- 0:00Luke Chapter 7 When he had completed all his discourse and
- 0:03the hearing of the people, he went to Capernaum, and a
- 0:06centurion slave, who was highly regarded by him, was sick and
- 0:09about to die. When he heard about Jesus, he
- 0:12sent some Jewish elders asking him to come and save the life of
- 0:15his slave. When they came to Jesus, they
- 0:18earnestly implored him, saying, He is worthy for you to grant
- 0:21this to him, for he loves our nation.
- 0:23And it was he who built us our synagogue.
- 0:26Now Jesus started on his way with them.
- 0:28When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent
- 0:30friends saying to him, Lord, do not trouble yourself further,
- 0:34for I am not worthy for you to come under my roof.
- 0:37For this reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come
- 0:39to you. But just say the word, and my
- 0:42servant will be healed. For I also am a man placed under
- 0:45authority, with soldiers under me.
- 0:48And I say to this one, Go, And he goes, and to another come,
- 0:51and he comes, and to my slave, do this, and he does it.
- 0:55Now when Jesus heard this, he marvelled at him and turned and
- 0:58said to the crowd that was following him.
- 1:00I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.
- 1:05When those who had been sent returned to the house, they
- 1:07found the slave in good health. Soon afterwards he went to a
- 1:10city called Nain, and his disciples were going along with
- 1:13him, accompanied by a large crowd.
- 1:16Now as he approached the gate of the city, a dead man was being
- 1:19carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and
- 1:23a sizable crowd from the city was with her.
- 1:25When the Lord saw her, he felt compassion for her and said to
- 1:28her, Do not weep. And he came up and touched the
- 1:31coffin, and the bearers came to a halt, and he said, Young man,
- 1:35I say to you, arise. The dead man sat up and began to
- 1:40speak, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
- 1:43Fear gripped them all and they began glorifying God, saying, A
- 1:47great prophet has arisen among us and God has visited his
- 1:50people. This report concerning him went
- 1:53all over Judea and in all the surrounding district.
- 1:57The disciples of John reported to him about all these things.
- 2:00Summoning 2 of his disciples, John sent them to the Lord
- 2:03saying, are you the expected one or do we look for someone else?
- 2:08When the men came to him, they said, John the Baptist has sent
- 2:11us to you to ask are you the expected one or do we look for
- 2:15someone else? At that very time he cured many
- 2:18people of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits,
- 2:21and he gave sight to many who were blind.
- 2:23And he answered and said to them, Go and report to John what
- 2:26you have seen and heard. The blind received sight, the
- 2:30lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear.
- 2:33The dead are raised up. The poor have the gospel
- 2:36preached to them. Blessed is he who does not take
- 2:39offence at me. When the messengers of John had
- 2:42left, he began to speak to the crowds about John.
- 2:45What did you go out into the wilderness to see?
- 2:47A Reed shaken by the wind. But what did you go out to see?
- 2:51A man dressed in soft clothing. Those who are splendidly clothed
- 2:56and live in luxury are found in royal palaces.
- 2:58But what did you go out to see? A prophet.
- 3:02Yes, I say to you. And one who is more than a
- 3:04prophet. This is the one about whom it is
- 3:06written. Behold, I send my messenger
- 3:08ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.
- 3:12I say to you, Among those born of women there is no one greater
- 3:14than John. Yet he who is least in the
- 3:17Kingdom of God is greater than he.
- 3:19When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they
- 3:22acknowledged God's justice, having been baptized with the
- 3:25baptism of John. But the Pharisees and the
- 3:28lawyers rejected God's purpose for themselves, not having been
- 3:32baptized by John. To what then shall I compare the
- 3:35men of this generation, and what are they like?
- 3:38They are like children who sit in the marketplace and call to
- 3:41one another. And they say, We played the
- 3:44flute for you, and you did not dance.
- 3:46We sang a dirge, and you did not weep.
- 3:49For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no
- 3:52wine, and you say he has a demon.
- 3:55The Son of Man has come eating and drinking.
- 3:57And you say, Behold, A gluttonous man and a drunkard, a
- 4:00friend of tax collectors and sinners.
- 4:03Yet wisdom is vindicated by all her children.
- 4:06Now one of the Pharisees was requesting him to dine with him,
- 4:09and he entered the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table.
- 4:12And there was a woman in the city who was a Sinner.
- 4:15And when she learned that he was reclining at the table in the
- 4:17Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume.
- 4:21And standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet
- 4:24his feet with her tears and kept wiping them with the hair of her
- 4:27head and kissing his feet and anointing them with the perfume.
- 4:31Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to
- 4:35himself, If this man were a prophet, he would know who and
- 4:38what sort of person this woman is who is touching him, that she
- 4:41is a Sinner. And Jesus answered him, Simon, I
- 4:45have something to say to you. And he replied, say it, teacher,
- 4:50a money lender had two debtors, 1 owed 500 denarii and the other
- 4:5450. When they were unable to repay,
- 4:56he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him
- 4:59more? Simon answered and said, I
- 5:02suppose the one whom he forgave more.
- 5:05And he said to him, You have judged correctly.
- 5:07Turning toward the woman, he said to Simon, do you see this
- 5:10woman? I entered your house.
- 5:12You gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet
- 5:15with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
- 5:18You gave me no kiss, but she, since the time I came in, has
- 5:21not ceased to kiss my feet. You did not anoint my head with
- 5:25oil, but she anointed my feet with perfume.
- 5:28For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have
- 5:32been forgiven, for she loved much, but he who has forgiven
- 5:35little loves little. Then he said to her, Your sins
- 5:40have been forgiven. Those who were reclining at the
- 5:42table with him began to say to themselves, who is this man who
- 5:46even forgives sins? And he said to the woman, Your
- 5:49faith has saved you. Go in peace.
