- 0:00Mark Ackers: Welcome
- 0:00to the
- 0:00podcast.
- 0:01Here's a
- 0:01sneak peek
- 0:02of what's
- 0:02coming up
- 0:03in today's
- 0:03episode.
- 0:04Did you
- 0:04used to be
- 0:04crap at
- 0:05sales? Oh,
- 0:05yes, how
- 0:06crap were
- 0:06you
- 0:07talking I
- 0:07think
- 0:07Unknown: I
- 0:07didn't
- 0:08realize
- 0:08it. Back
- 0:09then, I
- 0:09was in the
- 0:10sort of
- 0:11twos and
- 0:12threes. I
- 0:12went from
- 0:13this whole
- 0:13sort of,
- 0:14you know,
- 0:14was on a
- 0:15sort of
- 0:16PIP to be
- 0:16marched
- 0:17out the
- 0:17door to
- 0:18then, oh,
- 0:19wow, you
- 0:19did
- 0:20everything
- 0:20right? How
- 0:21clever of
- 0:21you funny,
- 0:22because it
- 0:22was a
- 0:23nearly
- 0:23complete
- 0:24disaster,
- 0:24and then
- 0:24it was one
- 0:25of the
- 0:25biggest
- 0:26deals that
- 0:26we
- 0:26actually,
- 0:27we
- 0:27actually
- 0:27landed.
- 0:27What was
- 0:28Mark Ackers: the
- 0:28deal
- 0:28worth?
- 0:29845,000
- 0:31Nice. What
- 0:31percent
- 0:32commission
- 0:32were you
- 0:32on? Did I
- 0:33write out
- 0:33that one?
- 0:33I think
- 0:34people
- 0:34that are
- 0:35thinking
- 0:35about
- 0:36making the
- 0:36move into
- 0:37management
- 0:37or as
- 0:38their
- 0:38first gig,
- 0:39they might
- 0:39struggle,
- 0:40not
- 0:40thrive.
- 0:41You've got
- 0:42interesting
- 0:43experience
- 0:43in areas.
- 0:44Unknown: Yeah,
- 0:44I used
- 0:44another
- 0:45example of
- 0:46Alex
- 0:46Ferguson.
- 0:47Ferguson
- 0:47was famous
- 0:48for making
- 0:49sure that
- 0:50he was
- 0:51taking the
- 0:52heat out
- 0:53of the
- 0:54situation.
- 0:55So if a
- 0:55game went
- 0:56badly and
- 0:58he was
- 0:58being
- 0:59interviewed,
- 0:59it's
- 0:59because he
- 1:00put people
- 1:01in the
- 1:01wrong
- 1:01places. He
- 1:02had the
- 1:03wrong
- 1:03strategy,
- 1:04and it's
- 1:04down to
- 1:04him. If I
- 1:05said to
- 1:05you, list
- 1:06a few of
- 1:07the traits
- 1:08of a top
- 1:09performing
- 1:09IC mindset
- 1:11wise, what
- 1:11would you
- 1:12say
- 1:12individual
- 1:13contributors
- 1:13should be
- 1:14very, very
- 1:15focused.
- 1:15Got to be
- 1:16diligent
- 1:16and
- 1:17methodical
- 1:17about what
- 1:18they what
- 1:18they're
- 1:18actually
- 1:19doing,
- 1:19keep sort
- 1:20of zooming
- 1:21out of the
- 1:21weeds they
- 1:22might be
- 1:23in in a
- 1:23particular
- 1:23deal or
- 1:24account or
- 1:24something
- 1:25going on,
- 1:25and keep
- 1:26taking a
- 1:27check of
- 1:27the bigger
- 1:28picture of
- 1:29what's
- 1:29going on.
- 1:29One of my
- 1:30disasters
- 1:31early on
- 1:31was
- 1:31creating a
- 1:32team of
- 1:32mini me's.
- 1:33We hire
- 1:33great
- 1:34people,
- 1:34and then
- 1:34we tell
- 1:35them what
- 1:35to do. And
- 1:35that's
- 1:36what I was
- 1:36doing.
- 1:36That's
- 1:37completely
- 1:37wrong,
- 1:37because
- 1:38there's
- 1:38many
- 1:38different
- 1:39ways of
- 1:39completing
- 1:40what
- 1:40you're
- 1:41trying to
- 1:41achieve,
- 1:42and people
- 1:42would do
- 1:42it in
- 1:43different
- 1:43ways. So
- 1:44your job,
- 1:45from the
- 1:45manager
- 1:45point of
- 1:46view, is
- 1:46trying to
- 1:47understand.
- 1:53Mark Ackers: Hello
- 1:53and
- 1:53welcome to
- 1:54another
- 1:54episode of
- 1:55The I used
- 1:55to be crap
- 1:56at sales
- 1:56podcast.
- 1:57I'm your
- 1:57host, Mark
- 1:58Akers, the
- 1:59co founder
- 1:59and Head
- 2:00of Sales
- 2:00here at my
- 2:00sales
- 2:01coach, we
- 2:02called the
- 2:02podcast
- 2:03that
- 2:03because
- 2:03it's true
- 2:04and all of
- 2:05our guests
- 2:05say the
- 2:06same.
- 2:07Today's
- 2:07episode,
- 2:08we're
- 2:08going to
- 2:08focus on
- 2:09what it's
- 2:10like being
- 2:10a first
- 2:11time sales
- 2:11leader. So
- 2:12if you're
- 2:13thinking
- 2:13of making
- 2:14the move,
- 2:15or you are
- 2:16in a first
- 2:16time sales
- 2:17leadership
- 2:17role, this
- 2:18episode is
- 2:19for you,
- 2:20and here's
- 2:21who I'm
- 2:21joined by
- 2:23in the
- 2:23orange
- 2:23chair.
- 2:23Today, we
- 2:24have a man
- 2:25with a
- 2:25rich
- 2:25background,
- 2:2620 plus
- 2:27years
- 2:27experience
- 2:28working
- 2:29with
- 2:29global
- 2:30tech
- 2:30businesses,
- 2:31primarily
- 2:32cloud
- 2:32software,
- 2:33SaaS,
- 2:33Microsoft
- 2:34for four
- 2:35years, VP
- 2:35of Sales
- 2:36for SAP,
- 2:37the global
- 2:38VP of
- 2:38Sales for
- 2:39sage,
- 2:39which had
- 2:40a trade
- 2:40sale exit
- 2:41at over 10
- 2:41times ARR
- 2:43and during
- 2:43his time,
- 2:44he's built
- 2:44teams of
- 2:45account
- 2:46managers,
- 2:46new
- 2:46business
- 2:47sales, pre
- 2:48sales
- 2:48consultants
- 2:49and lead
- 2:50generation.
- 2:51And on top
- 2:52of all of
- 2:52that, he's
- 2:53a my sales
- 2:54coach,
- 2:54coach, and
- 2:55this
- 2:55episode is
- 2:56gonna be
- 2:56full of
- 2:57wisdom. I
- 2:57can tell
- 2:58my guest
- 2:59today is
- 2:59Alan
- 3:00Clark.
- 3:00Alan,
- 3:01welcome to
- 3:01orange
- 3:01chairs and
- 3:02to
- 3:02Newcastle.
- 3:03How are
- 3:03you?
- 3:03Unknown: I'm
- 3:03really
- 3:04good.
- 3:04Thank you.
- 3:04And these
- 3:05are, these
- 3:05are
- 3:05fantastically
- 3:06comfortable,
- 3:07if not a
- 3:07Mark Ackers: little
- 3:07warm, is a
- 3:08bit
- 3:08warmer,
- 3:08but you'd
- 3:09have to
- 3:09wear a
- 3:09jumper, so
- 3:10you're
- 3:10okay. In
- 3:11terms of
- 3:12this
- 3:13episode,
- 3:13we always
- 3:14start with
- 3:14a yes, no
- 3:15question,
- 3:15sure, did
- 3:16you, or
- 3:16did you
- 3:17not used
- 3:17to be crap
- 3:18at sales?
- 3:18Oh, yes.
- 3:19Unknown: Oh.
- 3:20I mean,
- 3:20that could
- 3:21be borne
- 3:21out by a
- 3:22couple of
- 3:23pips.
- 3:23Those that
- 3:24don't know
- 3:24what a pip
- 3:25is, is a
- 3:26hopefully
- 3:26you won't
- 3:27ever
- 3:27experience
- 3:28one. So
- 3:28yeah, I've
- 3:29been in
- 3:29crap at
- 3:29sales. And
- 3:31Mark Ackers: how
- 3:31crap were
- 3:31we talking
- 3:32on a scale
- 3:32of one to
- 3:331010,
- 3:33being
- 3:34elite, one
- 3:35being
- 3:35crap. How
- 3:36crap were
- 3:36we
- 3:36talking?
- 3:37Pretty
- 3:37crap. I
- 3:38was in the
- 3:38sort of
- 3:39twos and
- 3:40threes?
- 3:41Yeah, it
- 3:41was pretty
- 3:41low to
- 3:41start
- 3:42with.
- 3:42Often
- 3:43guests
- 3:43have just
- 3:44a funny
- 3:45story how,
- 3:47like, a
- 3:47big
- 3:47mistake
- 3:48they've
- 3:48made in
- 3:48their
- 3:48career.
- 3:49Yeah,
- 3:49share one
- 3:50with us. I
- 3:51Unknown: was
- 3:52alluding
- 3:53to the
- 3:53fact that
- 3:53I've seen
- 3:54a lot of
- 3:54people
- 3:55fail in
- 3:56that
- 3:56because
- 3:56they've
- 3:57gone about
- 3:57it without
- 3:58realizing
- 3:59why they
- 4:00really
- 4:00want it,
- 4:01and they
- 4:01feel like
- 4:01it's just
- 4:02a natural
- 4:03progression
- 4:03step, it's
- 4:04kind of a
- 4:05promotion.
- 4:06And I
- 4:06think too
- 4:06many
- 4:07people
- 4:08really go
- 4:09into it
- 4:09without
- 4:10understanding
- 4:11what's
- 4:12involved,
- 4:12and that
- 4:13it's that
- 4:13it's a
- 4:13completely
- 4:14different
- 4:14job. I
- 4:15really
- 4:16enjoy
- 4:16talking to
- 4:17aspiring
- 4:17managers,
- 4:18getting
- 4:18under the
- 4:19skin of
- 4:19why they
- 4:20really
- 4:20want to
- 4:20actually
- 4:21do it
- 4:21right? If
- 4:22you're
- 4:22going to
- 4:22do it for
- 4:23the money,
- 4:23or you're
- 4:24going to
- 4:24do it for
- 4:24the ego,
- 4:25you're
- 4:25doing it
- 4:26for the
- 4:26title,
- 4:27you're in
- 4:27all sorts
- 4:28of
- 4:29trouble.
- 4:29And so
- 4:29there's
- 4:30some
- 4:30interesting
- 4:31questions
- 4:32you need
- 4:32to ask
- 4:32yourself
- 4:33quietly,
- 4:34why you
- 4:35actually
- 4:35want to go
- 4:35and do
- 4:36that?
- 4:36Well, that
- 4:36was my
- 4:37Mark Ackers: first
- 4:37question
- 4:37for you,
- 4:38actually,
- 4:38when we
- 4:39think of
- 4:39aspiring
- 4:39sounds
- 4:40leaders,
- 4:41I've, you
- 4:41know, over
- 4:41the last
- 4:4215 years,
- 4:42spoke to
- 4:43many
- 4:43individual
- 4:44contributors,
- 4:44and they
- 4:45all talked
- 4:45about
- 4:46getting
- 4:46out of
- 4:47what they
- 4:47call,
- 4:47like, you
- 4:47know, the
- 4:48rat race,
- 4:48having a
- 4:49quota.
- 4:50They want
- 4:50to take
- 4:51that
- 4:51leadership
- 4:51step. And
- 4:53most
- 4:54people, I
- 4:54feel, want
- 4:55to be a
- 4:55sales
- 4:56leader.
- 4:56They say
- 4:56they do,
- 4:56right?
- 4:57They're
- 4:57individual
- 4:58companies
- 4:58right now.
- 4:58They want
- 4:59to be a
- 4:59sales
- 4:59leader.
- 5:00But should
- 5:00they be
- 5:01what
- 5:02questions
- 5:02should
- 5:03they ask
- 5:03themselves
- 5:04to help
- 5:04identify
- 5:05they
- 5:05should
- 5:05take that
- 5:06step.
- 5:06Unknown: It's
- 5:07the,
- 5:07probably
- 5:07the most
- 5:08important
- 5:08thing
- 5:09you'll
- 5:09you'll do.
- 5:12I'd
- 5:12suggest
- 5:13you
- 5:14surround
- 5:14yourself
- 5:15with a
- 5:15couple of
- 5:15people
- 5:16that can
- 5:17help you.
- 5:18Also be
- 5:18honest
- 5:19with
- 5:19yourself
- 5:19as well
- 5:21and ask,
- 5:22what is
- 5:23your true
- 5:23motivation
- 5:24behind it?
- 5:25I don't
- 5:26think
- 5:26there's
- 5:27anything
- 5:27wrong with
- 5:28wanting to
- 5:29do a sales
- 5:31job
- 5:31because of
- 5:32the money.
- 5:32People
- 5:33kind of
- 5:33think, you
- 5:34know, am I
- 5:35being
- 5:36Yeah, am
- 5:37I? Am I
- 5:38looking at
- 5:38in the
- 5:38wrong way?
- 5:39I don't
- 5:39think
- 5:39there's
- 5:39anything
- 5:40wrong with
- 5:40that at
- 5:41all, to be
- 5:41honest.
- 5:42But I
- 5:42think if
- 5:42you're
- 5:42going into
- 5:43sales
- 5:43leadership,
- 5:44you need
- 5:44to really
- 5:46have the
- 5:47right
- 5:47motivations
- 5:48behind it.
- 5:48So why?
- 5:49Why do you
- 5:49actually
- 5:50want to do
- 5:50it? And
- 5:52the big
- 5:52avoidance
- 5:53that I see
- 5:54time and
- 5:54time again
- 5:55is because
- 5:56you're
- 5:57really
- 5:57good at
- 5:57sales.
- 5:59Somebody
- 6:00spotted
- 6:00that and
- 6:00say, Hey,
- 6:01you're
- 6:01really
- 6:01good at
- 6:02sales. Can
- 6:02you lead
- 6:03the team?
- 6:04And that
- 6:05ends up as
- 6:06a
- 6:06disaster.
- 6:06A lot of a
- 6:07lot of the
- 6:07time
- 6:08watching
- 6:08that is,
- 6:09it's
- 6:09completely
- 6:10different
- 6:10job. It's
- 6:11totally
- 6:12different.
- 6:13I mean
- 6:13sales,
- 6:14sales
- 6:14leader
- 6:15that I
- 6:16don't, I
- 6:16don't even
- 6:17know why
- 6:17we
- 6:18actually
- 6:19make that
- 6:19an easy
- 6:20progression
- 6:21without it
- 6:22actually
- 6:22being
- 6:23looked at
- 6:23in a lot
- 6:24more
- 6:24detail.
- 6:25It's a
- 6:25different
- 6:26job. I
- 6:26think
- 6:27Mark Ackers: largely
- 6:27it comes
- 6:27down to
- 6:28wanting to
- 6:28retain
- 6:28talent.
- 6:29People
- 6:29want to
- 6:30take that
- 6:30step. If
- 6:31they're
- 6:31not going
- 6:31to get it
- 6:32here,
- 6:32they'll
- 6:32get it
- 6:32somewhere
- 6:33else. You
- 6:34lose that
- 6:34knowledge,
- 6:35that
- 6:35experience.
- 6:36I think
- 6:37that's
- 6:37largely
- 6:37what
- 6:38happens. I
- 6:39agree with
- 6:39you. It's
- 6:39totally
- 6:40different
- 6:40job. It's
- 6:41a totally
- 6:41different
- 6:41motion,
- 6:42mindset,
- 6:43etc. Can
- 6:45someone
- 6:46who's crap
- 6:47at sales
- 6:47be a good
- 6:47sales
- 6:48leader,
- 6:48though?
- 6:51Unknown: Well,
- 6:51controversially,
- 6:52I think
- 6:52they
- 6:52probably
- 6:53can. I
- 6:55think the
- 6:56problem
- 6:56there will
- 6:56be how
- 6:58they earn
- 6:58their
- 6:58respect
- 6:59and how
- 7:00they gain
- 7:01sort of
- 7:02trust with
- 7:03that, with
- 7:04their
- 7:04team,
- 7:05largely,
- 7:06people
- 7:08turn to
- 7:08people
- 7:08that they
- 7:09can see,
- 7:09that have
- 7:10gotten
- 7:10experience
- 7:11or
- 7:12something
- 7:12about
- 7:12them,
- 7:13that's,
- 7:13that's,
- 7:14that's
- 7:14done what
- 7:15they're
- 7:15doing, and
- 7:16they rely
- 7:16on that.
- 7:18But when
- 7:19you
- 7:19actually
- 7:20compare
- 7:21that to a
- 7:22lot of
- 7:23time. You
- 7:23know,
- 7:24sales guys
- 7:24always do
- 7:25this. We
- 7:25compare
- 7:25ourselves
- 7:26to sports
- 7:28coaches.
- 7:29Yeah, some
- 7:29of the
- 7:30best
- 7:30sports
- 7:30coaches
- 7:31weren't
- 7:31the best
- 7:32footballers
- 7:33or rugby
- 7:33players or
- 7:34tennis
- 7:35people
- 7:35themselves,
- 7:36but
- 7:36they've
- 7:37learned
- 7:37something
- 7:37else. So I
- 7:39think to
- 7:39answer
- 7:40your
- 7:40question,
- 7:40can you,
- 7:41can you be
- 7:41crap and
- 7:42be a good
- 7:43manager?
- 7:43Probably
- 7:44not, but
- 7:45you could
- 7:46get there.
- 7:46But you
- 7:47don't have
- 7:47to be
- 7:48amazing or
- 7:49an elite
- 7:50person to
- 7:50be able to
- 7:51do it. It
- 7:51feels like
- 7:52you need
- 7:52to usually
- 7:53play the
- 7:53sport,
- 7:54yeah, oh
- 7:55gosh,
- 7:55yeah,
- 7:55yeah. You
- 7:56need to
- 7:56have, you
- 7:57need to
- 7:57have done
- 7:57something
- 7:58in it, and
- 7:58you need
- 7:59to be able
- 7:59to carry
- 7:59some kind
- 8:00of
- 8:02Mark Ackers: experience
- 8:03and value
- 8:04and and,
- 8:06yeah, the
- 8:07big thing
- 8:08is about
- 8:08experience.
- 8:09People
- 8:10latch onto
- 8:10that
- 8:10because of
- 8:11the trust
- 8:11behind it.
- 8:12So here's
- 8:13something
- 8:13that's not
- 8:13It's not
- 8:14common,
- 8:14but it's
- 8:15not
- 8:15uncommon,
- 8:16and when I
- 8:16hear it on
- 8:18my
- 8:18discovery
- 8:18calls, I
- 8:19try to
- 8:20just hide
- 8:20my shock
- 8:23marketing
- 8:24managers
- 8:24being
- 8:25responsible
- 8:25for sales
- 8:26teams.
- 8:27What do
- 8:28you think
- 8:28are we
- 8:29still live
- 8:29set as it
- 8:30is?
- 8:30There's no
- 8:32nice, no,
- 8:33I agree.
- 8:34It's
- 8:35typically
- 8:35SDRs. SDRs
- 8:36feed into
- 8:37marketing
- 8:38because
- 8:38they're
- 8:38working on
- 8:39the leads,
- 8:39etc. But
- 8:40I've never
- 8:41understood
- 8:41that
- 8:41motion at
- 8:42all when I
- 8:42think it's
- 8:43crazy. And
- 8:44Unknown: no
- 8:44disrespect
- 8:45to
- 8:45marketeers,
- 8:46but again,
- 8:48it's a
- 8:48diff. It's
- 8:49a
- 8:49different
- 8:49kind of
- 8:49job.
- 8:50These,
- 8:50these jobs
- 8:50have got
- 8:51to gel
- 8:52together,
- 8:56Jigsaw
- 8:56into each
- 8:57other, if
- 8:57you like.
- 8:58But I
- 8:58think,
- 9:00yeah,
- 9:00yeah,
- 9:01sales is
- 9:02such a
- 9:03skill set.
- 9:05And
- 9:05there's
- 9:06probably
- 9:06some
- 9:06people
- 9:06that will
- 9:07watch this
- 9:07that will
- 9:08love what
- 9:08I'm going
- 9:09to say
- 9:09now, which
- 9:10it and it
- 9:10is a
- 9:11complex
- 9:11profession.
- 9:13And
- 9:13there's,
- 9:13there's a
- 9:14lot of
- 9:14people
- 9:14say, Oh,
- 9:15it's not a
- 9:15profession.
- 9:16And, yeah,
- 9:18it is. You
- 9:19can
- 9:19professionalize
- 9:20it. And I
- 9:20think,
- 9:21yeah,
- 9:21marketing
- 9:22is
- 9:22professional.
- 9:23Sales is
- 9:23professional,
- 9:24customer
- 9:25success,
- 9:26support,
- 9:27all these
- 9:28things
- 9:28work, but
- 9:28you I
- 9:30think it's
- 9:30a
- 9:30different
- 9:31discipline,
- 9:31marketing
- 9:32to sales
- 9:32definitely,
- 9:33Mark Ackers: totally
- 9:34agree.
- 9:35What are
- 9:36some of
- 9:36the
- 9:36misconceptions
- 9:38aspiring
- 9:38sales
- 9:39leaders
- 9:39have about
- 9:40the role
- 9:40of a sales
- 9:41leader. I
- 9:41Unknown: think
- 9:41the first
- 9:42one that
- 9:42springs
- 9:43straight
- 9:43to mind is
- 9:43that
- 9:44you're
- 9:44going to
- 9:44be the
- 9:44boss.
- 9:45You're now
- 9:45running
- 9:46things.
- 9:46You're
- 9:46you're
- 9:47now,
- 9:48you're now
- 9:49the
- 9:50leader,
- 9:50the boss.
- 9:51You know
- 9:51you're
- 9:51going to
- 9:52control
- 9:52stuff. And
- 9:54it's
- 9:54actually
- 9:55the flip
- 9:55of that. I
- 9:57I even
- 9:58talk to
- 9:58people
- 9:59and. About
- 10:00this
- 10:00where, if
- 10:01that's one
- 10:02of the
- 10:02things you
- 10:03think is
- 10:03going to
- 10:03be you've
- 10:05got 180
- 10:06degrees
- 10:07wrong, and
- 10:08actually
- 10:08you need
- 10:09to to turn
- 10:10that on
- 10:10his head.
- 10:11You're
- 10:11suddenly
- 10:12the the
- 10:13support
- 10:13person for
- 10:14the team.
- 10:15You're the
- 10:16you're the
- 10:17individual
- 10:17that's
- 10:18going to
- 10:18help them
- 10:19to be
- 10:19successful.
- 10:20You're
- 10:21also the
- 10:21person
- 10:22that's
- 10:22going to
- 10:23protect
- 10:24them from
- 10:24what comes
- 10:25down the
- 10:26hill from
- 10:27the C
- 10:28suite and
- 10:29the execs
- 10:29in the
- 10:29business
- 10:30as
- 10:30Mark Ackers: well.
- 10:30So you've,
- 10:32you know,
- 10:33if you
- 10:33think
- 10:34you're
- 10:34suddenly
- 10:35the boss,
- 10:36you're
- 10:37not, in
- 10:38fact,
- 10:38you've
- 10:38just
- 10:39completely
- 10:39twisted
- 10:40that
- 10:40around.
- 10:40And you
- 10:41said to me
- 10:41that when
- 10:42people do
- 10:43make the
- 10:43move to
- 10:44sales
- 10:45leader,
- 10:45they don't
- 10:46always
- 10:46have all
- 10:46the
- 10:47details
- 10:47before
- 10:47signing
- 10:48up. Is
- 10:49that what
- 10:49you're
- 10:49referring
- 10:50to there,
- 10:50or is
- 10:50there more
- 10:51details
- 10:51that
- 10:52you're
- 10:52referring
- 10:52to? I
- 10:53Unknown: think
- 10:54that's
- 10:54that's the
- 10:54that's the
- 10:55main
- 10:55that's the
- 10:55main
- 10:56details
- 10:56behind it,
- 10:57but it's
- 10:57also how
- 10:58to how to
- 10:59act in
- 11:00that in
- 11:01that role
- 11:01as well, I
- 11:02use
- 11:03another
- 11:03example of
- 11:06Alex
- 11:06Ferguson,
- 11:07who I know
- 11:08I'm in
- 11:08Newcastle,
- 11:09but yeah,
- 11:09you're
- 11:10Mark Ackers: in
- 11:10good
- 11:10company
- 11:11here, the
- 11:11greatest
- 11:12football
- 11:12manager in
- 11:12the world,
- 11:13Unknown: so
- 11:13but
- 11:13Ferguson
- 11:14was famous
- 11:14for making
- 11:16sure that
- 11:17he was
- 11:20taking the
- 11:21heat out
- 11:22of the
- 11:22situation.
- 11:23So if, if
- 11:26a game
- 11:26went badly
- 11:28and he was
- 11:29being
- 11:29interviewed,
- 11:30it's
- 11:31because he
- 11:31put people
- 11:32in the
- 11:32wrong
- 11:32places, he
- 11:33had the
- 11:34wrong
- 11:34strategy.
- 11:35He
- 11:36shouldn't
- 11:36have put
- 11:36so and so
- 11:37in a
- 11:37certain
- 11:37position,
- 11:38and it's
- 11:39down to
- 11:39him, all
- 11:40the refs,
- 11:41all the
- 11:42riffs,
- 11:42yeah,
- 11:43that's
- 11:43another
- 11:43option.
- 11:44But the
- 11:45the flip
- 11:46is also
- 11:46true. So
- 11:47if they
- 11:47walk away
- 11:48from a
- 11:48from a
- 11:49game, I
- 11:50don't two,
- 11:51three nil
- 11:51up or
- 11:51whatever,
- 11:53he would
- 11:53never take
- 11:54that glory
- 11:55whoever
- 11:55scored or
- 11:56whatever
- 11:56it was, it
- 11:57was, it
- 11:57was the
- 11:57setup and
- 11:58how they
- 11:59played
- 11:59together,
- 12:00how they
- 12:00made space
- 12:01for each
- 12:01other, so
- 12:02it was put
- 12:02back on
- 12:03them. And
- 12:03I think
- 12:03that's a
- 12:04that's a
- 12:05really
- 12:05great way
- 12:06of of
- 12:08explaining
- 12:08how the
- 12:09sales
- 12:10management
- 12:10works.
- 12:11Mark Ackers: I'm
- 12:11guessing
- 12:11you may
- 12:12have read
- 12:12it,
- 12:12because
- 12:12obviously
- 12:13you've
- 12:13referenced
- 12:13Alex
- 12:14Ferguson.
- 12:14But I
- 12:14think one
- 12:15of the
- 12:15best
- 12:15leadership
- 12:16books I've
- 12:17read is
- 12:18Alex
- 12:18Ferguson's
- 12:19book
- 12:19called
- 12:20leading.
- 12:21Yeah. It
- 12:21was co
- 12:21written
- 12:22with a
- 12:22chat
- 12:22called
- 12:22Michael.
- 12:23He's last
- 12:23time the
- 12:24number k,
- 12:24but I read
- 12:25that book
- 12:26a long
- 12:26time ago,
- 12:27and it
- 12:27made me
- 12:27realize
- 12:28he's not
- 12:29just the
- 12:30greatest
- 12:30football
- 12:30manager
- 12:31that ever
- 12:31lived.
- 12:31He's one
- 12:33of the
- 12:33greatest
- 12:34managers
- 12:34of people
- 12:35that
- 12:35lived.
- 12:36Yeah. Have
- 12:37you read
- 12:37the
- 12:37Unknown: book?
- 12:37Yeah,
- 12:38again,
- 12:39also a
- 12:39long time
- 12:40and a long
- 12:41time ago,
- 12:41but
- 12:42there's
- 12:42some,
- 12:42there's
- 12:43some
- 12:44learnings
- 12:44from that
- 12:44as well.
- 12:45For me
- 12:45was, and
- 12:46this is
- 12:46one of the
- 12:47other
- 12:47things
- 12:48that I'd
- 12:48say about
- 12:49the
- 12:49leadership
- 12:50side, is
- 12:50that it's
- 12:53understanding
- 12:53your own
- 12:54team's
- 12:54motivations
- 12:55and what's
- 12:56going on
- 12:56with with
- 12:57them. And
- 12:58I think
- 12:59Fergus
- 12:59talked
- 12:59about
- 13:00skulls and
- 13:01BEC and
- 13:01back at
- 13:01the back
- 13:02of the
- 13:02time. And
- 13:02what was,
- 13:03what was
- 13:04motivating
- 13:05the
- 13:05individuals,
- 13:08so that he
- 13:08could get
- 13:08the best
- 13:09out of out
- 13:10of people.
- 13:11And, yeah,
- 13:12it could
- 13:12be, you
- 13:13know,
- 13:13people are
- 13:14going to
- 13:14default in
- 13:15a sales
- 13:16role is
- 13:16going to
- 13:16be money.
- 13:17But is it?
- 13:18You know,
- 13:18what does
- 13:18the money
- 13:19do? What
- 13:19does the
- 13:20money
- 13:20bring I
- 13:22was, I was
- 13:22recently
- 13:23on, on a
- 13:24call with
- 13:24somebody
- 13:25who was
- 13:25talking
- 13:26about his
- 13:27own team,
- 13:27and one of
- 13:28the things
- 13:28I asked
- 13:29was, how
- 13:30much does
- 13:31he know
- 13:31about the
- 13:33team?
- 13:33He's,
- 13:33he's, he's
- 13:35leading.
- 13:35And we
- 13:36actually
- 13:36got that
- 13:37got to a
- 13:37point, and
- 13:37he was a
- 13:38little bit
- 13:38embarrassed
- 13:39by it, but
- 13:39I said,
- 13:39Well,
- 13:40look,
- 13:40don't be
- 13:40because
- 13:41I've seen
- 13:41this many
- 13:41times, but
- 13:42you've now
- 13:42got
- 13:42something
- 13:43to work
- 13:43on, where
- 13:45he didn't
- 13:45know he
- 13:46wasn't
- 13:46quite sure
- 13:47people's
- 13:47ages, he
- 13:48wasn't
- 13:48quite sure
- 13:49exactly
- 13:49where they
- 13:50lived, he
- 13:50wasn't
- 13:50sure who
- 13:51was
- 13:52married
- 13:52and who
- 13:52not, who
- 13:53had kids
- 13:53who
- 13:53didn't.
- 13:55And I
- 13:55think that
- 13:56you don't
- 13:57want to be
- 13:57intrusive
- 13:58into
- 13:58people's
- 13:59lives, but
- 14:00getting to
- 14:00know
- 14:01people,
- 14:02getting to
- 14:02know their
- 14:02motivations,
- 14:03understanding
- 14:04them as
- 14:06Alex
- 14:07Fergus,
- 14:08enables
- 14:08you to
- 14:09support
- 14:09people in
- 14:10the best
- 14:10possible
- 14:11way,
- 14:11through
- 14:11motivation.
- 14:12Yeah,
- 14:12absolutely.
- 14:13Mark Ackers: I
- 14:13always
- 14:13remember,
- 14:13actually,
- 14:14one of the
- 14:14things he
- 14:15would do
- 14:15is you'd
- 14:15understand
- 14:16not just
- 14:16who their
- 14:17parents
- 14:17were and
- 14:17where they
- 14:18lived, but
- 14:18who their
- 14:19grandparents
- 14:19were where
- 14:20they
- 14:20worked.
- 14:21And you
- 14:21talk a lot
- 14:22about
- 14:22that, but,
- 14:23you know,
- 14:23it's a
- 14:23fantastic
- 14:24book. I
- 14:24actually
- 14:24wrote a
- 14:25LinkedIn
- 14:25article
- 14:26many moons
- 14:26ago about
- 14:26like, five
- 14:27or six
- 14:27things I
- 14:28learned
- 14:28from their
- 14:28book.
- 14:29Okay, on
- 14:29leadership.
- 14:30I'll show
- 14:30you after
- 14:31this. But
- 14:31it was
- 14:31like
- 14:32pipeline
- 14:32generation.
- 14:33You always
- 14:33worked in
- 14:34four year
- 14:34cycles.
- 14:34Yeah. It
- 14:35was about
- 14:35motivation
- 14:36like that.
- 14:36Yeah,
- 14:36understanding
- 14:37is the the
- 14:38team, the
- 14:39family,
- 14:39motivates
- 14:39them. It
- 14:40was about
- 14:40recruitment.
- 14:41It was
- 14:41about the
- 14:42training.
- 14:43And I
- 14:43remember
- 14:44he had
- 14:44like, you
- 14:44know,
- 14:45someone
- 14:45dedicated
- 14:45just
- 14:46watching
- 14:46videos and
- 14:47just
- 14:47creating
- 14:47video
- 14:47clips. It
- 14:48was some
- 14:48really
- 14:49good book.
- 14:49Hello. I'm
- 14:50Mark the
- 14:50host of
- 14:51the I used
- 14:51to be crap
- 14:52at sales
- 14:52podcast.
- 14:53Thank you
- 14:53for
- 14:53listening.
- 14:54As a sales
- 14:54leader,
- 14:55you're
- 14:55responsible
- 14:56for the
- 14:56success of
- 14:56your sales
- 14:57team. That
- 14:57means you
- 14:58need to
- 14:58spend time
- 14:59coaching.
- 15:00And
- 15:00developing
- 15:00them,
- 15:00helping
- 15:01them fine
- 15:01tune the
- 15:02skill that
- 15:02is sales.
- 15:03Of course,
- 15:03the
- 15:04challenge
- 15:04is that
- 15:04can always
- 15:05wait till
- 15:05tomorrow.
- 15:06There's
- 15:06competing
- 15:07priorities,
- 15:07always
- 15:08taking you
- 15:08away from
- 15:09developing
- 15:10and
- 15:10coaching
- 15:10your sales
- 15:11team.
- 15:11That's
- 15:11where we
- 15:11come in.
- 15:12We can
- 15:12accelerate
- 15:13your
- 15:13team's
- 15:13development
- 15:14and
- 15:14performance
- 15:15by giving
- 15:15them
- 15:16access to
- 15:16one of our
- 15:17expert
- 15:18coaches.
- 15:18So what
- 15:19are some
- 15:19of the
- 15:19skills or
- 15:20knowledge
- 15:21areas that
- 15:22most first
- 15:23time
- 15:23sounds
- 15:23leaders
- 15:24lack, but
- 15:24are
- 15:24crucial
- 15:25for
- 15:25success in
- 15:26the role.
- 15:26Unknown: I
- 15:26think the
- 15:27the key
- 15:27thing I've
- 15:30proven to
- 15:30myself
- 15:31that makes
- 15:32a big
- 15:32impact is
- 15:34being able
- 15:35to really
- 15:36dig into
- 15:37details
- 15:38through
- 15:39through
- 15:39listening
- 15:40understanding
- 15:40situations.
- 15:42Yeah,
- 15:42well, that
- 15:42our whole
- 15:43sort of
- 15:43really
- 15:43being a
- 15:44good
- 15:44listener.
- 15:44You know,
- 15:45we talk
- 15:45about
- 15:46active
- 15:46listening
- 15:47now and
- 15:47paying
- 15:48attention
- 15:48to the to
- 15:49the
- 15:49detail.
- 15:50And
- 15:51everybody
- 15:52in the
- 15:52team will
- 15:52be very
- 15:53different.
- 15:54And so you
- 15:55need to
- 15:55peel back
- 15:56the layers
- 15:56of the
- 15:56onion, if
- 15:57you like,
- 15:57and get
- 15:58into the
- 15:58details
- 15:58things,
- 15:59but
- 15:59constantly
- 16:00listen.
- 16:01And, you
- 16:02know, be
- 16:03aware of
- 16:04what's
- 16:04going on.
- 16:05So I when
- 16:08I when I'm
- 16:09hearing
- 16:09other
- 16:10people,
- 16:10I'm
- 16:10reviewing
- 16:11those kind
- 16:11of one to
- 16:12one calls.
- 16:13Sometimes
- 16:13I feel
- 16:15like
- 16:15people are
- 16:15just going
- 16:16through
- 16:16the
- 16:16motions of
- 16:16a one to
- 16:17one, or
- 16:18they're
- 16:19just doing
- 16:20a check
- 16:20and
- 16:20balance of
- 16:21a deal
- 16:23with you
- 16:23or
- 16:23whatever,
- 16:23without
- 16:24really
- 16:24trying to
- 16:25get under
- 16:25the
- 16:25details of
- 16:26it, people
- 16:27skills.
- 16:27Then it's,
- 16:27only feels
- 16:28nice, it's
- 16:29people
- 16:29skills,
- 16:29but it's
- 16:30kind of,
- 16:31it's being
- 16:32prepared
- 16:33to go to
- 16:34the extra
- 16:35levels of
- 16:35detail on
- 16:36your
- 16:36questioning
- 16:37that
- 16:37really
- 16:38unpack
- 16:39what's
- 16:39going on,
- 16:40and
- 16:40therefore,
- 16:41then how
- 16:41you can
- 16:42help, how
- 16:43you can
- 16:43coach, how
- 16:43you can
- 16:44work with
- 16:45them on
- 16:45that
- 16:45basis.
- 16:46Because if
- 16:47it's too
- 16:47superficial,
- 16:49then
- 16:49you're
- 16:49really
- 16:49going to
- 16:50struggle.
- 16:50You won't
- 16:51really get
- 16:51Sure. Can
- 16:51you give
- 16:52Mark Ackers: me
- 16:52an example
- 16:53of where
- 16:53perhaps a
- 16:54conversation
- 16:54might take
- 16:55place,
- 16:55where it's
- 16:55superficial,
- 16:56an example
- 16:57of where a
- 16:57sales
- 16:58leader can
- 16:59dig deeper
- 16:59and get to
- 17:00the truth,
- 17:00and we can
- 17:00role play
- 17:01if you
- 17:01want.
- 17:01Well,
- 17:02Unknown: I
- 17:02think it's
- 17:03something.
- 17:03The other
- 17:03day,
- 17:04actually,
- 17:04I had a
- 17:04conversation
- 17:05with
- 17:05somebody
- 17:05where they
- 17:07were
- 17:07talking
- 17:07about a
- 17:08particular
- 17:09deal that
- 17:09was going
- 17:10going
- 17:10well, I
- 17:11and they
- 17:12were using
- 17:13language,
- 17:14and I
- 17:14reviewed
- 17:14the call
- 17:15with them,
- 17:15and it's
- 17:17like,
- 17:17yeah, they
- 17:17they said,
- 17:18everything's
- 17:18great,
- 17:19yeah, it's
- 17:19really,
- 17:19really
- 17:20good. And
- 17:21I said,
- 17:21Okay, and
- 17:22that's
- 17:22what
- 17:23you're
- 17:23saying,
- 17:23yeah,
- 17:23yeah. It's
- 17:24really,
- 17:24yeah. This
- 17:24deals
- 17:25brilliant.
- 17:25It's Yes,
- 17:26really,
- 17:26really
- 17:26good. And
- 17:28the guy
- 17:28was
- 17:28saying,
- 17:28okay, so
- 17:29it's on
- 17:30track and
- 17:30everything.
- 17:31Yep, it's
- 17:31on track,
- 17:32whatever.
- 17:33And then
- 17:33when, when
- 17:34we
- 17:34reviewed
- 17:34it
- 17:34afterwards,
- 17:35I was
- 17:35saying,
- 17:35Well,
- 17:36what? What
- 17:37does great
- 17:37mean? What
- 17:38does on
- 17:38track
- 17:39mean? And
- 17:40he said,
- 17:40well, that
- 17:40that means
- 17:41that,
- 17:41yeah, the
- 17:42pricing is
- 17:42good, the
- 17:43dates we
- 17:43put
- 17:43together
- 17:44is great.
- 17:45Everything's
- 17:45gonna work
- 17:46out. I
- 17:46said, does
- 17:48it? Yeah?
- 17:49Because
- 17:49you
- 17:49didn't,
- 17:50none of
- 17:50that was
- 17:50said. You
- 17:52assumed
- 17:52that,
- 17:53because
- 17:53they said
- 17:54to you,
- 17:54it's going
- 17:54great, but
- 17:56you didn't
- 17:57go any
- 17:57further
- 17:57with that.
- 17:58So and he
- 17:59said,
- 17:59Well, they
- 18:01said it
- 18:02was going
- 18:02great. I
- 18:02said,
- 18:03Yeah, but
- 18:03that's
- 18:03your DEF,
- 18:03his
- 18:04definition,
- 18:05and you've
- 18:05made an
- 18:06assumption.
- 18:07And I bet
- 18:08between
- 18:08you, him
- 18:10and the
- 18:11prospect,
- 18:11if I ask
- 18:12all three
- 18:12of you
- 18:12separately,
- 18:14you know,
- 18:14have
- 18:14different
- 18:15opinions.
- 18:15So that's
- 18:16kind of
- 18:16what I
- 18:16mean. I
- 18:17think you
- 18:17you'd need
- 18:18to dig
- 18:18deeper to
- 18:19make sure
- 18:20you can
- 18:21help
- 18:21support
- 18:21coach
- 18:22better.
- 18:23How
- 18:23Mark Ackers: can
- 18:23someone
- 18:24that right
- 18:25now isn't
- 18:26the first
- 18:26time
- 18:26leader, or
- 18:27someone
- 18:27that's
- 18:28just got
- 18:28in the
- 18:28rock how
- 18:29can they
- 18:29get that
- 18:30skill and
- 18:31experience?
- 18:31What are
- 18:31some of
- 18:32the things
- 18:32they can
- 18:32do to work
- 18:33on that?
- 18:33Unknown: That's
- 18:34a really
- 18:34good
- 18:34question,
- 18:34because I
- 18:35think the
- 18:35the
- 18:36opportunities
- 18:37are
- 18:38limited,
- 18:39but they
- 18:40are there.
- 18:40I think
- 18:41you need
- 18:41to make it
- 18:42happen
- 18:42yourself
- 18:43is one of
- 18:43the first
- 18:43things put
- 18:44yourself
- 18:45forward
- 18:47Mark Ackers: to
- 18:47your own
- 18:47manager.
- 18:48Maybe
- 18:48there's
- 18:49the maybe
- 18:50they're
- 18:50aware on a
- 18:50holiday or
- 18:51something,
- 18:52or they've
- 18:52got
- 18:52something
- 18:53else on
- 18:53and you
- 18:53could run
- 18:54a you
- 18:55could run
- 18:55a meeting
- 18:55yourself.
- 18:56Maybe
- 18:57there's
- 18:58opportunities
- 18:59for you to
- 19:00support
- 19:00your peers
- 19:01or
- 19:01somebody
- 19:01that's new
- 19:02into the
- 19:02group, but
- 19:04yeah, I
- 19:04would try
- 19:05to take
- 19:05opportunities
- 19:06to to sort
- 19:07of
- 19:07practice
- 19:08ahead of
- 19:08actually
- 19:09doing it
- 19:09for real,
- 19:10for sure.
- 19:10I think
- 19:11that's
- 19:11important.
- 19:12I've
- 19:12before had
- 19:13people
- 19:14that are
- 19:14SDRs want
- 19:15to be SDR
- 19:15managers,
- 19:16and we
- 19:16said,
- 19:16like, this
- 19:17is going
- 19:17to a long
- 19:18time, but
- 19:18like, a
- 19:19year long
- 19:19audition,
- 19:20yeah, and
- 19:20every
- 19:20quarter,
- 19:21they sort
- 19:22of almost
- 19:22unlock new
- 19:23responsibilities
- 19:24from me.
- 19:25Yeah. And
- 19:26I found
- 19:26that it
- 19:26starts off
- 19:27with, why
- 19:27did you
- 19:28lead some
- 19:28cool
- 19:28coaching?
- 19:29Um, got
- 19:30someone
- 19:30new
- 19:30joining.
- 19:31Can you
- 19:32shadow and
- 19:32help them
- 19:33and be
- 19:33their sort
- 19:34of buddy?
- 19:34And then
- 19:35it's, can
- 19:35you run a
- 19:36couple of
- 19:36one to
- 19:36ones for
- 19:37me? And
- 19:37then it's,
- 19:38could you
- 19:38get these
- 19:38reports
- 19:39for me?
- 19:39And then
- 19:40say you
- 19:40slowly get
- 19:41to the
- 19:41point
- 19:41where
- 19:42three
- 19:42months
- 19:42before the
- 19:43end of the
- 19:43year, it's
- 19:44like
- 19:45they're
- 19:45yours now,
- 19:45yeah, and
- 19:46so you get
- 19:47on, I
- 19:47think it
- 19:47has to be
- 19:48that soft
- 19:49launch,
- 19:50yeah,
- 19:50definitely
- 19:50don't do
- 19:51that. Do
- 19:51they
- 19:51normally
- 19:52just
- 19:52Unknown: promote
- 19:52it's
- 19:52incumbent
- 19:53on the
- 19:53individual
- 19:54themselves
- 19:55to to put
- 19:56themselves
- 19:56in that
- 19:57position
- 19:57in the
- 19:58first
- 19:58place. Um.
- 20:00Uh,
- 20:00personally,
- 20:01I've liked
- 20:01it when
- 20:03you know
- 20:04reports of
- 20:04mine have
- 20:05come
- 20:05forward
- 20:05and said
- 20:06they
- 20:06actually
- 20:06want that
- 20:07responsibility
- 20:08as well.
- 20:08So what I
- 20:09would say
- 20:10to people
- 20:10is, if you
- 20:12if you are
- 20:13considering
- 20:14that path,
- 20:15and again,
- 20:15check your
- 20:16reasons
- 20:16first of
- 20:17all. But
- 20:17if you are
- 20:17considering
- 20:18that path,
- 20:19then you
- 20:20know, put
- 20:22yourself
- 20:22forward
- 20:22for those
- 20:23sort of
- 20:23sort of
- 20:23opportunities.
- 20:25Make sure
- 20:26that your
- 20:27own
- 20:27manager is
- 20:27is aware
- 20:28of that,
- 20:29and I
- 20:29think that
- 20:30they would
- 20:31appreciate
- 20:31that as
- 20:32well, and
- 20:33it makes
- 20:33their life
- 20:34a little
- 20:34bit more
- 20:35interesting
- 20:35and maybe
- 20:36even
- 20:36easier.
- 20:36You've
- 20:37just taken
- 20:37a burden
- 20:38off
- 20:38somebody.
- 20:38Mark Ackers: That's
- 20:38always a
- 20:39great
- 20:39question
- 20:39that I've
- 20:40coached
- 20:41people
- 20:41myself to
- 20:41ask their
- 20:42manager,
- 20:42is there
- 20:43anything I
- 20:43can do to
- 20:44help you?
- 20:44Yeah, what
- 20:45can I take
- 20:45off your
- 20:46plate? And
- 20:47you start
- 20:47off with,
- 20:49I know
- 20:50when
- 20:50people
- 20:50have asked
- 20:50me this
- 20:51question,
- 20:51you start
- 20:52off by
- 20:52giving
- 20:52them the
- 20:53shit
- 20:53stuff,
- 20:53right? But
- 20:54when they
- 20:55start
- 20:55doing the
- 20:55job, you
- 20:56start
- 20:56giving
- 20:56them more
- 20:57and more
- 20:57and more
- 20:58and before
- 20:58they
- 20:58realize it
- 20:59that go to
- 20:59person.
- 21:00And I
- 21:00think
- 21:01that's a
- 21:01great
- 21:01question
- 21:01for
- 21:02anybody
- 21:02who asked
- 21:02their
- 21:03manager in
- 21:03a one to
- 21:03one, how's
- 21:04your day
- 21:05going?
- 21:05How's your
- 21:05week
- 21:05going?
- 21:06What's
- 21:06keeping
- 21:06you busy?
- 21:07Is there
- 21:07anything I
- 21:07can take
- 21:08off your
- 21:08plate,
- 21:09even if
- 21:09you're
- 21:09terrified
- 21:10there, say
- 21:10yes,
- 21:11because
- 21:11you won't
- 21:11know how
- 21:12to do it.
- 21:12I haven't
- 21:13asked you
- 21:13to do it.
- 21:13You need
- 21:14some help,
- 21:14and that's
- 21:15a great
- 21:15way to
- 21:16learn. I
- 21:16Unknown: think
- 21:16you could
- 21:17also not
- 21:18just ask
- 21:18them what.
- 21:20I think
- 21:20you could
- 21:21also offer
- 21:21up your
- 21:23opinion
- 21:23and a
- 21:24specific a
- 21:26specific
- 21:26offer. So
- 21:28rather
- 21:29than
- 21:29saying, Is
- 21:30there
- 21:30anything I
- 21:30can help
- 21:31with? Say,
- 21:32look, I
- 21:32know
- 21:32you've got
- 21:33a lot on
- 21:34your plate
- 21:34at the
- 21:35moment.
- 21:35You've got
- 21:36those
- 21:37reports
- 21:37you're
- 21:37trying to
- 21:38do for the
- 21:39for the
- 21:39exec,
- 21:40we've got
- 21:41a pipeline
- 21:41review
- 21:42meeting. I
- 21:43could run
- 21:43that for
- 21:43you if you
- 21:44want. I
- 21:44could try
- 21:44and help
- 21:45with that.
- 21:45Would that
- 21:46be useful?
- 21:46Yeah, be
- 21:47specific.
- 21:48Be be
- 21:49pushy. And
- 21:49that same
- 21:50tactic
- 21:50works at
- 21:50any level,
- 21:51you know,
- 21:52if you're
- 21:52even a
- 21:53first time
- 21:53manager.
- 21:53Now, that
- 21:54works if
- 21:55you want
- 21:55to go to
- 21:56the next
- 21:56show,
- 21:56absolutely.
- 21:57Um, talk
- 21:58about
- 21:58mindsets.
- 21:59If I said
- 22:00to you
- 22:00list a few
- 22:02of the
- 22:02traits of
- 22:03a top
- 22:04performing
- 22:04IC mindset
- 22:06wise, what
- 22:06would you
- 22:07say
- 22:07individual
- 22:08contributors
- 22:08should be
- 22:10very, very
- 22:11focused.
- 22:12Okay, so
- 22:13very
- 22:13focused.
- 22:14It's got
- 22:14to be
- 22:15diligent
- 22:16and
- 22:16methodical
- 22:17about what
- 22:17they what
- 22:18they're
- 22:18actually
- 22:18doing,
- 22:19okay? And
- 22:21I think
- 22:22also keep
- 22:24keep sort
- 22:25of zooming
- 22:26out of the
- 22:27the sort
- 22:28of the
- 22:28weeds they
- 22:29might be
- 22:29in in a
- 22:29particular
- 22:31deal or
- 22:31account or
- 22:32something
- 22:32going on,
- 22:32and keep
- 22:33taking a
- 22:34check of
- 22:34the bigger
- 22:35picture of
- 22:36what's
- 22:36going on.
- 22:36And that
- 22:38one, the
- 22:38last one
- 22:39of the
- 22:39last
- 22:39things I'd
- 22:40say as
- 22:40well, is
- 22:40just keep
- 22:43on
- 22:43qualifying.
- 22:43That's one
- 22:44of my
- 22:44little
- 22:44mantras to
- 22:45people
- 22:46I've
- 22:46worked
- 22:46with is,
- 22:48you know,
- 22:48right?
- 22:48I've moved
- 22:49from the
- 22:50ABC of
- 22:51always be
- 22:51closing to
- 22:52always be
- 22:52qualifying.
- 22:53I think
- 22:54it's
- 22:54important
- 22:55to just
- 22:55check
- 22:56yourself
- 22:56all the
- 22:57way
- 22:57through.
- 22:57And that's
- 22:58what I've
- 22:58seen, that
- 22:58the top
- 22:59guys do, I
- 23:00don't know
- 23:00the
- 23:00Mark Ackers: word
- 23:00selfish.
- 23:01No,
- 23:02they've
- 23:02got to be
- 23:03sort of
- 23:03focused on
- 23:04themselves
- 23:04and their
- 23:04opportunities,
- 23:05etc, to
- 23:07close on
- 23:07BEC,
- 23:07that's
- 23:07what you
- 23:08typically
- 23:08see top
- 23:09people do,
- 23:09like they
- 23:10don't mess
- 23:10around
- 23:11with other
- 23:11things.
- 23:12They're
- 23:12focused on
- 23:13themselves.
- 23:13Yeah,
- 23:14Unknown: I
- 23:14think I
- 23:14would not
- 23:15necessarily
- 23:16focus on
- 23:17themselves,
- 23:17but
- 23:17they're,
- 23:18they're
- 23:18myopic in
- 23:19the sense
- 23:19of needing
- 23:21to get
- 23:21something
- 23:22to a
- 23:22conclusion,
- 23:23yeah, and
- 23:24I think
- 23:24that it's
- 23:25also how
- 23:26you define
- 23:27that as
- 23:27well. So
- 23:28one of the
- 23:29other
- 23:31pieces of
- 23:32advice, or
- 23:32something
- 23:32I
- 23:32sometimes
- 23:33work with
- 23:33people on,
- 23:34is is make
- 23:36sure you
- 23:36get to an
- 23:37absolute
- 23:38on
- 23:38something
- 23:39so in a
- 23:41deal is
- 23:41either
- 23:41going to
- 23:42close or
- 23:42not, or
- 23:44the next
- 23:44meeting is
- 23:45either
- 23:45going to
- 23:45happen or
- 23:46not, or
- 23:47the
- 23:47proposal
- 23:48was either
- 23:48accepted
- 23:49or it
- 23:49wasn't, I
- 23:50think
- 23:51really
- 23:51good. Top
- 23:53sales
- 23:53people
- 23:54make sure
- 23:54they got
- 23:54to an
- 23:55absolute
- 23:55rather
- 23:55than Yeah,
- 23:56they
- 23:56thought it
- 23:56was okay,
- 23:57and we're
- 23:57going to
- 23:58review it
- 23:58next week,
- 23:58and it
- 23:59just you
- 23:59had that
- 23:59continuousness
- 24:00going on.
- 24:01So
- 24:01Mark Ackers: we've
- 24:01got the
- 24:02traits of
- 24:02an IC now,
- 24:03yeah, what
- 24:04are the
- 24:04traits of
- 24:04a
- 24:05successful
- 24:05manager?
- 24:06Yeah, I
- 24:06want to
- 24:07see how
- 24:07many
- 24:07overlap
- 24:08you see,
- 24:08Unknown: yeah,
- 24:08so, so a
- 24:09few of
- 24:09those
- 24:10overlap,
- 24:10but it's
- 24:10more, for
- 24:11me, I
- 24:12think it's
- 24:12more the
- 24:12understanding
- 24:13of those.
- 24:14So you've
- 24:15got a team
- 24:16of
- 24:16different
- 24:16individuals,
- 24:17and again,
- 24:19a quick a
- 24:19side
- 24:19story. I
- 24:20one of my
- 24:21disasters
- 24:21early on
- 24:22was
- 24:23creating a
- 24:24team of
- 24:24mini me's.
- 24:25It was an
- 24:26absolute
- 24:26nightmare.
- 24:27I thought,
- 24:28I do I do
- 24:29it. Okay?
- 24:30I do it
- 24:30well, so I
- 24:31just get
- 24:32everybody
- 24:32to do it
- 24:32my way.
- 24:33And I said
- 24:34to you off
- 24:35camera,
- 24:35one of my
- 24:35favorite
- 24:36quotes is,
- 24:37you know,
- 24:38one of
- 24:38Branson's,
- 24:39which is,
- 24:40you know,
- 24:40we hire
- 24:40great
- 24:41people,
- 24:41and then
- 24:41we tell
- 24:42them what
- 24:42to do, and
- 24:42that's
- 24:43what I was
- 24:43doing, and
- 24:45that's
- 24:46that's
- 24:46completely
- 24:46wrong,
- 24:47because
- 24:47there's
- 24:47many
- 24:47different
- 24:48ways of of
- 24:49completing
- 24:50what
- 24:51you're
- 24:51trying to
- 24:52achieve,
- 24:52and people
- 24:53would do
- 24:53it in
- 24:53different
- 24:53ways. So
- 24:55your job,
- 24:55from the
- 24:56manager
- 24:56point of
- 24:57view, is,
- 24:57is trying
- 24:57to
- 24:57understand
- 24:59specifically.
- 25:00Where
- 25:00people's
- 25:01strengths
- 25:02and
- 25:02weaknesses
- 25:04opportunities
- 25:04are, and
- 25:06supporting
- 25:06those
- 25:07specifically
- 25:08in those
- 25:09opportunities
- 25:09with those
- 25:10individuals,
- 25:11rather
- 25:11than just
- 25:12being
- 25:14Mark Ackers: focused
- 25:14on it,
- 25:14doing it
- 25:15one
- 25:15particular
- 25:16way. So
- 25:16you
- 25:16mentioned
- 25:16a lot of
- 25:17interesting
- 25:17things
- 25:18there. I
- 25:18definitely
- 25:18want to
- 25:19get on to
- 25:20the
- 25:20mistake of
- 25:20hiring
- 25:21your words
- 25:22many use,
- 25:22yeah,
- 25:23don't do
- 25:23that,
- 25:24because I
- 25:24want to
- 25:25talk
- 25:25about,
- 25:25like,
- 25:25leading
- 25:26diverse
- 25:26teams. But
- 25:27before we
- 25:27get to
- 25:27that, I
- 25:29feel like
- 25:29I've still
- 25:29not got
- 25:30the answer
- 25:30that I'm
- 25:31looking
- 25:31for in the
- 25:32sense of
- 25:34the
- 25:34different
- 25:35personality
- 25:35traits of
- 25:37a
- 25:37successful
- 25:38IC, okay,
- 25:39and a
- 25:39sales
- 25:39manager,
- 25:40because
- 25:41that is
- 25:41often who
- 25:42becomes a
- 25:42sales
- 25:42manager, a
- 25:43successful
- 25:44IC. And I
- 25:45know that
- 25:46it's
- 25:46totally
- 25:47new
- 25:47personality
- 25:48traits
- 25:48that are
- 25:49needed,
- 25:49and that's
- 25:50where it
- 25:50sort of
- 25:50falls
- 25:51down.
- 25:51What? So
- 25:51we've
- 25:52covered
- 25:52the traits
- 25:52to an
- 25:53individual
- 25:53I see that
- 25:54successful,
- 25:55yeah, what
- 25:55are the
- 25:55traits
- 25:56needed to
- 25:56be a
- 25:57successful
- 25:57sales
- 25:57leader? To
- 25:58build
- 25:59Unknown: on
- 25:59your one
- 26:00you didn't
- 26:00want to
- 26:00use the
- 26:01selfishness.
- 26:02It's not a
- 26:03complete
- 26:04opposite
- 26:04to it, but
- 26:05empathy
- 26:06and
- 26:06understanding
- 26:07and
- 26:07support is
- 26:08kind of,
- 26:10you know,
- 26:10strong
- 26:11values
- 26:12that and
- 26:14traits, if
- 26:14you like,
- 26:15that
- 26:15somebody
- 26:15in the
- 26:16management
- 26:16position
- 26:17needs to
- 26:17have. I
- 26:17feel, and
- 26:20and I
- 26:20don't mean
- 26:21that in a
- 26:21sort of
- 26:22soft way,
- 26:23as though
- 26:23you got
- 26:23to, you
- 26:24know that
- 26:24can be
- 26:25tough love
- 26:26as well,
- 26:26but you've
- 26:27got to be
- 26:27the person
- 26:28that is,
- 26:30is
- 26:30supportive
- 26:31and
- 26:32empathizes
- 26:32with
- 26:33positions,
- 26:34digs in to
- 26:35understand
- 26:36things,
- 26:36can see
- 26:38the bigger
- 26:38picture,
- 26:39and Can
- 26:39and work
- 26:40in a way,
- 26:41to coach
- 26:42the people
- 26:43that
- 26:44you're
- 26:44working
- 26:45with that
- 26:45are in
- 26:45there, in
- 26:46your team.
- 26:47And so I
- 26:48think
- 26:48you've
- 26:49got,
- 26:49rather the
- 26:50ICs are
- 26:51completely
- 26:53myopically
- 26:54focused,
- 26:55and let's
- 26:56use it
- 26:57selfish on
- 26:58what
- 26:58they're
- 26:58doing. But
- 26:59as a as a
- 27:01leader.
- 27:01You can't,
- 27:01you can't
- 27:02be you've
- 27:03you've got
- 27:03a you're
- 27:04looking at
- 27:04them, not
- 27:05the deal.
- 27:05You're
- 27:05looking at
- 27:06the team.
- 27:06You're
- 27:06looking at
- 27:07what the
- 27:07company is
- 27:07doing.
- 27:08You've got
- 27:09a wider
- 27:09set of
- 27:09responsibilities.
- 27:11Mark Ackers: Here's
- 27:11here's the
- 27:12difficulty
- 27:12that I'm
- 27:12seeing,
- 27:13and it's
- 27:13just a
- 27:13good
- 27:14conversation.
- 27:15Is empathy
- 27:15something
- 27:16that you
- 27:16either
- 27:16have or
- 27:17don't
- 27:17have, or
- 27:17is it
- 27:18something
- 27:18you can
- 27:18learn? Can
- 27:19Unknown: you
- 27:19learn
- 27:20empathy?
- 27:20That's a
- 27:21that's a
- 27:21great one.
- 27:22I'm not
- 27:22sure. I'm
- 27:23not sure.
- 27:24I think, I
- 27:26think you
- 27:26can become
- 27:27more
- 27:27empathetic
- 27:29over time,
- 27:31and I
- 27:31think you
- 27:31realize
- 27:32and
- 27:32understand
- 27:34the the
- 27:34importance
- 27:35of that.
- 27:36But I
- 27:36would also
- 27:37say,
- 27:37actually,
- 27:38you know,
- 27:38you
- 27:39probably
- 27:39need to be
- 27:40a little
- 27:40bit hard
- 27:41and nose
- 27:41when
- 27:41you're
- 27:42when
- 27:42you're an
- 27:43IC
- 27:43yourself.
- 27:44And maybe
- 27:46there
- 27:46isn't as
- 27:47much
- 27:47empathy in
- 27:48in that,
- 27:49in that as
- 27:50a trait of
- 27:51an
- 27:51individual.
- 27:52But
- 27:53definitely
- 27:54you need
- 27:54to have
- 27:54that. And
- 27:55can you
- 27:55learn it?
- 27:56I think, I
- 27:57think
- 27:57you'll
- 27:58get,
- 27:58you'll
- 27:58become
- 27:59more
- 27:59empathetic
- 27:59as you get
- 28:00more
- 28:01experienced
- 28:01or older,
- 28:02if I'm
- 28:02allowed to
- 28:03say older,
- 28:05because
- 28:05that
- 28:05that's
- 28:05how,
- 28:06that's how
- 28:06I think
- 28:07people
- 28:07naturally
- 28:07develop.
- 28:08They're
- 28:09more
- 28:09understanding
- 28:10of their
- 28:10environments,
- 28:11that
- 28:11they're
- 28:11more
- 28:12empathetic
- 28:13about
- 28:13what's
- 28:13going on.
- 28:15Mark Ackers: It's
- 28:15just in
- 28:16sales
- 28:17every
- 28:18month,
- 28:18every
- 28:19quarter,
- 28:20there's
- 28:20targets to
- 28:20be here.
- 28:21Yeah,
- 28:21there's
- 28:21pressure
- 28:22from every
- 28:22direction.
- 28:23Sure, not
- 28:24only you
- 28:24trying to
- 28:25bring in
- 28:25new logos.
- 28:26You're
- 28:26sometimes
- 28:27having to
- 28:27pick up
- 28:28the slack
- 28:28from
- 28:29churn,
- 28:30right? And
- 28:30that gets
- 28:31added to
- 28:31your
- 28:31target. It
- 28:32can be a
- 28:33hard time
- 28:35to have
- 28:35empathy
- 28:36when you
- 28:36feel like
- 28:37everything's
- 28:38against
- 28:38you and
- 28:39you're
- 28:39just
- 28:39living on
- 28:40their
- 28:40hamster
- 28:40every
- 28:41month,
- 28:41every
- 28:41quarter.
- 28:43And
- 28:43empathy
- 28:43doesn't
- 28:44help you
- 28:44when
- 28:44you're
- 28:45forecasting
- 28:46deals and
- 28:47putting
- 28:48numbers
- 28:48across to
- 28:49the people
- 28:49above you,
- 28:50I can see
- 28:50why sales
- 28:51do the
- 28:51struggle
- 28:51with
- 28:52Unknown: that.
- 28:52Yeah, no,
- 28:52I do too,
- 28:53but so
- 28:54don't,
- 28:55don't
- 28:55make,
- 28:55don't make
- 28:55this sort
- 28:56of leap
- 28:58between
- 28:59empathy
- 28:59and being
- 29:00soft on
- 29:01this or,
- 29:02or just
- 29:03saying,
- 29:03Oh, well,
- 29:03that, you
- 29:04know,
- 29:04never
- 29:04mind. Is
- 29:05really,
- 29:05really
- 29:05tough. I'm
- 29:05not saying
- 29:06that kind
- 29:07of
- 29:07empathy,
- 29:07being
- 29:07empathetic
- 29:08in that
- 29:08is, is
- 29:09understanding
- 29:10somebody's
- 29:10situation,
- 29:11is
- 29:11understanding
- 29:12how
- 29:12they're
- 29:12doing it,
- 29:13is
- 29:13understanding
- 29:14the
- 29:15pressures
- 29:16and maybe
- 29:16the the
- 29:18the
- 29:18different
- 29:19ways they
- 29:19need to
- 29:20work in a
- 29:20certain
- 29:20situation,
- 29:21so by
- 29:23being more
- 29:23empathetic
- 29:24your
- 29:24understanding
- 29:25of the
- 29:25situation,
- 29:26and
- 29:26therefore
- 29:27you're
- 29:28then
- 29:28better
- 29:28positioned
- 29:29to help,
- 29:30support,
- 29:31coach,
- 29:31advise,
- 29:32whatever
- 29:32you need
- 29:32to do. But
- 29:33you can't
- 29:34do that
- 29:35unless
- 29:36you've
- 29:36really
- 29:37understood
- 29:37them at a
- 29:38at a
- 29:39pretty
- 29:39decent,
- 29:40detailed
- 29:41level,
- 29:41Mark Ackers: and
- 29:42that's
- 29:42only
- 29:43harder
- 29:43when you
- 29:44imagine
- 29:44remote
- 29:45teams.
- 29:45What do
- 29:45you think
- 29:46would
- 29:46happen if
- 29:46your sales
- 29:47team had
- 29:48on demand
- 29:48access to
- 29:49a sales
- 29:50expert,
- 29:50someone
- 29:50that
- 29:51wasn't
- 29:51their
- 29:51boss,
- 29:51someone
- 29:52that
- 29:52wasn't
- 29:52connected
- 29:53to the
- 29:53company
- 29:53goal,
- 29:54someone
- 29:54that was
- 29:54simply
- 29:55there to
- 29:55help them
- 29:56grow and
- 29:57develop
- 29:57their
- 29:57skill set.
- 29:58What do
- 29:58you think
- 29:58would
- 29:58happen to
- 29:59your sales
- 29:59team?
- 30:00Team, if
- 30:00they could
- 30:00have that
- 30:01time with
- 30:01a sales
- 30:01expert
- 30:02whenever
- 30:02they
- 30:02needed it.
- 30:03What
- 30:03results do
- 30:04you think
- 30:04you would
- 30:04see? Why
- 30:05not find
- 30:06out? Speak
- 30:06to my
- 30:06sales
- 30:07coach, and
- 30:07we'll
- 30:07share how
- 30:08we can
- 30:08help.
- 30:08Unknown: Yeah,
- 30:09I struggle
- 30:10with the
- 30:10whole
- 30:10thing
- 30:10about
- 30:12remote
- 30:12teams,
- 30:13maybe
- 30:13because I
- 30:14don't
- 30:14know. I'm
- 30:15a Gen Xer
- 30:16and I like
- 30:16being out
- 30:16in front
- 30:17of people
- 30:17more, and
- 30:18everything's
- 30:19moving to
- 30:20zoom. I've
- 30:21managed to
- 30:21adjust my
- 30:22own kind
- 30:22of work,
- 30:23but I do
- 30:25find that
- 30:26being in
- 30:26front of
- 30:27people,
- 30:28trying to
- 30:28make those
- 30:29trying to
- 30:30have that
- 30:30opportunity,
- 30:31is really,
- 30:32really
- 30:32important.
- 30:32So
- 30:33actually,
- 30:33it's good
- 30:33that you
- 30:34mentioned
- 30:34that. I
- 30:34think that
- 30:35you know
- 30:36where you
- 30:36can just
- 30:37get out in
- 30:38front of
- 30:38people and
- 30:40talk to
- 30:40people I
- 30:41was, I was
- 30:41actually
- 30:42talking to
- 30:42my son
- 30:44yesterday
- 30:44about
- 30:45this. He's
- 30:46He's 25
- 30:47he's in a
- 30:47sales role
- 30:48himself
- 30:48now. And
- 30:52one of the
- 30:52things he
- 30:53one of the
- 30:53things he
- 30:53said to me
- 30:54was about
- 30:56different
- 30:57communication
- 30:57channels,
- 30:58and there
- 30:59was a
- 30:59situation
- 31:00which is
- 31:00going back
- 31:01and forth
- 31:01over email
- 31:03three or
- 31:03four
- 31:03times,
- 31:04just pick
- 31:04up the
- 31:04phone. And
- 31:05he picked
- 31:05up the
- 31:06phone. And
- 31:06I was
- 31:06thinking
- 31:07like, Oh,
- 31:07hallelujah.
- 31:07He just,
- 31:08you know,
- 31:08and he
- 31:09said,
- 31:09yeah, just
- 31:09pick up
- 31:09the phone.
- 31:10Just talk
- 31:10to I went,
- 31:11Yes. And I
- 31:12think
- 31:12that, you
- 31:13know, talk
- 31:13to people,
- 31:14meet with
- 31:14people,
- 31:15get in
- 31:15front of
- 31:15people.
- 31:16That's,
- 31:16that's
- 31:16when that
- 31:16happens.
- 31:17And the
- 31:18story you
- 31:18told was
- 31:19the the
- 31:20individual
- 31:22in the
- 31:22email was
- 31:23really
- 31:23cross
- 31:23about
- 31:24something
- 31:24that had
- 31:25happened
- 31:25in the
- 31:25business.
- 31:26Nothing to
- 31:26do with
- 31:26him. It
- 31:27was a it
- 31:28was a
- 31:28support
- 31:28call or
- 31:29something.
- 31:30And the
- 31:30support
- 31:30guy said,
- 31:31well, I
- 31:31need this
- 31:31information.
- 31:32And he
- 31:33said,
- 31:33Well,
- 31:33you've
- 31:33already
- 31:33got it.
- 31:34This is
- 31:34going back
- 31:35and forth.
- 31:36And Oscar,
- 31:39my son,
- 31:39phone,
- 31:39phoned him
- 31:40up and
- 31:42said, Hey,
- 31:45are you
- 31:45having a
- 31:46problem
- 31:46with this?
- 31:46Do you
- 31:47know what
- 31:47the first
- 31:48thing this
- 31:48guy said?
- 31:49He said,
- 31:50Oscar, I'm
- 31:51so I'm so
- 31:51sorry. I
- 31:51probably
- 31:52was just,
- 31:52you know,
- 31:52ranting
- 31:53that poor
- 31:54guy. I
- 31:54didn't, I
- 31:54didn't
- 31:54mean to do
- 31:55that.
- 31:55Thank
- 31:55Thanks for
- 31:56calling.
- 31:56Yeah, we
- 31:56got a
- 31:57problem
- 31:57with so
- 31:57and so he
- 31:58apologized
- 31:59straight
- 32:00away,
- 32:00because he
- 32:01knew as
- 32:01well. So I
- 32:01think, you
- 32:03know,
- 32:03empathy
- 32:04can go a
- 32:04long way
- 32:05when you
- 32:05actually
- 32:06have a
- 32:06conversation,
- 32:07or you're
- 32:07in front
- 32:07of
- 32:08somebody,
- 32:08or you're
- 32:08talking to
- 32:09Mark Ackers: I
- 32:10totally
- 32:10agree. I
- 32:11always use
- 32:11the same
- 32:11example.
- 32:12You might
- 32:12have heard
- 32:13it, but
- 32:13just how
- 32:14the
- 32:14written
- 32:14word could
- 32:15be lost.
- 32:15Oh yeah.
- 32:16So the
- 32:17sentence
- 32:18if you
- 32:18heard is,
- 32:19I didn't
- 32:19say she
- 32:20stole the
- 32:20money.
- 32:20Have you
- 32:21heard of
- 32:21this
- 32:21example? I
- 32:22think I
- 32:22know where
- 32:23you're
- 32:23going with
- 32:23it. So
- 32:24basically,
- 32:24that
- 32:24sentence,
- 32:25I didn't
- 32:25say she
- 32:26stole the
- 32:26money. You
- 32:27can
- 32:27emphasize
- 32:28any word,
- 32:29and the
- 32:29sentence
- 32:30completely
- 32:30changes
- 32:31the
- 32:31meaning.
- 32:31Yeah, it's
- 32:32a pick up
- 32:32random
- 32:33word about
- 32:33that
- 32:33sentence,
- 32:34money. I
- 32:35didn't say
- 32:35she stole
- 32:36the money,
- 32:37right? We
- 32:38know what
- 32:38I mean.
- 32:38Now, pick
- 32:38a
- 32:39different
- 32:39word, say,
- 32:42I didn't
- 32:42say if you
- 32:44stole the
- 32:44money.
- 32:44Totally
- 32:45different,
- 32:45interesting.
- 32:46I reckon
- 32:47I've asked
- 32:47people to
- 32:48pick a
- 32:48word
- 32:49couple 100
- 32:50times.
- 32:50Everyone
- 32:51always
- 32:51picks the
- 32:51word
- 32:52stole, but
- 32:52you went
- 32:52for money.
- 32:53No,
- 32:53because I
- 32:54knew that
- 32:54you
- 32:55probably
- 32:55knew that
- 32:55you wanted
- 32:56me to say
- 32:56stole,
- 32:57yeah, but
- 32:57that's my
- 32:58point.
- 32:58When
- 32:58you're
- 32:58reading an
- 32:59email,
- 32:59yeah, you
- 33:00read it
- 33:01how you
- 33:02want to
- 33:02read it,
- 33:03not
- 33:03necessarily
- 33:04how it's
- 33:04been
- 33:04written.
- 33:05This comes
- 33:06back down
- 33:06to being
- 33:06under
- 33:06pressure.
- 33:07Yeah,
- 33:07Unknown: it
- 33:07does. And
- 33:08I think
- 33:10you raise
- 33:10a good
- 33:10point on
- 33:11that, and
- 33:11it's also
- 33:12true with
- 33:13I mean, I
- 33:14don't work
- 33:14with a lot
- 33:15of SDR
- 33:17outbound
- 33:18team,
- 33:18because I
- 33:18know that
- 33:18we've got
- 33:19some
- 33:19people
- 33:19that do a
- 33:20brilliant
- 33:20job of
- 33:20that, much
- 33:21better
- 33:21than I
- 33:21would ever
- 33:22do. But I
- 33:23one of the
- 33:24things
- 33:24that comes
- 33:25across
- 33:25when I
- 33:25have seen
- 33:27and
- 33:27listened
- 33:27to those
- 33:27conversations
- 33:28is also
- 33:29the
- 33:30tonality
- 33:30in what
- 33:31people do.
- 33:32So you
- 33:33know, one
- 33:33that I
- 33:33think, one
- 33:34of the
- 33:34worst
- 33:34things
- 33:34that I've
- 33:35I can, I
- 33:36still hear
- 33:37and see,
- 33:38is when
- 33:38people are
- 33:38given
- 33:39scripts,
- 33:40unless you
- 33:41can get
- 33:42into a way
- 33:44of
- 33:44talking,
- 33:45get your
- 33:45tonality
- 33:46right,
- 33:46your pace,
- 33:47your
- 33:48cadence,
- 33:48everything's
- 33:49going on,
- 33:50you could
- 33:50come
- 33:51across
- 33:51really,
- 33:52really
- 33:52awkward.
- 33:53You can
- 33:53Mark Ackers: tell
- 33:53when
- 33:53someone's
- 33:54reading
- 33:54from a
- 33:55script.
- 33:55Yeah, I
- 33:56believe
- 33:56you should
- 33:56have a
- 33:56script,
- 33:57but it's
- 33:57more how I
- 33:58would
- 33:58describe
- 33:59if I was
- 34:00gonna get
- 34:00in the car
- 34:01now, yeah,
- 34:01with you
- 34:02and drive
- 34:02to
- 34:02Manchester,
- 34:03I could
- 34:04get you
- 34:04there. No
- 34:04bother.
- 34:05I've done
- 34:05that drive
- 34:06hundreds
- 34:06of times.
- 34:07I still
- 34:07have a sat
- 34:08nav on. I
- 34:09don't
- 34:09stare at
- 34:10it because
- 34:10I'd crash,
- 34:11sure,
- 34:11because
- 34:12we'd be
- 34:12deep in
- 34:12conversation.
- 34:14I know I'd
- 34:14miss the
- 34:15exit
- 34:15because
- 34:16I'm just,
- 34:16I'm not so
- 34:17I sort of
- 34:18feel like
- 34:18script
- 34:19should be
- 34:19just that
- 34:20safety
- 34:20net, that
- 34:21checkpoint
- 34:22that you
- 34:22sort of
- 34:22just
- 34:23glance at
- 34:23when you
- 34:23need it.
- 34:24But yeah,
- 34:25when
- 34:25someone
- 34:25SAT
- 34:26reading
- 34:26from a
- 34:27script,
- 34:27kind of
- 34:27like this.
- 34:28Now I've
- 34:28got stuff
- 34:29in front
- 34:29of me, but
- 34:30I'm not
- 34:31word for
- 34:31word you.
- 34:32It's kind
- 34:32of makes
- 34:33me feel
- 34:33good,
- 34:33yeah,
- 34:33sure, but
- 34:34yeah, I
- 34:35see a
- 34:35point and
- 34:37what, what
- 34:38are some
- 34:38of the
- 34:38common
- 34:38challenges
- 34:39then that
- 34:39first time
- 34:40sales
- 34:40leader
- 34:41face
- 34:41depends
- 34:42Unknown: on
- 34:42the
- 34:42situation.
- 34:43I was
- 34:43working
- 34:43with
- 34:44somebody
- 34:44recently
- 34:45who moved
- 34:46into a
- 34:47leadership
- 34:47role where
- 34:49it was his
- 34:50peers that
- 34:51he was he
- 34:52was
- 34:52working
- 34:52with, and
- 34:54we're
- 34:54going
- 34:54through
- 34:55some
- 34:57conversations
- 34:58and
- 34:58exploring
- 34:59some ways.
- 35:00Of of
- 35:01working
- 35:01that out,
- 35:02because
- 35:03one
- 35:03minute,
- 35:04he's one
- 35:05of the
- 35:05boys and
- 35:05one of the
- 35:06gang and
- 35:06having
- 35:07some fun
- 35:07and
- 35:07whatever.
- 35:08Now, you
- 35:09know, now
- 35:09he's the
- 35:09boss. And
- 35:10actually,
- 35:11first time
- 35:11we went to
- 35:11he said,
- 35:12Well,
- 35:12you're not
- 35:12the boss.
- 35:13You've now
- 35:13just got a
- 35:14different
- 35:14job. But
- 35:15the I
- 35:16think it's
- 35:16whether
- 35:17you're
- 35:17inheriting
- 35:18a team,
- 35:18whether
- 35:19you're
- 35:19growing a
- 35:19team,
- 35:20whether
- 35:20you you've
- 35:21moved into
- 35:21a role in
- 35:22a
- 35:22different
- 35:22organization,
- 35:24there is a
- 35:24situational
- 35:25thing. So
- 35:27Mark Ackers: happy
- 35:28to talk
- 35:28about any
- 35:28of those,
- 35:29but I
- 35:29think
- 35:29they've
- 35:29all,
- 35:30they're
- 35:30all very
- 35:30different,
- 35:31yeah? So I
- 35:31was just
- 35:32thinking,
- 35:32we
- 35:32recently
- 35:33had Carly
- 35:34pledge on,
- 35:34right? And
- 35:35she spoke
- 35:35about
- 35:36inheriting
- 35:36a team,
- 35:37yeah,
- 35:37okay. And
- 35:38the
- 35:38reality
- 35:38is, when
- 35:39you take a
- 35:39first time
- 35:40manager
- 35:40role. It's
- 35:41normally
- 35:41one of the
- 35:41other you
- 35:42either
- 35:42inherit a
- 35:42team
- 35:43because
- 35:43you've not
- 35:43been
- 35:43promoted
- 35:44internally,
- 35:44yeah,
- 35:45you've
- 35:45gone and
- 35:45taken the
- 35:46first time
- 35:46manager
- 35:46job
- 35:47somewhere
- 35:47else, and
- 35:47the team
- 35:48exists.
- 35:48Obviously,
- 35:49it could
- 35:49be you're
- 35:49the first
- 35:50higher
- 35:50boots in
- 35:50the ground
- 35:51or that.
- 35:51But
- 35:51typically
- 35:51inherited,
- 35:52or you go
- 35:54from being
- 35:55one of the
- 35:55team to
- 35:56managing
- 35:57the team.
- 35:58Let's talk
- 35:58about
- 35:59that,
- 35:59because
- 35:59that is, I
- 36:00would say,
- 36:01probably
- 36:01more
- 36:01common,
- 36:02because
- 36:02top
- 36:02performer
- 36:03gets
- 36:03promoted
- 36:03internally,
- 36:04so don't
- 36:04lose them.
- 36:06I've
- 36:06experienced
- 36:07this going
- 36:08from being
- 36:09one of the
- 36:09group,
- 36:10yeah, to
- 36:11managing
- 36:11the group.
- 36:12And I've
- 36:13had my own
- 36:13difficulties
- 36:14there,
- 36:14where I
- 36:15felt like
- 36:15all of a
- 36:16sudden, I
- 36:17shouldn't
- 36:18stay out
- 36:19for those
- 36:19beings. I
- 36:19should go
- 36:20home and
- 36:21let the
- 36:21team have
- 36:22their fun.
- 36:23I've
- 36:24realized
- 36:24there's
- 36:24Slack
- 36:25channels
- 36:25that I'm
- 36:26no longer
- 36:26invited to
- 36:27and but
- 36:28talk to
- 36:28me. What's
- 36:29that like
- 36:30when you
- 36:31go from
- 36:31being the
- 36:32IC to the
- 36:34manager of
- 36:34that team?
- 36:35And what
- 36:36can
- 36:36managers
- 36:37expect?
- 36:37Before I
- 36:38answer
- 36:38that, I'm
- 36:38intrigued.
- 36:39Why? Why
- 36:39did you
- 36:40feel like
- 36:40you
- 36:40couldn't
- 36:40go out for
- 36:41the beers?
- 36:41I've
- 36:42changed
- 36:42since,
- 36:43okay, it
- 36:44was, it
- 36:44wasn't I
- 36:45felt like
- 36:45I couldn't
- 36:46go out.
- 36:47It's I
- 36:47felt like
- 36:48they
- 36:48couldn't
- 36:49let their
- 36:49hair down
- 36:50if I was
- 36:51there, and
- 36:52I felt
- 36:52like if I
- 36:53went away,
- 36:54that's
- 36:54when they
- 36:54could
- 36:55properly
- 36:55just say
- 36:56what
- 36:56they're
- 36:57thinking,
- 36:58talk
- 36:58amongst
- 36:59themselves.
- 36:59And I
- 37:00don't know
- 37:00that that
- 37:00was a me
- 37:01thing,
- 37:01Unknown: but
- 37:02they
- 37:02didn't see
- 37:02you as the
- 37:03senior
- 37:03credit
- 37:04card
- 37:04holder for
- 37:04the drinks
- 37:06they all
- 37:06had pleas.
- 37:07No, I
- 37:08think, I
- 37:09think it's
- 37:09a really
- 37:09important
- 37:10question,
- 37:10because,
- 37:11yeah, your
- 37:12role has
- 37:12changed
- 37:13within
- 37:13that group
- 37:14dynamic,
- 37:15right?
- 37:15Yeah, I
- 37:16think it's
- 37:17also
- 37:17similar,
- 37:18if people
- 37:19can
- 37:19reference
- 37:20it to you
- 37:22know, you
- 37:22becoming
- 37:23the
- 37:23captain of
- 37:24the team
- 37:24when you
- 37:26when you
- 37:27have that
- 37:27opportunity,
- 37:28and you
- 37:28against
- 37:28the
- 37:28players.
- 37:29So there's
- 37:29you're
- 37:30still,
- 37:30you're
- 37:31still
- 37:31playing in
- 37:31the team,
- 37:32but now
- 37:32you're the
- 37:32captain
- 37:33you might
- 37:33make in
- 37:33some of
- 37:34the
- 37:34decisions.
- 37:35So I think
- 37:36I mean, if
- 37:36you
- 37:37inherit,
- 37:37if you're
- 37:37moving
- 37:38into that
- 37:38role,
- 37:39rather
- 37:40than
- 37:40inheriting
- 37:41your your
- 37:42you know
- 37:43your team.
- 37:44You know
- 37:44the
- 37:44individuals,
- 37:45because
- 37:45you've
- 37:46been
- 37:46working
- 37:46with them
- 37:47quite a
- 37:47while,
- 37:48quite a
- 37:49for, quite
- 37:49a while
- 37:49already.
- 37:50So you'll,
- 37:52you'll
- 37:52have a
- 37:52good
- 37:53understanding
- 37:53them. So
- 37:54if you
- 37:54inherit,
- 37:55and I'd
- 37:55say that
- 37:55you just
- 37:56don't do a
- 37:56lot for a
- 37:57little
- 37:57while, you
- 37:57just watch
- 37:58and think,
- 37:58I think
- 37:59that's
- 37:59what Kylie
- 38:00said about
- 38:01it as
- 38:01well,
- 38:01right? Oh,
- 38:02you're a
- 38:02listener
- 38:02of the
- 38:02podcast. I
- 38:03do, yeah,
- 38:03what's
- 38:04your
- 38:04favorite
- 38:04episode?
- 38:05The worst
- 38:05sales,
- 38:06worst UK
- 38:06sex,
- 38:07what's his
- 38:08worst?
- 38:08He's the
- 38:08most
- 38:08hated.
- 38:09Hated
- 38:09that's
- 38:09that's
- 38:10quite
- 38:10different.
- 38:10Oh, I've
- 38:11got, I'm
- 38:11sorry, the
- 38:12most
- 38:13hated. So
- 38:13it was
- 38:14Benjamin,
- 38:15yeah, he'd
- 38:15have a
- 38:15very
- 38:15different
- 38:16business
- 38:16if he was
- 38:16a label
- 38:17himself.
- 38:17Was the
- 38:18worst.
- 38:18Yeah,
- 38:18don't
- 38:19label
- 38:19yourself
- 38:19as that,
- 38:21Benjamin.
- 38:21That's got
- 38:22me, that's
- 38:22got me in
- 38:23a whole
- 38:23heap of
- 38:23trouble.
- 38:25Mark Ackers: Probably
- 38:26not, but
- 38:26sorry, I
- 38:27I've
- 38:27massively
- 38:28taken you
- 38:28off track
- 38:28there. So
- 38:29you said
- 38:30Carly
- 38:31recently
- 38:31spoke
- 38:31about
- 38:32inheritance.
- 38:32You're
- 38:32right. She
- 38:33did. Yeah,
- 38:33Unknown: so
- 38:34and, and
- 38:35that is a
- 38:36situation
- 38:36where you
- 38:37don't do
- 38:37anything
- 38:37for a
- 38:37while. You
- 38:38really
- 38:38want to
- 38:38understand
- 38:39something,
- 38:40but if
- 38:40you're
- 38:41becoming
- 38:41that
- 38:42leader of
- 38:42that team,
- 38:43you
- 38:43probably
- 38:44know
- 38:44people's
- 38:45situations,
- 38:46and I
- 38:46think that
- 38:47that's
- 38:47when you
- 38:50you know
- 38:51where
- 38:51people are
- 38:52likely to
- 38:53be good,
- 38:55lacking,
- 38:56need,
- 38:57support,
- 38:57whatever,
- 38:58because
- 38:58you've
- 38:58observed
- 38:59it, your
- 38:59your
- 39:00yourself.
- 39:01And I
- 39:01think the
- 39:02the key
- 39:02thing for
- 39:02me, when
- 39:03that's
- 39:03happened
- 39:04to it's
- 39:04only
- 39:04happened
- 39:05to me
- 39:05once,
- 39:05actually,
- 39:06because
- 39:06I've
- 39:06moved, but
- 39:08I've made
- 39:10sure that
- 39:10I had
- 39:11permission
- 39:11to help
- 39:12people in
- 39:12certain
- 39:13ways. So
- 39:15let me,
- 39:15let me
- 39:16unpack or
- 39:16explain
- 39:17that a
- 39:17little
- 39:17bit. So
- 39:18rather
- 39:19than
- 39:20jumping in
- 39:20with your
- 39:21your
- 39:22ideas,
- 39:22because
- 39:23you've
- 39:23seen
- 39:23something
- 39:24that you
- 39:26know could
- 39:26be fixed
- 39:27in a
- 39:27certain
- 39:27way, you
- 39:29really
- 39:29gotta dig
- 39:31into, or
- 39:32lean into
- 39:32your your
- 39:33your
- 39:33coaching
- 39:34mindset
- 39:35about how
- 39:35to do
- 39:36that, so
- 39:37you don't
- 39:38go and try
- 39:38and fix
- 39:39people.
- 39:39And I it's
- 39:40one thing
- 39:40I've
- 39:40always
- 39:41I've
- 39:41struggled
- 39:42with a
- 39:42lot, I
- 39:42still
- 39:43struggle
- 39:43with it
- 39:43now, is
- 39:44that I
- 39:45want to
- 39:45try
- 39:45personally.
- 39:46I want to
- 39:46try and
- 39:46fix and
- 39:47help and
- 39:48do the
- 39:48thing,
- 39:49rather
- 39:50than coach
- 39:51and advise
- 39:52the whole,
- 39:52sort of
- 39:53teach a
- 39:53man a fish
- 39:54and
- 39:55feeding
- 39:55man a
- 39:55fish,
- 39:56right? And
- 39:57I think
- 39:57that's,
- 39:57that's the
- 39:59that's
- 39:59the. Key
- 40:00to be able
- 40:01to do a
- 40:01great job
- 40:02with the
- 40:02people
- 40:02you're
- 40:02already
- 40:03working
- 40:03with.
- 40:03Mark Ackers: Let's
- 40:04talk about
- 40:05when you
- 40:06start
- 40:06leading a
- 40:06team. You
- 40:07mentioned
- 40:07it earlier
- 40:08when I
- 40:08asked it.
- 40:09Yeah, you
- 40:09could do
- 40:10that role
- 40:10being crap
- 40:11at sales.
- 40:12You
- 40:13mentioned
- 40:13the word
- 40:13trust and
- 40:14credibility.
- 40:15Yeah, I
- 40:16would
- 40:16argue,
- 40:17regardless,
- 40:18you've got
- 40:18to build
- 40:18that trust
- 40:19and
- 40:19credibility.
- 40:20How do you
- 40:20do that?
- 40:21Walk
- 40:21Unknown: the
- 40:21Talk. Do
- 40:23what you
- 40:25do, what
- 40:25you say
- 40:25you're
- 40:26going to
- 40:26do. You've
- 40:26got to be
- 40:27real. You
- 40:28can't I
- 40:29think I've
- 40:29seen this
- 40:31work badly
- 40:33for people
- 40:33when
- 40:34they've
- 40:35not been
- 40:37true to
- 40:37the way,
- 40:38true to
- 40:39themselves,
- 40:39the way
- 40:39they want
- 40:40things to
- 40:40run so
- 40:41you've got
- 40:42you've got
- 40:42to act
- 40:43like you
- 40:43want other
- 40:44people to
- 40:44behave,
- 40:45and you've
- 40:46got to act
- 40:46how you
- 40:47want other
- 40:47people to
- 40:48engage.
- 40:51And a big
- 40:52part of
- 40:52that is,
- 40:53is the
- 40:54communication
- 40:55and
- 40:55getting
- 40:55feedback
- 40:56and
- 40:56getting
- 40:56people
- 40:56talking
- 40:57all the
- 40:57time and
- 40:58making
- 40:58sure that
- 41:00we all
- 41:01understand
- 41:02each
- 41:02other. And
- 41:04I would, I
- 41:05would
- 41:05really
- 41:05work on
- 41:07the
- 41:08interactions
- 41:08amongst
- 41:09the
- 41:09amongst
- 41:09the team
- 41:10themselves
- 41:10as well.
- 41:11So it's
- 41:11not just
- 41:12my
- 41:13relationship
- 41:13with them,
- 41:13it's their
- 41:14relationship
- 41:15with me,
- 41:15but it's
- 41:15their
- 41:15relationships
- 41:16with each
- 41:17other as
- 41:17well. So
- 41:17you're
- 41:18trying to
- 41:18pull that
- 41:19together
- 41:19in one go.
- 41:20How do you
- 41:21do that? I
- 41:21think it's
- 41:22just, you
- 41:22know,
- 41:23making it
- 41:23a non
- 41:25threatening,
- 41:27supportive.
- 41:27This
- 41:28sounds a
- 41:28bit I'm
- 41:28going to
- 41:29go on a
- 41:29woke
- 41:29stream
- 41:30here, but
- 41:30in
- 41:31inclusive
- 41:31environment.
- 41:32But
- 41:32they're
- 41:32generally,
- 41:33and that's
- 41:33good way
- 41:34of
- 41:34describing
- 41:34now, is,
- 41:35is,
- 41:35there's,
- 41:36you know,
- 41:37there
- 41:37isn't any
- 41:38wrong
- 41:38answers,
- 41:39there
- 41:39isn't any
- 41:40stupid
- 41:41questions.
- 41:42There
- 41:42isn't
- 41:42anything
- 41:43that
- 41:43people
- 41:43can't do
- 41:44and just
- 41:44make
- 41:44people
- 41:45feel
- 41:45comfortable
- 41:46that they
- 41:47can openly
- 41:48discuss
- 41:48and bring
- 41:49things
- 41:50without
- 41:51any sort
- 41:51of fear of
- 41:53failure.
- 41:54Mark Ackers: I
- 41:54think,
- 41:54like you
- 41:54say,
- 41:55walking
- 41:56the walk
- 41:56is kind of
- 41:57you, if
- 41:57you
- 41:57demonstrate
- 41:58that
- 41:58yourself,
- 41:59you can
- 42:00enable
- 42:00that. And
- 42:02what about
- 42:03a sales
- 42:03manager
- 42:04that's
- 42:05lost that
- 42:05trust with
- 42:06the team
- 42:06and
- 42:06credibility?
- 42:07Can we get
- 42:07it back?
- 42:08Very
- 42:09Unknown: difficult.
- 42:09I think
- 42:10actually,
- 42:11if I'm if
- 42:11I'm going
- 42:12to be
- 42:12bluntly
- 42:12honest
- 42:13with you,
- 42:14depends on
- 42:15the
- 42:16specific
- 42:17situation
- 42:18and what
- 42:18trust was
- 42:19was lost.
- 42:22But yes,
- 42:23as we
- 42:24probably
- 42:24all know,
- 42:25trust
- 42:26takes a
- 42:26long time
- 42:27to build,
- 42:27and can be
- 42:28broken in
- 42:28a second.
- 42:29So yeah,
- 42:30that's,
- 42:31that's a
- 42:31that's a
- 42:32tough one.
- 42:32I mean, if
- 42:34we're in
- 42:34that
- 42:34position,
- 42:35I think,
- 42:36again,
- 42:37depending
- 42:37on what it
- 42:38is, you've
- 42:39got to
- 42:39have an
- 42:41ability to
- 42:43own it and
- 42:44be honest
- 42:45and front
- 42:45it up and
- 42:47and show
- 42:48your own
- 42:48humility
- 42:49and the
- 42:49mistake or
- 42:50whatever
- 42:51that you
- 42:51made, then
- 42:53you have a
- 42:53chance.
- 42:54Yeah. Have
- 42:55you ever
- 42:55seen that
- 42:55happen
- 42:56before,
- 42:56where a
- 42:56sales
- 42:56manager
- 42:57has just
- 42:58lost a
- 42:58team?
- 42:59Yeah,
- 42:59unfortunately,
- 43:00yeah.
- 43:01Could it
- 43:01have been
- 43:01resolved,
- 43:02or did it
- 43:02not work
- 43:03out? Could
- 43:03it have
- 43:04been
- 43:04resolved?
- 43:04That's a
- 43:05really
- 43:05good
- 43:05question
- 43:06I'm
- 43:06thinking
- 43:06about, I
- 43:06obviously
- 43:07have to
- 43:07keep Yeah,
- 43:09no, I
- 43:09don't
- 43:09think it
- 43:10could. It
- 43:10could have
- 43:10been it
- 43:11was a
- 43:11particular
- 43:12situation
- 43:12where
- 43:13mistakes
- 43:14were made,
- 43:14which were
- 43:16kind of
- 43:17against a
- 43:18lot of
- 43:19ethical
- 43:20stuff in
- 43:21in a in
- 43:22the
- 43:23business,
- 43:23in the
- 43:23company,
- 43:24and you
- 43:25break
- 43:26that,
- 43:26that's
- 43:26kind of
- 43:27that's a
- 43:27tough one
- 43:28to that's
- 43:29tough one
- 43:29to break.
- 43:30Let's talk
- 43:30about
- 43:31leaving
- 43:31diverse
- 43:32teams
- 43:32then. So
- 43:34you've
- 43:34built
- 43:34teams that
- 43:35include
- 43:35account
- 43:35managers,
- 43:36new
- 43:37business
- 43:37sales, pre
- 43:38sales,
- 43:38consulting.
- 43:40Mark Ackers: How
- 43:41do you
- 43:41unify a
- 43:42diverse
- 43:43team with
- 43:44different
- 43:45roles and
- 43:45objectives
- 43:46under one
- 43:46vision?
- 43:47It's one
- 43:48Unknown: of
- 43:48my, one of
- 43:48my
- 43:48favorite
- 43:49topics. So
- 43:50thank you
- 43:50for
- 43:50bringing
- 43:50that up.
- 43:52We had at
- 43:54fair sale,
- 43:55which you
- 43:55mentioned,
- 43:56was the
- 43:56company
- 43:57that we we
- 43:58sold on to
- 43:59Sage when
- 44:02we were
- 44:02growing
- 44:02that as a
- 44:05as a scale
- 44:05up
- 44:06business,
- 44:07we had
- 44:07this
- 44:09methodology,
- 44:10if you
- 44:10like. It
- 44:11wasn't
- 44:11mine, but
- 44:12the exact
- 44:13kind of we
- 44:13kind of
- 44:14came up
- 44:14with this
- 44:14idea of,
- 44:15of working
- 44:16in in in
- 44:17pods, and
- 44:19I think
- 44:20it's a
- 44:20concept
- 44:20that now
- 44:21is
- 44:21actually
- 44:22out there.
- 44:22I don't
- 44:23know, I
- 44:23don't know
- 44:23sure
- 44:23whether we
- 44:24come up
- 44:24with it or
- 44:24whatever,
- 44:25but it was
- 44:27putting
- 44:27together,
- 44:28you know,
- 44:28the AES,
- 44:29the
- 44:29solution
- 44:30consultants,
- 44:30the the
- 44:33SDRs,
- 44:35maybe even
- 44:36the, you
- 44:37know, the
- 44:37customer
- 44:37success
- 44:38team,
- 44:38which will
- 44:38come in
- 44:39afterwards
- 44:39or
- 44:40whatever,
- 44:40and get
- 44:40them
- 44:41working
- 44:42together
- 44:42as a unit
- 44:43throughout
- 44:44the sales
- 44:44cycle. So
- 44:46they were
- 44:47threaded
- 44:47all the
- 44:47way all
- 44:48the way
- 44:48through,
- 44:49and the
- 44:50pods would
- 44:51would work
- 44:52in
- 44:52particular
- 44:54areas. So
- 44:56maybe
- 44:56there's
- 44:57maybe they
- 44:57work in
- 44:58the
- 44:59finance.
- 45:00Vertical,
- 45:00or a
- 45:00certain
- 45:01regional,
- 45:01vertical,
- 45:02or
- 45:02whatever
- 45:03it would
- 45:03be. And it
- 45:05was
- 45:05really,
- 45:06really
- 45:06strong,
- 45:06because
- 45:08they kind
- 45:09of bounced
- 45:09off each
- 45:09other and
- 45:12built a
- 45:12lot of
- 45:12camaraderie
- 45:13amongst
- 45:15the team
- 45:15itself,
- 45:16and they
- 45:16acted like
- 45:17a little
- 45:18pod team,
- 45:19rather
- 45:19than sales
- 45:22being
- 45:22here, pre
- 45:23sales
- 45:23being
- 45:23there,
- 45:23SDRs being
- 45:24here,
- 45:25marketing
- 45:25being
- 45:25there. So
- 45:26it was
- 45:27kind of
- 45:28Mark Ackers: they
- 45:28were
- 45:29working
- 45:29together
- 45:29as a
- 45:30collective.
- 45:30And I
- 45:31think
- 45:31that's a
- 45:31really
- 45:32strong way
- 45:33of
- 45:33actually
- 45:33going
- 45:34going to
- 45:34market out
- 45:35there.
- 45:36I've
- 45:36experienced
- 45:37that
- 45:37myself,
- 45:37actually,
- 45:38although I
- 45:38was
- 45:38working
- 45:38for an
- 45:39American
- 45:39company at
- 45:40the time,
- 45:40and they
- 45:41were
- 45:41called
- 45:41airplanes,
- 45:42and
- 45:42airplanes,
- 45:43yeah, so
- 45:44we had the
- 45:44SDR, was
- 45:45the
- 45:45gunner,
- 45:45Oh, I see
- 45:46okay. I
- 45:47was the
- 45:48senior AE,
- 45:49so I was
- 45:49the pilot.
- 45:50I had a
- 45:51junior AE,
- 45:51that was
- 45:52the co
- 45:52pilot. And
- 45:53then we
- 45:53had CS.
- 45:54That was
- 45:54kind of
- 45:55more this,
- 45:55because
- 45:55that makes
- 45:56CS sound
- 45:56terrible,
- 45:57but like
- 45:57Stuart in
- 45:58terms of
- 45:58making
- 45:59sure
- 45:59everyone's
- 45:59comfortable
- 46:00and happy,
- 46:00etc, yeah,
- 46:02chicken or
- 46:03beef
- 46:04appreciate
- 46:04they won't
- 46:05like that.
- 46:05But on the
- 46:06whole,
- 46:06that
- 46:06worked
- 46:06really
- 46:06well
- 46:07because we
- 46:07then went
- 46:07after
- 46:08different
- 46:08verticals,
- 46:09different
- 46:09market
- 46:09sizes,
- 46:10yeah. The
- 46:10worst part
- 46:11about all
- 46:11of it was
- 46:12all the
- 46:13names that
- 46:13were given
- 46:13to the
- 46:14airplanes.
- 46:14It was,
- 46:15Unknown: it
- 46:15was very,
- 46:15I can
- 46:15imagine,
- 46:16yeah, they
- 46:17went right
- 46:17with this
- 46:18that,
- 46:18yeah,
- 46:19Mark Ackers: we'll,
- 46:19we'll move
- 46:20on. But in
- 46:21terms of
- 46:21so that's
- 46:22diverse,
- 46:22in terms
- 46:23of
- 46:23different
- 46:23skills and
- 46:24roles,
- 46:25yeah,
- 46:25let's talk
- 46:26about
- 46:26having
- 46:27diverse
- 46:27people in
- 46:27the team
- 46:28then. So
- 46:29one of the
- 46:30one of the
- 46:30things
- 46:30that I see
- 46:31managers
- 46:31do is
- 46:32hiring
- 46:32their own
- 46:33image.
- 46:33It's easy,
- 46:35yeah, as I
- 46:35said
- 46:35earlier,
- 46:35interviewing
- 46:36someone,
- 46:36and you
- 46:37think we
- 46:38get on
- 46:38with very
- 46:38similar,
- 46:39similar
- 46:39tastes. I
- 46:40know this
- 46:40person
- 46:41works, a
- 46:42lot of
- 46:42people
- 46:43would
- 46:43think
- 46:43that's
- 46:44obviously
- 46:44the easy
- 46:45thing to
- 46:45do. Hire
- 46:46people
- 46:46that you
- 46:46know how
- 46:47they work
- 46:48and ticks
- 46:48are just
- 46:49like you,
- 46:49yeah, but
- 46:50you're
- 46:50saying
- 46:50you've
- 46:51done that,
- 46:51and that
- 46:51was a
- 46:52mistake.
- 46:52Tell us
- 46:52more about
- 46:53that.
- 46:53Unknown: I
- 46:53can't
- 46:54really it
- 46:54was a NLP
- 46:55thing,
- 46:55wasn't it?
- 46:56That whole
- 46:57mirroring
- 46:57thing? You
- 46:58know, that
- 46:58was a big
- 46:59thing. And
- 47:01for
- 47:01rapport
- 47:01building.
- 47:02And I
- 47:03remember
- 47:04even once,
- 47:06somebody
- 47:07pointed
- 47:07out to me
- 47:08that there
- 47:10was me and
- 47:10a couple
- 47:10of the
- 47:11guys in
- 47:12that had
- 47:13control
- 47:13work, that
- 47:13had
- 47:15responsibility
- 47:15for a
- 47:16couple of
- 47:16teams, and
- 47:17we're all
- 47:17in brass
- 47:19shoes,
- 47:20brown
- 47:20chinos,
- 47:21little
- 47:21gilay
- 47:21jacket,
- 47:22just like,
- 47:24Oh, my,
- 47:24what have
- 47:24I done?
- 47:26So, but so
- 47:27why is it
- 47:28wrong?
- 47:31Because
- 47:32you're not
- 47:33going to
- 47:33see things
- 47:34through a
- 47:34different
- 47:35lens or a
- 47:35different
- 47:36perspective.
- 47:37You're not
- 47:37going to
- 47:38see you're
- 47:38not going
- 47:39to see
- 47:39things in
- 47:40a
- 47:40completely
- 47:40different
- 47:41way. And
- 47:41it never
- 47:42ceases to
- 47:43surprise
- 47:44or amaze
- 47:44me, the
- 47:46things I
- 47:46miss
- 47:46because of
- 47:47my own
- 47:49sort of
- 47:50myopic
- 47:50vision on
- 47:51something
- 47:52you know,
- 47:52or you
- 47:54know. I
- 47:55mean, the
- 47:55whole sort
- 47:57of
- 47:57discussion
- 47:58nowadays
- 47:58is all
- 47:59around
- 47:59your your
- 48:00biases,
- 48:01and I've
- 48:03I've
- 48:03looked and
- 48:04and I've
- 48:04been aware
- 48:05of this
- 48:05myself,
- 48:05and I try
- 48:06to sort of
- 48:07take note
- 48:08of it. I
- 48:08think you,
- 48:09you, we
- 48:10all have
- 48:11unconscious
- 48:12bias,
- 48:13which we
- 48:14can't
- 48:15help, and
- 48:15you just
- 48:16have to
- 48:16recognize
- 48:17that you
- 48:17can't help
- 48:18your
- 48:18unconscious
- 48:18bias. But
- 48:19if you're
- 48:19aware of
- 48:21your
- 48:21unconscious
- 48:22bias, then
- 48:22you can do
- 48:23something
- 48:23about it.
- 48:24And yeah,
- 48:25the way
- 48:25somebody
- 48:26looks, the
- 48:26way
- 48:26somebody
- 48:27talks, the
- 48:27way
- 48:27somebody
- 48:28acts,
- 48:29their
- 48:30their and,
- 48:31yeah, I'll
- 48:31mention it
- 48:32out here,
- 48:32their
- 48:32their age,
- 48:33their
- 48:33gender. It
- 48:34all comes
- 48:35into it,
- 48:36but if
- 48:36you're
- 48:36aware of
- 48:37it, then
- 48:37you can
- 48:38actually
- 48:38do
- 48:38something
- 48:39about it.
- 48:40And you
- 48:41know, be
- 48:42positive
- 48:42and
- 48:43reactive
- 48:43in the
- 48:43right way.
- 48:44Most
- 48:44Mark Ackers: organizations
- 48:45equip
- 48:45their
- 48:46sellers
- 48:46with all
- 48:47the
- 48:47technology
- 48:47they need
- 48:48to be
- 48:48successful.
- 48:49Technology
- 48:50that
- 48:50trebles
- 48:50the amount
- 48:51of emails
- 48:51they can
- 48:51send,
- 48:52quadruples
- 48:53the amount
- 48:53of dials
- 48:54they can
- 48:54make,
- 48:55technology
- 48:56that
- 48:56enables
- 48:56you to see
- 48:57accounts
- 48:57that you
- 48:57should
- 48:58prospect
- 48:58into phone
- 48:59numbers at
- 49:00your
- 49:00fingertips
- 49:01technology
- 49:02to make a
- 49:02sales rep
- 49:03more
- 49:03efficient
- 49:04with their
- 49:04time.
- 49:05Here's the
- 49:05missing
- 49:06piece,
- 49:06actually
- 49:07making
- 49:07your
- 49:07sellers
- 49:08better at
- 49:09selling
- 49:09better at
- 49:10their
- 49:10profession.
- 49:11That's the
- 49:11missing
- 49:11piece. All
- 49:12this
- 49:12technology
- 49:13is really
- 49:14helpful in
- 49:14speeding a
- 49:15rep up,
- 49:16but none
- 49:16of it
- 49:17actually
- 49:17helps the
- 49:17seller get
- 49:18better at
- 49:19their
- 49:19profession.
- 49:19That's
- 49:20what my
- 49:20sales
- 49:20coach
- 49:21does. We
- 49:21work with
- 49:22the
- 49:22individuals
- 49:23in your
- 49:23team and
- 49:24you as
- 49:24their
- 49:24leader to
- 49:25help them
- 49:26become the
- 49:26best
- 49:27versions
- 49:27of
- 49:27themselves.
- 49:28We have
- 49:28coaches
- 49:28that work
- 49:29with
- 49:29sellers
- 49:30tactically,
- 49:30from
- 49:31outbounding,
- 49:32Discovery
- 49:33calls,
- 49:33demos,
- 49:34negotiation,
- 49:34closing,
- 49:35you name
- 49:35it, and
- 49:36mentally
- 49:37impostor
- 49:37syndrome,
- 49:38anxiety,
- 49:39stress and
- 49:39weight of
- 49:40targets,
- 49:40our
- 49:41coaches
- 49:41have been
- 49:42there and
- 49:42done it
- 49:43and had
- 49:43success in
- 49:44those
- 49:45roles. Is
- 49:45there a
- 49:46way in
- 49:46which you
- 49:46try to
- 49:47build and
- 49:47recruit
- 49:48teams then
- 49:49to make
- 49:49sure
- 49:49you've got
- 49:50that
- 49:50different
- 49:50perspective
- 49:51and
- 49:51opinions?
- 49:52Unknown: I
- 49:52Yeah,
- 49:53this. So
- 49:53this is a
- 49:53controversial
- 49:55course,
- 49:56yeah, the
- 49:56whole sort
- 49:56of, do you
- 49:59do? Higher
- 50:00in a bias
- 50:01way for
- 50:03maybe
- 50:04gender,
- 50:05ethnicity
- 50:06or
- 50:06whatever.
- 50:07And I
- 50:08don't
- 50:08think you
- 50:08should, I
- 50:09don't
- 50:09think you
- 50:09should, to
- 50:10be honest,
- 50:11is this is
- 50:12a just a
- 50:12my
- 50:13personal
- 50:13opinion,
- 50:14but I
- 50:15think you,
- 50:15if you're
- 50:15aware of
- 50:16it, then
- 50:17you won't
- 50:18make the
- 50:18unconscious
- 50:19bias
- 50:19decisions.
- 50:21But you
- 50:21should
- 50:21always,
- 50:22you should
- 50:22always
- 50:22hire on
- 50:23the basis
- 50:23of making
- 50:26sure
- 50:26somebody
- 50:26can
- 50:27actually
- 50:27do the
- 50:28job. And I
- 50:29think that
- 50:30that's
- 50:30because if
- 50:31you, if
- 50:31you don't
- 50:31do that,
- 50:32then
- 50:32that's
- 50:32unfair on
- 50:32the people
- 50:33that
- 50:33you've
- 50:33been
- 50:34consciously
- 50:35biased
- 50:36with for
- 50:36the
- 50:37positive
- 50:37reason,
- 50:37and it
- 50:38kind of
- 50:38undermines
- 50:38the whole
- 50:39point of
- 50:40view
- 50:40anyway, so
- 50:41I think
- 50:42it's an
- 50:42awareness,
- 50:43but you
- 50:44you have
- 50:45to have a
- 50:45way of
- 50:47understanding
- 50:49what you
- 50:50actually
- 50:50want out
- 50:51of the
- 50:53individual
- 50:53you're
- 50:53hiring two
- 50:56things
- 50:56that I
- 50:59Constance
- 50:59whether
- 51:00You're
- 51:00hiring an
- 51:00IC or a
- 51:01manager or
- 51:01whatever,
- 51:03are
- 51:05curiosity
- 51:06and a
- 51:07willingness
- 51:07to to
- 51:09learn and
- 51:11but, but
- 51:12again,
- 51:12those two
- 51:13things are
- 51:15to use
- 51:16your word
- 51:16from
- 51:16earlier,
- 51:17the traits
- 51:17that I
- 51:18want in
- 51:18people.
- 51:19But people
- 51:20are, are,
- 51:21you know,
- 51:21learning
- 51:22different
- 51:22ways. Want
- 51:23to learn
- 51:23in
- 51:23different
- 51:24ways, and
- 51:24they can
- 51:24be curious
- 51:25in
- 51:25different
- 51:26ways, but
- 51:27as long as
- 51:27somebody
- 51:28is a
- 51:28curious
- 51:28person,
- 51:30and once
- 51:31they wants
- 51:32to
- 51:33Mark Ackers: move
- 51:34with
- 51:34continuous
- 51:35learning,
- 51:35then I
- 51:36don't
- 51:36mind,
- 51:36actually,
- 51:37how they
- 51:37do that.
- 51:38That's,
- 51:39that's the
- 51:39method.
- 51:40The trait
- 51:40is the
- 51:41important
- 51:41part. So
- 51:42as a first
- 51:43time
- 51:43leader,
- 51:44it's no
- 51:44different
- 51:44to be in
- 51:45the nice
- 51:45in the
- 51:45sense of
- 51:46there are
- 51:46lots of
- 51:47ups and
- 51:47downs.
- 51:47Right? The
- 51:49lows are
- 51:50low, the
- 51:51highs are
- 51:51high.
- 51:52Let's talk
- 51:52about
- 51:53dealing
- 51:53with
- 51:53failure.
- 51:54How should
- 51:55first time
- 51:56leaders
- 51:56handle
- 51:57failure,
- 51:58not their
- 51:59own
- 51:59anymore,
- 51:59though
- 52:00their
- 52:00teams. How
- 52:01should
- 52:01they deal
- 52:02with that
- 52:02in a way
- 52:03that helps
- 52:04their
- 52:04team?
- 52:05Unknown: I
- 52:05think
- 52:05that's one
- 52:06of the
- 52:09strong
- 52:11attributes
- 52:11that a
- 52:12leader can
- 52:12actually a
- 52:13sales
- 52:13leader can
- 52:13actually
- 52:14bring to
- 52:15this
- 52:15actually,
- 52:16is being
- 52:17able to
- 52:21help
- 52:22everybody
- 52:22learn from
- 52:23those kind
- 52:23of if
- 52:25something's
- 52:26gone wrong
- 52:26or some
- 52:26mistake
- 52:27has been
- 52:27made,
- 52:28because,
- 52:28again,
- 52:28you're,
- 52:29you know,
- 52:30if you're
- 52:30leading by
- 52:30example in
- 52:31that,
- 52:31you're not
- 52:32going to
- 52:32jump on
- 52:33somebody
- 52:33for for
- 52:34the
- 52:34mistake.
- 52:35You're
- 52:35going to
- 52:35use the
- 52:36opportunity
- 52:36to make
- 52:37sure that
- 52:37that
- 52:38lesson, if
- 52:39you like,
- 52:40is
- 52:40learned,
- 52:41but you
- 52:42can, you
- 52:43can
- 52:43discuss it
- 52:43and
- 52:43deliver it
- 52:44and debate
- 52:45it as a
- 52:46group
- 52:47without,
- 52:48again,
- 52:49without
- 52:49that
- 52:49individual
- 52:50being or
- 52:51feeling
- 52:52that
- 52:52they're
- 52:52being
- 52:55attacked
- 52:55about it
- 52:55or put
- 52:56down about
- 52:57it. So I
- 52:57think,
- 52:58yeah,
- 52:59that's a
- 52:59that's a
- 53:00great way
- 53:01of showing
- 53:02strong
- 53:02leadership
- 53:02in being
- 53:03able to
- 53:03take
- 53:03something
- 53:04like that
- 53:04and
- 53:04turning it
- 53:05into a
- 53:05positive
- 53:06Can you
- 53:06give me
- 53:07Mark Ackers: one
- 53:08of, if not
- 53:08the
- 53:08biggest
- 53:09failures
- 53:09you've had
- 53:09as a sales
- 53:10leader?
- 53:11Unknown: Again,
- 53:11names and
- 53:12things
- 53:13will have
- 53:13to remain
- 53:14out of
- 53:14this. But
- 53:17I think
- 53:17one of the
- 53:19one
- 53:19particular
- 53:19occasion I
- 53:20didn't I
- 53:21didn't
- 53:21check in
- 53:22enough
- 53:23around the
- 53:24direction
- 53:25of travel,
- 53:26the the
- 53:27team I the
- 53:29business,
- 53:29was going
- 53:30in. I made
- 53:31too many
- 53:32assumptions
- 53:32about the
- 53:34success we
- 53:35were
- 53:35having and
- 53:36how that
- 53:36success
- 53:37was being
- 53:38understood
- 53:39and
- 53:40received.
- 53:41And I
- 53:42didn't
- 53:42make
- 53:43enough
- 53:44checks
- 53:46with my
- 53:47own
- 53:47leadership.
- 53:48About Is
- 53:50that true?
- 53:51And going
- 53:51back to
- 53:52that
- 53:52conversation
- 53:53we had
- 53:53earlier
- 53:53about the
- 53:54individual
- 53:55contributor,
- 53:56in that
- 53:56way, it's
- 53:56that sort
- 53:58of need to
- 53:59sort of
- 54:00always be
- 54:00qualifying
- 54:02the deal
- 54:03you should
- 54:03always be,
- 54:04or you
- 54:04should
- 54:04constantly
- 54:05qualify
- 54:06what you
- 54:07think,
- 54:08what
- 54:08you're
- 54:09doing is
- 54:09what they
- 54:10think is
- 54:11the right
- 54:11thing as
- 54:11well. So,
- 54:13yeah, I
- 54:13made it, I
- 54:14made a
- 54:14mistake,
- 54:15and was
- 54:15too
- 54:15assumptive,
- 54:16and it was
- 54:18too late,
- 54:18probably
- 54:18to turn it
- 54:19around
- 54:19when I
- 54:20when I
- 54:20realized
- 54:20it, so
- 54:21what did?
- 54:21How was
- 54:22the
- 54:22fallout?
- 54:22We
- 54:23actually
- 54:23parted
- 54:23ways,
- 54:24right? It
- 54:25wasn't
- 54:26acrimonious
- 54:27in any
- 54:27way. It
- 54:27was. It
- 54:27was kind
- 54:28of more
- 54:28like, this
- 54:29is not,
- 54:31this is
- 54:31not
- 54:31working
- 54:32out as as
- 54:34we both
- 54:35expected,
- 54:36and that's
- 54:38actually,
- 54:38that's
- 54:38actually
- 54:39fine, but
- 54:40it it
- 54:40didn't
- 54:40need to
- 54:41get to
- 54:41that point
- 54:41if I had
- 54:42been and I
- 54:43take full
- 54:43responsibility
- 54:44for it,
- 54:44but if I'd
- 54:44have been
- 54:46more
- 54:46attentive,
- 54:47I think,
- 54:48to
- 54:48understanding
- 54:50the the
- 54:52receiving,
- 54:53of what
- 54:54was going
- 54:54on and
- 54:54what what
- 54:55I was
- 54:55doing and
- 54:55what the
- 54:56team were
- 54:56delivering,
- 54:56it
- 54:57probably
- 54:57wouldn't
- 54:58have got
- 54:58to that
- 54:58point.
- 54:59We'd have,
- 54:59we'd have
- 54:59worked. It
- 55:00out. So,
- 55:02you
- 55:02Mark Ackers: know,
- 55:03my bad for
- 55:04not
- 55:04actually
- 55:04making
- 55:05sure that
- 55:06we were
- 55:07being open
- 55:08and honest
- 55:08and
- 55:08discussing
- 55:09that, I
- 55:09think
- 55:10let's talk
- 55:10about so
- 55:11you've
- 55:11actually
- 55:11learned
- 55:12lessons
- 55:12there,
- 55:12right?
- 55:13Learn a
- 55:13lot of
- 55:13lessons. I
- 55:15think
- 55:15that's the
- 55:15thing.
- 55:16When
- 55:16you're, I
- 55:17mean, any
- 55:17first time
- 55:18role, but
- 55:19when
- 55:19you're a
- 55:19sales
- 55:20leader,
- 55:21and his
- 55:21first time
- 55:22in that
- 55:22role, in
- 55:22particular,
- 55:23you're
- 55:24going to
- 55:24learn a
- 55:25lot. How
- 55:25important
- 55:26is it when
- 55:26you're in
- 55:27a
- 55:27leadership
- 55:28role to
- 55:29have a
- 55:29coach,
- 55:30someone
- 55:30that has
- 55:31walked in
- 55:32those
- 55:32shoes
- 55:32before,
- 55:33had the
- 55:34success
- 55:34that you
- 55:35want to
- 55:35have. How
- 55:36important
- 55:37is it to
- 55:37have a
- 55:37coach that
- 55:37you can
- 55:38work with
- 55:39as a sales
- 55:39leader?
- 55:40Unknown: Vital
- 55:43Yeah,
- 55:44well, I
- 55:44would say
- 55:44that,
- 55:44wouldn't
- 55:45I, because
- 55:45we're on
- 55:45the My
- 55:46sales
- 55:46coach
- 55:47podcast.
- 55:48Thank you
- 55:48for
- 55:48coming.
- 55:49But no, I
- 55:51think
- 55:51coaching
- 55:52is is so
- 55:53important.
- 55:56And to use
- 55:57exactly
- 55:58your
- 55:58words,
- 55:58though,
- 55:58something
- 55:58that's
- 55:59been in
- 55:59your
- 55:59shoes,
- 56:00that's
- 56:00done it,
- 56:01and that's
- 56:01also
- 56:02actually
- 56:02kind of
- 56:03what I
- 56:03really
- 56:03enjoy from
- 56:04working
- 56:05with you
- 56:05guys as
- 56:06well,
- 56:06because
- 56:07you can
- 56:07see, I've
- 56:08seen
- 56:09people
- 56:10trip up
- 56:10and fail
- 56:13BEC,
- 56:14because
- 56:14they
- 56:14haven't
- 56:14got that
- 56:15access to
- 56:16somebody
- 56:17who's seen
- 56:18it and
- 56:19been
- 56:19there. And
- 56:21even if we
- 56:21can help a
- 56:22few people
- 56:23avoid some
- 56:23of those
- 56:24potholes,
- 56:24that's
- 56:25That's
- 56:25fantastic,
- 56:27and a
- 56:28coach is
- 56:30not there
- 56:30to make
- 56:32those
- 56:32decisions
- 56:33and tell
- 56:33you, it's
- 56:34not a
- 56:34you're not
- 56:35training
- 56:36I'm not
- 56:36training
- 56:36people to
- 56:37be a
- 56:37manager,
- 56:38but I'm
- 56:39I'm a
- 56:40sounding
- 56:40board. I
- 56:42try to
- 56:42help
- 56:42people,
- 56:43and people
- 56:43have been
- 56:44fantastic
- 56:44coaches to
- 56:45me over
- 56:45the years,
- 56:46where I've
- 56:47kind of
- 56:48listened
- 56:49to their
- 56:49experiences.
- 56:51And you
- 56:52take
- 56:52sounding
- 56:53boards
- 56:53from
- 56:53different
- 56:54people,
- 56:54it's not
- 56:54just one
- 56:55person.
- 56:55That's the
- 56:56other
- 56:56thing I
- 56:56would say
- 56:56on this,
- 56:58and you,
- 56:59you make
- 57:00your own
- 57:00mark, but
- 57:01you've
- 57:01taken that
- 57:02coaching
- 57:02advice
- 57:03from
- 57:03somebody
- 57:04that has
- 57:05lived it,
- 57:05that's
- 57:06that's
- 57:06been
- 57:06there, and
- 57:08I think
- 57:08that's
- 57:08absolutely
- 57:09vital.
- 57:10Mark Ackers: Let's
- 57:10imagine
- 57:11someone's
- 57:11listen to
- 57:12this
- 57:12podcast.
- 57:12They're
- 57:13either
- 57:13wanting to
- 57:14be or they
- 57:14are a
- 57:15sales lead
- 57:16first
- 57:16time, and
- 57:17they don't
- 57:17have a
- 57:18coach. And
- 57:19let's say
- 57:20it's
- 57:20because
- 57:21they they
- 57:21don't feel
- 57:22like they
- 57:23should, or
- 57:24they're
- 57:24not ready
- 57:25to, or
- 57:25that
- 57:26they're a
- 57:26little bit
- 57:26skeptical.
- 57:27But what
- 57:27would you
- 57:28what would
- 57:28your
- 57:28message
- 57:29be? I
- 57:29Unknown: think
- 57:29my message
- 57:30would be,
- 57:31you know,
- 57:32how? How
- 57:33do you
- 57:33expect to
- 57:35learn
- 57:36something,
- 57:38understand
- 57:38something,
- 57:39get to a
- 57:40point of
- 57:42success
- 57:43without
- 57:43actually
- 57:44having any
- 57:44advice and
- 57:45coaching
- 57:45on a on
- 57:46what
- 57:46you're
- 57:46doing. I
- 57:47mean, you
- 57:49wouldn't
- 57:49jump into
- 57:50a car
- 57:50after
- 57:50reading a
- 57:51book on
- 57:51how to
- 57:52drive
- 57:52cars. You
- 57:53you'd have
- 57:54a drive
- 57:54instructor.
- 57:56You
- 57:56wouldn't
- 57:58you
- 57:59wouldn't
- 57:59run out on
- 58:00the rugby
- 58:00field and
- 58:01start
- 58:01playing in
- 58:01a
- 58:01different
- 58:02position
- 58:04without
- 58:05actually
- 58:05having
- 58:06some
- 58:06coaching
- 58:06advice on
- 58:07how how to
- 58:08do that.
- 58:09So I
- 58:10think,
- 58:11yeah,
- 58:11it's, it's
- 58:13kind of if
- 58:14you're
- 58:15not, if
- 58:15you
- 58:15wouldn't
- 58:16do that,
- 58:16then
- 58:16you're not
- 58:17sure
- 58:18you've
- 58:18really
- 58:18understood
- 58:19the the
- 58:21requirements
- 58:22of moving
- 58:22into a
- 58:22different
- 58:23role. And
- 58:23I think
- 58:24that if
- 58:25you're, if
- 58:26you do
- 58:26that on
- 58:27your own,
- 58:27you've
- 58:28just put
- 58:28yourself
- 58:29into a
- 58:30much
- 58:30higher
- 58:31risk
- 58:31category.
- 58:32More sense
- 58:33well,
- 58:33because
- 58:33you,
- 58:33you've, if
- 58:35you, if
- 58:35you can
- 58:35work with
- 58:36somebody
- 58:36who's been
- 58:37there and
- 58:37done it,
- 58:38then
- 58:38you've got
- 58:39a you've
- 58:39got a
- 58:39reference
- 58:40point
- 58:40that's
- 58:40actually
- 58:41going to
- 58:41help you,
- 58:42if you're
- 58:43just going
- 58:43to do it
- 58:43off the
- 58:44off your
- 58:44own back,
- 58:45I just
- 58:46think
- 58:46that's
- 58:46more
- 58:47risky. You
- 58:48might be
- 58:49successful.
- 58:50You might
- 58:51be
- 58:51extremely
- 58:52observant.
- 58:53You might
- 58:54be able to
- 58:54consume
- 58:55all the
- 58:56how to be
- 58:57a manager
- 58:57books in a
- 58:58very
- 59:00valuable
- 59:01way. But I
- 59:02don't
- 59:03actually
- 59:03believe
- 59:03that. I
- 59:04think that
- 59:04you
- 59:04actually
- 59:05need
- 59:05somebody
- 59:06to have a
- 59:07two way
- 59:07conversation,
- 59:08understand
- 59:08the
- 59:08details
- 59:09and get
- 59:10under the
- 59:10covers of
- 59:11it, rather
- 59:11than just,
- 59:12you know,
- 59:13reading
- 59:13and
- 59:13observing
- 59:14love that
- 59:15Mark Ackers: Alan
- 59:15and I
- 59:16think,
- 59:16really
- 59:16well
- 59:17articulated.
- 59:19As we're
- 59:19getting
- 59:19close to
- 59:20the end, I
- 59:20want to
- 59:20talk about
- 59:21leadership
- 59:21Styles.
- 59:22Styles,
- 59:23right?
- 59:23Okay,
- 59:24there's
- 59:24different
- 59:24styles of
- 59:25of
- 59:26leadership.
- 59:27What
- 59:27advice
- 59:28would you
- 59:28give to a
- 59:30new sales
- 59:30leader
- 59:31trying to
- 59:32develop
- 59:32their own
- 59:32leadership
- 59:33style and
- 59:34find their
- 59:34own sort
- 59:35of voice?
- 59:35How should
- 59:36they go
- 59:36about
- 59:36doing
- 59:36that? I
- 59:37don't
- 59:37Unknown: want
- 59:38to trip up
- 59:38on that
- 59:39word that
- 59:40Springs
- 59:40immediately
- 59:41to mind,
- 59:41to go be
- 59:42authentic,
- 59:43because
- 59:43you got to
- 59:44be you,
- 59:45right? But
- 59:48also, like
- 59:48the the
- 59:51recent
- 59:51podcast
- 59:52with
- 59:53Benjamin
- 59:53as well,
- 59:53where he
- 59:55was kind
- 59:55of saying,
- 59:56you know,
- 59:57you know,
- 59:57pretend,
- 59:58fake it
- 59:58till you
- 59:58make it
- 59:59kind of
- 59:59thing as
- 59:59well.
- 1:00:00Well, I
- 1:00:00think
- 1:00:00you've got
- 1:00:01to unpack
- 1:00:03what
- 1:00:03you're
- 1:00:03trying to
- 1:00:04achieve.
- 1:00:04So you've
- 1:00:05got to,
- 1:00:05you've got
- 1:00:05to kind of
- 1:00:06look at
- 1:00:06the job in
- 1:00:09in a
- 1:00:10delivery
- 1:00:10sense,
- 1:00:11what are
- 1:00:11you going
- 1:00:11to
- 1:00:12deliver?
- 1:00:12How are
- 1:00:12you going
- 1:00:13to deliver
- 1:00:13it? I've
- 1:00:14been
- 1:00:14talking to
- 1:00:15a guy
- 1:00:16recently
- 1:00:16that's
- 1:00:17trying to
- 1:00:18put his
- 1:00:18own
- 1:00:19strategy
- 1:00:20together,
- 1:00:20and we've
- 1:00:21been
- 1:00:21talking
- 1:00:21about a
- 1:00:22strategy
- 1:00:22document
- 1:00:23that he
- 1:00:23wants to
- 1:00:24take to
- 1:00:25his exec
- 1:00:26and the
- 1:00:26board, and
- 1:00:29the
- 1:00:29strategy
- 1:00:30is taking
- 1:00:32some new
- 1:00:32products
- 1:00:33into a
- 1:00:33different
- 1:00:33market,
- 1:00:35and that's
- 1:00:35kind of
- 1:00:36the
- 1:00:36headline,
- 1:00:36but then
- 1:00:37it's okay,
- 1:00:38so how are
- 1:00:38you going
- 1:00:38to do
- 1:00:39that? Who
- 1:00:40you're
- 1:00:40going to
- 1:00:40do that
- 1:00:40with, who
- 1:00:42you're
- 1:00:42going to
- 1:00:43go after.
- 1:00:44What are
- 1:00:44the
- 1:00:44systems in
- 1:00:45place? Who
- 1:00:45are the
- 1:00:45people?
- 1:00:46What's the
- 1:00:46messaging?
- 1:00:47And so you
- 1:00:47gradually
- 1:00:48start
- 1:00:48filling,
- 1:00:49filling
- 1:00:49that out.
- 1:00:50And I
- 1:00:51think your
- 1:00:51style then
- 1:00:52comes from
- 1:00:53the fact
- 1:00:53that you
- 1:00:54understand
- 1:00:55what you
- 1:00:56can do
- 1:00:57well, in
- 1:00:57that where
- 1:00:58you need
- 1:00:58your own
- 1:00:59you own
- 1:01:00help, what
- 1:01:01might be
- 1:01:02the key
- 1:01:03determining
- 1:01:04factors to
- 1:01:04get that
- 1:01:05going? And
- 1:01:05then I
- 1:01:06think that
- 1:01:07actually
- 1:01:07then
- 1:01:07determines
- 1:01:08your own
- 1:01:09style that
- 1:01:09you'll go
- 1:01:10after. So
- 1:01:11I think if
- 1:01:12you look
- 1:01:12at it from
- 1:01:13a how
- 1:01:14you're
- 1:01:15going to
- 1:01:15deliver
- 1:01:16what the
- 1:01:18job
- 1:01:18requires,
- 1:01:19that will
- 1:01:19actually
- 1:01:20determine
- 1:01:20your
- 1:01:20strategy,
- 1:01:21when you
- 1:01:21understand
- 1:01:22how you're
- 1:01:22going to
- 1:01:22how you're
- 1:01:23going
- 1:01:23Mark Ackers: to
- 1:01:23deliver
- 1:01:24it. Alan,
- 1:01:24thank you
- 1:01:25so much
- 1:01:25for coming
- 1:01:25on. I've
- 1:01:26really
- 1:01:26enjoyed
- 1:01:27like just
- 1:01:27focusing
- 1:01:28on one
- 1:01:29subject,
- 1:01:29which is
- 1:01:30aspiring
- 1:01:31sales
- 1:01:31leaders,
- 1:01:32first time
- 1:01:32sales
- 1:01:33leaders,
- 1:01:33and on
- 1:01:34what that
- 1:01:34world
- 1:01:34looks
- 1:01:34like. I
- 1:01:35know, as I
- 1:01:36say, I
- 1:01:36know it's
- 1:01:37my words,
- 1:01:37but it's
- 1:01:38true. Just
- 1:01:38such a
- 1:01:38rich
- 1:01:39history
- 1:01:39and level
- 1:01:39of
- 1:01:40experience
- 1:01:40there. I
- 1:01:40think
- 1:01:41anyone
- 1:01:42listening
- 1:01:42to this is
- 1:01:42going to
- 1:01:43take a lot
- 1:01:43from this
- 1:01:44episode.
- 1:01:45How can
- 1:01:45people
- 1:01:46find more
- 1:01:47about you
- 1:01:48and follow
- 1:01:48you? Where
- 1:01:49can they
- 1:01:49find you?
- 1:01:50Unknown: Yeah,
- 1:01:51well, I
- 1:01:51should
- 1:01:52take some
- 1:01:52of my
- 1:01:52advice
- 1:01:53really
- 1:01:53about the
- 1:01:54website
- 1:01:55still not
- 1:01:55up for me.
- 1:01:57I kind of
- 1:01:58work under
- 1:01:58the radar
- 1:01:59a bit. But
- 1:02:01yeah, I'm
- 1:02:01on, I'm on
- 1:02:02LinkedIn.
- 1:02:02That's
- 1:02:02probably
- 1:02:03the
- 1:02:03easiest
- 1:02:03way to
- 1:02:04find me.
- 1:02:04There's,
- 1:02:06there's
- 1:02:07just my
- 1:02:07own
- 1:02:07profile,
- 1:02:08which is
- 1:02:08Alan
- 1:02:08Clark, and
- 1:02:09then
- 1:02:09there's an
- 1:02:09Allen
- 1:02:10Clark
- 1:02:10consulting
- 1:02:11profile.
- 1:02:12So yeah,
- 1:02:12you can
- 1:02:12just, you
- 1:02:13can find
- 1:02:13me on the
- 1:02:14on the
- 1:02:14LinkedIn
- 1:02:15or through
- 1:02:15you guys,
- 1:02:16because I
- 1:02:16do a lot
- 1:02:16of work
- 1:02:17with you
- 1:02:17guys now.
- 1:02:18So I
- 1:02:18Mark Ackers: was
- 1:02:18gonna say,
- 1:02:19If anyone
- 1:02:19wants to
- 1:02:20have some
- 1:02:20actual
- 1:02:21coaching
- 1:02:21from you.
- 1:02:21We can,
- 1:02:22can match
- 1:02:23them up
- 1:02:23and they
- 1:02:23can get
- 1:02:24coaching
- 1:02:24for you
- 1:02:25from my
- 1:02:25sales
- 1:02:26coach.
- 1:02:26Absolutely,
- 1:02:27absolutely
- 1:02:27Alan,
- 1:02:28thanks for
- 1:02:28coming in
- 1:02:29and great
- 1:02:29to have
- 1:02:29you in
- 1:02:30Newcastle.
- 1:02:30Thank you
- 1:02:30very much.
- 1:02:31Thank you.
- 1:02:31You.
