- 0:00I thought I was doing what I was supposed to be doing in my 20s.
- 0:02There's so many things we need to do because once you have a
- 0:04kid, your life is over. I mean, that's what we're sold
- 0:06and that's what we bought. Think a lot of them just assume,
- 0:07oh, you have 6 kids, you're born and raised Catholic.
- 0:09Like you've just kind of always been on this trajectory.
- 0:11It's like, absolutely not. I was on contraceptives for a
- 0:13while. I think we've lost that
- 0:15generational knowledge of passing down to our daughters
- 0:17about what to expect. Like how do I not know this
- 0:19about my own body? There was so much I didn't know.
- 0:21From the experiences of the women that I know is that the
- 0:24women who use NFP are actually ultimately having a.
- 0:26What I learned was sex becomes sacred again with NF.
- 0:30So what I mean by that is when it's on birth control, we're
- 0:33having great oral sex and then we get married, but it's on
- 0:35birth. Control, marriage, sex and
- 0:37intimacy in this episode we get real and unfiltered.
- 0:41Welcome back to the Lila Roe show today I sit down with
- 0:43Chrissy Horton, an influencer and mom of 6, and we dive into
- 0:48the sometimes controversial topic of NFP natural family
- 0:52planning. Sex and intimacy with NFP in a
- 0:55marriage. We talk about Chrissy's own
- 0:58story of how her husband almost got a vasectomy and what changed
- 1:02their mind and so much more. In this day and age, the church
- 1:06is teaching on things like intimacy, sex, marriage,
- 1:09contraception. Family size can be difficult for
- 1:12a lot of people and I hope today's episode can help
- 1:15breakdown some of the misunderstandings and get real
- 1:18about the challenges with a path for hope and showing the beauty
- 1:21of what this is all about. Also, thank you so much to
- 1:24everyone who has been subscribing to the show.

- 1:44Chrissy Horton, welcome to the podcast.
- 1:45Thank you so much. I'm so honored to be.
- 1:47Here. Glad you're here.
- 1:48We were talking earlier about millennial girl stuff, yes,
- 1:52which I feel like doesn't get enough attention in the pot.
- 1:55So I was like the what are the Gen.
- 1:56Z ers up to which we do the hover on the show.
- 1:58But I'm a fan of yours and you're very fun, life giving
- 2:02content and I'm excited to talk to you today.
- 2:05Thanks for coming up from San Diego.
- 2:07Thanks for having me, I'm so honored to be here.
- 2:09I'm I was sure you were mistaken when you Are you sure you're
- 2:13getting the right content creator for?
- 2:15Sure. People need to hear this
- 2:17conversation and what you're going to share.
- 2:18So yes, 100%. So give people a quick
- 2:21background on you and your. Work.
- 2:25Sure. My name is Chrissy Horton.
- 2:27I'm a mom of six children. I am a content creator and I
- 2:33don't really know how I kind of stumbled upon this.
- 2:34I guess I started just sharing basic fashion finds.
- 2:39I have always liked fashion, but I know, I know.
- 2:42Yeah, a 30 year old millennial decides to start a fashion blog.
- 2:46Ground breaking, I know, but it started off as a way to actually
- 2:49share, to share fashion finds that suited where I was in
- 2:55motherhood. So for example, when I became a
- 2:57mom, I had a hard time finding things that were breastfeeding
- 2:59friendly that weren't necessarily like nursing
- 3:01designated clothing. So I started that way in content
- 3:04creation. And then it just started to
- 3:05evolve. As I had more kids, people
- 3:07became more curious about what life looked like.
- 3:09And I started providing more pregnancy education and then I
- 3:14started providing more motherhood education.
- 3:15And then it just turned into this very candid talk.
- 3:17It was just like from one mom to another.
- 3:19And on my Instagram, I started hosting ask me anythings every
- 3:24Monday. So we call it Mama Monday, ask
- 3:26me anything. And I've been doing that for a
- 3:27few years. And that's just where I get to
- 3:29talk to other moms, other moms to be or even young teenagers
- 3:33who want to be a mom. And I answer questions.
- 3:35And again, it's I'm not a professional doctor.
- 3:38I'm I'm nothing like that. It's just one mom to another.
- 3:41And that's basically what my content revolves around that
- 3:43vulnerable motherhood. And you know, I share different
- 3:46parts of my life things with my husband and that's kind of what
- 3:50it centers around. It's really motherhood and and
- 3:52the joy that comes from motherhood.
- 3:54I feel like I grew up in an age of social media where motherhood
- 3:58started off as being painted very picture perfect, like the
- 4:01Pinterest era, right where I just saw these beautiful homes
- 4:04and these beautiful perfect for together moms.
- 4:07And then when I became a mom, I was like, why isn't a reality?
- 4:11Check for us, right? We're like, oh.
- 4:13And so then I started kind of creating content, trying to show
- 4:16more of like the realities of it.
- 4:17And then came the pandemic. It's kind of when I really
- 4:20started making content. And that's when TikTok was
- 4:23really known as like a dancing app.
- 4:25But then all these people kind of started coming on and sharing
- 4:27just really random videos. And I started sharing some
- 4:31videos about motherhood. And I saw this big, very
- 4:34vulnerable side. I saw mom showing up in like
- 4:36messy buns and, you know, their pajamas, like, hey, I didn't get
- 4:39dressed for the day. And I loved how that wave kind
- 4:41of took off. And then as it evolved, it kind
- 4:43of got to the point where it was like there was a really negative
- 4:47spin on motherhood now. So we went from one extreme of
- 4:49perfection to another extreme of this is awful.
- 4:53And I was like, we got to find the balance in here, guys, like,
- 4:55because that's how life is. You know, life is never perfect
- 4:57and life is never just awful. Like you have your ups and
- 4:59downs. And so I really strive now when
- 5:01I make, I make vlogs where I show like kind of a day in the
- 5:04life of a mom of six kids. I really try to, I really try to
- 5:07show the, the beauty in the chaos, right.
- 5:10So the tantrum still exists. I, I don't show my children's
- 5:12tantrums, but just kind of showing that if you look for it,
- 5:16there's beauty in anything you do.
- 5:17And so I may be living what may be considered a mundane life,
- 5:20right? You know, wake up with the kids,
- 5:22same kind of routine every day. We homeschool, we do this, we
- 5:24go, we go to activities, we have dinner, we do bath and we do it
- 5:26all over again. But by showing off the vlogs
- 5:29that I do, I, I like to think I'm showing off the beauty in
- 5:32these everyday moments and what a blessing they really are.
- 5:34And it's, it's not perfect moments that make that make up
- 5:37your life. It's the everyday moments that
- 5:39you look back on. And so I really try to show that
- 5:41through my content on top of the educational stuff in answering
- 5:45questions for for other moms out there.
- 5:47I love it. It's so I love your content.
- 5:49It makes me laugh. It's also very like thought
- 5:52provoking in a good way, encouraging in a good way.
- 5:55I want to get into the topic of NFP here.
- 5:59And there was this reel that you did that went really viral.
- 6:02Well, there's a color, several of them, but this one is about
- 6:05that. Let me pull it up.
- 6:06I want to watch it with our audience here so they know we're
- 6:08talking about. Have I always been open to just
- 6:10giving God my womb is a big question I get given I'm
- 6:13pregnant with number six. I'm open about my Catholic
- 6:15faith. Absolutely not.
- 6:16No, this is a very new journey for me.
- 6:18I grew up as I guess you could say a Creole Catholic.
- 6:20Despite my mom's best efforts went to church, was a leader in
- 6:23my choir. Like looked really good on the
- 6:25outside, but I was not tatic eyes really well when I hit my
- 6:2720s. I love to.
- 6:28Go. OK, now I want you to tell me
- 6:30more about this, but the reason I'm showing the video here is
- 6:33because this elicited, and I know it elicits for you a lot of
- 6:38messages, feedback because you are out there and you're not out
- 6:41there being like, I'm a Catholic influencer, I'm a Christian
- 6:44influencer. You're out there just I'm a mom
- 6:45of 6. I live in California, we
- 6:48homeschool and this is our life. And then you incorporate
- 6:50elements of just your authentic faith that you're living.
- 6:52One of the most hot button things that you do though, is
- 6:55you talk about being open to life.
- 6:57So and, and then there was a video just recently that went
- 7:00Uber viral about #7 so we'll get to that in a minute.
- 7:05But first, give us your philosophy on even why you have
- 7:08six kids. Have you always been against
- 7:10contraception? What is your view on all of
- 7:13this? No, I've not always been against
- 7:15contraceptives. So I was actually on
- 7:16contraceptives for a long time. Like I said in the earlier clip,
- 7:20as you saw where I said I was born raised Catholic, but wasn't
- 7:24categorized very well. And I think a lot of Catholics
- 7:26can relate to this who were born in the Church, but not
- 7:28necessarily like very familiar with the Catholic's teaching.
- 7:30So I went to church, went to Mass, my husband and I.
- 7:34So how my husband and I met actually was in high school.
- 7:36He played the guitar and I sang for the youth mass.
- 7:39How sweet we met. So he's Catholic too, but kind
- 7:42of the same thing. Cradle Catholic, you know, we
- 7:44went to mass, went through the motions and not very familiar
- 7:47with the church's teaching. So we, I was very much, I don't
- 7:54know how you say it, but I lived a very, I lived a very typical
- 7:58American College experience. You know, I was, I was with my
- 8:02husband. So I, I don't know the
- 8:05politically correct term for this, but I did not, was not
- 8:07part of hookup culture, but I still love to go out.
- 8:09My husband and I would go out. I mean, we're talking bars like
- 8:11clubs. I love to dance and I, you know,
- 8:15I would, I would drink and stuff.
- 8:16And so I was very much like, I would still go to Mass and I'd
- 8:19sing and I, you know, all this, but you couldn't convince me at
- 8:22that time in my life that going out and just drinking with my
- 8:25friends and all this was not good for me.
- 8:28I guess I thought it was just like, you know, your typical
- 8:32experience. And when I say drinking, it was
- 8:35like, oh, just a drink here or there.
- 8:36Like, I mean, I would, I would, I would drink and get sloppy.
- 8:40And, you know, I which, OK, I mean, we all just go through.
- 8:44I basically try to paint a picture that I wasn't this
- 8:46perfect, you know, just because I was raised in the church and I
- 8:49was singing in the church choir. I wasn't living this like
- 8:51perfect church exactly that that could come off.
- 8:56Yeah, I was very much, I was a very, it's a coming of age time.
- 8:59You're learning different things.
- 9:01And so, so that's where this is coming from.
- 9:04So when people find out I have 6 kids, I think a lot of them just
- 9:06assume, oh, you have 6 kids, you're born and raised Catholic.
- 9:07Like you've just kind of always been on this trajectory.
- 9:09It's like, absolutely not. Well, most Catholics today,
- 9:12Chrissy, as we know that are raised Catholic are not
- 9:16practicing Catholic, right. So these like numbers of these,
- 9:19you know, 70 or 80 million Catholics, it's like how many of
- 9:21them are going to Mass every Sunday and how many of them even
- 9:24know the church's teachings on contraception, on marriage and
- 9:28are really trying to follow them?
- 9:29I mean, I think that's the other thing that a lot of people don't
- 9:32even understand at a deeper level what this all means.
- 9:35So that's why I think by the way, you just sharing so, so
- 9:38like authentically is a powerful inspiration to people who have
- 9:42maybe a deeper sense, like something's not right with my
- 9:44life or the way that the culture is going.
- 9:46But I don't really know what another path might look like. 7

- 10:53I would very much look to the world, I guess, for what was
- 10:55right and wrong, especially when you live in a social media
- 10:57world. We're getting fed things
- 10:58constantly right. And so I thought I was doing
- 11:01what I was supposed to be doing in my 20s.
- 11:03You know, I got my husband. I got married young, but I got
- 11:06married and I just was ready to marry that guy.
- 11:08I was very married guy, like so quick.
- 11:09But we thought, no, you can't, you can't have kids right away
- 11:13because we're told like, you need to, you need to travel and
- 11:16my husband needs to like finish his, like get where he wants to
- 11:18be in his career. And there's so many things we
- 11:19need to do because once you have a kid, your life is over.
- 11:22I mean, that's what we're sold. And, and so, and that's what we
- 11:25bought. And so I was on contraceptives.
- 11:28I was on contraceptives for a while and we did that.
- 11:32We travelled, went to brunch every Saturday.
- 11:36And you? Know just the whatever, you
- 11:38know, the hip spots it down. It sounds so old, but you know,
- 11:42that's what we did. And then basically the only
- 11:46reason I got off birth control was when I turned about 26, I
- 11:50just didn't feel like myself anymore.
- 11:52And something was going on with me.
- 11:54And I dug a little deeper and it seemed as if what could happen
- 11:58is as you get older, you know, I'm hitting my mid 20s at this
- 12:00point, your hormones are starting to change.
- 12:02And I'm not a doctor, so I don't know this for sure.
- 12:05But based on my research, it seemed like the birth control,
- 12:08the hormones, it just was affecting me differently.
- 12:11And so I never saw a professional about this.
- 12:12By the way, this was just based on my own research and what was
- 12:15going on in my body. So this is not medical advice by
- 12:18any means, but I was like, OK, maybe I need to just get off of
- 12:23this. You know, it's there's hormones
- 12:25involved and I was not feeling myself and I don't want to call
- 12:28it depression, but just it didn't seem like myself.
- 12:31So I just said, OK, I'm going to get off of this.
- 12:34And I was on it for so long that I thought there's no way I'm
- 12:36going to get pregnant like, and I got pregnant like like a month
- 12:39later after being off of it. So it wasn't even you're getting
- 12:42off of it because we're ready to start our family.
- 12:44It was more that I just don't feel good.
- 12:46We don't and we were not ready My husband was a software
- 12:48developer for like a safe company, right?
- 12:50Four O 1K health, health insurance, all that stuff.
- 12:53And then he, we were young and the, you know, he said, I want
- 12:57to do a startup. And this was during like, you
- 12:59know, 2013, like that whole tech startup culture.
- 13:02And he was going to move to San Francisco with his startup team
- 13:04and they were going to be gone for a few months.
- 13:06And I said, you know, that we're young, like now's the time to do
- 13:08it. Now's the time to take risks.
- 13:09And then I got pregnant. So we were not ready in in the
- 13:13sense, but we were ecstatic. I will say when I found out I
- 13:16was pregnant, I, I couldn't help but smile even though we weren't
- 13:20ready at all. Like, you know, I was a
- 13:22preschool teacher, like we're not going to live off my income.
- 13:24And then he's doing this start up and he's not even making
- 13:27money. So it it really did all get
- 13:30figured out like the Lord does provide truly.
- 13:32That was one of like the first part of my testimony.
- 13:35And so I get pregnant and I have him and and then I'm like, OK,
- 13:41we need a pause, whatever. But I was like, I'm not going
- 13:43back on birth control. I'm not doing that.
- 13:45So then I look into the IUD. So Sarah, I'm still not here
- 13:48mentally like on on being open to life, right?
- 13:51And I look into the IUD. And again, this is all based on
- 13:53my personal experience. I'm not giving medical advice,
- 13:55but I talked to my girlfriends who did have Iuds and it sounded
- 13:58like a very painful process. I have girlfriends who I'll
- 14:01never forget this. We were getting ready for like a
- 14:04like a party or something. My husband and I used to like
- 14:06host like dinner parties at her house when we were married
- 14:08because that's what you're supposed to do, right?
- 14:09You're supposed to host dinner parties and go to brunch and
- 14:11travel before you have kids. And so she came over early and I
- 14:16was getting ready in my bathroom and she just laid on the ground
- 14:18and was like, what's wrong with you?
- 14:19She's like, my IUD just hurts so bad.
- 14:21I was like, you should probably take that out then like you
- 14:24shouldn't be in this much pain. And so I just had seen these
- 14:27things first hand and I was like, well, I'm not, I'm not
- 14:28going to do that. And so you're not having an ID
- 14:32and you're not on birth control. I mean, there's only so many
- 14:35ways to prevent pregnancy. And so I end up getting up,
- 14:38getting pregnant baby #2 and I was terrified.
- 14:43I was like, my first baby's only eight months old.
- 14:46I'm a first time mom. And I thought, how could I love
- 14:50another baby as much as I love my first baby?
- 14:52There's no way. There's no way.
- 14:55And then my second baby came and it was just clear as day, like a
- 15:00mother's love is endless. It does not divide, it
- 15:02multiplies. And so that opened up my eyes.
- 15:04So it's just little building blocks to get to where I got
- 15:08there. So then I have baby #2 and we're
- 15:11two under 2. I'm in over my head.
- 15:12My husband's working a lot. I'm home alone with the other
- 15:15ones. And I'm like, well, we need a
- 15:17break. And we're again, I'm not doing
- 15:20again. I'm not even opposed to
- 15:23contraceptives. We're just using other formats
- 15:25that don't require hormones. And, and then I of course I get
- 15:30pregnant with baby #3 but that's our biggest age gap though a
- 15:32whop in 20-4 months. I think maybe it's a little bit
- 15:36more, but we have, I have baby #3 and we always wanted 4,
- 15:42though I should say that we were always open to four.
- 15:45So it's not as if we went in thinking like, oh, we don't want
- 15:48to have a big family. So we were always open to 4.
- 15:50But I will say when I had baby number one, that was the hardest
- 15:54transition for me, going from zero to 1 because it's a whole
- 15:56life change. It's a whole life.
- 15:57Change. Right.
- 15:58And I know people and I know 1 to 2 is really hard, especially
- 16:00when you got 2 under 2 or honestly any age gap.
- 16:03I know that's a difficult challenge and I'm not trying to
- 16:05say it's not. But zero to 1 was hard because
- 16:07that was the first time I was a mom and the sleep deprivation,
- 16:12Oh my gosh, I was not prepared for that.
- 16:15And you know, when I tried all the things, the sleep training,
- 16:18all this and it just I gave up on all of that.
- 16:21So just want. To be with you.
- 16:22Yeah, yeah. Be with you.
- 16:24Yeah. And and, and breastfeeding, it
- 16:26was just that was really hard. Breastfeeding was really, really
- 16:29hard and everything just hit me like a ton of bricks.
- 16:34And actually, you know what, one of my first, actually my very
- 16:38first viral video. No, it's my, I had, I did have
- 16:41one viral video, but it was just a fun video.
- 16:43My first viral video that was educational was me talking about
- 16:47everything I needed to heal during postpartum.
- 16:51That got 11 million views on TikTok.
- 16:54And in that video, I talked about the products I used that
- 16:58helped me heal. And I said if and if any, if
- 17:01you're interested in any of these products or you want the
- 17:02links to anything I specified head over to my Instagram.
- 17:04And that is how my following bill actually on Instagram was
- 17:07from that TikTok. So then I ended up posting that
- 17:10video on Instagram and that's how it started.
- 17:12So then I started making pregnancy education videos.
- 17:15But anyways, circling back postpartum kicked my butt and I
- 17:18was not prepared for it. I don't feel like it was
- 17:20something we were ever really taught.
- 17:21Like you're not. You're bleeding for like almost
- 17:246. Weeks you don't even know what
- 17:26happened a lot of the time or what to expect.
- 17:28I thought too, I was scared easily.
- 17:30Yeah, I've never had AC section. But then I, you know, obviously
- 17:33I have friends who have and I remember being like, wait, why
- 17:35do you bleed for six months or six weeks?
- 17:37Why do you bleed for six weeks? You had AC section, but it's
- 17:40like, oh, wait, no, you the placenta's out.
- 17:42Like you have a womb the size of a dinner plate, like, but it's
- 17:45just, if I didn't like, how do I not know this about my own body,
- 17:47you know? And so there was so much I
- 17:50didn't know and just how I mean, I don't want to be too TMI for
- 17:53your for your listeners. No topic is off limits.
- 17:57That's one of our life, just. Like, you know, if you, and
- 17:59here's the thing, here's reality of some of the childbirths, you
- 18:02won't. It's not, it's not a guarantee
- 18:04that you will tear. It all depends on how you birth.
- 18:06But I did tear and it was very difficult to just go to the
- 18:10bathroom. So there were all these products
- 18:12I had to use, like soy cream. My first, my first, Yeah.
- 18:15What was the degree if you want to share, I don't know if.
- 18:17You that bad? It wasn't that bad.
- 18:18It was a few stitches, but like it hurt.
- 18:20I've never experienced that before, so no, I know women who
- 18:23experience like way worse, but it wasn't that bad.
- 18:26But it was, you know, there was a lot of what's called like
- 18:28purple pushing where I was like forced to push.
- 18:30Like I just didn't know what I was doing, you know, and 1st
- 18:33Yeah. And so, but I was just like,
- 18:35everything hurt. Like I could like I was wearing
- 18:37this, you know, what felt like a diaper for so many weeks.
- 18:40I just was so unprepared and I didn't even know.
- 18:42And, you know, I kind of was like, why did my mom tell me
- 18:45this? But I remember because I feel
- 18:47like the generation before us, they, I feel like that's kind of
- 18:51where it started with the less kids, right?
- 18:53Like my parents only had two kids and my husband's parents
- 18:56only had two kids. And I remember going to high
- 18:58school and it would be really rare to find people who had more
- 19:01than like 2 or like two siblings honestly.
- 19:03That's a good point. That's like the so it's like the
- 19:05post sexual revolution generation that thinks that it's
- 19:09actually good for the environment and everyone.
- 19:11I get a. Lot of hate on what I do to the
- 19:13environment. OK, OK.
- 19:15We. Can get to that.
- 19:16We'll get to that. But that's a very interesting
- 19:18point that it is a generational kind of trend how many kids to
- 19:22have. And I think when you get to the
- 19:23millennial generation, our generation, it's like there's a
- 19:25little bit more of a space for people that have more children.
- 19:29Like it's a thing to have more children for some like niche
- 19:32group, but there's still this overwhelming one or two, one and
- 19:36done, 2 and done. And when you go to the hospital,
- 19:38like after every birth I've had, I've been asked about
- 19:41contraception, I've been asked about are you done?
- 19:44And literally everywhere I go, you know, almost every time I
- 19:49have a, a sweet interaction with a stranger.
- 19:51Not, not every time, but many times they'll say, you know, and
- 19:55this is obviously, too, if they don't really know who I am,
- 19:58they'll say, how many you know, are you done?
- 20:00You know, are you done? Yeah.
- 20:01And I think that's just a but usually it's a boomer generation
- 20:05asking that which is. Interesting, I get asked by
- 20:07everyone. Are you very done?
- 20:08But but you're right. Yeah, it.
- 20:09Is, and the reason why I bring that up is because it had just
- 20:13been so long since my mom has experienced any of this, right?
- 20:15And so my mom's wonderful, by the way, she's like always by my
- 20:18side and I love her so much. And but I'm just as speaking
- 20:23more generally, as a more generally, not specific to my
- 20:26situation or my mother, but speaking generally that I think
- 20:30that we lose a little bit of the education and how to pass that
- 20:34knowledge down to our daughters. Because if that if the last kid
- 20:39you had was when you were 25, because they also had their kids
- 20:42younger too, right? So if you had your last time you
- 20:44had a kid was at 25 and now and now we're having kids older,
- 20:48right? So now it's been how many years
- 20:49since you had a baby? Like you probably just don't
- 20:51remember a lot of this stuff, you know?
- 20:52And so I think we've lost that generational knowledge of
- 20:56passing down to our daughters about what to expect.
- 21:00So I was just hit like a ton of Brixen postpartum, you know,
- 21:03after my first, I was kind of like, can we be 1 and done like
- 21:06this? I have 6 now.
- 21:08And this is something I said. I said can we be 1 and done?
- 21:10And my husband's like, is that really what you want?
- 21:12As of right now, yes. Well, the worst time to ask a
- 21:15woman how many kids she wants for not all women, but some is
- 21:18right after they deliver and they're in the dregs of
- 21:20postpartum. And I really do encourage women
- 21:23to not make permanent choices during that time, you know,
- 21:27because I know it's hard. I've, I've been there.
- 21:30I've been there. And to see you're not going to
- 21:32see the light at the end. And I think it's so a big thing
- 21:34I tell my a big thing I tell my audience as they go, it's all a
- 21:37season. And I wasn't able to have that
- 21:39perspective as a first time mom. You think this is your new
- 21:41normal. You think this is everything,
- 21:43but it really is all a season. And now that I've been through
- 21:47it, I think that's another reason why I'm very open to life
- 21:50is because I'm like, OK, like all these these newborn
- 21:52trenches, these postpartum trenches, like it's all a
- 21:55season. And also their sacrifices and
- 21:57sacrifices, they're not bad sacrifices is giving something
- 22:02up of comfort now for something so much greater in the future.
- 22:05So yeah, like, pregnancy is hard.
- 22:07Like people just assume I'm really easy pregnancies because
- 22:09I just keep and I'm like, no, like, I mean, I know there's
- 22:11people who have much worse. I don't have complicated
- 22:13pregnancies, you know, thankfully.
- 22:15But they're not, they're not easy on me.
- 22:17I have massive babies talking like my last one was almost 11
- 22:20lbs. What?
- 22:21Yeah. What?
- 22:22And I don't no gestational diabetes.
- 22:23Everyone always ask that and. Wait, right, that full term?
- 22:26Probably. Full term, yeah, like 42 weeks.
- 22:28OK, I'm really late. Wow, a boy or a girl?
- 22:31She was a girl, she was. A girl but my.
- 22:33First my first 10 pounder was a girl an. 11 LB baby.
- 22:36Almost she was like 1013. Wow.
- 22:37Or. Not congratulations.
- 22:41It was my best birth too. It was my most pain free birth.
- 22:44I mean, I did have an epidural did.
- 22:45You have an epidural? Yeah, OK.
- 22:47But I've also. We're very real here.
- 22:50I have I've had number drill for all the kids I've tried.
- 22:53I try so hard to go without and then I hit a point where I'm.
- 22:56The competitions that we get our the mindset competitions we get
- 23:00into ourselves as women's like, can I do it without the
- 23:02epidural? And I think that it's very
- 23:04beautiful to go without the epidural if you want that.
- 23:07And I if you can, I was no epidural for my first and then
- 23:09the second two we did epidural. It was all great.
- 23:11Yeah. But I mean, yeah, highly
- 23:13recommend whatever you wanna do for you.
- 23:14I think that's amazing, especially if you have the right
- 23:16coaching and stuff. It's totally doable.
- 23:18But I also I'm just, it's not for me.
- 23:23I think everyone is entitled to their own birth experience, but
- 23:26I have. But I've had epidurals not work.

- 24:25When was the aha moment for you in terms of it's not just about
- 24:29oh, I happened to keep having babies and it was more like, oh,
- 24:32I'm going to we're going to like intentionally shift the mindset
- 24:34instead of this is a struggle. This is a surprise.
- 24:37It's like, well, yes, it's a struggle because like, you know,
- 24:40being a mother, there's so much struggle sounds like such a
- 24:43negative word, but there are challenges.
- 24:45You know, there are sacrifices is the word that you used
- 24:48beautifully earlier, like for sure, but it was instead this is
- 24:51actually who we are and how we feel called to be by God.
- 24:55Yes, OK, yes. So I wanted to go over actually,
- 24:58yeah, all these struggles, but they were all like the building
- 25:00blocks into how I got here, essentially.
- 25:02So I, I think I want to paint a picture that I never was just
- 25:06this, Oh yeah, I'm going to have a lot of kids and I'm going to
- 25:09be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen like I was.
- 25:12That was never my vibe. Actually, you know, even back
- 25:15like in my college days, I, I have a, a joke I say on my, on
- 25:17some of my, on some of my reels when I talk about our story is
- 25:20like, if you were to have told 23 year old Chrissy that one day
- 25:23she would grow up to have six kids and want to have a mini
- 25:26farm, I would have thrown my Cosmopolitan in your face.
- 25:28Like that was just not my vibe. So I want to share these things
- 25:32because it's like, I have been there as a mom and I have been
- 25:34through those struggles. And I was that mom who was like,
- 25:37oh, we're done, We're done. You know, so how so?
- 25:40So what shifted is the big thing.
- 25:42So I'd get over the hump and I was like, OK, four.
- 25:46Like we're still on plan to have four.
- 25:47I get pregnant with baby #4 and my husband is set to have a
- 25:51vasectomy and it's those. Are so popular, by the way.
- 25:55Oh, there's vasectomy parties. Like, yeah, I know.
- 25:58They're very. Popular people, people of our
- 26:00values, too, Like they're like, Oh yeah, well, of course that's
- 26:02the responsible thing. And it's, it's something we're
- 26:04told it kind of goes back to the environmentalist stuff too as
- 26:06well. Like you're doing the
- 26:07responsible thing is what we're kind of told as well.
- 26:09And like, and I understand too, the hardships that come with,
- 26:12you know, I have AI have a lot of support and I know not
- 26:15everyone does. And so that whenever I talk
- 26:16about my, my journey and how I got here, I like to be very
- 26:19clear that this is my journey and I share it, You know, if it,
- 26:23if it inspires you, that's wonderful.
- 26:25But in, in no way am I trying to tell anyone else how to live.
- 26:27But I, I want to share my story and it is mine though.
- 26:30And it's, I'm not trying to push anything on anyone else by any
- 26:33means, But I, I never want to come off as, you know,
- 26:36judgmental, you know, I have, I have friends who, who have
- 26:39vasectomies and stuff and I never, you know, I don't think
- 26:42of them any differently, you know what I mean?
- 26:43So. Well, of course, and I think I
- 26:45think the thing to note here that you're saying is that with
- 26:48vasectomies, it is something that is recommended.
- 26:51People are thinking this is the this is actually the responsible
- 26:54thing to do because then my wife doesn't have to go on birth
- 26:56control. So that's seen as this good
- 26:58thing. So anyways, I'm.
- 26:59Curious. It is.
- 27:00It's very much part of our culture really.
- 27:02It really is part of our culture.
- 27:04And so my husband was set, he was going to go get that
- 27:06vasectomy after baby number 4 was born and I got pregnant baby
- 27:10#4 you know, during the pandemic, surprise, like how
- 27:12many pandemic babies are there? And so, you know, it was a, it
- 27:18was a scary time. And my mom encouraged me to
- 27:22check out a new parish. So during the pandemic, that is
- 27:25kind of when Tim and I, that Tim is my husband, we stopped doing
- 27:29the choir because everything got shut down, right?
- 27:31They're like, no singing, right? Because we're in, we're in
- 27:33Southern California. Like we should make that
- 27:35probably clear. We're in California where there
- 27:36was a lot of rules during that time, right?
- 27:39And so they, the big thing was like, no singing.
- 27:42And so I was like, OK, well, maybe that's our cue.
- 27:44Like we have, we have three kids.
- 27:45I'm pregnant with baby number four.
- 27:46It was getting really hard because I had to pick out all
- 27:47the music too, and, you know, make sure it was liturgically
- 27:49correct and like, does it go with the readings?
- 27:51And, you know, and so there was a lot that went into it.
- 27:53So I was like, I think we're done.
- 27:54I think we've served our time doing this choir.
- 27:56I think that chapter is closed. So once that was off the table,
- 27:59my mom encouraged me to check out a new parish and they
- 28:03actually had a homeschool ministry and I already decided I
- 28:06wanted to homeschool at that point.
- 28:07I think the pandemic really solidified that for me because
- 28:10my kids education didn't have to change.
- 28:12Granted they were very young. I, I mean, I think my youngest
- 28:14was, he was very young. I think he was like in
- 28:17kindergarten, maybe so, but that kind of solidified my choice to
- 28:20homeschool. She's like, oh, you should check
- 28:21out this new parish. So we roll up to the parish and
- 28:23there's just sprinter vans galore.
- 28:26And I'm like, what? What's up with all the sprinter
- 28:28vans? Because despite being raised
- 28:29Catholic, I maybe knew one family that had maybe like 8
- 28:33kids. Other than that, everyone had
- 28:35about two or three. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:38And so I was, I had so many preconceived notions about big
- 28:42families. I, I thought it was selfish to
- 28:45have a lot of kids. Like, oh, you just must really
- 28:47like the baby stage. Like I mean, just the comments I
- 28:51get are is what I thought so maybe it's my way of being
- 28:54humble, but this was every comment I get that's negative
- 28:57was probably a thought I had in my younger years about big
- 29:00families and what. Are some more examples of those
- 29:03thoughts? You have babies just because you
- 29:06want babies. You just like the babies.
- 29:07You're selfish. What's another one?
- 29:10I don't care about the Earth. That's a big one I get.
- 29:13You're just trying the other. That one's that one's
- 29:15interesting though, too, because big families, I I need to pull
- 29:21up the the statistics on this, but they actually don't use as
- 29:24many resources because one, we probably travel less.
- 29:26We're not we're not yeah, we're not hopping on planes often,
- 29:29right. We're not door dashing often.
- 29:33There's there's a lot to it, a lot of hand me down clothes, a
- 29:35lot of, you know, reusing. There's, there's just so many,
- 29:37so many things with that. I'm not prepared for that
- 29:40argument. I don't have enough of the the
- 29:41data to but that is a video I think I will make eventually.
- 29:45I love that concept. But yeah, the environmental, the
- 29:49selfishness. Did you ever?
- 29:51Get oh, you can't care for the first child because you have too
- 29:54many other. Children, I actually just made a
- 29:55video on this. It's a it's a YouTube video.
- 29:58It's a long form YouTube video, but I made a video on how it is
- 30:01possible to give each kid your attention.
- 30:03And I think I don't know if you want to keep going on the
- 30:06journey or if you want to just kind of circle back to some of
- 30:08this stuff. But if we're talking about the
- 30:09attention, what I've noticed when it comes to people saying
- 30:14like you, there's no way you can give those kids attention.
- 30:18They say, yes, a mother's love is endless, but her time is not.
- 30:22And I totally understand that. But what I've noticed is people
- 30:25are saying you can't give kids enough attention, but they're
- 30:28looking at through the lens of their life with two kids.
- 30:30So for example, if I just had my two older boys, they probably
- 30:34both be in travel sports, right? And we would be busy.
- 30:37We would be going to tournaments at 7:00 AM on a Saturday.
- 30:40We would be going driving 40 minutes away to this next
- 30:42tournament. And we they would both be in it,
- 30:44right? So we'd be having different
- 30:45schedules. I might even be working more,
- 30:48right? And then my husband, who knows,
- 30:50he might be having it because because of all the kids we've
- 30:52had, we've shifted careers and stuff, right?
- 30:54But if we just had the two, our careers probably would have
- 30:57stayed more. I didn't have one.
- 30:59But if I was, you know, doing social, let's say I was doing
- 31:02social media back then, right? I probably would have dedicated
- 31:05more time to that because I would have had less kids and
- 31:07like more time, right? And so when you look at having a
- 31:11lot of kids through the lens of your life of like, let's say you
- 31:14have two, that's not the life we're living though.
- 31:17Like I have, my kids are definitely in recreational
- 31:19sports, they're in club sports, but no, I don't have them in
- 31:21travel sports. So it's all local.
- 31:24It's, you know, we drive a few minutes down the street to go
- 31:26where they need to go now. Now, if my kids show some great
- 31:28promise like they're the next big athlete, OK, we'll cross
- 31:32that bridge when it comes. I'm not going to hold them back
- 31:33from their dreams. But as of right now, my oldest
- 31:35is 9. So I think we have some time.
- 31:37So, so we don't have that that same demanding schedule one we
- 31:42homeschool and I think that gives a lot of time back that I
- 31:45don't think it does give a lot of time back.
- 31:48So I'm with my kids all day and when I homeschool, it's all
- 31:50one-on-one. So I sit down with with an older
- 31:52one and we do it and we move, we move around.
- 31:56And so when you look at big families through the lens of
- 31:59having your size family, of course it's going to seem like
- 32:02they can't give them enough attention, but their lifestyle
- 32:04is probably vastly different than yours.
- 32:06So that's that's. Such a good point.
- 32:07And I do want to we'll get into that more too.
- 32:11And I know I keep like, you know, there's so many.
- 32:14Directions. There's so many directions.
- 32:15Here, which is beautiful. So so you were getting, so you
- 32:19get to this church, you're seeing the sprinter bands,
- 32:21you're thinking of all the different things that moms, the
- 32:25things that you thought about moms that had all of these
- 32:28children and then. OK, so then I meet them right?
- 32:31And they're amazing. They're like the most amazing
- 32:33woman I've ever met in my life and I'm everything I thought was
- 32:38just kind of proven wrong to me in my face.
- 32:41And it proved to me too. I actually don't know.
- 32:44I have all these judgments and preconceived notions, but have I
- 32:47ever really been around a big family?
- 32:49No. And then, you know, I'll going
- 32:51back to my comments, a lot of people say, well, I came from 7
- 32:54kids and it was the worst experience.
- 32:56I get that one a lot too, right? Like, I'm really sorry for that
- 32:59for you. And I'm not trying to invalidate
- 33:00your experience whatsoever, but I know kids who come from 2 two
- 33:04siblings and they've had a rough life too.
- 33:07So I, I, oh the big one parent fine that your older ones are
- 33:13going to parent fie your kids because there's too many of
- 33:16them. How can you take care of them?
- 33:17So you're going to put that responsibility on your older
- 33:19kids. That's the biggest assumption I
- 33:21get, which is absolutely not true.
- 33:22My oldest has never even changed a diaper, which I don't even
- 33:24know if that's a good thing. I really don't because because
- 33:27here's the thing, a big thing I like to preach to just over
- 33:29talking about big families is we want to teach our kids to be
- 33:33valuable contributing members to society.
- 33:36And that starts in the home. And we are becoming increasingly
- 33:41more selfish as a culture. And so you can teach your
- 33:45children ways to participate in the home and that we all live
- 33:47here in ways that we support one another without them being
- 33:50without them being parents, Right.
- 33:52And so I'll see something like if my child, one of my older
- 33:55ones is holding the baby and it happens to get caught on camera,
- 33:58people like look at the older one raising that baby.
- 34:00And I'm like, no, they just they truly love their siblings.
- 34:03Another thing, my kids love their siblings.
- 34:05Like they love each other. They fight, don't get me wrong,
- 34:07but they really enjoy one another.
- 34:09And they really, the babies they really enjoy.
- 34:12I mean, they just can't get enough of these babies.
- 34:14Like when when I bring home a baby, it's like everyone's,
- 34:18everyone's, yeah, everyone wants to hold the baby.
- 34:19Everyone's everything. And like, they're always
- 34:21fighting over who can hold the baby, you know?
- 34:23And so they truly love their younger siblings.
- 34:28And so I don't know, I see the way they bond and stuff and I'm
- 34:32just like have a hard time believing like I'm I'm stealing
- 34:36anything from them when I see how how they're living the.
- 34:39One thing would be stealing is if you said no to that sibling
- 34:42that they could have had. Yeah, think about it that way, I
- 34:45mean. They were their siblings.
- 34:47Yeah. I'm like, which one should I
- 34:48give back, guys? Like, what do you want me to do?

- 36:02But yeah, we want to teach them to be contributing my society.
- 36:04And that really starts that really starts in the home.
- 36:06And so, yeah, I, I'm going to have my children help
- 36:09definitely. They need to know, they need to
- 36:11learn how to be helpful. And this is going to prepare
- 36:14them to be great spouses one day and to be involved in their
- 36:17children's life. But it doesn't replace
- 36:19parenting. It's not as if they're the ones
- 36:21getting up in the middle of the night with the baby.
- 36:22They're not the ones who are responsible for making sure the
- 36:25younger ones are fed. Now that's parent find where the
- 36:27older one is making sure all the kids are fed, the one getting up
- 36:30in the middle of the night with all the kids.
- 36:31Like that's I can see that. But that people will assume
- 36:34because you have a big family, that must be how it is.
- 36:37And another thing is they'll think I can barely do it too.
- 36:41There's no way you're able to do it with six, right?
- 36:43But I thought that way when I had to, right.
- 36:46And I just did another video on this.
- 36:47You cannot compare your chapter 2 to someone's Chapter 11.
- 36:51So when you see the mom with six kids and you think, how is she
- 36:54doing that? I have two and I'm drowning.
- 36:56She thought the exact same thing when she had two because she's
- 37:00how she got there was a journey, right?
- 37:02So it's not that she's doing motherhood better than you by
- 37:05any means. She's just gone through more
- 37:07steps to get there. And more experience yields more
- 37:10patience. I was way less patient with my 2
- 37:14when I when I just had two and I've earned, I've gained more
- 37:16patience through prayer by the Holy Spirit and through just my
- 37:20experience of having more kids and the fact that you just have
- 37:23to surrender like you, like my house cannot stay as clean as it
- 37:27used to be. You know what I mean?
- 37:28You just have to surrender some things.
- 37:30But that was a journey to get there.
- 37:32So, so to the parent who who sees the mom of 6 and thinks
- 37:38sometimes we project, right? And we think she must not be
- 37:41giving them enough attention because there's no way because
- 37:43I'm drowning with these two. She was drowning too.
- 37:45She was drowning too at one point because it was all new to
- 37:46her too. So I think that's another thing.
- 37:49And sometimes we'll think we'll project what we're capable of on
- 37:53other people. And so I don't mean this in a
- 37:56bragging like I'm better, but just because you don't think
- 38:01you're capable of giving them enough attention doesn't mean
- 38:04this person's the same way. But again, you probably are.
- 38:08You're just in the trenches with two under 2 right now.
- 38:11And I was too. And I felt the same way.
- 38:12So it's just you, we, we, the best thing we can do is not to
- 38:16compare our journeys because how we got there is how we're able
- 38:19to handle these things, right. So those are some of the, the
- 38:21talks about big family. So we'll circle back to how I
- 38:24how, why I end up having so many kids when I didn't even want
- 38:27more than four. So I meet these women and my mom
- 38:31got pretty involved at this church and she would host baby
- 38:34blessings. So whenever a baby was due like
- 38:37within the month, they would all the pregnant women who were due
- 38:40within that month that we build a baby blessing and we say
- 38:42prayers over them and we, you know, do a rosary and we just
- 38:46chat and get together. And because this was very big
- 38:49family friendly, there was always like a group of women
- 38:52pregnant and do within the month, right?
- 38:54And I was one of them. I was pregnant with baby #4 So
- 38:56my mom was like, you should come to the baby blessing and meet
- 38:59these other women and you'll be one of the women we pray over.
- 39:02And I was like, OK, so I go and there's like four other women
- 39:06pregnant and then there's a big turn out and I sit down at a
- 39:09table next to some women who looked around the same age as
- 39:12me. And I said, so when do you think
- 39:15you're done having kids? Like, so when do you know that
- 39:17you're done having kids? And they kind of these women
- 39:20were devout Catholics by the way.
- 39:22They were properly categorized. They knew, they knew the
- 39:24church's teachings. And they were like, they were so
- 39:28gracious with me, like, well, what, what do you mean?
- 39:31How do you know when you're done?
- 39:31Like, what do you mean? How do you know when you're
- 39:33done? Like, you heard me, Like what?
- 39:36Like what? And so they start talking to me
- 39:41and I'm like, well, we never know when we're done, done.
- 39:46We're open to whatever God God gives us.
- 39:48And I'm like, excuse me, I'm 33. Like you're telling me I can
- 39:56have like 12 more kids if I go this route?
- 39:57Like no thank you. And I kind of start freaking out
- 40:01these poor women. Like they don't even know me.
- 40:02And I'm like, what do you mean? Like I'm 33 and like I already
- 40:05have 4 kids and like. Oh my gosh, what do you mean?
- 40:08Like if I'm trying to follow the Catholic teachings, like what?
- 40:10And I start freaking out and then she like, you know, they're
- 40:12so-called me like, no, no, there's natural family planning.
- 40:15Like the church, the church indoors.
- 40:16Like, you know, they promote natural family planning.
- 40:19And I, you know, I knew what that was, but I didn't know
- 40:21about all the different methods. I'm like, Oh no, there's like
- 40:23really reliable methods. There's a Marquette method and
- 40:26you test your ovulation and you chart and you this and you that.
- 40:29So this was all new information to me, but it's basically cycle
- 40:31tracking, right? And you use, you track your
- 40:34cycle and then you abstain during ovulation.
- 40:36And I remember being like, well, how's that different than birth
- 40:38control? Like, how is that?
- 40:40You know, trying to, I know everything, right?
- 40:42And so, and then I really did learn like, well, there's a
- 40:45sacrifice involved with that. There is a sacrifice when you,
- 40:50when you abstain and, and it's not you taking anything to
- 40:53purposely provide anything, right?
- 40:54You're just abstaining. So anyways, I was not sold on
- 40:57this. I was like, who's making up this
- 41:00rules? Is it priests who don't have any
- 41:02kids? I was like, I was like, where's
- 41:07the date in the Bible? So I go home, I'm not happy.
- 41:11And I tell and I tell my husband I'm like bait, did you know
- 41:15this? And he's like, you're like, we
- 41:19were the choir director you. Didn't know this.
- 41:22That's what they guys like. Just because people go to mass
- 41:24doesn't mean they know things like that was us.
- 41:27I didn't know and but it does, you know, we go to mass no
- 41:32matter what, right? But anyways, so he's like,
- 41:36that's not no, that's not true. So we're like we're, we're,
- 41:41we're going to prove the church wrong.
- 41:42OK, This church has been around 2000 years.
- 41:44We're going to prove you wrong. OK, Millennials, we're going to
- 41:46do it. So we go on the rampage with
- 41:52yeah, so we, we go and research and we're like researching for
- 41:56our point of view. And we're like we're researching
- 41:59like to solidify our argument. Just to clarify, the point of
- 42:01view is like what was your point of view?
- 42:04Oh, that you can completely be done when you want to be done.
- 42:07There was nothing wrong with. Plenty already.
- 42:09Like yeah, we have 4. Like what more do you want from
- 42:11us? Like we can totally make.
- 42:12As many as this guy. Like come on, man.
- 42:15Like we can get, he can get a vasectomy, you know, so, so
- 42:18we're researching and researching.
- 42:19And again, we're researching to prove our point, right.
- 42:22So we're Googling what we need to Google to get what we want to
- 42:25get. That we can have this vasectomy,
- 42:27we're done with kids. Like that's totally fine.
- 42:29Why are you? Why is there this other
- 42:31standard? Exactly.
- 42:32And I, I do want to emphasize Morgan, we're just talking about
- 42:34my journey here. We're just talking about my
- 42:35husband's journey. So as we're doing this research,
- 42:39it's like more and more making sense to us why the church is
- 42:42teaching this. And we're like, which I thought
- 42:44was very interesting because you're trying to prove it wrong,
- 42:46right? And so you're going in and
- 42:48you're going in and you're trying to, you're putting
- 42:49certain keywords in to make sure you can get your point validated
- 42:52because we're living in a time where any point can be
- 42:54validated. Look at all the, all the
- 42:56theories out there, right? You can say anything about
- 42:59anything and be like, no, that's wrong because and you can sound
- 43:02very convincing. So why weren't we finding
- 43:04anything to convince us like to, to show that we were right.
- 43:07So the more we research why and why, why, the more we became
- 43:10convicted. And and so the big thing, OK,
- 43:15now this is like where it gets this work.
- 43:17It's like a hot topic issue was I learned more about why God
- 43:27created sex, right? Because it's enjoyable, right?
- 43:31And you want to do it a lot, right, when you're with the
- 43:35right person, right. And so I was like, it's like,
- 43:40I'm like blushing 'cause. I fucking talk like.
- 43:44Her husband's really like, what is she going to say?
- 43:46It's. Funny, you're you're the you're
- 43:49doing a Mama session with me. I'm.
- 43:51Not always ask me anything. Monday ask me anything.
- 43:55Mama, Mama Monday. Ask me anything.
- 43:57And by the way, I think it's great to talk about how great
- 44:00sex is. Yes.
- 44:01To help make sure people understand like this is a good
- 44:03thing we've been given. It's amazing and especially with
- 44:06the right person with the right person.
- 44:08And here's another thing. I mean, if you want to talk
- 44:09about sex, I, I can do this whole thing about sex.
- 44:12But you know, Full disclosure, my husband and I did not wait
- 44:17until marriage. And it's a big, big regret of
- 44:21ours. And because here's the thing, we
- 44:24once we got married or whatever, we grew together in this.
- 44:30So what we have not this would ever happen, but like if we
- 44:35divorce, we you know, an old remarried would never happen.
- 44:38But that can never be recreated, right?
- 44:40Like what we have is something just uniquely between US and we
- 44:44grew together in this. And my poor husband, he's like,
- 44:47what is she going to say? I mean, I have 6 kids with him.
- 44:51Like it's obviously a very enjoyable experience, but it's
- 44:54something that is so unique to us because we grew together in
- 44:57it and we learned through it together.
- 44:59And when I was researching NFP, what I learned was sex becomes
- 45:05sacred again with NFP. So what I mean by that is when I
- 45:09was on birth control, we're having pre and real sex and then
- 45:11we get married, but I'm still on birth control.
- 45:12Sex was available whenever we wanted because I don't want to
- 45:15get pregnant. So there I don't want to call
- 45:16pregnancy a consequence by any means.
- 45:19I guess it's not necessarily a bad thing.
- 45:20OK, perfect. Yeah.
- 45:22And so pregnancy is the consequence of of, you know,
- 45:25having having sex, right. So when you have on birth
- 45:28control, you don't have to worry about that, right?
- 45:31So you can just do it whenever you want.
- 45:32And sex is just always available, which sounds great in
- 45:35theory, right? But it becomes pretty routine at
- 45:39that point. You know, like when's the last
- 45:41time you just like had a make out session with your husband
- 45:44that it didn't go anywhere when, you know, if you're not
- 45:46practicing out a fee, right? When's the last time you just
- 45:48like had those butterflies make out sessions like you did when
- 45:51you were younger? Right.
- 45:53And I mean, I know people, OK, like, I guess that kind of
- 45:55depends if you save your first kiss for marriage too.
- 45:58I I did not do that obviously, but.
- 45:59You're saying it's easy to take it for granted exactly because
- 46:02it's always there and it's almost always there to the point
- 46:05where you don't even like some couples, like don't even have
- 46:08they're not even being intimate with each other because like
- 46:10that availability creates these routines, create these
- 46:13distractions and busyness. So like they're not even having
- 46:16sex, they're not even making time for each other.
- 46:18And you know my like hot take on this, I get totally anecdotal.
- 46:22I'll throw us out there from the experiences of the women that I
- 46:25know is that the women who use NFP are actually ultimately
- 46:29having a lot more sex than the women who are on birth control
- 46:32in their marriages because they are, you know, there is this
- 46:38view of sex which is beautiful and we extremely positive and
- 46:44really intentional. Like we are going to have this
- 46:47space and time to be together. And it's holy.
- 46:50Whether you're trying to achieve children or because there's a
- 46:52serious reason you're avoiding, you know, children because
- 46:55you're preparing, you know, financially or health issues or
- 46:58whatever. And sex becomes like takes back
- 47:01this more sacred, like you said, space.
- 47:04Exactly. And once I learned that because
- 47:06it was, it was, it would become really routine and I felt like
- 47:10it kind of lost that specialness essentially.
- 47:13And so when we started practicing NFP, it was like, we,
- 47:16we, we couldn't do it sometimes when we wanted to.
- 47:19And that kind of made things a little steamier, like not going
- 47:21to lie. And so when so after baby #4 we
- 47:27become very like, convicted in this, right?
- 47:29And it's like, OK, fine, we're going to do this.
- 47:31But I wasn't happy about it and I said, OK, I'm going to do the
- 47:35Marquette method, which is a great method by the way.
- 47:37It's one of the most like proven methods and but it is tricky
- 47:41when you are postpartum. And just like birth control is
- 47:44not 100%, IUD is not 100%, nothing is 100%.
- 47:48The only 100% against pregnancy is abstinence.
- 47:50OK, So yes, IUD birth control like they have a much higher
- 47:54rate, but it's never 100%. I can't tell you how many moms
- 47:57have had got pregnant with their IUDI have pictures sent to me
- 48:00with babies holding the IUD in their hand.
- 48:02Like if moms like put it in their hand and be like, Oh my
- 48:04IUD baby. So the Marquette method, I think
- 48:07it's something like 98% effective when used right.
- 48:09And then it's like it's pretty effective to postpartum because
- 48:12of like an algorithm. And basically if for anyone I'm
- 48:14familiar with Marquette method is it tests your urine every
- 48:17single day. And for where you are in
- 48:19ovulation, you use a, you use a clear blue monitor and it tests
- 48:21to see where you are ovulating. And they really recommend you
- 48:25get a coach. So I got a coach.
- 48:26And again, I'm postpartum, so my cycle has not returned yet.
- 48:28And I'm exclusively breastfeeding.
- 48:30By the way, I exclusively breastfeed all my kids with all
- 48:32these pregnancy. Yeah.
- 48:33So I exclusively breastfeed all my kids.
- 48:34People assume, like if you're exclusively breastfeeding, you
- 48:36won't get pregnant. And for a lot of women, that may
- 48:38be the case. That was never the case for me.
- 48:39People assume I just wasn't breastfeeding, exclusively
- 48:41breastfeeding and would still get pregnant.
- 48:43So after baby #4 I'm exclusively breastfeeding.
- 48:46And I'm doing the Marquette method.
- 48:47And they did say, you know, there's like a 2% chance that
- 48:50you could still get pregnant. And, you know, but that's kind
- 48:53of like with anything really. And so, so I'm charting, I'm
- 48:57doing all the things and basically how the saying goes,
- 48:59when you're low, you're good to go.
- 49:01Like, because I really needed to, I wanted space between these
- 49:03babies. You know, I think we had like 4
- 49:05under 4. Like I just, I needed like we
- 49:08were, we were drowning. Like they say, what's it like
- 49:11having, what's it like having four babies that young?
- 49:13It's like a, this is a, this is a skip from Jim Gaffigan, but he
- 49:16says what's like having five babies?
- 49:18And he's like, oh, imagine you're in a pool drowning and
- 49:20someone hands you a baby. Like that's how we felt.
- 49:22I think that's one of the misconceptions about the
- 49:24Catholic faith too and about NFP is that oh, the argument is just
- 49:28have as many children as fast as you physically can and that's
- 49:32not the position it. Yes, be fruitful and multiply,
- 49:34be generous, be open to life always.
- 49:37Like even when you're practicing NFP, you're doing it with a
- 49:40recognition that if for some reason something goes off with
- 49:43your cycle and you're still, you know, you're obviously intimate
- 49:46with your husband and you do conceive of new life, then
- 49:48that's beautiful. Like you embrace that way.
- 49:51But it's so it's a it's a posture of openness instead of
- 49:53hostility or negativity. But of course you can space.
- 49:56Yes, you can just start. Especially when there's all
- 49:58these different factors that we face in modern life.
- 50:00And that doesn't mean you're contracepting.
- 50:03That means, like you said, you're keeping sex sacred and
- 50:06you're not contracepting the sex.
- 50:07You're there's. There's going to be periods,
- 50:09intermittent periods of abstinence.
- 50:10Exactly. Yeah, you said that beautifully.
- 50:12And so we do the Marquette method and I'm testing, I'm
- 50:15charting. And it said low.
- 50:18It was like low. And I was like, OK, cool, we're
- 50:19good to go. And not to be too, too much, but
- 50:24we're good to go. Things happen.
- 50:26The next morning I test my ovulation and it doesn't say hi,
- 50:30it says peak ovulation detected. And I was like, how did I go
- 50:34from low to peak? And I'm I'm looking at my chart.
- 50:35I'm like, what what just happened here?
- 50:38And obviously I don't know if this is for sure, but I talked
- 50:40through it with my coach and she goes, it seems like your first
- 50:44egg from ovulation just got like released during this time
- 50:48period. It's pretty God-given, right?
- 50:50So I was like, Oh my gosh, I'm going to be pregnant.
- 50:52Like I knew I knew for sure. And sure enough, I was and I, I
- 50:56have that video up of me telling my husband that I'm pregnant
- 50:59with baby #5 and he's in disbelief because we were
- 51:03practicing, we were charting, we were doing, but again,
- 51:05postpartum. So I don't have my cycle back.
- 51:09And I was really scared because this was my closest age gap.
- 51:13I think they're going to be like 15 months apart.
- 51:15Wow. So my 4:00 to 5:00.
- 51:17Yeah. So yes, exactly.
- 51:19So my my oldest was only 5 I think when I found out I was
- 51:23pregnant with baby #5 And I, I mean, the video is pretty cute.
- 51:29That was actually a crazy viral video.
- 51:32If you pull it up on YouTube it's most.
- 51:35Popular to find? Oh, that's easy.
- 51:37It's most popular. OK, no way.
- 51:48It's a pretty young baby in his hand.
- 51:51I'm crying right now. How old are you, Christian?
- 51:56Seven months. Here's six months.
- 52:06So is it? It's positive.
- 52:13I like her every time. I'm but look at this.
- 52:16Baby. But like he yeah, it all turned
- 52:18out OK, right. So this is where it kind of all
- 52:20shifts is and I get really emotional every time I talk
- 52:23about I get emotional. He's born.
- 52:27I look at him and I'm like, if it was up to me, you wouldn't be
- 52:33here. I think that was my and I have
- 52:36number six now too. And if it's up to me, neither of
- 52:38them would be here. And that's when I became just
- 52:42like fully convicted to being open to life.
- 52:44Like I can't imagine a world without them.
- 52:46And I mean, you see it like I was so scared and anxious and I
- 52:49was doing everything in my power.
- 52:52But This is why, This is why the church has this because because
- 52:56I just learned from me like God, God knows better than I do, you
- 52:59know, he, he knows better than me.
- 53:02And if, like I said, if it was up to me, they wouldn't be here.
- 53:04And so doing NFPI was charging. I was doing things.
- 53:07I, you know, was doing what I could, discerning in the way I
- 53:09thought was doing. But I was still blessed with
- 53:12this baby. And so that's what fully
- 53:15convicted me to being open to life.
- 53:17And maybe number six, we did not do NFP at that point.
- 53:21I was like, you know, I'm feeling good, like things are
- 53:22good. But I will say this, going back
- 53:24to the sacredness of sex between 5:00 and 6:00, we said we're
- 53:27just going to abstain at this point because the Marquette
- 53:30method is like a really, and I'll still use Marquette method.
- 53:32I am not trying to bash the Marquette method.
- 53:34We were just that 2% that got pregnant with it.
- 53:36And thank God, right? You saw the video, you saw like
- 53:38he's here and there was a reason for that.
- 53:40And that's why we do it, right? So, but I said, you know, after
- 53:44five I was like, I also have had, I'm not going to lie, like
- 53:47I've had, I have AI have a hernia, you know, I have really
- 53:50big babies like, like we mentioned, you know, 10 lbs,
- 53:53sometimes 11 LB babies. And so I said I really need to
- 53:56heal. I, I can't keep popping them out
- 53:58this quick. And so, so we decided it would
- 54:03be best to abstain until I got a cycle again.
- 54:06Well, that was taking a really long time, but we and I, I think
- 54:11by, I think by 6 months postpartum was like, that's it.
- 54:14I can't take this anymore. Like, but here's the thing.
- 54:17Here's the thing, we abstain. And when I tell people this part
- 54:20of the story that we had abstained for like months, like
- 54:236 months, I'll get, I'll get people saying like, well, how
- 54:29did you please your husband, right?
- 54:32They're like, I feel like there's this, this notion of
- 54:36like you need to, you need to serve your husband and.
- 54:39Kind of. A man needs sex.
- 54:40It's like a primal need. He has to have sex otherwise.
- 54:43And like we need to give our men a little bit more credit.
- 54:46They're they're you know, but some men will use will be like,
- 54:49no, that's the truth. And they they use that to their
- 54:51advantage. But I think the sexiest thing
- 54:54about a guy is like their self-control.
- 54:56And my my husband has amazing self-control.
- 55:01It's hard on him too. Don't get me wrong, like we
- 55:03both, but it's a very intimate and beautiful thing that you can
- 55:06only have with your spouse, right?
- 55:07So it wasn't as if it didn't come with its challenges and
- 55:09difficulties. But I will say this, it made sex
- 55:12sacred again. And it made things steamier on a
- 55:14level I never could have imagined.
- 55:16And there was this. This is my BTMI, my husband.
- 55:21Like there was this one night, the kids were all in bed, which
- 55:26was like a miracle in itself, but they're all on their own
- 55:29beds. And we were on the couch
- 55:31watching TV and he just started kissing me and we started making
- 55:36out. And then I was like, stop, I do
- 55:38not want to get pregnant. But it was like like high
- 55:40schoolers like making out on JT And I was like, stop.
- 55:42So we can't, we can't like, but it was like, I know this sounds
- 55:46so weird, but it was just like this an intimacy like we hadn't
- 55:50had in a long time. And, and it just, I don't know
- 55:54it because it's not readily available.
- 55:56So there's like this build up and then when you can, it's
- 55:59amazing. And you know, and if he comes
- 56:02with so many challenges and it's very hard, but it does bring
- 56:05that sacredness and specialness back.
- 56:07And so when we finally did, it was just this incredible
- 56:10experience that I don't think we would have ever experienced if
- 56:13we were doing it as routinely as we used to.
- 56:15And so it just brought back that specialness to it really.
- 56:18But it doesn't come without its challenges.
- 56:20I get very frustrated sometimes he gets frustrated too.
- 56:23But I think another thing that's really important to note though,
- 56:25is that we're both in this journey together.
- 56:27So it's not as if I'm a lot of people just assume that I'm the
- 56:29one being like, no, nothing for you.
- 56:31It's not it at all. Like this is a very much like we
- 56:33are on the same page, like this is a discussion we both have.
- 56:36And I think it's a beautiful thing that we can grow in this
- 56:38and feel this way about one another and about our journey.
- 56:41So, so that's, that's kind of my story on how I became open to
- 56:45life. And people will again assume
- 56:47like, Oh, you're just going to pop out a bunch of kids like,
- 56:50and it's like, no, we, we are, we can use discernment and we
- 56:53can, you know, and for me, I, I, yes, I've had them close
- 56:57together, but I don't think, I mean, I don't know what the Lord
- 57:02has planned, but I think if I continue using NFP, educating
- 57:07myself, getting a coach, I can, I can space them out the way,
- 57:12you know, that, that I hope that God, you know, I'm still
- 57:15following his plan, but spacing them out, you know, to, to meet
- 57:18my medical needs and my, and my family's needs too, you know,
- 57:22like, we have a lot of young kids and I would like a little
- 57:27bit of space. But I also think our, now that
- 57:28our baby's a year, you know, now it's now it's like, OK, like we
- 57:33got to go. It takes us about that year.
- 57:34And then we kind of get like a grip on things and yeah.
- 57:38What is so powerful is that, and there's so many gems of what
- 57:41you're saying, but that the Lord has given us all the tools.
- 57:44Yes. Which is crazy.
- 57:46There is abstinence, you can't abstain in your marriage.
- 57:48And yes, it's like, well, the man, what about the man needing
- 57:51sex? And like you said, like that's
- 57:52just a cultural narrative that basically says like men are like
- 57:56animals and they have to, they have to be able to do this
- 57:58sexual thing, otherwise they're going to go crazy.
- 58:00And the reality is there's a whole vocations that are
- 58:02celibate. Yes.
- 58:04And these are virile men. These are like men, men's men.
- 58:06They're not just like, oh, you're, you're like, you just
- 58:08couldn't get any. You're not interested in sex or
- 58:10you didn't. You don't get any interest.
- 58:12You have nobody became a priest. It's like some of the most
- 58:15masculine men I know are priests.
- 58:16I mean, can we all talk about Father Mike Schmitz and how
- 58:19handsome he is? Father Mike Chris has not been
- 58:23name dropped yet in that way in this show, but I'm glad it's
- 58:25happened all right. By the by the way, Father Mike
- 58:28Chris did a. Candle to my husband I have to
- 58:30say this, but I'm just saying I show him I showed him to a
- 58:33girlfriend who's not Catholic and she's like wins mass so but
- 58:38he's a great example of that what we look at as a society as
- 58:43like manly and. I think I remember he's talking
- 58:46to a philosopher, A bioethicist about this and he was saying we
- 58:50need food, we need air, air to breathe.
- 58:52We don't need sex. Like that is not something that
- 58:56it's a gift of your of someone else and yourself coming
- 58:59together, becoming 1 flesh and it's designed to bring life into
- 59:03the world. Exactly.
- 59:04So there's a special path for that.
- 59:05So you want to get into the other part then I don't know if
- 59:07this is OK or not, but people will say, well, oh, do you just
- 59:10do other things for your husband and no.
- 59:14And so that's another thing I'll get.
- 59:16I get comments on that all the time.
- 59:17We'll talk about public. Comments I think we should talk
- 59:20about that because I've also heard this is something, again,
- 59:23even among people who want to practice faith and want to be
- 59:26like live in a sacred way and follow God.
- 59:29I've also heard that some families are saying or some, you
- 59:32know, women that say, well, we, you know, we don't use
- 59:35contraception, but we do a pull, we do the pull out methods or we
- 59:39don't use contraception, but we do other things.
- 59:40We use condoms so. Yeah, we use condoms, obviously
- 59:43condoms or we do other things, things like other forms of
- 59:45sexual intimacy that don't involve intercourse.
- 59:48And that is, well, I'm curious. You're you're.
- 59:51I think you and I have the same thought about this because I
- 59:53said it to your producer and she's like, Lila Rose just said
- 59:56that on her podcast. But when I researched this,
- 59:58right, because I kind of thought that too, I was like, oh, we can
- 1:00:01just do other stuff then, right? My husband actually was the one
- 1:00:05who brought this up. He was the one who came to me.
- 1:00:07He's like, no, we can't. We can't.
- 1:00:09Because one what what sexist is unifying.
- 1:00:12We're both taking part. We're both experiencing this
- 1:00:14together. If you're just doing stuff for
- 1:00:17me to I don't even know what to say.
- 1:00:20Completion or orgasm, Yeah, that's just me using you to
- 1:00:24masturbate essentially, is what he said.
- 1:00:26And because there's, you know, and I know people, oh, I'm going
- 1:00:29to get so much crap for saying that right now.
- 1:00:32But this is just the viewpoint that we, I am not judging anyone
- 1:00:36what they do behind. I don't even want to know what
- 1:00:37anybody else does behind closed doors.
- 1:00:39So this is no judgement to anyone, but this is what we
- 1:00:41found for us. And I, I was like, Oh my gosh,
- 1:00:44yeah. Like we're, we're in a sense, if
- 1:00:46we're not unified in that, it is we, we, you just lose that
- 1:00:52unification a little bit. And it's just about, it's more
- 1:00:54about meeting the needs of the flesh at that point.
- 1:00:56And you don't have that soul, that soul bonding.
- 1:01:00I mean, some people might argue that that's not true at all, but
- 1:01:02that's how that's that's kind of how.
- 1:01:04We see that the underlying for us and the underlying principle
- 1:01:07is that sex is designed to be intimate, to bring intimacy and
- 1:01:11oneness. But the primary design of sex
- 1:01:13actually, like the reason we're bodies are designed sexually,
- 1:01:16you know, from a like ontological standpoint is to
- 1:01:19bring life into the world. That doesn't mean everybody can.
- 1:01:22There's infertility. That doesn't mean that every
- 1:01:23time you have sex, you can bring life into the world.
- 1:01:25But that's the design. And when you frustrate the
- 1:01:27design intentionally, that's where you break the moral law.
- 1:01:30Like there is a moral gun. It's not just for this is the
- 1:01:33other thing. This is very controversial.
- 1:01:34So stay with me, guys. He's listening.
- 1:01:36But this isn't just for Catholics, I think.
- 1:01:38I mean, before the 1930s, every Christian denomination, the
- 1:01:43Lutherans, the Anglicans, all of the Protestants were opposed to
- 1:01:46contraception, all contraception.
- 1:01:48Martin Luther and John Calvin called it like what you would do
- 1:01:51with a prostitute. Like, of course you wouldn't do
- 1:01:53contraception with your spouse. Why would anyone do that?
- 1:01:55And and then in the Bible and then the church fathers and
- 1:01:57doctors speaking out against it and not just contraception, but
- 1:02:00about against anything that frustrates a sexual act to
- 1:02:02remove the potential for procreation.
- 1:02:05And that includes A poet method that includes, you know, math,
- 1:02:07you know, masturbation, even if it's mutual masturbation because
- 1:02:10they're like, well, what about the wife?
- 1:02:12Why just please the man? Well, even if it's but it's
- 1:02:14again, the sexual pleasure without the potential to be open
- 1:02:18for life. And that's this is baked into
- 1:02:21the design for sex. And today this is so
- 1:02:23controversial because we're I'm. Going to hear it.
- 1:02:28But but we're so we're completely the opposite today,
- 1:02:31the opposite today. And this is post sexual
- 1:02:33revolution largely, but then also like the advent of the
- 1:02:35birth control, the early 20th century is that sex is about
- 1:02:38adult pleasure. And then children are optional.
- 1:02:42Some people will not even have children.
- 1:02:44I was, I was actually on a podcast recently debating or
- 1:02:47discussing with a very lovely lady, but she's this, you know,
- 1:02:50DINK very publicly avowed. I'm going to do a DINK podcast
- 1:02:53that's going to celebrate being child free children.
- 1:02:55Child free is just as good as anyone else.
- 1:02:57Like, why are you so pro mothers all the time?
- 1:02:59Like, of course I support mothers too, but like we should
- 1:03:01be celebrating. You know, it's a choice to do
- 1:03:03what I want to do. And you know, I just they're
- 1:03:07that idea in human history is so unique.
- 1:03:10It's it's it's so unique to this.
- 1:03:12To this culture, really. So now it's the opposite.
- 1:03:14It's like, oh, you want, you want to have a lot of kids or
- 1:03:16not even, you want, you're open to a lot of kids.
- 1:03:18Like that's so strange. And yeah, well, and people say,
- 1:03:23well, they only had lots of kids back in the day because they had
- 1:03:25to have people working on the farm and they needed the labor
- 1:03:27and stuff. And I don't, I mean, I'm sure
- 1:03:29that's true to an extent, but. But I think going back to what
- 1:03:32you said earlier, which is so beautiful that you saw the face
- 1:03:34of your son and you thought if, if.
- 1:03:37It was up to me. It was up to me.
- 1:03:38You wouldn't be here. I mean, that gives me chills
- 1:03:42because I just think about every child and their value and their
- 1:03:46worth. And I think about us, Chrissy,
- 1:03:48like we made it into this world because of God.
- 1:03:51I mean, yes, our parents and because of God and that's every
- 1:03:56child is purposed and designed. So there's no such like when
- 1:03:59you're in a marriage, like there's this idea of an
- 1:04:01accidental child I. Know.
- 1:04:04Maybe it was an accident for. Us you, yeah.
- 1:04:06Wasn't your plan my? Own, quite frankly, distorted
- 1:04:08thinking, but to God there is no human being.
- 1:04:11That's an accident. And if he entrusted a child to
- 1:04:14us, he's also going to give us the grace.
- 1:04:16Like that's the other thing that people I think often don't
- 1:04:20remember or trust enough. And yeah, I will say like I do
- 1:04:24have a hard time with, I've been very blessed financially and I,
- 1:04:27I come from, I come from privilege.
- 1:04:29I come from. So I do very much empathize with
- 1:04:32those who are struggling financially.
- 1:04:33That's can be very scary. So I, it is something that's
- 1:04:36hard for me to speak on. But I will say, I know other big
- 1:04:39families and who, who live within a very different means of
- 1:04:43life than I do. And I have just seen first hand
- 1:04:46how the Lord provides for them, even in our case, right?
- 1:04:48I mean, by no means were we going to be like homeless when I
- 1:04:51found out I was pregnant, but it was very scary.
- 1:04:53And yet things unfolded that provided for us with each kid.
- 1:04:59And so, you know, now we're in a financial position where we're
- 1:05:01so entirely blessed that I, you know, it's, it's fine, but that
- 1:05:05wasn't always our case. And so I do, I do, I truly do
- 1:05:09empathize with people, though, who are like, you know,
- 1:05:11struggling with finances, like they're trying to be
- 1:05:13responsible. Truly, they're trying to be
- 1:05:14responsible. They're trying to give their
- 1:05:15child the best life. And they're saying, you know, I
- 1:05:18just want to be responsible. I don't want to have a lot of, I
- 1:05:21would love to have a big family, but I can't afford a big family.
- 1:05:23So I, I completely, you know, understand where they are coming
- 1:05:26from. But I will say, I mean, you have
- 1:05:28the right to discern. And that's another thing.
- 1:05:31No one's saying you have to have a bunch of kids, but practicing
- 1:05:34natural family planning, you know, you still can discern, you
- 1:05:37can still do these things. And and then, you know, if the
- 1:05:40Lord you're, you're just allowing God's will to bring
- 1:05:42another soul into this to this world.
- 1:05:44And if he truly looks at your life and is like, no, like
- 1:05:46you've been blessed enough, you've done your part.
- 1:05:48Like I see where you are in life.
- 1:05:50I just truly believe he'll take care of you.
- 1:05:52And I, and again, it's again, we're not saying go, you have to
- 1:05:56go have a bunch of kids. It's like, no, we have, we have
- 1:05:59NFP where it gives you that ability to discern.
- 1:06:02And the Catholic Church teaching.
- 1:06:03So I have this app called Truthfully that we use on the
- 1:06:05show. Sometimes I want to just read
- 1:06:06this for people because I think it's so illuminating to actually
- 1:06:10know what the church teaches about NFP.
- 1:06:12So I'm going to say what does, and this is a this is a app,
- 1:06:17truthfully, that gives you all of the teachings of the Catholic
- 1:06:21Church as well as just Bible theology, philosophy about
- 1:06:25bioethics and about just life in general, moral issues, theology,
- 1:06:29whatever. So what does the Catholic Church
- 1:06:32teach about NFP and why? It's a moral method for couples
- 1:06:37to regulate births in accordance with God's plan for marriage.
- 1:06:41And there's all of these lists for why the church supports NFP.
- 1:06:45But NFP respects the natural rhythms and fertility cycles of
- 1:06:48a woman's body, promoting openness to life while allowing
- 1:06:50couples to discern their family size responsibly.
- 1:06:53It supports the NFP because openness to life, The church
- 1:06:56upholds that every marital act should remain open to the
- 1:06:58possibility of life, talks about respect for the body, marital
- 1:07:02bonds, virtue of self-control, conformity with moral law.
- 1:07:04Now I want to ask it why this is back to the the question of
- 1:07:09mutual masturbation, because I again, good.
- 1:07:11They're like, yeah, OK, no contraception.
- 1:07:13We're going to do mutual masturbation.
- 1:07:15That's going to be, you know, I'm using like technical terms
- 1:07:17of cringing. But but that's what we're just
- 1:07:19talking, We're talking real here.
- 1:07:21So, so why should every marital act?
- 1:07:23And by marital act we mean sexual act of intimacy, right?
- 1:07:26Why should every? This isn't like a kiss on the
- 1:07:28cheek or a long drawn out kiss. Yeah, and this is we're talking
- 1:07:31sexual activity that involves pleasure and orgasm.
- 1:07:34So why should every marital act be open to life?
- 1:07:39And why is mutual? Why would mutual masturbation be
- 1:07:42wrong in a marriage? Marital intimacy is intended to
- 1:07:44be both unitive and procritive, a deep expression of love
- 1:07:47between the spouses and open to life always.
- 1:07:50These these two aspects are inseparably linked and together
- 1:07:53reflect God's design for marriage.
- 1:07:55Regarding mutual masturbation within marriage, the church
- 1:07:57teaches that sexual acts must respect both the unitive and the
- 1:08:01procurative purposes of sexuality.
- 1:08:03Mutual masturbation deliberately separates the unitive, separates
- 1:08:06the unitive act from the procurative potential, focusing
- 1:08:09slowly on personal gratification rather than the comprehensive
- 1:08:13giving and openness to life intended in marital intimacy.
- 1:08:16And to get super theological here, it's always, it's always
- 1:08:22love always has to say yes to the whole of the other person,
- 1:08:27not part. And that's what the design of
- 1:08:31sex like. It's complete.
- 1:08:32I'm giving myself to you and I'm receiving you to me.
- 1:08:36And I'm not going to separate that out like mutual
- 1:08:39masturbation. I'm not going to separate that
- 1:08:40out like the pull out method. I'm not going to separate that
- 1:08:42out with a barrier of latex like I'm fully yours.
- 1:08:45You're fully mine. And we put our fertility in the
- 1:08:48hands of God. Now if we feel there's a serious
- 1:08:50reason to again delay pregnancy, a space births, whatever it
- 1:08:56might be, that's what absence is for.
- 1:08:58We're now we can sit side by side, which is holy, look at
- 1:09:00each other across the table, which is also holy, and have
- 1:09:03spiritual intimacy together, emotional intimacy together,
- 1:09:06intellectual intimacy together. And that physical intimacy have
- 1:09:09is that really, I would say in some ways the peak, it is the
- 1:09:13peak intimacy we can experience together physically.
- 1:09:16But you don't have to always do that.
- 1:09:18Yes, and I. Have intimacy spiritually.
- 1:09:20I want to touch on that because that's another thing people
- 1:09:22like, well, what are you doing? I'm like, we grow intimate and,
- 1:09:24and such on a deeper level. So when you have to remove that
- 1:09:27physical aspect, you can grow so much closer in a way that you
- 1:09:32probably wouldn't have if that was there.
- 1:09:34And so it's been truly a gift. Honestly, we, I always say, oh,
- 1:09:37we're channeling our inner Joseph and Mary.
- 1:09:40And, but you grow more intimate And, and if, again, if sex is
- 1:09:44just readily available, it's just been when we have to
- 1:09:48practice periods of abstinence, we grow intimate on a spiritual
- 1:09:53level, truly. I mean, we, we have intimate
- 1:09:56conversations and we, we grow more intimate together.
- 1:09:57And I think, and I think that's what, and then that transcends
- 1:10:00into your sex life truly. I mean, if you are intimately
- 1:10:03connected with someone on an emotional level, on a spiritual
- 1:10:06level, that's going to transcend physically.
- 1:10:08Another thing we talk about too is God forbid something happened
- 1:10:11to one of us where that act would have to be removed
- 1:10:13completely. God forbid we got in a car
- 1:10:14accident and someone got paralyzed.
- 1:10:16So at that point, do you just go, well, I got to get my needs
- 1:10:20met somewhere? For a very long time.
- 1:10:22Yeah. And I'm like, is that what you
- 1:10:24would think? Because God forbid something
- 1:10:26happened to my husband and he, he couldn't do that for whatever
- 1:10:30reason. Illness, something physical, you
- 1:10:34know, I'd be praising God that he was just alive, right?
- 1:10:38And I would never, ever think, well, what am I going to do for
- 1:10:41my fleshly needs? That when you know, and and
- 1:10:44people might think that I've known I've in my past, a bunch
- 1:10:48of people I've across will say, oh, no, someone was dying of
- 1:10:51cancer and they just got like a boyfriend on the side or
- 1:10:53something. It was just like or so.
- 1:10:55And I'm like, is that, yeah, I don't think that's normal.
- 1:10:59They're like, well, they have needs and it's like, this is,
- 1:11:01this is what's we've really liked to hear.
- 1:11:06I mean, that's just about your own pleasure at that point.
- 1:11:09And I, I guess people would argue that that's not a bad
- 1:11:10thing, but I mean, gosh, if something happened to one of us,
- 1:11:14I'd, I'd like to think that we'd be by each other's side no
- 1:11:16matter what. It, that's why it's so important
- 1:11:19for your marriage to be rooted in something so much more than
- 1:11:21just a physical nature, because in sickness and in health, and
- 1:11:26if it's rooted in that, then what, what happens when that has
- 1:11:28to be taken away for whatever reason?
- 1:11:30I can't. Well, the biggest question I get
- 1:11:33asked is what do you do during the six weeks you can't have sex
- 1:11:36when you're postpartum? And sometimes my husband will
- 1:11:40do. Ask me any things and we'll put
- 1:11:41up on my YouTube channel. And this question frustrates him
- 1:11:46because he's just like, what is wrong with you guys?
- 1:11:49In your worldview, yeah, I have to be doing sexual things during
- 1:11:52the six week period, six week period of my wife's postpartum.
- 1:11:55When she's we just talked about how difficult postpartum is,
- 1:11:58right? Like I mean these.
- 1:11:59You're you're bleeding on having sexual pleasure.
- 1:12:01She's recovering. I've had women being like, oh,
- 1:12:04well, I still had to do stuff for him.
- 1:12:06I'm like, when you're like, in a diaper and you're handling a
- 1:12:09newborn and like, are you serious right now?
- 1:12:11Like, you felt pressured to do that.
- 1:12:12And you know, I'm not trying to comment on anyone's marriages or
- 1:12:16anything like that, but that was a little heartbreaking to me.
- 1:12:19I'm not going to lie like that. And and and I'm not even, it's
- 1:12:23not even a dig at like that person.
- 1:12:25I think it's just something we're kind of sold as a culture
- 1:12:27really. And so my husband answers this
- 1:12:30and he's like, they go, what do you do in that six week period
- 1:12:33when you can't have sex or whatever?
- 1:12:35He goes grow up and be a man and practice some self-control.
- 1:12:39My gosh. But he's pretty to the point.
- 1:12:43And he's like, take care of your wife, like, make sure she's OK.
- 1:12:45I mean, you guys have some bigger fish to fry right now.
- 1:12:47And yeah, I was like, I hear some of these stories from him.
- 1:12:52And I'm just like, you've given soul in pregnancy and
- 1:12:55childbirth. You give everything.
- 1:12:57You give your body, you give your, your, you know, your
- 1:13:00mental capacity, your emotions. And now on top of that, it's
- 1:13:04like your husband's like, now give me more.
- 1:13:06Even though you've given everything, you've given
- 1:13:08everything to create a family you both wanted.
- 1:13:11This is something you both wanted.
- 1:13:12This is your child, both of your child.
- 1:13:14And the woman is the only one who has to sacrifice her body.
- 1:13:17Truly. You know, she's sacrificing her
- 1:13:18body and that's not enough. You're telling me that's not
- 1:13:21enough right now. And you, you, she's got to meet
- 1:13:23the needs of everyone else. And you right here.
- 1:13:25Like, at what point can you put your needs aside as a husband?
- 1:13:28Your fleshly needs, really. I mean, these aren't even like
- 1:13:30base. These aren't even like needs
- 1:13:32needs, right? And say, OK, I got to make sure
- 1:13:34my wife is taken care of. She look what she did for our
- 1:13:37family. Look what she she went through
- 1:13:38to bring this family that we both wanted.
- 1:13:41Like you've sacrificed so much of your body.
- 1:13:44Maybe him not needing something right then there could be his
- 1:13:47sacrifice. That is such a good point,
- 1:13:49Chrissy. It's like sacrifice is built
- 1:13:52into love and Jesus on the cross is that ultimate example of love
- 1:13:56giving his body for us. And in a family, in a marriage,
- 1:14:01we like you say we sacrifice our bodies in in childbirth, in
- 1:14:06labor and delivery, in pregnancy, in postpartum, not in
- 1:14:10some, you know, evil, horrible, dark way.
- 1:14:12It's actually, it's just a beautiful thing, beautiful.
- 1:14:14But what is a man sacrifice? And yes, of course, provision
- 1:14:18needs to protect the family, but this I this idea of
- 1:14:21self-discipline and sacrificing one's immediate gratification
- 1:14:26for the bigger plan for love of the family.
- 1:14:28I mean, that's what it's all about.
- 1:14:30That's what teaches us and prepares us for being able to go
- 1:14:33to heaven and be with God in His perfection and His perfect, all
- 1:14:37consuming love and you. Want to talk?
- 1:14:39Journey we're on. You want to talk about
- 1:14:40protection, Protect your wife during this period.
- 1:14:43She's very vulnerable in so many ways right now.
- 1:14:45So protect her. Don't, don't ask for more, more
- 1:14:47from her. And that's another big thing
- 1:14:49people will ask us about. Like how do we, how do we make
- 1:14:51time for a marriage? How do we do things?
- 1:14:53How do we split things up? And a big thing I emphasize is
- 1:14:55it's never 5050247. It's sometimes he's given 100%
- 1:15:00and I can only give so much. Like, especially if I just given
- 1:15:03birthright, like I need to be in.
- 1:15:05Sometimes my births have been really hard and I had to be in
- 1:15:07bed and just be with the newborn.
- 1:15:09And he'll, he'll wrangle all five other kids, you know, and,
- 1:15:12and he'll do everything like he's taking care of the whole
- 1:15:15house. He's not expecting me to, you
- 1:15:17know, if I'm feeling good, I can do it, but he's not expecting
- 1:15:19anything from me. So there's times, especially
- 1:15:21postpartum is when I really lean on him and he's, it is like 100
- 1:15:25zero. Sometimes I won't say 0 because
- 1:15:26I'm still taking care of the newborn and breastfeeding and
- 1:15:28stuff. But there's times where if my
- 1:15:29husband's having like a really busy time with work, like, you
- 1:15:31know, I'll take on more if I can, you know, And so it's just,
- 1:15:34it's a partnership. I love that.
- 1:15:37OK, I've got to ask you for people listening who want to
- 1:15:39explore NFP more. What's your you mentioned
