- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. And when you're ready, let's
- 0:30dive into God's Word together. In Acts chapter 17, Paul meets a
- 0:45really special group of Jews as his missionary journeys take him
- 0:49to a place called Berea. There's not much scriptural real
- 0:52estate devoted to this group, but the few verses where we see
- 0:55them in this chapter serve as a powerful example for us on how
- 0:58we ought to receive the Word. Listen to these verses.
- 1:02The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to
- 1:04Berea, and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue of
- 1:07the Jews. Now these were more noble minded
- 1:09than those in Thessalonica, for they received the Word with
- 1:12great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether
- 1:16these things were so. Therefore, many of them
- 1:19believed, along with a number of prominent Greek women and men.
- 1:23So Paul and Silas arrive at Berea, and as was their custom,
- 1:26they began teaching in the synagogue about Jesus and the
- 1:29good news of the gospel and listen to how these Bereans
- 1:32received the Word. This would have been new
- 1:34teaching for them. They did not know that Jesus was
- 1:37the Messiah. They were hearing the gospel for
- 1:39the first time, but they didn't respond with immediate rejection
- 1:42as many did. Nor did they have the attitude
- 1:44of the Athenians later in this chapter, who used to spend their
- 1:47time in nothing other than telling or hearing something
- 1:49new. No, these Bereans receive the
- 1:52message eagerly and take it straight to Scripture.
- 1:55They examine it, they test it. They weigh it against the
- 1:58revealed Word of God that they did have.
- 2:00And when they do, many of them realize that this message must
- 2:03be true. This message is in line with the
- 2:06Old Testament. This Jesus really is the
- 2:08Messiah. He really is the Son of God.
- 2:11He really did die to atone for the sins of the world.
- 2:14And he really did rise again on the third day.
- 2:17In First John, we're told to test the spirits to see if
- 2:20they're from God. Paul in Galatians 18 tells us.
- 2:24But even if we are an Angel from heaven should preach to you a
- 2:26gospel contrary to what we have preached to you.
- 2:29He's to be accursed. We have received God's word, and
- 2:32everything else we hear can and must be tested against the
- 2:36revealed word of God. We don't accept a teaching as
- 2:39facts simply because the messenger is eloquent or because
- 2:42he appears trustworthy. We don't accept a teaching is
- 2:45true just because it sounds palatable to us.
- 2:47No, we test it against God's infallible, inerrant, sufficient
- 2:52word. Every day we are presented with
- 2:55thousands, millions of little ideas, little sales pitches that
- 2:59presume themselves to be true. Be Berean.
- 3:02Test what you read, test what you hear.
- 3:05Test what you were taught against the truth of God's Word
- 3:09and eagerly receive what is from Him.
