- 0:00Hello, my love lies, and welcome back to another episode of
- 0:03Aligned and Thriving for Teachers.
- 0:06Although I have to say, today's episode isn't just for teachers.
- 0:10This one is really for anyone who's ever felt completely
- 0:13drained after a conversation, overwhelmed by someone else's
- 0:17mood, or like they're constantly carrying energy that's not even
- 0:21theirs. Yep, we're talking about toxic
- 0:26energy. Now before you roll your eyes or
- 0:29picture some woo woo sage burning situation, stay with me.
- 0:33This is practical real life stuff that I've had to learn and
- 0:36live through, especially during my coaching certification.
- 0:41So what I've discovered about my energy, mindset, identity and
- 0:45behaviour have literally changed how I show up in every area of
- 0:49my of my life. So let's dive in.
- 0:52What is toxic energy? Really?
- 0:57Toxic energy is basically unhealed energy.
- 1:00When someone's operating from pain, stress, resentment,
- 1:04trauma, or just emotional wounds that they haven't dealt with,
- 1:08that stuff leaks out. It becomes the energy that they
- 1:12transmit through their words, their tone, and sometimes just
- 1:15even their presence. But here's the thing I want to
- 1:18be really super clear on. A toxic person is not the same
- 1:24as a bad person. They're just someone carrying
- 1:28some really unhealed stuff, and we all do that sometimes.
- 1:33You could be someone's hero and also someone else's villain.
- 1:37I've had people in my life that I've looked up to when I've had
- 1:40others that couldn't stand them. And why?
- 1:43Because people have had different experiences of us
- 1:46depending on where we're at in certain aspects of our lives.
- 1:50So it's not about judgement, it's about awareness, awareness
- 1:55of what you're absorbing and what you're giving off to.
- 1:59So where does toxic energy really come from?
- 2:03Can come from people going through their own toxic
- 2:06experiences and then it sort of feeds off them.
- 2:09It can come from spending too much time listening or engaging
- 2:12with toxic people. It can be coming from constant
- 2:16complaining, negativity, or just judgmental environments.
- 2:20And it can come from us when we're stuck in that loop of
- 2:23gossip, blame or burnout. The truth is, if you're
- 2:28surrounded by toxic energy long enough, or if you're holding on
- 2:32to some unhealed emotions, you will start releasing it too.
- 2:37But here's the powerful part. You don't have to take it on.
- 2:42You can learn to recognise it, release it and protect yourself
- 2:47from it. So here's some signs that you
- 2:52might be in some toxic energy or you're carrying it.
- 2:57You might feel drained after certain conversations.
- 3:00You notice you're constantly venting, complaining or blaming.
- 3:08You feel like you're walking on egg shells around someone in
- 3:11particular. You catch yourself spiralling
- 3:15over things you can't control, and you're reacting more than
- 3:19you're responding. And here's the big one.
- 3:22If you're saying some things over and over and nothing
- 3:26changes, it might be the time to pause and check in on your own
- 3:32energy. So there's a few signs that's
- 3:36not all of them, but that's just a few things that might point
- 3:39out to you that you're sitting in that toxic energy space.
- 3:43Now I want to talk to you about a concept that's really changed
- 3:46the game for me, and that's mindset to identity to
- 3:50behaviour. You have to shift your mindset
- 3:54first. Then over time that new mindset
- 3:59becomes part of your identity and then what happens?
- 4:03Well, your behaviour naturally flows on from that.
- 4:06It's like how we teach kids, the first do this, then you get
- 4:10that. You don't get a student to write
- 4:12an essay or write something a massive story before they know
- 4:16how to write a sentence, do you? It's the same thing here.
- 4:20You can't expect to set yourself strong boundaries or protect
- 4:23your peace if your mindset is still stuck in that people
- 4:27pleasing guilt or survival type mode.
- 4:31So for me, I had to start seeing myself as someone who protects
- 4:35her energy. That's my identity now.
- 4:38And because of that, my behaviour has shifted.
- 4:41I prioritise my morning routines.
- 4:44I go for a walk on the beach when I can.
- 4:47I say no without an apology because that's who I am now.
- 4:51I don't have to stand up for that.
- 4:53I mean, like, yes, I'm standing up for myself, but I don't have
- 4:57to justify that to anyone else, I should say, because that's me.
- 5:02And remember, you come first. Which leads me into my next
- 5:05point, which is another mindset model that I am working on and
- 5:10trying my best to be better at, which is the I, We O OK, We also
- 5:18do this in our teaching. I do, we do, you do.
- 5:21That's pretty much the same thing.
- 5:23But this is I, we O. You have to start with yourself.
- 5:28And if you haven't got that over the past few episodes of self
- 5:31care, you really need to start getting that message.
- 5:34It starts with you. You can't care for your
- 5:37students, your partner, your family, your team if you haven't
- 5:40checked in with yourself first. You cannot pour from an empty
- 5:45cup. But so many of us do.
- 5:49And we flip the script and we go all we, I we focus on everyone.
- 5:54We focus on the group, the class.
- 5:56Then we worry about ourselves. We're taking care of everyone
- 6:00else. The school, the house, the
- 6:02inbox. Then maybe, maybe you just find
- 6:05yourself 5 minutes at the end of the day to collapse on the
- 6:08couch. And that is where burnout lives.
- 6:12That's where resentment grows. That is where toxic energy
- 6:16builds and thrives because you are operating from a place of
- 6:21absolute depletion. There's nothing there.
- 6:24So for me, I know I am not my best self.
- 6:27If I do not do my morning routine, if I screw, if I skip
- 6:31my breathwork, if I don't walk on the beach, I get snappy and
- 6:37I'm not just carrying that toxic energy.
- 6:40I then start passing it on. And if you're a parent, you'll
- 6:44see this reflected in your kids instantly.
- 6:46Because if you start throwing off those negative vibes, that
- 6:49toxic energy, they will thrive on it and they will poke and
- 6:53prod and set off every button imaginable just because they've
- 6:56started to get that energy too. And that's the easiest way to
- 6:59prove to you all that toxic energy spreads.
- 7:02It's like a virus. It will go viral.
- 7:06Like I want this podcast to, I want this to go viral, but I do
- 7:09not want your toxic energy to be spread along to everyone else.
- 7:13So let yourself come first. I first, then we together, then
- 7:19everyone. That's when the magic happens.
- 7:22So how are you going to release this toxic energy?
- 7:25So what do you do when you're carrying it?
- 7:29I've got some practical ways to help you release it.
- 7:32So I've learned a lot, as I said, through my coaching
- 7:34course. But to help you a bit more,
- 7:37there are a few things that you can do to help release it in a
- 7:39Safeway where you're not releasing it onto others.
- 7:42The first one's movement. So this is like your sport for
- 7:45me. I play hockey.
- 7:46Like I've said before, you might go for a walk, you might dance,
- 7:50you might shake, you might punch a pillow.
- 7:53If you want to get your vibe back to a really high vibe
- 7:55state, this is the car karaoke, singing your heart out to
- 8:00whatever song it might be. And there are some really good
- 8:04car karaoke playlists on Spotify if you just search.
- 8:07You can find yourself one that fits your era and sing your
- 8:10heart out. This will get you back into the
- 8:11high vibe state. If you're not a singer, maybe
- 8:13you're a dancer. Dance around your kitchen, put
- 8:16on a song and dance. You ask my children, they love
- 8:20rocking out and having a bit of a dance moment and it just puts
- 8:23everyone's vibe back in that positive state.
- 8:25So you might do one of those things when it comes to
- 8:27movement. It might be a ceremonial type
- 8:30thing. You might write down all of your
- 8:32frustrations and then you could burn it or RIP it up.
- 8:36And when I say burn it, please do it safely.
- 8:37Like do it in the sink. We can put it out or do it
- 8:40outside in your incinerator, whatever it might be.
- 8:42And yes, I've done this before. I have written down everything
- 8:45bad that happened to me in a year because I was over that
- 8:48year and I wanted to be wiped clean of it.
- 8:50So I got it all out, Bits of paper, I think there's about 10
- 8:54pages. Got it all done.
- 8:55And then when we lit a massive bonfire, I basically said
- 8:59goodbye to all of that negative energy and I burnt it.
- 9:01Like that's all it needs to be. You might do breath work now.
- 9:06This helps to really slow down your nervous system and regulate
- 9:10yourself. And it doesn't have to be hard.
- 9:13I've talked to you about this before.
- 9:14It is just focusing on your breath because what you take in
- 9:19then goes out. You can imagine in your head
- 9:23that you are breathing in positive energy and you are
- 9:26breathing out all of those toxic emotions.
- 9:30OK, so if you need to practise, it's just like this.
- 9:32You breathe in for four, all that positive.
- 9:35So you go in, hold, and then as you breathe out, that would be
- 9:44releasing all of that toxic energy.
- 9:47When you would do that and slow yourself down, you can start out
- 9:51with five, maybe go up to 10 times, and then you've reset
- 9:55your nervous system and you're releasing some of that energy.
- 9:59You might also do some anger work.
- 10:02This is safe release. This is if you've ever gone to
- 10:05Melbourne and chucked axes or broken plates, like all those
- 10:08fun things. If you find those fun activities
- 10:10to do in the holidays, that might be a good way to do it
- 10:12because you're not taking your anger out on someone else.
- 10:16You might also choose to journal, which again, that's
- 10:19part of my routine. I journal and you can get rid of
- 10:22some of the stuff that you're holding on to.
- 10:23So what are you really holding on to here and release it?
- 10:27I did create some journaling prompts and things for teachers
- 10:30by teachers, So if you have a look there, that will help you
- 10:33there as well. And then last but not least is
- 10:36mindfulness. So coming back into your body
- 10:38and the present moment and focusing on all of those good
- 10:41things, you might find a really good mindfulness clip on YouTube
- 10:47or again, Smiling Mind or another mindfulness app that you
- 10:50might like to use for that. You just need to find what works
- 10:54for you. For me, as I've said before, I
- 10:56love movement, my breath work, my journaling, my mindfulness.
- 10:59There's a whole bunch that I do. It's not just one, it just
- 11:02depends on the day. But I will always do my
- 11:04journaling of a night and I'll always work on my breath work or
- 11:07mindfulness stuff in the morning to try and set myself up for the
- 11:10day. So that's working on you.
- 11:12But what about if you have to handle other people's toxic
- 11:15energy? So let's be real, you're going
- 11:17to encounter toxic energy in other people.
- 11:19It's inevitable. There's no avoiding it.
- 11:22OK, so here's what you're going to have to try and do.
- 11:25Call out the behaviour, not the person, like, oh hey, that kind
- 11:31of energy doesn't feel good for me.
- 11:34Or you need to detach yourself. But do what we love, like do it
- 11:38in the loving way. I get that you're going through
- 11:40something, but I just can't carry that for you.
- 11:44You can use boundary language when you say this, I feel this
- 11:50and I need space when that happens.
- 11:52And I've had to use that language before and I've
- 11:54certainly had to use that language before within my family
- 11:57space because we can go in those negative spirals.
- 12:01And I've had to say, look, when you say these words, I really, I
- 12:03feel really hurt and I need some space from you right now.
- 12:07I just need some time. Give me a minute.
- 12:09And they have some time to reflect on their behaviour as
- 12:11well. You might need to reflect on the
- 12:14truth. Like I understand you believe
- 12:16that, but here's the full picture.
- 12:18And top, top, top, top, top priority, especially if you're a
- 12:23people pleaser, do not take it personally because it's not
- 12:27about you. It is them.
- 12:29It is like when you're looking at the child, you love the child
- 12:33but you don't like the behaviour, you like the person.
- 12:37It is just the behaviour. They're not a toxic person, it's
- 12:41toxic energy. It's all their unprocessed stuff
- 12:44that they have to deal with. So again, if someone's refusing
- 12:48to take responsibility for their owner own energy, it is OK for
- 12:51you to walk away because you're allowed to choose your piece.
- 12:55Can these people with toxic energy change?
- 12:58Yes, absolutely, but only if they want to because the work is
- 13:04on them. It is all about them and
- 13:07changing themselves. You can't change them.
- 13:11You can maybe guide them to a direction to work on themselves,
- 13:15but they're not going to change just because you want them to.
- 13:19They're not going to change because you try to change them.
- 13:21You can love them, you can support them, but you are not
- 13:26responsible for their healing. Your job is to protect your
- 13:30peace and your energy. They have to work on them.
- 13:34But as I said, you can love, you can support, but they're the
- 13:38only ones that can change that toxic energy themselves.
- 13:41OK, the same as you, it's I, we all.
- 13:45So my final thoughts for you today, here's what I want you to
- 13:49remember. Toxic energy isn't about bad
- 13:52people, it's about unhealed energy and you don't have to
- 13:56take that on. You can shift your own energy by
- 13:59starting with your mindset, changing to working on your
- 14:02identity and then it's becoming a behaviour.
- 14:06Put you first, you first is I, then the we, then all and
- 14:12finally you deserve to live and work in alignment not just
- 14:17survival. OK, Protect your peace, love
- 14:21people without absorbing all of their stuff and always, always
- 14:25come back to your why. Why are you doing this?
- 14:29What do you love about it? Why are you here?
- 14:31Because that will help bring you back.
- 14:33So thank you for joining me again today.
