- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's word together. In Luke chapter 22, we read
- 0:46Luke's account of one of Jesus last days before his
- 0:48crucifixion. We read about Jesus and his
- 0:51disciples eating what would come to be known as the Last Supper.
- 0:55And then eventually we see Jesus retreat to the Mount of Olives
- 0:58to pray, knowing that he had already been betrayed by Judas
- 1:01Iscariot and was about to be arrested.
- 1:04Listen to what Jesus prays in this, the most painful moment of
- 1:07his life. He says, Father, if you are
- 1:10willing, remove this cup from me, yet not my will, but yours
- 1:15be done. Jesus is not making light of
- 1:19what is about to happen to him. This is real, raw, honest prayer
- 1:23to the Father. He does not desire the cross.
- 1:27He's not looking forward to being betrayed and crucified.
- 1:30However, here we see the heart of Jesus made abundantly clear
- 1:34once again, over and above his desire for this cup of death to
- 1:38pass from him more than He desires to not experience that
- 1:42physical and emotional pain. He desires God's will.
- 1:46He wants what God wants. Not my will, but yours be done.
- 1:52This calls us as the readers back to the Lord's Prayer.
- 1:55When Jesus says your Kingdom come, your will be done on earth
- 1:59as it is in heaven. Jesus knows what we must learn,
- 2:04that what God says is best is always best.
- 2:08Though it may be painful in the moment, though it may result in
- 2:11discomfort or heartbreak or even death, God's way is the best
- 2:15way. And we can rest in handing over
- 2:18our lives, our futures, to the Lord, allowing His will to be
- 2:23done in US. Now think about this.
- 2:27We know that God is sanctifying us.
- 2:29He's making us holy. He's working in us to align our
- 2:33desires with His desires, and over time we will more and more
- 2:38want what He wants. But what about those times when
- 2:41those desires don't line up? What about when God's will for
- 2:45our lives is contrary to what we think would be best?
- 2:50What about when the relationship doesn't work out?
- 2:52When the job doesn't come through, when children or
- 2:56grandchildren aren't on the horizon, when the prognosis
- 2:59isn't a +1, we know that God is working all things together for
- 3:04our good, for our sanctification, for our
- 3:07holiness. And so when we meet situations
- 3:12that work out differently than we hope, we don't have to be
- 3:15afraid. We don't have to be discontent.
- 3:18We don't have to be anxious. Because God is working it all
- 3:21together for our good. His ways are higher than our
- 3:24ways. His thoughts are higher than our
- 3:27thoughts. So take heart, Christian.
- 3:30You can believe wholeheartedly that His will is better than
- 3:34yours, better for His name, better for His Church, and
- 3:38better for you. Because that's true.
- 3:42You can walk in the model of Jesus here on the eve of His
- 3:44death. You can pray.
- 3:47Pray boldly. Pray honestly.
- 3:49Pray to the God who hears, who cares, and who is working all
- 3:53things together for your good. And when His answer is not what
- 3:57you'd hoped for, know that He is always doing something better,
- 4:02something higher, something greater than you even knew to
- 4:05ask for. Not my will, but yours be done.
