- 0:06Podcast. I'm Alan Carroll. I'll be your host. As we explore
- 0:12together this fascinating, exciting, dynamic, present time,
- 0:21awareness consciousness of this thing we call mindfulness. And
- 0:29many people have taken journeys into mindfulness and presence.
- 0:33And today we have a a healer, Blanca Ainsworth's. And she was
- 0:42a involved in the healing business involved in the health
- 0:48business. She did work with the US agricultural, Department of
- 0:55Nutrition, working on balanced diets working on physical
- 1:00exercise, and at the same time she's traveling down her own own
- 1:06journey, her own soul journey, her own journey of discovery,
- 1:12using a lot of shamanic exercises and tools. Several of
- 1:18the American Native American Indian work with sound baths and
- 1:24flutes, which is just fascinating to hear, talk about
- 1:28those things. So please welcome to the mindful you podcasts.
- 1:34Blanca Haynesworth. Blanca, welcome. Welcome to the mindful
- 1:42you podcast. How are you today?
- 1:44Blanca Ainsworth: Thank you, Ellen. Glad to be here.
- 1:47Alan Carroll: Well, it's wonderful to have you. I was
- 1:50reading a little bit about your background. And I'd like you to
- 1:52share some of your background with our audience. So we have an
- 1:56idea of, of the ground from which you are growing from.
- 2:01Unknown: Sure. Thank you for that, Alan. So my background is
- 2:05in the entrepreneurial space. I used to co own several
- 2:09businesses, specifically in the restaurant industry that went
- 2:16sideways with different partners learned a lot along the way. I
- 2:20got into the financial services industry, specifically life
- 2:25insurance. And to qualify, I had to find out about my client's
- 2:29health because that's how you qualify for life insurance. And
- 2:33just working in that space. I saw so many individuals with
- 2:38lots of health issues, lots of medications. It really shocked
- 2:43me, I'm very physically active. I'm actually running a marathon,
- 2:48my bucket list marathon in Bordeaux, France and a couple of
- 2:52weeks. And I'm just seeing how so many individuals are on so
- 2:57many medications when I am not on any just really made me deep
- 3:02dive a little deeper. I ended up moonlighting with USU extension
- 3:09and they're on Department of Agriculture nutrition program,
- 3:14teaching better health eating and encouraging physical fitness
- 3:19with individuals that had poor health compromised as well as
- 3:25had food insecurities. So it was people on tighter budgets that
- 3:30were not necessarily making the best food choices because of
- 3:35money constraints. And I'm somewhere along all of this. I
- 3:40actually embarked on my own quest, soul journey. I was
- 3:48navigating a lot of trauma with a capital T had a horrific loss
- 3:53that impacted our family for years. On that quest on just
- 3:59what traditionally was suggested was not working for me. I what I
- 4:03ended up doing hypnotherapy I started doing lots of spiritual
- 4:07work. I was going to lots of sound baths
- 4:12Alan Carroll: did a lot of shamanic to sell sound baths.
- 4:16Sound bath, what's the sound bass.
- 4:20Unknown: So if you've ever seen if you've ever been to any
- 4:23meditation groups, or any kind of meditations, a lot of the
- 4:29practitioners have these bowls that are made of glass. They'll
- 4:34have different instruments as as well. Like sometimes they'll
- 4:39have different flutes or a lot of them could be Native American
- 4:44type flutes and they'll just give you a bath with sound is
- 4:48where the name comes from. They use lots of instruments. It
- 4:52brings up different vibrations, and it's just meant to get your
- 4:57body and spirit and mine in a state where you can relax and
- 5:01calm and just really ground.
- 5:05Alan Carroll: So the vibrations of the music or the vibrations
- 5:09of the instruments, create a harmony and you and are able to
- 5:15settle down the nervousness and anxiety and calm yourself. Is
- 5:21that Is that what it does?
- 5:24Unknown: You know there are there's different kinds of sound
- 5:26baths and depending on the instruments that the
- 5:29practitioner uses, the ones I attended were meant for shamanic
- 5:32journeying. So there was a lot of Native American type flutes
- 5:37to lots of other indigenous and Peruvian style type of
- 5:41instruments. But yes, the whole goal is to get your body with a
- 5:47certain resonance because the instruments are vibrating, and
- 5:51it just really helps calm you down. You know, sometimes they
- 5:54use just balls as well. Singing balls, if you've ever heard of
- 5:59those are sure whether they're metal or glass. And so it really
- 6:04is a bash with sound.
- 6:09Alan Carroll: That's great. That's great. And when and now
- 6:12we talked about the shamanistic journeys, we talked about the
- 6:17American Native American Indians. Is this did you do this
- 6:21by going somewhere? Or did you do it online?
- 6:25Unknown: You know, I started by attending events that had these
- 6:29different healing modalities. It really resonated with me. Just
- 6:34different. Native American practices have always resonated
- 6:38with me. A lot of my friends are Native American. I happen to
- 6:43make
- 6:44Alan Carroll: Can you show us something? That's great.
- 6:47Unknown: Okay, to make my own. You made. I made this Yes. Yes,
- 6:53this sounds like buffalo skin. I have friends that ethically
- 6:57procured the different skins on. So everything on my path just
- 7:02just led me to just going deeper and deeper into the soul journey
- 7:07of different shamanic practices for trauma healing, I'm actually
- 7:13doing a course right now. To help with that. And what I
- 7:18learned along this is that, um, I think a lot of times alternate
- 7:23ways of healing are not taught for trauma. I also did
- 7:26hypnotherapy and put me on my own path, to just become a
- 7:30healthier me, not just through my physical exercise, the food I
- 7:34eat, which is nutrition, but just things that feed my soul,
- 7:39that traditional mode modalities, traditional therapy,
- 7:42or not really addressing or helping with,
- 7:46Alan Carroll: wow. And what are some of the practices so that my
- 7:52audience is listening to your talk? And they said, Wow, what
- 7:56can I do, sitting here in Washington, DC, to help me
- 8:02become more present and mindful? Or do you have any tips or
- 8:06tricks or exercises?
- 8:09Unknown: What really helped me is just being out in nature,
- 8:14because I'm very physically active. It's just part of what I
- 8:19do. It's part of my lifestyle. But I would just say, regardless
- 8:23of whatever your level of physical fitness is, I'm just
- 8:27being out in nature being with trees. You know, being on the
- 8:31grass, if you happen to live by the live by the ocean, you know,
- 8:35just getting out and really being a nature. It's very
- 8:39calming, it's very peaceful. For me, running is very meditative.
- 8:44I get into a zone. I feel like, all my problems are left behind.
- 8:50And I really do have to be present. I trail run. So if I'm
- 8:54not in that moment, I can really, Bev and fall. So it
- 9:01really makes me just think of what I am at that present
- 9:06moment, not about my past, not about the future, just where I
- 9:10am.
- 9:13Alan Carroll: So mindfulness, you're talking about
- 9:15mindfulness, you're talking about presence. Absolutely. How
- 9:20would you define mindfulness in your in your point of view? But
- 9:25Blanca, what's mindfulness mean to you? And my.
- 9:30Unknown: So mindfulness for me just means being very aware of
- 9:36where I am in the present moment. A lot of times it
- 9:39involves just taking, talking to myself asking where I am
- 9:44emotionally. In the past, I did not always have the best habits
- 9:49about you know, taking stock and became very reactionary versus
- 9:54just really calming myself and responding with calmness versus
- 10:01reactionary, so So just really taking a deep breath, a lot of
- 10:06breath work goes into these sound baths, as well as running
- 10:11makes me breathe, walking, just being in tune with my own
- 10:14breath. But mindfulness and just knowing I'm thinking about what
- 10:21I'm going to do at this present moment, and how that is going to
- 10:26leave me feeling, or others that are around me how it will make
- 10:31them feel. So just really being aware of how I can affect others
- 10:35for good, or for negative if I don't choose to be calm, and
- 10:41respond, and instead I'm reactive.
- 10:44Alan Carroll: I like that a lot. Because in that's a big
- 10:48distinction, you're pointing to Blanca, where the, there's an
- 10:52automatic reaction based on your conditioning. And then there's a
- 10:57pause, breathe, relax, center, ah, respond to what's going on.
- 11:03And so you said the word react, and you said the word respond.
- 11:07And there are two different two different words that are
- 11:10important. So go ahead and, and talk to our audience about the
- 11:14differences between reacting to things and responding to things.
- 11:20Unknown: Sure, so I'm just for my own healing journey, I really
- 11:24delve into trying to heal myself from trauma. And a lot of what I
- 11:30learned whether it's the Body Keeps the Score, I listened to a
- 11:33lot of Dr. Levine's teachings as well, on different modalities on
- 11:39just the fight or flight response. And I know a lot of
- 11:42times, I was an either fight flight freeze, just, you know,
- 11:48my my brain functioning, just completely went to the lizard
- 11:53brain, because that's what we do when we survive. And as I went
- 11:58on this journey to heal myself, on through exercise, through
- 12:02eating through mindfulness practices, just really calming
- 12:10myself first and knowing that I'm not in that danger zone,
- 12:15right now, I'm out of it, I don't have to react, the bear is
- 12:19not hunting me. So just really calm me and being present on not
- 12:25being reactive. Reactive is when it's a life or death situation.
- 12:30And a lot of it is just, you know, getting to that place
- 12:34where you're not living in the trauma anymore. And that was a
- 12:39journey in and of itself. But just knowing the difference
- 12:43between you're under attack right now, or, and all that
- 12:46happened. Now, you're just healing and calming yourself. So
- 12:50you don't need to be reactive.
- 12:53Alan Carroll: And the, the the quality of the behavior, in
- 12:59terms of no mental health, I suspect that the quality of the
- 13:06behavior, if it's responding to something, it comes out of a
- 13:10more calm space. Whereas the reactive, as you said, comes out
- 13:16of more, I'm agitated, I'm upset, something is threatening
- 13:19me, my identity is being threatened. I'm upset about
- 13:22something and out of that space, I want to talk to you. So what
- 13:27what I hear you saying is that you've learned that, you might
- 13:32want to do that. But take that breath. So let's talk about
- 13:38breathing. Because you mentioned that a couple of times. Do you
- 13:42have any breathing exercises that you found very useful, and
- 13:49in becoming more calm and still.
- 13:53Unknown: And you know what, thank you for asking this
- 13:56because I sometimes still fall into patterns where I forget to
- 14:00do those things, which is why I find it so helpful to often go
- 14:04to meditative groups with practitioners that remind me how
- 14:08to breathe again. So I just actually even recently did that.
- 14:13And I know a lot of what they say is how you breathe in
- 14:15through your nose, and breathe out through your mouth and
- 14:19through your nose and through your mouth. I know sometimes my
- 14:23breathing pattern changes. When I run, I catch myself breathing
- 14:29a lot in and out through my mouth as well. And I know for
- 14:32calming purposes, I'm just even sitting down and just really
- 14:38trying to be present. Just the cycle of the breath. And there's
- 14:43different modalities of like breathing I've done several
- 14:47different I guess it down healing session so the
- 14:51practitioner will have us breathe differently. When I'm
- 14:54consciously just trying to calm I actually do either put my hand
- 15:00on my heart and calm. And another thing and my other hand
- 15:05on my belly to breathe. And that helps me. Other things that have
- 15:15helped me what else like that? Thank you. The other things I
- 15:23learned that have helped me is I became a practitioner of the
- 15:28tapping method. I had my hypnotherapist helped me through
- 15:32that. And Nick Ortner and his sister Jessica Ortner are the
- 15:38people that pretty much introduced me to the health
- 15:43benefits and Cami benefits of tapping when I'm in that
- 15:46reactive mode. My hypnotherapist introduced me to that modality
- 15:51but just the tapping. And I know there's lots of science
- 15:57speeches, and yes, it just really comes. And a lot of times
- 16:01that you say different mantras. For example, if I'm stressed
- 16:07right now, I'll say I am calm. This doesn't have to worry me.
- 16:11Nothing's to worry, this doesn't have to worry me, I am calm.
- 16:15This doesn't have to worry me. I am calm. This doesn't have to
- 16:19worry me. I am calm can be calm. This doesn't have to worry me. I
- 16:26know how to calm myself. I can I can be calm. I know how to. But
- 16:31just tapping on the different meridians that really helped me.
- 16:36And that was part of what also facilitated just not being so
- 16:42reactionary. When I was not in a good state.
- 16:49Alan Carroll: Yep, yep. The the, you're pointing to the
- 16:54unimportant part of mindfulness is that aware witness observer
- 17:01of what's going on. And the problem with the awareness
- 17:05observer and witness is that requires you to have a space
- 17:12between the event that's going on outside of you and the
- 17:15observer. And if there's no space, then you are the event
- 17:19you are the thought you are the emotion. But if there's a space,
- 17:24then you can observe the event, you can observe the emotion, you
- 17:26can observe your mental reaction to it, and you don't need to
- 17:29act. But most people don't take the time to practice one step at
- 17:38a time creating a little space, a little space, a little space.
- 17:41So every day you have a practice, you have a time every
- 17:43day, where you sit down for 510 1520 minutes, sighs closed,
- 17:49just calming the body and practicing. So when when stuff
- 17:53shows up, you've done your push ups, you've done your exercises,
- 17:57you catch yourself. You take that breath. You don't vote like
- 18:02that you catch yourself and realize boom is not what my ego
- 18:07wants to boom, but I know it's not going to handle the problem.
- 18:11So it sounds like you've done a wonderful job and in dealing
- 18:14with your own trauma, dealing with your own emotions dealing
- 18:17with your own mental and physical issues. And that's
- 18:20congratulations on your journey. And I wish you success as you do
- 18:25your do your marathon in France. That's what's a wonderful

- 18:47people could connect with you if they wanted to have another
- 18:51continuing conversation?
- 18:54Unknown: Thank you, Alan. Um, the best way for people on your
- 18:57podcast to mind for you to connect with me would be through
- 19:00you. I am still in the germination stage of my podcast.

- 19:38as a domain. So I'll see it coming soon.
