- 0:00Speaker 1: My next guest, So I'm about to bring up on
- 0:01Speaker 1: my first guest on the show is a dear friend
- 0:04Speaker 1: in the entertainment business. Um. Wow, she's interviewed me the
- 0:08Speaker 1: first time I'm actually interviewing her. I've been on her panels.
- 0:12Speaker 1: It's been a great relationship over the years, sinciety, when
- 0:15Speaker 1: I first brought the Neighborhood Awards to Atlanta, Georgia back
- 0:18Speaker 1: in when we first really really started establishing our relationship.
- 0:22Speaker 1: My next guest is the founder of the Bronze Lens
- 0:25Speaker 1: Film Festival of Atlanta, Georgia, is a nonprofit organization founded
- 0:30Speaker 1: in two thousand nine that is dedicated to bring in
- 0:33Speaker 1: national and worldwide attention to Atlanta as a center for
- 0:37Speaker 1: film and film production for people of color. She has
- 0:41Speaker 1: received the Spiritual Enlightenment Award from the Trumpets Awards and
- 0:45Speaker 1: was honored at P and C Bank celebrates Atlanta's African
- 0:48Speaker 1: American creative community. Please welcome to Money Making Conversation. Kathleen Bertrand,
- 0:55Speaker 1: good morning, Good morning, my friend. How you doing. Wonder
- 1:00Speaker 1: so good to hear your boy to be talking to you.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Ushaw one of my favorite people in the whole world. Well,
- 1:07Speaker 1: I appreciate that we've we've I've been fortunate to be
- 1:10Speaker 1: a part of your film festival. I believe I just
- 1:14Speaker 1: recently were there with Miss Guy to Behavior, which was
- 1:16Speaker 1: Greed at your film festival. I did that with Sharon Thomlinson,
- 1:20Speaker 1: a really great project to receive a lot of good
- 1:23Speaker 1: reviews and responses, very emotional about bullying in school and
- 1:28Speaker 1: that's a big topic. And then I also I believe
- 1:30Speaker 1: I had Steve Harvey's uh stand up piece that we
- 1:34Speaker 1: shot at Las Vegas. Yeah. Yeah, allowed us to present
- 1:39Speaker 1: that at a special midnight screening that was at the
- 1:45Speaker 1: absolutely and so my relationship is one of trust, and
- 1:50Speaker 1: so having you on the show today means that uh,
- 1:53Speaker 1: trying to tell people to be successful in anything, you
- 1:56Speaker 1: have to have relationships, and you have to have people
- 1:58Speaker 1: that believe in your brand want to help you promote
- 2:00Speaker 1: your brain. And that's what we only show the day
- 2:02Speaker 1: to help you promote your brain. I love it, Thank you,
- 2:06Speaker 1: So tell two nine it's just an idea. We only
- 2:10Speaker 1: have ideas. How did your idea come to? I guess
- 2:14Speaker 1: a reality? UM, A lot of hard work, UM, calling
- 2:20Speaker 1: on friends, relationship with the one, and calling on persons
- 2:25Speaker 1: that had been previous sponsors for other things. I do
- 2:29Speaker 1: relationship level two. So let me just explain. I used
- 2:32Speaker 1: to work for the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, and
- 2:36Speaker 1: it was in my role as Senior vice president of
- 2:39Speaker 1: Community and Government Affairs there that Bronze Lenn started with
- 2:44Speaker 1: an idea from my CEO, who said, well, you know,
- 2:48Speaker 1: Atlanta doesn't really have anything in black film film festivals
- 2:53Speaker 1: that really draw national attention. And I said, well, there's
- 2:56Speaker 1: several local things going on. He says, no, but you
- 3:00Speaker 1: know this national. Now, we need national attention because Tyler
- 3:04Speaker 1: Perry has a studio here. That's what he would always say.
- 3:07Speaker 1: And so I spent about that was actually in the
- 3:09Speaker 1: late two thousand and eight. So two thousand nine was
- 3:12Speaker 1: about research and finding out what was in the market, um,
- 3:16Speaker 1: who was in the market, what was national that's going
- 3:19Speaker 1: on in this realm of of black cinema, and then
- 3:23Speaker 1: calling on people that I knew. So I started calling
- 3:27Speaker 1: on my friend Cheryl Grippler, who was vice president at
- 3:31Speaker 1: Community Affairs at at Channel eleven w x I, a
- 3:34Speaker 1: t V Atlanta, and after a few meetings with Cheryl,
- 3:39Speaker 1: she eventually called on Didre McDonald Um, who was also
- 3:44Speaker 1: at Channel eleven at one time and she was an
- 3:47Speaker 1: instructor at Clark Atlanta University, had an Emmy in television,
- 3:52Speaker 1: and UH had that production and film background, and single
- 3:57Speaker 1: they became with me the three legs of the stool
- 4:00Speaker 1: that held up ron Lenz and got us on rolling UM.
- 4:06Speaker 1: The great thing about having Sheryl on board and and
- 4:09Speaker 1: and me as well as that we had great corporate
- 4:12Speaker 1: relationships from our work and the jobs that we did,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and so we started calling on those people. And when
- 4:19Speaker 1: I can tell you that we had major sponsors that
- 4:22Speaker 1: gave to us that year strictly because they knew our
- 4:26Speaker 1: work and our work ethics. We had no god to
- 4:31Speaker 1: say this is what it looked like last year. We
- 4:34Speaker 1: had no UH film video to say, you know, here's
- 4:38Speaker 1: how great at what nothing. We only had a PowerPoint
- 4:42Speaker 1: presentation and our word And when you talk about marketing, UM,
- 4:48Speaker 1: I made sure that our graphics looked like we've been
- 4:52Speaker 1: here ten years. And you know what I'm saying, because
- 4:55Speaker 1: when you walk in the door, it's got all of
- 4:57Speaker 1: the be all about the professionalism of what it is
- 5:00Speaker 1: that you're representing. But when I say that I had
- 5:03Speaker 1: sponsors that came on that year, and some of them
- 5:06Speaker 1: are still with me based strictly on relationships. So that's
- 5:11Speaker 1: very important, having honest, authentic relationships with people that you
- 5:17Speaker 1: do business with as well as with your friends. And
- 5:19Speaker 1: that's important. That's important that you say that. And also
- 5:21Speaker 1: in presentation wise, you know, pictures that look stretched, you know,
- 5:26Speaker 1: just because it looks good on a screen, know that
- 5:29Speaker 1: you might walk in some of these rooms and you
- 5:31Speaker 1: might be on a sixty X treme off and that
- 5:35Speaker 1: pictures real blurry, real fast. And so what you also
- 5:40Speaker 1: can make people they might not comment while in front
- 5:43Speaker 1: of you, but they walk out there and saying that
- 5:45Speaker 1: sloppy or that was that was cheesy, exactly exactly. And
- 5:49Speaker 1: so what my years, um, and you know that that
- 5:53Speaker 1: job taught me was the power of a good presentation,
- 5:57Speaker 1: right right, right right. I had one of so many
- 6:00Speaker 1: times before, but really, um, and even in my career
- 6:04Speaker 1: as a singer, when I put out my first CD,
- 6:07Speaker 1: uh and I had it designed, I said, I wanted
- 6:10Speaker 1: it to look like anything that could sit on the
- 6:12Speaker 1: record store shelf back then next to Nancy Wilson or
- 6:17Speaker 1: next to the Sander Wilson or any of those great people,
- 6:20Speaker 1: Diane reads, those people that I've followed, and do you
- 6:22Speaker 1: know what, That's exactly what happened when my first CD
- 6:25Speaker 1: came out. They did not put it in the the
- 6:29Speaker 1: Atlanta section. They put it in the Jazz section with
- 6:32Speaker 1: all the other national honorts because that's what they thought
- 6:35Speaker 1: I was because it looked like it, you know, show
- 6:38Speaker 1: and tail, and you showed, and they and they allowed
- 6:41Speaker 1: to believe that this is a higher level or the
- 6:44Speaker 1: higher level quality, all right. And that's why that's how
- 6:47Speaker 1: it really works in this business, is your presentation and
- 6:50Speaker 1: how you put the effort. It's by the effort, you know.
- 6:53Speaker 1: And that's what you're talking about it right there now,
- 6:55Speaker 1: two thousand nine, and you're coming up on your tenth anniversary.
- 6:58Speaker 1: So so we want we're going to wrap this segment
- 7:01Speaker 1: up here because I want to save time for the
- 7:03Speaker 1: next break. We're go in detail because you know, I'm
- 7:05Speaker 1: a little jealous because you know, I didn't have an
- 7:07Speaker 1: award show, and so you're have an awards you I
- 7:11Speaker 1: have Rodney Perry, your host on on my show last
- 7:14Speaker 1: week promoting everything, and you got comedian Jonathan's logan. We're
- 7:18Speaker 1: gonna talk about all these people. Oh, I said, I was,
- 7:21Speaker 1: I said, I was sad to be a participant, But
- 7:23Speaker 1: you you upgraded the game here, Mrs Dethlete. You know
- 7:29Speaker 1: your sponsors gotta be happy when you talk about the
- 7:31Speaker 1: award show and everything. But that's what you're doing ten
- 7:34Speaker 1: years though, That's what you doing ten years. I'm gone.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I've been in the room with her team, eating launches,
- 7:40Speaker 1: we're talking ideas. So she knows how how happy happy
- 7:44Speaker 1: I am because I walked in and she's can you
- 7:47Speaker 1: come by? And come by? I think tank and I'm
- 7:49Speaker 1: part of that process with her because I love seeing
- 7:52Speaker 1: people with an idea start work hard for the idea
- 7:56Speaker 1: and then help them get to the next level with
- 7:58Speaker 1: that idea. And that's what she's doing with Bronze Lands.
- 8:00Speaker 1: We'll come back. We're gonna continuous conversation with the founder
- 8:04Speaker 1: of Bronze Lands. The tenure anniversary is happening. She's got
- 8:07Speaker 1: a great film that she's airing. An Oscar winning actor
- 8:10Speaker 1: is gonna be appearing. Don't go nowhere. This money made
- 8:13Speaker 1: a conversation. You listening to ra Sean McDonald. This is
- 8:16Speaker 1: how we do it here, big time, big money, big people. Hi,
- 8:22Speaker 1: this Ra Sean McDonald, you're back, I'm back, or you're back,
- 8:26Speaker 1: or we're all back together listening to money making conversations.
- 8:29Speaker 1: I have the founder of the Bronze Lands Film Foundation
- 8:31Speaker 1: that was found in the two thousand nine and this
- 8:34Speaker 1: year celebrating the tenth anniversary of Bronze Lands on the phone,
- 8:36Speaker 1: it is Kathleen. Kathleen. This Saturday, you have the tenth
- 8:41Speaker 1: annual Bronze Lands Award Show, hosted by comedian actor Rodney Perry,
- 8:45Speaker 1: and on the red carpet, comedian Jonathan Slocum tell us
- 8:50Speaker 1: the whole concept. Why an award show this year? Tell
- 8:54Speaker 1: us about it? Well, we've actually had an awards show,
- 8:58Speaker 1: Rashawn for nine of our ten years. The first year, um,
- 9:03Speaker 1: we did our awards show at a club and and
- 9:07Speaker 1: we name the winners and called people up. Um, you
- 9:11Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. But by that second year, we
- 9:13Speaker 1: knew we had something special and we needed to honor
- 9:16Speaker 1: these people in in the in the correct setting. But
- 9:19Speaker 1: it has really he's grown every every year since we've
- 9:22Speaker 1: been at dad show. We've been at the High Museum
- 9:25Speaker 1: and this year we're at the Carter Center in the
- 9:28Speaker 1: day Auditorium and uh, just so tremendously excited about it
- 9:33Speaker 1: because it's a concept this year that I've wanted since
- 9:36Speaker 1: we started, which was to have that kind of setting,
- 9:39Speaker 1: kind of like the SAG Awards, where there's some tables
- 9:43Speaker 1: that are you know, people are sitting around the tables,
- 9:45Speaker 1: and then there are others where their seats around them,
- 9:48Speaker 1: and so we actually will have that kind of look
- 9:51Speaker 1: to the awards this year. And you started off with
- 9:54Speaker 1: our filmmakers arriving and getting a chance to encounter Jonathan Slocum.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Oh my god, he's such a funny guy, good friend
- 10:03Speaker 1: originally flum Atlanta and a friend of ours for many years.
- 10:07Speaker 1: And when our filmmakers arrive on the on the bronze carpet,
- 10:11Speaker 1: we make them feel special that this is your night,
- 10:15Speaker 1: and h our videography team and our social media team
- 10:20Speaker 1: as they're taking their pictures and recording it for social media.
- 10:24Speaker 1: And then they go in and we will announce over
- 10:27Speaker 1: the course of the night the winner of the Best Feature,
- 10:30Speaker 1: the winner of the Best Short. By the way, the
- 10:33Speaker 1: winner of the Best Short award will have the opportunity
- 10:37Speaker 1: to apply to the Oscars to be in their short
- 10:40Speaker 1: film competition. Because Bronze Lens is now an Oscar qualifying
- 10:46Speaker 1: film festival for the Short Film Award, we will also
- 10:49Speaker 1: announce the best dr Now let's let's let's not go
- 10:53Speaker 1: past that real fast, Kathleen, Kathleen, let's you know. Okay,
- 10:59Speaker 1: that's why you have people were shot to slowdown when
- 11:01Speaker 1: you say great things. Okay, we're Oscar qualifying now, people
- 11:06Speaker 1: need to hear that. Yes, so we are. We are
- 11:10Speaker 1: our third year as a qualifying film festival with a
- 11:14Speaker 1: short Film award, and actually the Bronze Lens a short
- 11:18Speaker 1: film winner last year made it into the short list
- 11:23Speaker 1: for the Oscars Short Film Award. This past year they
- 11:26Speaker 1: made it into the top ten out of one d
- 11:29Speaker 1: and forty entries from around the country. So we were
- 11:33Speaker 1: very excited about that filmmaker and we're hopefully hopefully this
- 11:39Speaker 1: year our winner will will go just as far. Because
- 11:42Speaker 1: that's that's that's beautiful, because it's like letting people know
- 11:45Speaker 1: that they have because everybody wants to know how they
- 11:47Speaker 1: can participate, how they can get in, how they can
- 11:50Speaker 1: get their their talents showcase. And you're telling them right now,
- 11:54Speaker 1: if you have a short film, you can enter into
- 11:57Speaker 1: Bronze Lens Film Festival, and if you win, you qualified
- 12:02Speaker 1: to be on the OSCAR list. You can qualify to
- 12:06Speaker 1: submit to the because that's the only way you can
- 12:09Speaker 1: get on it. You can't just well, I want to
- 12:11Speaker 1: send myself if you have to come to one of
- 12:14Speaker 1: the one of the approved portals, which Bronze Lens is
- 12:18Speaker 1: one of those, one of only two in the state
- 12:20Speaker 1: of Georgia. So this is happening Saturday, August twenty four
- 12:26Speaker 1: and hosted by Rodney Perry. Good funny guy, very good actor.
- 12:31Speaker 1: You know. So you've got comedy on the red carpet
- 12:34Speaker 1: and you've got comedy on your stage, so you're gonna
- 12:37Speaker 1: so you're gonna keep everything moving along with energy, that's
- 12:40Speaker 1: what you're saying. And we want everybody to feel good.
- 12:43Speaker 1: I mean, the awards is the culmination of all the
- 12:47Speaker 1: work that a filmmaker has done to even submit. They
- 12:49Speaker 1: may have submitted as early as last November, and then
- 12:53Speaker 1: they got past the initial screening and made it to
- 12:56Speaker 1: the official selections list and they got passed back to
- 13:01Speaker 1: make it to the being a nominee. So this is
- 13:05Speaker 1: the culmination of their Bronze Lens experiences to come to
- 13:08Speaker 1: the Bronze Lens Awards, and we are being dressed uh
- 13:11Speaker 1: African sheep in black time. So somebody's going to be
- 13:16Speaker 1: very elegant, you know here and that's right, that's right. Now,
- 13:20Speaker 1: here's the elegance in the in the cachet of talent
- 13:24Speaker 1: just keeps growing. Regina Hall. A conversation with Regina Hall again.
- 13:30Speaker 1: He has comedian host Kim Cole's comedian Mira J from
- 13:35Speaker 1: from the Agent, from the from the Tom join the
- 13:38Speaker 1: Morning Show. Very talent writer comedian Mira j and Kim
- 13:41Speaker 1: Cole again more levity, more energy. Uh, tell us about
- 13:48Speaker 1: the conversation with Regina. That's happening on Friday, auguste. That's right.
- 13:54Speaker 1: On Friday there we will have the Women's Superstars Luncheon.
- 13:59Speaker 1: This is our signature events for the festival. It's a
- 14:02Speaker 1: fundraiser for us and every year. In addition to having
- 14:08Speaker 1: a group of amazing honorees like Ava Duvernet or Lynn
- 14:12Speaker 1: Woodfield or Margaret Avery, who've all been honored by Bronze
- 14:16Speaker 1: Lends in the past, we also started about three years
- 14:19Speaker 1: ago a conversation with one of those persons that we
- 14:23Speaker 1: thought could really pique the interest of the audience, and
- 14:26Speaker 1: so this year. It is m Regina Hall, most recently
- 14:30Speaker 1: of Little and we just have loved her for many years.
- 14:35Speaker 1: She actually came to Bronze Lens back in twenty twelve,
- 14:39Speaker 1: or when we showed Best Man Holiday as our closing sound.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Don't forget that. My two movies, my two movies Thinking
- 14:48Speaker 1: Like a Man, Thinking Like Aunt too. Yeah, that's right, thought,
- 14:53Speaker 1: my love accomplishments under the She's talented. She's one of
- 14:58Speaker 1: my favorite people. I was just living everybod I know,
- 15:00Speaker 1: her resume is extensive. You know she's been Uh she's
- 15:03Speaker 1: at the forefront of what I think. Uh, just just
- 15:06Speaker 1: just seeing her talent and just natural. She's you know,
- 15:09Speaker 1: talk shows with me. I brought out on this guests
- 15:12Speaker 1: and to have a conversation with her. Anybody who's interested
- 15:15Speaker 1: in the business, you should go because it's about longevity,
- 15:18Speaker 1: it's about showing the versatility and and and her acting portfolio.
- 15:23Speaker 1: It's what she's gonna just what's gonna be revealed. That's
- 15:25Speaker 1: Regina Hall. I had a twice in two of my
- 15:28Speaker 1: movies that was based on Steve Harvey's book Act Like
- 15:31Speaker 1: a Lady, Think Like a Man and worldwide solo with
- 15:34Speaker 1: two hundred million dollars at the box office. That's amazing.
- 15:38Speaker 1: I didn't even realize your numbers were like that. Come on, man,
- 15:41Speaker 1: come on man, you know we bun Land. All right,
- 15:44Speaker 1: I'm with success. You're celebrating ten years because of the relationship.
- 15:47Speaker 1: That's why you're out there at the forefront of being
- 15:50Speaker 1: able to promote of uh, you know, projects of people
- 15:53Speaker 1: of color getting there, to get the ideas out there,
- 15:56Speaker 1: because if we carry a major value at the box office.
- 16:00Speaker 1: You know, people know that African American or minorities watch TV,
- 16:04Speaker 1: but at the box office, we are a force. Because
- 16:06Speaker 1: when you go to these box office mojo or deadlines,
- 16:10Speaker 1: they breakdown the percentage of people uh ethnicity. They go
- 16:15Speaker 1: to movies they said like was afri Caucasian white, or
- 16:20Speaker 1: they said thirty was African Americans. So they do play up.
- 16:25Speaker 1: They do understand the value of who watches certain types
- 16:29Speaker 1: of movies, and that's why it's important. What you're doing
- 16:31Speaker 1: is amazing and so Regina Hall is on Thursday. On Friday,
- 16:35Speaker 1: August twenty thirties, Women's Superstars launching It's a big fund
- 16:39Speaker 1: raiser for you. On on Saturdays, the tent annual Bronze Leans,
- 16:42Speaker 1: a war show hosted by my Man Rodney pair with
- 16:45Speaker 1: Johnathan Slogan on the red carpet. Then on Wednesday, I
- 16:48Speaker 1: will be there opening knife film Don't Let Go. Tell
- 16:51Speaker 1: us about the Oscar winner that will be there. Well,
- 16:56Speaker 1: David or Yellow will be with us for his brand
- 17:00Speaker 1: new film which has not been in the theaters yet.
- 17:03Speaker 1: So this is a an Atlanta premier of Don't Let Go,
- 17:07Speaker 1: co stars David and also Storm Read the young lady
- 17:12Speaker 1: that was the lead in Ava du burn as a
- 17:16Speaker 1: Wrinkle in Time. And we're so excited to have this
- 17:19Speaker 1: opportunity to open up the festival with a studio film.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Every now and then we get we kind of you know,
- 17:25Speaker 1: the stars aligne and we get a chance to open
- 17:28Speaker 1: with a studio film, and so this is that film
- 17:31Speaker 1: for us, will be at Landmarks Midtown Theater and we're
- 17:35Speaker 1: just very excited because having a star like David who
- 17:39Speaker 1: has done so much work, and he's going to be
- 17:42Speaker 1: receiving an award from Bronze Lens, our trail Blazer Award
- 17:47Speaker 1: to honor his path as a classically trained actor who
- 17:52Speaker 1: has just done so much and inspired so many of
- 17:55Speaker 1: us with his career choices. Um, so we want every
- 18:00Speaker 1: we wanted to come out. You can go to our
- 18:02Speaker 1: website and get information about it, but certainly want to
- 18:05Speaker 1: pack the house for David and for our Bronze Lens
- 18:08Speaker 1: opening night when we kick off. So you only three
- 18:11Speaker 1: three social media banners. One for the opening night which
- 18:14Speaker 1: is uh, don't let go, and then on the Friday
- 18:18Speaker 1: that's Wednesday. Then on Friday the Women's Superstar launching Okay
- 18:22Speaker 1: Regina Hall, and then on Saturday the actual Bronze Land
- 18:26Speaker 1: Award show celebrating ten years of film success. In that,
- 18:30Speaker 1: I guess we have to see nationwide and in the
- 18:33Speaker 1: Atlanta community, and that's employed nationwide. Do you know I
- 18:37Speaker 1: had had films to be submitted from Bronze Lens from
- 18:40Speaker 1: thirty five countries this year than Justini Atlanta. But my friend,
- 18:48Speaker 1: I want to thank you for coming on the show.
- 18:50Speaker 1: You owe me, So I gotta get busy socially and
- 18:52Speaker 1: good luck and you'll see me on Wednesday at your
- 18:55Speaker 1: opening night
