of the balance life. Now, I mean I can. I
- 22:57Speaker 1: just don't like to. Don't okay, So make a mean reservation,
- 23:01Speaker 1: mean reservation. I'll clean up, okay. Just we're just we're
- 23:04Speaker 1: just walking out the balanced life portion. How about working out?
- 23:07Speaker 1: Do you work out? I love to work out, okay,
- 23:09Speaker 1: your stretcher, hot yoga or pilates, hot yoga, pilates, zoomba,
- 23:14Speaker 1: I'll do weights like I like variety, okay, cool, So
- 23:17Speaker 1: that keeps you that kind of prepped you for Motherland Salem. Okay,
- 23:22Speaker 1: was there a training period for you in that series?
- 23:24Speaker 1: We were there a month early in training, and we're
- 23:27Speaker 1: using different kinds of weapons, you know, and and a
- 23:29Speaker 1: lot of the which things of old you know, you
- 23:30Speaker 1: saw Pippity Poppity book. They gotta stick. They got a
- 23:32Speaker 1: book they gotta you know, we're doing different things. The
- 23:36Speaker 1: weapons are different Pippity Puppity book, you know, like Cinderella,
- 23:42Speaker 1: Barry Poppins and stuff. You know your character, you know,
- 23:47Speaker 1: so we're doing a lot of different stuff. But even
- 23:49Speaker 1: with that came a whole lot of physical training for
- 23:51Speaker 1: about a month before we even got started filming. In
- 23:54Speaker 1: that process, you know, did it anything that they did it?
- 23:57Speaker 1: You know, like did you ever hear the wall? Like? Wow,
- 23:59Speaker 1: I didn't expect going to be this much physical training.
- 24:02Speaker 1: I don't think I hit a wall. I think I
- 24:04Speaker 1: woke up a couple of times with my left eye
- 24:06Speaker 1: very like shifted over there um. And there were parts
- 24:09Speaker 1: of me that hurt that. I mean, I've been and
- 24:12Speaker 1: I was a basketball player, I ran track, you know,
- 24:15Speaker 1: I was always been very physical. But the physicality that
- 24:19Speaker 1: came with this, and not only that, the mental stretch
- 24:22Speaker 1: that I had to do because I'm completely outside of
- 24:24Speaker 1: my my comfort zone and I'm doing this with five
- 24:27Speaker 1: other ladies, right, so we all had to be on
- 24:30Speaker 1: one of course. Oh yeah, we're in. It's still a
- 24:33Speaker 1: military thing, so there's still drills and there's still ordered
- 24:37Speaker 1: to this. Okay, cool, So let's we were We know
- 24:40Speaker 1: that's coming out of March A Teams as they released.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Date been set for Tyler Perry's not yet. Not yet,
- 24:47Speaker 1: there's still I'm pretty sure it's going to be. They're
- 24:50Speaker 1: still in production. I've already I can get you back
- 24:52Speaker 1: for that. Oh yeah, let's go cool. Now, let's talk
- 24:56Speaker 1: about we we we've mentioned the name of these other
- 24:59Speaker 1: two other series. Give us more detail about your character
- 25:01Speaker 1: on that Saintan Centers, which is own Pounds TV sts
- 25:04Speaker 1: the Centers, I play Miss Tamara Austin. She is no
- 25:06Speaker 1: longer Callagwae because she didn't divorce myles. Y'all better keep up.
- 25:12Speaker 1: And it comes on Sundays, right, It comes on I
- 25:14Speaker 1: believe Sundays because it's really highly rated. It's one of
- 25:18Speaker 1: the it's one of the highest rated shows they've got.
- 25:22Speaker 1: But it's it's really cool because she in the world
- 25:24Speaker 1: of centers, she is kind of the lamb, but she's
- 25:26Speaker 1: starting to come out of that a little bit. You know,
- 25:29Speaker 1: if you get bit enough, you start to bite back
- 25:32Speaker 1: because you know you're at the mercy of writers. But
- 25:34Speaker 1: they're very smart. I've been blessed to work with some really,
- 25:37Speaker 1: really smart writers. They don't allow us to be one
- 25:40Speaker 1: dimensional in any stretch of the imagine because you know,
- 25:42Speaker 1: on this series is very popular, you know, and it's
- 25:45Speaker 1: from our It's kind of like, you know, we always
- 25:48Speaker 1: asked for, you know, because I'm talking about I'm going
- 25:50Speaker 1: to daytime soap proper, you know, and it has that
- 25:52Speaker 1: feel strong nighttime so proper with everybody connecting the doctor
- 25:57Speaker 1: really cool and you're being a part of that. Now,
- 26:00Speaker 1: what comes with that? In social media recognition? How how
- 26:04Speaker 1: do you how do you deal with that when people
- 26:06Speaker 1: are recognizing you in public? How do you post? Are you?
- 26:09Speaker 1: Are you very savvy as what you post on your
- 26:11Speaker 1: social media? Talk about that. I recognize that social media
- 26:15Speaker 1: is a window and I can make that window dirty
- 26:19Speaker 1: or I can make it clean. So I want them
- 26:21Speaker 1: to get the best impression of who I am. I
- 26:22Speaker 1: try to make sure that I talk about my natural hair.
- 26:24Speaker 1: I'm trying to include things about my son. I love
- 26:26Speaker 1: you boy, um, you know. And then I try to
- 26:29Speaker 1: make sure that people understand the different work that I
- 26:31Speaker 1: have going on. But I don't want to give away
- 26:33Speaker 1: any teasers. And I also understand the responsibility that comes
- 26:36Speaker 1: with the kind of platform that I have, right so
- 26:38Speaker 1: when it comes to posting, I'm very, very particular, but
- 26:42Speaker 1: fun with ok let's talk about something that you popped
- 26:44Speaker 1: up because it's real big natural hair. Yeah, I mean, okay,
- 26:48Speaker 1: what is it? What are the it's I'm assuming naturally curly? Yes, okay.
- 26:53Speaker 1: And so are you tied to any brands? Are you
- 26:56Speaker 1: looking for any brands to tire your your look to
- 26:59Speaker 1: or you just hey, this is my style. I'm gonna promoted.
- 27:02Speaker 1: I feel I'm blessed to have this skill set. Like
- 27:04Speaker 1: my Isacut the producer. She's big into her natural you know,
- 27:07Speaker 1: and always touching it and everything. Here, I'm touching my
- 27:11Speaker 1: ball and you know, that's what I got to work.
- 27:14Speaker 1: I got it. I had it back in the day
- 27:18Speaker 1: from two girls. Did you know me back then? You
- 27:21Speaker 1: wouldn't that was too much trouble and so he k
- 27:28Speaker 1: don't be acting on. So the whole natural look that
- 27:32Speaker 1: you why is it so big nowadays? I think it's
- 27:35Speaker 1: just it for me and I can only speak on
- 27:37Speaker 1: my behalf. It was about really embracing everything of me.
- 27:41Speaker 1: You know, I didn't know what my natural hair texture was.
- 27:44Speaker 1: I didn't understand it, and once I got it, I
- 27:46Speaker 1: don't know what to do with it. We was gonna
- 27:48Speaker 1: fight forever um and I've just gotten to a point
- 27:51Speaker 1: where now I recognized that, just like any other relationship,
- 27:54Speaker 1: it's strengthened the relationship and the time that I take
- 27:56Speaker 1: for myself. You know, a lot of naturals, I know
- 27:59Speaker 1: you don't want to get up that wash day is
- 28:00Speaker 1: a full moisturizing and ceiling can be a funky mess.
- 28:04Speaker 1: You don't know which products to use, But use that
- 28:06Speaker 1: time to just spend with yourself, like, let that be
- 28:09Speaker 1: your youth time. Especially the single moms, the working moms
- 28:11Speaker 1: that were just women in general. A lot of times
- 28:13Speaker 1: we don't take time for ourselves, and with this, this
- 28:16Speaker 1: was my time to get to know me. Okay, cool,
- 28:17Speaker 1: Let's let's deal with stereotypes. Okay, cool, Like complexion, generally
- 28:22Speaker 1: your hair is straightened, Yeah, okay, cool, did you have
- 28:24Speaker 1: to deal with that. Oh yeah, I was very afraid,
- 28:26Speaker 1: especially with my industry. I didn't know how the jobs
- 28:28Speaker 1: were going to come once I started to rock my fro.
- 28:31Speaker 1: But now everybody wants me to keep it, like free form.
- 28:34Speaker 1: I love them. I love them. They are so so
- 28:37Speaker 1: so continued. They are adamant about making sure that they
- 28:40Speaker 1: include diversity and just inclusion general. And when I walked
- 28:44Speaker 1: in with my fro for my audition, they were like,
- 28:46Speaker 1: Annacostia has a fro. We would love for you to
- 28:49Speaker 1: keep your fro. And I absolutely adored that. So yeah,
- 28:53Speaker 1: I didn't. I'm sure it was exciting to hear based
- 28:56Speaker 1: on the type of acting you have to do in
- 28:58Speaker 1: that military form, and if you would have to straighten
- 29:01Speaker 1: your hair would probably been a big problem. Man. I
- 29:04Speaker 1: always wondered what I do if I had a g
- 29:05Speaker 1: Jane moment where they were like, you know, can you
- 29:07Speaker 1: shave your head? Let's go pray you wouldn't do it.
- 29:12Speaker 1: I don't. Let's checks out there. It depends on the checks.
- 29:15Speaker 1: There's checks, and you know, I'm sure you know zero's
- 29:18Speaker 1: equal bald heads. That's right. I'm glad you understand that.
- 29:20Speaker 1: You see my head ball tied to this baldness. Okay,
- 29:24Speaker 1: and just let you know that your ball got balled
- 29:26Speaker 1: for a reason. Okay. Used to have a barber come
- 29:29Speaker 1: by my house one day. I said, I'm gonna go
- 29:33Speaker 1: zero you out. Now that one series we have not
- 29:37Speaker 1: talked about it is the U M C. SID Talk
- 29:41Speaker 1: about that. How did you get started? And what season
- 29:44Speaker 1: is it? We've done two seasons already. I played Carrissa. Carrissa, Carrissa,
- 29:49Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. She comes from the wrong side of
- 29:51Speaker 1: the tracks, but she's always she was ray her parents,
- 29:58Speaker 1: her dad was had a a bit. She's been with
- 30:01Speaker 1: the Steelers, she's been with the Robbers, she's been she
- 30:05Speaker 1: was raised in that life. And she's connected with this
- 30:07Speaker 1: wealthy man and somehow gotten his wife out of the way,
- 30:11Speaker 1: and now she had moved herself right on in and
- 30:13Speaker 1: she's freaking havoc every which way she goes. It's really
- 30:16Speaker 1: really um a fun departure from anything I've ever done.
- 30:20Speaker 1: And I get to explore some facets that you know,
- 30:23Speaker 1: it's funny you step into these shoes, but you also
- 30:25Speaker 1: have to step into this mindset and when you get
- 30:27Speaker 1: to kind of feel the inner workings of somebody you know,
- 30:30Speaker 1: kind of maniacal, but saying at the same time it's
- 30:33Speaker 1: different kind of feeling. She's fun. Well, all your characters
- 30:37Speaker 1: are fine. The thing that my biggest takeaway from you
- 30:41Speaker 1: here enjoying your life, the opportunity that are being presented
- 30:44Speaker 1: to you, and you're taking advantage of it. It doesn't
- 30:47Speaker 1: feel you know, we all know it's work. You know
- 30:48Speaker 1: you have to get up at a certain time, yet
- 30:50Speaker 1: sometimes said hours run longer than what they should be
- 30:52Speaker 1: and sometimes in the conditions on what they should be.
- 30:55Speaker 1: But just about dealing with it and being a professional.
- 30:58Speaker 1: It's about maintaining relationships, I think and I feel you
- 31:00Speaker 1: understand the value of relationship. This whole business is relationships.
- 31:04Speaker 1: It's uh likability, and then it's talent. You know, your
- 31:08Speaker 1: talent can get you in the door. But if people
- 31:10Speaker 1: like you, if people understand that you are a hard worker,
- 31:12Speaker 1: if people understand that you won't waste their time, you know,
- 31:15Speaker 1: and on the other end, you've got to be doing
- 31:16Speaker 1: your due diligence to do your savings. I'm teaching my
- 31:19Speaker 1: son about credit and what that means and how to
- 31:22Speaker 1: make sure that you're saving and getting your life together.
- 31:24Speaker 1: So that should God say, you know what comes saying
- 31:26Speaker 1: up here? You're ready? You know, um, just really really
- 31:30Speaker 1: understanding the business of it, but also understanding the relationships
- 31:32Speaker 1: and the talent that comes with it. I'm talking to
- 31:34Speaker 1: Dmitria McKinney. She's the star of the new series. I'm saying,
- 31:37Speaker 1: star knows other people, but I'm interviewing you. So you
- 31:40Speaker 1: my star of the new series Motherland Fort Sailor. It's
- 31:43Speaker 1: said it's a it's a series of drama. When our
- 31:46Speaker 1: drama that said, let's just say action drama. Action drama
- 31:50Speaker 1: was said in an alternate America where which is? She said,
- 31:53Speaker 1: which a drill sergeant? Drill sergeant? Which right? And they
- 31:56Speaker 1: did their persecution over three years back. Couldn't they deal
- 31:59Speaker 1: with you? Government? To fight government? That's a government. Government,
- 32:05Speaker 1: you know somehow I say, I tried, I said government.
- 32:09Speaker 1: I can't believe. I said government, US government. Keep that
- 32:15Speaker 1: in government. Understand where I came from, straightfor for and
- 32:19Speaker 1: I ate some good ma cheese. If you go to
- 32:22Speaker 1: Walburg they remember men you they have good ma cheese.
- 32:24Speaker 1: They don't just they do. If you go to Walburg
- 32:26Speaker 1: Burgers they have you can get goovernment cheese. Okay, right
- 32:29Speaker 1: up there for with your handburgers. Okay, let me just
- 32:32Speaker 1: say the cut. They deal with the U. S. Government
- 32:35Speaker 1: to fight for their country. As we wrap up, just
