- 0:28When you're ready, Let's dive into God's Word together.
- 0:44In John chapter 15, Jesus gives us a beautiful portrayal of the
- 0:47Christian life is that of a branch connected to a vine.
- 0:51He says I am the true vine and my father is the vine dresser.
- 0:56He then commands each of us to abide in Him.
- 0:59We are like branches that when closely connected to the vine,
- 1:03the source of their energy and nourishment, grow much fruit.
- 1:07When that branch is removed from the vine, though it is
- 1:10fruitless, it's dead. So it only makes sense that
- 1:14Jesus would say in verse 4, Abide in me and I in you.
- 1:17As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in
- 1:21the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in me.
- 1:26He goes on in verse 5 to say I am the vine, you are the
- 1:29branches. He who abides in me and I in Him
- 1:33bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
- 1:38Think about that. That is how dependent we are on
- 1:41Christ. Apart from him, apart from his
- 1:43power and life and love flowing through us, we can do nothing.
- 1:48We cannot bear fruit. We cannot please God, we cannot
- 1:52do anything good apart from the power of Christ working in and
- 1:55through us. So what does that mean for us?
- 1:59It means that our success, our fruit as Christians, has little
- 2:02to do with our white knuckled effort in our own strength and
- 2:05much to do with our dependence on Jesus.
- 2:08We are of great value to the Kingdom when we are deeply
- 2:12connected to Christ, and we are of absolutely no value to the
- 2:16Kingdom when we are independent of Him.
- 2:18When we try to do His works outside of his strength.
- 2:22We are desperately dependent on Jesus.
- 2:25We are massively in need. Listen to how 19th century South
- 2:29African pastor Andrew Murray put it in his book, Abide in Christ.
- 2:33He said the Christian often tries to forget his weakness.
- 2:38God wants us to remember it, to feel it deeply.
- 2:41The Christian wants to conquer his weakness and be freed from
- 2:44it. God wants us to rest and even
- 2:46rejoice in it. The Christian mourns over his
- 2:49weakness. Christ teaches his servant to
- 2:51say, I take pleasure in infirmities.
- 2:54Most gladly will I glory in my infirmities.
- 2:58The Christian thinks his weaknesses are his greatest
- 3:00hindrance in the life and service of God.
- 3:02God tells us that it is the secret of strength and success.
- 3:07It is our weakness, heartily accepted and continually
- 3:10realized, that gives our claim and access to the strength of
- 3:13him who has said, My strength is made perfect in weakness.
- 3:19Do you believe that? Do you really at your core
- 3:22believe what the apostle Paul tells us in Second Corinthians
- 3:25chapter 12, when he says, and he has said to me, My grace is
- 3:29sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.
- 3:34Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my
- 3:36weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.
- 3:40Therefore, I am well content with weaknesses, with insults,
- 3:44with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties
- 3:47for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am
- 3:51strong. It is our weakness, our
- 3:53dependence, our need that God uses when He works in and
- 3:57through our lives. Our own dire need is the very
- 4:00opening that Jesus uses to bear lasting fruit in our lives.
- 4:04Whose strength are you living in today?
- 4:07Are you abiding in Christ the vine, or are you trying to bear
- 4:10fruit on your own as a dead branch disconnected from its
- 4:14source of life? Abide in Him, depend on Him, and
- 4:19watch as He does in your life what you could never do apart
- 4:24from Him.
