- 1:13I'm Jay Lauren Norris with leading Leaders Podcast.
- 1:18I am not a millionaire. I'm not a billionaire.
- 1:21I'm not a highly wealthy person. If you were to look at the four
- 1:24of five billion, I am probably not on the list.
- 1:29Ironically though, just based on the last few years, we're
- 1:34actually in like the top 10% of the world when it comes to
- 1:37income. Which is really sad because
- 1:41that's still not enough week to week sometimes just to keep the
- 1:45lights on. Literally.
- 1:49But there's something that you got to understand about wealth
- 1:53that I've spent five decades simply not knowing.
- 2:01There's a lot to be said for being able to go to the bank and
- 2:04say, hey, I want to buy a boat, I need to make a little
- 2:08withdrawal, I need to transfer the money to buy a house, and
- 2:11the down payment is just a breeze. 400,000 couple million,
- 2:17who cares? I I was listening to an
- 2:20interview recently and the interview guest said, you know,
- 2:23that kind of therapy is very expensive.
- 2:25It's like $25,000 in treatment and, and you got to have at
- 2:29least four of them. And the host said, oh, so about
- 2:33100 grand, yeah, not a problem. I wish I could say 100 grand,
- 2:38not a problem. I'm not in that place yet.
- 2:41But here's what I have discovered along the way.
- 2:45Most people who fret like I have most of my life about money do
- 2:52so thinking that money is the solution.
- 2:57The amount of money. If I just had one more comma in
- 3:01my bank deposits. If I just had one extra paycheck
- 3:06each month. Been working with a client who
- 3:10recently pointed out a great factor.
- 3:13They said, you know, I we used to work with the companies, a
- 3:15multi $1,000,000 company with a great leader.
- 3:18And what I found is that success hides dysfunction really well.
- 3:25Oh, that's a harsh 1. How many times have you heard?
- 3:29I know people with a lot of money and they're not happy.
- 3:32I, I've heard people say, I've heard John Maxwell say, I've
- 3:35heard him say face to face sitting in the room with him
- 3:38around lunch. I've heard him say, look, money
- 3:41doesn't make you happy. It just gives you options.
- 3:45Sometimes those options will make you happy.
- 3:48And we ask him, what do you mean by that?
- 3:50What kind of options are you talking about?
- 3:51He said, look, I, I like to drive.
- 3:54I like to drive myself when I have the chance, but I don't
- 3:58always need to. And I do have a driver when that
- 4:01opportunity is there. But when I can drive myself, I
- 4:04do. And I came out one day to get in
- 4:06my car and realized I had a flat tire.
- 4:08I was already in a suit. I didn't want to change my own
- 4:10tire. And I picked up the phone and I
- 4:12called a ride and my driver showed up and took me where I
- 4:14needed to go. He said 20 years ago, 30 years
- 4:18ago, back in the days when I was pastoring a church, that was not
- 4:22an option. My option was go back in, change
- 4:25into some scrubby clothes, change my tire, take another
- 4:27shower, put my suit back on, and then I could go where I was
- 4:30supposed to go. But picking up the phone and
- 4:32calling somebody else to provide my ride and someone else to fix
- 4:35my flat when I didn't have money, I didn't have those
- 4:39options. And maybe you haven't lived on
- 4:44the edge of just getting by where you have to decide, is it
- 4:49car insurance or is it the cell phone bill?
- 4:51Is it car insurance, the cell phone bill, or the electric
- 4:53bill? If you've never lived there,
- 4:56that's a whole new level of stress.
- 4:59I watched my mom struggle through that for a long time.
- 5:03Do we put the tail light in when the tail light goes out?
- 5:06Because, you know, that bulb, it's 10 bucks.
- 5:11Well, but if I take the 10 bucks out of the account now, do I
- 5:14even have the money to keep the lights on?
- 5:16But if I don't fix the tail light, do I get a ticket?
- 5:18And that ticket could be a couple of 100 bucks.
- 5:20And you know that then it's just compounding, right?
- 5:23See, there are people who live right there, right on the edge
- 5:28of how do I decide today which of the priorities of bills in my
- 5:33life am I going to take care of because I can't based on cash
- 5:36flow, take care of all of them. Then there are people who live
- 5:40on the other side of that problem.
- 5:42I listen to a a gentleman kind of share a little insight.
- 5:46I guess it was an insight. Maybe it was AI could have been
- 5:48completely made-up. Here's what he said.
- 5:51He said a billionaire will fly an empty jet from one continent
- 5:54to another because an empty jet has no manifest.
- 5:58No people, no manifest, no manifest, no checkpoints, no
- 6:02customs, no tariffs, no taxes. So if you buy a $500,000 watch
- 6:10on a foreign continent, it's actually cheaper to put it on an
- 6:15empty jet and fly at home than it is to wear at home and have
- 6:19to pay customs and answer all the questions on it and then pay
- 6:22duty on it and then pay income taxes on it when you get at
- 6:24home. You can actually move it from
- 6:26one place to another and avoid all that.
- 6:29If you have the option of hiring an empty jet, well, that's one
- 6:36way to look at a problem. If I want to avoid the taxes,
- 6:39there are strategies. There are strategies for where
- 6:41to put your money in investments so that you don't have to pay as
- 6:45much in taxes as was said by a presidential candidate to
- 6:51another presidential candidate during a debate.
- 6:53I don't cheat on my taxes. I just use every loophole that's
- 6:58made available to me, just like your donors do.
- 7:02And if you didn't like it, you spent years in Congress, you
- 7:06could have changed it, but you didn't.
- 7:09Well, that's a pretty indicative statement.
- 7:13But there's a, there's a truth here that I need you to
- 7:16understand. There's something to be said for
- 7:20the number of commas in your bank account, the amount of
- 7:23money that you have on hand and the amount of money you have
- 7:26access to, whether that's the ability to get a loan or that's
- 7:29ability to go to the table and say, hey, I need some investors
- 7:33in this project, in this concept, in this cause.
- 7:36Tony Robbins has raised billions, if not trillions of
- 7:39dollars over the course of his lifetime.
- 7:41Some through investments, some through the multiple companies
- 7:43that he owns, some through the influence that he has.
- 7:46Because there are people with big money who look at the good
- 7:49that Tony does in the world and they're like, I just want to put
- 7:52money into what you're doing. It's it's a feel good return on
- 7:56investment. I'm not looking to get a
- 7:57paycheck back. I just know that what you're
- 8:00going to do with this is worthwhile.
- 8:01There's several foundations and things of that nature and people
- 8:04with big money, they want to participate in those things.
- 8:07People with big money, they want to buy things that have a return
- 8:11on investment. As I started in my opening, I
- 8:14heard from a billionaire, if my money is not making babies, it's
- 8:21just being wasted. See, this is not about just the
- 8:25zeros at the end of your bank account.
- 8:26It's not about the number of commas in your bank account.
- 8:29It's about the relationship you have to money.
- 8:34Let me say that another way. It's about the relationship you
- 8:37have to the concept of wealth. Now, there are people who will
- 8:42say that the love of money is the root of all evil.
- 8:46That's the actual phrase. But it's not that money is evil.
- 8:53Money is a tool, kind of like leadership.
- 8:56When I was in the Congo, I remember being confronted with
- 8:59the idea of how do I express to these parliament leaders who
- 9:04predominantly speak French, that leadership is influenced,
- 9:08nothing more and nothing less. I walked to the front of the
- 9:10room with a knife and a spoon and a fork in my hand, and I
- 9:12said, which one is dangerous? My translator repeated my my
- 9:16question. Of course, they all pointed to
- 9:19the knife. So I took the knife and I threw
- 9:20it on the ground and they all looked at me and they looked at
- 9:23the knife and they looked at me and they looked at the knife and
- 9:26the knife did nothing. I said, well obviously it's not
- 9:29that one. So which of these two, the spoon
- 9:31or the fork is dangerous? Same response.
- 9:34Well, it must be the fork if it's not the knife.
- 9:37So I threw it on the ground next to the knife and guess what?
- 9:39It did absolutely nothing. And so then I looked at them and
- 9:45I said, with this spoon, I could feed you breakfast or gouge your
- 9:50eyeballs out. And yet the spoon, and I threw
- 9:55it on the ground is no more harmless than the knife of the
- 9:57fork. It's not about the tool.
- 9:59It's about who wields that tool. There are billionaires all over
- 10:05the world. There are billionaires who have
- 10:08great hearts, who do great things in the ways of medicine
- 10:12and help feeding the homeless, building shelters, providing
- 10:16medical care. I've met them.
- 10:19I've worked alongside them. Then there are billionaires who
- 10:22want to use their money to influence world politics, to
- 10:25change the landscape of society and culture, to change
- 10:29ideologies. There's one particular
- 10:31billionaire, I won't say his name, but you would probably
- 10:33know it if you know anything about geopolitics, who honestly
- 10:36said I get a lot of pleasure out of watching an economy collapse
- 10:42and knowing that I did it? Search the quote, you'll find
- 10:46out who I'm talking about. That's an exact quote from about
- 10:5030 years ago. But his work is still being
- 10:53replicated today. His money is not making babies
- 10:59in that fashion, but it's definitely birthing ideas and
- 11:02worldviews and changing economies, changing societies
- 11:07around the world. That's his agenda.
- 11:09That's what he wants to invest in.
- 11:12It's his money, it's his outcome.
- 11:15That's the result he wants. Who's to say?
- 11:20The question is, are you in the place where you have money to
- 11:23make options available to do things that you believe are
- 11:27important? Are you in the place where money
- 11:30has you? Little statement for you here.
- 11:36This is from Tony Robbins. Money master the game.
- 11:44So on. See what page number is that?
- 11:47Page 49 Beginning of a chapter on page 49, he says quote Let's
- 11:52face it, we're not about to earn our way to wealth.
- 11:58Huh. That's a mistake millions of
- 12:00Americans make. We think that if we work harder,
- 12:02smarter and longer, we'll achieve our financial dreams.
- 12:05But our paycheck alone, no matter how big, isn't the
- 12:09answer. Money master the game.
- 12:12This is 7 simple steps to financial freedom.
- 12:15And the main thing he's talking about is investments.
- 12:18How do you make your money? Make babies?
- 12:22This one. Success habits.
- 12:25Millionaire success habits. This is from Dean Graciosi, one
- 12:30of Tony Robbins. Many, many business partners.
- 12:33He says even if I could teach a group of people how to sell $20
- 12:37bills for 10 bucks, some of them would let what's between their
- 12:42ears stop them from succeeding. Even with something so simple,
- 12:48they could still talk themselves out of success and not even
- 12:51realize they're self sabotaging. Because so many times fear is
- 12:58the break to our momentum, slowing us down so much that
- 13:02eventually we come to a complete stop.
- 13:04Look, I grew up in the world where what we thought about
- 13:08money was the rich get rich, the poor go broke and it's the
- 13:12richest fault. Who wants to be rich?
- 13:14I self sabotage myself over and over again.
- 13:18When I worked in Fortune 50 America and I was knocking on
- 13:21the door of 6 figures as a regular paycheck, I found ways
- 13:25to cut myself off at the knees to prevent me from crossing that
- 13:28barrier because I knew my family, my household would think
- 13:31differently of me if I crossed that barrier, if I made it into
- 13:35that 6 figure mark. Those are rich people.
- 13:38That's a problem. Let me tell you something.
- 13:43Those are not the rich people causing the problem.
- 13:47There are some elitists. There are some multibillionaires
- 13:52bordering on trillionaires, the ones who kind of fight for that
- 13:55top five slot in the world on a regular basis that in my
- 13:58opinion, have world views and ideologies that are simply
- 14:01harmful. They have an agenda about world
- 14:06population and control through vaccines and other things like
- 14:11that. That ideas that I don't agree
- 14:14with, but they have the money. They get to make the rules.
- 14:17They change politics, they change medical policies, they
- 14:20change global inheritances through taxation or
- 14:24confiscation. However you want to say that.
- 14:28But see, the real truth is billionaire, millionaire,
- 14:34wealthy. These are terms we throw around
- 14:36as a tool of measurement. But what it's really not
- 14:41measuring strictly is income, revenue, cash flow.
- 14:49It's really not even measuring true wealth.
- 14:51It's measuring the results for the things that you've invested
- 14:54your money in and the return that you've got from it.
- 14:57Some people inherit great wealth.
- 15:00Some people inherit seed money and they have skill sets that
- 15:04make it great wealth. And some people inherit what I
- 15:08believe to be what I'm discovering to be even more
- 15:11important. And that is the mindset that
- 15:15says wealth is neither my objective nor my obstacle.
- 15:22I'm not put on this planet just to gain a lot of money.
- 15:24I'm not put on this planet to fight against a lot of money.
- 15:28Money, like a knife, a spoon, a fork is just a tool and how you
- 15:34deploy that tool, whether you feel like it's only here to pay
- 15:37the bills, to choose between the electric bill, the water bill,
- 15:40the the cell phone bill, and the tail light in my car.
- 15:43If that's the only purpose of money, then it's just stress.
- 15:46It's just something else to worry about.
- 15:48It's a tool that keeps me in a bad health state because I spend
- 15:52more time worrying about it. If, on the other hand, money is
- 15:55a tool to build wealth, to be able to give things away, to do
- 15:59good for others, then again, it's just a tool.
- 16:02But if my attitude about money isn't right, if I don't have a
- 16:08good, healthy relationship to what wealth is capable of, then
- 16:13wealth is going to run for me. It will flee from you.
- 16:16There are other great books. I mean, these are just a few
- 16:19Devon Franklin success commandments.
- 16:23Change your words, change your life.
- 16:27The 10X rule. There's some really simple
- 16:29principles in here. There's another one that I just
- 16:31recently got about scaling that says it's easier to 10X your
- 16:34life than it is to 2X. How is that possible?
- 16:38It's about mindset. It's about how you look at
- 16:41money. It's about how you look at the
- 16:43people around you, the ones who have money and the ones who
- 16:45don't. Should you pity the ones who
- 16:48don't or invest in them? That's a choice you're going to
- 16:51have to make. But you got to change your
- 16:52mindset about money. How about this one?
- 16:54The 9 figure mindset, 9 figures. Goodness, I just got past the
- 16:58six. What about 7:00 and 8:00?
- 17:01I got to go straight to 9 figure mindset.
- 17:03Yeah. Because if you don't have the
- 17:04mindset to deal with wealth, wealth will avoid you.
- 17:11That sounds really weird, doesn't it?
- 17:12Yeah, but that's not the only book that makes that claim.
- 17:15I'm going to show you another one in a minute.
- 17:17But money, greed and God, did you know that even in religion,
- 17:21there are people who have a horrible mindset about money?
- 17:26It's not about the amount of money they have in the bank.
- 17:28It's about the kind of mind they have about the money.
- 17:32That's a big problem. Think big, act bigger.
- 17:36This guy has moved to billions of dollars, sold over 250
- 17:40companies, I believe, moved more than $25 billion in assets.
- 17:46If you think small, you never take the risk.
- 17:49If you think small and you never take a risk, guess what?
- 17:52Your money can't do? It can't reproduce itself.
- 17:54How about this one, the step to step guide to lead children to
- 17:57financial freedom? What if there was a way to teach
- 18:01your kids to become millionaires?
- 18:03It's about the mindset. It's about what do you think
- 18:06about money? But let me tell you the biggest
- 18:09challenge with all of that. It's not just what you think
- 18:12about money, it's also how often.
- 18:20It's not just what you think about money, it's also how often
- 18:25see those things that you focus on, you tend to get more of.
- 18:30And if you think about money as a problem, you're going to have
- 18:35more problems. If you think about money as an
- 18:38answer, you might not necessarily have an answer, but
- 18:43you're definitely going to find more problems along the way
- 18:45because money isn't the solution.
- 18:48As my friend Bruce Carter says, money won't fix it.
- 18:51How do we know? Well, like he said, Dean
- 18:54Graziosi pointed out, if you could teach people to sell $20
- 18:57bills for 10 bucks, they would still have a problem in their
- 19:00mind because they just don't have a good relationship to
- 19:03wealth. You've got to fix that, but
- 19:07before you can do any of that, you've got to fix other key
- 19:09relationships in your life. I've been listening to and it's
- 19:13taking a while because the podcast is like almost 3 hours
- 19:17long. A neurophysiologist in an
- 19:21interview with Sean Ryan talking about all the ways that the
- 19:25brain is impacted by our lifestyles.
- 19:29And one of the things she points out is that one of the 14
- 19:32indicators of Alzheimer's and mild cognitive impairment is a
- 19:40lack of relationships. She said, you know, you, you see
- 19:44people early on in, in Alzheimer's and they'll sleep
- 19:47with their face toward the wall. They'll sit to eat with their
- 19:50face toward the wall. They'll turn their back on
- 19:52people that are around them and partially because they're
- 19:54beginning to lose their memory. And so their relationship
- 19:57becomes harder when they can't remember somebody's name or how
- 20:00they know them or where they know them from.
- 20:01And I, I get that. But she goes one step further
- 20:04and says. That's not only a marker of the
- 20:07beginning of the problem, it's also an exacerbation of the
- 20:13problem. It's kind of like when you say,
- 20:16well, I injured my knee, therefore I'm not going to run
- 20:17this week or walk this week, or I'm not going to the gym because
- 20:20my knee hurts. And so not going to the gym
- 20:23allows the knee maybe to recover a little bit, but it also allows
- 20:26the other muscles in the other joints to begin to atrophy,
- 20:31according to this neuroscientist.
- 20:32She says understand that the nerves and the brain cells and
- 20:40the blood vessels and capillaries inside the brain
- 20:43that are responsible for cognitive thought rely on you to
- 20:50use them in order to stay healthy.
- 20:54Meaning when you stop using that part of your brain that's
- 20:58necessary for relationships, that part of your brain begins
- 21:01to go to sleep and eventually it atrophies just like a limb if
- 21:06you stayed in your chair too long.
- 21:09Imagine mental bed sores. Emotional relational bed sores.
- 21:16A place where this irritation becomes infected and eventually
- 21:22just stops working. Blood flow doesn't go there.
- 21:24Imagine having gangrene of your relationships.
- 21:27It's kind of what she's talking about.
- 21:31That's my own terminology, not hers.
- 21:34But the idea that when you stop using it, you start losing it.
- 21:38Look, if your relationship to money is a mess, if your
- 21:41relationship to people is a mess, if your relationship to
- 21:45you is a mess, the stories in your life will prove that out.
- 21:54You will say and do and behave in ways that indicate this is a
- 21:59problem, and the problem will expand and exacerbate.
- 22:04And there are things in your life that you have to stop doing
- 22:08now and start doing differently. Being a billionaire isn't going
- 22:12to solve your problems. If you woke up tomorrow, you won
- 22:14the lottery, and you had four extra commas in your bank
- 22:17account. Money won't fix it until you
- 22:21change your mind about money, about the tools, about the
- 22:24resources, about the relationships around you that
- 22:26matter. I remember talking to a guy in
- 22:31Atlanta, GA. My wife and I were there to
- 22:32speak for a marriage conference. He asked me for a few bucks and
- 22:38I said if I give you a dollar, what are you going to do with
- 22:39it? He said probably go buy a Taco
- 22:43or a or a hamburger. I said, if I gave you 5, what
- 22:47would you do then he said I'd probably buy 5 hamburgers
- 22:49because there are people at our homeless camp that haven't eaten
- 22:51in a couple of days. And I said, if I gave you 20, he
- 22:54said I would definitely buy 20 burgers and take them all back
- 22:56to the camp because there are a lot of people who could use a
- 22:59good meal. And I said, if I gave you a
- 23:03handful of seeds, what would you do with them?
- 23:07He goes, well, I love to eat pumpkin seeds or, or even, you
- 23:11know, sunflower seeds. I, I love to eat seeds.
- 23:14I said if you planted those seeds and waited, you'd think
- 23:21you'd have a different result than if you eat the seed.
- 23:25I hope you see that metaphor as clearly as it struck me when
- 23:29those words came out of my mouth.
- 23:30How often do we, from a financial standpoint, from an
- 23:33emotional and relational standpoint, how often do we eat
- 23:36the seeds? We don't plant them.
- 23:37We don't wait for the harvest. We don't wait for the six seeds
- 23:40in that apple to become a tree that produces 50 apples or 5000
- 23:43apples over its lifetime. We eat the seeds and then wonder
- 23:47why we're still hungry. Sometimes the hardest thing
- 23:51about money is you've got to step back and go.
- 23:53I'm not going to spend it. I'm going to wait and invest it.
- 23:56I'm going to plant it and let it bear fruit.
- 23:58I'm going to let it do something else.
- 24:00And in our relationships, it's the same problem.
- 24:02If you have starving relationships, if your business
- 24:07relationships, your personal relationships look like your
- 24:10bank account, there's a reason because you've got to be a
- 24:16better person. You've got to become someone
- 24:19different to take your life to the next level.
- 24:23And I'm going to say this as an absolute truth.
- 24:25It doesn't matter if you've got 1-2 or 15 commas in your bank
- 24:29account right now, if you're not the kind of person people want
- 24:32to stay around, that money will flee from you.
- 24:39Just look it up. Maybe you're leadership Bible
- 24:43isn't as well worn his mind. This one's had a rough life.
- 24:47The law of intuition from John Maxwell's leadership Bible, he
- 24:54says. Do you ever feel as though you
- 24:55need a therapist? Then Psalm 37 is for you.
- 24:59David writes as a counselor, providing wise steps to take as
- 25:04you face crisis decisions. Whenever you feel the pressure
- 25:08of competition in the market than compulsion to perform or to
- 25:12compare your lot with other leaders, pause and remember
- 25:17these words. David brings eternal perspective
- 25:20and long term vision that prevents mistakes and short term
- 25:24decisions. Trust in the Lord and do good.
- 25:27Do what's right and despite do what's right despite what others
- 25:31do. Cultivate faithfulness and don't
- 25:34move too quickly. Don't rush anything.
- 25:36Prioritize God and His values. He will reward and satisfy you
- 25:39in the end. Commit your plans to Him and
- 25:41trust Him. The results are in His hands.
- 25:44Be quiet and patient. Perspective comes when we grow
- 25:48still and think. Don't fret or compare.
- 25:50Such anxiety gives bad motivation.
- 25:56Refuse to get angry at your competition.
- 25:58Anger does not bring the results you desire.
- 26:01Put your hope in the Lord. Ultimately, He will guide you
- 26:04and use your decision. Listen, there are a whole lot of
- 26:09people out there who feel like if I can just earn the next
- 26:12paycheck, if I can find a way to hustle a little more, if I can
- 26:16put in a little more effort, do a little more something.
- 26:18The doing is not the end game. The doing is not the solution to
- 26:23the problem. More hustle, more manipulation,
- 26:26more sales closes. Eventually those things build
- 26:30your business, but they won't build your business until you
- 26:32build you. Ask me how I know if you want to
- 26:39reach that status of wealth in your life, however many commas
- 26:44that represents to you, is it 6? Is it 9?
- 26:47How many commas do you need in your life before you're going to
- 26:49be happy? The answer is it doesn't matter
- 26:51if there's one or there's 9, until you're happy with you,
- 26:58until you can look in the mirror and go, I kind of like you.
- 27:01Until the story that you tell in the mirror is consistent with
- 27:04the story you tell in the media, wealth is going to elude you.
- 27:11You've got to get that story right.
- 27:13You've got to be honest with yourself.
- 27:14You got to improve yourself. You got to build on those
- 27:16relationships and never stop doing it.
- 27:20Relationship building, it's like exercise.
- 27:24There's never a time to quit and it's always too late to start.

- 28:52I'm going to go over all of that for you in just a moment.
- 28:55I can also tell you that my clients who get the greatest
- 28:58success are the ones who apply the story power process to their
- 29:02business development to increase their impact, their influence,
- 29:05and their income. Now, the story power process
- 29:08includes story mining, story selection, story qualification,
- 29:13story crafting, connecting with your audience, and leading the
- 29:16narrative. And if you leave any one of
- 29:19those parts out, you're going to find that or you're just not as
- 29:21effective as you want to be. You're not going to grow your
- 29:24business to the same level. You're not going to lead with
- 29:26impact and influence like you hoped to.
- 29:29I can also tell you that the people who apply these things,
- 29:33well, they're not failing in their business.
- 29:35The reason a lot of people fail in their business is they
- 29:39continue to fail to connect the solution they offer with the
- 29:43problem that their clients have. The pain in the solution never
- 29:47come together, and a lot of that failure is because they're not
- 29:52clearly articulating how their solution solves someone else's
- 29:56problem. It comes down to a question,
- 29:59something like this. Who do you help and how?
- 30:03Yes, that's one of the first things we're going to discuss
- 30:06over the next six weeks of booster business with Story
- 30:09Power.
