- 0:00Hello and welcome to Connecting the Dots. I'm
- 0:02Alex. And I'm Morgan. Thanks for tuning in. It
- 0:04is Tuesday, August 19th, 2025. Hope you're having
- 0:07a good start to your day. Absolutely. Let's quickly
- 0:10check in on that weather. Nationally, there are
- 0:12tropical storm and storm surge watches up for
- 0:15the North Carolina Outer Banks. Looks like conditions
- 0:18could get dicey there late Wednesday. Yeah. And
- 0:20Hurricane Aaron is still out there kicking up
- 0:22some dangerous surf and rip currents along the
- 0:24East Coast beaches. Stay safe out there, folks.
- 0:27Definitely. And Closer to home for many, the
- 0:30southern plains and Mississippi Valley are dealing
- 0:32with some really intense heat. Hot to extremely
- 0:35hot temperatures expected there. Meanwhile, here
- 0:38in sunny Sacramento, looking pretty good. Clear
- 0:41skies, high of 91 degrees today. Can't complain
- 0:44too much. Nice. All right, quick market minute
- 0:47for you. The Dow Jones saw a positive bump yesterday,
- 0:49up about 95 points. That's 0 .21%. It's actually
- 0:53up almost 2 % for the week. The S &P 500, though,
- 0:56dipped just a tiny bit yesterday, down 0 .10%,
- 0:59but still managed a weekly gain of about 0 .78%.
- 1:02And Bitcoin? Well, it's having a bit of a rough
- 1:06patch, down about 1 % daily and over 4 % for
- 1:09the week. Oof. Okay, shifting gears to some happier
- 1:13news, especially for baseball fans around here.
- 1:15Oh, yeah. The San Francisco Giants. They pulled
- 1:18off a win against the Padres yesterday, August
- 1:2118th. Nice. What was the score? Four to three.
- 1:24A close one. Shout out to Robbie Ray for getting
- 1:26the win. Good stuff. Any standouts? Haley Ramos
- 1:28had a great game, two for five with a home run.
- 1:31Love to see it. Awesome. Always good when the
- 1:33Giants win. Absolutely. OK, so today on the show,
- 1:36we're diving into some major tech news. We're
- 1:38going to connect the dots between these updates
- 1:40and how they might actually affect your life,
- 1:43whether you're working, managing family stuff,
- 1:45or running a business. Yeah, lots happening,
- 1:48particularly from NVIDIA. We'll be looking at
- 1:49their internal Morningstar report for the key
- 1:52details. All right, let's jump into our first
- 1:53big story from the Morningstar that's got everyone
- 1:56talking. NVIDIA's GeForce N -NOW. their game
- 1:59streaming service. It's getting a pretty massive
- 2:02upgrade. That's right. Starting in September,
- 2:04the ultimate tier, that's the $20 month one,
- 2:08is getting a serious boost with new RTX 5080
- 2:11class GPUs powering the servers. And the kicker
- 2:14is no price increase, right? Still 20 bucks.
- 2:18Exactly. No price hike, which is pretty amazing
- 2:20considering the performance leap we're talking
- 2:22about. So what does this actually mean for someone
- 2:25using this service? Well, visually, it's going
- 2:27to be stunning. You'll be able to stream games
- 2:30at up to 5K resolution at 120 frames per second.
- 2:33Wow, 5K 120? Yeah. Or? Or if you prefer raw speed,
- 2:37say for competitive shooters, you can go 1080p
- 2:40at a crazy 320 frames per second. 320 FPS, that's...
- 2:44That's faster than most high -end monitors can
- 2:47even display. Right, it's incredibly smooth,
- 2:49incredibly detailed, we're talking gameplay that
- 2:51rivals, and honestly probably surpasses a lot
- 2:54of very expensive local gaming PCs. So the performance
- 2:57jump is legit, then? Oh, absolutely. These new
- 2:59servers are apparently up to 2 .8 times faster
- 3:01than the older RTX 4080 systems they're replacing.
- 3:042 .8 times? A big part of it is improvements
- 3:07in their AI stuff, specifically frame generation.
- 3:10It's now doing 4x the work, compared to 2x on
- 3:13the 4080s. We're talking like, 62 teraflops of
- 3:17compute - huge numbers. Okay, so the power is
- 3:20there. But cloud gaming sometimes struggles with,
- 3:22like, the picture quality, right? Colors looking
- 3:24washed out, maybe a bit blurry. Yeah, that's
- 3:26always been the Achilles heel. But Nvidia seems
- 3:29to be tackling that head -on with something they're
- 3:31calling Cinematic Quality Streaming, or CQS.
- 3:35CQS. Okay, what does that do? Well, it uses a
- 3:37few key technologies. First, YUV 4 .4 .4 Chroma
- 3:41subsampling. Basically, it makes sure all the
- 3:44color information for every pixel gets through
- 3:46accurately. No more washed out look. OK, better
- 3:49colors. What else? It also uses the AV1 codec.
- 3:51That's a newer, really efficient video compression
- 3:53format so you get smoother video with less data.
- 3:56Plus, there's AI video filtering to clean up
- 3:58any blocky artifacts you might sometimes see
- 4:01in streams. Interesting. And I saw something
- 4:03about DPI optimization. Right, it can automatically
- 4:07adjust the stream to match your screen's DPI,
- 4:10dots per inch. That's super helpful on laptops
- 4:12with those really sharp, high -res screens, so
- 4:15text and UI elements don't look fuzzy. Gotcha.
- 4:19Now, is there a catch? Like, internet requirements?
- 4:21Oh, yeah, there is. To get the absolute best
- 4:24out of CQS, you'll need a pretty beefy connection.
- 4:27The stream can go up to 100 megabits per second.
- 4:30100 megabits. OK, so ideally, you'd want, what,
- 4:33a gigabit connection? Pretty much. A gigabit
- 4:35or faster connection is ideal. If you're on a
- 4:38slower plan or have data caps, you might not
- 4:40get the full CQS experience. It's definitely
- 4:43aimed at the high end of internet speeds. Something
- 4:45to keep in mind. But if you do have the bandwidth,
- 4:47what kind of games can you play with this new
- 4:49power? Good list already lined up for launch.
- 4:52Think Doom, The Dark Ages, Indiana Jones and
- 4:54The Great Circle, Cyberpunk 2077 Flight Simulator.
- 4:58Wow, some heavy hitters there. Yeah. And they've
- 5:00mentioned upcoming stuff, too, like Borderlands
- 5:024, the next Call of Outer Worlds 2, all set to
- 5:06leverage these 5080s. So stepping back a bit,
- 5:09what's the bigger picture here? Why does this
- 5:11matter beyond just hardcore gamers? Well, I think
- 5:14it really democratizes high -end gaming. You
- 5:16don't need to spend thousands on a gaming rig
- 5:19anymore. You can play these cutting edge, visually
- 5:22demanding AAA games on a regular laptop, a handheld,
- 5:26even your TV, as long as you have that good internet
- 5:29and the subscription. It makes that top -tier
- 5:32experience much more accessible. Exactly. And
- 5:35compared to how much streaming TV services cost
- 5:38these days, $20 a month for this kind of power,
- 5:41it actually seems pretty competitive. Yeah, that's
- 5:43a fair point. I remember lugging a giant desktop
- 5:45tower to college just to play games. Now you
- 5:48could just take a thin laptop on vacation and
- 5:50get an even better experience. No more clunky
- 5:52rigs for trips. Precisely. Now, speaking of upgrades,
- 5:56NVIDIA isn't just juicing up GeForce and W. They're
- 5:58also giving their main software for PC users
- 6:01a pretty big overhaul. Ah, right, the NVIDIA
- 6:04app. They launched that beta a while back, didn't
- 6:05they? Yeah. What's new there? They're basically
- 6:07trying to pull everything together. You know
- 6:09how settings used to be scattered between the
- 6:11GeForce Experience app and the old -school NVIDIA
- 6:14control panel? Oh yeah, that could be annoying.
- 6:16Well, they're consolidating more of that into
- 6:18the new single NVIDIA app. The goal is user convenience,
- 6:22making things simpler. So what are the key changes?
- 6:25OK, the big one, I think, is the global DLSS
- 6:28override. DLSS, that's the AI upscaling thing,
- 6:31right? Boosts frame rates? Exactly. Deep learning,
- 6:35super sampling. Before, you usually had to go
- 6:37into each game's settings menu and turn DLSS
- 6:40on, pick your quality mode, et cetera. Right,
- 6:43game by game. Now you can just set a global preference
- 6:46in the NVIDIA app, like always use DLSS quality
- 6:49mode if available, and it'll just apply automatically
- 6:51to all supported games. There's even an overlay
- 6:53to show you it's working. Oh, that's actually
- 6:55really handy. Less fiddling, more playing. That's
- 6:58the idea. And they're pulling more of those classic
- 7:00control panel settings into the app, too. Things
- 7:02like anisotropic filtering, anti -aliasing, ambient
- 7:07occlusion. stuff you might tweak for older games.
- 7:10So less digging through menus for those specific
- 7:13settings. Exactly. Even the setup tool for NVIDIA
- 7:15surround, you know, for multiple monitors is
- 7:18being integrated, just making it a one -stop
- 7:20shop. OK, that sounds genuinely useful. What
- 7:24else? There's also news about smooth motion.
- 7:26Remember that feature? It was supposed to be
- 7:28only for the new RTX 50 series GPUs. Yeah, kind
- 7:32of like an AI frame interpolation thing. Right.
- 7:35It basically uses AI to insert extra frames,
- 7:38making games feel smoother, even if they don't
- 7:40natively support DLSS frame generation. It can
- 7:43essentially double the perceived frame rate.
- 7:45So like making a 3040X game feel like 60 foopies.
- 7:49That's the goal. The big news is it's not just
- 7:52for the 50 series anymore. They're bringing it
- 7:54to all RTX 40 series owners, too, via driver
- 7:57update. Oh, wow. That's a big deal for current
- 7:59owners, especially since Nvidia seems to be shifting
- 8:01focus to the 50 series, maybe even stopping production
- 8:04on some 40 series cards. That's the report. Yeah.
- 8:07So making the software better for existing 40
- 8:09series owners is definitely a good move. It adds
- 8:11value to the cards people already have. Good
- 8:13point. Anything else on this app update? Just
- 8:15a quick note. Their AI assistant, Project G -Assist,
- 8:19is apparently getting more efficient, uses about
- 8:2140 % less memory, responds faster, so little
- 8:24tweaks there too. When can people get these updates?
- 8:27The beta app gets updated today, August 19th,
- 8:29and the general public release is planned for
- 8:32next week. So connecting the dots here, this
- 8:35really just streamlines the PC gaming experience,
- 8:37doesn't it? Makes it easier for everyone, not
- 8:40just tech experts, to get good performance. Totally.
- 8:43Less hassle, easier optimization. It's about
- 8:46making the tech work for you, rather than you
- 8:49having to work the tech. Okay, interesting stuff
- 8:51on the software side. Now you mentioned Nvidia
- 8:53isn't done with GeForce NW. There's another big
- 8:56update there. Yeah, and this one might be even
- 8:58more impactful in the long run. It's a new feature
- 9:01called Install to Play. Install to Play, what
- 9:03does that mean? Okay, so currently with GeForce
- 9:06and W, you can only stream games that Nvidia
- 9:09has specifically onboarded and pre -installed
- 9:12on their servers, right? Right, there's a curated
- 9:14library. This new feature basically blows that
- 9:17wide open. It allows you to install games yourself
- 9:20directly onto cloud storage linked to your GeForce
- 9:23and Now account. Whoa. So you're not limited
- 9:26to their list anymore? Not entirely. There's
- 9:28a condition. The game needs to have opted into
- 9:32Valve's Steam Cloud play system. But Nvidia says
- 9:36this immediately adds thousands of compatible
- 9:38titles. Thousands. How many are you talking?
- 9:40They claim it will effectively double the existing
- 9:42library. It goes from about 2 ,300 pre -installed
- 9:46games to over 4 ,500 total playable games. It's
- 9:49huge. doubling the library instantly. Yeah, it's
- 9:52a massive expansion. And it also means you can
- 9:54potentially play games or even demos the day
- 9:56they release without waiting for NVIDIA to add
- 9:59them officially. Just install it yourself. OK,
- 10:01but how does the install part work? Do you have
- 10:03to download it every time you play? Good question.
- 10:06Initially, yes, you'll likely need to download
- 10:08the game for each session, kind of like installing
- 10:10it fresh. However... There's a catch, or rather
- 10:12an option. Exactly. They're offering persistent
- 10:15cloud storage. Ultimate and performance tier
- 10:17members get 100GB for free to start. 100GB free.
- 10:21OK. And if you need more, you can pay for upgrades.
- 10:24It's like $299 a month for 200GB, $499 for 500GB,
- 10:27or $799 for a full terabyte. So you can pay a
- 10:30bit extra to keep your installed games ready
- 10:32to launch instantly, just like on a local drive.
- 10:35Pretty much. It's like having your own personal
- 10:37gaming hard drive sitting in NVIDIA's cloud data
- 10:40center, ready to go. That really changes the
- 10:42game for cloud streaming. What about devices?
- 10:45Does this help? People using, say, a Steam Deck?
- 10:49Oh, absolutely. Nvidia specifically highlighted
- 10:51this. They have a new native GeForce End Now
- 10:54W app for the Steam Deck, which now supports
- 10:57up to 95p streaming, by the way. 95p on the Deck
- 11:00Nice. And with install -to -play, Steam Deck
- 11:03users can access way more of their Steam library,
- 11:05plus games from other stores like Xbox, PC Game
- 11:08Pass, Epic Games, GOG, all streamed through GeForce
- 11:11End Now W. So it helps bypass the deck's own
- 11:14hardware limits for really demanding games. Exactly.
- 11:17And it saves battery life, too. They're saying
- 11:19four or five hours of streaming gameplay versus
- 11:21maybe two hours running a heavy game natively.
- 11:23That's a significant difference for a handheld,
- 11:25for sure. And it's not just the deck. The Mac
- 11:28client gets these upgrades, too. And they mentioned
- 11:314K streaming coming to LG OLED monitors and TVs.
- 11:35It's broadening access everywhere. OK, one more
- 11:37thing I saw mention something about Discord.
- 11:39Right. A new partnership with Epic Games and
- 11:42Discord. This is pretty clever. What's the deal?
- 11:44For a limited time, Discord users will be able
- 11:47to launch and play Fortnite directly within the
- 11:50Discord app, streamed via GeForce and now W.
- 11:54Wait, directly in Discord without downloading
- 11:56Fortnite or even having a GeForce and W account?
- 11:59That's what they're saying. No download, no GeForce
- 12:01and W membership needed for this trial. It's
- 12:04a way to let potentially hundreds of millions
- 12:06of Discord users just click and try a high profile
- 12:09game instantly. Wow. That's frictionless gaming
- 12:12right there. Super easy way to get people to
- 12:14try cloud gaming. Exactly. It removes almost
- 12:16every barrier. So connecting all these dots,
- 12:19the RTX 5080 upgrade, the app simplification,
- 12:22and now this install -to -play feature. It really
- 12:24feels like Nvidia is trying to make high -end
- 12:26gaming accessible to almost anyone, anywhere.
- 12:29That seems to be the core strategy. Break down
- 12:31the barriers. You don't need the $2 ,000 PC.
- 12:34You don't need to wait for games to be curated.
- 12:36You can access your libraries easily across the
- 12:39different devices. It really democratizes things.
- 12:41Whether you're a professional just wanting to
- 12:43unwind, a student on a budget, or a family looking
- 12:45for entertainment without buying multiple consoles
- 12:47or PCs. Yeah, the idea of having your whole Steam
- 12:50library or Game Pass library just available wherever
- 12:53you have a good connection. That's a really compelling
- 12:56vision. Less focus on owning the hard more focused
- 12:59on accessing the experience. It definitely feels
- 13:02like a major shift. A powerful move towards the
- 13:04cloud, making these cutting -edge experiences
- 13:06much more mainstream. All right, that pretty
- 13:09much wraps up our look at today's big tech stories.
- 13:12We started with that huge GeForce Ennobu upgrade
- 13:15RTX 5080 power coming to the cloud without a
- 13:18price hike. Then we looked at the Nvidia app
- 13:21updates, making things simpler for PC gamers
- 13:23with global DLSS and bringing smooth motion to
- 13:26more cards. Finally, that potentially revolutionary
- 13:29install -to -play feature for GeForce Now W set
- 13:32to massively expand its game library and make
- 13:36accessing your games easier than ever. Yeah,
- 13:40all these pieces together really show how technology,
- 13:43especially cloud tech, is becoming more accessible,
- 13:46more convenient, and frankly more powerful for
- 13:49everyone, gamers, professionals, casual users
- 13:51alike. It certainly makes you wonder about the
- 13:53future, doesn't it? Is owning that high -end
- 13:55local hardware going to become less and less
- 13:57necessary? It's a fascinating question, and the
- 14:00trend seems to be pointing in that direction,
- 14:02at least as an option for many people. We'll
- 14:04definitely keep watching it. We absolutely will.
- 14:06Thanks so much for tuning in today. We're here
