- 0:00Hey guys, and welcome back to another episode of Aligned and
- 0:03Thriving for Teachers. This one's only a short one, but
- 0:08this episode is one straight from the heart.
- 0:11We're talking about protecting your energy and healing from
- 0:14those toxic environments and learning how to fill your own
- 0:17cup so that you're not constantly pouring from an empty
- 0:20one. And look, I am not here to
- 0:23preach to you from a pedestal. I have lived this one.
- 0:28I've said things that I wish I could take back.
- 0:30I've been on the receiving end of all of that hurt too.
- 0:33And I've seen people in my life transform, but only because they
- 0:38did the work. So this episode is about growth,
- 0:42it's about healing and it's about you.
- 0:46Let's start with the truth bomb. You can't unsay words.
- 0:51You can apologise, you can try and repair the damage, but once
- 0:56those words are out, they're out.
- 0:59And how many times have we had to stop and say that to our own
- 1:03students? In fact, I'm pretty sure I've
- 1:05said it to my own kids multiple times.
- 1:09Yes, you can say sorry for all of those things you've just
- 1:11said. Yes, I know you didn't mean
- 1:13them, but you actually can't take those words back.
- 1:16They're not like cartoon fictional letters that come out
- 1:19of your mouth and you can eat them back up and they disappear.
- 1:22Once they're out, they're out and they do leave damage, OK,
- 1:27but it's our choice whether we let them 'cause damage to
- 1:31ourselves or the same as the other person chooses to forgive
- 1:34you or allows the damage to occur.
- 1:38Then you've got toxic energy, whether it's from others or
- 1:41yourself. It's heavy, it lingers, and it
- 1:44can really dim your light. And if you haven't already
- 1:47listened to the Toxic Energy Self Care Series podcast
- 1:51episode, go back and listen to that one first and then come
- 1:54back to this. But here's the hope, the freedom
- 1:58that you don't have to stay stuck in it.
- 2:03It's a choice. You can shift, you can heal, you
- 2:07can become the person who lifts the room just by walking in.
- 2:12And that's what I want to be. I'm working on becoming that
- 2:16person, the one with magnetic, grounded, loving energy.
- 2:20Not because life is perfect, oh, no way.
- 2:24My life is by far nowhere near like it's on a scale.
- 2:30It's not near perfect, no, no, but because I've done lots of
- 2:35internal work on myself, and babe, that work is messy, hard,
- 2:40but absolutely freeing to me. My life is good where we're at.
- 2:45And to other people, they might have the perception that my life
- 2:48looks like it's perfect. That's great that that's the
- 2:51view that you see. But that's taken a lot of work
- 2:55from our end to get where we are today.
- 2:58And that's what leads me into this part, that you can't
- 3:02outsource your healing so nobody else can fix.
- 3:07You get that straight. Not your partner, not your best
- 3:11friend, not even your workplace, not even changing workplaces.
- 3:16Yes, therapy is incredible. Coaches, mentors, healers,
- 3:22they're all amazing, but you still have to walk through the
- 3:26line of fire and you have to change you.
- 3:30You can access those resources to support you in your change,
- 3:34but you're the one who has to change you.
- 3:37So healing is not a one time thing, it's a lifelong journey.
- 3:41I'm still learning, I'm still growing and I'm still making
- 3:45mistakes and coming back to reflect on things and myself.
- 3:49So wherever you're at today, know this.
- 3:52You are not behind, you're just beginning again and again and
- 3:57again because it's a process. So some self care tools from the
- 4:03heart if you ignore the little murmur in the background.
- 4:07My lovely dog Nyla who loves to star on this show is currently
- 4:10squished sitting behind me in her little bubble because that
- 4:14is part of herself care as a dog.
- 4:17She likes to be close to people, she likes to have company.
- 4:20So yes, being squished behind me on the chair is her little space
- 4:24of I need love and attention. So that is her there.
- 4:27So the little groans and little Jingle noises, that's Nyla being
- 4:31the star of the show. So I just thought I'd better
- 4:33name that out because I can't edit that out.
- 4:35I'm not that good. OK, you will get the real and
- 4:39the raw here. I'm doing the very best I can.
- 4:42So back to the back to the episode, back on topic because I
- 4:45I drifted off there for a moment, but there you go.
- 4:48So coming back, self care tools. Yeah, that's what I was up to.
- 4:51Self care tools from the heart. So let me share the tools that I
- 4:55use every single day, especially when you've been in that space
- 4:58of overwhelm or emotional exhaustion.
- 5:01And I know I've shared these with you before, but just so you
- 5:04haven't forgotten, I have my morning mantra.
- 5:07So saying something loving to yourself, the first thing,
- 5:09something like I am safe, I trust the process, I'm full of
- 5:14calm, grounded energy. You can write it, you can say
- 5:17it, you can stick it to the mirror.
- 5:19You're letting it anchor your day.
- 5:22So you choose something that you can anchor yourself, your mind
- 5:26onto. That's a positive thing to start
- 5:28the day. You, if you have it stuck to
- 5:30your mirror, There's lots of companies like the I am, I think
- 5:33it's called company that make mirror stickers that you can
- 5:35stick on the mirror. They have them for kids as well.
- 5:38So when they wake up, they can go read it and say, oh, I am
- 5:41beautiful, I am safe, I am happy.
- 5:44Like all of those things. You're just picking something to
- 5:46help remind yourself of the positive intention for your day.
- 5:51Then you might have some grounding type practise.
- 5:54So this is me. I've done my morning mantra
- 5:57might do some grounding, which is and you can try this now.
- 6:01So you put one hand on your heart and one on your belly and
- 6:04you have your feet flat on the floor.
- 6:07So hand on your heart, hand on your belly, and your feet fat
- 6:12flat on the floor. Then you breathe in through your
- 6:16nose for three and out through your mouth for three.
- 6:24You can imagine something here, maybe a wave of water running
- 6:27through you, collecting all of the tension in your body, the
- 6:33toxic energy, the pressure, and have it flowing out as you
- 6:39exhale. Then you can pause and ask
- 6:44yourself, how am I feeling now? And that's just one grounding
- 6:51technique that's really short, sharp and easy.
- 6:53Because breathing is proven to help regulate your nervous
- 6:58system. It starts to force your body to
- 7:01slow down and self regulate. It's trauma informed self care.
- 7:05It's not fluffy stuff. It's real nervous system
- 7:07support. So a nice and simple way to
- 7:10ground yourself. Then you're filling your cup
- 7:13first. So have you heard the same?
- 7:15You can't pour from an empty cup?
- 7:17I'm pretty sure I've told you quite a few times.
- 7:20I say fill your cup so high that it's overflowing.
- 7:25That way helping others doesn't drain you, it flows on from your
- 7:29abundance because you have spent time on you.
- 7:31You've focused on yourself first you are overflowing.
- 7:34You can then support other people.
- 7:36OK, what fills you up? What makes you feel alive, like
- 7:42myself, like your integrity? Things that make you you.
- 7:49It might be, again, like me getting your hair done in peace
- 7:55with no children climbing on you.
- 7:57Or maybe no talk about school. Having a hot coffee alone.
- 8:03Could be painting, journaling, walking by water or on the beach
- 8:09laughing with those friends who actually get you.
- 8:13You know the ones. Could be listening to music
- 8:16while you're subtly ignoring the other 47 open school tabs on
- 8:19your laptop. Not talking from experiencing,
- 8:23but make your list, write it down and start filling your cup
- 8:28first. You might also have to ask
- 8:31yourself, what have you given up that used to feed you?
- 8:34What is it that you miss? What is it that you loved doing
- 8:37and you don't do it anymore? You need to do that again
- 8:40because you're focusing on you. You need to make time for you.
- 8:43You haven't got that through this self care series.
- 8:46Please get that message now. Make time for yourself because
- 8:49self care is not selfish, OK? You deserve joy.
- 8:54You deserve to feel human again. You need to make time for those
- 8:58things on purpose, not when you crash.
- 9:03It's preventative. OK, so here's your challenge.
- 9:09If you haven't already done it, you're going to do it now.
- 9:11You're going to write down 10 things that make you feel good
- 9:15and star some of the ones that are quick and easy.
- 9:18That could be under 10 minutes, and then pick 1 today.
- 9:23Even if it's just 5 minutes, you're going to pick 1 today and
- 9:26you're going to go do that for you, for yourself.
- 9:30Keep that list in your journal, your planner, put it on your
- 9:32phone as a note. If you've got Google Android,
- 9:37Google on your Android, that makes sense.
- 9:40There's apps for that. There's a Keep note app that one
- 9:43can send you little reminders. You can schedule it to be every
- 9:46day and you can just go, oh, I need to go do that now and spend
- 9:49that time on you. So make sure you are pulling it
- 9:54out. When the world starts getting
- 9:55heavy, you can start chipping away at some of those things and
- 9:58focus on you. So commit to 1:00 every day to
- 10:02start filling your cup, not out of your obligation, but out of
- 10:05love for yourself. So again, listen to all of the
- 10:12episodes for the Self Care series.
- 10:14All the messages are pretty similar in the fact that you are
- 10:18looking after you first. OK, so here's what I really want
- 10:23you to remember. Protect your energy.
- 10:27Use all the tools, especially the ones I've given you.
- 10:31Be gentle with yourself, but also be honest with yourself.
- 10:35What do you need to do to heal, to shift, to grow?
- 10:39You are not too far gone. If you're listening to this.
- 10:43You're not too far gone. You're trying to make a change.
- 10:47You're not behind. You're becoming.
- 10:51You are doing the work, and I see you.
- 10:54Let's keep becoming the kind of people who radiate love and
- 10:58strength because we are walking our own journey with grace.
- 11:04Feel free to DM me your list or tag me if this hits home.
- 11:08And stay tuned for another episode in our wonderful self
- 11:12care series. Go back through, listen to them
- 11:14again. Remind yourself that you are
- 11:16putting you first because you are important.
- 11:19Please don't forget that. So until next time, stay
- 11:23aligned, keep thriving, and I'll talk to you again soon.
- 11:28Bye, guys.
