- 1:38Speaker 1: Please working the Money Making Conversations JJ and Trina Hashton.
- 1:44Speaker 1: How are you pretty good? My friend? Pretty good? Welcome
- 1:47Speaker 1: back to the show. Thank you for having me. I'm
- 1:50Speaker 1: always whether you are well, trainer, you're there, Yes, I'm here.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Thank you for having you. Absolutely as you saw, I
- 1:58Speaker 1: made some comments about myself, off and the family and
- 2:02Speaker 1: uh and a lot of people when uh you I'm
- 2:04Speaker 1: talking to two entrepreneurs here, small business owners. People are
- 2:08Speaker 1: living their dreams and their dreams are being put in
- 2:10Speaker 1: place through their goal setting, their consistency. Where is put
- 2:14Speaker 1: in perspective? Before we actually get into into the book,
- 2:18Speaker 1: the role of the family and uh, and it's in
- 2:21Speaker 1: your role of being successful as entrepreneurs. We we we
- 2:27Speaker 1: honestly believe that your family comes first. You believe families
- 2:31Speaker 1: is your first ministry. And now often say that God
- 2:34Speaker 1: does things in order. He's not gonna bless you with
- 2:38Speaker 1: this you know family, this wife, these children and then
- 2:41Speaker 1: expect you to put them to the side so that
- 2:44Speaker 1: you can build a career um outside of the home.
- 2:48Speaker 1: But we believe that God there's things in order, so
- 2:51Speaker 1: that if you build your home and you do it
- 2:53Speaker 1: in the correct way, honoring your wife and teaching your
- 2:56Speaker 1: children the principles of God, that He will set things
- 2:59Speaker 1: in life for you when it comes to your career
- 3:03Speaker 1: and the things that you the people that you need
- 3:05Speaker 1: to meet, the people that you need to connect with.
- 3:07Speaker 1: All of that for us come together when you put
- 3:11Speaker 1: your marriage and your family first. Because God is we
- 3:15Speaker 1: believe God is a god of order. So in doing so, UM,
- 3:20Speaker 1: if you if you've read our book, and I believe
- 3:22Speaker 1: you have, and maybe someone else out there has read it. Um,
- 3:26Speaker 1: when things were not in order in our household, uh,
- 3:31Speaker 1: things were not in order. For now that one of
- 3:34Speaker 1: our careers, we didn't know what we wanted to do,
- 3:37Speaker 1: and even the things that we did desire to do
- 3:40Speaker 1: just didn't seem to come together the way we needed
- 3:43Speaker 1: them to come together. UM. But it wasn't until we
- 3:47Speaker 1: decided that we were going to put our family first. UM.
- 3:51Speaker 1: J J had made a decision that he was going
- 3:53Speaker 1: to UM get his family back together at whatever cost
- 3:58Speaker 1: that meant, whether it meant UM having to start all
- 4:01Speaker 1: over coreer Wiz or whatever it meant. He was determined
- 4:04Speaker 1: to put his family back together. And once he did that,
- 4:08Speaker 1: believe it or not, UM, what he started hearing from
- 4:11Speaker 1: God started changing, the music that he started hearing in
- 4:15Speaker 1: his conversation and his relationship with God started to change.
- 4:19Speaker 1: And as a result of that, UM, you see the
- 4:22Speaker 1: j J that you have today. That is the Grammy
- 4:25Speaker 1: nominated and the stellar in UM, and that's traveling all
- 4:29Speaker 1: over the country. That did not happen until we got
- 4:32Speaker 1: our family together. JJ, your turn me. I mean all
- 4:39Speaker 1: life always said is so perfectly UM. You know we
- 4:43Speaker 1: we initially and this is probably UM you can attest
- 4:47Speaker 1: to this as well, Sean. UM, we we got married
- 4:51Speaker 1: before things really happened for us, and before we started
- 4:55Speaker 1: we weren't even think about starting businesses and all that.
- 4:57Speaker 1: We just got married and we were still making music
- 5:01Speaker 1: and everything while we were while we were married, and
- 5:04Speaker 1: like my wife said, you know, we've gotten some moderate success,
- 5:09Speaker 1: but things didn't changed for us until our our family
- 5:14Speaker 1: was in order, our home was in order, and then
- 5:17Speaker 1: we were actually clear in our minds, we were clear
- 5:20Speaker 1: in our horrors. There was nothing, there was no hinder
- 5:22Speaker 1: us between us and God, and he was able to
- 5:26Speaker 1: give us different visions, different dreams, different ideas that have
- 5:30Speaker 1: exploded on us and and really put put us another place. So, um,
- 5:36Speaker 1: we always say family first, home first. God is not
- 5:39Speaker 1: going to trust you to be a blessed to the
- 5:41Speaker 1: world if he can't even trust you with your house. Absolutely,
- 5:44Speaker 1: It's really when I was reading the book, it was
- 5:47Speaker 1: you know, the book is about trainers, truth and j
- 5:50Speaker 1: J's journey. It's it's it's sectioned out throughout the book
- 5:53Speaker 1: like that. And one of the things that we're gonna
- 5:55Speaker 1: go through different sections of the book. And I'm not
- 5:56Speaker 1: gonna first of all, as a motivating book. Let me
- 5:58Speaker 1: just tell it, there's an uplifting book. This is not
- 6:00Speaker 1: a sad book. This is not this is not a
- 6:02Speaker 1: testimony about what we did wrong. It's about about information
- 6:05Speaker 1: about what you can do right, and using their life
- 6:08Speaker 1: is as an example, which is very powerful because a
- 6:10Speaker 1: lot of people don't want to reveal any um missteps
- 6:15Speaker 1: in their life because they're there there. That's the shallow
- 6:18Speaker 1: life that we live. You know. I want to be perfect.
- 6:20Speaker 1: I want to live in life that doesn't have any
- 6:24Speaker 1: negative moments. But that's not truth. Those are not truths.
- 6:27Speaker 1: And that's this book is about truths and what what
- 6:29Speaker 1: What continually came out of each chapter I read was
- 6:32Speaker 1: they set examples up. They go into the faith, to
- 6:34Speaker 1: go into the Bible and show examples why this happened,
- 6:37Speaker 1: why Jesus turned water into wine, which was at a
- 6:41Speaker 1: marriage ceremony that he was invited to and he didn't,
- 6:45Speaker 1: he didn't And so these are all important things. And
- 6:47Speaker 1: so I like it because of the fact that you know,
- 6:50Speaker 1: you know, when you walk away from something, you and
- 6:52Speaker 1: you learn something. I learned from this book, and so
- 6:55Speaker 1: I want to point this out so I might have
- 6:56Speaker 1: a good time with this book. I'm I'm up beat
- 6:58Speaker 1: with Sean McDonald's up beat. You know, I walked, Awa,
- 7:01Speaker 1: I walked. I can't wait for this interview. I got
- 7:03Speaker 1: all these postings we're gonna top and uh, because you know,
- 7:07Speaker 1: you know my natural background, I'm an uplifting guy. And
- 7:09Speaker 1: so it was one section of the book called cell
- 7:12Speaker 1: Phones and Passwords, where cell phones and password, if you like,
- 7:20Speaker 1: I can put my phone down anywhere in my house
- 7:22Speaker 1: and my wife can pick up my phone and shire
- 7:24Speaker 1: she asked me, what's your password, I'd give it to her.
- 7:27Speaker 1: So many people make mistakes with the two phones. I've
- 7:29Speaker 1: never had two phones in my life. First of all, okay,
- 7:32Speaker 1: I have one phone, one phone number. I never understand
- 7:34Speaker 1: the two phone system. Secondly, if if if you put
- 7:39Speaker 1: your phone down in anybody that you love or dating, fiance,
- 7:44Speaker 1: a wife goes towards your phone and you dive into
- 7:46Speaker 1: the phone, then you got a problem. You got a
- 7:50Speaker 1: problem because you got to be honest on all levels.
- 7:53Speaker 1: And that's all you're saying in this book, and using
- 7:56Speaker 1: the example of cell phones and password is a great
- 7:59Speaker 1: example from the common folks. We know how we're tied
- 8:03Speaker 1: to that technology, and this technology can be a barrier
- 8:07Speaker 1: to get in your family right, to get your relationship
- 8:10Speaker 1: on point correct right, that's so true. I know I
- 8:14Speaker 1: never understood why in Teak housand nineties we are still
- 8:19Speaker 1: using cell phones or any kind of electronic device to
- 8:23Speaker 1: hide stuff because as we know with computers, they can
- 8:26Speaker 1: be great, but they also can be a curse. They
- 8:28Speaker 1: can ruin your life. They will tell every piece about
- 8:32Speaker 1: you that you don't want. If you pick up someone's
- 8:35Speaker 1: cell phone these days, it's almost like a into their lives. Um.
- 8:39Speaker 1: So you gotta be an open book and you have
- 8:42Speaker 1: to be very transparent with your spouse about everything because,
- 8:46Speaker 1: as you say, it's only going to take a crack
- 8:48Speaker 1: of a cell phone um for them to open up
- 8:51Speaker 1: and see what you've been doing on your off time. Yes,
- 8:55Speaker 1: and for me that that that was part of our
- 8:58Speaker 1: rebuilding process, the fact that we were able to be
- 9:01Speaker 1: as transparent like there's nothing, there's no um, there's no sight,
- 9:07Speaker 1: there's no Paige, there's no code that my wife does
- 9:11Speaker 1: not have from me, because we need to be able
- 9:13Speaker 1: to be open with each other there. And the thing
- 9:16Speaker 1: is she doesn't even have to look, she doesn't even
- 9:18Speaker 1: care to look because she knows, she knows everything. But
- 9:20Speaker 1: if there was something that I kept the secret, then
- 9:22Speaker 1: she'd want to look. You're exactly right, and there's According
- 9:25Speaker 1: to book, marriage is all tied to the amount of work,
- 9:30Speaker 1: and if you're not willing to put in the work,
- 9:32Speaker 1: do not get married. If you're not willing to put
- 9:35Speaker 1: in the work into your business, do not start a business.
- 9:38Speaker 1: If you're not willing to put in work in the
- 9:39Speaker 1: job that you're doing four day hours a week, change jobs.
- 9:43Speaker 1: You have to be committed to be successful, and marriage
- 9:46Speaker 1: is a part of that process. Your family is part
- 9:48Speaker 1: of your process, and family tied to making it number one,
- 9:51Speaker 1: meaning that you're prioritized the set up because if you
- 9:54Speaker 1: if you got all the success in the world and
- 9:57Speaker 1: you go home to a dysfunctional family, guess what, you know,
- 10:01Speaker 1: they're gonna be this function. You're nice gonna be this function.
- 10:03Speaker 1: You're gonna wake up this function. So fix the family first,
- 10:08Speaker 1: and I promise you this shift to be right. That's
- 10:10Speaker 1: called a balanced life. That's what I preach on this show.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Another thing I wanted to talk about on the show
- 10:14Speaker 1: What You Guys, was talking on the phone having time
- 10:17Speaker 1: for each other. I know we've got like three minutes left,
- 10:20Speaker 1: but I wanted to bring that up because that's an
- 10:22Speaker 1: issue that people have. You know, they they talk when
- 10:26Speaker 1: they see each other, you know, because the telephone is
- 10:29Speaker 1: the new flowers to me, you know, send your wife
- 10:31Speaker 1: flowers and your girlfriend flowers, send your send your fiance flowers.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Because you can, you can communicate. Communications is so key
- 10:38Speaker 1: because it's no excuses. Back in the old days, you know,
- 10:41Speaker 1: you're you're roting. Without telephone, the regular telephone, you couldn't drive.
- 10:44Speaker 1: You go to work, then you talk. You could actually
- 10:46Speaker 1: drive home and have a conversation. Use that as valuable
- 10:51Speaker 1: communication time for your relationship. Correct, that's what That's exactly
- 10:55Speaker 1: what we do. And we encourage all couples to find
- 10:58Speaker 1: a way to um give each other quality time and
- 11:02Speaker 1: for us because they're both busy. What we what I
- 11:05Speaker 1: vowed is when I'm in my car and I'm driving,
- 11:07Speaker 1: and I could be driving our way, I could be
- 11:09Speaker 1: driving three hours away. I called her and we talked
- 11:12Speaker 1: the whole time I'm driving, because that's uninterrupted time between
- 11:17Speaker 1: you and your spouse. And and I don't I don't
- 11:19Speaker 1: even click over somebody calling me. They text me in whatever.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I answer those text when I get where I'm going.
- 11:24Speaker 1: But that's time I spend with my wife. And there's
- 11:27Speaker 1: been plenty times I drive I'm on my way home.
- 11:30Speaker 1: I talked to get in the garage because when you
- 11:35Speaker 1: see each other, you say, hey, how you doing, how
- 11:37Speaker 1: would you day? And that's it as opposed to giving
- 11:40Speaker 1: them time when you actually allow each other to talk
- 11:43Speaker 1: out your ideas, talk about your point and talk about
- 11:45Speaker 1: what your dreams are, talking about how you feel, you know,
- 11:48Speaker 1: the things you can really talk through when you're on
- 11:50Speaker 1: the phone in the car. This is amazing just hearing this,
- 11:53Speaker 1: having this conversation. You gotta got the album that came
- 11:55Speaker 1: out and get this always came out the Miracle Worker
- 11:58Speaker 1: when shout that out that that came last Mark, Uh,
- 12:01Speaker 1: how's it doing? Uh? What's the expectations of that one
- 12:04Speaker 1: after that tremendous success on the previous one? It's doing great.
- 12:08Speaker 1: You know what I found with this one, I wanted
- 12:10Speaker 1: to go a little bit of a different direction. You
- 12:12Speaker 1: deserve it a lot of us to really have a
- 12:14Speaker 1: great um reach into Africa. So we recorded a few
- 12:17Speaker 1: African songs and it's funny just one one of the
- 12:20Speaker 1: songs we just released a video for I'm Part of
- 12:25Speaker 1: You have like in four days and have like five
- 12:27Speaker 1: hundred of thousands of user someone four to something thousands
- 12:29Speaker 1: of ye because that's how they consume music. So we
- 12:33Speaker 1: wanted to release music in a way that will really
- 12:35Speaker 1: appeal to the African continent. And it's been really successful
- 12:39Speaker 1: so far. Awesome, my man. I want to thank both
- 12:42Speaker 1: of you guys for coming on my show. All right.
- 12:44Speaker 1: As you can see, I've fallen in love with the
- 12:47Speaker 1: the book, your brand, you are getting. Uh this is
- 12:50Speaker 1: your home, training us your home too. And I'm glad you.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I'm glad you. I'm glad you realize that I'm with
- 12:56Speaker 1: your girl. I'm with you boy. We've ain't We appreciate
- 13:00Speaker 1: your support and the supports for real. And I realize
- 13:03Speaker 1: that people when I talk about success, when I talk
- 13:07Speaker 1: about work, you have to put work on anything that
- 13:09Speaker 1: you want, twenty four hours a day. I always tell
- 13:12Speaker 1: everybody there's an hour in each day that you can
- 13:15Speaker 1: you last to be successful. Put to time in and
- 13:17Speaker 1: you will win. We'll be right back with more from
- 13:20Speaker 1: McDonald and money making conversations. Don't touch that. Restrictions may apply,
- 13:24Speaker 1: plans and cost coverage. You may very call protected by
- 13:25Speaker 1: Car for details. In these hard economic times, you've got
- 13:28Speaker 1: to do whatever you can to save money. One of
- 13:30Speaker 1: Our biggest expenses can be our cars, especially when unexpected
- 13:34Speaker 1: repair bills hit. Not anymore. If you do own a
- 13:36Speaker 1: car trucker suv made from Higher, you could stop paying
- 13:40Speaker 1: for car repairs. That's right. You might not have to
- 13:43Speaker 1: pay a penny to have it repaired. Just styal Star
- 13:46Speaker 1: Star one seven on your mobile phone now to see
- 13:48Speaker 1: if you qualify. You must have an automobile made from
- 13:52Speaker 1: Higher and all repairs for your engine, transmission and much
- 13:55Speaker 1: more can become a thing of the past. Dial Star
- 13:57Speaker 1: Star one seven on your mobile phone to day and
- 14:00Speaker 1: get your car protected before your next repair bill hits.
- 14:03Speaker 1: That's right, total protection for your car and no more
- 14:06Speaker 1: repair bills. Just dial Star Star one one four seven
- 14:09Speaker 1: on your mobile phone now to see if your car
- 14:11Speaker 1: qualifies that Star Star on seven never paid for Kyle
- 14:15Speaker 1: repairs again. Just dial Star Star one f seven on
- 14:19Speaker 1: your mobile phone now dial Star Star one one four seven. Hi.
- 14:24Speaker 1: This Rashean McDonald and you're listening to money making conversation.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Welcome back to my world, my world of information, my
- 14:30Speaker 1: world of being able to deliver facts not fiction to
- 14:33Speaker 1: you about how you can be successful in your life.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Whether you're an employee, whether a person just live in
- 14:39Speaker 1: a world in your dreams. How you can take those
- 14:41Speaker 1: dreams and turn them into goals. How you can turn
- 14:42Speaker 1: those goals into action items. Action items is how you're
- 14:46Speaker 1: able to deliver uh success. I'm not telling everything. I'm
- 14:49Speaker 1: not telling you that everybody should get up at four
- 14:51Speaker 1: fifteen in the morning. I'm just telling you set a
- 14:54Speaker 1: time of consistency in your life, because if I don't
- 14:57Speaker 1: get up at four fifteen, it throws my whole day
- 14:59Speaker 1: off and I'm in a rush. So my body clock
- 15:02Speaker 1: has been committed to that when I get up and leave.
- 15:05Speaker 1: One of getting a four fourteen is not an easy
- 15:07Speaker 1: get up. So I'm not bragging about it. I'm just
- 15:10Speaker 1: telling you my role, my time for success. That's the
- 15:12Speaker 1: time I clocked. That's the time I clocked in. If
- 15:15Speaker 1: some people might clock in the eight o'clock, in them
- 15:17Speaker 1: more nine o'clock, the more Rashaun clocks in the four am.
- 15:21Speaker 1: That's how I do it at one level. But also
- 15:24Speaker 1: I'm committed to the relationships that I have around me,
- 15:26Speaker 1: the people who surround me that enable me to be successful.
- 15:29Speaker 1: You cannot be successful by yourself. Family has to be first.
- 15:34Speaker 1: You must leave a balanced life, and you have to
- 15:36Speaker 1: have a clear understanding that your future is only determined
- 15:39Speaker 1: by the people that you surround yourself with. If you
- 15:41Speaker 1: have nay sayers around you, they will wear you down.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Close the door on they sayers. Close the door on
- 15:47Speaker 1: people who say I know about that? Are you sure
- 15:52Speaker 1: nobody's ever done that before? Oh? I don't know. Really? Okay,
- 15:59Speaker 1: good luck slammed the door on those people. My next
- 16:03Speaker 1: guest is the person I would never slammed the door on.
- 16:06Speaker 1: He's been in the donut making game for over forty
- 16:09Speaker 1: five years. He will gladly state if you cut him,
- 16:13Speaker 1: he will bleed glaze, as in glazed donuts. He started
- 16:18Speaker 1: Cousin Dozen, which is CD for short, during a twenty
- 16:21Speaker 1: four years ago and now has two locations in Brooklyn,
- 16:25Speaker 1: New York and Queens, New York. I've been to the Brooklyn,
- 16:28Speaker 1: New York location. I have pictures of me eating those doughnuts,
- 16:31Speaker 1: so I am a committed fan of what he does.
- 16:35Speaker 1: He'll be franchising in approximately a hundred and twenty days.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Please welcome to money making conversation Again. I've made him
- 16:41Speaker 1: on like two years. Please welcome to money making conversation.
- 16:44Speaker 1: My man Todd Jones. Hey, Sean, how's it going pretty good? Uh?
- 16:50Speaker 1: Oh yeah, work where yet? Man? Because it's just just
- 16:52Speaker 1: by work time for you. Huh, it definitely is, man.
- 16:56Speaker 1: But I got a bunch of committed people, man that
- 16:59Speaker 1: can handle the range of the business. Why I kind
- 17:02Speaker 1: of relax a little bit because you know, like you said,
- 17:04Speaker 1: you gotta have that balance. Man, You definitely gotta have
- 17:06Speaker 1: that balance. Now when you say the word work, because
- 17:09Speaker 1: you relax because you're on the phone talking to me
- 17:11Speaker 1: promoting your brand. So that's not really technically relaxing, but
- 17:14Speaker 1: in your world of physically out there, because your brand
- 17:17Speaker 1: has changed, it allows you to be able to, as
- 17:20Speaker 1: I say, go out there and seek God opportunities to
- 17:24Speaker 1: grow your brand. Correct. That's that's definitely correct. That's definitely correct.
- 17:29Speaker 1: It's it's it's now. You know, for all those years
- 17:31Speaker 1: I've been working, you know, in the business, now I'm
- 17:34Speaker 1: working on the business. It's a whole different philosophy, whole
- 17:38Speaker 1: different perspectives. Um, that's how you really get both by
- 17:41Speaker 1: working on the business. Now, let's talk about the business.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Let's talk about your experience first, okay, because you know
- 17:49Speaker 1: nobody wakes up just making donuts. I know I can't. Yeah,
- 17:53Speaker 1: I would be honest with you. Is that I am?
- 17:56Speaker 1: You know I have Krispy Kreme app on my phone.
- 17:59Speaker 1: I will tell you that, you know, so I can
- 18:02Speaker 1: just clicking and find out when the lights on and
- 18:04Speaker 1: say the Atlanta or wherever I met, and I will
- 18:07Speaker 1: go there. Because I love Blade donors. I don't like
- 18:10Speaker 1: to do I'm going to be honest with you. I
- 18:11Speaker 1: don't like the donors with all those little food food
- 18:13Speaker 1: with a little chocolate covered in a little be done
- 18:16Speaker 1: in a little raising brands and no, no, no, no,
- 18:19Speaker 1: give me Glade donut. I love cake donors too, now,
- 18:23Speaker 1: but those Blades donuts at the wall, I'm winning. I'm winning. Well, well,
- 18:33Speaker 1: let me just shout out Kristy Cream Sublime Donuts out
- 18:36Speaker 1: there in the land, and all those mom and top
- 18:38Speaker 1: donor shops out there. I'm about donor kind of saw them.
- 18:41Speaker 1: I'm the ambassador donuts. I love all donuts. You know,
- 18:45Speaker 1: we all can win the thing as competition. Could you
- 18:48Speaker 1: say competition? That means it's not enough. It's all about cooperation.
- 18:52Speaker 1: I'm in the donut business with all these other big brands.
- 18:57Speaker 1: So uh so, now with being said, how did it
- 19:01Speaker 1: all start for you in the donut business? So years ago, Uh,
- 19:06Speaker 1: my sister worked in the donut shop called a company Too,
- 19:10Speaker 1: and it was owned by three African American men. First
- 19:15Speaker 1: time I ever saw African men. First time I've ever
- 19:23Speaker 1: seen three African American men owning something, and I think
- 19:27Speaker 1: that was my inspiration. You know. From there, I saw
- 19:30Speaker 1: them calling the shots, paying the bills, you know, just
- 19:33Speaker 1: being in charge and charge of the destiny. So that shop,
- 19:37Speaker 1: uh was in existence for about three or four years,
- 19:41Speaker 1: then it closed, and then I started working for Mom
- 19:44Speaker 1: Pop donor shops. And from working from Mom and Pop
- 19:47Speaker 1: down the shops, I eventually landed a job with the
- 19:51Speaker 1: big brand Dunkin Donuts. Worked for them for twenty years.
- 19:55Speaker 1: It was the highest paid baker in Dunker Donuts history.
- 19:58Speaker 1: I drove a BMW you that said by donors Rashan,
- 20:02Speaker 1: I was making dump I was gitting it. So after
- 20:08Speaker 1: about twenty years, I was working for one of the
- 20:11Speaker 1: largest duck of Donor franchises and um, they decided to
- 20:15Speaker 1: sell it to another owner and he decided I was
- 20:18Speaker 1: making too much money. He fired me. Um, and UM
- 20:23Speaker 1: give me one week seven stay and that was it.
- 20:27Speaker 1: And I said, Rashan, this is never gonna happen again,
- 20:30Speaker 1: never gonna happen. Agap. My daughter was supposed to be
- 20:32Speaker 1: born three months before that, and here I has with
- 20:35Speaker 1: no job because I like to read books. The spirit says,
- 20:40Speaker 1: go to Barns and Nobles, relaxed, going to bars and nobles.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Walk past magazine racks. I'm told me to stop. I stopped.
- 20:48Speaker 1: I look up Entrepreneur magazine. Can't make this up for Shan.
- 20:52Speaker 1: I opened up Entrepreneur magazine and right there was a
- 20:56Speaker 1: donor machine. I said, God, say no more. And I
- 21:01Speaker 1: never ever looked back. You open up the magazine. Yeah,
- 21:07Speaker 1: the donor machine, the exact donate machine that I'm using
- 21:10Speaker 1: state yep, wow wow yeah you know I when you
- 21:17Speaker 1: look back on it, he just gave you the push.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Oh yeah it was. It wasn't. It wasn't a nice push,
- 21:24Speaker 1: but it was a gush. Yeah. Has had i've not
- 21:29Speaker 1: been fired, I probably have been. I probably have been
- 21:34Speaker 1: a dunk of Dona franchise v probably probably. But that
- 21:39Speaker 1: wasn't what God has for me. He had for me
- 21:42Speaker 1: to on my own franchise and be the franchise ar
- 21:45Speaker 1: who sells franchises to other people. Right, so let's talk
- 21:50Speaker 1: about let's talk about the name. How did you come
- 21:52Speaker 1: up with the name, and then we're gonna talk about
- 21:54Speaker 1: the product, and then we're gonna talk about the franchising.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Let's talk about how how did you come up with
- 21:59Speaker 1: the name? So all ideas come from God, Right, I
- 22:04Speaker 1: just happened to be open enough to receive that. That
- 22:09Speaker 1: was my gift from God. The name Cousin doesn't anything
- 22:11Speaker 1: I've ever come up with, any idea of it ever
- 22:13Speaker 1: come up with. I give all glory to God because
- 22:16Speaker 1: that's where it comes from. So you know how it happens.
- 22:20Speaker 1: You know, I go to sleep, I wake up and
- 22:23Speaker 1: it's like, because it doesn't wow, thank you God. That's
- 22:28Speaker 1: how guess what? And you're accepting of it. That's that's
- 22:32Speaker 1: that's the beauty. You know a lot of people, you know,
- 22:34Speaker 1: a good thought to him, come to him and they're
- 22:36Speaker 1: on their third thought. You know, well, it's not like
- 22:39Speaker 1: that's really you know, I always tell people ride that
- 22:42Speaker 1: first thought. That's the thought. You ride that third thought
- 22:45Speaker 1: of the first thought really is wasting of your thoughts. Okay,
- 22:50Speaker 1: so go back to the first thought. So Cousin doesn't
- 22:52Speaker 1: came to you said, that's the name of my business exactly.
- 22:57Speaker 1: And it fits perfectly because of the fact that when
- 23:00Speaker 1: you have a cousin's other experience, it's like family you know,
- 23:05Speaker 1: when you come to the shop, Hey, cousin, how are
- 23:07Speaker 1: you doing right? And what this experience to be family oriented? Yes, sir,
- 23:11Speaker 1: yes you know, because a donut is a donut is
- 23:14Speaker 1: a donut. Were an experience. We do what we call
- 23:18Speaker 1: either tainment, which means you can see that don'tor being made.
- 23:23Speaker 1: You could smell a donor being made, you could taste
- 23:26Speaker 1: it made. We had all these senses. It's an experience.
- 23:31Speaker 1: I love this guy. I love it because he got
- 23:33Speaker 1: me hungry. I'm hungry, I'm waiting on a donor and
- 23:36Speaker 1: you're in New York City. Now here's the thing about it.
- 23:39Speaker 1: This day you said, you create an interactive experience. Like
- 23:41Speaker 1: you said, Peter t you can smell it and taste
- 23:45Speaker 1: it and see it, and you create and you also
- 23:49Speaker 1: have a signature. Donna is the final cake, which is
- 23:51Speaker 1: another one of my favorite the carnival is desserts is
- 23:56Speaker 1: the final cake. So tell me exactly what is the
- 23:59Speaker 1: final dawn? Because I'm gonna feels like it's a ben
- 24:02Speaker 1: kind of like Okay. So my partner Eric Santiago, who's
- 24:07Speaker 1: affectively known as easy Glaze, we are always brain stone
- 24:11Speaker 1: and stuff, and we said we need to have a
- 24:14Speaker 1: unique donut that can like signify who we are. So
- 24:18Speaker 1: I started thinking Brooklyn. I'm like, wait a minute, Cody Allen.
- 24:23Speaker 1: So he looks at me and he goes, yeah, Cody
- 24:25Speaker 1: Allen And at the same moment we go, oh, no, Kate,
- 24:29Speaker 1: I could put it together. We go funnel cake donut bingo.
- 24:33Speaker 1: That was it. So it's a combination, just like a
- 24:36Speaker 1: cronut as a crossan don it together with a funnel
- 24:40Speaker 1: cake donut as a funnel cake and a donut together,
- 24:44Speaker 1: you look your sinister with your food dome a donut.
- 24:58Speaker 1: I love it. I'm just if if you're ever in Brooklyn,
- 25:01Speaker 1: you gotta go buy and Steve because you you are,
- 25:04Speaker 1: you are, You're both locations now. You spend most of
- 25:05Speaker 1: your time at the Brooklyn location. The way actually because
- 25:10Speaker 1: we're building this franchise. Um, I'm you know, sometimes that's broken.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Sometimes the Queen's you know, it depends on you know,
- 25:16Speaker 1: what I'm doing for the day. But um, usually you
- 25:20Speaker 1: can find me in Brooklyn. Uh. He's the man. Like
- 25:23Speaker 1: he said, if you cut him, he will bleed glaze.
- 25:25Speaker 1: He's the owner of co owner of Cousin doesn't they're
- 25:29Speaker 1: franchising out there. How can they reach out to you?
- 25:32Speaker 1: Uh learn more about the franchising process, taught, Well, you
- 25:37Speaker 1: can reach out at fo at Cousins doesn't uh dot com.
- 25:41Speaker 1: But like I said, after a hundred twenty days, you know,
- 25:44Speaker 1: we'll have perspectives and you know, people could um see
- 25:47Speaker 1: what it is that we got. And we're actually, especially
- 25:51Speaker 1: the beginning stage, we're looking for individuals with high net
- 25:55Speaker 1: worth because what we want to do is sell them territories, sir,
- 26:00Speaker 1: you know, like buying minimumal ten franchises. Were also throwing
- 26:03Speaker 1: a mobile unit with that. That's how we've become the
- 26:06Speaker 1: fast going franchise and franchise history, not by doing addition,
- 26:09Speaker 1: by selling one here and one day and one dare.
- 26:12Speaker 1: By doing multiplication, that's how you become the fastest going
- 26:16Speaker 1: franchise franchise history. But Man Todd, thank you for coming
- 26:19Speaker 1: on my show. Man Cousin doesn't. I'll be in New
- 26:22Speaker 1: York next month, definitely will come by and see I
- 26:24Speaker 1: know Tracy Logan, my producer who came by and saw
- 26:27Speaker 1: you yesterday with her daughter. She sent me photos. We
- 26:30Speaker 1: support the people we love and we love you. Man
- 26:34Speaker 1: restrictions may apply, plans and cost coverage may very called
- 26:37Speaker 1: Protected my Car for details. In these hard economic times,

- 27:44Speaker 1: provide a step by step, easy to understand blueprint that
- 27:47Speaker 1: drives listeners to realize their dreams and aspirations. Until you
- 27:51Speaker 1: do the business plan or incorporate or actually create that product,
- 27:56Speaker 1: start selling products, the universe doesn't have to deal with.
- 28:02Speaker 1: My next guest is an amazing person. Been knowing her
- 28:05Speaker 1: since my l a days way back in two thousands,
- 28:09Speaker 1: and she's one of the premier management and production companies
- 28:11Speaker 1: for family and faith inspired content. Check this out. Her
- 28:16Speaker 1: current production slate is certainly impressive, with two shows on air,
- 28:20Speaker 1: The Next Big Thing BT and Loving Listing v H one,
- 28:24Speaker 1: two Lifetime movies Victoria Gotti, My Father's Daughter February which
- 28:29Speaker 1: was just this year, and The Clark's Sisters, which I
- 28:32Speaker 1: interviewed and she says early called a keen I for
- 28:38Speaker 1: must see TV program has even as seven major networks
- 28:42Speaker 1: auntieing up. Okay, Now, first of all, Rashawn does not
- 28:45Speaker 1: have one show on TV. They're clamoring for her abilities.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Please welcome, good friend. Long time been so long since
- 28:54Speaker 1: I've talked to because she has one of the best
- 28:56Speaker 1: laughs in Hollywood. Please welcome to Money Making Conversation Producer
- 29:00Speaker 1: Extraordinary Holly Carter. Hi, hey, big timer, how are you
- 29:08Speaker 1: doing time? Okay, let's put the blast with the faith
- 29:15Speaker 1: and all this. But I'm mentioning all this stuff. This
- 29:18Speaker 1: has to be uh, you know, here's I was. I
- 29:21Speaker 1: was at NBC UNI and and I mentioned your name
- 29:28Speaker 1: and they just gushed with compliments about how professional you are,
- 29:34Speaker 1: that you are a creative genius, that you are a
- 29:39Speaker 1: producer extraordinaire, and it's just it's just watching you grow
- 29:46Speaker 1: your brand. Tell us about what is your brand? Ms Carter? Um,
- 29:53Speaker 1: you know what, First of all, that's so awesome. It's
- 29:56Speaker 1: awesome to know that you know, your reputation is speaking
- 30:01Speaker 1: for you and that means a lot to me. Um.
- 30:05Speaker 1: But um, you know, my brand is redemptive, provocative, informative, entertaining,
- 30:14Speaker 1: and aspirational content. That's that's what I'm up. That's what
- 30:18Speaker 1: represents my faith, you know, my way of life. Um,
- 30:22Speaker 1: what I believe is? Now? What ask this question then,
- 30:27Speaker 1: because you're ended with it, What do you believe in
- 30:32Speaker 1: in terms of my faith? Well? You say, you say
- 30:35Speaker 1: your aspiration, your faith and what you believe in that
- 30:38Speaker 1: that was a lead off into something else. Besides that,
- 30:41Speaker 1: is it all tied to faith? Is it believed in
- 30:43Speaker 1: the storytelling that you want to tell or that the
- 30:45Speaker 1: people you want to have a relationship with when you're
- 30:48Speaker 1: producing these type of shows. What is that all tied to?
- 30:51Speaker 1: I guess I apologize for that confusing question, but that's
- 30:54Speaker 1: what I'm extending it beyond where you ended it, because
- 30:57Speaker 1: it's all about relationships, correct, got it? Yeah? I believe
- 31:01Speaker 1: in relationships that you know that God allows us to create, cultivate,
- 31:06Speaker 1: maintain um because you know, relationships are key and um.
- 31:13Speaker 1: You know, some relationships are seasonal reasonabal and then there's
- 31:18Speaker 1: some for a lifetime. And you know, I thank God
- 31:22Speaker 1: for the wisdom to know the difference in in the
- 31:24Speaker 1: three seasonal reasonable and and for a lifetime. There you
- 31:28Speaker 1: go on point, just trying to educate my audience to
- 31:31Speaker 1: understand how you are driving your concept because people approach
- 31:35Speaker 1: me all the time with creative ideas. I can make
- 31:38Speaker 1: a lot of money with this ra Sean, Okay, I
- 31:40Speaker 1: got it. But what's the basis of it? What's what's
- 31:43Speaker 1: the plan? Uh? What talent has attached to this and
- 31:47Speaker 1: so one of the things that I always enjoyed doing
- 31:49Speaker 1: was Emerged Summit. Are you still doing Emerge summits? Oh? Yes,
- 31:53Speaker 1: we're going into year eleven next year. Um that you know,
- 31:57Speaker 1: that is an extension of my purpose in Hollywood to
- 32:02Speaker 1: merge the sacred and the secular, bring opportunity and platforms
- 32:06Speaker 1: to other believers who are creative and you know, and
- 32:09Speaker 1: want to impact culture through entertainment. And so Merge is
- 32:13Speaker 1: a very very big part of what I do and
- 32:16Speaker 1: what I represent, and it will be a part of
- 32:17Speaker 1: my legacy. Now if it started traveling now, member, I
- 32:21Speaker 1: used to always go to l A. And then I
- 32:23Speaker 1: saw it on the East coast. Is it still based
- 32:25Speaker 1: on the in l A. Or is it traveling from
- 32:27Speaker 1: different to different cities. Well, we are one year on
- 32:32Speaker 1: in l A for the three day event, and then
- 32:34Speaker 1: the next year we travel um, you know, so we
- 32:38Speaker 1: are you know, it's a national event now, but each
- 32:40Speaker 1: every other year we're in a different market. Okay, So
- 32:45Speaker 1: what market was it in? This is the Merge Summer
- 32:47Speaker 1: we're talking about? Is Angeley for the complete weekend of education,
- 32:51Speaker 1: empowerment and entertainment. I used to always attended in Los
- 32:54Speaker 1: Angeles names on the road. So what what market was
- 32:57Speaker 1: it in the summit? Well, this was the year that
- 33:03Speaker 1: it toured and so we were at essens in July.
- 33:06Speaker 1: So we curated UM three major conversations UM in July
- 33:12Speaker 1: at Essence Festival, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Okay cool? So
- 33:16Speaker 1: now will it be back in l A, back in
- 33:20Speaker 1: l A? Okay cool? Three days? Three days? Uh? And
- 33:24Speaker 1: so with that being said, when does it? When do
- 33:26Speaker 1: you start promoting that? Is it promoting at the top
- 33:28Speaker 1: of the year. How do you do that? We will
- 33:31Speaker 1: send out kind of a save the Day by October
- 33:35Speaker 1: uh this year for next year, and it's the last
- 33:38Speaker 1: week in August next year. Okay cool? Let me know
- 33:42Speaker 1: so I can support you through my social media fan
- 33:45Speaker 1: club members. I'd love to put that in my monthly
- 33:48Speaker 1: newsletter and promote your brand from the merged Summit. Okay,
- 33:53Speaker 1: I will certainly let you know. Thank you so much
- 33:55Speaker 1: for Sean. I appreciate that. Okay, Cool. Let's talk about
- 33:57Speaker 1: what Let's talk about how did you come up with
- 34:00Speaker 1: creative ideas? Let's talk about let me dive into your
- 34:02Speaker 1: head of ms carter because your your platforms are our
- 34:07Speaker 1: faith based. Uh, how do you how do you how
- 34:10Speaker 1: do you sit around and just think of an idea?
- 34:12Speaker 1: Do you make a phone call? Do you do you
- 34:15Speaker 1: have a staff that you pitch to? How does the
- 34:18Speaker 1: evolution of creativity happen in your world? Um? You know,
- 34:24Speaker 1: it's a mixture of several things. Sometimes people bring me ideas,
- 34:29Speaker 1: other times I curate them based on something that I
- 34:33Speaker 1: want to do. Um and then and then there are
- 34:37Speaker 1: times when the team will generate an idea. So it
- 34:41Speaker 1: definitely varied, Like to show that's on NBC, I'm sorry
- 34:46Speaker 1: to show that's on d et calor Next six Things. Um,
- 34:50Speaker 1: that idea was brought to me and I developed it.
- 34:53Speaker 1: I brought in the team, we developed it, I sold it,
- 34:56Speaker 1: and that's how it got on the air. It was
- 34:59Speaker 1: kind of a germ of the idea, and we ended
- 35:01Speaker 1: up kind of refurbishing, kind of repackaging and redeveloping it
- 35:06Speaker 1: to what it is now. The idea that's on v
- 35:10Speaker 1: H one. It was just literally based on my relationship
- 35:14Speaker 1: with one of the stars of the show. It was
- 35:16Speaker 1: his continent, it was his business, and I thought this
- 35:19Speaker 1: would really make a good television show. Let's let's do
- 35:22Speaker 1: this and that's how that happens. That's love and listings, right, Yeah,
- 35:28Speaker 1: that's motherless thing. That's on one, and then we're talking
- 35:31Speaker 1: about the next big thing. This is only there's on
- 35:33Speaker 1: BT and that the judges Damon dash On their Tina Davis,
- 35:38Speaker 1: and there's twelve up and coming R and B and
- 35:40Speaker 1: hip hop artists through this. Basically, you say it's grueling development.
- 35:44Speaker 1: So I'm assuming that you start with twelve and you
- 35:47Speaker 1: end with one. That's how it works. On the next
- 35:48Speaker 1: big things. Yeah, there's there's one winner that's crowned the
- 35:52Speaker 1: next big things, and then after that, then after that
- 35:56Speaker 1: you move on. So I'm assuming that in your office
- 35:59Speaker 1: some where in Hollywood there's just a there's just just
- 36:03Speaker 1: giant pitch room, correct, mm hmmm. Yes. We have what's
- 36:07Speaker 1: called of development development time, and during that development time
- 36:12Speaker 1: we talked about new ideas, things that have been tip
- 36:15Speaker 1: people bring up um ideas, and and then we also,
- 36:20Speaker 1: you know, continue the development of current projects that are
- 36:23Speaker 1: on our slates. The thing about it that you know,
- 36:25Speaker 1: I asked you that question, Rachean, what what are you
- 36:28Speaker 1: most proud of? And when I think of Holly, I
- 36:31Speaker 1: think of the years I've known you. The thing that
- 36:33Speaker 1: I always loved about you was the Merged Summit. I'm
- 36:37Speaker 1: just gonna be honest with you. When I did those
- 36:40Speaker 1: I it was so many people who were there just
- 36:42Speaker 1: wanted information on how to win, how to learn, how
- 36:46Speaker 1: to how can I not make the same mistake over
- 36:48Speaker 1: and over again? And it was and it was, you know,
- 36:51Speaker 1: because she get mad at me because you know, you
- 36:54Speaker 1: you come there, you're not supposed to use any you know,
- 36:56Speaker 1: salty words, and I would use them periodically. There's just
- 36:59Speaker 1: like my mom on the side, Rashan, you know where
- 37:02Speaker 1: you at, Rashwan, you can't say that. And it was,
- 37:06Speaker 1: it was, it was, it was always. It was always
- 37:08Speaker 1: fun for me to participate because of the fact that
- 37:11Speaker 1: it was about paying it forward. And that really is
- 37:14Speaker 1: something I feel from a from a a person who
- 37:17Speaker 1: looked so far. You are changing the game, You're you're
- 37:22Speaker 1: blessing people, you're opening doors, and do you see it
- 37:26Speaker 1: there the same way I'm seeing it because of the
- 37:27Speaker 1: fact that I know you started and sometimes you can
- 37:30Speaker 1: be so deep in it and just producing it every year.
- 37:32Speaker 1: Now you put it on the road, which means there's
- 37:34Speaker 1: even more complexities to that being produced you took it
- 37:37Speaker 1: the essence this year. I've seen it in Baltimore, you
- 37:40Speaker 1: know every other years back in Los Angeles. Were originated
- 37:44Speaker 1: from am I am I saying too much? Or you
- 37:47Speaker 1: saying rash You're dead on with what what what? What
- 37:50Speaker 1: you're trying to achieve with the Merged Summit. No, you're dead.
- 37:54Speaker 1: I mean that's when you go back and you ask
- 37:57Speaker 1: what are your most proud of? You know, from a
- 38:00Speaker 1: project standpoint, I'm proud of all my projects. What makes
- 38:04Speaker 1: the clocks of suspecsional with what I said when you
- 38:06Speaker 1: talk about um my endeavors or my ventures or those
- 38:11Speaker 1: legacy moments, I think I'm really proud at the Merge
- 38:14Speaker 1: because that to your point, what it represents, what it
- 38:19Speaker 1: does for other believers, what it does for other creative people.
- 38:23Speaker 1: UM the fact that next year will be launching uh Inset,
- 38:26Speaker 1: which is Merge Extension Program, which will be a accredited
- 38:30Speaker 1: um UH Extensions College program for those who want to
- 38:37Speaker 1: take the Merge further. If it's a nine month program,
- 38:40Speaker 1: so that's an extension of Merge and it's a it's
- 38:43Speaker 1: another opportunity to give access, give platform, give opportunity. So
- 38:49Speaker 1: I am super proud of what Merge has accomplished, and
- 38:53Speaker 1: I'm looking for twenty to be even bigger. I want
- 38:57Speaker 1: to continue to provide opportunity, to continue to connect the
- 39:01Speaker 1: dots for people that really have a heart for entertainment. Well,
- 39:06Speaker 1: when you say bigger, just being nosy, what do you
- 39:09Speaker 1: say when you say you want to be bigger? Was
- 39:11Speaker 1: it a bigger facility, bigger more attendance, bigger talent to participate?
- 39:16Speaker 1: What do you mean when you say bigger? Bigger everything
- 39:20Speaker 1: I want? I need bigger. I need bigger partners to
- 39:24Speaker 1: make it bigger. I want more people to experience the opportunity,
- 39:31Speaker 1: and I want to create a bigger and better experience
- 39:37Speaker 1: for them. I really do. I need to be vision
- 39:43Speaker 1: oriented exactly what it says, visions awesome. Let's talk about
- 39:47Speaker 1: this project, live action feature film for Fox Family based
- 39:50Speaker 1: on your father's life and development called Music to My Ears.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Talk about that, but it's really based on my dad's
- 39:58Speaker 1: uh life work, what he did with the homeless community,
- 40:03Speaker 1: the homeless and underprivileged, and how he used music and
- 40:07Speaker 1: um outreach to help change their lives. And so Devon
- 40:11Speaker 1: Franklin and I are doing this together at Fox Family.
- 40:16Speaker 1: We are now at the stages of a new script
- 40:20Speaker 1: and uh, hopefully we will land this plane by the
- 40:24Speaker 1: end of the year and be ready to go into
- 40:26Speaker 1: production next year. And what what now is? Is there
- 40:30Speaker 1: going to be a time period piece and going to
- 40:32Speaker 1: send current It's it's it's it's really a uh Sister
- 40:39Speaker 1: Act needs yeah, which with angels, and it's a it's
- 40:47Speaker 1: part um live action and the other part of c
- 40:52Speaker 1: g I and it's pretty much the c g I
- 40:54Speaker 1: piece are are the angels. But it's it's definitely it's
- 40:58Speaker 1: definitely like Sister Acts with angels. Uh, and a lot
- 41:02Speaker 1: of it takes place in heaven. So it's so it's
- 41:04Speaker 1: such a fun story. That's cool. Now, let messages. Are
- 41:08Speaker 1: you when I met you, you were managing talent? Are
- 41:11Speaker 1: you managing talent with your agency now or that's something
- 41:14Speaker 1: that you just doing partnerships? No, I only do talent partnerships,
- 41:19Speaker 1: and my focus is strictly on talent partnerships, and I
- 41:23Speaker 1: will I will manage the projects that have partnered with talent,
- 41:28Speaker 1: but that traditional day to day manage this. You know,
- 41:32Speaker 1: I don't longer do that. I know, I love it,
- 41:37Speaker 1: I love it. But my friend I'm so happy you
- 41:40Speaker 1: took the time to come on the show and share
- 41:41Speaker 1: your your blessings and also share your vision. And believe
- 41:45Speaker 1: me when I said, when I spoke your name, the
- 41:48Speaker 1: compliments roared from rock and Fellow. They roared out and
- 41:51Speaker 1: they would not um, they didn't slow down. So keep
- 41:55Speaker 1: doing what you're doing and keep winning. And I appreciate
- 41:58Speaker 1: you coming on Money making conversations so awesome. Thank you
- 42:02Speaker 1: so much for shine, and I keep pushing. Remember giving
- 42:05Speaker 1: that a save the date so I can put in

- 43:05Speaker 1: Just dial Star Star one seven on your mobile phone
- 43:09Speaker 1: now dial Star Star one one seven. Money Making Conversations.
- 43:16Speaker 1: Money making conversations started a couple of years ago, just
- 43:22Speaker 1: an idea on my Facebook page. I would uh post
- 43:25Speaker 1: area once a week and people will uh come in.
- 43:28Speaker 1: I responded to come in and we go back and forth,
- 43:30Speaker 1: and I realized that two hours later I was still
- 43:33Speaker 1: talking to people on my Facebook page. And then in
- 43:36Speaker 1: seen I decided to uh do a radio show in
- 43:40Speaker 1: Houston for six weeks and uh, I guess what. Two
- 43:42Speaker 1: years later, I'm still talking in podcast world, Alexa World,
- 43:47Speaker 1: Serious x in world and tell them everybody how you
- 43:49Speaker 1: can motivate yourself, how you can win, how you can
- 43:51Speaker 1: develop a calls on an activation in your world to
- 43:56Speaker 1: be successful. But it has to start with a plan.
- 43:59Speaker 1: Everybody has a dream. Everybody has dreams or a dream
- 44:02Speaker 1: to be successful. But how do you activate that? How
- 44:04Speaker 1: do you put it in? Uh, put it in the
- 44:07Speaker 1: right put the right compass, the right direction. That's why
- 44:11Speaker 1: I bring people on my show because everybody's story is different.
- 44:13Speaker 1: And I always tell people, you know, I'm not gonna
- 44:15Speaker 1: be the next such and such, I'm not going to
- 44:16Speaker 1: be next Chris Rock or the next Steve Harvard, the
- 44:18Speaker 1: next Eddie Murphy, the next uh Steve Jobs, whatever that
- 44:22Speaker 1: person is. They did it their way, but there are
- 44:24Speaker 1: nuggets along in their path that you can use, Gems
- 44:28Speaker 1: that you can pick up to be successful, that can
- 44:31Speaker 1: motivate you, can give you that a har moment as
- 44:34Speaker 1: to why it's done this way. And one thing for sure,
- 44:38Speaker 1: you have to be willing to sacrifice your time for
- 44:42Speaker 1: your dream. If you're not consistent about it, then you
- 44:44Speaker 1: will not reach your dream. My next guest is one
- 44:47Speaker 1: of those people. Um I know because I met her
- 44:50Speaker 1: a long time ago, and we're gonna talk about that.
- 44:53Speaker 1: She's a celebrity interior designer Arthur and known trend setter
- 44:57Speaker 1: with twenty years of experience. She's a a vast range
- 45:01Speaker 1: of interior Projects, launched an online design school called design
- 45:05Speaker 1: Mecca e d U, and she has designed interiors for
- 45:08Speaker 1: celebrities such as Gabrielle Union good friend of Mine, Tsa
- 45:12Speaker 1: Campbell very good friend of mine, Tyra Banks I know
- 45:14Speaker 1: her will. She is also a lifestyle and design expert
- 45:18Speaker 1: for several TV networks such as HDTV, E Oxygen on
- 45:23Speaker 1: Network and starting in her own makeover show called Unboxed
- 45:27Speaker 1: with Nikki Chew on the Aspired Network. Please welcome to
- 45:30Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations, Nikki Chew. Hello, Hello, this is a
- 45:37Speaker 1: full circle moment. I have to tell you thank you
- 45:40Speaker 1: because right before that bio you just read me Matt Yes, yes, yes, yes,
- 45:49Speaker 1: that years that twenty years. Yes, So this is this
- 45:53Speaker 1: actually means a lot to me to sit here, you know,
- 45:57Speaker 1: listening to the bio you just read about me, and
- 46:00Speaker 1: you really knowing me in the very beginning. Yes, you know.
- 46:03Speaker 1: Let's let's let's tell everybody that I was executive boost
- 46:06Speaker 1: show for the WB I created co created with Steve Harvey. Uh.
- 46:10Speaker 1: It was called Mobile Home Disasters where we will go
- 46:13Speaker 1: in and to mobile homes and make over, make them over.
- 46:17Speaker 1: And she was one of the designers that was higher
- 46:20Speaker 1: I mean, you know, first of all, just uh, it's
- 46:24Speaker 1: it's a it's a it's a project, a pilot, so
- 46:26Speaker 1: you don't have ideas, so you have to bring in
- 46:28Speaker 1: people who are creative and renegade eighty three aid was
- 46:31Speaker 1: the name of the production company who now does Neked
- 46:34Speaker 1: and Afraid. If he wasn't negative afraid, that's renegade at
- 46:38Speaker 1: three and uh and so and and she was one
- 46:42Speaker 1: thing I loved about her. She had an opinion and
- 46:44Speaker 1: she held to it. Yes, yeah, and you know, and
- 46:50Speaker 1: I'm one of those people who are okay, really really
- 46:53Speaker 1: really I don't even know her. I don't know her,
- 46:55Speaker 1: and and and and and and that was a beauty
- 46:58Speaker 1: of that. And then so I look at the six
- 47:00Speaker 1: s's that you had coming from mobile home disaster. Air
- 47:04Speaker 1: Bill Vall was to host good ratings on the w
- 47:07Speaker 1: B Good Time and then it went on just think
- 47:10Speaker 1: to see the Country Music Television Network afterwards. But a
- 47:14Speaker 1: great thing about it was that I met you. You
- 47:17Speaker 1: you had a good concept of what you wanted to do.
- 47:20Speaker 1: Tell us what was running to your mind at that
- 47:22Speaker 1: stage before we started moving forward to what you've accomplished
- 47:25Speaker 1: over the years. Well, first of all, anybody tells you
- 47:29Speaker 1: that you're gonna make over mobile homes, you know, as
- 47:33Speaker 1: a designer, that is on the list of what you'd
- 47:36Speaker 1: love to do. I'm not sure where you would find that.
- 47:40Speaker 1: So there was a lot of things that ran through
- 47:43Speaker 1: my head as it related to that. But as a designer,
- 47:46Speaker 1: the one thing that I absolutely love is a challenge,
- 47:50Speaker 1: and especially when it comes to a design challenge. So
- 47:53Speaker 1: that was actually a really exciting time because, first of all,
- 47:57Speaker 1: I was just getting into television and and I was
- 48:01Speaker 1: challenged to design a makeover for these mobile homes and
- 48:05Speaker 1: host with a comedian. So the concept was really original,
- 48:10Speaker 1: it was fresh, it was new, it was totally different
- 48:12Speaker 1: than what you would typically see on h G, t
- 48:14Speaker 1: V or any of those channels. So you know, I
- 48:17Speaker 1: was with it and I really enjoyed it. It was
- 48:20Speaker 1: a lot of work, you know, and nobody really realizes
- 48:24Speaker 1: when you watch these television shows what happens, what you
- 48:28Speaker 1: see before your eyes, and the five days you have
- 48:30Speaker 1: to to get it done. I mean you're up two hours,
- 48:36Speaker 1: really up trying to make this happen for the TV
- 48:40Speaker 1: world versus reality of what really transpires in the design world.
- 48:44Speaker 1: And that's where the challenges that people say, I want
- 48:48Speaker 1: to be on TV, I want to be a designer.
- 48:50Speaker 1: But what you don't know is that you're about to
- 48:52Speaker 1: be awake for the next three days. I forgot about
- 48:55Speaker 1: that part because we were it was like it was
- 48:57Speaker 1: a four o'clock in the morning and it was we
- 49:00Speaker 1: were wide of way, you know, because you have to
- 49:01Speaker 1: pick tile down, walls down, because we were making over
- 49:05Speaker 1: mobile homes, and these mobile homes were not good looking
- 49:08Speaker 1: at mobile homes, and we had to go in there
- 49:12Speaker 1: and knock out walls and basically retail stuff. And then
- 49:16Speaker 1: I also had to do the exterior, so we had
- 49:18Speaker 1: to do a little landscape and so where they came up,
- 49:20Speaker 1: it looked pretty and then they walked in and oh
- 49:23Speaker 1: my god. Then you have to show them before pictures,
- 49:25Speaker 1: after pictures called mobile home disaster. And uh, I went
- 49:28Speaker 1: my way and became famous, you know, and she went
- 49:32Speaker 1: her way and UH became famous, and UH working with
- 49:36Speaker 1: celebrities like Gabrielle Union and t J Campbell, tire but
- 49:39Speaker 1: all great people and other celebrities, just three of them,
- 49:42Speaker 1: just naming. Then when I got a lot, I don't
- 49:44Speaker 1: have that much time on my show. Another way. The
- 49:46Speaker 1: thing I wanted to talk about first is the the
- 49:48Speaker 1: online design school called design that e DU That really
- 49:52Speaker 1: excites me. I have a daughter, she's a she's in UM.
- 49:56Speaker 1: She said, she's doing gaming and design, doing designs right
- 49:58Speaker 1: now and designs classes and all these different classes. So
- 50:02Speaker 1: when I this is something I would love for her
- 50:04Speaker 1: just to do because I think it's really cool. So
- 50:06Speaker 1: tell us what exactly is going on with design Mecca Etiu.
- 50:10Speaker 1: Design Mecca ETI you UM stemmed from an amazing amount
- 50:16Speaker 1: of emails, d M, s M Facebook messages from women
- 50:22Speaker 1: all ages, from young girls to women in their sixties
- 50:26Speaker 1: that would tell me their story that they absolutely loved design.
- 50:31Speaker 1: It was something they wanted to do, they were scared
- 50:33Speaker 1: to get into it. Where young girls who had gone
- 50:36Speaker 1: to college and they graduated and they were trying to
- 50:38Speaker 1: get into the design world and they just haven't had
- 50:41Speaker 1: any success. And majority these women were asking me to
- 50:45Speaker 1: mentor them, to teach them everything that I knew. How
- 50:49Speaker 1: did I get to where I was? How did I
- 50:51Speaker 1: get ten licensing deals in home to court? How did
- 50:55Speaker 1: I get on a TV show? How did I? And
- 50:57Speaker 1: and I just couldn't possibly reach everybody and Design Mecca
- 51:04Speaker 1: came from that. I need to put together a twelve
- 51:08Speaker 1: module course and curriculum that really teaches people things that
- 51:15Speaker 1: you don't learn at school. You know, you don't have
- 51:19Speaker 1: to take that traditional four year course at school and
- 51:23Speaker 1: pay all those tuition fees if you have a talent.
- 51:27Speaker 1: I didn't go to school to be an interior designer.
- 51:29Speaker 1: I went to school to be a graphic designer. Yes,
- 51:33Speaker 1: every single day I use my graphic design abilities. I'm
- 51:36Speaker 1: not saying don't go to school, but design Mecca e
- 51:40Speaker 1: du is that additional schooling that you need to get
- 51:43Speaker 1: that little extra thing to push you a little further
- 51:48Speaker 1: in the I didn't know that. Oh now I'm learning
- 51:52Speaker 1: from experts in the field that I want to be in,
- 51:56Speaker 1: and the experts are gonna tell me those little nuances
- 51:59Speaker 1: that the users didn't teach because they're teaching you the groundwork, right. So,
- 52:04Speaker 1: how do you run the business? How do you engage
- 52:06Speaker 1: with clients? What happens when you have a difficult client?
- 52:09Speaker 1: How do you discern between a client's personality type and
- 52:13Speaker 1: how you're going to sell to them or pitch to them.
- 52:16Speaker 1: What happens if I have some ordering miss ups? How
- 52:19Speaker 1: do I brand myself as a designer in today's society.
- 52:23Speaker 1: All of these things that you need to learn to
- 52:26Speaker 1: develop and create an interior design brand is what you
- 52:29Speaker 1: will learn with Design Mecha et You. And the bigger
- 52:33Speaker 1: question for a lot of designers is how do I
- 52:36Speaker 1: now have my own homeline? Did you know that you
- 52:40Speaker 1: could get licensing deals or did you know you could
- 52:42Speaker 1: started on your own? You know, a lot of people
- 52:45Speaker 1: just don't even know where to begin. So that's what
- 52:49Speaker 1: we're teaching. I'm talking to Nikki Chew, star of the
- 52:52Speaker 1: show Unboxed. He is the executive producer and creator is
- 52:56Speaker 1: the second season of Inspired Network Wrap us up, tell

- 53:40Speaker 1: makeovers and transformations are huge. There's some of my favorite actually, um,
- 53:45Speaker 1: so I I am really excited, and we air tonight,

- 54:10Speaker 1: you know, I know that this is about relationships, and
- 54:12Speaker 1: this is a classic example of relationship that you've created
- 54:16Speaker 1: long time ago. This panoff again in this moment with
- 54:18Speaker 1: this interview and knowing that I am a fan and
- 54:21Speaker 1: I will be supporting you even more so because we've
- 54:23Speaker 1: now talked and reconnected. But congratulations, and and every Tuesday,
- 54:27Speaker 1: I gotta let everybody know to watch your show. Okay, yeah,
- 54:30Speaker 1: and be sure to follow me Nikki Chew Home on Instagram.
- 54:33Speaker 1: I have a lot of cool updates, tips and tricks
- 54:37Speaker 1: for design okay, thank you very much. I appreciate you.
- 54:42Speaker 1: Restrictions may apply, Plans and cost coverage may very called
- 54:44Speaker 1: Protected my Car for details. In these hard economic times,
- 54:47Speaker 1: you've got to do whatever you can to save money.
