- 0:05Alan Carroll: Hello, everybody. Welcome back to the mindful new
- 0:10podcast. And today, we have a guest definitely a healer, who
- 0:19has spent 18 years practicing chiropractic work, healing work,
- 0:27physical bodies. And her journey she shares with us her
- 0:37experiences, the ups, the downs, which led her down the path, the
- 0:44journey into mindfulness. And she even wrote a wonderful book
- 0:50called my journey to grace. And our conversations today, she
- 0:56touched on many wonderful golden nuggets. And so I'm excited to
- 1:04be able to have her share with you some of the clear wisdom of
- 1:11the ancients of the sages of India, and Buddhism. Very, very
- 1:17clear. So I'm excited to have you. Be with us today, and
- 1:22listen to us as we journey together down the path of
- 1:26mindfulness with Dr. Lin. Kerry. Thank you. Good afternoon. Good
- 1:37afternoon, Lynne. Welcome to the mindful you podcast. How are you
- 1:42today?
- 1:43Dr. Lynn Carey: I'm great. Alan, how are you today? Thanks for
- 1:45having me.
- 1:46Alan Carroll: Well, it's it's exciting to have people like
- 1:50yourself, who I would say are on the healing path. Because my
- 1:56mindful you is really about using the techniques and and
- 2:02areas in mindfulness in order to call it heal, calm, relax the
- 2:07energy, so you can become present in the moment. And you
- 2:12have your story, you have your background, you have your
- 2:15journey. So I'd like you to just open it up by sharing a little
- 2:19bit of your background to create a context so my audience can
- 2:24understand Dr. Lynn carry.
- 2:29Dr. Lynn Carey: So I guess my whole life, I question that
- 2:31there had to be more to life than what I was being shown. And
- 2:35when I was 14, I was diagnosed with scoliosis, which is
- 2:38curvature of the spine. And later on, I found out that, you
- 2:43know, my spine was in an S shaped, I was being pulled in
- 2:45two directions. And that's exactly the emotional component
- 2:48behind scoliosis, you're feel like you're pulled in two
- 2:50directions. And I had an inner knowing that there had to be
- 2:54something more to life, but yet my family and teachers religion
- 2:58was telling me this is the way it is. So I think there was
- 3:01always an internal conflict there. And it manifested as this
- 3:04crooked spine. And I ended up having spinal surgery when I was
- 3:0915. Where they put Herrington rods in my spine. And I never
- 3:14had symptoms before. But afterwards, I was left sick and
- 3:18in pain for years. And they always said the surgery was a
- 3:20success. They never connected it to the surgery. So I just you
- 3:25know, and every time I would go to the medical doctor for some
- 3:28current symptom, they really didn't have an answer for me. I
- 3:31always say, Why do I keep getting sick, it was always just
- 3:34another antibiotic and other painkiller. And so I just kind
- 3:38of gave up thinking that I'm just going to be living like
- 3:40this. And I was in college trying to find myself. And
- 3:44someone told me to look into the chiropractic profession. And I
- 3:48read the pamphlet, and it said, the power that made the body
- 3:52heals the body. And just
- 3:55Alan Carroll: say that, again, that sounds like one of those
- 3:57golden nuggets that you don't want to go by slow. You want to
- 4:00go slow with that. We'll just go ahead then say that one again.
- 4:03Unknown: Yeah, it said the power that made the body heals the
- 4:06body.
- 4:07Alan Carroll: So you're saying that there's a power within the
- 4:09body, that people if they can access can be used to heal, heal
- 4:17the body? So you're saying?
- 4:19Unknown: That's exactly right. Okay, great. And it really
- 4:23resonated at the time and I believe it was the first time I
- 4:26heard truth. And I didn't know that at the time. I was 19 years
- 4:29old, but I've always always searching for something. And
- 4:32that really resonated deep. so deep that I just went to
- 4:35chiropractic school on the philosophy I never even got
- 4:38adjusted. And so when I went
- 4:45Alan Carroll: you went to chiropractic school, and chose
- 4:48chiropractic and never had an adjustment. Never had an
- 4:51adjustment. Oh, I tell you that's that's a strong belief.
- 4:56Unknown: And I went, ignorance is bliss, you know, but I went
- 4:59and it began on a journey of a lifetime, and it changed my
- 5:01life.
- 5:03Alan Carroll: That's great. So you've been practicing
- 5:07chiropractic techniques for the last how many years.
- 5:12Unknown: So I had my own practice for 18 years. And then
- 5:14I retired my practice seven years ago, because I wanted to
- 5:18move from my hometown. That's where I practice and just be, I
- 5:21really wanted to work with people who wanted to improve
- 5:25their life, because I saw the connection of, you know, I could
- 5:28adjust you all day long. But if you're not doing the work on
- 5:31yourself, the inner work, you'll never have true well being so.
- 5:36Alan Carroll: Wow. So we have things that an external resource
- 5:42like a chiropractor can do to adjust the body and regulate
- 5:46energy flows. So there's that aspect of healing. And now
- 5:50you're saying that you did that for 10 years and decided to
- 5:57focus more on is there some internal self exploration that
- 6:02can be done to also heal the the physical, mental and emotional
- 6:07bodies, and that's what you've been on for the last seven or
- 6:11eight years.
- 6:12Unknown: Yep. So I really noticed even for myself, I
- 6:16always do the work on myself. But I noticed when I lost the
- 6:18fear that I really had a shift in my health and my well being
- 6:23and I started to come out of my symptoms, and it was a few
- 6:25years, you know, of getting adjusted, it wasn't a quick fix.
- 6:28The body worked helped me reintegrate into my body, but I
- 6:31was also learning and expanding my mind on how the body actually
- 6:35heals. As I was working on creating my desired life, you
- 6:39know, and I always, when I listened to people come in my
- 6:41office, I realized that the mental stress and emotional
- 6:45stress that they were carrying was contributing to the stress
- 6:49coming out in their body, whether it was pain, recurring
- 6:52symptoms, chronic symptoms that wouldn't clear up, you know,
- 6:55some symptoms, most symptoms are just your body's way of
- 6:57rebalancing itself. But when you're sick get stuck in like a
- 7:01chronic state of disease, there's usually more going on.
- 7:04And I noticed this just people didn't have enough time didn't
- 7:07have enough money, they weren't really living purposefully, they
- 7:10were in the rat race of life is what I called it. And even if
- 7:13they wanted to choose how to take care of their health, a lot
- 7:19of times, they couldn't afford it, they only did what their
- 7:21insurance said, you know, they couldn't afford alternative
- 7:24care, organic products, or even just taking time off. So I saw
- 7:30all this is, this is really crazy how how we're so set up
- 7:34with this kind of lifestyle. And I saw how important it was to
- 7:37really address all these areas to really make true change.
- 7:43Alan Carroll: Okay, let's go down that path. You you have
- 7:49done your research, you have done exploration in the area,
- 7:54you have a variety of tools that you've heard about. And you then
- 7:57can take tools and start to try out tools, see which works we
- 8:02see which doesn't work all with the intention of healing and
- 8:07becoming more present in the moment. So those crazy thoughts
- 8:12stop influencing physical changes in your body. So what
- 8:17are some of the the take us down the path now of the of the inner
- 8:22journey now the things that you're doing to support people?
- 8:25What is your gifts that you bring to the table now?
- 8:30Unknown: Well, I have my book that just shares my stories,
- 8:35because I always say we learn from each other's stories, if I
- 8:37can do it, you can do it. It Empower we, you know, we empower
- 8:40each other. By seeing how we overcome obstacles. I believe
- 8:44that I have a healthy habits coaching program, I also have if
- 8:48people want to create another stream of income to become
- 8:51financially free, I have that business mentorship, option two.
- 8:56But the best place to start is the mindfulness though, because
- 9:00a lot of people aren't quite sure where they need to start,
- 9:04or what they want in life. So I always say, ask yourself, you
- 9:09know, are you living your desired life? And if not, at you
- 9:13know, write down things that need that you want to change in
- 9:17your life, write down things that are working in your life,
- 9:19the best place to start is really journaling. And just
- 9:23becoming aware of where you are presently and what you want to
- 9:27change. And sometimes I think a lot of people do know what they
- 9:30want. But they don't want to acknowledge it because they
- 9:33don't think it's possible. So I always think it's so important
- 9:36to write those ideas down because it opens you up to
- 9:40receiving guidance and messages might not be today. But it's
- 9:45like baby steps one thing at a time will start to manifest for
- 9:48yourself to make those changes. But it is mindfulness and
- 9:51awareness of where you are in the present moment and where
- 9:54your thoughts are and how you're feeling and I think journal
- 9:56journaling is a powerful tool to get clear on on all those little
- 10:00things,
- 10:02Alan Carroll: though writing down a journal, it's, you know,
- 10:07I have a, have a journal with me. And I write down sort of
- 10:11daily things in my journal, sort of almost like a way of keeping
- 10:16track of the flow, I guess I would call it. And so journaling
- 10:22creates a, you can write down goals in your journal. And that
- 10:27begins to attract that particular manifestation is that
- 10:32you're just saying,
- 10:34Unknown: yes, that's one way. And even if you don't have a
- 10:37goal, if you're not sure what you are looking for, I think a
- 10:41good place to start is writing down what you're grateful for,
- 10:44like a gratitude list, or even things that make you joyful, or
- 10:48inspire you throughout the day, little things, just feeling the
- 10:51sun on your face, you know, just having maybe a moment to take a
- 10:54walk outside, things like that, because it opens you up to
- 10:58receiving more of those positive things. A lot of times we get
- 11:01stuck on, I have to fix this, this and this, you know, are all
- 11:05our problems, right? That manifesting. Instead of focusing
- 11:09on that we can focus on what's right, and then you start
- 11:11attracting more of what's right in your life.
- 11:16Alan Carroll: I totally agree. I think that the one one teacher
- 11:20was telling me before you go to bed at night, you got a choice,
- 11:25you know, do you want to watch that that TV show of the crime
- 11:28and the violence and all that stuff going on? And then go to
- 11:31bed with those thoughts? Or do you want to get your journal and
- 11:36write down the things that you're have gratitude and
- 11:39grateful for? So you go to bed with gratitude and grateful in
- 11:43your mind, and I thought that was pretty slick. And I agree
- 11:47that most people complain a lot about the way it is, like these
- 11:54things shouldn't be there. No, this shouldn't be this shouldn't
- 11:56be I like that. No, I don't like that should be. So there's a lot
- 11:59of shouldn't bees in the in the movie of life. And, and they
- 12:05complain about the the thing isn't a sort of, don't focus on
- 12:11spending the time to focus on the gratitude part. And, and the
- 12:17gratitude part is appreciation for the gifts that you're just
- 12:24not seeing. And when you begin to focus on the gifts that
- 12:28you're not seeing, you begin to see the gifts and then
- 12:33appreciate the gifts and allows if for me, that allows me to be
- 12:39more relaxed in the moment rather than upset, upset in the
- 12:46moment. And I believe and I bet the doctor part of your your
- 12:51brand, would talk about the thoughts that you think have a
- 12:55has a lot to do with your physical body. So I'd like to
- 12:58jump into that. Thoughts to take us take us through the power of
- 13:03thought and the influence it has on the physical body.
- 13:06Unknown: Yeah, so if you just recognizer that there is an
- 13:09inner wisdom that runs your body. I mean, we're all energy.
- 13:12So you think about, I would adjust the body, adjust the
- 13:16spine, so that the energy flows better. But I always say to
- 13:19people, how are you flowing your energy, get in tune with how
- 13:23you're flowing your energy, because if you're not dealing
- 13:26with the emotional, mental thoughts that are making you
- 13:29contract throughout the day, you hold yourself tight, then
- 13:32eventually it's going to come out as disease in the body. It
- 13:35could be I mean, it could be another symptom.
- 13:37Alan Carroll: Let's go real slow that one boy, that's, that is
- 13:41real, real, real, real, real, real important. What you just
- 13:45said. And so this said, 20 times, so it's just the power of
- 13:52your thoughts to change your physical body. Some people
- 13:55think, wow, what are you talking about? It's just a thought, you
- 13:58know, you got to do push ups. You know, there's talk about the
- 14:03power of the mind.
- 14:04Unknown: Yeah, I mean, if you notice the mental state that
- 14:07you're in, and then connect that to how your body feels, you can
- 14:10feel if there's tension or ease right away, that's everything.
- 14:14Alan Carroll: So so if you're, if you're, if you're on a train
- 14:19of thought, and you wake up and realize that you're on a train
- 14:24of thought, and then you immediately look at your body,
- 14:28you're saying that you'll you'll notice that there's a tension, a
- 14:32physical tension in your body, which causes constriction. Is
- 14:36that what we're talking about? That's exactly right. Okay, so
- 14:39talk about the the the challenges of bodies that are
- 14:44constricted.
- 14:45Unknown: Yeah, well, if you can, if you keep your body in a
- 14:49period of constriction for a long period of time, over time,
- 14:52eventually you create stress on the body. Dis ease, could be
- 14:56disease, chronic symptoms, whatever it manifests. sent to
- 15:00you. But, you know, there's emotional components to
- 15:03everybody, bodily symptoms. So it's just becoming aware, before
- 15:08you get to that place. I mean, I always say that disease is a
- 15:11wake up call to somebody to make a change in their life. You
- 15:14know, it gets to that point where they had small whispers
- 15:17before until it got to the point where I have no return. So it's
- 15:22really becoming aware of how you're carrying the energy in
- 15:25your body, because that's your immune system. It's how you're
- 15:27flowing your energy. So you're either flowing it or you're not
- 15:30flowing it. And you can totally start to correlate it to the
- 15:33thoughts and feelings that you're carrying on the inside
- 15:36inside of you.
- 15:40Alan Carroll: How do you deal with, I'm right, and I can get
- 15:46my anger and I'm right, and you're wrong. And that's the way
- 15:50it is. I don't give a damn about this. This is healthy stuff. I
- 15:53just want to there's people who, who say, who have anger and
- 15:59upset and can't let it go. Because somehow i Even though I
- 16:06it causes constriction, I can't let it go. Why can't why people
- 16:11can't let it go.
- 16:13Unknown: Because they've been carrying it around for a long
- 16:15time. And they have to get a new perspective on it. I went
- 16:18through this. I found the Sedona Method by how Dwoskin I don't
- 16:26know if you've ever heard of it, but it's
- 16:28Alan Carroll: write it down. So my audience knows. So that
- 16:30Sedona, which is one of the most spiritual capitals of the of the
- 16:34world. The Sedona Method, all right.
- 16:38Unknown: Yeah, it's a book, I actually bought the course. And
- 16:41I did it for about six months. And it just basically asks you
- 16:45questions, simple questions, like, can you allow yourself to
- 16:48feel this right now? This feeling that you're feeling? Can
- 16:51you allow to let it go right now? If so, yes, or no? If not,
- 16:57why not? You know, there's kind of thing do you just sit with
- 17:00the feeling and ask yourself questions. It's really a
- 17:03powerful, it's very simple, very powerful, though, because it
- 17:06helps you process all those low vibratory emotions that are
- 17:11important in life, the problem is, we've just gotten stuck
- 17:13there. It's not that you won't ever feel anger again. But now
- 17:16you're going to know how to deal with it, honor it and release
- 17:19it. And that's the important part, it's not that they're
- 17:22wrong. It's just that you have to know what it's telling you.
- 17:26And that's, you know, people need to know how to better
- 17:32handle relationships better, better handle things in their
- 17:34life, you know, and it kind of just unravels a lot of things.
- 17:38That's why a lot of people don't want to deal with those things
- 17:41that are life. So it's easier to have to be labeled with the
- 17:44disease, because now society accepts that, more so than
- 17:48dealing with the problems and the relationship or the problems
- 17:51with the job, you know, but it's all interconnected. So you start
- 17:55peeling back a layer, it's going to open up, it's going to lead
- 17:57you to the to the root eventually. But I think the
- 18:01first step is just not being afraid to feel those emotions
- 18:04and knowing how to release them. And also how to get a different
- 18:08perspective on every situation that where you feel like you're
- 18:11stuck in that emotion.
- 18:14Alan Carroll: So to become aware of what's happening inside your
- 18:19body, would mean that you have to take your attention and put
- 18:24it on your body. And my observation is that most people
- 18:29don't put much attention on their body. I put my attention
- 18:34on my thoughts that my that I'm thinking about what I need to do
- 18:38body's just a vehicle that takes me around. So it so i, is there
- 18:45going to be a shift? From paying attention to my thoughts, to
- 18:49paying attention to my body? Is that part of the process that
- 18:52you've noticed?
- 18:53Unknown: Yeah, I mean, I think mind body is one, I don't even
- 18:56think it's separate. So if you break out into a sore throat,
- 19:00you're gonna know Why are you speaking your truth? You know,
- 19:03for me, I used to have chronic strep throat, when I was in that
- 19:07period of those five years where nobody was helping me chronic
- 19:10and I didn't think I could get rid of it without an antibiotic.
- 19:12Now, if I get a scratchy throat, it clears up usually within 24
- 19:16hours or less. And it's usually because I can tell it's the I'm
- 19:20in a situation where I don't feel like I'm being heard or I'm
- 19:22not speaking my truth. So you know, little things like that,
- 19:26you can see what your body's trying to do, and you can honor
- 19:28the symptoms, you know, maybe you just need to rest and stop.
- 19:31That's why you feel so crappy. You know, it's your body's
- 19:34perfect. It's expressing what it needs to it's rebalancing
- 19:37itself. It's always making it's always healing itself. Are you
- 19:40in the way, basically. So it's kind of getting into that
- 19:44understanding that dynamic in that flow.
- 19:48Alan Carroll: So when you say, are you in the way, what comes
- 19:52up to my mind are my thoughts in the way of connecting, that's
- 19:57not going to work? It's not going to I don't believe What
- 20:00does she know about that? There's all these thoughts that
- 20:02are in the way that blocked me from? What? So what how do you
- 20:11get? How do you navigate through all the thoughts?
- 20:16Unknown: I guess it's just, that's another great thing to
- 20:18journal is the thoughts that you're thinking. So then you can
- 20:21maybe see, is it really true for you? You know, is that thought
- 20:25true? And maybe Could I have another perspective? On this
- 20:29thought? Can I? Could I look at it from another viewpoint, you
- 20:32know, or is this a belief that I'm carrying? And where did I
- 20:34get it from? Is it necessary? Is it really true for me? Sometimes
- 20:38we inherit all this stuff, and maybe we evolve out of it, and
- 20:41we don't no longer need it. So, you know, that's the personal
- 20:45development side, you know, you start working on your beliefs
- 20:48and thoughts, and that's creating your reality. So do you
- 20:51really, is this really serving me? This thought, this belief?
- 20:55Is it serving me? And what can I do to change it or shift it?
- 21:00Alan Carroll: So thoughts are like building blocks, you're
- 21:03constructing a, a, a temple, or a pyramid of your of your of
- 21:07your reality, and you're putting these blocks in, and you can
- 21:09choose one point, which kind of block you want to put in a block
- 21:14of hatred or a block of love, I can begin to choose what kind of
- 21:18a pyramid that I want to build, if I'm aware of that. You're
- 21:20saying,
- 21:21Unknown: Yeah, I love the building block scenario, that's
- 21:23a great scenario. I think that's a perfect example. And it's
- 21:28really, you know, you're gonna have passing thoughts throughout
- 21:30the day, but it's usually the ones that are very emotionally
- 21:32charged, that are the ones that are the most potent, or the
- 21:35deepest, are the ones that are really creating your reality. So
- 21:39I think the thought with the emotion behind it, is the really
- 21:43powerful connection.
- 21:45Alan Carroll: And the thoughts and the emotion. And the depth
- 21:50of the root is connected with with your identities that
- 21:57correct. That's right. And so if if I have a strong, for example,
- 22:04if I have a strong root of a God, religion, you mentioned
- 22:08religion, how you were raised, what what garden of a religion,
- 22:11you were raised, and some people are not noticed, or very
- 22:14strongly identified with, this is the way and this has to be
- 22:19the way and if you don't go this way, you're gonna go to hell.
- 22:22And some people are much more flexible. It sounds as though
- 22:27you had a little indoctrination. Early days, but really, what was
- 22:33your religion in the early days?
- 22:35Unknown: Our Catholic Catholic Oh, all right. Well, the
- 22:37Catholic school
- 22:39Alan Carroll: you went to Catholic school 12 years all
- 22:42girl all girl Catholic school, um, just high school. So high
- 22:47school, so is inner. So it was boy girl, and then high school
- 22:50was all girl. All right? Yeah. I, hey, Catholic education, at
- 22:54least in California, and in the Bay Area was considered the best
- 22:58you want to do you want a good education, you go to the
- 23:00Catholic school.
- 23:02Unknown: It was considered that too, when I was growing up.
- 23:05Alan Carroll: It's certainly you've read your book talk talk
- 23:08about your book before we can play that game. Yeah, I'd like
- 23:10to hear about your book and how people can connect with you,
- 23:13Lynn, and get closer to the wisdom that you've certainly
- 23:17given us today. It's really, I filled my journal up with all
- 23:21these wonderful thoughts.
- 23:23Unknown: My book is called my journey to grace, a couple years
- 23:27into practice and a cup had a few mission trips that I did to
- 23:32adjusting people in Brazil and India, it just really opened me
- 23:35up to the energy of the body. And I went into a spiritual
- 23:38state for about 18 months that I call the grace state. And I
- 23:41believe this is the state that everyone is looking for, you
- 23:44know, we're all looking for the next big thing. But it's really
- 23:46to find that God's source within and that once I understood that,
- 23:51it, everything became so clear, and I was so blissful. So happy.
- 23:55It's I describe it as it's like falling in love. But there's no
- 23:58other person or involved. There's no reason there's no
- 24:01rhyme or reason to be this happy. But you are. And you look
- 24:04at your problems, and they're just laughable. And I realized
- 24:08when we want, enter this state, that's where you have true
- 24:11healing. That's where you a lot of times, you have miraculous
- 24:16healings happen in that state. You really start to create your
- 24:19life from the inside out authentically, not because
- 24:23you're thinking you need more money to buy more material
- 24:26things or the bigger house or the next relationship because
- 24:29it's coming from a place of authenticity, you know, that
- 24:32connected to the God's source. And so I share my story, just
- 24:36how I learned to heal myself, all the stuff I went through and
- 24:39the subtitle is just shattering mainstream illusions and
- 24:42creating your desired life. And because I believe a lot of the
- 24:47stuff that we're taught isn't necessarily true for everyone.
- 24:51So I think there's another way to be so I think we I love to
- 24:54hear other people's stories of empowerment. So that's why I
- 24:57decided to share mine. Well, that's
- 24:59Alan Carroll: wonderful. Well, well thank you very much today
