- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word. Together
- 0:44today we begin Luke's Gospel. This is the first of two New
- 0:48Testament books written by Luke, the second of which is Acts,
- 0:52both written as letters to a man named Theophilus.
- 0:55Whereas Matthew began his Gospel account with a genealogy and
- 0:58Mark began his with the beginning of Jesus ministry,
- 1:02Luke, under the authority of the Holy Spirit, begins with the
- 1:04account of the birth of John the Baptist.
- 1:07John is the forerunner to Jesus born to Elizabeth and Zacharias
- 1:11just a few months before Jesus was born.
- 1:14The story of John's birth is a miraculous one, and one that
- 1:17mirrors Jesus birth in several ways.
- 1:19It too involves a visit from Gabriel, a medically miraculous
- 1:23pregnancy, and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy.
- 1:27What I want us to focus in on though, is the prophecy that God
- 1:30speaks through Zacharias after the birth of John.
- 1:34Zacharias spent the better part of Elizabeth's pregnancy unable
- 1:37to speak after he was made mute as a result of doubting the word
- 1:41spoken to him by the Angel Gabriel.
- 1:44After John was born and named on the 8th day, Zacharias regained
- 1:48his ability to speak, listen to the prophetic word God speaks
- 1:51through him, speaking not primarily about this new baby
- 1:54John, but about the One whom John would later refer to as one
- 1:59coming who is mightier than I. Here is Zacharias prophecy.
- 2:04Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited us
- 2:07and accomplished redemption for His people, and has raised up a
- 2:10horn of salvation for us in the House of David His servant, as
- 2:14He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from from of old
- 2:17salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate
- 2:20us. To show mercy toward our fathers
- 2:23and to remember His holy covenant, the oath which He
- 2:26swore to Abraham our Father, to grant us that we, being rescued
- 2:30from the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear in
- 2:33holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.
- 2:36And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High,
- 2:40for you will go on before the Lord to prepare His ways, to
- 2:43give to His people the knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness
- 2:46of their sins. Because of the tender mercy of
- 2:48God, with which the sunrise from on high will visit us to shine
- 2:53upon those who sit in darkness in the shadow of death, to guide
- 2:57our feet into the way of peace. Here, through Zacharias, God is
- 3:02laying out the plan that has been in place from the very
- 3:04beginning. Redemption of God's people.
- 3:07God's salvation plan for His people is unfolding before their
- 3:10very eyes. God is fulfilling the promises
- 3:13He made back to Abraham and the patriarchs.
- 3:15And look at the language of verses 78 and 79.
- 3:18Because of the tender mercy of our God, with which the sunrise
- 3:22from on high will visit us to shine upon those who sit in
- 3:26darkness and the shadow of death to guide our feet into the way
- 3:30of peace. Jesus is coming, the sunrise
- 3:34from on high. This is Isaiah 9 language where
- 3:37we read. The people who walk in darkness
- 3:39will see a great light. Those who live in a dark land,
- 3:43the light will shine on them. The world is dark and full of
- 3:47sin and evil. The hearts of men are selfish
- 3:50and ingrown and have forgotten peace and light.
- 3:54But Jesus, the sunrise from on high is coming and everything is
- 3:59going to change.
